Chapter Nineteen – Army Training Grounds, 1302 hours
Tumblr media
WAC is an acronym for Woman’s Army Corps FYI
Word count: 1916 words
Warnings: Phillips is a jerk >:(
Tumblr media
Addie had no idea how busy the recruits were really before she got to Camp Lehigh where Erskine and Steve would be working together. Phillips was ticked, of course, but Erskine knew what he was doing. Addie soon learned that Phillips would have rather picked the largest and fastest man in the outfit before considering what he was made of. Idiot.
Before the first day of actual training, Addie was sent to the WAC’s side of the camp to stay with another lady. She didn’t mind, but it would be strange since she hadn’t lived with another female, let alone spoke to one in almost a year. Whatever. Besides, Lieutenant Carter was nice, strict and quite passionate. Plus she would take you anytime, anywhere. Scary wasn’t quite the word Addie would have used, but it was pretty darn close. “I hear you’ve already received the serum.” Agent Carter asked as she helped the other make out her bunk. “Long story short, yes.” Addie nodded, stuffing her pillow into the fabric pillowcase. “I really don’t know half the details.” “And you’ve never met Dr. Erskine before?” “Nope,” Addie shook her head. “At least, not that I remember. I was out of it for a long time.” “A whole year.” Carter informed. “The Colonel briefed me on your file before you arrived.” “Oh,” Addie wasn’t quite sure how to respond to that. Anything involving Phillips couldn’t have been very pleasant. “Don’t be worried, hon. I’m not one to gossip. The little buggers.” Addie snickered as she tugged her dress off to change into her uniform. It was similar to Agent Carter’s but a different color and cut. “And this whole place is ours?” She turned to the English agent with a grin. “There’s a revolver in the drawer to keep any prying eyes away,” Carter winked. “Only a six shot though.” “Aw!” Addie made a mock pout. “C’mon, then—“ The other opened the door and shooed her out. “Supper’s not going to eat itself.” “Thank goodness, I’m starved.” “Erskine tells me the serum boosts your metabolism to four times faster than the normal person.” “Great, now that I know the numbers, then I can use an excuse to get fifths.” They shared a laugh as they passed the buildings and bungalows of the camp, the mess hall just a few hundred yards away. “So how did you meet Rogers?” “Oh, lets see…” Addie scrunched her brows. It felt like centuries ago. “The library. I was with another soldier and we kinda bumped into each other. No, it was Bucky first, then Steve.” “And who’s Bucky?” “Oh, Steve and mine’s best friend. He’s a hoot, to say the least.” “Hm, sounds contagious.” “Well, flattery gains you nothing, Lieutenant.” Addie tried to pull some of her wit from her fragmented memory, and to her delight, the words seemed to flow right and she actually made her other laugh. “Oh, please, call me Peggy.” She smiled sweetly as they entered the mess hall. “Besides, they’re going to bump you up to Commander from what the Colonel tells me.” “Oh—really?” Addie gave her new friend a strange look, genuinely surprised. “But…I don’t think commissions work that way.” “Not with the government behind it and a research unit, they do whatever the hell they feel like.” Peggy nearly deadpanned as she handed the super-soldier a tray. Addie shrugged and followed the Brit through the line. Erskine knew what he was doing. They’d be just fine…
The Next Morning, 1109 hours
Peggy and Addie walked to the training grounds where the lieutenant would greet her platoon and begin working with them. Turns out that platoon was selected for the Strategic Scientific Reserve, and it included one Steven Rogers. Looking almost like a boy among the much taller recruits, Addie couldn’t help but feel a little sorry for him since he would have to keep up with competition like this. “Recruits, attention!” Peggy ordered as she walked in front of them, Addie hanging back behind and next to the truck. “Gentlemen, I am Agent Carter. I supervise all operations for this division.” The recruits looked a little uncomfortable at a woman would be in command of them. “What's with the accent, Queen Victoria?” One recruit smarted off, his tone unyielding. “I thought I was signing up for the U.S. Army.” Addie scrutinized his face, remembering he might be a trouble maker. She didn’t like bullies, same as Steve. Peggy simply stepped closer to him, her expression still. “What's your name, soldier?” “Gilmore Hodge, Your Majesty.” The recruit grinned. “Step forward, Hodge. Put your right foot forward.” Hodge obeyed with a face, his brow raised. “We gonna wrassle? 'Cause I got a few moves I know you'll like.” Peggy landed a punch right on his jaw, laying him sprawling on the dirt. “Agent Carter!” Phillips called from the jeep where he climbed out next to Addie. “Colonel Phillips.” The lieutenant spun around and faced her superior. “I can see that you are breaking in the candidates.” Phillips said as he approached Peggy. “That's good!” Then he turned the Hodge who hadn’t gotten off the ground. “Get your ass up out of that dirt and stand in that line at attention till somebody comes tells you what to do.” There was no argument in his tone. “Yes, sir!”
