💘 HEART WITH ARROWㅤ—ㅤwhat and/or who do(es) your oc consider the most important to them?

ㅤthis varies a little verse to verse, so i'll hit a couple of the most significant answers!! by default in any verse though, byan considers themself the most important — they're the only person they have to consistently rely on and the only person they can trust. they've been abandoned and cast aside by so many people that they haven't let themself consider another person significant in their life since around the age of eight. they're the only person in their life who matters.

that said, it's not impossible to break through all their walls and become someone who's important to them, but it does take an incredible amount of time and effort to prove to them that you're trustworthy, that you genuinely care, and that you aren't going anywhere. whether it's worth all the work is debatable, but there are a couple of people who felt it was:

ㅤin byan's undercity verse, the world which they were created for, the person they consider most important is dox (@grimesucker). the guy basically raised them — he gave them a safe place to fall back to when they needed it, offered them shelter and food and healed their wounds. he taught them how to better protect themself, how to use their knives more effectively, and how to survive on the streets of the slums. he gave them the parental figure they never had, gave them a family in himself and all he other kids he takes care of. dox is basically their dad, and while they love to give him shit, they'd do anything for him.

ㅤin their modern verse, which has effectively become their main verse at this point, the person most important to them is absolutely, without a doubt, lena (@chronal-anomaly). the two had a bit of a rough start, but lena never turned her back on them — she's always left a door or window to her home open so they can come and go as they please, providing a place where they could safely tend to their injuries, crash for the night when other shelter wasn't available (or they didn't feel safe anywhere else), and find a meal if they needed it. she encouraged them to join the track team she coaches at school, thus helping them discover a new hobby they wouldn't have given a chance to otherwise and even make a few friends in the rest of the team. she's given them chances that they've never really been afforded by others and kept pushing for them to stick around, even when they tried to make distance out of fear that they were letting themself get too close and were going to end up hurt because of it. lena has done so much for byan, helped them improve their life in countless ways, and has finally given them a person they can trust beyond all else and rely on. she's given them security and love without trying to fundamentally change them as a person, and they aren't sure they'll ever be able to pay her back for that. lena's their big sister, and arguably the person they've become the closest with in any verse.

ㅤand last but not least, in byan's sci-fi verse/kind of a verse of its own, the person they've come to consider most important in their life is ardaka (@apexulansis). he's taken them under his wing, started to train them in the art of bounty hunting, and in doing so has given them direction in an otherwise very directionless life. he's afforded them patience where most people would lose it and give up on them, encourages them in a more positive direction without trying to outright rid them of the bad habits they're so find of, and is helping them to thrive in a world where before, they were only surviving. he's given them a safe place to say, someone to come to when they need help, and, byan would argue this is the most important, he lets them not only hold but use all of the weapons (so long as they're physically capable of lifting them, at least). he's their mentor and, though they haven't really realized it yet, is slowly becoming something more akin to family.

🍝 SPAGHETTIㅤ—ㅤwhat is/are your oc's favorite food(s)?

ㅤa few things come to mind regarding their favourite foods, but honestly? honestly? the top of the list is ramen — both the freshly made and the instant variety. ramyeon, the instant, packaged version, has been a staple in their life for as long as they can remember because it's cheap and simple to make. honestly, they kind of live on the stuff, but they rarely grow tired of it, and freshly made ramen at a restaurant is something they'll treat themself to any time they manage to get their hands on a decent chunk of money. there's just something about it for them, something that makes them feel almost cozy when they eat it — possibly, it has something to do with it being a rare constant in their otherwise tumultuous life. it's something they can always fall back on, something they know they'll enjoy every time, and there are so many different flavours and types to choose from. —byan's favourites of all, however, are the spiciest ones.

another favourite, but one that's a bit more of a luxury for them, is pizza. it's one of those things they've never had a ton of opportunities to eat, rarely being in a situation where ordering a pizza could be afforded or where they had access to a functioning oven to even heat a cheap, frozen one, but god... the memories they have of some other kid's birthday party where they served pizza, or the occasional pizza party at school growing up? those are memories they look back on fondly. pizza was such a treat for them as a kid, and it honestly still is.

ㅤextremely argumentative and very prone to angry (sometimes violent) outbursts that, even if said anger is misdirected, will be aimed at you purely for existing in the same space as them.

ㅤsometimes disappears for days at a time without any warning or any indicator throughout that time that they're okay. you'll just have to guess if they've gotten themself killed or not because they will not be answering your calls or texts.

ㅤyou will have cops showing up at the door more often than you'd like (way more often than byan would like), and if they get arrested, you're the one they're calling to come bail them out.

