at this point? i don’t know who is going to say i love you first. it’s really a toss up and it changes every five minutes tbh....

Who would have the other’s picture as their phone background

lowkey, i could see finn having his phone background as him and slater you know in a “best friend” sort of way. 

Who leaves notes written in fog on the bathroom mirror

you see i feel like this is something that develops with them as their friends to lover trope does too. i think that it probably started as slater writing something soooo stupid and then now it’s just something that they do. 

Who buys the other cheesy gifts

i think finn gets this one. slater buys finn gifts but they are all nicer things, nothing really cheesy whereas finn buys slater little cheesy things and will be like this reminded me of you. 

Who initiated the first kiss

this one i think was slater. they were definitely drunk so the alcohol could be blamed. however, i don’t think that finn is as bold as slater is (at least at first) so slater would be the one to kiss the other. 

Who kisses the other awake in the morning

once they finally get together? finn. he’s gotta be up and moving for school and stuff a lot earlier than slater in my mind. 

Who starts tickle fights

i’m going with finn with this one as well. as we know, slater has “reputation” and also doesn’t usually do the whole emotions thing and while finn has definitely broken down many of his walls, this one would be too soft for slater to start. 

Who asks who if they can join the other in the shower

once they are together? neither. now? also neither. they both definitely want to shower together but neither will because these idiots won’t admit anything. 

Who surprises the other in the middle of the day at work with lunch

toss up here. i think that it kinda depends on the day. more often than not, i think that it would be slater surprising finn because he’s worried about his whole addiction and just wants to check up on him to make sure that he’s not using. 

Who was nervous and shy on the first date

i think that both of them are going to be nervous but also not at all. i think that by the time they get to go on a date, they both clearly know what they want by then. 

Who kills/takes out the spiders

slater. while i don’t think that finn is scared and could do it. i just think that slater is the one to do it more often than not. 

Who loudly proclaims their love when they’re drunk

clearly both of them. this is the only way that we can get them to do anything of such sorts that is romantic (or lustful.) like these idiots walked home arm in arm from the bar and are going to drink more so they have an excuse to kiss.

The Paradox - Chapter 2

Jemma was sound asleep, comfortable and warm in her bed, her dreams for once not plagued with nightmares. The sound of an airhorn tore through the silence, violently knocking the girl from her sleep. She groaned, bleary eyed and blinking slowly, as she squinted at her phone's harshly lit screen. What do the Salvatore brothers want now I wonder? Come to the boarding house ASAP. Urgent. - SS "Bloody hell." She grumbled, clearly disgruntled about being woken before her alarm.

She sped over to the house with her school bag only to find Elena Gilbert standing outside the door. She raised her eyebrows, thinking back to the curse. She walked in the house, Elena trailing in behind her. "What was so urgent that I had to be roused at such an ungodly time? Oh - and Damon, dear friend - that means woken up." He saw (and heard) Jemma and rolled his eyes. "I know what 'roused' means Jemma. I'm not an idiot." "That is debatable." He shot his old friend a dirty look and chose to ignore her, instead focusing his attention on Elena.

"Hello Elena." "Is Stefan here? He called. He said it was important." "Right this way." He spoke quietly and let her in, being unusually quiet.

"Hey." Stefan spoke up as he walked towards her. The young girl cut him off and asked him swiftly, "what's going on?" Everyone is so serious today….” She trailed off as she spotted Rose entering the room. “You." Elena whispered as Jemma simply glared, her anger evident.

The two went into the lounge and sat on the couch beside one another, apparently in agreement about the newcomer considering how Elena eyed her wearily. "Okay, you have to understand I only know what I've picked up over the years and I don't know what's true and what's not true. It's the problem with all this vampire crap but Klaus, I know he's real." Jemma’s eyes widened a little at the mention of her old friend but she kept quiet, wanting to hear what she had to say. "Who is he?" Elena asked the question that no one wants to hear. Brave girl, if not stupid - she would do well to keep her nose out of Mikaelson business. No good comes of it. "He's one of the Originals - he's a legend." Damon answered her. Jemma pursed her lips as she avoided smiling; the irony that she, an Original, was their friend and yet they didn’t believe in them was not lost on her. Nothing’s wrong yet, wonder how long it'll take. "He's from the first generation of vampires." Stefan followed up. "Like Elijah?" "No. Elijah was the Easter bunny compared to Klaus. He's a foot soldier. Klaus is the real deal." Jemma resisted the urge to laugh at her. Eli is no foot soldier. He just happens to have more restraint. "Klaus is known to be the oldest." Stefan unhelpfully added, making her roll her eyes discreetly. Eli's older than Nik and Finn than them both. "Okay,so you're saying that the oldest vampire in the history of time is coming after me?" "Yes." "No." Rose and Stefan both reply at the same time, making her chuckle. "Actually, yes - if it really is Klaus, then he's not just coming after you, he will get you." "Sounds like you know him?" "Oh no," she quickly replied, "if he really is the oldest vampire ever created though, he'll have some major strength." "What they're saying is," Damon stood up, glaring at Rose, Jemma and Stefan, "I mean if what they're saying is true-" "It is." Rose and I cut him off. "And you're not saying it so I don't kill you-" "Which I'm not." Jemma smirked at the vampire as she repetitively cut in. Maybe she’s not so bad. "Then we're looking at a solid maybe." Jemma arched a brow. ‘Maybe’ means she's pretty much dead already. Elena swallowed hard and took a breath, naturally making Stefan attempt to come to the rescue. "Look, Elijah's dead, right? So no one else even knows you exist." Jemma squirmed silently in her seat, a part of her wanting to tell the group that Elijah was very much alive, while another part told her to keep her mouth shut because she wouldn’t be able to tell them that without exposing herself - and more importantly, her family - as Originals and that would only bring more trouble. "Not that you know of." Rose mentioned, Jemma pointing at her in agreement. "Elijah might have told someone before he got there as he knew Rose would only call him for one reason: Katerina or her döppleganger." She piped up. "That's not helping." Damon looked at the pair, once again disappointed but not surprised. "Look, I've never even met anyone who's laid eyes on him." Once again, I must resist the urge to laugh. "I mean, we're talking centuries of truth mixed with fiction. We don't know if he's real. For all we know he could just be some sort of stupid bed time story." Stefan placed his hand on Elena's shoulder, making Jemma fake-gag in the background as Rose jumped up. "He's real and he doesn't give up. If he wants something, he gets it. If you're not afraid of Klaus, then you're an idiot." Guess I’m an idiot then. "Alright, we're shaking. You made your point." Damon looked pointedly at Rose, making her smile sarcastically at him.

Elena got up without a word, shouldering her bag as Stefan watched her reach the room’s threshold. “Where are you going?” “School - we’re late.” “Let me grab my stuff, I'll go with you.” Stefan got off the sofa, walking towards her. “It's okay, I know where it is.” She left without another word, Jemma cringing on Stefan’s behalf behind him.

“She's in denial.” Damon stage-whispered to Rose, making him turn and stare daggers at him. “Shut up, Damon.” Jemma snorted at the brothers, dumping her bag on the floor as she sprawled out on the sofa. “Tell the teachers I’m sick today. I can’t be bothered going in.” She called, waving goodbye as he left the room,

The sound of voices in a nearby room woke Jemma as she stumbled over to the lounge and interrupted a tense conversation between Rose and Damon.

“Don't get on my bad side.” he growled at her, his voice low. “Then show me your good side,” she replied, not missing a beat. Jemma coughed to indicate her presence but was dismissed without a word. “How do I find Klaus?” “You don't find Klaus, he finds you.” “Come on,” he turned and paced in frustration, “somebody's got to know somebody who knows where he is, right?” He turned to the eldest vampire for backup, receiving only a shrug. “Add another two hundred somebodies to that and you're still not even close.” “Humor me. You got in touch with Elijah, how did you do it?” “Through a very low somebody on the totem pole. A guy named Slater in Richmond.” “Perfect. I'll drive.” “No. You forget not all of us can do sun.” “Then you drive. Come on.” “I’m coming with.” Jemma followed the pair.

The trio reached the underground parking lot, Rose parking the car as Jemma stretched her arms in the backseat.

“Back entrance. How convenient.” Damon remarked. “That's the point. We can't all have little daylight rings.” “You could just befriend a witch - I’m sure they’d be perfectly willing to help if you didn’t try to, oh I don’t know, break their necks.” Jemma retorted snappily. “Oh give over - you’re not even a witch anymore. And in any case, if a witch screwed me over, I’d drain them-” Rose was cut off by Jemma, her hand wrapped tightly around her throat as she bared her fangs. Damon sighed, grabbing her hand and pushing her away lightly.

“If you two are done, how do you know this Slater guy is even here?” “I called him. He's here. He's always here.” “Good.” He pushes her against the wall at super speed. “Just one thing. If you're setting me up in any way, I will rip your heart out and shove it down your throat.” He smiled, almost cheerfully at her. “It's something I'm very good at.” Rose grabbed him and pushed him against the car with ease, twisting his arm painfully behind his back. “I'm older than you and stronger. Don't get on my bad side.” She released him, looking at him with sincerity in her eyes. “You can trust me.”