Colonel Phillips glanced at Addie as she came to stand next to Peggy, her eyes wandering to Steve as the Colonel spoke. “General Patton has said that wars are fought with weapons, but they are won by men. We are going to win this war because we have the best men.” He paced up and down the line, still unimpressed with Steve’s scrawny appearance. “And because they are going to get better. Much better.” He looked to Addie again, pointing to her. “This is what you’re going to go up against at the end of the week. She may look small but she has been enhanced in ways I doubt you could imagine.” Wait—Phillips said nothing of this…! “If you can beat her, you’ll be considered one of the best.” Addie felt her heart drop. This wasn’t supposed to happen! Was this a test for her?? Was it a plot by Phillips to get his man and kick Steve out?? But she kept her unmoving demeanor as Phillips continued. “The Strategic Scientific Reserve is an Allied effort made up of the best minds in the free world. Our goal is to create the best army in history. But every army starts with one man. At the end of this week, we will choose that man. He will be the first in a new breed of super-soldier. And they will personally escort Adolf Hitler to the gates of hell.” “With her too??” One of the recruits pointed at Addie, her blood was boiling. It was not Hodge, unfortunately… “Unless you want to conduct your own test right here and now??” Phillips offered, like Addie was his personal toy to flaunt. “I wouldn’t mind.” The recruit dared. Addie rolled her eyes as Phillips motioned for her to step forward. She didn’t want to fight the guy, but he did deserve a kick in the pants. “If you can keep her down, I’ll be impressed.” Phillips said before he let them begin to spar, stepping back. By now they were drawing the inquisitive looks of the other recruits and even some of the instructors. The girl freak was going to fight a man right there. “Now don’t go easy on me, sweetheart.” The recruit taunted, his hands reaching for her middle and lowering his center to knock her to the ground. She retaliated with a firm knee to the shoulder knocking him off his balance. They both hit the dirt, Addie on top as her hand came down and clutched his neck, pressing those arteries before she felt smaller hands try to yank her off the recruit. “Adds, don’t!” It was Steve, thankfully. She might have seriously hurt the other… “Rogers!” Phillips barked. “Get back in line before I put you in next!” “Yes’sir..” Steve looked at the Colonel before reluctantly stepping back into formation. Addie frowned but reached down and offered her hand to the very surprised recruit. He took it, but his expression was evident that they weren’t done here. “I think you’ve made your point, Colonel.” Addie turned to Phillips. “Oh, shes speaks.” Phillips sneered, barely even registering her comment. “Last time I checked, you volunteered for this project, girl.” “And that means I can leave any time I wish.” She shot back, struggling not to show the bite in her words. “I’m still your superior officer, Barnes.” This made her go quiet, not because he had made the winning goal, but what he had called her. True, she never gave a last name when she first showed up in 1939, but hearing Bucky’s last name used to address her was…frightening as well as euphoric, all at the same time. “Carry on, Lieutenant.” Phillips said with little hinderance as he stalked back to his jeep as Addison stood watching him. So far she had made two enemies in less than an hour. Lovely.