ㅤthe thing is, byan doesn't want to remember any of these places or people. none of them are or ever have been home or family. keeping reminders of the places and people they were miserable with gives them more importance than they deserve, and keeping ones of those they were almost happy in only serves as a painful reminder of how they weren't good enough or important enough to be kept around. they don't like to give any of these people or places the time of day once they're free of them.

even unintentional reminders and mementos have to go. naturally everything they own is tied in some way to somewhere they've lived or people they've lived with, and byan is usually pretty good at distancing themself from where they were when they got certain belongings, not necessarily associating them with any particular memories. sometimes though, that's easier said than done. the moment they start feeling any sort of emotion or start having any memories resurface when they look at a possession because 'oh, that's the top that one foster mom gave me' or 'that was my favourite jacket to sneak out of that one house in,' it's done. gone. they will literally burn it to get rid of it so there's no risk of seeing it again and no way to possibly hold on to even a piece of it. it has to be out of their life the same way the source of that memory or feeling is.

while they don't like to have reminders around of all the places and people they've been through, they do keep reminders of the lessons they've learned and the things they've survived. it started as furious scribbles and words on paper to get things off their chest which were then folded as many times as humanly possible and tucked away somewhere safe when they were really young, then over time started turning into drawings or designs specifically intended to become tattoos once they were old enough to get them. by the time they were fourteen, these did finally start becoming actual tattoos. most of them are small stick and poke ones byan has done themself, but there are several that are tied to more significant experiences in their life which they took to actual tattoo artists — admittedly, places that didn't really bother to check id and/or didn't charge much, or artists they were somewhat familiar with who were willing to give them a big discount. a lot of these more significant tattoos are hidden away where most people won't see them, but there are a couple that are a little more on display — it depends on how much of an impact the experience had on them, how important they consider having the reminder visible for themself, and how big of a trophy of their survival they see it as.

ㅤultimately, this is not completely removed from being a reminder of people and places they've had in their life but, to byan, it's a more empowering way of remembering the experiences they've lived through, the places they've been, and the things they've managed to escape.

ㅤanything that's too vegetable heavy. if that sounds childish... well, that's because it is. byan's palate is still very childlike in a lot of ways, in part because they're still young, but also due to the fact that they just haven't been able to expand their horizons much when it comes to food. in their life, food has always been about what's the most affordable, the easiest to get their hands on, or simply what's served to them.

as they experience more (better) food in years to come, they're bound to grow out of the childish distaste for vegetables. as it stands now though, mushrooms in particular are the bane of their existence — just something real freaky about those things, if you ask them.

ㅤbyan's never been a fan of holidays. they've never had reason to be, with no family to speak of and rarely being in a position to be able to celebrate. sure, the group home does a sad little version of holiday dinners for things like christmas, and they've been in foster homes during holidays where there were celebrations, but it's never really meant anything to them. holidays are just another day, though they do always enjoy when they come with days off or full-blown holidays from school.

if they have to choose a favourite, though... i mean, it has to be halloween. admittedly, this has everything to do with them being able to stroll up to someone's house and get free candy. look, the costumes are fun and all, and the spooky stuff is cool or whatever, but you just can't beat a bag full of free candy. not as a kid who's had to fight for every little thing they have.

...that said, they're also one of those kids who goes out and does 'halloween pranks' like tping peoples' homes or throwing eggs at them, alongside all their usual crimes that they can now get away with easier than usual just by tossing on some dumb mask. because a little chaos is almost as good as all the sweets they'll be hiding under their bed later.

🎶 MUSICAL NOTESㅤ—ㅤwhat type of music does your oc like? do they listen to music very often?

ㅤbyan's not terribly picky when it comes to music, to be honest. they're more in it for the vibe than the depth of the lyrics or the talent of the instrumentals. every now and then they'll find a song that hits them real deep, one they relate to and store away to listen to when they need some sort of validation or to wallow a little, but for the most part? they prefer upbeat stuff. music with energy, the kind of thing they can move to, whether they're walking or running or dancing.

they have music playing most of the day, whether they're at home (wherever that home may be at any given time), or out on the street. silence has never sat well with them, it makes their mind wander and leads to them thinking about things they don't want to be reminded of, so any time they're at home and aren't watching something, they're blasting music from their phone while they're working on something or relaxing.

🎮 VIDEO GAME CONTROLLERㅤ—ㅤwhat are three of your oc's favorite hobbies?

ㅤpickpocketing and general thievery are a hundred percent their number one hobby. it's fun, gives them a little thrill, and nine times out of ten they gain something from it — how could it not be their favourite hobby?

