Is This a Tragedy?
You're an actor and you finally got your big role in a hit TV show. Unfortunately your character only made it to Season 2 before they killed you off. This is how I imagine the lads men react to watching that scene [Requested by: Anon]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
𝚉𝚊𝚢𝚗𝚎
calm cool and collected on the outside; whole time he's really having an internal breakdown
grips your hand a little tighter in his as the scene progresses
“are you dying? is this a tragedy?”
is very aware that it’s just a show, but can’t stop his heart from pounding at the thought of losing you
rubs his eyes to keep himself from tearing up
stares at you after the episode ends “What?” “The thought of losing you has always terrified me; watching you perform that scene does not help” “it’s my job Zayne besides im right here”
finds himself staring at you more often just trying to commit every feature of yours to memory
never willingly watches that episode again
skips over that part every time or just turns the show off “You still can’t watch it?” “No”
praises you for the phenomenal performance although he claims it was a little too realistic
Tumblr media
𝚁𝚊𝚏𝚊𝚢𝚎𝚕
is great at slipping in and out of character so he was the one helping you with your acting skills
sits up straight when he realizes what's happening “is this the scene you've been keeping secret?”
falls out immediately in your lap
bawling his eyes out goes as far to curl up in your lap
would be so proud of not only you, but himself as well for helping you perfect your craft
“Do I get credit as the acting coach?” “Yes would you like a reward?” “You know I do”
Although he’s proud of you he can’t bring himself to watch the episode again also doesn't continue watching the show in general "they killed off my favorite character how can I continue watching it now?"
keeps pushing you to work on crying on command so if you need to cry for your next roll it’s even better
acted out the scene with you at home for fun once and had a mental breakdown
Tumblr media
𝚇𝚊𝚟𝚒𝚎𝚛
Fell asleep in the middle of the show and missed it
“just watch it when you get a chance” “no replay it”
immediately turns the show off in the middle of the scene
“im not watching this” “Xav…” “No”
drills you with questions about why you didn’t tell him you were dying in that episode
“I can’t watch that don’t make me watch it” "You're being a little dramatic don't you think?"
pouts, pouts, and pouts some more
won’t watch it no matter how much you beg
although he never finished watching the whole scene he holds your hand tighter now these days
asks for a warning next time so he can prepare himself …… to fast forward
Tumblr media
𝚂𝚢𝚕𝚞𝚜
watches quietly giving away nothing
“You even shed a few tears for your own scene?” teases you for crying at your own death scene “it looks different after the editing okay!”
won't admit it, but one time was enough
“it made you sad didn’t it?” “Well I don’t take pleasure in watching you die onscreen sweetie” “im alive though” “Let's keep it that way”
weasels his way out of watching the scene again
his voice slightly wavers whenever you bring it up
avoids eye contact when you tease him about it
held you tighter at night for at least a month
Bonus: the twins bawled their eyes out and tackled you to the ground with a bone crushing hug

Batboys finding you sleeping in wierd places headcanon:
Tumblr media
Damian Wayne
"Bro, you can't keep doing this." Damian finds you sleeping in the weirdest spots, and he's lowkey over it. One time, you're passed out in the Batmobile, snacks everywhere, legs hanging out the door. He just stands there, staring at you like you're the most chaotic thing he's ever seen. “How do you even fall asleep like this?” But of course, he’s not gonna leave you there. He rolls his eyes, adjusts the seat, and tucks you in (very dramatically) like, “Don’t make this a habit.” He’s not mad. He’s just... concerned? But mostly shook by your ability to sleep anywhere.
Tim Drake
“I literally told you to stop drinking so much coffee.” Tim finds you asleep everywhere—face down on a stack of papers, in the middle of the Batcave, on top of the Batcomputer. He doesn’t even act surprised anymore. He’s just like, “Well, I warned you.” One time, you’re passed out on the couch, snacks everywhere, and Tim picks up the coffee cup you definitely spilled while napping. “I love you, but this is chaos,” he says, brushing some crumbs off your face. "Next time, please at least use the chair." He leaves a note with your next coffee: “You’re welcome.”
Dick Grayson
“You’re so cute, but like, also... why???” Dick finds you asleep in the kitchen, spread out on the counter like you’ve been hit by a truck. He can't help but laugh, but also he's lowkey impressed that you managed to fall asleep there. He pulls out his phone and takes a pic (because of course he does). “I’m definitely showing this to everyone,” he says, not even hiding his grin. You wake up mid-photo, trying to act like you weren’t drooling, but Dick just chuckles. "Gonna frame this one." You’re like, “Please, no,” and he’s already texting it to the group chat.
Jason Todd
“You’re literally doing this to mess with me, aren’t you?” Jason finds you sleeping everywhere—on the floor, under the Batmobile, sprawled out on the roof. He’s got that annoyed big brother vibe, like, “You’re going to get a crick in your neck,” but the second he sees you all cute and dead to the world, he can’t help but sigh. One time, he even gently picks you up to move you. You wake up in a daze, and he’s like, “I didn’t sign up for this. But you look adorable when you're asleep, so whatever.” “No need to carry me, I’m fine,” you mumble. “I’m doing it because I have no choice,” he responds.
Duke Thomas
“How do you even sleep like this?” Duke is actually concerned when he finds you sleeping in random spots, but at the same time, it’s kinda funny. One time, he finds you passed out on the floor of the training room, head on a punching bag like it’s your pillow. He’s like, “You... you okay? How does that even happen?” He sits down next to you and gives you a little nudge. “You’re making me look bad, you know that? I’m over here trying to be all cool, and you’re taking naps in the middle of the Batcave.” He laughs but also kinda adjusts you, “Next time, at least use a pillow or something.”
Bruce Wayne
“You’re doing this on purpose, aren’t you?” Bruce, being Bruce, finds you sleeping in the weirdest places—and honestly, he’s just not even shocked anymore. One time, you’re passed out on top of the Batcomputer, legs dangling off the side like you’re part of the furniture. Bruce just stares for a second before doing the whole “I’m-not-angry-I’m-just-disappointed” thing. “Please don’t sleep in here,” he says, carefully moving you to a more... comfy spot (probably your bed, but he’s not gonna say that). He tries to keep it chill, but there's definitely a dad vibe. "You could’ve at least stayed on the couch." You wake up, confused, and he’s like, “Just... don't fall asleep in the Batsuit next time.”

so I got Steve Trevor;
From one highly stressful situation to the next it seems, Steve really wishes his gun didn’t get misplaced.
Especially considering he’s absolutely not where he was less than a minute ago, considering the endless void of… green.
Why is it always green…
“What the fuck” He’s keeping his stance ready for anything while trying to get his bearings at least somewhat, he seems to be surrounded by ruins, somewhat familiar looking ruins.
“You have experience with Pandora’s box, correct?”
Steve quickly turns around and has his arms loose and ready, slightly up to either defend or attack.
In front of him is a floating… boy?
“Hello” the slightly glowing, black and white clad teen gives him a lazy little wave, cheeky sort. alright then.
“Where the hell am I?”
"Good guess but that's a little more to the left from here"
"What?"
The teen’s expression shifts to something more serious, "Listen, the box got stolen and I need someone with knowledge about the damn thing that can also inconspicuously come with me and isn't bound by dumb ancient rules to help me out with getting it back where it belongs. You came recommended by Pandora so..."
“Are you serious- wait, Pandora as in the Pandora?”
"Yes, Lady Pandora, keeper of the box with the ancient evils or whatever. Of course she knows about you, like I said you have prior experience with dealing with this thing- you are Steven Trevor right? Consort to princess Diana of Themyscira?"
"Consort-" Alright okay so this is really happening, it’s spread to other dimensions now or something? he rubs the bridge of his nose, he could use a good stiff drink to handle this revelation.
"Partner, boyfriend, whatever, listen we need to stay focused here" the teen claps his hands, it actually does effectively grab Steve’s attention back.
"Right, yes that's me. I'm, fuck you're telling me that fucking thing-?"
"Yes, and I could really use a hand here with solving this mess please. Oh uhm, Danny Phantom, nice to meet you.” Danny holds his hand out and Steve gives him a handshake. so the kid knows about the basic typical earth greeting. good to know.
“Now, we got no time to lose, I'll be sure to put you right back where I found you once we're done so no worries"
Well Steve doesn't really want that cause he was in the process of getting kidnapped when he got dragged through a swirling green portal. sadly his attackers confiscated his gun so he’s currently very unarmed but he’d take it if it means he’s not at risk of getting tortured for Justice League intel and used as bait to lure the heroes in.
"Just drop me off in Washington DC. I'd prefer that"
"Whatever you want bud" Danny grins and leads him towards a different portal in the distance.
Steve figures it’s in his best interest to go along with everything for now but once his comms stop being dead he’ll notify the Justice League immediately. Still though, something in his gut tells him that this kid isn’t bad news.
He has this weird feeling that Diana would like him.
Use this random DC character wheel to write a dpxdc prompt, fanfic, or blurb below! (Or just say what ya got ehehe)

Driver of the day | C. Leclerc
Summary: Charles is asked to pick up the little sister of his best friend at the airport.
Tumblr media
Charles Leclerc drummed his fingers against the steering wheel, his sunglasses shielding him from the Riviera's afternoon sun. Theo, one of his best friends, sat beside him, scrolling through his phone with a bored expression, occasionally glancing up at the chaos of Nice Airport’s Kiss and Ride.
“Remind me why we’re doing this again?” Theo asked, flicking through his notifications. “There are better things to do than standing here unnecessarily long.”
“Because her brother asked,” Charles replied without looking over.
Theo snorted. “Right, and when he asks, you jump. Got it.”
Charles didn’t bother responding, his attention shifting to the waiting crowd. “He said she would be standing near the main pickup area.”
Theo squinted through the windshield, his eyes scanning the line of travellers, some were leaving, others arrived. “What does she even look like now? It’s been, what, four years?”
Charles shrugged. “Same as before, I guess. Short, shy, always in oversized dresses or black clothing...”
“And braces,” Theo added with a grin. “Don’t forget the braces.”
They both laughed, their shared image of Y/n frozen in the awkward teenage years when they teased her relentlessly. But then Theo straightened, leaning closer to the window. “Wait... oh, shit, is that her?”
Charles frowned, following Theo’s gaze. His grip on the wheel loosened as his eyes landed on a woman standing by a suitcase. She was polished, confident, elegant, and nothing like the Y/n they remembered. “Holy shit, indeed,” he muttered.
Theo leaned back, shaking his head in disbelief. “No way. That’s not her. That’s... someone else. Has to be.”
“She’s standing exactly where your brother said she would be,” Charles said, his voice quieter now.
Theo grinned, recovering quickly. “Well, if it’s not her, at least we are about to make a stranger’s day.” He rolled down the window and leaned out, his smirk wide. “Need a taxi to Monaco?”
The woman turned toward them, and her expression shifted from confusion to surprise to annoyance as recognition flickered across her face.
“Yep, that’s her,” Charles said under his breath, pulling the car into park and stepping out.
Y/n’s voice carried as she looked at them. “What are you two doing here? Where’s my brother?”
Charles grinned, slipping his sunglasses up onto his head. “Something came up. He sent us instead.”
Theo was already out of the car, circling to grab her suitcase. “And lucky for us, too. Although... we almost didn’t recognise you.”