Thursday Night, 1728 hours
Addie was impressed that Steve had kept up decently as the week seemed to get harder in their training. She’d tagged along with Peggy and even participated in some of the marches or runs they did in the afternoons. She wasn’t free to choose which ones she would do, but she did join the WAC’s drills on the other side of camp when she wasn’t with Erskine or Peggy. She’d been…welcomed to say the least by the other men. Catcalls and hollers were normal procedure when she passed the recruits on her way to Erskine’s building. Some of them even had the gall to ask her on a date. All declined. Only Steve was allowed to take her out. And then there was the incident. She and Steve were coming back from a pass and were just about to split to go to their separate parts of the camp, when two men jumped the smaller man, tackling him to the ground with three other larger ones holding Addie back before she could attack any of them. “Let him go!!” She shrieked, trying to kick the knees of her withholders. She made contact with someone, a yelp of shock and pain sounded. “Get her!” Someone barked, awful familiar, but Addie didn’t pay attention, she was too busy yanking off the man who was pining Steve to the dirt. Something in her mind called back to her time with HYDRA, being shoved to the dirt for punishment, the air rushing from her lungs as dust filled them. A cough refusing to come from lack of oxygen— “You animal!” She howled, barreling into the man and grasping his neck. “Addie, don’t-!” She barely heard Steve wail. “You’ll kill him!” She felt hands pry at her wrists, the hands of her victim. He couldn’t pull her vice-like grip away, she felt red cloud her vision. She wouldn’t let anyone hurt Steve…-- “Addison!!” Steve shouted, grasping her shoulders and calling her name to snap her out it. “Not your mission!” She felt the air snap back to the chilly New York air, not the freezing Siberian terrain, she was choking a man to death, someone was calling her name and another was calling for the sargent of the guard— She was in deep trouble…

Chapter Eighteen -Fair Enlistment Center, 7:27 pm
Tumblr media
I FINALLY POSTED IT YES
Word Count: 1268 words
Warnings: domestic fluff, more slow burn, kissing scene, semi-short chapter
Tumblr media
“There he is—“ Addie pointed across the crowd to Steve’s scrawny frame standing on the metal plate that lit up the face of the man on the plate, projecting it onto the picture on the wall.
“Hey, come on, you’re kinda missing the point of tonight.” Bucky tugged his friend off the plate. “I was gonna take you two to the best dance joint in town.”
“You two go on ahead, I’ll catch up later.” Steve waved them off, sounding a little distracted.
Bucky sighed and exchanged a look with Addie. “You’re really gonna do this again?”
“Maybe they’ll take me this time.” Steve tried. “Doctor Erskine may be almost finished!”
“As who, Steve from Ohio??” Bucky shot back, knowing full well of the smaller man’s attempts at different locations on his enlistment forms.
“They’ll catch you, or worse they’ll actually take you.”
“Please, lets wait, Steve.” Addie knew he should wait. It was just a little while longer…
“You wait, Adds.” Steve looked to her, his hands in his pockets. “I know you guys don’t think I can do this.”
“This isn’t a back alley, Steve. This is war!” Bucky struggled to hide his fear. It felt like so many things were slipping through his fingers, but he couldn’t let the other’s see that…
“I know it’s a war.” Steve nodded.
“Then why are you so keen to fight right now? Erskine is this close!”
“What do you want me to do? Collect scrap metal in my little red
wagon?”
“Yes!” Bucky raised his arms. “Why not?”
“I'm not gonna sit in a factory,Bucky.” Steve sighed. “Bucky, come on. There are men laying down their lives. I got no right to do any less than them. That's what you don't understand. This isn't about me.”
Bucky and Addie were silent for a moment.
“Right,” The former looked around. “’Cause you got nothing to prove.”
Addie sighed through her nose, he certainly was stubborn. “Are you sure you don’t want to go dancing? I won’t step on your toes.”
“No thanks, doll. You and Buck go have a good time. It’ll be while before you see him again.”
Addie smiled at him, giving him a quick peck on the cheek. “You’re sweet.”
Before they walked away, Steve piped up again. “Don’t win the war till I get there!”
Bucky smirked at him before giving a crisp salute. “C’mon, doll.”
“I just hope they don’t take him…” Addie felt Bucky’s arm snake around her shoulder. “Everything would go haywire.”
“Is this another one your helpful visions?”
“In not so dramatic words, I guess.” She shrugged, an unknown emotion spurring through her. She felt happy that she was going dancing with Bucky, she was sad that Steve didn’t want to come, but she was also hopeful that he was moving in the direction he wanted. And it was without her help. That was progress.
