FOMA 41: In Search Of Theatrical Halls
Lemonot, a tandem that meets between architecture and performative arts to trigger and celebrate the spontaneous theatre of everyday life, is presenting five Forgotten Masterpieces that shaped their modus operandi.
The first cholets were sighted almost fifteen years ago by Freddy Mamani Silvestre. | Photo © Lemonot
Five architectures seem at first glance completely disconnected, they are located in five different cities, designed by different architects, with different programs in diverse historical times. Yet they’re all united by the presence of prominent public interiors with a strong emphasis on the use of unique spatial languages, that make them great examples to investigate how to stage alternative forms of theatricality beyond specific theatre architecture.
In his “Texts on Theatre” describes Jacques Copeau how architecture doesn’t simply contain the drama but produces it, by co-creating its meanings, conventions and aesthetics. Staging a performance, Copeau continues, “is about acting in architecture: it is a practice that demands we pay attention to distance, scale, style, person-to-volume ratio and the immaterial architectures of light, heat and sound. Furthermore, using performativity as a design tool outside the boundaries of fictional scenographies leads to real yet unconventional spatial experiences.”
Indeed, the uncanny linguistic features of these buildings, in terms of geometry, colors, materiality or the clash between architectural layout and designated purpose, affect the way people inhabit them, enabling a peculiar acting in space as the performing of collective rituals and daily routines.
The Solimene Factory was born from the friendship of Vincenzo Solimene, called “Il Vasaio” (the Pottery Maker) and Paolo Soleri, who in 1950 traveled to Italy with the purpose to learn the art of pottery. Solimene entrusted him with the first and only project carried out in Europe, allowing him to design the factory for the production of ceramics.

The building is as if carved into the rocks overlooking the sea, incorporating the objects it produces. From the outside a bright enamels mosaic in the form of a drapery, almost as a garment giving a hint of what is produced inside, constructed with sixteen thousand waste vases, glazed in copper green or in simple terra-cotta embedded into the facade.

If the outside is wavy and sinuous like the Amalfi domes, the inside is geometric and defines the space towards the center. This fifteen meters central skylight illuminates the objects that are produced every day by expert hands. The interior, flared upwards, follows the same archaic principle of the object that is produced: the growth of the vase on the lathe. The ramp going through the floors, defines the four stages of ceramic processing and allows us to better observe the thousands of coloured and painted dishes, cups and vases.
The pieces are fired at the top floors and slowly come down to be painted in the main atrium, as you descend into the building you see this chromatic and also geometric change - from the material to its final creation. The building accompanies you throughout the production of a single object - starting with the terracotta and gradually seeing its final shape and colours. The objects become part of this scenography, framed in every gaze. They’re simultaneously actors and props that drive the public - constraining you to squeeze and linger among them. It is an architecture that screams the craft made with hands, which is still in full fervor today.

The Scala Theatre in Bangkok was without doubt the grand old theater and the finest movie theater left in Southeast Asia. Named after the Teatro della Scala in Milan, it first opened in 1969, showing the American civil war movie “The Undefeated”. Unfortunately, it has been recently closed down, probably due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and changing consumer preferences.
Its wonder is certainly due to the central location in Bangkok, one of the most chaotic cities in the world. The most interesting part of the building is not the enclosed screening hall. Rather, it’s the covered yet open foyer, whose elegant and geometric interiors are constantly and directly contrasted by the noise of the mopeds, by the smell of street food grills and tropical plants that can be seen from the windows. Its relationship with the city is definitely theatrical.
The foyer consists of a huge domed ceiling, set up with bronzed art deco flowers. | Photo © Antoine Lassus
In the past these kinds of theaters were usually situated in city centers and markets, where they became community gathering points as they supported the theater and the community. In this line, the foyer of Scala theatre acts as a proper public space, as a shaded portico that offers shelter from the heat of Bangkok. This is reflected in its overwhelming but at the same time welcoming decorations - columns that drop from the ceiling, lights in the shape of geometric flowers, floors and walls covered with velvet fabric. Thai culture is eccentric, it is flamboyant and greets you by dominating your senses.
The architecturally significant cinema’s Art Deco stylings and interiors were designed by Jira Silpkanok, which with its velvet curtains, veteran ushers, and vast auditorium, evoked the golden age of film exhibition. Specifically, the foyer consists of a huge domed ceiling, set up with bronzed art deco flowers. You are conquered by the vaulted windows that frame Bangkok as a choreographed spectacle - by the different types of textures both on the base of the columns outlining the shadows. Two stairways converge at the top taking you to the second floor, while almost touching the long chandelier that illuminates the center. A visionary architecture, where as soon as you enter it seems to be in a ship, or a spaceship.
The Bellini Theater in Palermo was first called Teatro Travaglino, from the name of a Sicilian burlesque mask. A hidden truth is hidden in its name since the theater has had to change many faces throughout the centuries. Destroyed several times by earthquakes and wars and many times rebuilt and renamed, looking for a new identity. What we have today is an incomparable Architectural stratigraphy of historical facts.
The theatre was an open living room in between privately owned palaces where the public could go in for the first time. | Photo © Lemonot
The theater has been literally carved inside a noble dwelling, the gallery and the stage are built between private houses, in fact it is still possible to see the windows of the neighbors that overlooked the main stage. It was entertaining popular operas and due to this fact, the space was constructed around a small stage with few wooden benches. Initially the main gallery had only festive purposes, banquets were set up and dances were often opened; it is only later that great artists were presented and therefore had a primarily cultural purpose.

Over time Marquises of Santa Lucia sacrificed part of their palace to build in 1726 a classic Italian-style theater with 4 tiers of boxes and entirely in decorated wood, it was called the theater of St. Lucia. The need for a more refined theater for the Elitè was entrusted to the royal architect Nicolò Puglia who accommodated more than 500 spectators.
Due to the disastrous earthquake that struck Palermo in 1726, the theater remained closed for several years, reopened only in 1742, enlarged and restored again, incorporating some neighboring houses of the Marquis Bellaroto.
In 1943 during the second world war it was also requisitioned by the US military and used as a movie theater for soldiers. In 1964 the building was damaged by a fire and subsequently recovered thanks to the intervention of the Teatro Biondo Stabile in Palermo and thanks to the professionalism of its director Claudio Grasso who regained the license from the Palermo police headquarters and returned the theater to its original function in 1980 until 2014.
It was reopened as a permanent exhibition venue. | Photo © Lemonot
Since 2019 is hosting a mixed-media installation designed by Alfredo Jarr. This operation led to many controversies - since part of Palermo’s cultural community stated that a theatre should be open only for spectacles and actual plays. The theatre layout and the museographic stage set affect and update each other in a very interesting way: the usual relationship between the proscenium (the place for the spectacle) and the platea (the place for the audience) is inverted, since the public gathers to admire the exhibition from the first, while the artworks are hosted in the latter, emptied of chairs’ rows.
Furthermore, this peculiar theatrical framework, shifting the way we look at the artifacts, activates a spontaneous layer of performativity, otherwise left behind in most traditional museum environments.
The Cistern Chapel or the Sewage Cathedral is a former pumping station designed by chief engineer Sir Joseph Bazalgette and architect Charles Henry Driver. Its construction became necessary in response to the the Great Stink of 1858.
The meticulous designs and bright colors have made the Crossness Pumping Station a real Victorian-style gem. | Photo © Lemonot
Its construction became necessary when the Thames became particularly polluted enough to raise a putrid smell throughout the city. The situation was aggravated by the unusually hot climate that hit the English capital and made the stench even stronger and unpleasant. To solve the problem, the Bazalgette plan consisted in the construction of two sewers to be placed in the outermost areas of the city. One of these was the Crossness Pumping Station which, at the time, had the function of draining the putrid waters to the east by running clean water into the Thames.
The complex is covered with decorations surrounded by cast ironworks forming columns rising up from the ground floor. | Photo © Lemonot
An architecture is made of joints and unconscious paths following geometric shapes and colored corners. The light is drawn to the central octagonal arcade, which supports a frieze of regimented yet twisting leaves and tendrils and on each column flowers, leafs and fruits decorate the capitals. At the time, the highly crafts fancy curlicues of cast iron weren’t seen as an unnecessary expense - it was the first time for such functional purpose to build with opulent and organic decoration of this kind.
Indeed, there is a great sacral charge within the main octagonal space that encourages the people to gather between the columns, inviting you to look up but also to hide among the industrial spaces - that become almost domestic. All four engines were named after members of the royal family; Victoria, Albert Edward and Alexandra: for this reason the choice of colors, materials and different patterns follows a specific narrative, becoming a built embodiment of their personalities. The spatial elements are actually personified, transformed into architectural characters.
Sprawled over a high plateau above La Paz, El Alto is arguably Latin America’s largest indigenous city. At an altitude of 4800 m, colorful buildings arise and geometric facades are visible from the teleferico travelling above the altiplano. The first cholets, also called New Andean architectures, were sighted almost fifteen years ago by Freddy Mamani Silvestre. Since then, they proliferated: various architects have appropriated them in terms of style and copied them typologically.
Cholets became expressions of wealth and cultural pride after centuries of oppression and colonialism. | Photo © Lemonot
Cholet is a portmanteau of the high-class chalet - the pitched roofs of these mansions resemble the ones of Swiss cottages and the derogatory cholo, a racist slang for an indigenous person. Mamani ‘s buildings have a common language, two or three storey and a ballroom on the highest ceiling room filled with Andean symbols, casted columns and windows with different geometrical profiles cutting the whole space. Using the colors of textiles are tracing inspiration from traditional garments and folkloric masks. These ballrooms are identified not only through iconographies but also by the use they make of it - from dances to ceremonies, to domestic inhabitation, to basketball courts or swimming pools.
Cholets are always designed in close contact with the buyer, triggering a personal and almost process of embodiment of the owner with the building itself. The building is to produce income. On the roof is our own home. The spatial experience can be read in completely opposite way, during the day the light from outside is absorbed by the colors and it seems to be in a video game, a confetti space. As soon as darkness falls, the LED lights direct you into the ballroom and surround every architectural element.
Not only the architecture itself is ornamental but the eccentricity with which the Aymara use and change the program of the space. The one of cholets is a controversial phenomenon, that nonetheless portrays the political, social and economic contemporaneity in Bolivia. On an urban level the cholets have become a symbol, recognizable monuments - able to immediately recall Andean identity nationally and internationally. Ultimately, the architecture of Crucero del Sur speaks the same language of the ceremonies that take place inside it. In these exuberant interiors, matter and performance achieved an absolute reciprocity.