Charles nodded, his grin turning a touch softer as he studied her. “We were expecting the old Y/n.”
“The braces. The dresses,” Theo chimed in, shaking his head in mock disbelief.
“Not... this,” Charles finished, gesturing toward her with a vague wave of his hand.
Y/n raised an eyebrow, her tone sharp. “This?”
Theo smirked. “You know, the whole ‘looking like you just walked off a runway’ thing.”
Charles chuckled as he opened the back door for her. “Ignore him. He’s not used to surprises.”
Y/n sighed, brushing past them to climb into the car. “And I see you two haven’t changed at all.”
Theo hoisted her suitcase into the trunk, laughing. “Still bossy. Yep, it’s definitely her.”
As they returned to the car and Charles merged into traffic, Theo twisted in his seat, looking back at her. “So, what’s Madrid been like? Because, clearly, it did something to you.”
Charles shook his head, his grin lingering as he watched Y/n through the rearview mirror. “Careful, Theo. You might not survive the ride to Monaco if you keep that up.”
Theo and Y/n gasped when Charles braked hard. Y/n’s hand reached for the door for a grip, and her eyes grew round.
“Why is he driving?” She asked.
A grin formed on Theo’s lips. “You know, he needs to practice his normal driving skills in a normal car on a normal road every once in a while.”
“Theo, what the fuck,” Charles replied with an annoyed sigh.
For the first time, a smile formed on Y/n’s lips. “Glad you force him to because I can’t tell this is an F1 driver for Ferrari.”
Laughter from Theo filled the car, even to the point he started to cough and gasp for air. Y/n couldn’t help, but laugh as well, but she silently laughed. It was silent at the driver's side, as Charles didn’t know how to react. However, he could smile at her comment as it made her laugh.
The car pulled into the Maison's driveway, the sound of the engine echoing softly through the otherwise peaceful area. As Charles slowed down, Y/n glanced out the window, smiling at the familiar surroundings.
As Charles steered the car to the front door, Theo leaned back, stretching his arms over his head. "Well, this is it.”
Y/n looked at the front door, then around the car and finally at Charles. “You’re really gonna park it like this?” she asked with a raised eyebrow.
Theo chuckled. "Don’t worry, he’s got normal parking skills." He shot Charles a teasing grin.
Charles muttered something under his breath, his hands tight on the steering wheel as he guided the car into place, clearly trying to ignore the jabs.
Once the car came to a stop, Y/n pushed open the door and stepped out. She grabbed her suitcase from the trunk, still feeling the faint adrenaline buzz from their chaotic drive. “You know,” she said, her smile playful, “you might want to stick to F1 tracks, Charles. You’re scaring the shit out of me.”
Theo’s laughter erupted again, echoing around the driveway. “You should’ve seen her face when he hit the brakes,” he said, his voice nearly cracking with amusement.
Charles rolled his eyes as he exited the car, closing the door behind him. “Very funny,” he muttered.
Y/n turned to face him, a grin still tugging at her lips. “Honestly, I’m just glad I survived that ride. Can’t say the same for my heart, though.”
Charles gave her a sidelong glance, his lips twitching into a faint smile. “If it makes you feel better, you’re not the first person to say that.”
“Well, I’m not in the mood to be your next record,” she replied, still smiling.
“Next time, I’ll make sure you’re in the front seat,” Theo said, his tone mock-serious as he stepped up next to her. “First-row experience.”
“Let’s just get inside,” Charles grumbled, the playful banter finally wearing thin. “I’ll deal with you two later.”
“Ooooooo,” Theo hummed, throwing his hands up.
As they entered the Maison, soft words filled the air. They all walked to the living room, where the words came from. Laurent, Y/n’s brother, was calling. His suit was slightly wrinkled, and his tie was loosened, the telltale signs of a long day at work. He was still in the process of kicking off his shoes when he saw his little sister. A massive smile appeared, and his jaw dropped in excitement. He pointed at his phone and held up his hand, letting them know it would take five minutes. He walked over to Y/n and gave her a hug and a kiss on her hair.
Y/n smiled. Her brother had always been this way: always multitasking and making sure things were in order. It was one of the reasons she admired him so much. She sat down on the couch and looked around. Not much had changed, apart from a few photos and different cushions.
Theo dropped down into one of the armchairs with a sigh. “So, what’s the plan, huh? What do you two want to do first? Tour the place? Hit the beach?”
Charles, who had been quiet while her brother handled the call, shifted his gaze to Y/n. The room felt oddly still for a moment, their shared gaze lingering longer than either of them expected.
Y/n, feeling the weight of the quiet, broke eye contact first and turned to glance at her brother. “Let him finish first, I guess. We’ve got time,” she said lightly, her voice carrying an undertone that belied how restless she felt beneath the surface.
Her brother spoke up, his voice clear despite the distance. “Alright, I’ll be done in a minute. Just trying to sort out a few things. You three get comfortable, help yourselves to whatever’s in the kitchen.”
Charles stood still for a second, the quiet of the moment pressing down on him, and for the first time since they had arrived, he felt the subtle tension that had built between him and Y/n. It was odd, this unspoken thing between them, as if the space in the room was filled with something more than just casual conversation.
He cleared his throat, trying to break the silence. “I’ll grab us a drink. You good with something, Y/n?”
Y/n snapped out of her thoughts, startled by his question. “Uh, yeah, sure. Water’s fine.”
“Water it is,” he replied, the corners of his lips twitching upward.
“I will take a coke, thank you,” Theo ordered and put up his thumb.
Charles sighed and made his way to the kitchen.
As he walked away, Y/n couldn’t help but glance at him again, watching how he moved so effortlessly. It was a quiet observation, nothing too obvious, but enough to make her heart race just a little. He had become more handsome than she remembered.
“So…” Laurent entered the living room again. He fell beside his little sister on the couch and looked at her. “Welcome back, Y/n/n.” He wrapped his arm around her shoulder and hugged her briefly. “It has been empty here without you.”
Y/n smiled, the familiar warmth of her brother’s presence comforting her. “It’s still home,” she said softly, glancing around the room. Her brother bought this place just before she left for Madrid. She helped him move, but that was all.
“Gonna make sure you’re spoiled during your stay. Got all your favourites lined up, too.”
“Love that.”
“I'm sorry I couldn’t pick you up, but there was a massive accident in Menton. I just arrived back home,” he apologised, feeling bad he couldn’t keep up his promise to pick her up.
“No worries,” she smiled. “It was an… interesting pick-up party.”
Laurent raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued. “Interesting how?”
Y/n chuckled, her eyes glancing over to where Charles and Theo had settled in the room. “Let’s just say I wasn’t expecting to be picked up by an F1 driver and a…,” she paused, looking at Theo with a teasing grin, “...professional passenger.”
Theo let out a loud, exaggerated gasp. “I am not a professional passenger!” He threw his hands up dramatically. “I just prefer to let Charles take the wheel. It’s not my fault he’s too quick to get in and out of trouble.”
Charles, who had been quietly listening, snorted with laughter. “You’re one to talk. You’re just mad because I beat you in the car to Menton the other week.”
Y/n shot them both a playful look. “I’m just glad I’m still alive to tell the tale.”
Charles flashed her a grin. “See? No harm done.”
“Yeah, you say that now.” Y/n crossed her arms, smirking. “You almost gave me a heart attack. I was about to turn into an honorary member of the FIA with that kind of ride.”
Laurent, who was listening to the banter, snickered. “Things haven’t changed, I see. Still bickering like an old married couple.”
“Pff.”
“Shut up.”
“Old married couple,” Theo agreed and sipped from this drink.
Y/n rolled her eyes. “We’re not bickering. I’m just saying Charles could practice more with regular cars. Don’t think Monaco’s tight corners should be his only driving experience.”
Theo burst into laughter, slapping his knee. “Oh, she’s calling you out, Charles. You’ve been called out.”
Charles, trying to keep a straight face, replied, “Okay, okay, maybe I’ll take some tips from the passenger seat next time, just to ensure no one else gets traumatised.”
Y/n gave him a playful side-eye. “Good plan. We’ll be safer that way. I can teach you the tips and tricks.”
The moment was light and familiar—like old times when teasing each other was second nature. Still, as the laughter faded, Y/n couldn’t help but feel something shift in the room. It was subtle, but there was an undeniable weight to the space between her and Charles. Her smile softened as her eyes flicked briefly to him, and she noticed the way his gaze lingered on her before he quickly looked away, his expression unreadable.

Soundwave fic? Yes. I love him. I want him to kidnap me. What who said that
Anyway here’s a fic where tfp Soundwave kidnaps you because he likes you and you’re alone on the Nemesis with him for the first time kdsjlfjds
(Soundwave x F!Human Reader)
—————
As soon as he arrives on the ship, Soundwave transforms, shifting you from the cockpit into his hands as he does so. You make a small cry, bracing on his thumb and holding on for dear life as you wildly look around like a frightened animal.
The door behind him closing and the sunlight disappearing from its cracks only furthered your panic- Soundwave could hear the sound of your little frightened breaths, quick and shallow. It was unbearably cute.
He walks with calm, even steps through the hallways. As much as he adored your mannerisms, he didn’t want your (permanent) stay on the Nemesis to be unpleasant. He scrolls through the camera feed on his visor and finds Megatron on the bridge and heads his way.
It was quiet. Even though Soundwave had quite literally stolen you in broad daylight in front of the Autobots that could do nothing but watch him fly away with you, you still found reassurance from him. You looked up at him from time to time; furrowed brows, watery eyes. He can’t stand it. He was the only thing on this ship that was familiar to you, and so he was the only person you would seek comfort from.
A few vehicons saw him on his way to the bridge. All have balked on the sight, but they deserve credit. They were smart enough not to interfere with him, nor to question his new ‘girlfriend’.
“Commander Soundwave,” one nodded as he passed. Only someone like Soundwave could hear the slight shake in his voice.
It must be so hard for someone as small as you. Everyone and everything was so much bigger than you, even the vehicons. Even Laserbeak.
So cute…
He reaches the bridge and the doors slide open. Megatron stands ever vigilant, watching the skies.
“Soundwave. You’ve returned.” His master angles his head before fully turning around, “have you acquired the data I have asked of you?”
Soundwave nods and his screen blinks, displaying pictures of artefacts and text. Megatron’s eyes brighten and a dastardly grin widens.
“Cybertronian artefacts the humans uncovered? Excellent Soundwave. I’m surprised the humans had the forethought to store them in different places, but they won’t stay in their vaults for long…”
Coordinates show on his face of their locations, before he shows one particular artefact.
“A magnetic destabilizer. Did you retrieve it?”
His screen changes to a video of multiple army men shooting at him before the autobots arrived.
“Humans.” He sneered. “For such small creatures, their little guns can feel like scraplets when they are numerous. Even more reason to terminate these pests,”
Soundwave feels a twitch in his hand.
“Which begs the question… why have you brought one back with you?”
His liege sounded curious rather than chastising. His head dips down to where you sat. Poor thing- you were shaking now, your lips parted and gripping his finger tighter than before, unable to speak, wide-eyed staring back at Megatron.
