         IF  THERE  IS  ONE  THING  the  phoenix  had  been  quite  expert  at,  it’s  hiding  his  deepest  fears  behind  a  demeanor  of  calm  and  composure  —  as  the  commander  of  the  first  division  as  well  as  Whitebeard’s  second  in  command,  such  was  the  burden  he  had  to  carry  but  it  is  one  he  carried  with  pride.  However,  his  little  sister’s  statement  would  have  him  wondering  if  perhaps  pretending  to  have  it  all  figured  out  all  the  time,  may  be  setting  the  bar  a  little  too  high  for  those  same  younger  ones  he  sought  to  protect.

         There’s  a  soft  smile  upon  his  lips  as  he  takes  a  seat  by  her  side,  willing  to  dedicate  his  full  attention  and  time  alike  to  her,  until  she  feels  quite  better  —  he  knows  firsthand,  most  demons  can  not  be  silenced  forever,  but  if  they  can  momentarily  mute  them,  then  slowly  surely,  she  can  learn  to  slay  them  on  her  own.  He  has  enough  faith  in  her  strength  to  believe  so.

a jest, or at least an attempt of one. it sounds & feels like an open casket, it’s there; body, head to toe, but it’s empty / gone /  so half-assed.  smile cracked visage /  a statuette of flax & jade [honey & pears]  that jade is tarnished, & valkyrie depiction [such strength] will fade in this moment.  for that nervous beating  /  nervous / so nervous / that beating in your chest [a hollow case]  it shakes under this thunder /  this warning /  WARNING /  WARNING / warning of what aches.                      guilt. 

EVE;  THAT ACHING IN YOUR RIBS [did adam take back his rib?] or has it finally rotted, slow to digest in your gut.  that aching is near insufferable.  are you not crafted of ivory / mended of iron,  beauty inlaid with pride / such skill...  so why ?  why are you aching ?  have your clavicle snapped from unsureity / pressure to meet a father’s dwam for a family / for a girl. [a girl that had since died]  WAR WILL MEND  /  WAR WILL SETTLE  /  war was your savior & your killer; you held a sword  [how he once did]  you held a sword, you raised that sword ---   you impaled who you were again & again & again, & AGAIN. what remnants remained, you piece together; are you happy ?  

do want your father to be disappointed ? ‘  i’m joking -- I just have a lot on my mind is all.  ‘   a huff will clog your windpipe.   are you choking on her sentiments, are you choking at her oh so keen perception ?  she sings you like a song & reads you like a poem; attuned wit, how gentle fingers seem to always be strumming at your dissonance / your discordant tune. if you came undone... AH. worried, yet   you so at peace with your turmoil / the monster that you hide beneath your bed  / the beast you cannot slay -- no, too scared to fight. why does this demon hunger so, feasting at your doubts / masticating on a pending choice. [a choice]  you must fight or surrender -- but this beast, this beast,  you can't slay with a blade, you can’t use your hands  [you can't defeat it]  no matter how many swings you take [you are too weak.]  it does nothing.   

KNIGHTHOOD IS A VEIL that welcomed you with open arms; the only veil you felt you could take.   so much guilt.   there you are,  clinging to a sword like it will cast off those demons / her ( don’t look )   she sees right through this armor. to her, you are you -- denuded of that steel / steel / a steel blade you use to shield you --  your heart / fears you seem to cling to so.  does the image of a ring really look like a noose.  you swallow this guilt like pomegranate seeds, & they always tend to stick in your teeth / so irksome / unable to pick them out.  would she understand ?

WOMAN; does the armor you hide in, does it feel so heavy now...  her words are arrows, these arrows shoot / catch in the creeks of that steel / steel that clad a  girl.   & GODDESS, they splinter, always under your skin, far too deep to pull out, your nails can never dig them out.  these ghost pains / these ghosts; it’s so particular how lost will shape you, how it will pluck the pillars of servitude / innocence from skin, & oh, when you pull too hard, too sudden -- that passion will pour as mead / bleeding till you are depleted, & what will root itself, it will grow like weeds. & those weeds, you water them the more you age. the more you stall  /  a constant ebbing / a constant vacillating between knighthood & wifehood.   does a compromise exist ?   is a family name, being, a debt you feel you owe--  is a father’s [sacrifices] pride more valuable than your own ? 

  there’s always guilt.   ‘ but tell me, Dorothea, do i really look that sad ?   ’    do you really want an answer ?

         THE  AIR  IS  WARM  TODAY  but  it  does  not  prevent  the  chills  coursing  through  the  entire  frail  figure  of  the  banshee  prompting  a  halt  in  her  step  in  the  clearing  of  the  woods,  mudded  boots  kicking  at  the  soil  now  paralyzed  in  place.

         Eliza  having  spent  majority  of  her  time  in  isolation,  is  not  accustomed  to  human  communication,  certainly  not  being  the  target  of  flowery  words  from  men  —  perhaps,  if  she  has  remained  in  her  small  village,  right  now  she  will  have  been  the  appropriate  age  for  marriage,  already  spoken  for  to  help  run  some  family  farm.  