“And if I didn’t tell you before, you are beautiful tonight.” Bucky smiled at he as they passed through the entryway for the dance floor, a slowtune humming from the band in the dim light.
“Believe me, you did.” She smiled back, glad for the dark to hide her blush. “Thank you both times.”
She felt his hand hold hers outward, his nose burrowing into her hair as he led her in the slow swaying of the music.
“You dance like a charm.” He rumbled.
She closed her eyes and rested her chin on his shoulder. “You’re great, too.”
“And you’ve never danced before?”
“Not like this…”
“Must be a natural.”
“Flattery is not your secret weapon, Bucky.” She teased, pulling back just enough to smirk at him.
“Hey, you’re still here, aren’t ya?”
She grinned, shook her head and smacked his shoulder. “You’re a hoot.”
Then he fricking winked.
“That was a lovely night,” She smiled as Bucky walked her back to the apartment. Steve hadn’t joined them, unfortunately. “Thank you, Bucky.”
“It’s the least I can do.” He practically swaggered down the sidewalk, her hand in his. “Besides, you’ll be all I think about in England.”
“Aw, you hopeless romantic.”
He smirked and swung her arm slightly, almost boyishly. “You know, I hope you and Steve have the best time together. I’m happy that you’ve made him happy.”
“He deserves nothing less. And neither do you, okay?”
Bucky said nothing, but smiled anyway.
They reached the stairway leading up to the apartment, an unspoken command told them to halt.
“Addie, I just want you to know, since we may not be seeing each other for a long time, I do love you very much. I would do anything to help you, just write me a letter and I’ll be more than happy to help.”
“Thanks Bucky…” She smiled. “But we will see each other again, I promise. It may not be how we want, but we’ll be just fine. And you remember to write, okay? If you don’t I will personally airmail myself and smack you.”
Bucky laughed, shaking his head. “Yes, I’ll write.”
There was a strange pause as he stared at her, his expression almost pitiful.
“We’ll be okay, Bucky. You go kill Nazis.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Steve and I will be right behind you, okay?”
“Yeah…” He reached back and scratched the back of his neck. “Can..can I have a kiss?”
“A what?” She laughed, immediately regretting the action at his hurt expression. “Oh, well, of course you can.”
He stood still, confusing her.
“What? You have that look on your face…”
“I’ve never kissed a super human before..can you show me how?”
Oh you pathetic thing—
“Well, first you put your hands at ten and two—“ She placed his hands on her collarbone. “Then you let me come in for a grand slam…”
He was visibly shaking when she wormed her hands on his shoulders, planting her toes on his shoes and raising herself to his lips.
“Now say ‘prune’.”
“Prune.” He obeyed, receiving a slow yet teasing kiss from her. His fingers spread out, taking in her soft cheek riddled with the scar, his fingertips gingerly tracing the mark as his other hand tunneled through her hair. She lifted a foot, balancing her quivering frame on one toe, her hands pulling his hat off and toying with his dark hair. She knew she should have been going easier, reserving this for Steve alone. But it was his last night, she’d never see this man again before he would become another person entirely. She took the opportunity. This kiss was urgent, it was needed. Who cares that they were in the sidewalk in the middle of the night, she would miss him terribly and she wanted to taste him just once. He seemed to mirror that emotion with the pitiful groan that escaped his throat, his hands wrapping around her waist and begging for more.
She wanted to give him more, she really did. But she knew it would have to wait. So she painfully pulled herself away, breathless.
He pouted again, but he quickly regained himself, allowing her to take a step back. “That was…well, you teach swell.”
She felt her cheeks were red and warm to the touch, her own breath coming in puffs of steam in front of her face in the chilly air.
“Thanks.” He touched her arm to walk her up the stairs. “I’ll definitely be thinking about you in England.”
Addie was silent the entire night even when Steve asked her how the night went, all she answered was: “It was nice.”
But that kiss stayed with her for a long time…

Note
I genuinely believe that women aernt "meant" to do anything than, the obvious, give birth. As a man can not physically give birth so yes it is a woman's job to give birth. It is, however not a woman's entire job, yes a woman can not want to have children and/or get married at all. I am AroAce and do not plan on doing either. Not just by sexuality, also general preferences, some people may not want the effect or life threatening process of giving birth, it is entirely their choice. When a man forces/tells a woman, she needs to give birth it is absolutely incorrect because first of all, it is her child and her body that is being used as a compartment/lab to grow the fetus.