He wraps his fingers around you in the hopes of comforting you, but it only makes you gasp in alarm, swinging your head to look back at him. You’re anxious. He pets your head and prods your cheeks for a moment before turning back to his master. To Megatron, he simply goes over pictures and footage of his encounters with you he managed to capture, then he holds you closer to his chest.
“I see…” Megatron nods. “Very well. I trust you can keep it in check. Although you were unable to retrieve the artefact, the data you brought was most valuable- we will certainly retrieve the rest. You are dismissed, Soundwave.”
Soundwave nods, and both he and Megatron turn to their next objectives; which, for Soundwave, was to have a private moment with you.
*****
Your heart is beating a mile a minute. You’re still having trouble wrapping your head around it. You were going on a human mission to meet with Fowler’s guys one moment, then taken aboard the Decepticon warship the next. And you still don’t understand why Soundwave took you in the first place, when you assume he already took all the information he needed from the unidentified objects database. Now you find out not only did Megatron not ask him to bring back a human, he specifically targeted you. What could he possibly want from you?
A door opens to an empty, barren room with a single shelf-like desk and a huge window that spans from the floor to the ceiling. Oh, and there was a bed on the desk too. Pillows, blankets, white linens and all. It looked rather plush and high quality.
So that’s what happened. You manage to think in the middle of your fear induced paralysis. Everyone had been so confused when Agent Fowler came in with the reports of Decepticon activity at a mattress store, of all places. And after a thorough checking with Ratchet, you’d found nothing else sinister has happened with mattresses. Until now, of course.
You’re placed gently on the table, far gentler than you’d expect a Decepticon to be capable of. Soundwave doesn’t look to be expecting anything from you right now, so you look around. You walk to the bed and feel the sheets; soft, slightly cold, and crisp compared to the beat up bedding you had back home. It reminds you of a hotel bed. You lift your head to look out the window: the perfect view of earth above the stratosphere. It was still day, clear from the bright blue the earth was practically glowing with- but you were so high above ground that there wasn’t enough atmosphere to scatter the light. You could even see the earth’s curvature.
The gravity of the situation, how far away you were from everything, how crazy this situation was that it didn’t feel real- it finally hits you like a ton of bricks and you were broken out of your disconnected paralysis. You were alive again. Your head feels hot, your heart is thumping, and it didn’t feel like you could breathe deeply enough. Fear and uncertainty rises in you like bile.
It’s too much.
Overwhelmed, you hiccup, and the tears start flowing.
You jump at feeling something on your side, and you’re turned around to face the one who captured you. Your hands are shaking, your lips are trembling, sobbing uncontrollably despite your attempts to hide them. You didn’t want him to see you cry, you knew Decepticons were cruel creatures. You wish you knew what he was thinking about, his emotions impossible to read considering that he’s faceless. He simply looks at you, in the silent way Soundwave always did, head tilted slightly down.
Was he judging you? Was he showing disdain? Did he think you were a pathetic, crying thing?
You couldn’t move again, with his hand bracing your back, watching his other hand approach, fingers extended. You sniffle and squeak as it gets closer but- then, very precisely for someone as enormous as he was, he wipes your tears away with his fingers.
“Huh..?”
As he caresses your head, he leans in closer, and you’re suddenly reminded of when children played with their dolls. Coddling them, playing with their hair, that unwavering stare. It makes you nervous, and you squish into his hand more trying to make space from him. You’re confronted with your own reflection in his visor, your eyes reddish and wet.
“Wh-what,” you swallow, mouth dry. “What is it that you want from me,”
Your voice was small and pitiful, shaking with the sobs that still racked your body. He tilts his head, as if he was asking isn’t it obvious?
One slender, extended finger pokes the center of your chest, on your sternum.
Static sounds from his face, and the voice you hear is yours.
“You.”
Me? What do you mean you ‘want me’?? You thought in distress. You’re not sure if that’s a good thing, or if you liked that answer.
“I still don’t… know what you mean by that. Do you want me so y-you can hurt me? Torture me? Put me through some Decepticon experiment? Wh–?!”
The last word turns into a high-pitched squeal as Soundwave lifts you off the ground and brings you close to his face. He isn’t viewing you like he did before, instead steadily bringing you closer and closer. His faceless appearance frightens you, and with alarm you feel like he’s about to squash you against his face- like he was trying to eat you, if he had a mouth. Your panicked breaths turn into a yelp, covering your face and your body seizing up.
You jolt when you feel his visor pressing to the entire side of your body, keenly aware of how much you’re trembling when you’re pressed against this wall that was his face. You kept your eyes shut, feeling him press you further into him, whimpers escaping you.
… But nothing happens. Instead, Soundwave starts moving his face against you, up and down in a rhythmic motion. It’s gentle, careful- he isn’t trying to hurt you. The pressure his hand is putting on you is only just enough to slightly squish you against him, and you feel like a plush toy with your cheek smooshed on his visor. A soft, smooth, deep sound emits from within him, strong enough that it shakes you, but low enough that it isn’t overwhelming. Like an engine revving.
Is he. Nuzzling you?
You open one eye, the other shut from the decepticon’s face rubbing. “Whuh- what’s happening,”
You try to push off his face to make room for yourself, but this only makes Soundwave press you back into his face, this time nuzzling you from left to right.
You sputter, your nose and mouth pressing against him from his motion, before he finally pulls his face away from you, his shoulders bouncing with what might’ve been laughter.
Your puzzled face was clear on his visor.
“I like you.” He says. “I like - Y/n.”
Now that really confused you. You could accept him wanting you for nefarious reasons, even for personal ones but- was Soundwave liking you the reason he took you? You can’t believe it, even as the man in question has his fingers on your cheek again, tickling you and making you close your eyes again from his obsessive petting.
You get a moment to speak when his petting finally stops. You could feel the redness and heat radiating from your cheek from where Soundwave pressed his face on you.
“S-so… you don’t want to hurt me,” you clarify. You had to make sure.
Soundwave shakes his head. “No.”
Phew. That was a relief. You were still on the Decepticon warship of course- but at least your kidnapper wasn’t here to harm you.
There were others on the ship though, who you’re sure aren’t fond of humans.
You simmer in that thought, looking away from Soundwave, who patiently waits for you to say something. You let him thumb you, stroking your hair down placatingly. You have to admit to yourself, it was working more than you thought it would.
You sigh out the heaviness in your chest, and turn back to Soundwave. You open your mouth, hesitating for a second.
“Promise,” you say, “promise you won’t hurt me? Promise you won’t let anyone hurt me,”
You knew there was no way you could really demand something from a Decepticon, your difference in size astronomical, not to mention in strength. But you hoped Soundwave liked you enough that he would honor your request.
Soundwave stares silently, it was impossible to tell what he was thinking. But you notice his head tilting imperceptibly downwards. You aren’t sure if it was a nod, or just a small movement indicating he was thinking about it.
For now, it was enough.

“Giddy up, cowboy”
Glen Powell x Fem!Reader
Content: 18+ some sexual stuff, Glen looking like a MEAL
Tumblr media
“You should wear that cowboy hat more often.”
Glen’s eyes widen in surprise at your words and you couldn’t help but smile.
“Why?” He asks. “Does it do something for you?”
“Maybe,” you tease, wrapping your arms around his neck.
He hums a response, wrapping his arms around your waist and leaning in close. His cologne and minty breath touches your nose before he whispers, “You wanna see if it’ll do something for you?”
Instantly, you feel yourself turning into a puddle. Your legs tighten and rub together to try and relieve some of the pressure and pulsing between your thighs. Glen notices instantly and lowers one hand to your bum, slapping and then squeezing it with a smirk.
“You’ll have to wait for later,” he tells you. “I’ll have you begging for me back home.”
The thought alone made your heart pound against your chest at the anticipation of Glen’s strong body over yours…behind you. It took everything in you not to excuse yourself from the football game you’d both been at attendance and let out some of your pleasure in the bathroom.
By the time the game ends, you’re so round up from the constant throbbing you barely let Glen touch you. You knew as soon as his hand meets your skin you wouldn’t have any self control.
In the car, you’re silently looking out the window and counting the street lamps that pass by. Glen’s talking about something but you’ve drowned out his deep voice.
Just a few more minutes and we’ll be home.
“Baby?” Glen asks, placing a hand on your thigh. “Are you okay?”
You pulse your thighs together, squeeze your eyes, and then turn to face him. He’s stopped at the light before turning into your neighborhood and fully looking at you with those almost pale green eyes.
“What?” You ask.
“I asked if you were okay,” he repeats, smiling and squeezing your thigh a bit.
You shudder but nod. “Mhmm, never better.”
You can practically see Glen’s heart pounding in his neck as soon as he flashes you that movie star smile of his. His eyes light up but he turns to face the light, that has now turned green.
Without another word, Glen’s hand slowly caresses your thighs moving up and under the denim skirt you’re wearing. The callouses on his hand scratch at your soft skin and sends a shiver down your spine. He only stops when his fingers brush against your already soaked underwear, a low grumble slipping from his lips.
“How long have you been this wet for?” he asks, his voice barely louder than a mumble.
“S-since the game,” you admit. You’re about to add more detail but his finger rushes up and down your slit, the words mystifying before you can even finish the thought.
“Hmm,” he hums. “You were being so patient. Weren’t you, my pretty girl?”
His fingers move faster, now rubbing your clit softly but hard, just how you like it. At the moan you let out, Glen chuckles and moves away from that spot, flicking his fingers to the bottom of your slit and back up to your clit like an expert.
And then…he stops. Stops.
“Why did you—”
“We’re home,” he tells you, pulling his hand back and smiling wickedly at you. “Let’s go.”
You didn’t have to be told twice.
You thought I’d keep going, didn’t you? 😏 don’t worry, I have another fic coming later this weekend 😘 check out my Masterlist for now! (It’s pinned)

Tumblr media
“I’m innocent your honour.”
“You was caught with the murder weapon in your hands as well as being at the scene of the crime.”
“Would you believe me if I said that I found them like that?”
Y/n was sentenced to prison for twenty five years for murdering two men, she tried to justify her actions by telling the courts that she only killed them because they were rapists but apparently it was wrong of her to take the law into her own hands, who knew?
Little did they know that she had taken the life of just over sixty rapists.
What they don’t know won’t hurt them, right?
Tumblr media
“So Y/n, when are you out of the shit hole?” Rogan asked as she sat at the table where Y/n was shuffling cards.
“Soon. Got twenty more years to go.”
“How long have you already done?”
“Five.” Looking around making sure no one heard her, she leaned further across the table to the woman. “Look RoRo first rule of prison is that you don’t ask people what they are in for or how long they are doing.”
“What really? I keep asking people.”
“It’s like pointing in cemetery, it’s disrespectful.”
“Oh… I didn’t know.”
“She’s fucking with you with.” Kandi laughed as she came over to the duo, a cigarette hanging out of her mouth.
“Not about the cemetery thing.” Pointing a card to Rogan. “Dis-respect-ful!”
Rogan had been in prison for six months, Y/n took the woman under her wing after seeing the poor girl getting harassed, everyone was quick to leave her alone. “Noted.”
“What about you? I’ve got three years left.” Kandi asked as she was pulling a card away from Y/n, just to wind her up.
“Hopefully next year.”
“NO!” Kandi laughed as Rogan jumped in her seat as Y/n screamed. “You two can’t leave me, I’ll be all alone in this big scary place!” She then throws herself onto the ground.