...honestly, most of their hobbies are illegal in nature but i'll focus on some that aren't for a little variety. as far as non-criminal activities byan likes to engage in, another favourite is designing and creating outfits. they spend a lot of time digging through thrift stores, as well as stealing clothes and accessories from more expensive places, all in the name of putting together cool and cute outfits. sometimes these happen on the fly, inspired by a single piece they find, and other times they take the time to sketch out the look they have in mind and hunt down pieces that could with the idea. they do a lot of their own alteration on clothing, too!

another favourite way of byan's to pass time is parkour and freerunning. they find a lot of freedom in being able to traverse the city in ways that don't strictly follow streets and alleys, and they love finding new shortcuts to get from point a to point b as quickly and creatively as possible. as a whole, they love being active, and they've always found parkour more useful than anything like school sports.

🍝 SPAGHETTIㅤ—ㅤwhat is/are your oc's favorite food(s)?

ㅤanswered!!ㅤbut i'll toss in another favourite: pastries. sweet and soft, cream-filled or iced, byan loves them all. they're a comfort food of sorts, and one of the few things they'll happily spend money on when they have some. it's hard to have a bad morning when you've got a doughnut with a ton of glaze on it or a deliciously sweet cream puff in your hand.

ㅤoh man oh gosh, this has me feeling some kind of way. thank you so much! it forever means so much to me that anyone enjoys not only byan, but my other characters too. while byan has definitely become my favourite child despite being the most recently created, and as such i've put a lot more time into fleshing them out over the other two, i do love my other kids too and it's really nice to hear that someone else appreciates them lmao. i've put a lot of effort into making sure they're all very different & distinct from one another, so!! i'm happy to hear that it's come through!! and i'm grateful you've stuck around for all of them because i really enjoy all of our interactions!! even if i'm oftentimes very bad at keeping up with them l-lmao...

ㅤahhhh that's so nice to hear, thank you!! i do sometimes have this really dumb concern that maybe byan is a little too much or that i push their abrasiveness or overall shittiness a little too far, so it's reassuring to hear that anyone has fun interacting with them. and, i mean, obviously it means a lot to hear that someone enjoys them as a character in general, so!! i'm glad you're having fun because i am too — especially in their dynamic with ardaka, i'm so fully invested in this mentor/protégé dynamic that it makes me look stupid

ㅤheheheh i actually have an entire verse for this exact au, in which byan majors in fashion design at a local community college. they've opted out of minoring in anything because going to college for anything is already way more school than they ever wanted to take part in — they've got zero interest in attending more classes than they absolutely have to. they're still not even sure studying fashion design is worth all the extra time in school (even if they are admittedly having fun & improving their craft).

yes, i'm SO here for this that it's ridiculous.

byan is, in every verse (but especially their space orphan verse), very directionless. having someone willing to mentor them could do them a lot of good, and having someone like ardaka take them under his wing could potentially be that much more beneficial for them. byan would be in it for the violence, of course — the idea of learning the trade of bounty hunting from one of the most well known names in the business would be something they'd have a hard time turning down. there's so much more than that which they could learn from him though, things that could potentially help them in the direction of a better path than the one they're on — things like patience, the fact that empathy & compassion aren't a weakness, etc., which they'd be more willing to listen to when it comes from someone like ardaka, someone who tries to do good without necessarily worrying about being lawful. —and someone who, honestly, i could see them looking up to a lot with a bit of time. if he has the patience to put up with them, i think they'd do pretty well under his mentorship.

@florafound sent: Initial impression: Kinda terrifying. Just generally for existing in the Undercity & we both know they can be kind of a bully. But over time that has changed. And the worst is that Kit has no WORD for how she perceives Byan. She OPENLY chooses to hang around them, openly seeks their company, openly wants to spend time in their presence even if it's simply existing in the same space like a cat. To someone looking from the outside - they're basically family. But Kit doesn't know family, so for her the closest her perception comes is to a Knight from books she's read before. The hero. Even if they're not always GOOD, it's the way she sees them that matters.

first, i want to say how much i absolutely love this and that i've been rereading it at least once a day since you sent it because it made me feel nice during otherwise not so great days.

second, lemme just cry about THEM. that concept of being family but not really realizing it because they don't know family is so perfectly them. byan at least has something family-esque in the other slumbrats & dox, but there's something a little more there with kit — she's different. they want to protect her, teach her everything she needs to know about living in the undercity, and show her that even if shit sucks down here, they can still have fun. byan won't usually hang out with another slumbrat if what they want to do is boring, but they'll happily do just about anything kit wants to because it's nice to see her smile and they actually enjoy her company a lot.

honestly, they'd do just about anything for her.

it's weird. they're not used to caring that much about someone, especially someone who can't as easily fend for themselves, and they're not used to being okay with caring so much. they're not used to wanting to make sure someone's happy. but kit's special, has been from the moment they met. kit is their sister. that's just the way it is, even if that's not the first word they'd use to label her — they'd probably call her their best friend if someone asked.
