maybe he's being childish, but the holiday season hasn't ever been greeting card worthy for the rhodes -- no matter how much money cornelius tried to throw at it -- so maybe he's desperate for a little bit of childish fun for both of them. he won't consider himself successful until he sees a smile out of catherine. crouched down behind his car, he shouts back. ❝ sounds like the response of someone that knows she's losing! ❞ a few seconds later he shoots up for long enough to send another snowball sailing toward the arm of her coat before disappearing behind the shield of his car again.

they say that doctors are the worst patients, but he thinks that they have that all wrong. the family members of doctors seemed to have the same stubborn air about them -- especially if they wound up in the medical field themselves. maybe they should expand the generalization to medical professionals in general. ❝ please let me do it for you. listen to your doctors and your surgeon brother and take a beat for yourself. you can't save the world, catherine. especially if you don't take care of yourself first. ❞ the last thing he wants is her breaking something else. something that would require a more serious surgery or maybe not heal correctly.

she falls silent at the request. it isn't a secret to her that she sometimes talks a mile a minute and isn't the best at reading boundaries that are set out in front of her when she thinks she knows best or her curiosity gets the better of her. despite what that may read like on the outside, marlowe really doesn't like upsetting people. she's seen enough selfish and downright terrible people in her life to not want to be anything like them. ❝ sorry -- i just thought i saw -- but it doesn't matter. ❞ as much as she wants to push the issue, she'll believe that it's a trick of the eyes or her imagination running a little wild in the face of the danger she was just in.

❝ thanks, anyway. most people would have kept on walking instead of even stopping to check on me. ❞ she needs to remember to pick up some pepper spray, at any rate. not rely on the kindness of others and defend herself. the last time someone else tried to defend her, he went to prison.

he's not sure when the last time a few simple words nearly made him panic. he knew something had to be wrong when catherine called him while he's at work. he'd stepped out of the ed to take a call, but now he's fumbling with his phone to put it on speaker while he texts maggie to let her know that he's got an emergency and to get someone called in to cover him. despite that he is worried about her he doesn't want to add to the stress of whatever had happened to make her bleed -- a lot apparently. ❝ bleeding from where? please tell me you called an ambulance before me. where are you at? ❞ wherever it was he's determined to make it there in five minutes tops and hopes he can pull a favor out of kevin atwater or jay halstead if he needs it.

connor could appreciate that most patients tried to gauge the extent of their injuries based on past experiences or simply how they felt. but, adrenaline often covered up pain more than most gave their body credit for and every body experienced injury completely differently. he strived for having a decent bedside manner and maintaining that delicate balance of letting patients make their own informed medical decisions. ❝ i'm thinking it's probably for the best that we let a few x-rays decide that. the techs will be around soon. do you remember hitting your head at all? ❞

better to always get the head ct instead of skip it, but he was still trying to figure out what happened before they were brought into the ed. ❝ if you took any hits to the gut, we should probably check for internal bleeding. liver lacerations are pretty common with trauma. ❞

❝ i'll buy us some hot chocolate and it can be like old times? ❞ back then, connor would do anything to get out of the house. he and cornelius didn't get along from the moment that their mother died and the house was full of memories he would rather forget about than relive. all being reminded of elizabeth rhodes did for him was make him wish there was some way she could have saved her or that there was any way he could get her back. now that he's back in chicago and reconnected with his sisters at the very least, connor is more determined than ever to not be a complete scrooge for most of the holidays.

well seems like the secret santa among the nursing students just took a turn. looking over from the small box shoved into the bottom of his locker, connor raises a brow in confusion that it did appear to be a piece of coal in marlese's hand. ❝ it's kind of got a rainbow look to it that's kind of cool. but i'm sure there's more to it than that. is there a note or something? ❞ he's seen people get screwed over at white elephant exchanges, but never secret santa. there's more of a sense of responsibility of doing a good job there. after all, it could be traced back by maggie's random assigment generator as to who the scrooge was. white elephant exchanges were a lot more anonymous and also not feasible in the emergency department.

he'd planned on it. until he'd heard about everything that had happened while he'd ran from his dad... that mackenzie and her little sister were starting at med in the emergency department. ❝ i actually was hoping to talk to you. if you'd let me, kenz. ❞ he's not sure how much of her negative feelings about what his dad had done to her and marlowe have now been applied to him. at any rate, he's hoping that she doesn't find it too uncomfortable that he was taking his time walking out of the hospital in hopes of catching up to her.

❝ are you trying to convince me of that or yourself? because i honestly can't tell. ❞ a chuckle as his eyes examined elyse's face. a lot of people in the medical field could be described as married to the job in some respect. the er was fast paced and the flow of patients was ever expanding with the success of they hybrid or. connor himself hated the idea of leaving the staff short mroe than maybe missing out on an interesting case these days, which meant he took every precaution possible to avoid getting sick himself.

❝ it was just a thought, with that mysterious summer sickness making it's rounds. you are looking a bit pale, though. i was planning on grabbing some food before the rush if you wanted me to grab you something from the food trucks. ❞ a parade for the night shift happened every couple of weeks to boost morale for the night shift workers. the heat wave was likely to bring a crowd as the minimally cooler night air started to settle in -- and while that didn't necessarily mean a busy night for trauma, he would be ready to be an extra set of hands wherever they were needed.

his colleagues made his decision to return to chicago feel like the right one, even if nothing else did. particularly, patrick made the short list for things he was thankful for since leaving saudi arabia. connor found himself fortunate to learn from some of the greatest minds in cardiothoracics right here at gaffney. his father's intervention when connor first came here made it hard to gain the trust of a lot of hospital staff, but he was hoping he was finally getting to the point that he would overcome the negative stigma stuck to him because of his father.

despite this being one of the worst days he's had to date, a small smile does form at his friend and mentor's words of support. ❝ even though i had to call you to bail me out again of being in over my head with that surgery earlier? ❞ not to mention cornelius certainly didn't mind if anyone got caught in the crossfire of whatever his latest crusade was.
