you would think after being at camp for so long, and even fighting in the battle of manhattan, that percy had gotten really good at sword fighting and knew how to avoid the simple mistakes that people often made when they were first starting out. but he had somehow slashed at his own arm pretty good while practicing with clarrise, so now he was in the infirmary with annabeth bandaging him up. "sorry, i don't know how that happened," percy said, watching annabeth be careful with his arm. "must have not gotten enough sleep or something." a few years ago he would've blamed clarrise, but now he knew better than to assume what someone would be like based off of who their godly parent was.

percy looked at annabeth closely. he knew that body language wasn't the most reliable source out there, but was he crazy or did annabeth look like she was about to cry for a second there? hearing her tell him that they couldn't be friends felt like a stab in the gut. "yeah, at first. you explained our parents never got along but then we went on all those quests together and-" and kissed he wants to say, but he doesn't mention it. that's the last thing he should bring up right now. "is this really it for you?" he asked. "i'm sure i could convince thalia to talk to you." it was weird seeing two very different views on luke and what he did. thalia was angry, probably rightfully so since trying to get into camp had turned her into a tree. but annabeth had always liked luke, offering logical reasoning whenever percy could only see red. did annabeth know what luke had done after percy's first quest? someone sending a scorpion after you isn't easy to forget.

𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗲𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗷𝗮𝘄𝘀 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱, 𝘀𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱𝗻’𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗲𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 ; there was so much she wanted to tell him but so little time for it. She has been fighting against time for years now, trying to talk Luke out of this war, trying to show him that there were other ways to reach his goal — trying to make him stay away from Kronos’ and not become his vessel. And yet, things have gone this far, way too far and she couldn’t stop it. The worst part is that Annabeth cannot say a goddamn word to Percy. Soon Kronos’ would find out what she has done to their army ( an act of treason the titan king would not just let it go ). We won’t win, i made sure of it ! She wants to scream and cry and say that she is sorry but Annabeth cannot do that. What’s the point if Percy just said he will never be able to forgive her ? Annabeth felt tears forming in her eyes and forced herself to blink to make them go away. I cannot show any weakness now. She really tried to put on an evil smile but the whole facade is starting to swallow her whole. “ Always so innocent and so full of yourself. ” Please Percy, go away. “ I always told you that we couldn’t be friends, Perseus. ”

There was an awkward laugh as Will brought up the film, it really was too relatable for comfort.

"Well, just remember... the glowing one wasn't the bad guy." And with that, the demi-god closed his eyes and sang a soft hymn to his father, Apollo. His hands started to let off a soft, warm glow, which then spread through his body... something like when one cracks a glow stick and shakes it around a bit.

the betrayal from luke still stung, so percy was hoping that his second year of camp would be a little easier. he knew that monsters would still find him when he was at home, but he felt more prepared this time and he wouldn't have to worry about getting attacked at camp. still, the exploding dodge balls seemed to push him over the edge. was this going to be the rest of his life? he didn't know if he could do this. yeah, he had annabeth and grover and chiron, but he knew that being a child of the big three set him apart from everyone else in camp. thank goodness annabeth was there to help with the monsters, he was sure he would be a lot worse off if she wasn't and he didn't have any ambrosia handy.

the thwack definitely got his attention, he still felt a bit dazed when annabeth started talking. obviously she was right, daughter of athena and all, but percy didn't want to listen. was it so wrong to hide in his room? the gods could figure this out on their own. he took everything in and let annabeth tug him away. "ugh, fine. gonna write her a letter once i'm in my cabin," he said. percy tried to focus on that and not the fact that him and annabeth had been really close just a second ago. he wouldn't dare tell her about the bully who asked if she was his girlfriend. "how long until we get to camp? i've been looking forward to being safe from monsters for a few months." he asked. at least, if no one messed with the border like luke did. percy didn't like this whole demigod thing.

as much as chiron would deny it, nothing could've prepared camp half-blood for what they just went through. even the six whole quests that percy was sent on were child's play compared to this. he was still wrapping his head around it. it felt like he was just right beside annabeth, knelt beside her with worry illustrated all over his face. now it was over and he didn't know what to do. clarisse caught his attention. mostly because she was crying and children of ares would tell you they never cry. everyone else would point out that's not necessarily the healthiest thing in the world, but it's what they said.

before he can really think, he's at her side with his hand on her face, wiping away a tear. he stays quiet. partly because he knows a lot must be going through her head just like his, partly because this is the first time he's seen her be so vulnerable, much less someone from the ares cabin. they've got their dad to thank for that. he's caught by surprise when she grabs his hand, something he wasn't expecting but today has been full of surprises.

percy nods, understanding that clarisse is referring to silena. their friendship had been another big surprise, along with silena being the mole who was working for luke. he had convinced her to join his side and tell him what was going on at camp. when she explained, percy felt like he understood. he didn't like the way luke went about it, but he had been right. how can someone bring a child into the world, much less a demigod, and not do anything? not give them a sign and claim them as their own and say i see you. he had gotten lucky, he knew that. he was the only member of cabin three aside from tyson.

"i understand. she'll always be a hero," he says. percy resists the urge to bring up luke, something he's still trying to wrap his head around. why does he get to go to elysium along with silena? but clarisse is talking to him now, which rarely happens, so he's going to listen.

Clarisse's arms are aching.

It's not the battle -- she's not weak, she'll never be weak. If she can bear every injury with honor and silence, she'll still be a true daughter of Ares. No, this is something far more raw and grating crawling up her spine and down her arms and circling her gut. It's desperate; if she just looked up she'd see who she was looking for and this nightmare would be over.

Except she knows she won't so she can't look at all.

( that's something you learn in the labyrinth: keep your head down, and don't believe anything that you can't feel. or beat the crap out of. )

She doesn't realize that she's no longer alone until she feels a hand on her face and instinctually stiffens, waiting for the pain. But it's just solid and steady, burning in a different way. Shame? Relief? Oh, who cares anymore -- she's tired. She can't admit it anywhere where her siblings or her father might hear; she can hardly admit it to herself. But Gods above, her bones hurt.

Clarisse recognizes Percy from a glimpse of his dark hair and the way he always inexplicably smells a little like the ocean. There's a part of her that rages, because there is always a part of her that will rage -- that is her family legacy, after all. It's not just that he's caught her in a moment of vulnerability -- it's that jealous, petulant, screaming voice in the back of her mind that always asks why him. Why is he special? Why is he chosen? Haven't I done enough yet?

But she's not a kid anymore. Maybe none of them are, after a battle like this. She doesn't notice her own tears or the burning in her throat, just grabs at Jackson's hand with more strength than she knew she had left.

Kronos is defeated. Luke is gone. Charles. Silena.

❝ She's a hero. ❞ Her voice is rough but firm and leaves no room for argument as she finally looks up at him.