         Right  now  however,  she  merely  freezes  upon  the  first  indication  of  any  fond  feelings  for  her  and  she  dismisses  it  as  anxiety  towards  the  unknown  when  the  flush  coloring  ghostly  features  may  be  hinting  otherwise.  

         Eliza  has  never  cared  for  romance;  even  in  books  the  thought  of  it  is  scoffed  at  and  dismissed  as  worse  than  fantasy  —  a  terrible  lie  as  she  deems  it  impossible  for  another  to  harbor  feelings  for  another  devoid  of  their  own  selfishness  and  benefit,  yet  why  is  it  this  one  boy  seems  to  have  her  questioning  her  every  belief?  Haunting  her  dreams?  No,  she  dismisses  that  thought,  it’s  unrelated  to  him.. 

                   it  can’t  be  related..

         KIND  WORDS  SPOKEN  FROM  HER  SISTER,  tug  upon  Rosa’s  heartstrings  —  it  seems  even  after  spending  some  time  apart,  being  reunited  now,  Akane  can  still  read  through  her.  

         Externally  she  has  been  getting  by  alright,  sailing  from  one  island  to  another  as  her  mellifluous  voice  fills  every  sea  with  its  beautiful  melodies,  yet  no  spotlight  nor  applause  can  ever  replace  the  cheers  of  her  family’s  laughter  nor  fill  the  gaping  loneliness  of  losing  them.  

         She  fights  to  manage  a  smile  for  her  sister’s  sake,  to  keep  up  the  strong  façade  she  has  managed  to  build  up  so  well  during  her  time  sailing  alone,  still  a  well  of  tears  blurs  a  vision  of  indigo  as  she  reaches  for  Akane’s  hand,  and  squeezes  it  lightly  as  though  offering  comfort  and  reassurance  —  or  perhaps,  she  has  been  seeking  such  herself. 

         ❝Maybe  one  day..  I  won’t  have  to  anymore..  maybe,  we  can  all  set  sail  together  again❞  she  speaks  her  wishes  in  a  soft  whisper,  fearful  if  she  were  to  utter  it  any  louder,  the  universe  will  take  even  that  away  from  her,  and  it  is  all  she  has  left  —  nothing  but  a  far  away  pipe  dream  she  understands  very  well  will  never  come  true.  Sailing  under  one  flag,  upon  one  home  —  she  clings  desperately  to  that  dream  to  keep  her  going.

[ nightmare ] for your muse to wake mine from a nightmare

         NIGHT  TERRORS  WERE  NOTHING  NEW  to  the  hummingbird,  rather  an  unwelcome  guest  which  frequented  her  every  now  and  then,  becoming  much  more  scarce  the  more  time  she  spent  with  her  new  family.  Among  the  Whitebeard  Pirates  she  felt  safe,  so  much  that  it  seemed  all  her  fears  of  the  past  had  been  but  a  far  distant  memory.  

         Such  had  been  the  case  for  a  good  few  years,  but  rainbows  and  sunshine  couldn’t  last  forever  and  eventually  the  storms  had  to  rage  again.  

         With  their  recent  tragedy,  her  old  guest  would  visit  again  and  so  much  more  frequently  than  ever  before  —  now  every  night  since  the  loss  of  her  loved  ones,  she  would  toss  and  turn,  crying  and  screaming  in  bed  for  the  ones  she  could  never  have  back.  

         She  avoids  sleep  in  an  attempt  to  keep  it  at  bay  but  eventually  exhaustion  wins  over  and  it  plays  again  on  repeat  in  her  head:  the  vision  of  her  commander  falling  before  her  very  own  eyes,  her  father’s  disfigured  face,  haunting  her  worst  nightmares.

         ❝No,  no,  no,  stop!!  Don’t  hurt  them  —  stop!❞  her  thoughts  are  interrupted  with  a  gentle  awakening  —  a  helping  hand  reaching  for  her  and  drawing  her  away  from  her  land  of  terror  and  darkness,  back  to  reality.  

         Indigo  flutters  awake,  greeted  by  the  warm  sight  of  her  sister’s  comforting  presence,  prompting  panic  shuddering  to  slowly  ease  into  a  defeated  slump.  

         She  doesn’t  need  to  ask  Akane  to  realize  what  had  been  going  on  —  after  all,  this  had  happened  many  times  before  since  the  war,  but  Rosa  had  come  a  long  way  since  she  couldn’t  so  much  as  utter  a  word  —  at  least  now  she  manages  to  speak  to  the  sister  by  her  side  when  she  finds  her  there.  

         ❝Sorry...  did  I  —  did  I  wake  you?❞  she  asks  slowly,  gaze  dropping  apologetically  and  digits  clutching  her  own  blanket.  ❝I  tried  not  to  sleep...  but  I  just  —  Sorry...❞

         THE  UNICORN  WASN’T  GOING  TO  SPEAK  OF  IT  —  EVER.  Personal  matters  of  the  heart  are  not  her  place  to  meddle  with,  also  her  little  flower  had  confided  in  her  and  Aurelia  would  rather  take  her  secrets  to  the  grave  than  allow  it  to  slip.  