#FOMA 41: Sabrina Morreale and Lorenzo Perri
Sabrina Morreale and Lorenzo Perri are architects, educators and co-founders of Lemonot, a design and research platform based in London. Hungry observers and compulsive collectors of anthropic mirabilia, they’re interested in all those iconographic gestures that enable the mutual immanence among objects, bodies and rituals. Their academic research focuses on contemporary folklore as a trigger for unconventional spatial languages, between geometrical abstraction and material figurativism. They’re Programme Heads of the AA Visiting school El Alto and currently teach at the Architectural Association and the University of Applied Arts Vienna.

A Burning Rose
Chapter Two: A Companion of Drunkards
Juliette guided Fleur over to the mail outpost, her gaze slowly surveying the people at it. There was a group of men around one of the tables on the platform, playing a game of poker. There was a man unloading supplies onto the outpost, and a woman in line at the mail window. Juliette dismounted Fleur and led her to the hitching post.
“Hopefully this will be quick,” Juliette murmured in French.
She patted Fleur’s neck gently before walking to the window. As she got there, the woman in front of her left.
“Good morning, madam,” the clerk greeted.
“Morning,” Juliette returned. “Has the mail arrived?”
“Not yet,” he said. “Train should be here shortly if you’ll wait.”
Juliette considered this. She could easily just leave and come back the next day, but she was not sure how much longer she intended to stay in this area. She had hoped to leave tomorrow and head East. She had spent plenty of time around Strawberry and had yet to find anything to photograph.
“Thank you, monsieur,” Juliette said.
“’Course.”
She retreated from the window, looking back at Fleur as she considered her options. She needed to get supplies from Strawberry already, but it felt like a waste to go there just to come back.
“Ay, señorita,” a voice called.
Juliette frowned and looked over to see who had spoken. It was one of the men at the poker table, he had dark messy brown hair, tawny freckled skin, and a mischievous look in his brown eyes. He was wearing a wide brimmed hat that bathed his face in shadows.
“Join us for a round,” he said. “You sound like you have money.”
“Really?” Juliette asked, her tone flat and unamused.
“Sorry miss,” one of the men sitting beside him said. “He ain’t… he’s had too much to drink.”
Juliette surveyed the table for a moment. There were only three people sitting, the man that had called her over had most of the money. She had time to kill and if they were losing to a drunk man, then they could lose to her. She did not gamble often, only when she thought she could win. The table seemed easy, one man seemed drunk and he was still winning against the other two.
“It is alright, I have time to spare,” Juliette said.
“Well alright,” he said. “I’ll deal ya in then.”
Juliette nodded and took the empty seat.
“My name’s Todd,” he said as he began to deal the cards. “That’s Mac and Seamus… and he’s… what’s your name again, feller?”
“Miguel,” the man that had first called her attention said. “And you are, señorita?”
“Juliette,” she said simply.
She was unwilling to give her last name if they did not offer theirs. Miguel seemed to notice this and surveyed her again with a small smirk. His eyes trained on what was visible of her necklace, before his gaze moved back to Todd.
“Give me a good hand, señor, I need another drink,” Miguel said.
“My friend you’ve had plenty,” Todd scoffed.
It was awfully early in the morning to be drinking. She wondered if he had time to kill as well or if he was simply drinking to be drinking.
“If you don’t mind me askin’, miss, what are you doin’ all the way out here?” Seamus asked.
She glanced over at him. He was remarkably less interesting than Miguel. He seemed identical to half the men in Strawberry, all honest and working, but indescribably dull.
“Travelling,” Juliette said.
“Just travellin’?” Todd asked. “Ain’t goin’ anywhere in particular?”
“Not at the moment,” Juliette said.
Juliette was still unused to being asked questions like this. Ones that seemed perfectly harmless, but she knew were not. Information was not something she liked to give freely. Edmond called her distrusting. She knew that was true, but she was not a fool. Trusting people was a dangerous endeavor, not something she would grant strangers without a return.
“Buy in’s two dollars fifty,” Seamus said.
Juliette produced the money and set it on her side as Todd handed each person their hand. The first hand started slow. Seamus folded quickly and Todd followed. Miguel kept raising his bet, unwavering as each card in the middle was revealed. Juliette decided to fold as well. Mac went all in and Miguel met it.
They revealed their hands and Miguel won with a king and a four. Mac groaned.
"Dammit," he growled.
Mac left the table irritably. Juliette watched him leave for a moment while Seamus readied the next set of cards.
"Don't worry about 'im," Todd said. "He is always upset over somethin'."
The next round started and Miguel began with a low bet, but Seamus still folded.
“They’ve been playing it safe all game,” Miguel said as Todd folded.
“I ain’t keen on losin’ money to a drunk,” Todd huffed.
“You already lost most of it, might as well give the rest to me,” Miguel said.
“He don’t get any less annoyin’,” Seamus provided. “Be glad he ain’t singin’.”
“I find him amusing,” Juliette decided.
“That’s the spirit, señorita,” Miguel laughed.
As they played more Juliette slowly began to find each of their tells. Miguel’s became significantly more obvious the more he drank, but he didn’t seemed deterred to stop even after losing two hands back to back. Todd backed out after.
“What do you do?” Juliette asked Miguel.
“I am a bounty hunter,” Miguel provided.
Juliette considered this. She had a hard time seeing him hunting down bounties, but right then she couldn’t imagine him walking straight either.
“He’s pretty good,” Seamus admitted begrudgingly. “Got the rascals that stole my sheep.”
“I don’t remember that,” Miguel said.
“You were drunk then too; your partner did all the talkin’.”
“That sounds right,” Miguel decided.
Seamus left shortly after, leaving only Miguel and Juliette. She had made a considerable dent in Miguel’s winnings, but backed out as she heard the train pull in.
“That’s it?” Miguel asked. “I wanted to win that necklace.”
“You think you would win it drunk?” Juliette mused.
“I’m not drunk yet,” Miguel scoffed.
Juliette shook her head and headed back to the window. The man greeted her instantly.
“How can I help you?”
“I should have a letter, Juliette Bellerose,” she provided.
“Bellerose?” Miguel repeated. “That sounds familiar… do you have a wanted poster?”
“Me?” Juliette repeated in surprise. “I do not, as far as I am aware.”
Miguel considered this as Juliette turned back to the mail clerk.
“These are for you,” he said as he handed the letters to her.
“Thank you,” Juliette said.
She walked back towards Fleur.
Juliette flipped through her mail with a small frown. Nothing she wanted. She had been hoping for a letter from the exhibit manager in Saint Denis, but that was still missing. She needed something better than just landscape photos with a deer in it. It was hardly impressive. Pretty, yes, but anyone with a camera could do it. She needed something… better. What that was, she had no idea.
She considered herself an adequate photographer for the time she had put it into it. It was not easy, but nothing was. She loved the challenge of it, it was completely unique to anything she had done before.
Photography was not something she had ever considered worthwhile until the past year. Ironically it had been her most profitable venture. She’d fallen into it naturally, started only for a hobby, but slowly started to do it more and more. She would be riding down a path and see something interesting and she would stop. She could do that now; she could stop and go wherever she wanted. Before life was moving too quickly for her to stop and look around… Now she could breathe.
It was a strange feeling. At first it had left her feeling anxious, as if she were being left behind. She was so used to being bombarded with new information and problems to solve day after day, never getting a true break. Even parties and galas had a purpose, she could not sit idly by… but she used to like being busy, liked being needed. Now… she wanted to be forgotten.
Coming to America was quite possibly her biggest mistake, one that might get her killed… but it was a mistake she had to make.
Juliette was on her own for the first time and she never regretted it. Slowly she was discovering what she liked, and evidently, that included photography. Was it useless? Not too long ago she knew her answer… now she was not sure. Art had always been a mystery to her. People went to galleries to view art, she had been a few times, but she had never enjoyed it. Now she wondered if she would, if walking down the gallery with a clear mind would help. Juliette liked art well enough, but she had never stopped to look.
“Anything good, señorita?” Miguel asked.
“No,” Juliette said.
“You should buy me a drink with your earnings,” Miguel suggested.
“You need a cold bucket of water,” Juliette readily returned.
“Ay perhaps,” Miguel said. “But I’d rather be drinking.”
“You are drinking,” Juliette said pointedly.
“My beer is empty,” Miguel said. “Tell you what, you buy me a drink and I’ll teach you to shoot!”
Juliette considered this. He was sufficiently drunk already and she doubted he’d remember this deal. Yet… it could come in handy. She did need to learn to shoot a gun better. While she was not against dying in America, she did not want to go down easy. She was all too aware she made an easy target.
“You should learn,” Miguel said. “You’ll run into trouble around here, plenty of outlaws wandering.”
“Are you a good shot?” Juliette asked.
“Of course! I am a bounty hunter and I am still alive.”
That was a fair point. He was better than her, which was all that mattered.
“Alright,” Juliette decided. “As long as you do not drink yourself to death.”
“As if I would ever be so lucky,” Miguel cackled.
Juliette frowned. That was awfully morbid. She was getting more used to gallows humor; it was not something she had much experience with before. She glanced around the platform and saw where Miguel had been getting his drinks, on the other side of the mail building was a small store. She bought a beer and brought it back to Miguel.
“I knew I liked you,” Miguel said.
“Enjoy yourself, monsieur,” Juliette said with a shake of her head.
“You as well, señorita. Try not to get shot!”
“Will you remember this?” Juliette asked.
“Who knows,” Miguel said.
Juliette stared at him for a moment, before returning to Fleur. He was an interesting man. She could not quite understand how he survived, but maybe he was different sober. Her gaze drifted to one of the horses hitched not far from Fleur. It was a paint horse, covered in reddish brown and white splotches. The saddle had bullet holes in it, and rifles holstered to it. There was a lasso attached to it as well, blood staining part of it.
She looked back at Miguel uncertainly, before guiding Fleur towards Strawberry.
There were many interesting people she had run into over the past few months, few of which she got to hear their full story. She wondered if she’d ever learn his.
Juliette led Fleur down the path towards Strawberry, her thoughts drifting to the stranger she’d met days ago. Arthur Morgan. He was someone she wanted to talk to again. Someone she knew she should avoid but found herself curious.
Her mother had always warned her curiosity would get her killed.

