Dread by the Decade: L'Inferno
👻 You can support me on Ko-fi ❤️
Tumblr media
★★★★
Plot: Dante is guided by the poet, Virgil, through Hell.
Review: The first feature length film in Italian history, this is a faithful adaptation rife with stunning technical feats and surrealism.
Tumblr media
English Title: The Inferno Source Material: Inferno by Dante Alighieri Year: 1911 Genre: Occult, Dark Fantasy Country: Italy Language: Silent Runtime: 1 hour 11 minutes
Tumblr media
Directors: Francesco Bertolini, Adolfo Padovan, Giuseppe De Liguoro Writer: Dante Alighieri Cinematographer: Emilio Roncarolo Composer: Raffaele Caravaglios; Tangerine Dream Cast: Salvatore Papa, Arturo Pirovano, Giuseppe de Liguoro, Augusto Milla, Attilio Motta, Emilise Beretta
Tumblr media
-----
Story: 4/5 - Great adaptation that sometimes suffers from meandering.
Performances: 3/5 - Papa and Pirovano do little beyond mime speech, but the damned are wonderfully dramatic.
Cinematography: 4/5 - Just stunning.
Tumblr media
Music: 4/5 - Tangerine Dream’s official re-score is haunting, if a little repetitive.
Effects: 5/5 - Amazing! Forced perspective, puppets, wire work, and more create nightmarish replicas of Antonio Manetti’s illustrations.
Sets: 5/5 - Beautiful mix of real locations, matte paintings, and sets.
Costumes and Make-Up: 3.5/5

Trigger Warnings:
Violence and mild gore
Offensive depiction of the Prophet Muhammad
Suicide
Torture
Extreme Catholic ideology (ex: suicide and sex are sinful)

The Shining by Stephen King
Tumblr media
The Shining could be called a figurehead for both the horror genre of literature as well as of all the books written by the author. My expectations were mounted high but weren't lived up to. Not to say the book is bad, but it is not as excellent as some of the reader audience makes it out to be either.
"Monsters are real. Ghosts are too. They live inside of us, and sometimes, they win."
The book is about Danny, a nine-year-old boy who has special psychotic powers with which he can glance into things other people cannot. This power multiplies and becomes more active when he has to move into the Overlook Hotel where his father has been appointed as the caretaker. The book shows the downward spiral of the family into insanity as the Hotel plays its spooky magic into each of them.
One thing I admire about this is that it is as much a psychological thriller as it is a horror novel. The scary and creepy aspects of the book were put together competently but the author, through his writing, projects a window into each of the character's minds, adding so much dimension to the book.
Sometimes, however, the book came across as listless and felt like it was written by a child. Horror is not my genre, which may affect the way I see the book, but if you want to get into this particular genre, I would. suggest this book as a starting point.
Rating:★★★(3/5)

It must be a strange experience, being a child of a great director, and following the very same genre. Do you go pretty much the same route, or try something vastly different? This would make a great double-bill, at an actual movie theatre, with the 50’s edition of ‘The Blob’–another film in which the cinema isn’t the safe, dark, womb-like place we take for granted it is. Gimly: It’s no _Night of the_ that’s for sure, but I enjoyed it in parts. Paricularly fond of the coke punks and the pimp. Dubbing’s a nightmare though. _Final rating:★★½ – Had a lot that appealed to me, didn’t quite work as a whole._ John Chard: Metropol Mayhem! Demons (Demoni) is directed by Lamberto Bava and Bava co-writes the screenplay with Dario Argento, Dardano Sacchetti and Franco Ferrini. It stars Urbano Barberini, Natasha Hovey, Karl Zinny, Paola Cozzo, Fiore Argento and Geretta Giancarlo. Music is by Claudio Simonetti and cinematography by Gianlorenzo Battaglia. A wonderfully nutty spiced Spaghetti Horror, plot has a group of people trapped in a Berlin movie theatre that suddenly comes under attack by ravenous demons. It could reasonably be argued that Bava’s movie has some cheeky narrative depth underneath the gloop and schlock, this is after all purposely set in a movie theatre and features a film that basically becomes real, sort of. But really it’s a pic that’s set up for like minded horror buffs to feast upon, to jump head first into its feverish horror comic book glee. The script is as poor as the dubbing is, with a roll call of cardboard cut out characters and loose end scenarios jettisoned in readiness for the next plasmatic explosive sequence. Yet the care free abandon of the gruesome killings on show, and the rapid pace of it all, ensures it’s a fun packed ride. Even t...

Dread by the Decade: Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari
👻 You can support me on Ko-fi ❤️
Tumblr media
★★★★½
Plot: When a carnival comes to town, its somnambulist begins predicting people's deaths.
Review: Tense, layered, and stylistically gorgeous, this movie's status as a cornerstone of horror cinema is more than deserved.
Tumblr media
English Title: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari Year: 1920 Genre: Psychological Horror Country: Germany Language: Silent Runtime: 1 hour 14 minutes
Tumblr media
Director: Robert Wiene Writers: Carl Mayer, Hans Janowitz Cinematographer: Willy Hameister Composer: Giuseppe Becce Cast: Werner Krauss, Conrad Veidt, Friedrich Fehér, Lil Dagover
Tumblr media
------
Story: 3/5 - While interesting and unpredictable, it grows somewhat muddled towards the end and falls into ableist tropes.
Performances: 4.5/5 - Krauss plays Dr. Caligari in the most delightfully maniacal way, and Veidt is unsettling as the clairvoyant Cesar.
Cinematography: 5/5 - Eerily beautiful, with unique framing and lighting. There isn't a single shot in this film that isn't striking.
Tumblr media
Music: 4/5 - Wonderfully weird.
Sets: 5/5 - From the cityscapes to the carnival, all of the sets are distorted and angular, giving every shot an unsettling, dream-like quality.
Costumes, Hair, & Make-Up: 4/5 - Very solid. Dr. Caligari's outfit and make-up are iconic.

Trigger Warnings:
Mild violence
Ableism against mentally ill people (uncritical)

My Lady Connor!
Sono tornata, la Fatina Lunare!
Tumblr media
I got a question for you: if you could give Connor recommendations of your all-time favorite books, which books would you recommend to Connor because they are dear to you?
Hugs!!!
Always,
La Fatina Lunare Giulietta 🌙✨
Hello Sis! Sweetest moon fairy of mine, welcome back! I'm unforgivingly late in answering this ask, I'm so sorry ç_ç as you may know this is not the best of times for me since the year started, so sorry again, but now here are my choices.
These are books I would recommend not only to my beloved muse, but to everyone I care for. I must admit I'm not a great reader ^ ^' which is a shame for someone who wants to write, but those few things I read, they make a home inside of me, so I highly value them.
Some are in Italian but one can easily find translated/adapted versions online or in bookstores.
Tumblr media
The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion, Beren and Luthien, etc... - J.R.R. Tolkien (ok, basically all of his novels, even though I think the dearest to me remains The Hobbit ★~(◡‿◡✿)
Storia di una Capinera - Giovanni Verga
Anne of Green Gables (Book I) - Lucy Maud Montgomery
Angels and Demons, Da Vinci Code - Dan Brown
All the poetries collection of Edgar Allan Poe
All the poetries collection of Emily Dickinson
I Canti - Giacomo Leopardi
Vita D'Un Uomo - Giuseppe Ungaretti
The Trojan Women - Euripides
Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte
I hope that was useful for some good suggestions *-*
Tight hugs <3