They entered the coffee shop, Rose tugging off her jacket as she reached the windows. “What-” Jemma mumbled in surprise as the girl stood in the sun and didn’t burn. “Whoa. What about the sunlight?” Damon gestured in confusion at the wall length windows. “Double paned and tempered. UV rays can't penetrate. You see the appeal now?” She explained, smiling as she spotted her old friend, Slater.

“That and the free Wi-Fi.” The man joined their conversation, quickly being pulled into a hug by Rose. “Hey, how are you?” “Good. I saw you come, what are you doing here?” “Mmm, it's a long story but I want you to meet…” She gestured to her partners. “Damon Salvatore. Turned 1864 in Mystic Falls by Katherine Pierce aka Katerina Petrova. And…. someone I don’t know. I’m sorry, you are….?” “Jemma Erikson - pleasure.” He nodded, turning back to the more familiar face that was Rose. “So I take it I was right, what I told you about the tomb under the church was true?” “Yes. It was right. Thank you for the tip.”

He looks at Damon, putting a hand out. “It's nice to meet you,” Slater said, shaking the man’s hand, “maybe.”, he finished cautiously. “What's going on Rose? Where's Trevor?”

“And you're sure Elijah's dead?” “Beyond dead.” Damon nodded, the group of four heading over to Slater’s table with coffees. “Trevor was a good man; he helped me with my dissertation on sexual deviance in the Baroque period. I was schooling for my Psych PhD.” “Slater's been in college since '74.” Rose explained. “When I was turned. I have 18 degrees, 3 master's and 4 PhDs.” He said proudly. Damon looked as if he were resisting the urge to kill him which he might have been doing but nonetheless that was how he looked whenever Slater decided to open his mouth. “The point?” “Exactly, I mean, what is the point? What should I be doing with my eternity? If you have an answer, please enlighten me.” Damon looked Jemma dead in the eyes, clearly tired of the man already. “We need your help. If someone wanted to get in touch with Klaus, how would you hook him up?” “Craigslist.” He replied with an air of faux nonchalance. “Really?” Jemma questioned him. Seems a bit mundane. “Seriously. I respond to a personal ad to get sent to somebody who knows somebody who knows Elijah, who's dead and that's where my connection ends.”

Silence sat heavily at the table till Damon leaned forward and shook his head. “Here's what I don't get: Elijah moved around during the day, which means the originals knew the secret of the day ring. Now why would Klaus want to lift the curse of the sun and the moon?” “To keep the werewolves from lifting it. If a vampire breaks the sun curse then the werewolves are stuck with the curse of the moon forever and vice versa.” Slater answered. “But werewolves are extinct.” Rose replied in confusion. “True. I've never seen one but rumor has it…” He trailed off. “Well-” Jemma interjected. “Not such a rumor.” Damon finished. Slater looked between the two of them, clearly interested. “Mystic Falls?” The pair nodded. “God, I've got to visit this place. It sounds awesome.” He added, oddly awestruck. “Awesome doesn't even begin to describe it. Can we stop the curse from being broken at all?” Damon asked. “What do you mean?” “Well, if we make the moonstone useless, would it stop the curse from being broken?” “Well, yeah, probably, but why would you want to do that?” “Tell me how.” “You think I'm gonna help you figure out how to do something that will piss off an original? And keeping them from walking in the sun?” Smart boy. “You want to walk in the sun? I can make that happen if you help us.”

Damon’s attempts to bribe the man with the possibility of a daylight ring were short-lived as all of a sudden the windows came crashing in, shattered glass all around them as screams erupted from the throats of the vampires there. Jemma attempted to cover Rose with her body as Damon looked out onto the street for the perpetrator. Despite her attempts, Rose's face was burnt, her skin still burning as Damon put a jacket on Rose's face and helped her get out the back of the coffee shop, Jemma shortly following the pair after having been pushed behind the stampede of people fleeing the coffee shop. He carried Rose to the car and put her in the back, Jemma reaching them and placing a hand on Damon’s shoulder.

“You're gonna be okay.” He looked at her almost kindly, seeming to actually care. “I know.” She breathed heavily, still wincing in pain at her burns. “Who's behind that?” “I don't know. Where is Slater?” “Iowa by now. Who the hell knows?” Rose shook her head, speaking fast as she healed, her skin regaining its normal colour. “He's not behind this, he's a good guy, he wouldn't betray me.” “Then who did it?” “It's Klaus, don't you understand? You don't know this man, we're dead, we're all dead.” She sobbed, not from pain but from fear. Fear of my old friend - of my family. Maybe Edmund was right. Maybe they truly did become monsters.

Having parted ways with Rose and Damon at the Salvatore House, Jemma trudged home in silence, thinking hard at what she thought to be true. A low whistling caught her ears making her halt in the middle of the street. It was a familiar old tune that she hadn’t heard in quite some time. Her breath hitched as she looked around, trying to assess the situation. She shook her head and grumbled, ignoring the sound and filing it as a part of her imagination as she hurried home.

She unlocked the door, stepping in and scuffing her boots on the mat. “I’m home!” She called, locking the door behind her. “Family meeting, now!” She added, pulling her hair back into a ponytail as she went to the living room, flopping heavily on a beanbag. Her siblings quickly followed suit, Edmund leaning on the doorframe with crossed arms and Fran perching on the arm of a sofa.

“Where’s the fire?” Ed asked, seemingly unperturbed however his fingers tapping restlessly against his arm gave his worry away all too quickly. “Don’t freak out or anything but I think we had another run in with the Mikaelsons….?” She replied slowly, cringing a little as she waited for their outbursts about how irresponsible she was. None came. How odd. “Um, okay, well Damon, Rose and I - Rose was the vampire I told you about, the one who broke my neck - went to a coffee shop to meet a friend of hers about how to get into contact with Elijah and the rest-” “Wait, do you know how to contact him?” Fran cut her off, sitting up straight. “No - but we might have figured out a way to break the Sun and Moon Curse: all we have to do is render the moonstone useless and then the Mikaelsons won’t come to town, we won’t be exposed as Originals and there won’t be anymore annoying hunters calling for our heads - simple.” “Not simple - the Mikaelsons are killers, remember?” Edmund went over to his youngest sister, crouching down in front of her. “Look, we’ve already lost Alice to some crazy vampires and we’re not losing you too. If they don’t get what they want, they’ll tear this town apart out of spite if not necessity.” Jemma sighed, combing her fingers through her hair. “I know they’re dangerous and I know they’re not the same people they once were but I don’t trust the stories either Ed. The stories would call us monsters too simply because we’re more powerful than most vampires - those who cannot be understood are always pushed aside and portrayed as beasts and if you didn’t realise, we’re exactly like them in others’ eyes: old, powerful, secretive. We’ve all killed and while we are better than them, we are not good. But we try to redeem ourselves so what’s to say they won’t too?” “They’re not good people Jem-” “No but they were our family, we theirs and to the Mikaelsons, family is everything.” “Who’s to say they even consider us family anymore? They left us Jemima and you would do well to remember that.” “And you would do well to remember that they didn’t have a choice unless they wanted to die at the hands of their father.” Jemma and Edmund leveled their steely gazes as Fran swore from her place at the sofa.