Week_seven // Case Study
Hi Guys,
This week in your tutorial class you'll be debating privacy - specifically should the government or government agencies collect and have access to your data for good purposes, or should citizens, e.g. you, have a right to privacy which stops them?
This is an important topic which you should form views about as a thinking citizen.
There is no right and wrong answer here - there are many differing opinions in society held by sensible people - but there are right and wrong approaches to working out your opinion. Work it out based on careful analysis and consideration of as many facts and diverse points of view as you can find. And then, when you have worked out your position, be open minded and prepared to change it as you learn and observe new things.
You'll debate it in class. make sure you are able to debate both sides as you won't get to pick which side you are on in the debate :)
cheers,
Richard

“You sign up for a nominal fee each week or month and all the different pricing for public or private providers is built into it,” he said. “This may sound like a pipe dream – but it’s almost a reality in London … I don’t think it’s unrealistic to see the same kind of service being introduced here in Sydney in the near future.”
According to Constance, there has been a 4.7% increase in public transport passengers in the past 12 months. There were 16m extra bus trips in the 2017-18 financial year, compared with the 12 months before
2019 - AFR discusses Facial Recognition
Entering Alibaba's new FlyZoo Hotel in Huangzhou brings one thought: where are all the staff? The decor is a mixture of art gallery and moon base. Check-in is by facial scan for the 290 rooms at a waist-high podium with a glowing base that reflects on the glossy floor. Calling a lift to get to your room is a matter of peering into a camera which recognises your face and takes you to the right floor. Another face scan opens your room. You can sink onto your bed without speaking to a single person.
2019 - Australian Views on Surveillance
Australians tend to accept government surveillance, particularly if they think it necessary or trust the government, according to a recent study.
But they’re only lukewarm about it. So if such surveillance continues to increase, people might reach a turning point and adopt some basic measures to “hide” themselves.
The government recently passed the Telecommunications and Other Legislation Amendment (Assistance and Access) Act 2018, which allows government agencies greater access to encrypted messages, like those sent over WhatsApp.
Mild acceptance: Our research aimed to address this by surveying 100 Australian residents about their views on government surveillance. Just more than half (52) said they accept government surveillance.
(Research -> can this be reliable, who are they..)
1. Is surveillance needed?
2. Do I trust the government?
2018 - Facial Recognition Used by Aus Authorities
NSW police and crime agencies are preparing to use a new national facial recognition system to rapidly match pictures of people captured on CCTV with their driver’s licence photo, to detect criminals and identity theft.
Under new laws the federal and state governments will be able to access data and photos from passports, driver licences, and visas for a national facial recognition system called the “National Facial Biometric Matching Capability”
A road in Xiangyang, China equipped with facial recognition technology, displays photos of jaywalkers alongside their name and identification number.
The NSW Government has allocated $52.6 million over four years to support The Capability. The NSW Minister for Counter-Terrorism David Elliott said it would enable authorities “to quickly identify a person of interest to help keep the community safe."
2017 - Benefits of Surveillance (Skip to What Intelligence Officials are Saying About…)
In recent years, Western governments have come under sharp criticism for their use of surveillance technology. They have been accused of sweeping up massive amounts of information without evidence of the technologies being effective in improving security.
Surveillance technology is pervasive in our society today, leading to fierce debate between proponents and opponents. Government surveillance, in particular, has been brought increasingly under public scrutiny, with proponents arguing that it increases security, and opponents decrying its invasion of privacy. Since the Snowden leaks, critics have loudly accused governments of employing surveillance technologies that sweep up massive amounts of information, intruding on the privacy of millions, but with little to no evidence of success.
2015 Australian Metadata Retention Laws (Read whatever you consider relevant)
The Act is the third tranche of national security legislation passed by the Australian Parliament since September 2014.[2] Pursuant to s 187AA, the following types of information need to be retained by telecommunication service providers:
Incoming and outgoing telephone caller identification
Date, time and duration of a phone call
Location of the device from which phone call was made
Unique identification number assigned to a particular mobile phone of the phones involved in each particular phone call
The email address from which an email is sent
The time, date and recipients of emails
The size of any attachment sent with emails and their file formats
Account details held by the internet service provider (ISP) such as whether or not the account is active or suspended.[3]
2013 - Opinion: Why We Need Government Surveillance
Edward Snowden's leaks of classified intelligence already have him being compared to Daniel Ellsworth of the Pentagon Papers and Bradley Manning of the WikiLeaks fame. Snowden felt compelled to leak valuable documents about the NSA's surveillance programs.
The 29-year-old was willing to give up his $200,000 job, girlfriend, home in Hawaii and his family. He boldly pronounced, "I'm willing to sacrifice all of that because I can't in good conscience allow the U.S. government to destroy privacy, Internet freedom and basic liberties for people around the world with this massive surveillance machine they're secretly building."
The current threat by al Qaeda and jihadists is one that requires aggressive intelligence collection and efforts. One has to look no further than the disruption of the New York City subway bombers (the one being touted by DNI Clapper) or the Boston Marathon bombers to know that the war on al Qaeda is coming home to us, to our citizens, to our students, to our streets and our subways.
This 21st century war is different and requires new ways and methods of gathering information. As technology has increased, so has our ability to gather valuable, often actionable, intelligence. However, the move toward "home-grown" terror will necessarily require, by accident or purposefully, collections of U.S. citizens' conversations with potential overseas persons of interest.
An open society, such as the United States, ironically needs to use this technology to protect itself. This truth is naturally uncomfortable for a country with a Constitution that prevents the federal government from conducting "unreasonable searches and seizures."