“L/n get off the ground!” A guard shouted, she does as she’s told and salutes the guy.
“Prick. Anyway I’m only joking, I can’t wait to see the back of you both.” Going back to shuffling her cards she looked up at Rogan. “You need to keep your head down and you might get an early release.”
They have a game of cards whilst Rogan and Kandi talked about their plans for when they get out. Kandi kicked Y/n’s leg and nodded in a direction, Rogan was confused but didn’t want to ask.
“RoRo.”
“Yeah?”
“Remember, always keep your head down.” Before the woman can answer Y/n stands up, fix her clothes and walks in the direction Kandi had nodded in.
Kandi quickly packs up the cards and shoves them into her pocket, swinging her legs over the bench. “When I tell you to get down, you do it.”
“Why? What’s happening.”
“Just watch our crazy little friend.”
Rogans eyes stay focused on Y/n as she makes her way across the yard and walks up to a woman that she knew had only arrived a few days before, with the distance between them she couldn’t hear what the two women were saying.
“Get… down.”
As the words come out of Kandi’s mouth Rogan watches as Y/n punches the woman in front of her, the two start fighting. Everyone begins to drop to the ground as the alarms started blearing, Rogan flinches when the guards start to shoot, not like Y/n stops her assaults on the woman - only stopping and throwing her hands up in the air when the other woman stops moving.
“We’ll she her in a month or two.” Kandi says quietly as the guards start rounding them all up.
Four months.
She was in solitary confinement for four months, Y/n was no stranger to the six by eight box, the warden had gotten fed up of her behaviour so he cut her yard time in half - only allowing her to have half an hour of fresh air a day.
Not like she cared.
The woman she had attacked played a role in the pain and suffering Y/n and many more had endured, she was a well respected agent who took great pleasure in hurting others especially Y/n. It was as if it was fate that the agent was being sent to the same prison as Y/n was in - not like she believed in things like that, but fate nonetheless.
“Y/n!” She only had that as a warning before Kandi jumped over the railing and landed on her. “Fuck I’ve missed you so much!”
“I’ve missed you too.” Y/n wheezed out. “But get your fat arse off me.”
“‘M not fat.”
“No but that arse of yours is.”
“Stop flirting with me, I’ll start thinking you’re in love with me.”
“We’re married…”
“Not anymore, I divorced you when you was in the hole. Sorry.”
“And there I thought you’d wait for me.” Finally standing up Y/n looked around, frowning when she couldn’t see Rogan. Asking Kandi where their friend was, she went from being happy to be back in the wing to angry.
“S-she was attacked two weeks ago, she’s in medical.”
“Who?”
“Y/n…”
“Who Kandi.”
“You’ve just gotten back.”
“I’m not going to ask again.”
Sighing and shaking her head Kandi said the name of the woman who had attacked their friend Y/n spun around in the direction of the woman’s cell. The alarms were quick to go off and the guards making their way in to the wing, an angry Y/n being dragged out.
“I’ll see you soon.” She shouted to Kandi, the latter just nods and makes her way back to her cell muttering idiot under her breath.
It’d be another four months since she’d see anyone again.
Tumblr media
Y/n tiptoed her way over to where Kandi and Rogan was sitting at their bench, the other inmates raising their eyebrows as she puts her finger to her lips. They had all grown accustomed to her weird behaviour and how quickly she can go from laughing to beating someone up.
“Give me all your money!” She screamed behind the two friends, Rogan jumped whilst Kandi didn’t flinch.
Making her way to her seat she smiled at Rogan who happily returned the expression, she looked at Kandi and noticed she wasn’t looking at her. “What’s wrong?”
Kandi whispered into Rogans ear, Rogan then looked between her two friends nervously. “She said she’s not talking to you.”
“Why? Buttercup don’t be like this.”
“She said that you’ve been gone for a long time and things have changed.”
“Changed how? Nothings changed Kands, I promise I won’t go back in the hole.”
“You said that last time! And the time before that and the time before, oh and guess-“ Kandi snapped.
“I get it. I get it okay? I’m sorry alright. I just couldn’t let Anderson get away with hurting our RoRo.”
“I know but you promise all the time Y/n, you’ve been in the hole more times than anyone here and that’s saying something.”
“I like it, kinda feels like I’m home.”
“Don’t be such a dick Y/n, I’m being serious.”
“So am I!” It was her turn to snap, smoothing out her hair she apologised. “Look I’m really sorry Kandice, I swear to you I won’t do anything to get me into trouble- no I mean it honestly!”
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
And just like that everything was fine between the pair. Kandi and Rogan told her everything that had happened in the eight months she was in solitary, which surprisingly wasn’t a lot other than a couple of fights happening.
Y/n’s left eye twitched as she stood in front of her cell. Someone had come into her place and trashed it. The whole wing went quiet as they all saw her standing there still as if she was a statue.
“Who?”
“Y/n, remember what you promised me.” Kandi said from the side of her.
“Who Kandi?”
“Y/n-“
“WHO FUCKING TRASHED MY CELL!” Everyone flinched as she shouted. She was getting angrier the longer everyone remained quiet.
“That would have been me, sweet cheeks.” The voice made her skin crawl. As she turned around she saw the guard who made it his sole mission to torment her after she turned him down.
“You-“
“Y/n, you’ve just gotten out.” Kandi hissed under her breath.
“Fucking-“
“Y/n!”
“PRICK!” His smile made her want to kill him right there and then. “But… it’s okay, I get it. No I really do.” Leaning over the railing she smiled at him. “Since catching your wife getting her brains fucked out of her by the fucking mailman - the same man she left you for, you’ve been real lonely, I hope you enjoyed my underwear around that small piece of useless skin that you call a dick.” The whole wing erupts in loud cheering - even some of the guards laughing - Y/n walked into her cell and started cleaning up.
The next morning the trio made their way to the rec room after having their breakfasts, sat at a table playing a card game Y/n caught a glimpse of a familiar face on the tv screen from the corner of her eye.
Her breathing picked up and her palms started to sweat, all she could see was so many different memories flash in front of her. It was like she was right there in the base alongside him. Memories she tried so hard to keep locked up right at the back of her mind under lock and key came flooding back. She could hear someone call her name but she couldn’t pin point where the voice was coming from or who by. Only snapping out of her memories when she felt a hand smack her across the face.
“Shit… Y/n I-I didn’t mean to do that.” Kandi stuttered, looking between Y/n and Rogan fear evident in her eyes.
“It’s-I’m okay. You smack like a girl by the way.” Chuckling nervously Kandi apologised but Y/n waved her off. “I need to get out of here.” She whispered to her two friends.
“We can go outside.” Rogan offered.
“No I mean I need to get out of prison, preferably like now.”
“What are you going to do, walk up to the warden and ask if he can let you out earlier?” Kandi laughed.
“Do you think he would?”
“No you idiot!”
“Why? I’m well behaved.” The girls in front of her raise their eyebrows in unison. “Okay maybe I’ve not been the best inmate but I can be good.”
They all knew that was a lie.
“Y/n be rational, you escape you’ll be wanted, you’ll get caught and have more years added to your sentence.”
“No because I’ll leave and then I’ll come back once I’m finished doing what I need to do.”
“You-I-Rogan deal with her.”
“I erm… Y/n you’ll be in so much trouble.”
“I’m doing twenty five years Ro, can’t get in more fucking trouble than that. Look I’ll be gone for a few days and I’ll hand myself in, they’ll probably give me an extra year or two which is nothing really. But I need your twos help.”
Kandi knew her well enough to know that she was going to escape with or without their help, despite not liking it she knew Y/n wouldn’t do anything without a reason. “Why?”
“I need to see someone. Kands I wouldn’t be doing this if it wasn’t important. So please help me.”
“Fuck. Fine, okay I’ll help you.”
“I’ll help too.” Rogan smiled.
“No, you can’t ruin your chance at an early release.”
“I’m helping.”
As Y/n watched the two girls argue about whether or not Rogan was allowed to help she came up with a plan. Gaining their attention she told them the plan, and off they went.
“This is such a bad idea.” Kandi whispered watching Y/n climb through the tiny window of the guards locker room.
“It’s a brilliant idea.”
“Just hurry up!”
“Stop distracting me!”
Finding the locker she needed, she opened it up and searched for car keys, hanging them out of the small window to Kandi she climbed out. Kandi was about to unlock the car when Y/n wrapped her arms around her.
“I’ll come back I promise.”
“Why? You could be free and have a life.”
“Like you said, I’ll be wanted and I’ll end up getting caught. Plus all I’ve ever known is a life in prisons so I won’t do good out there in the real world.” She shrugged. “I’ll see you in a few days. Oh, Kandice?”
“Yeah?”
“Thank you.”
“Be careful.”
Keeping an eye out she helped Y/n get into the boot of the car and locking it again she ran over to the window and climbed in to put the keys back, Rogan was waiting for her when she came back out and made a phone call - using the phone that Y/n asked forced someone to borrow them.
“Hi, is this Mr Boyd? I’m sorry to say this sir but your apartment has been broken into. Your neighbour rang the police. Yes. That’s fine sir.” Not even five minutes ago by when they see the guard running past their hiding spot and driving away.
“The crazy bitch has done it.” Kandi laughed, wrapping her arm around Rogans shoulder she kisses her friends head.
Tumblr media
Y/n had to bite her lip to force herself not to scream as Boyd drove like a maniac, she kept banging her head and it was starting to hurt. As the car finally pulled to a stop she slowly opened the boot door before he got out and locked her inside. Only climbing out when she figured the coast was clear, she falters when she makes eye contact with a child playing across the street - the kid waves and giggles at her. Putting her finger to her lip she smiles when the kid nods.
Hiding behind the wall she waits for Boyd to leave which wasn’t long, she breaks into his apartment. First thing she does is make herself a sandwich before sitting on the sofa, putting her feet on the coffee table and watch tv - it was nice to watch something without people talking loudly in the background. After showering she walked into his bedroom and went straight to the wardrobe in hopes there was still clothes from his wife. Luck seemed to be on her side because there was a few clothes left.
Looking at the photo of Boyd with who Y/n assumed was his parents she smiles. “You trash my place, I’ll trash yours.”
Within minutes the whole apartment was trashed. Not a single room was left unharmed by the bat she was using.
Stealing some money she found she left the apartment and made her way to the bus stop. Standing outside of the library with people walking around her not knowing who she was or the fact that she had broken out of prison, she went inside.
“Hi.” Leaning over the counter to see the name tag more clearly. “Paige, I would like to use a computer.”
“Do you have a library card?”
“I don’t I’m afraid.”
“You need a library card.”
“To use a computer?”
“Yeah.”
“But I don’t have one and I really need to use it.”
“I can give you one now.”
“I don’t want a card, okay. I’m never going to come back here so it’s pointless, I just need the computer for less than ten minutes.” Y/n had to bite her cheek in order to not shout at the poor girl who was just doing her job.
“But I’m not allowed.”
“I won’t tell if you don’t.” Paige nods and takes her over to where the computers were and used her login details, reminding Y/n that she only had ten minutes she rushed back to the desk.
She’s done within minutes.
Going back up to Paige she asks for directions which the girl offers, she thanks her and hands over twenty dollars that she stole from Boyd’s apartment. “For the computer.” She informs when the girl frowns.