“If you two are quite done, we should get back to the topic at hand.” She reminded her siblings, glaring at the pair of them. “Yes, well in any case, I think the Mikaelsons will be back in town at some point. They need Elena and the moonstone - both of which are right here in Mystic Falls?” “What do we do till then?” “Prepare.” Edmund answered. “How? We can’t kill them and we can’t let them kill our friends.” “We have to tell them who we are-” Jemma looked at them, her eyes imploring them to understand. “No way. We swore-” “If we don’t tell them everything, it could get them killed. We got attacked by someone at the cafe and I’m almost certain it was Elijah but I couldn’t tell them he was still alive because how would I explain to them how I know so much about the infamous Original family?” “We can’t tell them - if we do, they won’t trust a word we say. We’ve known the Salvatores for a hundred years and we didn’t tell the truth; how d’you think they’ll react to their friends having lied to them for all their lives? who’s more into cars?  not so much cars but with vehicles in general my guess would be slater? finn has no interest in cars except to get from point a to point b but i feel like slater might actually have an interest in how he travels around.  who’s traveled more?  potentially finn. his family were very much in the circle of adults showing off with “look where we went on holiday” while he was growing up so he went to some interesting places even if he’d much rather be able to go back to them all now with slater. who swears more often?  definitely slater. he is cool enough to swear whereas finn has always been very polite in most situations, the one exception being when they're lowkey arguing apparently in which case it becomes slightly more even but even then slater still wins. who believes in ghosts?  i want to say neither? i may be misjudging slater but I feel like they're both almost too practical to believe in most of the supernatural. who would plant a garden in the backyard?  i feel like finn. he'd be the one who would get rather into them having a little garden if they ever had a place together and just likes proving that they can keep something alive so he can talk slater into getting a pet. who would paint the walls in the living room an obnoxious color without asking the other?  truly i do not think either of them would care enough to? like I don't think either really even has the time, their walls would just stay the same colour in some shade of grey lmao. who owns more shoes?  slater? i feel like he has more money and the opportunity to buy nice shoes and trainers while finn just alternates between two different pairs. who takes up most of the counter space in the bathroom?  probably finn, he pretends not to care but has a surprising number of hair products and just a lot of stuff like an excessive number of contact lenses or first aid kit. he doesn't want to be unprepared with anything they might need. who’s the big spoon?   they definitely take it in turns depending who has had a rough day and deserves to just be held onto for a little while. who has the kinkier fetish? (bonus points: what is the fetish?)  this almost has to be slater. he has kinkier energy somehow whereas finn is kinda blissfully ignorant of most fetishes he's just there for a good time with someone he cares about lmao. also they both give me top vibes? I'm not sure about slater but finn would normally top 99% of the time but also like he trusts slater so completely he would genuinely just do anything he wanted like he is definitely the exception. who forces the other to recycle?  probably finn, he's very aware of the disaster the planet is in and is a big believer in them doing their small part to try and make that better. who always leaves their dishes in the sink? who ends up cleaning them?  finn is lowkey a cleaner like he grew up in a home where he couldn't make a mess and that's kind of stuck with him plus it just makes him feel in control of life so slater wouldn't even get chance to let dishes pile up finn would either ask him to do them or more likely just do them himself. who would be more likely to cook the other a romantic surprise meal?  i actually do think both, like I could imagine slater doing so for finn when he's actually doing his training in the wards and has ridiculously long days and finn definitely does for slater as a way to show how much he appreciates him and just to have cute romantic nights together. plus I truly reckon he would have already done this for them several times even as friends. who’s more likely to come home with a romantic gift just because?  I feel like slater because he seems like if he was out and saw something that made him think of finn he'd just buy it. plus he's more of a show how you feel then say it sorta person and that's always a cute way to do so. who’s parents are more controlling?  technically finn but given he no longer speaks to them and slater works with his from day to day it's more so slater. who was more popular in high school?  I want to say finn. I feel like slater was probably a sort of bad boy in school while finn was golden boy jock while it was much easier to just blend in with the popular crowd and play football. you bet if they'd been in the same place still-pretending-to-be-straight finn would have been lowkey staring at slater for far too long any time he walked by though even thought they probably would have never spoken. who is more frugal?  again probably finn just because he's a student and a big believer in budgeting whereas slater actually has a fair bit of money.

M4M&I — Day 7 : Betty & Veronica

So maybe the most entertaining part of MMI is the fact I get to play “Six Degrees of Me” when I start writing an entry. And it turns out that Betty & Veronica is really a subject that leads in all sorts of strange directions before I get to the topic that I originally wanted to write about (or at least the one that it prompted in my mind when I came to write about it).

First I should explain how I come up with the topics, because it sounds like I come up with a topic, then find a title for the entry to segue into the topic — and that isn’t true.

The first year, the redoubtable Miss Fletcher provided the words, and the second year I put the words from the first year in a list, then just randomly cut and pasted them into a new order with a note of what I had written about the year before (so I wouldn’t duplicate myself).

For the third year I asked my most beloved to provide some words from June through to the following April, which she very kindly did (she is very nice like that, and yeah I know how patronising that sounds — shut up) and this year I just picked random words through the year as I was watching TV, films or listening to music.

Now for those of you who have seen the film, it will not come as a surprise that Betty & Veronica came from “Heathers” — a truly amazing film staring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater that is one of my favourite films for reasons I am not entirely sure of (but that I can probably explain later).

However despite growing up in the UK and not being all that familiar with American comics, I am aware that the “original” characters of Betty and Veronica (at least the ones that most people know) did not originate at Westerburg High — at least not the Westerburg High that JD and Heather visit their righteous justice upon.

They are from a comic called Archie that is a great deal older than I am. I don’t know the exact ins and outs — never read them and have no plans to — but that’s where the original Betty and Veronica come from.

I do know that some of the characters from Archie possibly gave birth to the world of Sabrina (“The Chilling Adventures” makes reference to Greendale and sometimes to Riverdale I think) and to Riverdale) but again — I cannot give you the ins and outs of all that because, quite honestly, I don’t really care all that much. The Chilling Adventures was suitably entertaining without needing to know the backstory, and I’ve never watched Riverdale because…… well I don’t know why — I guess it never appealed to me.

However the first time I remember hearing the phrase “Betty & Veronica” was not in “Heathers”

I guess I should explain, because I already said that’s where it came from, and no doubt you are all wondering if I have lost my mind. (I haven’t).

Back when I was in university, a friend of mine lent me a book called “Microserfs” by a guy called Douglas Copeland. It was very good and very well written. So when I found a second book — jPod — I was suitably interested and it was equally entertaining, if a little confusing in places.

But then my most beloved found they’d made a series of it, and pointed me towards the first two episodes. (I told you she is very nice like that). And they were fantastic. Because within the first half hour, Ethan (the start) was helping his mother bury the body of a drug dealer she had killed.

After that, I watched the next eleven episodes, and it was in Episode 10 that Bree talks to Ethan about the two women he likes (Kaitlyn and Sarah) and she says you have the classic “Betty & Veronica” problem.

Which is where I first heard the two names paired together like that. (In Heathers Betty Finn and Veronica Sawyer are friends, but no one wants to date both of them or decide between them, so they are not “Betty & Veronica”)

I realise I have taken quite a while to get here, but like I said this is part of the fun of “May” — wandering around the inner depths of my brain, making the odd connections that link all sorts of things that you would not think possible to connect

Because despite all of this, I haven’t actually got started on where I was going — which is dark humour.

I remember watching one episode of jPod in the office at work (I was on my lunch, and this was back when I actually went into the office to work — just to give you an idea of how long ago it was) and laughing a lot to myself, then having to explain to someone who was walking past why I was laughing to myself and realising it was kind of hard.

Because basically Kaitlyn was trying to talk to Ethan about whether or not she should take a promotion that would a) make her his boss within the pod and b) by extension would prevent them from dating (because bosses aren’t permitted to date the people they are overseeing) and she is upset that he doesn’t seem to be paying attention to her.

However the reason he is not paying attention to her is that half an hour earlier he learned that his mother accidentally ran over their former boss, then found him dead in their driveway. And now the dead body of their former boss is behind the sofa that he and Kaitlyn are sat on, and he has to find a way to a) dispose of the body and b) try to make it look like their former boss died from a drug overdose instead of being run over by his mother.

So clearly Ethan has other things on his mind.

This, to me, was hilarious.

And was a very good example of very well written dark humour — and of all the examples of humour (farce, word play, slapstick, stand up and so on) I think that well executed dark humour has to be my favourite because it threads a very, very fine needle.

You have to make sure it is funny, and that it is very dark (trying to find a place to bury a dead body, discussing the problems of taking a promotion while hiding a dead body behind a sofa) but that it offsets it with day to day problems (while they are trying to find a place to bury the body they are discussing the fact that it is very hard to find a place to bury a body, but that’s probably a good thing because if it was easy the human race would have died out years ago).

If you make it too dark then it ceases to be funny, and if you don’t inject a bit of light into it, then it ceases to be funny. But if you try too hard to make it be funny then it ceases to be dark and just becomes sad.

jPod — the writers of the series, along with Douglas Copeland — did this very, very well.

There was also a series called Tales of The Unexpected that did this pretty well, back when I was a child. Some of them were not supposed to be humour (the episode with the old woman and the two children was not funny and just creepy) but the one on the boat with the woman and her husband was — whether it intended to be or not — incredibly funny.

Everyone needs some dark humour in their life. And I have definitely embraced it — along with sarcasm, satire and saying the wrong thing at the wrong time.

The Bar and Braun Strowman

I think I’d rather this not be a match at all anymore. WWE obviously didn’t have plans for the Raw tag titles, and it should’ve stayed that way. The Mania card is already super stacked and I think everyone would be fine if this wasn’t a match. 

Braun claims he has a partner and will face Cesaro in a match next. It’s obviously Braun in a costume, and Corey Graves is selling this so goddamn well it’s hilarious.

The Bar is now just attacking Braun, but of course Braun overpowered them and threw them off. Who’s going to be Braun’s partner at Mania? 

Matt Hardy vs. Goldust

Matt Hardy is back on Raw after that glorious yet bizarre ultimate deletion match a couple weeks back against Bray Wyatt. If you haven’t seen that yet, please god go watch it. 

This seems like a weird and random matchup, but both of these men will be participating in the Andre the Giant Battle Royal on Sunday, so I guess that’s why?

These guys are both talented veterans, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen them in a match together? 

Matt Hardy picks up the win against Goldust. There wasn’t much to say about this match because it was pretty short, but seeing these two lockup was a fresh change!

John Cena

It’s time for Cena to make his weekly old jokes and complaints about the Undertaker not responding to his challenge. Week after week since Fastlane, Cena has been calling out the deadman to face him at Mania this year. This is legitimately a match I’m interested in. I’m not a Cena fan of course, but seeing Cena and Taker at Mania would be amazing. They’d put on a great show, and every fan knows that. 

Cena’s promos have been a little hokey and fake for this. The obnoxious ways he tries to hype the crowd and then bringing them down is okay, but it just got way too humorous for me. If you want to call someone out John, just call them out! John’s way of calling someone out is through shading them and calling them names, which is funny, but it’s too much! That’s John’s character, fine! But John, just DO SOMETHING

I’ve been theorizing that John will come down to the ring and just wait for Taker or something on Sunday. I wish it would just be confirmed already.