WARNING - This chapter uses high levels of offensive language, including insults and nasty comments about these certain Tubers. I obviously do not hate these people, this is just for story sake. If you feel that you are going to be offended by the words here, just skip to the end. Thanks!
Anon: "Ladies and gentlemen, I am here to announce my purpose for joining this occult!"
He leans down to inspect the pages, then opens the large book to the page he was looking for, a large slam echoed the rooms. In it lies a cell phone, and he pulls it out.
Anon: "Now, as I load my information, allow me to give some context. Most of you are aware of a popular video website called 'YouTube', correct?"
Lucifer: "You mean that stupid website that forbids copyrighted material and is full of pampering, self-absorbed morons?"
Anon: "Yes, exactly! And don't forget about ad revenue!"
His YouTube app has loaded, and he begins to search, both for his content, and in his notebook.
Anon: "Now then, I have four specific specimens who I believe deserve a bit of a punishment..."
Lucifer: "Ooh, what kind of punishment?"
Leader: "Have patience, Lucifer. We cannot have anything done if we rush into it..."
Anon: "Ah, here we are!"
Anon flips over several pages and reveals a large list of names.
Anon: "For 7 years, I've putting all of my time into this YouTube matter, finding out who and what is popular during different eras, and today, I have found the perfect victims. Now, if you look at this list, it reveals YouTubers that I wish to see be taken down by my command! Most of them are the gaming community, just a heads up."
The list was insanely long, and each of the names contained some sort of extra name beside it. From the looks of it, it seemed that Anon wanted to take these Tubers and...change their names? The first 4 caught everyone's eyes.
List of Dumbasses - 2016
1. VenturianTale → Jimmy Casket
2. JackSepticEye → AntiSepticEye
3. Markiplier → Darkiplier, Yandereplier, Authorplier, Googleplier
4. Pewdiepie → Lucius-pie
Anon: "Let's see here, ah! VenturianTale, the first channel on my list! To keep this simple, I'll make a demonstration and start off with the first four names, to warm us all up. If this is a success, we continue this tradition every October!"
He pulls up a video of some brunette man wearing a blue hoodie, screaming like a girl at some stupid animatronic animal jumpscare.
Anon: "Now then, here's out first Tuber, Venturian, aka Jordan Frye, a American guy who is known for playing Gmod and has 2.43 million subscribers. Even though that's not a large number compared to other channels, it still eludes me how a man in his 20s spends his time playing stupid mods with his retarded siblings. Yes, this isn't a solo channel, he has 3 other siblings who are equally guilty of this cringeworthy dungheep."
Random Occult Member 4: "No wonder they only have less than 3 million subscribers..."
Anon: "However, there is something that caught my attention from them during my studies...on their Gmod murder series, Venturian has created an original character named 'Jimmy Casket', a crazed murderer who happens to have some sort of personality disorder. It's a long, boring story as to why that is, but the point is...whenever Jordan plays as Jimmy, it seems to be one of the few times he goes insane and turns into someone else...someone dangerous...someone...evil.."
Random Occult Member 2: "Interesting..."
Anon: "Now, onto our next Tuber..."
Not even 3 seconds into the next video, and several of the Tubers covered their ears in pain from obnoxious singing and shouting. Luckily, Anon came prepared as he grabbed powerful earmuffs during his searching.
Anon: "Is the ear bleeding done?"
Everyone: "TURN THAT SHIT OFF!"
Anon: "With pleasure..."
Anon took off his earmuffs and paused the video. From the screen, and the audio, this Tuber is European man with bright green hair and a VERY loud personality.
Anon: "Our next Tuber is JackSepticEye, aka Sean McLoughlin, an Irish gamer with 12.36 million subscribers. I have no idea how the hell he's able to scream and shout for more than 20 minutes without a sore throat, but that is a gift he should never have been born with. This man is irritating, and he seems to overreact to every little fucking thing he plays! And he's friends with an eyeball that's LITERALLY septic! He's FRIENDS with a toxic fucking eyeball!"
Random Occult Member 2: "Greaaaaat, as if this man wasn't unlikable enough, now he's a gross slob..."
Anon: "...Riiight...now then, despite his annoyance, he also has a darker side to him that, this time, was created by his fanbase. Since his YouTuber name implies that he's all septic, it only makes sense that his dark side implies that he's antiseptic, and it's quite an irony. Recently, some of Jack's videos are giving canon appearances of this alter ego, and it helps give one a glimpse of what his true design looks like..."
Lucifer: "Ooh, now THAT is something I would KILL to see!"
Anon: "...Okaaaaay then...Next up is the pure definition of a manchild. Do not be fooled from his appearance."
The next Tuber who was on screen was an Asian-looking guy with an extremely American accent, red dyed hair, square glasses, and a skin tight shirt, playing some horror game about a rabbit.
Anon: "This here is Markiplier, aka Mark Fischbach, and this is another American Tuber here, with 14.55 million subscribers."
Random Occult Member 3: "Ooh, this guy has quite the bod..."
Anon: "Hey, remember what I said earlier? This person may look handsome on the outside, but inside, he's a scaredy-cat and...a bit of a crybaby...He's also really stupid."
Anon fast-forwarded the video, and the man screamed loudly and flew backwards in his seat, with his jaw dropped to the floor.
Anon: "See what I mean? Oh, and this guy seems to have a weird thing for boxes, considering he's friends with one."
Anon then clicks on another video with the man playing with some sort of small box creature with a big baby face and cartoony hands, and they're making stupid noises and faces.
Lucifer: "How in the hell did he even-?"
Anon: "It's best not to ask right now. Besides, I didn't get to the real meat here. Mark is unique, because he has not one alter ego, but FOUR!"
All Members: "FOUR?!"
Anon went into his photo album and pulled up a collage for 4 characters that looked eerily similar to the manchild.
Anon: "You heard me right, 4 alternate egos! The main one, and the most iconic, is his dark side named...Darkiplier...I know, hilarious. This ego has an interesting history. He originally started off as Mark trying to be "scary" to his audience, and this soon turned to a whole new persona. The last time Dark was seen canonically on-screen was a video named "relax", but I've been hearing rumors about the new appearance of Dark; it consisted something of him being all black-and-white, in a formal suit, and 3D effects..."
Lucifer: "Wouldn't that be cool to see?"
Anon: "Ha, tell me about it. Now then, the next persona is known as 'Googleplier', and this one is pretty recent. From Matthias' video 'Google IRL', Googleplier is a real-life Google machine who can answer any question, along with having an obsession with destroying mankind...to be honest, this one is my most favorite. Unfortunately, Googleplier has a retarded weakness against too many questions."
Nobody said a word, but they all seemed to have some sort of prediction that Anon is, in some way, similar to Googleplier's personality.
Anon: "Third one has a bit of 'style', if style meant a weeb who wants to kill everyone for their lover. This is 'Yandereplier', but I'm calling him Yandere Mark for short. For those who don't speak weeb, a yandere is a character in anime who acts nice but kills peers behind their love interest's back. Yandere Mark actually started once Mark started playing an indie game called 'Yandere Simulator'. Basically, the game is shit, and the developer seems like an asshole. But this persona has definitely intrigued me. To have a fake persona to hide your true identity from the one you love? Seems like the perfect ego to hide crimes."
From the weird smile/grimace on Anon's face, the group was wondering if Anon has dealt with a "yandere" before.
Anon: "Last persona is a lesser known one, but holds great promise. Meet Authorplier! Honestly, he doesn't have an official name besides 'The Author', but I'll be calling him Author Mark for now. This persona was created back in 2013 in a mini-series called 'Danger in Fiction'. Honestly, most of the videos consist of stupid, immature potty humor, but the parts that I find to be BRILLIANT is the character's appearance and his power to write stories to torture his victims. See, with Author Mark, he has a special book that plans out the victim's fate, and he wants the victim to follow it, or else he'll end them faster with his bat."
Lucifer: "Now THAT one is my favorite!"
Anon: "And FINALLY, the last YouTuber on this list is..."
Anon quickly went back to his YouTube app and typed away, and everyone was anticipating for who was the last Tuber.
Anon: "PewDiePie, aka Felix Kjellberg! Not only is this guy the biggest gaming YouTuber, he is the biggest YouTuber of all time, having 48.17 MILLION subscribers!"
Random Occult Member 1: "48 million?!"
Random Occult Member 2: "He could have his own country with this many people!"
Lucifer: "This guy must be rich for playing games all day!"
Anon: "HOWEVER! I must point out that Felix does not play as many games as he used to in his hay day. Still though, he is no exception...the fact that this annoying Swedish man can entertain or cause controversy for stupid games or unlogical statements is beyond me. If there's one thing I cannot stand about him, it's his enormous ego, acting like he's a mighty god. He kind of reminds me another YouTuber, I think his name was Joke Pole, but he's not a gamer."
Random Occult Member 3: "What's Felix's alter ego?"
Anon: "Ooh, now this is a tricky one...see, Felix doesn't have an official persona like the others, especially since none of them have a canon appearance or voice. However, one I did choose is similar to Yandere Mark and Jimmy Casket, where this one is based off a game that Felix played named 'Lucius'. See, 'Lucius' was a game he played back in 2012, and it's about a boy with the powers of Satan; his main objective is to kill his family members without causing suspicion. For a while, people loved Felix playing as this demon-writhing kid, and he seemed to take on the personality quite well, although he had a strange obsession with a beach ball."
Leader: "I see..."
Anon: "And that's everything I wanted to say! I only have these personas, but these people have a SHIT ton of more personas than I could count, a lot of them were fucking stupid. I only chose the ones that caught my eye, which were coincidentally the popular ones."
Lucifer: "The power of shitty fanbases..."
Anon: "And this is only the start...once I make these personas a reality with a special recipe I have made, they will cause havoc, ruin the reputations of these YouTubers once and for all! These are only with 4, imagine what it would be like with every other YouTuber gamer, or YouTubers in general, big and small, destroying the platform and taking down Internet entertainment with it!"
Everyone gasped and stared in awe as Anon caught his breath from all his speaking.
Anon: "So...am I in?"