According to me, it is a woman's job to give birth, since a man is unable to. It is her job to care for a child, if the man is unable to. It is her job to cook, if her anyone around her in unable. In a relationships perspective, if the man provides his share through typical stuff like, taking care of taxes, the car, bills and extra expenses, then it is a woman's job to cook, clean and care for a child. But if the man is contributing through taking care of the child, cooking and cleaning then it is a woman's job to take care of the taxes, the car, the bills and extra expenses.
Your opinions?
Okay, I'm glad that you're willing to hear my opinions, secondly, from what you have said so far, it sounds as if there is only two jobs: providers and caretaker, and that either the man or the woman have to do either job, they can't do both.
And I agree that the mother cannot be both those people, I've seen a single mother struggle to be there for her children and provide for their livelyhood at the same time. Its hard as heck, I know. Thats why there has to be both parents there and active in their children's lives.
I really don't understand what you are trying to get me to say or answer in this sense, because there was no question in the above ask. You have stated your opinions about parent/responsibility relationships. But I will try to answer as best I can.
Lets say the man is staying home and taking care of the children/child. Therefore, the wife has to go out and make ends meet. But a woman cannot work as long as a man and neither can she do a man's job in many senses. Women only work around 30 hours a week, and they get paid less than a man.
So if our hypothetical family relies only on the MOTHER to provide for them, they will not be able to prosper as well as if the roles were reversed.
Men work longer than women and get paid more when they work longer, meaning more income for the family, more opportunity to put away funds(emergency funds for instance) and since it is a man's desire to go out and work, he has the ethic to do so.
Logically, it makes better sense additionally financially for the man to work and provide and the woman the care for their children/child and also her husband. It also makes for a better relationship overall.
I hope this helped.

Chapter Twenty – Friday morning,  0800 hours
Tumblr media
HOLY COW, we made it to twenty chapters??!? Thank you for all your reads!
Warnings: angst, fighting, some fluff at the end
Word count: 1963 words
Tumblr media
“He won’t dismiss you,” Peggy comforted as she and Addie walked to Colonel Phillips’ office. “You’re too important to this project.”
“Gee, that makes me feel better.” Addie sighed, just about fed up with Phillips. “Aw, I’m sorry, Peggy—I know what you’re trying to say, butI’ve been someone’s lab rat for long enough.”
“Don’t worry about it,” Peggy touched Addie’s shoulder before they stepped into the building. “He’s a pain, agreed, but he does do things for a reason.”
“Thanks,” Addie shot her friend a smile before they separated and she firmly knocked on the Colonel’s door.
A corporal opened it for her, his arm band emblazed with M.P. on it.
“About time you got here,” Phillips grumbled as he stood up and stepped to the front of his desk. “Miss Barnes, this is Major Flemming. He’s to be your defense attorney.”
“Hi—What?!” She looked at the Colonel like he had an extra arm. “You’re court marshalling me??”
“You openly attacked military personnel on a military base. That’s more than enough grounds for one.”
“Because those sorry excuses for soldiers attacked Private Rogers! I was defending him !”
“You also broke one man’s knee, putting him out of service and nearly crushed another one’s windpipe. But you’ll have your chance to defend yourself at the hearing.”
“Which is when?” She crossed her arms, glowering at the older man.
“Monday.” Flemmings informed. “Until then you’re to be detained at the brig.”
A surge of temper and hate rushed over Addison as she felt her arms tense as they fell to her sides. For a split second she thought she saw both men take half a step backwards.
“You can’t hold me, I’m not military personnel.” She growled.
“You’re under the army’s jurisdiction—“
“To hell with the army!” She snapped. “I want to speak with Dr. Erskine. Now.”
“He’s occupied with Private Rogers.”
“He’ll make time.”
“Don’t just stand there like a boob, get going!” Phillips told Flemmingwho jumped to his feet and bolted out the door. Ghost was about to follow him but Phillips barked her name.
“Barnes, you stay right here.”
Ghost glared knives at him, ready to kick his lights out. She made a show of sitting down like a good girl and continued to stare as he attempted to return to his paper work.