I get that John is really trying to have a Mania match, and honestly it is better that he hype this match all by himself. I still think there’s a big chance that Taker will show up on Sunday, but only time will tell.

Elias vs. Heath Slater

You know what? It is always a treat to see Heath. I always see Heath when I go to a live show. He’s honestly a really great performer and I think he’s a really underrated wrestler.

Of course Elias opened with a song for the crowd tonight. He tried to sing a song about how bad the town of Atlanta is, but everyone was too busy cheering for him. He’s so over right now it is ridiculous.

The match really did not last long. This was obviously a time killer, which is okay? They’ve got to keep the focus on Mania, and I don’t think this match did that.

Nia Jax

I didn’t know if I was going to include this or not, but I love Nia Jax so much. She does not give a shit like she said, and that is the best thing ever. Nia is one of the women who is really inspiring to a lot of girls who think they’re too different to do “normal” things. She’s a voice that not only the women’s division needs, but also one that the WWE should use more. I stand by Nia all the way, and I’m glad she had the interview segment to say what she did. I hope she and Alexa put on a good match on Sunday. I’m looking forward to seeing Nia win.

Dana Brooke/Asuka vs. Alexa Bliss/Mickie James

I’m slightly confused why this is a match? Pairing Dana with Asuka seems different, but they want to put Asuka on Raw one last time before she wins on Sunday against Charlotte for the Smackdown Women’s title. We all know Asuka will win on Sunday for sure. There’s no way that Asuka is losing her streak yet, and with the win, she’ll be moving to Smackdown, where I personally think she’ll do better and have some fun competition. 

This is also cool for Dana to actually be in a match again! 

Alexa and Mickie have been in control for most of the match. Dana has not been able to tag in Asuka at all during this match. Mickie and Alexa have been all over Dana, which worked for most of the match. Dana eventually got the tag to Asuka, and Asuka is now just destroying Mickie with kicks and strikes to her whole body. Mickie tries to fight with everything she has left, but Asuka makes her submit, giving her and Dana the victory. Alexa and Mickie began attacking Asuka, but Nia came down to the ring and beat the shit out of Mickie. 

Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar

I can see how this is going to go. They’ll talk for a little bit and then it’ll end in a huge brawl. I wish this wasn’t closing the show, but it definitely panders to those who want to see this match. We all know Roman is going to win on Sunday, but the WWE will juice this as long as they can. 

Brock came to the ring first, and I think this is the first time I’ve ever heard a crowd boo him. Crowds are usually so excited to see him and they freak out, but not this time? 

I do love Paul Heyman just talking about nothing. I love hearing him not mess up what he has to say. It makes the show seem real, I think. He makes it seem like no one writes lines for this guys, no one plans out the segments, it’s just Monday Night Raw. I really appreciate Paul for always weaving a story for us. 

Oh, wait, did Paul just confirm that Brock is leaving Raw after Mania? He’s going back to UFC?

Roman has not made his way out to the ring, and a bunch of superstars stand in his way. They all let him through, and now Roman is probably going to beat up Brock.

Let’s go Roman chants are filling the arena right now. I think everyone is behind Roman at this point for the match on Sunday.

Reigns went on to Superman punch Lesnar five times, just like Lesnar does with the F-5, and Roman stood tall. We all thought Lesnar was down, but he snuck up on Roman and hit him with the F-5, and is now walking out of the arena with the title on his shoulder. Is Roman strong enough to beat Brock? ...yea, he’s gonna win guys...

That’s it for the Raw before Mania! I thought the first half of the show was better than the second, it was much more exciting for sure, but all around it was a good show. I’m excited for Mania this Sunday, and I can’t wait to see what else happens this week.

I’m really going to try to post for Smackdown tomorrow, but I don’t want to promise anything just yet. Hopefully, I’ll make more posts this week, so be on the lookout for those posts! Thanks!

So, WWE Universe! What got you excited this week?

Was it the return of Goldberg, LIVE and in person on Friday Night SmackDown? Or maybe it was the Bella Twins getting the nod into the WWE Hall of Fame? Was it Randy Orton’s thorough thrashing of Matt Hardy? The return to the ring of The Velveteen Dream and that sweet entrance! Or maybe, it was the continued heartbreak of the Mandy-Otis coupling.

I don’t know about you, but outside of Orton, all of that played second fiddle.

Hands down, the best show of the week goes to the folks from Full Sail! NXT TakeOver: Portland dominated the WWE airwaves on the WWE Network. Champions stood tall, new tag team champs crowned on a night that looked like The Undisputed Era looked to lose all the gold, only to see Johnny Gargano turn on his friend and former foe, Tommaso Ciampa moments before he was going to get his NXT Championship back.

Across the board from in-ring to furthering storylines to crowd excitement, NXT led the way. And that’s the way it’s been lately. RAW’s been better in the past few weeks, but SmackDown has really lacked that “it” factor. That surprises me that the level of “WOW” just hasn’t been there for the blue brand, especially considering how much FOX is spending for it. That 2.4 million viewers a week is a nice, safe number, but FOX at some point will ask why the needle hasn’t moved much. Plus, just watching the show, you can see that it’s lacking the drama and needed creativity.

Simply put, imagine how much different the Road to WrestleMania would look, especially for the women if not for NXT! We wouldn’t have Rhea Ripley vs. Charlotte Flair. We wouldn’t have Shayna Baszler (ahem, possibly) against Becky Lynch. Two of the hottest stories across the brands!

With Super Showdown this Thursday in Saudi Arabia, expect things to get much clearer on the Road to WrestleMania. After all, remember, we do get the return of John Cena as well Friday night in Boston on SmackDown. Then, it’s Elimination Chamber just over one week later on March 8th.

Star of the Week:

It’s not a person or particular person this week. It’s a match. The Symphony of Destruction Match between Braun Strowman/Elias vs. Shinsuke Nakamura/Cesaro. In just its second edition, this match was fun, physical, entertaining and all four, plus Sami Zayn, really had me invested! Unfortunately, that piano didn’t cooperate. Damn, those backs must have felt that one! Well done guys!

This one just didn’t have that “it” factor either this week. The show seemed off all night. Nothing really stuck out other than Randy Orton’s deletion of Matt Hardy. This is the Road to WrestleMania and the WWE needs to start treating that way with must-see shows EVERY week. This one seemed like a take-off week instead after some very good shows.

What we loved:

Red-hot RKO – The hottest heel on the planet continues to be one Randy Orton. We thought The Viper put Matt Hardy to pasture last week, but that attack was nothing compared to a pair of conchairto shots in and out of the ring this week. Scary to think that at one point, Orton had the crowd cheering him to give Hardy one more shot. You have to wonder what Orton has in store next.

Substance to The Street Profits – It’s good to see the WWE finally using The Street Profits for more than just comedic fodder. Their infusion into the main even match with Seth Rollins and his Monday Night Messiah Minions gives the storyline some freshness.

No squash here – How about that! Instead of a pair of squashes for Aleister Black and Erik Rowan, we get a physical match between the two. Plus, Black gets elevated into what looks to be a mid-card match WrestleMania. Nice step up for Mr. Black.

Hey Lucy, you got some ‘splanin to do:

Hard-ly any help – It always bothers me when there will be a flurry of help from the locker room for some random disturbance in the ring, yet when there’s a vicious attack on a fan favorite, like this week on Matt Hardy, absolutely no one comes out to help! Why is that? Does Matt Hardy have no friends after more than two decades in the company? He was out there getting his ass and neck killed for almost ten minutes. Makes no sense. Even Humberto Carrillo has gotten help at one point.

Becky vs. Shayna – Why exactly is Becky Lynch shelling out money for what she’ll do to Shayna Baszler? Why is Baszler’s s-bomb not bleeped and is she getting the non-PG treatment on purpose? Is it me, or is the Elimination Chamber just a mere formality?

What we didn’t love:

24/7 – It seems we’ve lost some creative and fun to the once beloved 24/7 title. The past few weeks, it’s just turned into another throwaway match. I need it to return to the wild, crazy, out of the ring, defended everywhere mayhem it was the first few months.

Coming out what so far could be the show of the year at TakeOver: Portland, NXT delivers another solid, but lacking big moments show. A pair of champions, Keith Lee and The BroserWeights, looked strong while The Velveteen Dream steals the show, dealing another nightmarish ending to TUE with a clean win over Roderick Strong. I am VERY curious to see where Bianca Belair will land after calling out Charlotte Flair again. Belair, despite the loss at TakeOver: Portland, remains a rockstar with a tremendous upside.

The Dream Delights – Great to see TVD back in the ring in the main event. Match of the night between the Dream and Roderick Strong delivers on what it promised. Plus, an expected beatdown keeps the feud going.

Ciampa’s challenge – Not only did Tommaso Ciampa challenge former partner and nemesis Johnny Gargano’s spot in NXT, but also set up a battle next week vs. Austin Theory. Ciampa’s chomping at the bit to not only get Gargano, but another shot at Goldie and the NXT Championship.