Design neon sign for bedroom
Neon signs are a fun way to express yourself and bring a sense of humor to any place. These signs are used in bars and restaurants to draw customers and increase their exposure. Because of the increase in popularity of Instagram and Pinterest, unconventional decoration has seen a significant rise in popularity. These lights are now more popular than ever. The bedroom is a very popular space for neon signs. You can add a fun and artsy touch to your bedroom with neon signs. Neon signs can not only be visually pleasing, but they also offer a fun way to personalize the bedroom.
Here's more on the following topics:
You can personalize your bedroom with neon signs
In the bedroom, where can you install neon signs
Faux neon signs to the bedroom
The size of neon signs
The energy consumption of neon signs
Consider these points before purchasing a neon sign
HOW CAN YOU PERSONALIZE A BEDROOM WITH NEON IGNS?
ADD IDENTITY to your BEDROOM
Personalised neon can make a space feel more personal. Your bedroom can feel personal with neon lights that spell or signify your name. Neon lights are a fun way to express your individuality. A personal neon sign can make a child's bedroom feel more special and give them a sense of belonging. You can also use neon lights in your bedroom to create a special space for your child.
A custom neon sign for the bedroom can also be made to suit your individual needs. It will give you a feeling of individuality as well as excitement. You can have custom signs made, rather than pre-made signs that are available in stores.
When designing a custom neon sign, you'll be able generally to specify the following:
Type of backboard or mounting
Depending on your provider, you might also be able give the sign sophisticated lighting features, such as the ability to flash or dim.
CREATE A SPECIFIC MOD IN YOUR BEDROOM
The best way to set the mood for your bedroom is with neon signs. To create a peaceful atmosphere in your bedroom, you should use colours like light purple, blue, and green. If you enjoy the natural world, green signs can be a good choice. It is possible to create a relaxing atmosphere with soothing images such as stars and moons.moon feather
It's easy to lighten your mood by using neon signs in orange and yellow.
A neon sign that is pink or red could suggest romance, especially signs like hearts and lips
A bedroom mood can be created by spelled out words. You can create a warm, cozy feeling by writing words like "home", "dream" or similar. Positive phrases such as "be positive" and "good vibrations" can also help create a happy, inspiring feeling.
CONTRASTING BEDROOM COLOURS MAY BE USEN
You can make your bedroom more creative and mysterious by using neon signs. You can make your bedroom appear cool and artistic by using a glowing sign in dark. Bright, striking signs can also make your bedroom appear unusual. A great way to create a different bedroom is to use contrasting colours in the bedroom's scheme. Contrasting colors like yellow and red can give your bedroom a unique look. This will give your bedroom a dramatic look.
WHERE CAN THE NEON SIGNS GO IN THE BEDROOM
Since the 1960s, neon signage has been an integral part of cafes and bars. They are a popular way to get customers in a wide variety of businesses premises, including hair salons and shops to tattoo studios and garages.
NEON LIGHTS - BEDROOM CEILING
Popular options for lighting the bedroom ceiling include neon lights. It is possible to make the ceiling look like the night sky by placing stars and moons. Neon lights can also be installed on the ceiling to save space. It is a smart way to make the most of space if your walls are overcrowded with decorations.
NEON-WALL LIGHTS FOR YOUR BEDROOM
The wall offers plenty of space and is an ideal place to experiment with different styles.
NEON LIGHTS UNDER THE BED
It is a great way to express your love by placing neon lights above your bed. Placing a romantic message above the bed is an effective and popular way of expressing your feelings. A romantic way to set the mood is to place shapes like hearts, roses, or lips over your bed. You can easily set the tone with simple phrases, such as "love", "xxx", and other similar words.
NEON IGNS IN PICTURE FILES
You can use neon lights to put a quote on a picture frame or add some humor to your room. You can create a new bedroom by using neon signs instead of traditional photos.
WHAT ARE FAUX SIGNS NEON FOR THE BEDROOM?
Traditional neon signs are typically made from soft-lead glass and filled inert gas. Faux neon signs, on the other hand, are made from thermoplastic Acrylic known as Altaglus (or Perspex). Faux neon signs are an alternative to traditional neon signs. Faux neon signs utilize environmentally friendly LEDs to illuminate in various shapes and colors.
FAUX NEO SIGNS TO THE BEDROOM: ARE YOU SAFE?
Also known as LED neon sign, faux neon signs can be safer and more economical to operate than traditional signs. LED neon signs do not produce heat and are safe to touch unlike traditional neon signs that can get extremely hot. LED neon requires less power which results in lower electricity costs and better safety. They also don't release any harmful gases. They can withstand shattering and are more sturdy than glass due to their unique design. With LED neon signs, you can get that special glow in your bedroom without worrying about breaking.
HOW BIG CAN THE NEON SIGNS IN A BEDROOM BE?
The sign size depends on how big the bedroom is. A sign with text only will look larger than one that contains both text and logo/image. A sign with more lines of text than one will take up more space. Learn more about your options for custom neon signs.
HOW MUCH ELECTRICITY DO NEON-SIGNS USE
It is less energy-intensive than you think to use neon signs. Modern neon signs have a 240v transformer that uses about the amount of electricity used by a single light bulb. LED neon signs consume only 15% to 20% of traditional neon power for a similar job.
WHAT SHOULD YOU CHECK BEFORE I BUY A NEO SIGN FOR MY BEDROOM
Check that your sign meets the required standards before you buy it. Neon signs must adhere to BS EN50107. This British Standard describes how luminous discharge tube installation must be made. They must also be compliant with the IET wiring regulations, another British Standard known BS 7671. These specifications describe how these types and installations should wire. British Standards Institute approves NeonPlus signs as CE Compliant.
Check out our gallery to see some examples of our LED signs. View our selection to find out more about the many design options.

