Mirio’s arms ached, burned with the movement of every step he took, even as he leaned heavily against the walls, his other hand clutched tightly around Eri’s, just short of actually crushing her hand that was dwarfed by his. But he couldn’t stop, couldn’t allow himself to stop moving - there were more members of the Eight Precepts out there, more people who would come and take Eri from him even after Overhaul’s capture, even after his defeat, so he has to keep moving. They were getting closer to safety with every step, of that Mirio was sure, but he needed to get Eri to a Pro hero, and then he needed to go back and get Sir Nighteye - needed to find someone to heal him, SAVE HIM.

Eri’s soft words faltered him only slightly as he turned to look at her, his heart overwhelmed and BREAKING with every moment but he SMILED at her so brightly, scooping her up into his arms despite the screaming his limbs did - maybe he could move faster this way? He glanced away for just a moment, eyes locking with the door, with the light that trailed in from the outside before looking back at Eri - his smile never faltering for a moment.

“It’s what HEROES do, Eri-chan!” He spoke as brightly as he good despite his straining, despite the undercurrent of guilt that was streaming through his veins. Saving people is what heroes do - he just wished he had saved her SOONER.

“YES, we WILL -” Deku was right, of course he was. Mirio hadn’t forgotten, but he had fallen into a pit of his own guilt and disappointment long enough to be swallowed by it. But he couldn’t stay there for long, not with Eri still out there, stuck, terrified, under Overhaul’s thumb. They will save her - THEY MUST. It wasn’t an attempt anymore, it wasn’t a ‘give it your all!’, they HAD to succeed. Mirio would do whatever it took to make up for the decision he made in the alleyway that day - while at the time, he thought it was the best course of action, which was only reaffirmed by Sir’s praise later on - Mirio felt STICKY with guilt. He hated the fear in her eyes when he threatened her - told this little girl that consequences happen when you misbehave. And the very fact that she KNEW and was AWARE of such consequences and was SCARED for THEIR safety – made Mirio’s skin crawl. 

THEY should be the heroes saving HER – not the other way around.

“We’ll do whatever it takes, Deku. Me and you!”

“Oh, com’n Tamaki!!!” Mirio clapped a hand on the other’s shoulder, pulling him in close, smiling widely at him, “The dorms JUST went up! I’m sure they’re amazing!” Honestly, Mirio had no idea how UA got them up as fast as they did, but MAN, they looked amazing for being done in just under a month! It was UNFORTUNATE that they couldn’t be in the same dorm building, but the dorms were separated by classes, so. It was what it was, he supposed.

“Let’s go see your room before you say that!! I’m sure we can make it look JUST LIKE your room back at home!!” He’d help him as much as the other needed for him to feel COMFORTABLE in his dorm.

The question, in of itself, was ODD to say the very least. In front of him, palms outstretched and sizzling, smoke billowing from the center of his hand, was one of the problematic first year kids he heard about the first day of the semester. But he doesn’t REMEMBER this one from his little scuffle with 1-A. Maybe he was still in trouble! Who knows! But it’s in the past, and what was before him, was a sight to behold, surely!!

“You’ve really got a handle on that quirk of yours!!!” Mirio beamed, projecting his voice loudly as strong hands settled on his hips, “While I’m not sure WHY you’re showing it to ME, exactly!! I will say that you will go REALLY FAR in terms of being a hero!! HOWEVER, you seem a bit AGGRESSIVE!” Smile never wavering, he bent at the hips so he was eye level with the other, “I’d tone down that anger a bit so that the kids can look up to you, ‘kay!! That’s another part of being a good hero!!! Go Plus Ultra!!!!”

people think /his/ child is strong, but catch sir bench pressing said child that probably weighs five times a certain successor. 'i can lift and toss you easily so don't try any shit.'

“RIGHTY-O, SIR! I’M READY!!” Tense and ready to be a PROJECTILE for whatever his Mentor DEEMS WORTHY!!

---- A PAUSE as he stops in thought, trying to relive the past FEW SECONDS in his mind -- DID HE? It’s entirely possible. Despite talking to his own father every morning as part of his Morning Routine, Mirio had known Sir Nighteye for some time now, it could have just been a slip of the tongue? Though he’s almost CERTAIN it didn’t feel that way.

“I SUPPOSE I MUST’VE!!!” In any case, Sir didn’t SEEM like he was upset by the prospect! “Though you sort of are, right? But like a MENTOR or.... No, like my HERO DAD?”

A laugh billowed from Mirio as his hands were suddenly thrown to his hips, “WRONG?” He repeats the word before he laughed once more, his posture almost reminiscent of ALL MIGHT from victories long past, grand smiles of a time before this. 

“Not a thing! I’m PUMPED UP!! I just got done meeting Class 1-A!! It’s hard not to be AMPED UP meeting those guys!! They really take PLUS ULTRA to a whole new LEVEL!!!!!”

“Let me DOWN?” Mirio tilted his head a moment, pondering over the other’s words, while he understood Tamaki must be saying that for some REASON, some terrible thought process that he sometimes dwindles through -- EVERYONE does at one point or another. But he just didn’t totally understand it for THIS MOMENT.

“You’ve NEVER let me down, Tamaki.” A smile so bright that it rivaled the SUN, or hell, even Tamaki’s OWN smile, pulled at Mirio’s lips as it often did. “No matter what you’re there for me, and I’m here for you! Don’t worry about it too much, okay? You GOT this!”

“But the public’s opinion has a lot of weight in my ranking as a HERO, does it not, All Might?” A soft, knowing smile weighed on Mirio’s lips, he’d had this discussion quite a few times with All Might’s sidekick over the series of the past year. It was no secret that Mirio and his quirk hadn’t been in the BEST shape when he first arrived at Nighteye’s agency, but he’d worked HARD to get where he was -- THOUGH NO ONE HAS A CRITIC WORSE THAN THEMSELVES.

“But I suppose you’re correct!” A smile as bright and wide as All Might’s himself pulled at Mirio’s features as they, so often, did. “What matters most is my opinion of myself! If I can’t be happy with the things I’ve accomplished, then how can anyone else, right?”

Chin pressed to the floor, arms holding himself up, Mirio grinned up at Nighteye, “SIR!!” He almost wheezed, trying hard to keep his focus on the training at hand, “I’m trying to practice phasing difference parts of my body while keeping the other parts solid!!” He’d imagine that if he could sweat, he would be dripping by now.