Celebrate the cruiserweights – Jordan Devlin and Lio Rush got out Wednesday night off to a hot start with a thrilling title match start. Rush has really changed my mind on him with his latest run in NXT. Devlin has definitely taken the baton and kept the cruiserweight championship at an elevated state.

What we didn’t love:

Home not-so-sweet Home – After a capacity crowd in Portland, Oregon Sunday night at TakeOver: Portland, it was a bit of a letdown to go back to Full Sail Wednesday night. I’ll say it once and I’ll say it every week until it changes, NXT has to go big or stay home (and stay safe). Staying safe isn’t going to cut it against All Elite Wrestling, who continues to bang it out in bigtime arenas on a week-in, week-out basis.

Always quality stuff from these 8 men in the ring! Plus, always a little tease for a fight down the road if a turn’s needed.

Standing O for Symphony – LOVED all the musical destruction between Elias, Braun Strowman, Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura. Tag teams are ruling the night and count me as one if they wanted to push Elias and Strowman as future tag champs. Good chemistry and the crowd loves both of them at the moment.

Goldberg spears The Fiend….and that’s it – I get that you have to put some kind of notion that Goldberg could actually beat Bray Wyatt/The Fiend at Super Showdown. But, it was oh so predictable in how it was laid out, complete with Goldberg telling us how it would happen. There’s ZERO chance The Fiend loses at Super Showdown on the Road to WrestleMania.

Meh:

Naomi vs. Carmella – Flat and clunky at times. Don’t get me wrong, it was fine, but for a main event, I need to be wowed. If not, it’s just there. Kind of like this whole episode of SmackDown. It was just there.

Bryan vs. Slater II – Why?

Congrats to the Bella Twins as the newest announced inductees to the WWE Hall of Fame!

How about the latest rumor – WWE in talks with ESPN to show their PPV’s on the ESPN+ streaming service. Could be a big blow to the WWE Network, but worth guaranteed money for the WWE and more mainstream publicity from ESPN. Something to watch as this one could develop quickly – BEFORE WrestleMania.

Band Name:  Electrocandescence

Genre:  Electronic Rock

Origin:  Los Angeles, California, U.S.

Year Formed/Status:  Officially formed in June 2015. A major record label reached out to them after 7 months to sign a deal after one of their agents noticed the band’s increasing popularity in the LA area. They quickly shot to fame nationwide within the next year after getting signed, and now, about two and a half years after that, are internationally popular and do worldwide tours.

Members:  Josh Meyer - Lead Singer/Leader;  Kai Slater - Electric Guitar/Backing Vocals;  Roland Beck - Synth;  Oli Jones - Bass/Backing Vocals;  and Finn O’Donnell - Drums

Additional Information:  All the members work together as well as individually to write their own songs.

Josh Meyer

-Full Name:  Joshua Alexander Meyer

-Birthday/Age:  February 3rd, 1994. Age is 25 at the start of this story.

-Hometown:  Born and raised in Los Angeles, California.

-Race & Family Heritage:  White. Mix of Scandinavian, mostly Danish, on his mother’s side. Mix of Western European, mostly Dutch, on his father’s side.

-Parents:  Kirsten Meyer - Mother;  Isaac Meyer - Father

-Siblings:  Elise Meyer - Younger Sister by 5 years;  Levi Meyer - Younger Brother by 8 years

-Pets:  A female 7-month-old blue merle Australian shepherd dog named Pepper. His family had multiple dogs as he grew up, currently owning a male 7-year-old boxer named Max and a female 3-year-old dachshund named Roxy, so he knew he wanted a dog when he got his own place. He got her from his parents’ neighbors’ dog’s litter of puppies, and since they’re an active breed that loves exercising, he likes to take her on runs around his neighborhood. 

-Physical Description:  

Hair:  Medium-short, about mid-ear in length, semi-wavy, dirty blond. Tends to slightly hang in eyes.

Skin tone:  Neutral, fair

Tattoos:  A small Enso, an imperfect circle, on his inner right forearm closer to his inner elbow. It symbolizes his desire to remind himself that there is perfection in imperfection, to try to be happy with what is and not constantly try to improve upon what has been.

-Personality: Responsible, caring, friendly, hard-working, perfectionist, mostly extroverted with some introverted tendencies (loves to be around others, but occasionally needs his alone time to “recharge”)

Good Traits/Habits:  You can always depend on him to get the job done, and get it done well. He will usually take charge of a situation and make sure everyone involved is being taken care of and has what they need. He is an older brother to two siblings quite a few years younger than him, so always felt responsible for looking out for them and being a good role model for them, and that mindset has followed him in his life. He’s also fun to hang out with too, as he’s quite friendly and charismatic and can keep the conversation going, as well as usually coming up with the best plans when hanging out with friends, making sure everyone’s having a good time. 

Bad Traits/Habits:  Since he’s a perfectionist, he can often work himself into the ground doing and redoing something until he thinks it’s perfect. When he does this, his band mates and friends often have to step in and remind him that nothing can be perfect, and take him away from what he’s working on to take a break and get his head back on straight. Also, sometimes it can be hard for him to step back, let go of the reins, and let people, especially those he feels responsible for, take control of situations to let them make and learn from their own mistakes. Some people might label him as a control freak or a “mother hen,” but he just feels that if he could help them make better decisions then it’s his responsibility to help them out, even when most people don’t appreciate that much meddling into their personal affairs.

-How He Decided Which to Play:  Loved to sing as a child. Wanted to learn how to play the acoustic guitar in middle school, so his parents took him to guitar lessons where he would like to sing as he played. He eventually realized he loved singing more, so now he just uses the acoustic guitar to help him write music for the band.

-Nickname/Joke Name the Group Calls Him:  The “older brother” of the group, sometimes jokingly referred to as the “mom” of the group 

-What Type of Drunk He Is:  He doesn’t like to get too drunk too often, since he likes to keep track of his friends that he came to the bar/club with to make sure they’re okay throughout the night, but when he does get drunk, he turns into a bossy drunk, telling people what to do and getting increasingly upset when they don’t listen. 

-Goals/Motivation:  Just like the rest of the guys, his more immediate goal is for the band to continue to be successful worldwide. His motivation for that is being able to pour his heart and soul into creating and performing music that the fans love just as much as he does. His more long-term goal is finding a girl to settle down and start a family with someday. His motivation for that is from seeing how happy his parents were growing up; he wants that for himself one day.

-Fears:  One time when his siblings were very little (he was 11, his sister was 6, and his brother was 3), he was watching his siblings while they were all playing out in the front yard and got distracted. In the few minutes he wasn’t paying attention to where his brother was, his brother managed to wander out into the street and very nearly got hit by a car. Ever since then, he fears losing control of a situation and something bad happening to someone he cares for or feels responsible for. To try to compensate for this, he always makes sure to plan out activities ahead of time and tries to keep track of everyone during the activity so he can reassure himself that they’re okay.

-Nervous Habit:  Whenever he’s nervous or worried, he can’t sit still. He’ll constantly be shaking/bouncing his leg when he’s sitting down, or pacing around when he’s standing.

-Best Friend/Which Member He Turns to When He Needs Someone:  Kai Slater. They’ve known each other and been best friends since they were 8 years old, and he knows Kai will always be there to set him back on the right path when he gets too lost in his own head or cheer him up when he needs it.

-Additional Fact:  He knows how to surf, and likes to visit the various LA beaches to catch some waves when he has the time. His dad was actually the one to teach him how to surf, always making time to take the family out to the beach when he was growing up. 

-Random Trivia: 

His favorite color is blue; he also likes orange.

He is right-handed. 

He is slightly more of a heavy sleeper than a light sleeper, but is mostly average. Most sounds outside or around the house will usually not wake him up, but louder noises will, especially those inside the bedroom.

His preferred sleeping position is on his side, with the arm he is laying on tucked up underneath the pillow to support his head.

Kai Slater

-Full Name:  Kai Hiroki Slater

-Birthday/Age:  April 19th, 1994. Age is 25 at the start of this story.

-Hometown:  Born in Sacramento, California. Family moved to Los Angeles when he was 3 years old.

-Race & Family Heritage:  Half Japanese on his mother’s side, half white on his father’s side. His white ancestry is mostly Western European, with the greatest majority being German.

-Parents:  Kimiko Slater - Mother;  Henry Slater - Father

-Siblings:  Naoki Slater - Older brother by 3 years

-Pets:  A male 5-month-old tricolor beagle dog named Cooper. He grew up with dogs and knew he wanted to own one when he got his own place. His parents had a male Shiba Inu named Koji that died when he was in middle school, and they now own a male 5-year-old French bulldog named Kenji.

Good Traits/Habits:  He always has energy and confidence in all the things he does. His energetic personality is often contagious, making those around him have more energy as well, and as a result people often comment how much fun it is to work with or hang out with him. His bold ideas often help push the band in greater directions, where others might have held back out of lack of confidence or fear of failure. Also, he’s incredibly fun to party with. There’s never time for a party to get dull with him around, he’ll hype it up with his boundless energy and fun ideas. He loves meeting new people and making new friends, and they will often find there’s never a lack of things to talk about with him around. 