The First Virtual Chernobyl Exhibition Presented During the COVID-19
The First Virtual Chernobyl Exhibition Presented During the COVID-19 Pandemic
ARTEFACT: CHOrnobyl is the first in the world virtual exhibition dedicated to the Chernobyl accident that was created for an online experience and in VR headsets, presented on the biggest festival of digital and audiovisual art in Spain MADATAC XI with the support of the Cultural Foundation of Ukraine.
The exhibits of ARTEFACT:CHOrnobyl are very diverse works. Among them are the artworks of famous Ukrainian artists: The Chornobyl series by Maria Prymachenko, who lived on the edge of the Exclusion Zone, a series of prophetic paintings by Ivan Marchuk, a 3D photo by Arsen Savadov, as well as the artworks of young artists, whose names are new in Ukrainian media art.
VIDEO: https://youtu.be/oS7NA6WND80
More than 100 Ukrainian artists have been working on creating ARTEFACT: CHOrnobyl, so that more than 50 new artworks could be seen by the whole world online and completely free from the PC. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and quarantine restrictions this year the festival MADATAC is held online, the so the exhibits are presented in virtual space of Chernobyl on the web page artefact.live. (http://artefact.live)
The artists could learn to work in virtual spaces and to immerse themselves in the topic of the Chernobyl’s accident during the unique educational art residence by ARTEFACT, where most of the participants created their exhibits. The virtual space also includes the best works of the exhibition ARTEFACT:Chernobyl33, which were shown in Kyiv, in 2019. The artworks were created with VR and AR technologies, laser and video installations, neurointerface technology and parametric architecture and also have been completely transferred to cyberspace. The full list of artists and their exhibits is still being updated.
Svitlana Korshunova, the coordinator of the ARTEFACT project: “The first virtual exhibition dedicated to Chernobyl during the COVID-19 pandemic became a milestone event and a great challenge for us at the same time. For the first time, all artists presented their works virtually, creating numerous virtual worlds for their exhibits. Art is just starting to take over these areas, but it seems that they are created just for it. And for the viewer, everything is familiar and natural there, because we already spend most of our time online. Therefore, thanks to such technologies, art becomes closer to people. It’s getting closer to modern times and, as always, reflects its era better than anything”.
The closed preview of the exhibition took place in the digital gallery ART AREA in Kyiv, where visitors could get into the virtual exhibits on huge screens and in VR headsets. Thanks to modern technologies of virtual cyberspace, each artist was able to create their own world with its special atmosphere and feelings. Once the quarantine restrictions are over, the exhibition can be presented offline in galleries around the world.

The founder of the MADATAC festival, Iury Lech, already goes ahead of world trends and is ready for a full virtualization of his festival.
Iury Lech tells about the ARTEFACT project and its role in Ukrainian media art:
“Ukrainians are a very talented nation. Through such social and cultural projects, through a modern rethinking of the past, you can tell the world who you really are.
I hope that ARTEFACT will be an exponent of the emerging avant-garde Ukrainian art, and the world can understand what the real Ukraine is. Also, the project can help to reorganize Ukrainian society around the concept of homogeneous, but at the same time opened society to the new international trends, so Ukraine could again be the great country as it used to, but due to the unfavorable circumstances was deprived of its cultural identity and freedom”.
ARTEFACT is an innovative Ukrainian social and cultural project that with the new technologies of contemporary art draws attention to important issues, based on the example of the Chernobyl accident. The artists invite us to rethink the tragedy of our past. The ARTEFACT project considers the disaster of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant not only as a man-made, but as an informational catastrophe, full of disinformation, fake news and propaganda with the purpose to cover the real dimensions of the disaster. The accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant is an example of the informational catastrophe within one state that can have consequences for the whole world.
The project is implemented with the support of the Cultural Foundation of Ukraine, the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine, the Ukrainian State Agency for the Management of Exclusion Zones, the National Chernobyl Museum, the European Chernobyl Institute and the Center PRYPYAT.com.
MADATAC is the biggest media art festival in Spain for the last 10 years, which received 3 EFFE Awards – 2015-2016, 2017-2018 and 2019-2020. It’s held annually in Madrid. The goal of the festival is to engage the audience around audiovisual art, video art, art of digital and new media. The idea of the festival is to unite artists in a collective laboratory. In fact, this is one of the largest media art gatherings, where Ukrainian works are shown for the first time this year.
Ukrainian Cultural Foundation is a state institution created in 2017 as a new competition-based model of state funding and promotion of initiatives in the field of culture and creative industries. The Foundation’s activities, according to current legislation, are an integral part of the policy and priorities determined by the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine.