         However,  it  is  witnessing  the  first  division  commander  snap  so  uncharacteristically  at  his  old  man  today  which  draws  the  last  straw,  and  she  can  no  longer  remain  a  mere  idle  bystander  in  this  tragedy.  

         An  mother  older  sister  can  never  willingly  watch  as  her  own  children  throw  themselves  in  the  line  of  fire  —  nor  can  she  allow  them  to  disrespect  their  father.  

         Perhaps,  if  it  had  been  another  of  his  children,  Aurelia  wouldn’t  be  so  concerned  but  Marco  had  never  lost  his  cool  nor  responded  so  impolitely  to  his  father  —  in  fact,  he’s  always  the  one  to  put  the  rest  in  their  place  if  they  so  much  as  dare  raise  their  voice.  This  isn’t  like  him  and  she  knows  exactly  why  and  is  determined  to  put  a  stop  to  it  before  he  does  something  he  regrets,  even  more  than  what  has  already  been  done,  that  is.  

         She  knows  he’s  lying,  perhaps  it  does  take  a  unicorn  to  know  because  the  phoenix  is  pretty  good  at  hiding  whatever  is  going  on  with  him.  

         The  head  nurse  doesn’t  dare  talk  about  it  on  deck,  instead  she  rearranges  the  nurses  schedule  to  ensure  it  is  her  turn  to  be  on  duty  in  the  Captain’s  chambers  tonight  to  fix  all  his  medical  equipment  intact  before  softly,  hesitantly,  requesting  he  hear  her  out  in  private.  ❝It’s...  Tomoe.❞  she  slips,  quietly.  

         ❝The  reason  our  first  division  commander  is  behaving  so  strangely  —  the  reason  for  his  outburst  today  too,  I’m  sure..❞  while  she  also  thinks  it’s  long  overdue  considering  she’s  always  reprimanding  the  old  man  for  his  drinking  too.  ❝It’s  our  little  flower..  I  fear  he  broke  her  heart  —  and  dare  I  say,  his  own  in  the  process..❞  

         She  pauses  then,  gentle  digits  placing  over  his  arm,  somewhat  pleading  him  to  do  something.  ❝If  anyone  can  talk  any  sense  to  him  —  it’s  you,  Edward..  he  listens  to  you,  he  respects  you  and  he..  doesn’t  have  it  all  as  put  together  as  he  pretends..❞

❛❛ Rosa, huh? And just what makes you think you have what it takes to become a pirate? I'll tell you right now, it's a big world out there-- filled with all sorts of unpredictable dangers! ❜❜ his tone is not at all patronizing, rather purposely testing the doe-eyed petite of her admirable adamancy to sail alongside their much feared, notorious pirate crew.

         HE  COULDN’T  HAVE  BEEN  much  older  than  the  petite  musician,  yet  already  the  man  before  her  is  an  infamous  pirate  with  a  name  for  himself  —  needless  to  say,  Rosa  admired  and  also  felt  slightly  envious  of  the  young  man.

         However,  his  query  is  one  catching  her  off  guard  as  never  before  has  anyone  taken  interest  in  her  reasons  —  they  all  had  their  minds  already  made  up  that  she  didn’t  have  what  it  takes  before  even  giving  her  a  chance.

         ❝I  —  I  just..  ❞  embarrassed  and  also  shy,  she  naturally  stutters  on  her  words  when  put  on  the  spot  like  this,  wide  eyed  indigo  full  of  desperation;  but  nothing  he  can  say  about  the  big  dangerous  world  out  there  is  anything  she  hasn’t  been  told  countless  times  prior.

         She  wonders  if  she  truly  does  have  what  it  takes  to  become  a  pirate;  insecurity  and  doubt  begin  clawing  their  way  to  her  already  vulnerable  heart,  yet  finally  determination  gleams  and  she  stands  her  ground.

         ❝I  don’t  want  to  be  alone  anymore!❞  she  declares  her  truth.  ❝Loneliness  is  the  worst  feeling  in  the  world  —  I  may  not  be  strong  or  big,  but  to  never  feel  this  way  again,  I  can  do  whatever  it  takes;  I  will  not  stop  fighting  ——  even  if  it  kills  me!!❞

         THE  POTENTIAL  HIS  OLD  MAN  recognized  two  years  ago  during  the  summit  war,  the  very  same  fire  their  own  second  division  commander  gave  his  life  up  to  protect  —  Marco  too  held  the  Strawhat  pirate  in  high  regards  and  had  no  doubt,  it  was  only  a  matter  of  time  before  the  rest  of  the  world  saw  it  too.  

         A  wide  grin  at  the  mere  mention  of  Luffy  is  already  answer  to  what  the  phoenix  thinks  but  he  wastes  no  time  in  confirming  confidently  anyway.  ❝Yes-yoi❞