Bad Traits/Habits:  Occasionally he can be a little too bold, rubbing people the wrong way. He sometimes doesn’t know when to give up or let things go, thinking that if he just keeps pushing people, he can get what he wants. He is also often too loud, sometimes at inappropriate times. When he gets this way, his band mates and his friends often have to tell him to calm down and be quiet. Also, his boundless energy can occasionally be annoying when sometimes all his band mates or friends want to do is chill and relax, but he constantly wants to go out and do something fun. He also parties a little too much sometimes, and often drinks too much at those parties.

-How He Decided Which to Play:  Became interested in guitars in middle school, so his parents took him to guitar lessons where he learned how to play the acoustic. As a teen, he started to dabble in learning both bass and electric guitar, until he decided he liked electric guitars more.

-Nickname/Joke Name the Group Calls Him:  The “life of the party” of the group, sometimes jokingly referred to as the “party animal”

-What Type of Drunk He Is:  He likes to party and go out with friends to bars/clubs a lot and gets drunk at a good deal of them. He turns into an obnoxious and reckless drunk, being very loud and often doing stupid stunts to try to get attention or for the rush. 

-Goals/Motivation:  Just like the rest of the guys, his more immediate goal is for the band to continue to be successful worldwide. His motivation for that is how incredibly amazing their live performances are in big stadiums around the world. The fans screaming, the lights blaring, and the music blasting make for an exceptionally exhilarating experience. His more long-term goal is to find a girl that can keep up with him and that he can enjoy life with. His motivation for that is seeing how compatible and happy his older brother and his new wife are together; he wants to find someone just as compatible with him so they can live just as happily together.

-Fears:  He has a fear of missing out, fearing that if he doesn’t always “go for it” or make himself available, he’ll miss out on something fun or important, making him sometimes jump into things without thinking them through more thoroughly. He also has a big fear of snakes. Once when he was 7, he almost got bit by a rattlesnake while playing in his backyard. Ever since then, he tends to freak out whenever he sees one. 

-Nervous Habit:  He can get very impatient when nervous or worried, tending to complain a lot to whoever’s with him.

-Best Friend/Which Member He Turns to When He Needs Someone:  Josh Meyer. They’ve known each other and been best friends since they were 8 years old, and he knows Josh will always have his back or lend a listening ear when he needs it. 

-Additional Fact:  He’s really good at cooking, having learned it from his mother who is a chef at a local fine dining restaurant. The boys often make him cook for all of them whenever they have to cook for themselves while on tour. 

-Random Trivia: 

His favorite color is red; he also likes blue. He prefers the brighter/bolder shades of colors.

He is right-handed.

He is a very heavy sleeper, and will sleep through most sounds, even loud ones. He sometimes even sleeps through his own alarms, making someone have to come physically wake him up when he has somewhere he needs to be. For example, while the guys are on tour, one of them always texts him when they wake up to make sure he's up, and if he doesn't reply, they know that they have to go physically wake him up so that he doesn't make them late.

His preferred sleeping position is on his back in a starfish formation, with his limbs splayed out in various directions.

Roland Beck

-Full Name:  Roland Milo Beck

-Birthday/Age:  June 24th, 1995. Age is 24 at the start of this story.

-Hometown:  Born in Seattle, Washington to a single mother. When he was 8 years old, his mother married his step father and moved to Los Angeles.

-Race & Family Heritage:  White. Mix between Western and Eastern European ancestry, mostly split between German, French, Russian, and Polish.

-Parents:  Savannah Beck-Richards - Mother;  Tim Richards - Step-Father;  Biological Father is unknown

-Siblings:  Alexis Richards - Younger Half-Sister by 15 years

-Pets:  A female 1-year-old blue lynx mitted ragdoll cat named Evie. He had missed having a cat around the house when he moved into his own place, as his family has a female 6-year-old blue lynx mitted ragdoll cat named Lacey that they bought for his little half-sister’s 3rd birthday. So when Lacey had kittens, they gave him one to live with him after he got his own place.

-Physical Description:  

Hair:  Medium-long, about midway between his ears and chin in length, mostly straight, black. Has it in a side part.

Eyes:  Ash Gray

Skin tone:  Pale, cool 

Build:  Lean, slightly toned

Style:  Prefers black paired with some darker and muted colors; slightly detailed and more fitted clothes

Tattoos:  An upper quarter sleeve tattoo on his right arm of a dragon ouroboros, symbolizing his desire for self-sufficiency and renewal 

-Personality:  Stoic, quiet, sensitive, independent, fiercely protective of those he’s close to, tries to put up a strong front publicly but is softer to those who know him, very introverted (likes a lot of alone time; still likes to hang out with friends, he just needs a lot more time alone to “recharge”)

Good Traits/Habits:  He cares deeply for those close to him that have made it past the walls he’s put up. His emotions run deep, and he finds himself more easily empathetic to others’ problems. He is a great listener, always willing to lend a sympathetic ear to a friend in need, and will always try to offer whatever advice he can and help them fix the problem if possible. Those in his close-knit friend group know they can always depend on him to be there for them when they need him, and that he will always fiercely defend them if it comes down to it, as he doesn’t want to lose anyone close to him. So while he mostly shows his strong, independent side to the public, those close to him also know of his softer, more sympathetic side, especially those who have seen how protective and sweet he is with his much younger little half-sister. 

Bad Traits/Habits:  He has a hard time opening up to new people, and so can often seem cold or unapproachable to those who don’t know him. He spent a lot of his time alone as a child, so he had to be pretty self-reliant at an early age, since he was raised by a single mother until he was 8 and he never knew his father. His mom would often have to leave him alone so she could work long hours to be able to support the two of them, so he often didn’t have anyone to talk to or confide in growing up. Due to that, he still has a hard time showing his emotions to those who aren’t close to him, preferring to put up a strong front in public and keep his feelings to himself since he’s not used to sharing things that deep with other people and doesn’t want to appear weak. While more open now then he used to be, his band mates and friends still sometimes have to remind him that he can confide in them if he needs to when they can tell he has a problem that’s weighing him down. Also, as a very introverted person, he tends to not want to hang out and go to events nearly as much as his band mates and other friends do, so they often find themselves having to drag him out of his house to go to more parties and events.

-Additional Instruments He’s Able to Play:  Classical Piano, Keyboard

-How He Decided Which to Play:  His step-father is a classical piano teacher, so he took him to lessons with him as a way to bond when he first married his mother. He realized he liked it and became quite good, until he decided in high school that he wanted to play more modern music instead of classical, so he learned and switched to the keyboard. Then, in his senior year he went to a concert that had a synth player and was fascinated. Since the synth had a keyboard attached, he figured he could use his skills on the keyboard to help him start learning it, where he then realized he loved it.

-Nickname/Joke Name the Group Calls Him:  The “quiet one” of the group, sometimes jokingly referred to as an “edgelord”

-What Type of Drunk He Is:  He has a pretty high tolerance, but doesn’t like to go out and drink to excess that often. When he does get drunk, he turns into a philosophical drunk, trying to talk about serious and deep issues like the meaning of life and the universe with anyone nearby that he knows. 

-Goals/Motivation:  Just like the rest of the guys, his more immediate goal is for the band to continue to be successful worldwide. His motivation for that is creating meaningful music that can help his fans get through difficult times. He knows some of his favorite bands helped get him through some dark times growing up, and if he can do that for someone else, he’ll keep doing all he can to be able to continue to perform meaningful music with the band. His more long-term goal is finding a girl that he can trust and form a deep connection with. His motivation for that is from seeing how hard life was on his single mother, and how much happier she was after marrying his step-father. He wants to find someone he can trust so that what happened to his mother during his early childhood doesn’t happen to him, and so that he can be as happy as his mother now is, now that she’s found someone to love and trust. 

-Fears:  He has a fear of abandonment, fearing those close to him will become tired of him or feel burdened by him and leave him behind. This stemmed from his childhood spent alone watching his single mother work herself to the bone to take care of both of them, making him feel like a burden. When his mother married his step-father, he feared she would forget about him and want to focus on starting her new happy life with her husband, leaving him as part of an unwanted past. After his mother noticed his fears, she tried to reassure him that wasn’t the case and made sure he felt loved, which helped him get over most of his fear, but deep down he still fears that it’ll happen again with someone else he’s close to. 

-Nervous Habit:  He gets irritable and angry when nervous or worried. He’ll snap at people more, and his replies will get more curt and short. He’ll also run his hands through his hair a lot. 

-Best Friend/Which Member He Turns to When He Needs Someone:  Oli Jones. He knows Oli will always be ready to listen without judgment or pretense when he needs it, and will always do whatever he can to help. 

-Additional Fact:  He has a grand piano in his house that he likes to play to relax or when he has down time. He also owns and knows how to ride a motorcycle, and likes to ride around to relax or when he needs to get away to have time alone.

His favorite color is black, but blue is a close second.

He is a very light sleeper, and will wake up from most sounds, even the quiet ones. He has suffered from nightmares and insomnia since he was little, and although it's not as bad as it used to be, he still suffers from both occasionally.

His preferred sleeping position is either on his back or his side. He doesn't really prefer one over the other as he usually finds himself tossing and turning between them in his struggle to fall asleep.