What: Virtual exhibition ARTEFACT: CHOrnobyl
Online: http://artefact.live/ or https://madatac.es/artefact-chornobil-33
When: starting from October 26
We are open to answer all your questions, give comment and event information, as well as give you post-release with images and video.
ARTEFACT: CHOrnobyl explanation of the artworks:
1- “Genus. Chernobyl. Code depressurization” by Tetyana Zubchenko.
A symbol of femininity and connection with ancestors, where the video demonstrates how anxiety in the voice distorts the space and provides more information than all the media of that time.
2- “White Souls” by Iryna Vorona. The installation is dedicated to the pure and white souls of those who have gone to eternity. It is a microcosm of your own existence, hundreds of options of events with its knots and points of contact, followed by a new round of events, relationships and emotions.
3-Mimosa/Multifaced by Serhii Nizhinskiy y Volodymyr Kovbasa.
Mimosa is a new goddess of media quazi-reality and information warfare. Her name translates from Greek as the one who has many faces, which is synonymous with hypocritical, faceless and ugly. Instead of a head, the goddess has a cube that continuously broadcasts fakes that can be destroyed with the neurointerface.
4- Fakemet by Oleg Kharch.
Every day we receive a lot of new information, but not always we verify it, we cannot always be sure that it is true. We are used to trusting everything we are told, sometimes we ourselves are carriers of fakes. The installation offers us two options: believe what we are told to or verify the information.
5- Reactor Rods by Oksana Buzyak, Yaroslav Kostenko (VJ Yarkus) and Denys Voloshyn. The installation symbolizes the rods of the nuclear reactor and the process of their operation at the time of the disaster in Chernobyl in 1986. This is a visualization of processes that no one can see with the naked eye.
6- Radiation by Yaroslav Kostenko.
The light and laser performance tells us about the stages of the Chernobyl catastrophe, accompanied by the track of Denys Voloshyn and the play of actors immerses you in a special atmosphere that allows you to reconsider the perception of the disaster.
7- Atom Reaction/ Interactive Map by Eugen Vashchenko.
This infographic audiovisual installation symbolizes the behavior pattern of the uranium atom in the initial stages of the fission and the map of the spread of radioactive waste contamination.
8- Emission by Valeriy Korshunov and Astian Rey.
In the hospital bed lies a "man" who emits light. The exhibition is dedicated to the moment of emission of inner energy of a person. It is an example of a survivor of the Chernobyl accident suffering from radiation disease, which shows us that surviving an accident like this does not mean being able to carry on with a life as before.
9- A Landscape that No One Will See by Volodimyr Gulich.
The roof of the reactor at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant is like the other side of the moon, a place that no one will be able to see. There is no life there because of the highest level of radiation contamination. It became so because of human irresponsibility.
10- The Ashes of the Nuclear Age by Valeriy Korshunov and Astian Rey.
The installation is a reflection on the topic of heroism and sacrifice of people who were involved in the aftermath of the Chernobyl accident.
11- Video 360º and VR of the ARTEFACT: Chernobyl 33
Here you can experience the last year exhibition ARTEFACT: Chernobyl 33 in a 360º video or a VR headset.
12- Chernobyl Lights by Valeriy Korshunov.
The largest digital sculpture Chernobyl Lights at the Duga radar, which is also the largest laser and light installation in Ukraine on October 23 2019. The record is registered by the Book of Records of Ukraine.
13- The Flags of More than 40 Countries Lighted on the Chernobyl Arch. Valeriy Korshunov.
The flags of more than 40 countries were projected on the world's biggest movable structure, the New Safe Confinement, also known as the Arch, erected over the destroyed reactor of Unit 4 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The artist dedicated the action to the Ukrainian Flag Day and the Independence Day of Ukraine, which was celebrated on 23 and 24 of August 2020.
14- ARTEFACT Prometheus by Valeriy Korshunov.
It is a digital sculpture presented during the last Burning Man 2020 that was held virtually. The project demonstrates the hand of the mythical god Prometheus who once brought fire to the people, but in this case the hand holds the artifact, as a symbol of awakening.
15- Verity (“Pravda”) by Olesya ( Shambur) Geraschenko
A selection of issues of the newspaper "Pravda" during the Chernobyl accident in video format 360º. When did the All-Union newspaper report such a serious accident with a radiation leak? Only on the 12th day and not on the first page, but with a small article inside.
16- Be Ready! by Oleg Kharch.
The name of the artwork refers to a motto of the Soviet pioneers, represented by 500 red pioneer ties. On May 1, 1986, everyone demonstrated in Kyiv for Workers' Day, although the capital was heavily contaminated with radiation. No one was ready or prepared for that.
17- Sarcophagus / Piano-Camera-Obscura by Waldemart Klyuzko and Igor Belsky.
This is a mutation of a musical instrument that turns into a camera obscura. Inside you can see how the camera obscura works, in which the world is turning upside down. It is a symbol of an upside down world after the Chernobyl accident.
18- Exodus by Dmytro Radushynskiy and Igor Bondarchuk.
In the virtual room you are at the end of a queue. There are a lot of people and it is not clear what is happening ahead and only when you go out from the line, you can see the whole picture: “the queue of evolution". This installation focuses on human evolution, and not on the catastrophe itself. The catastrophe here is just a bitter step leading to the growth.
19- HPA (Hope Problem Action) by Dmytro Aranchii and Angelina Gladushevska.
The authors draw attention to excessive energy consumption, which provokes more energy production in dangerous ways, including nuclear energy production. The installation symbolizes the reflection and trace of humans on Earth – the better the reflection you leave behind you, the longer the life of the universe will be.
20- "Expanse" by Vartan Markarian.
The artwork "Expanse" is a metaphorical view of the ecological catastrophe, a call to conscious consumption of resources. The remnants of human civilization of the city of Pripyat are gradually dissolving, nature is gaining space back, houses are sprouted with trees, creating landscapes of the post-humanity world. Nature quietly dissolves the whole environment, humanity has not been able to coexist in harmony with the world.
21- Narrative of Catastrophe by Tim Voronkin.
Media reports about the Chernobyl accident starting from 1986 create a multi-layered information collage for the world community: here you will find both – sources of information and as well as sources of disinformation. And only critical thinking and new technologies will help to analyze the whole narrative about the Chernobyl catastrophe, which was formed over the time.
22- Radiotroph by Volt Agapeyev.
For some time after the Chernobyl disaster, it was believed that the existence of any life at the site of the explosion was impossible. However, in 1991 microbiologists discovered colonies of mushrooms on the wreckage of the reactor, which learned not only to live in the middle of radiation, but also to convert it into energy for themselves. Internally displaced people from Pripyat, like most Ukrainians, are similar to that mushrooms with a phenomenal ability to survive and form new connections.
23- Chernobyl – the City of Future by Oleksandra Tumyk and Oleksandra Stupakovska.
The project combines the present of Chernobyl and its possible future, which is located on the other side of the bridge. The news of the new Chernobyl shows what humanity aspires to: "There is no more dangerous nuclear waste left in the world".
24- Chernobyl Story by Alis La Luna.
It is a conceptual art project where modernity is paralleled with the past events, using GIFs to show how Chernobyl continues to exist in different forms like Youtube videos or patients with thyroid problems. We live a “normal” and modern lives today and we can perceive the disaster and all the (dis)information about the past, entangled with emotional dissonance, only from today’s point of view.
25- Genesis by Oksana Chepelyk.
The project reveals the topic of the nation's reproduction and demonstrates the ultrasound of the fetus in the body of a pregnant woman. A ball, which hangs over the woman, changes the images of babies every 1.5 minutes, when a new baby is born in Ukraine. Genesis conveys anxiety and shows the limitations of human impact on radiation.
26- Meta-Physical Space-Time by Oksana Chepelyk.
In the Moebius tape, an algorithmic society, quantum physics, consciousness and history are combined with 360º videos from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and its cooling pond. Through spatial ideas, the project turns to the search for understanding of the universe through quantum physics and human consciousness in the era of algorithmic society.
27- “Trace of Chernobyl” by Iván Dzis.
This art installation depicts and tries to draw attention to children with oncologic diseases,
associated with the Chernobyl nuclear accident. Some studies suggest that the Chernobyl accident may have caused about 1,000 cases of thyroid cancer and 4,000 cases of other cancers in Europe. The exact health consequences of this radiation exposure are still being assessed.
28- Obscurity by Ivan Dzis.
Events on the night of April 26 1986, in Chernobyl are seen through the eyes of an ordinary family. Here’s also raised the issue of disinformation in Soviet mass media about the tragic explosion. As well as the famous ballet Swan Lake by Piotr Tchaikovsky was used by Soviet media to show in times of crisis – either when a disaster happens or the leader died. That way to suppress the information.
29- Voice of Pripyat by Margo Reznik.
With the help of sounds there is a strong emotional immersion in Pripyat. It's a different mix of sounds and voices for each part of the city. For example, for the music school of Pripyat, these are the sounds of piano playing, children's laughter, popular songs of that time, the sound of a dosimeter, the noise of wind, the sounds of crickets and nature.
30- “Arc Chornobyl” by Denis Kopylov.
A gallery of the photos of the different parts of the world: Antarctica, the Arctic, Kenya, Uganda, Congo, Brazil, Papua. Exotic animals in their natural habitats, incredible landscapes and genuine emotions. All of this is reflected in the thousands of photos by traveller and photographer Denis Kopylov to show that the world is diverse and homogeneous, far and near, and incredibly beautiful at the same time.
31- Neutron flux by Viktor Arefiev.
Neutron flux is a phenomenon that occurs in a running reactor. This time he got out of control and went into the sky with a crimson light. The neutron flux is dangerous to all living things on Earth, but the light pillar that pierces the space and other galaxies, is a warning message to other extraterrestrial civilizations.
32- “Khodylymyporaiu” (We Were Walking in Heaven) by Yan Bespalko.
The world of illusion and the world of reality are connected in space. Only one moment was enough for them to collide, but the truth about the accident collapsed for the monumental and, at first glance, humanistic system. The price of illusion turned out to be too high.
33- Follow the Landscapes by Tetiana Korneieva.
The project is dedicated to the investigation of the Chernobyl tragedy through the prism of personal stories and the creation of a virtual map for rethinking danger zones and objects of forced museification.
34- Transformation. Kupava (Nadiia Chernenko).
The transformation of the traditional view on Chernobyl as a tragedy into an alternative feeling, depicted in light drawings. It all starts with real pictures from Chernobyl, which change through the associations and imagination of the author.
35- Earth by Valentina Biero.
The virtual monumental sculpture "Earth" has glass parts which allow to see the Exclusion Zone from the inside. And with the help of a teleportation capsule you can see the restored natural area. The main theme is the influence of the people on nature and environment.
36- Beautiful View by Kostiantyn Militynskii.
On May 1, 1986, the elite of the Soviet communist party received the parade from the tribune of Vladimir Lenin's mausoleum, and at the same moment blue and red lights were coming out with 30,000 roentgen from the destroyed Chernobyl nuclear reactor, which also happened to be named after Lenin.
37- The Snow City by Maria Pavlenko.
The Snow City is an utopian project about a new source of energy and the civilization that has formed around it. The search for new energy sources and the use of atomic energy provoked a large number of theories and myths. The Snow City focuses on the myth of nuclear winter.
38- Memory Board by Inna Sorochynska.
In front of you is a Memory Board, a place where you can learn many different stories. Maybe it will help to find something lost or to find someone who stayed in that past life before the Chernobyl disaster.
39- Homo Inside Out by Kostyantyn Shkurpela.
The Soviet scientific progress became a great international tragedy. The Soviet machine was a bureaucratic system. An idea in the head of a superior leader out of ignorance drove to the fatal actions of his subordinates, only to break a record that costs thousands of lives and lasts hundreds of years.
40- Hidden Threat by Yuri Gurin.
In the fight against old problems, the new generations face other invisible threats. Life shows that humanity is often unprepared for such disasters. The purpose of this project is to connect and at the same time to contrast the understanding of the conscious and true perception of modern problems in the context of the mistakes of the past.
41- Invisible Consequences by Khrystyna Khmil.
Human's actions change the human and the world around us, it depends on us what the world will be like. However, we often depend on other people's choices and actions. Here works another molecular world, invisible to our eyes, which interacts with us and becomes a part of us.
42- ZOO by Veronika Vo (CHEREDNYCHENKO).
The abstract sculptures symbolize the adaptability of a living organism. The example of the Chernobyl tragedy clearly shows how fragile the human being is, on the contrary: nature is invulnerable. What is a catastrophe for one species can be an incentive for the emergence, reproduction and development of thousands of other species.
43- Sunrise Energy. IllumiNation Team.
The central image of the installation is a divided atom, which hides a popular and used object – an incandescent lamp. The installation encourages a different look at the electric bulb, which, like 34 years ago, is powered primarily by nuclear power plants, which produce more than 50% of Ukraine's electricity, and coal-fired power plants, which poison the air. Instead, the authors offer to consider alternative energy sources.
44- “Error: Memory Cannot be read”. Vera DG.
3D sculpture in the style of calligraffiti is created in the form of a calligraphic circle, similar to the continuous movement of the sun, wind, energy, it symbolically consists of 1986 elements. Each element is an element of Iranian calligraphy, which means the word love for the millions affected by the Chernobyl tragedy.
45- ASH TRAIL by Taya Kabaeva.
ASH TRAIL is a digital installation dedicated to the Chernobyl disaster, created in TiltBrush. This is a 3D photo collage of images of victims of the tragedy, which has become a digital island of memory in VR. The author herself comes from the nuclear city of Energodar, which, in her opinion, is very similar to Pripyat.
46- Memories about Pripyat. Rita Gasanova.
This is a virtual journey to the collective memory of the inhabitants of Pripyat until 1986. On April 27, 1986, they left their homes for only three days, they thought, and, as it turned out, forever.
47- Revival of the Chernobyl Pulse. Olga Borysenko.
The parade for Workers' Day on May 1, 1986. The people are walking, and there is silence on the radio. The plane cuts their heads, because information about the Chernobyl accident is still unknown.
48- Forced Evolution by Natalia Fedoryshyn.
The Chernobyl explosion affected not only people, but also animals. Magic graphite stick, because graphite is a symbol of the highest concentration of radioactive parts, turns realistic animals into naive, distorted and mutated.
49- Maze of Progress. Lesia Strelbitska, Taya Kabaeva, Ivan Say, Igor Ishchuk.
The viewer can observe and feel from the inside the physics of the reactor processes at the time of the accident. When entering the room the person, like a neutron, sets off a chain reaction and then goes through all the key stages of the reactor’s work. And there comes the explosion, the first one and then the second one.
50- Jammer by Daniil Galkin.
For several months, the author was interfering in the radio signals of people who were not aware of that and were finding themselves within the range of his jammer. Such blocking provoked outrage in people, when the signal was interrupted. However, in the USSR the practice of blocking the radio signal was common, so it was not possible to freely receive or disseminate any information. These practices are directly related to the consequences of the silencing the Chernobyl accident.
51- Dream of Pierre Michelli or Memorial of the Victory of Saprobionts. Ksenia Gnylytska.
The beautiful world of microorganisms can be seen under a microscope. They live two hundred million years longer than human beings, pierce us, kill us or save us, and they will exist long after us. They will survive everywhere from the poles to the equator, deserts, geysers, rocks or the deep sea, despite heat or cold, high pressure or even radiation.