The walk to her destination took longer than expected due to having to keep ducking down alleyways and into shops when the police went by, she knew the guards would have realised that she was gone by now and that there would be officers looking for her.
She had to admit the building was rather impressive.
“Excuse me miss, you need to sign in.” The man said from behind the desk.
“Oh silly me, my boyfriend told me that I could just go straight up.”
“Who’s your boyfriend?”
“Tony Stark.”
“He’s married…”
“Yeah, I’m his mistress. Don’t tell the wife though.” She winks and signs her name. “Can I go up now?”
“Y-yes miss.”
“Thank you. Oh, which button do I press? Normally he does it.” Thanking him once again she makes her way to the elevator and up she goes.
Following the voices she stood outside a room where the Avengers were sitting around laughing and talking. She sees him. She doesn’t realise that everyone sees her and stops talking.
“Who are you?” A red head said.
Taking that as her signal she walks inside, her eyes still on the man she broke out of prison just to see.
"I had to see this for myself. To know it's true.” All their heads snap to the person she was looking at.
Bucky.
“Buck… do you know who this is?” A blond man said as he sat further up in his seat.
“I-yeah, her names Y/n we were at the same base together. W-what are you doing here?”
“Like I said, I wanted to see this for myself.” A small smile on her lips, she started to pick at the skin around her nails starting to feel stupid for what she’s done because he didn’t seem too pleased to see her.
“You left me.” Bucky whispered.
“I-I know but I tried to get you out, I swear.”
“You left me there Y/n!” Before anyone could react Bucky had Y/n pinned to the wall by her throat and began squeezing. “We promised each other that we’d get out together! We promised.” His eyes filling up with tears.
“I tried James! You wouldn’t come with me.” Hearing that Bucky loosens his hold around her neck. “I got into your cell but you wouldn’t listen, I tried to get you to stand but you wouldn’t move, y-you broke my arm James. My opening was closing an-and I had to take it and I’ve regretted it every day but I did try I swear.”
His hold on her neck loosens until he’s just holding her, tears starting to fall from his pretty eyes, regret consuming him when he looks at the mark already forming on her neck, regret from hating her from the moment he found out she had left him there to rot, regret and anger at hearing he had broken her arm - hurting the one person even the Winter Soldier couldn’t hurt. “I-I-“
Y/n silences him by wrapping her arms around his neck and pulls him into her. Memories of her holding him in this way flashing through their minds as Bucky clung to her.
The only sound coming from the once lively room was Bucky’s muffled cries and Y/n apologising.
Tumblr media
“Oh by the way Tony I’m your mistress.” Y/n informed him as she pointed her fork in his direction.
“What?”
“I told the guy downstairs that I was your girlfriend and he told me you’re married. Which honestly I don’t think I can be in this relationship anymore so it’s over.” Everyone chuckles aside from Tony who’s still trying to figure out what’s going on.
“So Y/n, what have you been doing since getting away from Hydra?” Natasha asked. Bless their little hearts they tried to introduce themselves to her but she knew exactly who was who beforehand.
“I-fuck this is the best meal I’ve had in five years, thanks Sam. But anyway I was moving around a lot, may or may not have killed some agents that I knew were Hydra. So yeah not much really.”
Ever since Y/n showed up he couldn’t take his eyes off her, she looked so different yet the same, she was still the most beautiful woman he ever laid eyes on. When he was told she had escaped he felt different emotions, he was proud that she had gotten away from the horrors they were subjected too and forced to commit, he was angry that she left him behind since they had promised each other that they’d get away together and try to live a normal life - whatever that meant for the two of them. He was devastated at the fact she had left him behind, he thought that everything they had gone through together and the feelings they had for each other was all lies.
He got beaten for days after she escaped because he attacked the guards when they tried to stop him from going to her cell, he stood there at the doorway expecting to see her sitting on the wrecked mattress with a pretty smile on her face or at least her laying there with bruises after a beating but it was empty other than the mattress and disgusting toilet.
Bucky started to believe that she was dead just because he couldn’t believe that she left him on his own. For the two years he was there without his partner, his only friend, the woman who he had fallen in love with despite their surroundings he never put up a fight, he did everything they asked of him and more, he didn’t care if he died on missions - hell he wanted to die just so he could finally see Y/n again.
But here she was, sitting right next to him laughing along with his friends, looking just as beautiful as the last time he saw her. All he wanted to do was wrap his arms around her and never let go again, he wanted to kiss her just the way they use to whenever they were alone and knew that no one was watching.
“Right, well I best be off.” Y/n spoke bringing Bucky back to the present.
“W-what?”
“Yeah sorry, I’ve gotta go somewhere before I head home.”
“I’ll take you.” Everyone could hear the desperation in his voice but he didn’t care, he wasn’t ready to say goodbye to her just yet.
“I-okay. It was nice meeting everyone.”
“You can come back whenever you want.” Steve smiled, Y/n nodded her head knowing that she couldn’t but what they didn’t know wouldn’t hurt them.
Saying her goodbyes, Bucky took her down to the garage and ever the gentleman he opened the car door for her. Telling him the address of where she wanted to go, he didn’t question it just driving to the destination. He noticed that every time a police car went by that she put her head down when he asked she just shook her head and smiled at him.
He followed behind her as she searched the rows of headstones, he sees her face light up when she spots the correct one she was looking for.
Kneeling down on the damp grass she placed her hand on the thick stone. “Hey beautiful, yeah I know I’ve not seen you in five years but I couldn’t get here. I’m sorry. Oh I want you to meet someone.” Waving Bucky over, he stands by her side with his hands in his pockets looking at the name, date of birth and death. “This is James, the man I told you about. Bucky this is Evie.”
“Who is she?”
“I found her two weeks after I escaped Hydra, she was along seven other women they… they were in a sex ring. I managed to get them all out and got them to safety, I know the other girls are in protection and are now safe.”
“W-what happened to Evie?”
“The dark thoughts got too much for her, I didn’t get there in time to save her. She had taken her own life. I let her down after I promised that I would always be there.” A dry laugh falls from her mouth as she wipes a tear away. “But then again I’ve never been able to keep my promises, have I?”
“Y/n-“
“It’s true though isn’t it? I’ve got two girls back at home expecting me to keep a promise I made and I don’t want to break it but I really don’t want to go back, you know?”
“You have kids?”
“Fuck no! Jesus Bucky, me as a mum? Can you imagine? Terrible.” She laughs though her heart aches at the image of her being a mother, she wanted kids but that was before Hydra, before being sent to prison for killing the two so called men who had took it in turns to rape Evie. Don’t get it wrong, she didn’t regret doing it and would do it again in a heartbeat but she knew she could never be a mum now.
“You’ve always been caring Y/n.”
“And? That doesn’t mean-you know what? It doesn’t matter, I need to go otherwise I’m going to be in even more trouble than I already am. But it was good to see you again James, it really was. I hope you all the best.”
Bucky grabbed her free hand as her other was on the headstone. “You don’t have to go! You can stay with me at the tower an-and you could be a part of the team.”
“I’m not a hero James. Never have been, never will be. I’m the person you and your friends go after, I destroy everything.”
“No, no you’re a good person Y/n, I know you!”
Putting her hand on his cheek she shakes her head. “No you don’t.” Her face lights up very quickly when blue and red lights go by. “I’ve gotta go now James. I’m sorry I didn’t get you out, I’m sorry I wasn’t strong enough to stay there with you. I hope you all the goodness in the world.” Standing on her tiptoes she presses her lips to his in a quick kiss. “One for the road.”
Bucky stands there motionless as Y/n presses a kiss to the headstone, giving him one last smile before walking off.
The warden went bright red in the face as he shouted at Y/n. She couldn’t see what the problem was as she came back. She went back to court and her defence lawyer told the judge that she had only escaped so she could say goodbye to a dear friend, and that she had come back willingly and she didn’t run like most would.
The judge handed her an extra eighteen months to her twenty year sentence.
Kandi and Rogan saw her two months later after she came out of solitary confinement, both of them instantly wrapping their arms around her and refusing to let go.
Tumblr media
When Bucky got back to the tower that night he went straight into his room and refused to speak to anyone, he opened up the wardrobe and grabbed his backpack from the back, moving to sit on his bed. He found the dark red notepad and held it close to him, he remembered the day he got it - he was on a solo mission, as he was about to leave the office following the man that was trying to run away when a dark red notepad caught his eye, picking it up he flicked through the empty pages before putting it in one of his many pockets. Getting back to the base in the early hours of the next morning he kept it hidden along with a pencil he had stolen, once in the safety of his cell he began writing Y/n’s name over and over again, he then wrote all the little facts that he could remember from what she told him about herself. He kept the notepad with him at all times when he wasn’t on missions and when he was on ice he kept it hidden in his mattress.
Since Steve found him in that rundown apartment building and everything that followed Bucky didn’t read what was in the notepad, it was too painful for him but now that he knew she was alive he found himself reading what he wrote all those years ago.
He soon fell asleep with the notepad clutched closely to his chest.
A couple of weeks later the team were once again sitting around in the living room, when FRIDAY put the tv on and told the team they needed to watch the news.
“The prison behind me holds some of the most dangerous women in the country, one of the inmates who was sentenced to twenty five years for murdering two men escaped last month.” The reporter spoke, none of them understood why FRIDAY thought they needed to watch that was until a photo appeared on the right side of the screen. “Y/n L/n escaped and was on the run for two days, remarkably she walked back into prison and handed herself in. L/n has already served five years of her sentence when the esca-“
Steve paused the screen, all their eyes trained on the mugshot of the woman who showed up to the tower. A large smile on her face with no look of remorse behind her eyes as they took her photo. Bucky sits there and shakes his head as he remembers wondering why the meal Sam cooked was the best she had in five years, or when she mentioned that she hadn’t been to see Evie.
“Did you know?” Wanda asked him.
“No but it makes sense now though.”
“How do you mean?” Sam asked, so Bucky explains. “I wonder who she killed.”
“I don’t know but I’m going to visit her.”
Steve went with him to see Y/n but was turned away due to her being in solitary, the warden smirked as he told the pair that they could come back in two months to see her.
Tumblr media
The trio was sitting in Kandi’s cell when a guard called for Y/n, with a huff she went to see what they wanted, her eyes squinting when they said she had a visitor.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean that you have someone here to visit you.” He said sarcastically, unlocking the door so she could come out. Putting the cuffs on her wrist he gave her no time to try and walk freely as he started to pull on the cuffs. Leading her down to a visit room he pushed her inside once the door was unlocked.
“There’s no need to keep pushing me you-“
“You, what?”
“If you hadn’t interrupted me you’d know I was going to call you a cunt.”
“You’ve got a fucking mouth on you, don’t you.”
“Me? Never.” He goes to open his mouth but closes it, he just smiles at her instead and leaves the room. Turning around she raises her eyebrow at seeing Bucky and his friends on the other side of the table. “Fancy seeing you guys here, did you get lost?”
“No, we didn’t get lost.” Bucky says fiddling with him metal fingers.
“Oh, it’s just because I don’t get visitors so.” She trails off.
“Why didn’t you tell me you were in prison?”
“Didn’t think it was important.” She shrugged.