Oli Jones

-Full Name:  Oliver Gabriel Jones

-Birthday/Age:  September 7th, 1995. Age is 23 at the start of this story.

-Hometown:  Born in Raleigh, North Carolina. Family moved to Los Angeles when he was 2 years old. 

-Race & Family Heritage:  White. Mostly a mix of Western European ancestry. The largest majorities are part Italian on his mother’s side, and part English and Welsh on his father’s side. 

-Parents:  Marisa Jones - Mother;  Derek Jones - Father

-Siblings:  Rosalie Jones - Older Sister by 4 years;  Dylan Jones - Younger Brother by 2 years

-Pets:  None currently. When he was 7 years old, his parents had gotten the family a male golden retriever dog named Cookie that died when he was 17 after having lived for 10 years. They couldn’t bring themselves to get another dog after Cookie’s death, and he still has not decided to get another pet after moving into his own place. 

-Physical Description:  

Hair:  Medium-short, just past the tops of his ears in length, wavy, medium-brown. Tends to be a little messy.

Eyes:  Forest Green 

Skin tone:  Tan, olive

Build:  Lean 

Height:  5 feet, 10 inches

Style:  Prefers shades of brown and warmer colors; button-down shirts

Tattoos:  A stylized paw print tattoo of his childhood dog Cookie on his upper left arm close to the shoulder to honor his memory.

-Personality:  Kind, loyal, positive, giving, cheerful, slightly introverted (likes to hang out with friends, but also likes his alone time)

Good Traits/Habits:  He is one of the nicest people you could meet as well as a great friend, always willing to help out anyone who needs help, and always making sure he’s able to be there for his friends when they need it. He almost always seems to be smiling or happy when working or hanging out, often making others who are around him happier as well. He has a very positive and optimistic outlook, which really helps bring up the morale of the band when things might not seem great, or helps bring up the mood in general when his friends need a boost. He has a really giving heart, always trying to donate what he can and volunteer with various charities to help those that are less fortunate than him, especially now that he has a lot more money due to being part of a famous band. He’s always very involved in the charity functions the record label sets up for the band, and even donates to and volunteers in some other charities outside of what the band does when he has time. 

Bad Traits/Habits:  He can often give too much of himself away, spreading himself too thin and not taking good enough care of himself, as he gets too caught up in trying to take care of others. When his friends notice he’s doing this, they often have to drag him away from whatever he’s losing himself in and force him to focus on himself or take him out for some fun, just to get him to relax and focus on his own well-being. He also tends to be too soft on people, allowing himself to be a bit of a pushover, finding himself in situations he doesn’t want to be in because he couldn’t say no. He sometimes gets carried away and thinks too emotionally and not rationally enough about certain things, especially about those that pulled on his heartstrings like charities, which makes his band mates and friends have to pull him back and make him reconsider his thoughts and decisions more reasonably to make sure he’s not overbooking himself or falling for a scam.

-Additional Instruments He’s Able to Play:  Acoustic guitar

-How He Decided Which to Play:  He started learning how to play the acoustic guitar in middle school when he asked his parents to take him for guitar lessons. In high school, he looked into learning the bass instead and realized he liked it more. 

-Nickname/Joke Name the Group Calls Him:  The “always optimistic one” of the group, sometimes jokingly referred to as a “bleeding heart”

-What Type of Drunk He Is:  He actually doesn’t like to get drunk that often, as he has a low tolerance, and he doesn’t like the feeling of losing control over yourself that happens when you’re drunk. He’s also a little embarrassed of the type of drunk he turns into, which is the emotional drunk. One moment he’ll be telling every friend he sees, “I love you, man!” while smiling with tears in his eyes, and in the next moment he’ll be upset and crying over the simplest things, like one time when he accidentally stepped on a friend’s foot and kept crying and saying, “I’m so sorry I hurt you!” even though his friend tried to assure him he was fine.

-Goals/Motivation:  Just like the rest of the guys, his more immediate goal is for the band to continue to be successful worldwide. His motivation for that is the fans, hearing from them how much the band’s songs and lyrics mean to them. He loves knowing that their music connects with and helps people, and loves that he can be a part of something that helps so many people. His more long-term goal is finding a nice girl that shares his cheerful outlook on life. His motivation for that is believing that if he finds someone with a similar outlook on life, they’ll be able to be compatible and happy together for many years to come. 

-Fears:  He fears that he will be so caught up trying to take care of one thing he cares about that he will forget to take care of other important people or things he cares for, which will make them think that he doesn’t care about them as much or find them worth his time. He often overcompensates by being there for and helping as many people as he has time for. He also feels guilty for suddenly having as much as he does, as far as wealth and fame, and fears people will think he’s ungrateful or doesn’t care about those less fortunate than him, so he tries to make up for it by donating to and volunteering with lots of charities.

-Nervous Habit:  He fidgets when he’s nervous or worried, constantly wringing his hands together or fiddling with his clothes or an item in his hands. 

-Best Friend/Which Member He Turns to When He Needs Someone:  Roland Beck. He knows Roland cares deeply about those close to him, and will always be ready to listen or help out when needed. Roland’s quiet but strong reassurance helps Oli put his head back on straight when he gets too lost in others and starts to lose himself. 

-Additional Fact:  He is quite good at drawing, and likes to do it in his spare time. He actually designed their first album cover himself.

Good Traits/Habits:  He is a generally fun person to be around. He is funny, often cracking jokes and making games out of less exciting situations to make them more fun. He is carefree, always up to doing something fun, and doesn’t really care about what others think of him or let it affect him, as he just wants to have a good time in whatever he’s involved in. He can usually get most people to laugh at some point in a conversation with him, and most people enjoy his fun-loving personality. If he sees someone is down, he makes it his mission to get them to laugh, or at least make them feel better. He is always down for a fun competition between his band mates and friends to make things more fun, like “race you back to the bus” or “I bet you my slice of cake that I can sign more merch posters in an hour than you.” 

Bad Traits/Habits:  He doesn’t seem to take things seriously enough sometimes, especially when it’s a relatively serious topic. He feels uncomfortable in overly serious situations, so he’s always trying to make a joke out of everything. However, not everything can be fun or made into a joke, some things need to be considered seriously and with care. Sometimes people think he doesn’t consider that as often as he should, which irritates some and makes others think he is immature and a little naive. He also can get overly competitive, either in the form of constant small bets or competitions that his band mates and friends start to find excessive and irritating, or in the form of taking some competitions too seriously and becoming too focused on winning, which makes it less fun overall for the others involved.

-How He Decided Which to Play:  Played in his middle and high school’s bands as a percussionist. People would constantly find him drumming on everything all the time, and would joke that he should be a drummer when he grows up. He eventually realized that he actually liked that idea and made it his career.

-Nickname/Joke Name the Group Calls Him:  The “little brother” of the group, sometimes jokingly referred to as the “baby” of the group

-What Type of Drunk He Is:  He likes to go to parties or the bar/club with his friends semi-frequently and sometimes gets drunk. He turns into a fun drunk and hype man. He’ll be constantly laughing or doing something silly, and can also be found hanging around other drunks who are about to do stupid stunts, like trying to down a full drink in one go, and hyping them up and chanting for them to, “Yeah, do it! Do it!”  

-Goals/Motivation:  Just like the rest of the guys, his more immediate goal is for the band to continue to be successful worldwide. His motivation for that is how much fun it is to be a part of an international band, being able to have a blast playing music he loves for fans around the world. This is all he’s ever known he wanted to do with his life, and he’s so glad he has the opportunity to do it with some of the best band mates he could have asked for. His more long-term goal is finding a girl that can appreciate his humor but still be able to take him seriously, while also having the personality and attitude to help balance him out. His motivation for this is his parents’ relationship. At first glance they seem like opposites, but despite their differences, they’ve managed to stay happily in love his whole life, and helped to balance each other out with their differing attitudes and outlooks on life. 

-Fears:  He fears that people can’t take him seriously or think of him as a joke. This stems from multiple things, one being the fact that he’s always been the youngest one, like being quite a few years younger than his siblings, always being the youngest in his friend group due to his birthday being so late in the year, and now being the youngest in the band. Another reason is the fact that he tends to laugh and try to make jokes during serious situations, which he usually does automatically without thinking to help him feel more comfortable in those situations, but then worries it makes people not be able to take him seriously. Another reason is his insecurities over his short height, worrying how it’ll make people perceive him.

-Nervous Habit:  He has a nervous laugh that frequently comes out at inappropriate times when he’s nervous or worried. He also gets more jumpy. 

-Best Friend/Which Member He Turns to When He Needs Someone:  Josh Meyer. He feels like another older brother to Finn, one that will always look out for him and help him whenever needed. He knows he can always depend on Josh to be there for him and help boost his confidence when he gets too insecure about himself or how others perceive him. 

-Additional Fact:  He loves video games and played them often growing up. He actually began to play competitively in high school and even won a few tournaments.

-Random Trivia: 

His favorite color is blue; he also likes green.

He is left-handed.

He is a heavy sleeper, and can usually sleep through most sounds, except the very loud ones. However, unlike Kai, he doesn't accidentally sleep through his alarms, as his alarms usually wake him up with no problems.