12 years ago Britney Spears walked out of rehab, the iPhone and the first Kardashian episode launched.. and our manic fame fixation began..
‘“10 years ago Britney Spears walked out of rehab and into Esther's Hair Salon in Los Angeles, grabbed a pair of clippers and shaved her head, citing the waiting paparazzi as motivation. Four months later the iPhone launched. The following month the first episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians aired on US TV...” (Ferrier,The Guardian)
It has now been 10 years of manic fame fixation.. with YouTube child celebrities, various TV concepts depicting baking, dancing, singing or dating amateurs. Guided by the fascination of superstars living in opulence and sharing their ‘bling’ on Instagram. And, not least, by always having a private audience in our pockets, not in its millions like for Britney Spears and the Kardashian sisters, but we are available and on-screen with everything from coffee drinking and dog walking to interior design, cooking, celebrations, walks in the rain, sunrises and sunsets.
THE GENERATION THAT GREW UP IN A SELFIE
With new media and especially social media, we have become accessible and searchable; our privacy has been exposed to a greater or lesser degree. It is no longer rare for new-borns to have posted on Facebook before they themselves are even aware of that reality. We do this as parents, because we are happy, proud and would like to share a happy moment with the world, but it means that the private photo album has received an audience that not only includes those closest to us, but an audience of perhaps another 200 or even more. Over half of all new-borns are visible online before the first day of their lives is even over. In the UK, 62% of new parents post photos of their new-born on Facebook within an hour after birth (averaging 57.9 minutes). The most popular media, according to Posteria, who carried out a survey of 2,367 parents, is Facebook (77%), followed by Instagram (48%) and then Flickr (32%).
And as they are online from birth, why not provide them with an online identity like media adviser Katie Wagner recommends: "If you're looking for a unique baby gift idea, why not give an email address with the new-born's name?" A simple and basically harmless idea. Unless we as the parents of those children growing up in a selfie are not the right ones to make that decision? Are we even aware of the consequences? Have we taken into account the ethical dimension, the question of a person's rights? And have we considered what values we are communicating to our children when we let a screen mediate relationships as a welcome ritual for the new-born? In the book Your Children are Listening: Nine Messages They Need to Hear from You, Professor of Psychology Jim Taylor outlines how values, often implicit and perhaps unconscious, communicated via actions shape our children. It is precisely these questions about values that drove Dutch designer Laura Cornet to develop baby selfie technology: New Born Fame. A mobile app with Facebook and Twitter icons that allows the new-born themselves to take pictures and post them on social media. Absurd? Maybe, but Cornet, as part of her final year project from Design Academy Eindhoven, wanted to examine the ethical dimension of our use of digital networks: "I am not against new technology. I am very concerned about the possibilities". By contrast, she problematises our lack of relating to those social or moral dilemmas, which have followed in development's wake, she explained to Fast Company."Who actually has the right to post a baby on the internet? A baby is not old enough to decide for themselves, but it is generally accepted that it is ok if a mother decides to share a photo.
FAME IS A QUEST THAT NARCISSISTS FANTASISE ABOUT
Values shape attitudes and actions; they reflect culture and define community. For example, a value such as power motivates us to seek influence and control, and a value such as social status makes us seek out attention, to strive for what we think the group would recognise us for. Yalda T. Uhls, Professor of Psychology at UCLA Children Digital Media Center, worked in cooperation with Professor of Psychology at UCLA, Patricia Greenfield, on a year-long research project into fame’s value and the effect of media development on the identity of children and adolescents. I visited them in Los Angeles in connection with the release of one of their studies. They have investigated how social structural changes drive changes in cultural values. Some of the socio-demographic changes that have influenced the prevailing values in the Western world are urbanisation, education and wealth. But the development, according to Uhls and Greenfield, which has had the greatest influence on the transformation of cultural values in recent decades is communication technology. During the 2000s and until the 2010s, the number of internet users has increased by 157%, and the use of computers for 8-18-year-olds has increased 300% over the last decade. Media development has shaped psychological development including an increase in individualisation, and, according to the Uhls and Greenfield, in the emergence of a narcissistic culture where it is all about being seen or heard by as many people as possible: “Fame is a quest that narcissists fantasise about”. Over the last eight years, as more smartphones have seriously penetrated the market, we have, according to Uhl and Greenfield, experienced an historic increase in narcissistic personality disorders in adolescents, beginning in prepubescence with a childish desire for fame. And although children’s aspirations may change and become more realistic as they get older, it is precisely in these developmental years that children begin to shape their values and self-images. Whereas children once dreamed of becoming fire-fighters, midwives, doctors or ballerinas, today they are dreaming of becoming the next Miley Cyrus or standing on the stage of a TV talent show. And Uhls and Greenfield point to the range of media and those values communicated to children and young people via both TV platforms and social media as the primary reason for this development. “Both American Idol, which shows ordinary people striving to become pop stars, and social media like Facebook that encourages people to share information about themselves in a semi-public online universe capitalises on people's fascination with fame. By pretending that almost anyone can capture a large audience, these cultural products have become a dominant global force”.
A force that has led to a change in values: thirty years ago it was the individuals place in community that was perceived as the most important value. Today, it is the dream of becoming famous.

Submit to the platform
Streaming platforms and digital distribution are a very hot topic in the music industry right now.
But whether or not you’ve taken a side on the debate, the reality is that these platforms can connect you with new listeners.
Regardless of how much you earn for each stream, you still need to put real thought into how your project will connect with listeners and create new fans.
Taking advantage of the marketing and promotion tools that platforms like your Spotify artist profile offer are great ways to distinguish yourself from the rest and get ahead.