“Not important? You murdered two men!” Y/n frowned at the way Bucky raised his voice at her, hating the way he looked at her as if she was a monster.
“Two men who deserved it! They raped Evie.” She snapped, smacking her hand on the table. “I’ve never killed anyone that didn’t deserve it and you know it.”
Bucky frowns and instantly feels guilty for raising his voice. “I’m sorry.”
“Whatever. Are we done here?“
“Did you really escape just to see me?”
“Yep, stupid I know.” Before Bucky could respond Tony spoke up and asked how long had been added to her sentence. “Eighteen months, why?”
“Cap, you thinking what I’m thinking?”
“Yeah but will it work?” Y/n frowns as Steve and Tony continued to have a conversation between themselves, giving Bucky a questioning look he shrugs - not once taking his eyes off her.
“What are you two talking about?” Bucky asked them.
“Getting mouthy here out of this place.” Tony points over to Y/n, raising his eyebrow. “In the correct way.”
The door opens and before anyone could speak the guard comes in and drags Y/n out of the room saying “times up.” Bucky clenched his fists at seeing her being manhandled, Steve put his hand on his arm in hopes to calm him down - giving him a look that asked him not to do anything stupid.
A week later Y/n was told she had a visitor, with an annoyed huff she followed the guards, not even making a single comment as they tugged on the cuffs wrapped tightly around her wrist. In the week that had passed since her first visit, she couldn’t understand what Tony said - why would they want to get her out? What would they want with her? What would be the point in letting someone like her out in public when all she’s done is kill people?
Once again she’s pushed into the same room as before when she looks up she sees Bucky clenching his jaw and another man sitting next to him. “Back again?”
“This is-“
“Nick Fury, yeah I know who he is.” She cuts Bucky off. “I was currently in the middle of finding out what kind of flower I am based on my personality, so can we speed this up?”
Fury chuckles whilst nodding, pushing a folder across the table he gestures for her to sit. “You need to sign these papers.”
“What are they?”
“You sign these, you’ll be agreeing to you coming into SHIELDS custody.”
“And why would I do that?”
“Y/n you’ll be free-“ Bucky says.
“But I wouldn’t be would I?”
“Alright you won’t be in prison-“
“Yet I’ll be in a cell-“
“You won’t be.” Fury cuts in. “You’ll do the rest of your sentence under SHIELD, meaning you’ll work for us, help us stop Hydra and other organisations that are threatening to our world. Sign this and we’ll get you out of here within a few days.”
Bucky gave her a reassuring smile and an encouraging nod but she wasn’t quite sure if she wanted to sign, she’ll just be moving from one prison to another regardless of how they dress it up of what she’ll be doing for them. “Y/n?”
“I have two conditions.”
Fury sighs and rubs his eyes. “What are they?”
“Kandi and Rogan.”
“Who are they?”
“My friends, I want them out too.”
“I can’t do that Y/n.”
“Then I’m not signing.”
“Y/n they’re in prison for a reason.” Bucky tried.
“Petty crimes, the both of them. Kandi’s got three more years and Rogan can get out in a few months, it’s not hard to pull some strings.”
“They’re criminals.”
“So am I.”
Fury looks at Bucky then at Y/n. “Alright. I’ll see what I can do.”
“If they aren’t following me out of this shit hole then I’m not coming Fury.”
“You’re already the biggest pain in my backside.” He mumbled, Bucky chuckled as Y/n smiled proudly. “I’m gonna make a phone call, what’s their last names.”
Telling him their names she watched as Fury left the room leaving her alone with Bucky who had yet to take his eyes off her. She looked everywhere other than at him. He squinted his eyes at her as she tried to suppress the smile that wanted to make an appearance. She wasn’t going to back down - she knew that, Bucky knew that - but she was cracking and he knew it.
“Just give in.”
“Nope.”
“Come on, you know you want too.” She didn’t need to look at him already knowing he had a smug smile on his lips.
“Don’t know what you mean.” Bucky rolled his eyes and leaned over the table, his hand reaching out to hold hers, her eyes snapped from the stain on the wall to him. “That’s cheating.”
“You’ve never been good at that game.” He smiled softly. “If Fury can’t get your friends out of here, you’ll be an idiot not to sign these papers Y/n.”
“I can’t just leave them here, not after all we’ve been through.”
“I get it, I do but you’ll be wasting your life away.”
“Never had much of a life before anyway.” She shrugged, flipping her hands over so their fingers would link together. “I’m really sorry James.”
“For what?”
“For leaving you there, for not going back to the base earlier, for not telling you the truth about.“ she gestures to the room they were in. “Just everything. I’m sorry for everything.”
Bucky feels his heart tug at her words, he forgave her the second he laid eyes on her again after seven years without seeing her. He forgave her when she explained, so he didn’t understand why she was apologising again. “W-what do you mean when you said for not going back to the base earlier?”
“I-I found us a safe place to call home it was off grid and in the middle of nowhere, it was perfect for us. I went back to get you, I hoped that you would listen this time.” She chuckled. “I got inside and it was chaos, the agents were dropping like flies and I wasn’t even the one doing anything, but anyway I get to your cell and it was empty, an agent shot me in the chest and told me that you had gone rogue, that it was a stupid idea to send the Soldat to kill his best friend but I thought she was lying and you were killed.” The agent she was talking about was the very same one she attacked in the yard, her face dropped as she came face to face with the person she shot in the chest and left for dead.
“You-you got shot in the chest? Y/n!”
“What? I’m still alive aren’t I?”
“But how?”
“Because the thought of you still alive kept me alive.”
“Funny.”
“Hilarious.” She winked at him, once again he rolls his eyes at her. “I’m joking, I don’t know why or how I survived but I did. But anyway a week later I find the two men who hurt Evie and killed them, then got caught, got arrested and then sent here.”
Fury comes back into the room just as Bucky was about to say something. “All three of you will be released tomorrow morning as long as you sign these papers.”
“Tomorrow? But it’s sponge cake for dessert tomorrow.” She frowns, both men give her a deadpan look. “Sponge cake!”
“Well don’t sign and stay here then.”
“You was meant to say ‘don’t worry Y/n I’ll get you a sponge cake’ and I’ll then go ‘oh no it’s fine Fury’ and then you was going to say ‘no, no it’s fine, you deserve it for being the absolute best’ but no you had to ruin it.” Fury’s lips twitched and she could see that he was trying not to smile, Bucky on the other hand was having to bite his fist in order to stop himself from laughing.
“You going to sign or not?”
“The girls walk free?”
“Yes.”
“Where do I sign?”
Kandi and Rogan looked confused when their cell doors were opened and the guards told them they have five minutes to get their things, thinking they had done something wrong and were getting moved they frowned when Y/n stood in front of their cells with her own backpack slung over her shoulder.
“What’s going on?” Kandi whispered as they stood behind Y/n, her and Rogan were holding hands, both nervous about what was happening.
“Do you trust me?” Y/n asked turning around to the pair.
“Of course we do.”
“Then don’t worry.” The doors came open and they were walked towards the large gates, the warden made a comment under his breath which Y/n raised her eyebrow to him daring him to say it louder but he put his head down. Y/n stepped outside first smiling when she saw Bucky standing there with the rest of the Avengers and Fury. Frowning when she realised that the girls weren’t right behind her. “Come on.”
“What’s happening?”
“You’re free.” Both her friends frowning in confusion. “I got you out. Fly my pretty butterflies”
“Is this a joke?”
“Nope. You can stay if-“
“No! We’re coming.” They both rush out and run up to her.
“So… now what?” Y/n asked Bucky who looks at Fury.
“We go to the tower and these two need to sign some papers and then they can go and live their lives.”
“Right. Well let’s go then.”
Sam and Wanda lead the two girls towards the jet with Y/n following when Fury calls her name and holds out his hand.
“Sponge cake! Knew you loved me Nicky.”
Tumblr media
After a long hug and saying goodbye eight times Kandi and Rogan were taken to their families, leaving with a promise that they’ll see each other again.
Bucky couldn’t sit still as Y/n was in a room talking to Fury, his knee kept bouncing the longer he waited, he ran his fingers through the short strands of his hair tugging lightly in annoyance. Nearly four hours later Steve came and sat next to him, both sitting in silence - that was until Steve broke it.
“Did you love her?”
“I did. Still do I guess.” Leaning forward on his knees he looked to the side at his best friend. “Is that stupid?”
“No.” Chuckling softly, Steve leaned back in his seat. “I still love Peggy and she married someone else and had a family. It’s not stupid Buck.”
“They could never break her, you know? Even with the chair and I think that’s what drew me to her. She helped me remember things, always reminding me who I was after it was my turn in that fucking chair.” Bucky paused and wiped his hands down his face. “She told me she came back for me and this whole time I thought she was dead.”
“Buck…”
“It’s fine. I’m fine. I-I just wish things were different.”
Steve didn’t know what to say so he put a reassuring hand on his best friend back and let the silence take over once again. An hour later Y/n and Fury emerged from the room, Fury greeted the two super soldiers before leaving the three alone.
“Are you okay?” Bucky asked worriedly.
“I’m good, just had to tell Nicky Boo all my deepest darkest secrets.” She smiled although it wasn’t easy bringing up things that she had tried to keep hidden, Fury put his hand on hers when it started to shake as she told him the things she had done.
“Nicky Boo?” Steve questioned, amusement lacing his voice and face.
“Yeah, but I don’t think he likes his new nickname.” She shrugs, laughing along with the two men.
“Right well I’ll let you two catch up. Welcome to the team Y/n.”
“Thanks Steve.” As the blond walks away Bucky once again couldn’t take his eyes off her, and like last time Y/n looked everywhere other than him.
“You really have a staring problem.” She mumbled.
“I’m scared.” Bucky whispered, his hand reaching out to hold hers.
“Why?”
“Because if I look away I’m scared you’ll disappear and this is all a dream.”
Squeezing his hand Y/n steps closer and puts her hand on his chest, feeling his heart beating steadily. “It’s not a dream Bucky. I’m right here, I promise I’m not going to disappear.”
Bucky sighed a breath of relief at her words, putting his forehead against hers he closed his eyes. “I missed you so much.”
“I missed you too, and I’m still so sor-“ She goes to apologise again but Bucky didn’t want to hear it, so he kissed her. Both of them sighing softly as their lips finally touched after so long.
Slowly opening his eyes Bucky smiled. “It’s not a dream.”
“How’d you know?”
“Because normally I wake up just before we kiss.”
“Aw you’ve been dreaming of me?”
“Shut up.”
Y/n burst out laughing as his cheeks turned red, he rolled his eyes before pulling her closer to him and kissing her more passionately than before. Neither one of them knew really what was in store for them but they didn’t care about that, not now that they were back in each other’s arms.

angst prompt #34: "you made me believe in us."
the car ride home is quiet—too quiet.
seungcheol’s knuckles are white where they grip the steering wheel, his jaw set tight, and his eyes fixed on the road ahead. you sneak a glance at him, your heart sinking at the tension radiating off him in waves.
“cheol?” you ask tentatively, your voice soft. “what’s wrong?”
he doesn’t answer, his lips pressed into a thin line.
the silence stretches on, and the pit in your stomach grows heavier. you know something’s bothering him—he’s never been good at hiding his feelings—but no matter how much you try to reach out, he keeps shutting you down.
by the time you both get home, the air between you is thick with unspoken words. he walks in ahead of you, kicking off his shoes and heading straight for the kitchen without so much as a glance in your direction.