Coming out of Summerslam, the key programs are Cena vs. Reigns, Strowman vs. Lesnar, Balor vs. Wyatt, and possibly Jeff Hardy vs. the Miz if they don’t blow if off right away.

This division was already getting threadbare when they moved Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose into a tag team, and now Samoa Joe and Big Cass are injured.  This could mean bigger opportunities for Jordan and Elias, who were already being pushed a little and now have fewer people ahead of them in line.  But I think the Miz stands to gain the most from the current landscape.  More and more, I think a Roman Reigns vs. Miz feud is inevitable, and although I’d rather get a root canal than watch that, both of them could probably benefit from that pairing.

I keep harping on it but this division needs more people in it.  They’ve got like four women they take seriously as stars (Banks, Bliss, Bayley, Paige if she ever returns), and the other five will never get to that level if they have no one to beat but each other.  So the only way someone like Emma gets a push is a Jinder Mahal deal where she suddenly starts kicking ass out of nowhere, but nobody buys it because we all remember her losing a lot.

I’m really hoping the Mae Young Classic leads to a lot of talent being signed, is what I’m saying.  “A lot” being, like, a dozen or more.

Adding Seth and Dean to the mix has worked out great, but they’ve already beaten the Hardys and they can’t feud with Shesaro forever.  The trick is that you book Seth/Dean against Gallows/Anderson, everybody is going to anticipate Finn Balor and Roman Reigns getting involved to set up Shield vs. Bullet Club, so you risk a backlash if you’re not ready to go there.  There could be a similar issue with the Miztourage, honestly.  So if WWE isn’t planning a genuine Shield reunion soon, their tag division options may be pretty limited.

The Hardys appear to be no closer to getting the rights to their TNA gimmicks than they were six months ago, so they are rapidly running out of anything else to do in the meantime.  The fans have been exceptionally charitable about accepting their new gimmick of “guys who imply they’ll be doing the Broken gimmick soon,” but I don’t think that’ll last forever.

There's been talk about TJP being injured but I couldn’t find anything concrete about it.  Darren Young has been on the injured list for months, but was reportedly cleared recently, so it’s just a matter of waiting for creative to have something for him.

Summer has been off TV for over a year and she’s been reportedly cleared to compete since May; I feel like this is going to end with her contract running out.

I’ve heard Joe is expected to recover within six weeks, but that seems speculative considering I can’t even find a report on which of his knees is supposed to be injured.  Cass, meanwhile, is projected to miss Wrestlemania.  I haven’t seen anything on Bayley or Dawson.

Paige underwent neck surgery in October and it usually takes a full year to get cleared after that.  So I know everyone’s wondering if her drug suspensions and drama with Alberto Del Rio will affect her return, but the answer is probably still a ways off.

WWE Supercard, as a massive use of my time.

Lemme preface this: I’ve been wanting to talk about this game for so long now... 

I have had WWE Supercard for the last 730 days.  Of that, I have failed to log in 27 of those. That is, when rounded up.. 0.037... 3.7% of days, I have missed in the last year without opening this app and playing usually at least one match... or ten.. or.. more.

As it stands, my win loss record is 1,855/393, with my strongest card being a SmackdownLive Hardened Randy Orton, level 28 with a top stat of Charisma - 8,448.  I’m Wrestlemania+ rank, and have never bought a card pack to get me to this point.

Lets slow this down, I can feel some of you getting lost.  WWE Supercard is a mobile game that involves cards collected through random means on the app.  It works like top trumps, in that you have four categories

-Toughness

-Charisma

and differing ranks of card, those being;

-Uncommon

-Rare

-Super Rare

-Ultra Rare

-Epic

-Legendary

-Wrestlemania

-Hardened (Raw/Live/NXT)

Your deck for standard games is comprised of 4 male superstars and two divas (female superstars), and from an average rank of these cards, your level is determined.  You can power up cards by feeding them other cards, and each card has a maximum level it can reach. Cards feature wrestlers, and the idea is to have a balanced team with all bases covered, and yet a strong enough team to win matches.

A match is best out of three, using a top trumps style mechanic where you just have to have higher stats than your opponent.  Each card can be used once, plus the use of one of two support cards acting like a deck or stat buff.  Tag team matches rely on the cards orientation, as each superstar is either an up, down, left or right.  mixing vertical and horizontal results in a debuff, the same direction is neutral and pairing up/down or left/right results in a small stat boost.  There are other match types and events, but we will get into those shortly.

All in all, a match often takes about 60 seconds depending on how long you spend picking which card to send out.  this then takes you to a screen where depending on how many of the three you won, you get whats known as ‘draft picks’... that being, a board 5 x 5 of cards, which you pick from and gain whatever cards you chose.

on each board, there is one card of your current deck rank (so for me, Wrestlemania)  which when found, resets the board again.

Anyone who plays this game, knows all that.  Now on to the real fun stuff of why, after 730 days am I still playing?  Well, the answer is because I enjoy the simple feedback loop.  Let me explain a little more:

I’m sat and waiting for something, lets say.. a bus.  So I open Supercard on my phone, and play a few matches.  I check how my deck is doing in the King of the Ring (an entirely automated event bar refilling energy gauges), or i feed a whole bunch of common cards to finally help my Wrestlemania Roman Reigns reach its max level.

Since season 2, the game has introduced daily log in bonus’, where if you log in a set number of days in a month, you can unlock a top rank card.  This month, for example, after 28 days out of 31, you unlock a Kofi Kingston RAW Hardened card.  This would naturally boost a newbies deck up towards my level, meaning despite my win/loss... its becoming more common to find people with under 300 combined matches on my rank.  The same happened when the micro-transactions to purchase high level cards was unlocked, people laying upwards of £120 to gain top level cards in a full deck.

For a small while, that ruined the fun for me.  I’ve had friends who i used to play alongside who have quit because of annoyance at the changes being made to card balancing.  For some reason, however, I’ve stuck with it.  Despite the period where everyone has a high level Wrestlemania Kane, which I missed out on by one day.

I don’t even want to estimate how many hours I’ve poured into this game, and how much time I’ve wasted in small chunks over the last 730 days.  But... unlike most games I have on my phone that tend to stay for a couple weeks, then get deleted... I’ve never actually fallen out of interest with Supercard.  Maybe its the fact that every time there’s a PPV, the game matches with an event involving one of the matches?  Maybe its the fact that it is so simple and almost mindless to play, and there’s a certain charm to watching the cards play out the entrances and finishing moves of the superstars they depict.  Either way, if you see me on my phone? High chance I’m watching my over powered Orton smash an Enzo Amore or Macho Man Randy Savage.  I remember being insanely happy when my deck was fully levelled members of The Shield, Finn Balor, Paige and Bayley.  I remember how hyped I was to message my friends and tell them that the event was about to start and race them to see if I could get the best cards first.  I still get the same excitement now when I log in and it tells me there’s currently a Alexa Bliss event going on...(which I should be playing rather than writing this)

Webber’s early works with lyricist Tim Rice (Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus  Christ Superstar and Evita) proved how great storytelling is heightened using rock as a template.   Sir Andrew’s latest blockbuster, School of Rock, adapted from the 2003 film starring Jack Black, proves how comfortable this composer is with the genre.

In adapting School of Rock from film to play Webber enlisted Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellows and two of his Love Never Dies collaborators, Glenn Slater as lyricist and Laurence Conner to direct.   The result is a smash hit on Broadway, which opened in 2015 at the Winter Garden theatre, more recently London and now in a near exhilerating National Tour in the United States.

The stage adaptation mirrors closely to the film where a case of intentional mistaken identity takes a former boy band rocker Dewey Finn, who is hired as a substitute teacher at a fifth grade prep school, and discovers that music is the universal bridge between adult and child.

The cast of this tour is fantastic, lead by Rob Colletti as Dewey Finn who has an innate connection with the child actors he interacts with.  This adolescent quality of Mr. Colletti allows for a more sincere emotional connection and the audience is instantly cheering for his character to succeed.  Equally as engaging is Matt Bittner as Dewey’s longtime friend and ex-bandmate Ned, who has an engaging stage presence and quick comic reflexes which are paired perfectly with his onstage girlfriend Patty, played by a ferocious Emily Borromeo.  Lexie Dorsett Sharp does a fine job as Dewey’s love interest Rosalie in what is arguably the most underwritten role in the musical.  

But it is not the adults fans of this show come to see, it is the children. Make no mistake, this is where the show ignites with an emotional fervor, aided by JoAnne M. Hunters specific choreography.  Phoenix Suman (Little Zack) on guitar, Ava Briglia (Tomika) band manager/vocals, Theodroa Silverman (Katie) on bass and Gilberto Moretti-Hamilton on drums all prove that their classical roots have formed the the maturity needed to rock out.

However it is behind the spectacle of watching children create music that is where the soul of School of Rock lies.  It is in fact a lesson in now important the arts are in shaping the people we are today.  Without having access to music, theatre, sports and other extra curricular activities that challenge the creative spirit of a human, we are left with little to inspire and transform.  Music and the arts allows us to express ourselves in ways no other medium does, and in that expression comes in-reinvention, which Dewey now embodies.