“You’re scared of me.” She concluded, her fingers curling.
“No, I’m not.”
“Then you’re in denial. If it was anyone else, let alone Steve, you would sent them away like that.” She snapped her fingers once. “But not me. I’m your dangerous pet, the one who needs a leash and a personal guard.”
“That last one was uncalled for—‘
“Don’t try to make excuses for that sorry sack of soldier that’s been following me the entire time I’ve been here!” She stood up, her temper unable to be held down any longer. “He’s clearly so green you made him a shadow!”
“You sit yourself down right now!”
“No!! You are not my superior nor my handler! We don’t know each other and I have had enough with your rules and army! I can walk away just fine and you’re going to have to explain to the doctor why your test subject walked away. I’m calling the shots now, Colonel. So unless you want this project to span another ten years, I hope you start listening.”
The colonel was very taken aback, but he was also cornered. If he had to explain to Erskine that Addie left because he was controlling her, theresno telling if the doctor would walk away and leave Steve scrawny and the army one less super-soldier.
“You’re a helluva woman.” Phillips grumbled before slouching back into his chair. “Name your terms.”
Addie suppressed her smile of victory and shoved her hands into her pockets. “Alright, I want to be assigned to Roger’s squadron when the project is complete, I also want Hodge to be assigned.”
“You seem pretty sure that Rogers is the one. But whats got you interested in Hodge??”
“Humor me, colonel.”
“Is that all you want then?”
“No, one more thing.”
“Spit it out.”
“You call off the court marshall for me, and I can help prosecute those men who attacked Private Rogers.”
“How do I know you’re not covering for Rogers?”
“Would I lie to you?”
Phillips pressed a pencil to the deck, the eraser squished down as he pressed harder.
“Alright, all terms accepted and to be carried out immediately. Happy now?”
“Indubitably.”
Outside
“Miss Barnes?” Doctor Erskine approached Addie, who was sporting a triumphant expression. “I was told you wanted to speak to me?”
“I did, but now I’m not so sure—actually yes, I do.”
“Then do please, lets walk and tell me what’s new.” He smiled motioned to the path from where he came.
“Thank you, sir.” She smiled back and slowed her pace for him to keep up. “I was wondering if Colonel Phillips has been trying to get you to pick someone else besides Steve?”
“He is bound and determined to use Private Hodge,” He shook his head, his softer voice in stark contrast to Phillips’ barking. “But as I have told him time and again, Hodge is a bully. He forces others to comply to his terms, its saddening really.”
“So you’ve always had your eye on Steve?”
“I have, yes.”
“I like you, Doctor.” She smiled at him.
“Oh, I’m flattered, Miss Barnes.”
“I had another question. Did Phillips also tell you about last night?”
“Tell is not strong enough a word.”
Addie smirked at the reply. Sounded about right.
“It appears you have made yourself quite the foe for these recruits.”
“Its not my fault they’re dumb enough to pick a fight.”
Erskine snickered, but quickly sobered. “What happened, actually?”
“Sir?”
“I mean, what happened in your own words. The recruits who were wounded claimed you attacked them first.”
“Of course they did…” Addie rolled her eyes before taking a breath. “Well, Steve and I had a pass. We were on time, no rules were broken, but as we were about to say goodnight and head to our barracks, three men attacked Steve. I assumed they were trying to get rid of him to take his place in the project.”
“You would assume correct.” Erskine nodded. “They were all top picks in Colonel Phillips view.”
“Well, I fight for Steve, and chase one off, break one man’s knee and nearly kill the last one…”
“You did the right thing, young lady. If you didn’t, I don’t think Steven would have been safe.”
“Is Steve okay?”
“A little bruised, but nothing he can’t shake off.”
“Oh, thank goodness..” She still couldn’t stop thinking about how his small hands grasped hers to try and stop her from killing that man. She almost did…
“Are you alright?” Erskine opened the door to his laboratory for her, noticing her expression.
“Yeah, I’m okay, just a little confused.”
“About what?”
“Well-… no, it doesn’t make any sense.” She frowned as she let herself slid into a chair, ignoring the familiar stench of antiseptic and the regular ‘lab’ scents she grew to hate.