“cheol,” you call out again, following him. “seriously, what’s going on? you’ve been like this all night.”
he doesn’t respond, just pours himself a glass of water and leans against the counter, staring into the sink.
“okay, fine,” you say, crossing your arms and leaning against the doorway. “if you’re not going to talk to me, then at least tell me what i did to piss you off.”
his head snaps up at that, and for a moment, you see something raw in his eyes before he quickly looks away.
“it doesn’t matter,” he mutters, his voice clipped.
“it does matter,” you insist, stepping closer. “cheol, if i did something wrong, just tell me.”
he slams the glass down on the counter, the sound sharp and jarring in the quiet room.
“fine,” he snaps, his voice rising. “you want to know what’s wrong? it’s you. it’s the way you spent the entire night talking to that guy like i wasn’t even there.”
you blink, caught off guard by the anger in his voice. “what are you talking about? he’s just a coworker—”
“i know that,” he interrupts, running a hand through his hair in frustration. “but do you have any idea how it felt? sitting there, watching you laugh and talk with him like... like i didn’t even exist?”
you open your mouth to respond but hesitate, unsure of what to say. his words cut deeper than you expected, and you can feel the weight of his emotions pressing down on you.
“why do you even care, cheol?” you ask finally, your voice shaking. “you’re not even my boyfriend.”
the words hang in the air, sharp and cold.
seungcheol freezes, his expression crumbling as the tension in his shoulders collapses. he stares at you like you’ve just slapped him in the face, and the silence that follows is deafening.
“cheol,” you whisper, closing your eyes as regret over your words quickly settles in you. but seungcheol doesnt move or say anything. though the words are true; you didn't mean to hurt him.
“you made me believe in us,” he says softly, his voice breaking.
his words hit you like a punch to the chest, leaving you breathless.
“what— what do you mean?” you ask, your voice barely above a whisper.
he laughs bitterly, shaking his head as he stares down at the floor. “you made me believe that there could be something here, that this wasn’t just... whatever this is. and stupidly, i let myself hope for more. but clearly, i was wrong.”
the raw vulnerability in his voice makes your heart ache, and for a moment, you can’t find the words to respond.
“cheol,” you say finally, stepping closer. “i didn’t mean it like that. i just... i didn’t know you felt this way.” guilt, heartache and panic sizzles in your blood.
he looks up at you, his eyes shining with unshed tears. “how could i not? do you have any idea how much you mean to me? how much i care about you? and yet, i’ve been sitting here, pretending like this is enough when it’s not. it’s not enough for me anymore.”
your breath catches in your throat, and you feel tears prick at the corners of your eyes.
he shakes his head, his lips curling into a sad smile. “maybe i should’ve said something sooner. but now... i don’t know. maybe this was a mistake. i shouldnt—.... maybe i shouldnt have fallen in love.”
for a moment, you’re both frozen in place, the weight of his confession settling over you. has he always felt this way? were you too busy keeping your feelings at bay that you failed to notice his feelings?
you don’t know what to say, every thought in your head scattering as his confession hangs in the air. seungcheol runs a hand down his face, taking a shaky breath as he steps away from you, heading toward the door.
“i’m going to stay at jeonghan’s tonight,” he mutters, his voice strained & cracks. “i can’t do this right now.”
“wait,” you call out, panic rising in your chest. you grab his arm before he can leave, holding on tightly. "don't go, cheol, please."
he turns to look at you, his eyes glassy and filled with pain. “why? so i can keep pretending this doesn’t hurt? so i can keep playing this game where i feel like i mean something to you when i don’t?”
“you do,” you blurt out, your voice trembling as your chest tightens, “you mean everything to me, cheol.”
his breath hitches, and for a moment, he just stares at you, as if trying to figure out if you really mean it.
before you can lose your nerve, you step closer, cupping his face in your hands. “i don’t want you to leave,” you whisper, your voice shaking. “i cant—... just, i can't lose you.”
the tension between you snaps like a rubber band, and suddenly, you’re pulling him down into a kiss. it’s desperate and messy, filled with all the emotions you’ve been holding back for so long.
seungcheol freezes for a split second before he melts into you, his arms wrapping around your waist as he kisses you back just as fervently.
when you finally pull away, both of you are breathless, his forehead resting against yours.
“do you mean it?” he asks, his voice barely above a whisper. “are you really saying you want this—want us?”
you nod, tears streaming down your face. you don't know how else to reassure seungcheol that you feel the same, that you want the same, that you want him, all of him. your voice; still shaking, still trembling with nerves over all your unsaid feelings; you say the one thing you're sure will get him to finally understand, "I love you, cheol, i love you, i love you so please,"
the sound of your sniffling and light hiccups fills in the gentle, comforting silence that settles over the both of you as seungcheol's eyes searched yours. then, a shaky laugh finally escapes him when he sees it, when he sees the fondness in your eyes. his hand reaches up to wipe your tears away and he pulls you into a tight hug, burying his face in your shoulder as he lets out a deep breath. “god, you don’t know how long i’ve been waiting to hear that.”
you cling to him, your heart feeling lighter than it has in weeks. “i’m sorry it took me so long.” you mumbled through your tears.
he pulls back just enough to look at you, his hands cupping your face as he presses a soft kiss to your forehead. “you’re worth the wait,” he says, as he leans down to kiss your forehead. his voice filled with so much love it makes your chest ache.
you smile, your tears finally slowing as you lean into his touch. “so... does this mean you’re staying?”
he chuckles, nodding as he kisses you again, this time slow and sweet. “i’m not going anywhere, pretty."

baby fever // alexia putellas
a/n : maybe it’s because i’m ovulating, but i feel like im having withdrawals from my child (i don’t have a child)
warnings : none!!
“Alexia,” you said, flopping onto the couch dramatically, your phone clutched in one hand. “Look at this baby. Look. Isn’t this proof we should have one?”
She glanced up from her iPad, one brow raised. “That’s the fifth baby you’ve shown me today.”
“Because they’re soooo cute! And we could have one!” You shoved the phone under her nose, showing her a TikTok of a giggling infant in a tiny onesie. “Imagine our baby. They’d have your eyes, my—”
Alexia cut you off with an amused smirk. “We’ve talked about this, cariño.”
“No, you’ve talked about logistics,” you shot back, sitting cross-legged beside her. “I’ve talked about how I want a baby, like, yesterday.”
She sighed, setting the iPad down. “I’m not saying no. I’m saying it’s a big decision. And with everything we have going on—your work, my schedule—it’s not the right time.”
“Then I’ll carry!” you declared, your voice rising with excitement. “You can keep playing, and I’ll do all the hard parts. It’s perfect!”
Alexia blinked at you, her eyes narrowing slightly. “You’ve… really thought about this, haven’t you?”
“For months,” you said earnestly, grabbing her hand. “I don’t care about logistics or timing. I just know I want to do this with you.”
Her gaze softened, but there was still hesitation. “I’m not against it, amor. I just want to make sure we’re ready. Both of us.”
You groaned, flopping backward into her lap. “If you won’t listen to me, I’ll get backup.”
Alexia frowned. “What does that mean?”
————————
It meant enlisting Mapi and Ingrid.
“Finally!” Mapi said when you brought up your idea at training. She threw her hands in the air dramatically. “I’ve been telling Alexia for years she needs to let loose a little. Having a baby is perfect.”
“Right?” you said, clutching Mapi’s arm. “Imagine her as a mamá. So nurturing, so responsible—”
“And terrifying,” Mapi added, smirking. “Disciplining kids with that captain energy? Iconic.”
Ingrid chimed in from beside her. “Honestly, we’re on board. Do it, and we’ll be the godparents.”
“You’d have to fight Mariona for it,” you teased.
Mapi scoffed, draping an arm over Ingrid’s shoulder. “Please. I’m already the cool tía. It’s a done deal.”
Ingrid smiled softly, giving you a nudge. “Besides, we think you’re for perfect carrying the baby. You’re already glowing just talking about it.”
“You get it,” you said dramatically, pointing at Ingrid like she’d solved world hunger. “Why can’t Alexia see it?”
“Oh, she does,” Mapi said knowingly. “She’s just pretending to be logical about it. She’ll come around. Trust me.”
—————————
The breakthrough came at a team barbecue, thanks to Ingrid and Mapi’s nephew, little Liam, who’d stolen your heart the moment you met him.
“You’re so perfect,” you cooed, holding him close as he gurgled in your arms. “The cutest baby ever.”
Across the yard, Alexia watched you from a distance. Mapi elbowed her lightly, smirking. “You’re staring, capi. You look like you’re about to cry.”
“I’m not crying,” Alexia muttered, though her gaze softened as she watched you bounce Liam gently.
“You’re thinking about it, though,” Ingrid said, stepping up beside them.
Alexia sighed. “It’s not that I don’t want to. I just—”
“You’re overthinking,” Mapi interrupted. “Classic Alexia. Look, you’re already a leader. A protector. It’s who you are. Being a mom? You’d be incredible. And (Y/N)? She’s ready. You can see it in her face.”
Alexia didn’t answer, but her thoughtful expression spoke volumes.
Later, as you cradled Liam, Alexia finally approached.
“Look at him,” you said, smiling as Liam giggled and reached for her. “He’s perfect. And soon, he’ll have a little friend. Isn’t that right, Ale?”
Alexia raised a brow. “What?”
“Our baby!” you explained, beaming. “He’s gonna have a friend, and they’ll grow up together, and it’ll be so cute.”
Alexia reached out hesitantly, letting Liam grab her finger. She froze, visibly melting at the tiny hand gripping hers. Mapi and Ingrid exchanged smug looks from across the yard.
Alexia sighed, her voice quiet. “You’re really not letting this go, are you?”
“Not a chance,” you said, grinning. “Come on, Ale. Let’s do it. I’ll carry, you’ll be the hot football mum, and Mapi and Ingrid are already fighting to be the godparents.”
“We’re winning,” Mapi called from nearby, raising a beer.
Alexia laughed softly, shaking her head. “Fine.”
Your eyes widened. “Wait. Fine?”
“Yes,” she said, smiling at your stunned expression. “But we’re doing this properly. No rushing.”
“Whatever you say, mamá,” you teased, setting Liam in his stroller before throwing your arms around her. “Let’s go make a baby!”
“That’s… not how it works,” she said, pulling back slightly.
“Oh, right,” you said, blushing. “I knew that.”
Her laughter was warm as she leaned in, pressing a soft kiss to your lips. “I can’t wait to see you glowing, amor. And for the record… Mapi and Ingrid are not automatically the godparents.”
“We’ll see about that!” Mapi shouted, earning another laugh from both of you.
As Alexia’s hand rested gently on your stomach, you knew everything was about to change. But for the first time, it felt like a change you were both ready for.

You’re hanging out with your friends at a café, and, as usual, Vernon is sitting at a corner table, a frown fixed on his face. His arms are crossed, his eyes barely leaving the book he's reading, and his presence is just… intense. You know the drill—no one dares to approach him unless absolutely necessary.