“Go on, I might believe you.”
“Well, I have no utter clue how it works, but… I think I’m from the future.” She looked up to his face, surprised to see he was interested, not annoyed.
“What’s your theory on it?”
“I’m not 100% sure if I’m just crazy, it really doesn’t matter because technically I don’t exist.”
“I’m afraid I don’t follow.”
“I don’t have a driver’s license, no social security number, or birth certificate, not until 2005.”
“And what year was it when you ‘left’?”
“2024.”
“My goodness.”
“I know.”
“And how long have you been in this century?”
“That’s just the problem.” She stood up, pacing. Not quite nervous, just mentally fidgeting. “I think someone is jumping me back and forth from the future and this timeline. That’s how I got your serum, which hasn’t even been made yet. I was in the future, they shoved it in me and then I came back. Yes, yes, I know, it sounds like I need a mental asylum, but here I am with a serum.”
“No, I believe you,” The doctor nodded, not at all sounding like he was lying. “I am simply astounded.”
“You and me both.”
“And what about your friends, Steven and James?”
“They believe me, they’re nice.”
“I see…” Erskine rubbed his bearded chin for a moment before speaking. “May I ask what the trip is like and how it starts? I mean, time traveling.”
“The first one-“ She tried to pull the far away memories from her mind, the very fuzzy parts barley registering. “I was in a bus, I ducked down to look for something…ugh, and…I looked up, next thing I knew I was in New York City, 1939.”
“And the others?” The doctor was now writing things down. “The same?”
“In a sense. I went to sleep, I woke up in HYDRA—Oh, I don’t think I should—“
“Did you say HYDRA?” Erskine looked up from his paper, his eyes intense.
“Yes’sir. They’re the ones who gave me the serum.”
“In that jump, was there anything that might have given any clue to know what year it was?”
Addie was stuck, there was a lab, there was a man she hated…
“Y-yes…But I don’t know the exact year…”
“Then perhaps a guess?”
“Somewhere between 2000 and 2016.”
Erskine sighed. “Its alright, Addie, I’m not angry. Just disappointed.”
She guessed he had noticed her tense. It was instinct.
Then her stomach growled rather loudly. She frowned but felt her lips twist into a small smile when Erskine snickered.
“May I buy you lunch?”
That evening…
“You look exceedingly happy for someone who was threatened with a courtmarshall.” Peggy smiled as she sat next to Addie in the WAC mess hall. She’d been called away for drills that afternoon and it was just now they could catch up.
“Phillips doesn’t scare me.” She put a spoonful of mashed potatoes in her mouth and shook her head. “I did most of the talking anyway.”
“Ooh, tell me all about it!”
“No, wait- how did you know about the courtmarshall?”
“Word got around pretty quick. Now, c’mon, did he swear the wallpaper of the wall?”
“Actually, I might have backed him into a wall and blackmailed him.”
“You daft bugger!” Peggy smiled, elated. “Oh thank the Lord you did, it’s about time someone did.”
“He deserved it. But what about you? What did you guys do all day?”
“Oh, drills. Hodge is a pain. You’d be pleased to learn that your friend is a good man.”
“I knew that already.” She smiled at her British friend. “But tell me.”
“Phillips was watching our drills this afternoon, and he tossed a dummy grenade into the bunch. They all hit the deck, all except Steve. He threw himself on top of that grenade and shouted at everyone to get back. He was a little surprised when it never went off.”
Addie wondered if she was feeling admiration, jealousy and fear all at the same time. Peggy was talking about Steve almost like Addie would.
Yet, there was little jealousy in her thoughts as she was impressed with Steve’s act.
“Funny how he would sacrifice himself for men who don’t even like him that much.” The lieutenant smiled.
“Oh, he’s much worse when we were in Brooklyn.”
“Imagine that.”
“No, seriously. Bucky and I would have to bail him out of jail sometimes when he’d get into fights. It was funny sometimes, actually.”
“I can’t see that, but I’ll take your word for it.”
Addie snickered and shook her head before going back for seconds

Just- when you first see them "GET AWAY FROM ME HEATHEN!" and by now I'm just: Oh hi, the chocolates in the freezer and the blankets are over there it's about bloody time you got here too