Your friends chatter away, but their eyes keep flicking toward Vernon, trying to gauge the seriousness of his aura. You can practically hear them whispering:
"Does he even smile? He looks like he's plotting something dark."
"I bet he has some secret double life where he's a villain or something."
You roll your eyes, amused by the misconception. Sure, Vernon has this reputation of being the "grumpy cat". The guy who scowls at anyone who dares to speak to him but you know the real Vernon. The one who’s soft, playful, and okay, maybe a little too clingy when you're alone.
You sip your coffee, trying not to laugh at the thought of what they would say if they knew. They think Vernon is all sharp edges and cool indifference, but when it’s just the two of you? He’s a total golden retriever.
Later, the café empties out, and it’s just you and Vernon. You lean against the table, watching him flick through his book, clearly trying to seem like he's deep in thought.
"You know, you should really smile once in a while. People are starting to think you're some kind of cold-hearted villain."
He grunts in response, his eyes not leaving the pages "I don’t need to impress anyone. Why pretend to be something I’m not?"
You can feel the smile tugging at your lips. If only they knew how dramatically different he was when no one else was around. Just the other night, he’d insisted on cooking you dinner and then gotten mad at the TV when you laughed at a cooking show he didn’t even like.
And the way his voice softens when he talks to you? Don’t even get you started.
"Mhm, sure. Just make sure no one sees you with your 'scary' persona, or they'll think you’re a supervillain." you tease him, a playful smile on your face
Vernon finally looks up at you, raising an eyebrow.
"You do realize you're the only one who gets to see me not acting like a 'villain,' right?"
You grin, taking a casual sip from your drink.
"Yeah, lucky me."
Fast forward to a few days later. You're out with Vernon and a few friends, walking through the park when you trip over a crack in the pavement. It's not that big of a fall, but you scrape your knee, and it stings just a little.
No one notices at first—except Vernon. His eyes snap to you, and you can see the panic flicker across his face.
Before you can even fully recover from the stumble, he’s already by your side, crouching down with an expression that can only be described as dramatic concern.
"Oh my god, are you okay?! Did you hurt yourself?"
You blink, slightly surprised at how intense he’s reacting. He’s usually so calm in public, but now his eyes are wide, his hand hovering near your knee like he’s afraid even the slightest touch might cause more harm.
"It’s just a scrape, Vernon. I’m fine." you stutter, still surprised by his actions
He shakes his head vigorously, ignoring your reassurances, his face completely serious.
"No. You’re not. You're bleeding, and... you’re my responsibility!"
You blink at him wide eyed, "It’s really just a small scratch. It's not like—"
"Small?!" He looks at the tiniest red mark like it’s an open wound that could be fatal. His voice grows louder. "You’re going to need a bandage! I’ll—I'll carry you home!"
You can’t help but laugh at how over the top he’s being. The guy who looks like he’s plotting world domination in front of others is now losing it over a scraped knee. But he doesn’t seem to find it funny at all.
"Do not laugh! You’re injured, and this is serious business." he scolds you, already helping you up still chuckling, as he holds out his arms like he’s ready to scoop you up at any moment.
"I don’t need you to carry me, Vernon. I can walk." you assure him
"I insist."
He’s so dramatic about it that it almost seems like he’s going to faint from the sheer concern he’s radiating.
"Is he seriously offering to carry you?" Dino asks, watching the whole scene
“What the hell is happening?" Seungkwan mumbles
You hear your friends muttering from the sidelines, their voices full of surprise, and you can’t help but smirk. This is the first time they’ve seen Vernon act this way, and they’re all shook by it.
"Vernon, seriously. I’m fine!"
But he’s already kneeling in front of you, looking up at you with wide, concerned eyes, ready to scoop you up into his arms like you're the most fragile thing in the world.
"Nope. I’m not risking it. Let’s go home. You need rest, and I need to make sure you’re not going to pass out or something."
You can’t hold back your laughter anymore."You're impossible."
"I’m just trying to keep you safe."
You finally let him win, letting him gently lift you as if you’re the most precious thing in the world, completely ignoring the curious stares from everyone else around. And despite how embarrassing this all is, you can’t deny it. You love how much Vernon cares about you. The "grumpy cat" persona is a total act.
You lean your head on his chest, feeling the warmth of his embrace.
"You know, I’ve never seen this side of you before."
"Good. Keep it that way. I’m only like this for you, got it?" voice full of seriousness
"Got it."
And in that moment, you realize, as much as Vernon tries to hide it from the world, he’s completely smitten with you—and you wouldn't have it any other way.

cw: mentions of fishing and non-violent methods of killing fish. reader is described as smaller/shorter than law and is wearing a dress. trafalgar law x fisherman f!reader. | word count: 1k, reading time: approx. 4 min.
takes place in the shifting sands verse
Tumblr media
It’s a clear, cloudless morning above your island home.
You’ve risen before the sun, as always. You’ve made your way to the beach, as always. You’ve packed your nets and your knives yet there’s one thing you could not have prepared to bring with you in your wildest dreams.
Trafalgar Law, the mysterious man you seem to keep bumping into no matter how hard you try to avoid him. He was walking the beach with his hands in his pockets when you arrived this morning. Briefly, you contemplated pretending you didn’t see him at all but it goes against your nature to not at least be friendly so you asked him to join expecting a no.
To your surprise, he shrugged his shoulders and gave you an unexpected “why not?”.
Now you’ve set out, two people in one small boat. The waves cause the boat to rock although it’s a gentler motion than the last few weeks have given you. Two weeks ago a monsoon blew through, a week after the lingering winds were nearly too strong to come out at all.
At least you have a second body to weigh your boat down in case a rogue wind does appear.
“Don’t you have somewhere to be?”
You pose the question lightly, chin digging into your shoulder while you turn your head to look at him. Each time the wooden boat bobs, your body moves in like. Hips shift and feet widen to shoulder width apart on their own after years spent braving these very waters, your beloved lucky net dangling from your forearms.
The sunrise casts just enough light over him that you can make out the faintest hint of a smile. At least you think that’s what you see before you look away, narrowing your eyes to look across the horizon.
“Nope.”
Sunlight catches the rippling waters, making them sparkle. With a content sigh, you peek over your shoulder again to steal one more glance at him. That smile you imagined still remains. The corners of his lips are upturned just enough that the untrained eye may miss them but not you, ever astute and fixated on every move he makes.
“Then at least keep quiet and don’t distract me,” you tut.
He rolls his eyes and shifts his position. Long legs are spread wide, feet planted firmly on the ground below him. His fingers are linked to make his hands into a singular fist that rests in the open space. You steal a glance at his forearms, bare as they are, but your bravery leaves and you don’t linger for long.
“I’m not the one taking their own sweet time here.”
It’s difficult to argue against the truth. Laughing, you turn back toward the water and finally toss your net. The boat rocks stronger than the waves for a moment, slightly disrupting your stance and Law’s hand makes its way to the small of your back. Long, tattooed fingers spread across the linen dress you’re wearing to cover up your bathing suit, sliding from your back to hip to keep you steady.
“I can handle myself.”
The reminder that instinctively leaves your lips makes him smile though you don’t see it, keeping your face forward lest he make out the surprised expression on your face. This isn’t the first time he’s touched you but this is the most intimate, far more so than popping and replacing stitches in the meticulously kept medical ward aboard Polar Tang.
Before you can further contemplate the weight of his fingers so close to your skin, your hips, the curving swell of your backside, your net pulls and you lean forward to reel it in. He leans with you, those long arms and tall stature coming in handy in situations like this, your back cradled by his palm while you bend over. He continues to sit with his legs spread and his feet planted just as firmly as they’ve been, watching you quickly pull the sopping wet fibers into the boat. Fish flop halfheartedly through the weave and you grin excitedly, looking behind you.
For the first time you see the position he’s in, looking up at you with that dark hair blowing around his face. The breath you were taking catches in your throat and you attempt to swallow it, knitting your brows together. The length of his arm still holds you upward, fingers digging into your dress.
“You alright?”
It feels like a loaded question but you answer it with a nod, looking away to gain some composure.
“Yeah, yeah, sorry,” you mumble and mutter under your breath, bending your knees to squat. The new position finally forces him to drop his hand and lets it dangle while he rests his forearm across his knee. “Thought I saw another boat in the distance.”
It’s not a good lie and both of you know it. Law watched your body shift completely, your face change, your eyes dance across him. What your mouth won’t give away the rest of you always does and he picked up on it early.
Saying one thing, doing another. Always, always, always.
“Thanks for keeping me steady.”
Now you’re just saying one thing and meaning another. Fortunately he picks up on the thing you won’t say.
Thank you for touching me. For caring enough to do it gently, to protect me.
“Work on your sea legs and I won’t have to,” he shoots back, raising his eyebrows and groaning while he stretches out.
Laughing, you begin untangling the flopping fish from their captivity to inspect them. The smaller ones are tossed right back out amongst the shimmering seas. The larger ones are stunned using the ice pick that rattles across the floorboards each time the boat shifts while you mentally say a little prayer, thanking the sea and whatever created these gifts for giving them to you.
“Don’t overestimate your importance, doctor.”
You don’t look at him when you say it but he can feel the amusement. His mind can easily conjure the curve of your cheek. He shakes his head, folding his arms over his chest and his feet one over the other, extending them and letting his boots rest next to where your left foot is placed.
Each of your soles, his and yours, nearly touch.

Listen the ‘Bruce brought dick in to stop him killing Zucco” is fun
You know what’s more fun
The fact that Dick Grayson is the fundamental opposite of Jokers one bad day
Because he was 9 and insane
Jokers “all it takes is one bad day” meet Dick Grayson also terminally insane but in the opposite direction.
(“I had a bad day not a fan, it’s illegal now”
“Chum murder is already illegal”
“Yeah in the eyes of the law, but who follows that! I’ve decided it’s illegal for people to have bad days”
“You have to follow laws Dick. You have to”
“Says the man getting shot at by the cops bc he dresses as a giant bat monster and fights crime using ancient martial arts”
“Hnnng”
“Anyway it’s illegal now, people suffering I have decided and I’m adorable so what I say goes!”
Bruce pinching bridge of nose “Dick you can’t save everyone and change every person you meets life”
“How about! No!”
“Di-“
“Great talk Bruce! Bye bye now!”)
Like when I say Dick Grayson was the crazy Robin I don’t mean he was aggressive or cruel
No I mean this man would not be out of place in Lewis Carol’s Alice in wonderland.
He’d see all the insane shit in Gotham and go ‘that makes perfect sense’ and continue on his merry way
Like he’s the type of kid who when he’s mad at Bruce for sidelining him on a fight against the joker (and making him fight Harley)
Will pull out a chessboard, grab Harley Quinn and go “I win, you get arkhamed you win we fight”
“Kid-“
“I have a gymnastics competition coming up and I wanna show up this douche in my class- you are not breaking my legs before then. Sit down. Play chess”
“Shit kid why didncha say so”
Why does he wanna fight the Joker who will objectively injure him far more throughly
“Well it’s simple math, I grew up in a circus, I like clowns, he is the biggest disgrace to clownery I’ve ever seen bet he didn’t even go to clown college. Doesn’t even have any iconic makeup, he just has toxic waste skin?? Like not even eye makeup or a red nose?? If you wanna do thematic crime do it right? Anyway it’s my legal obligation to try at any given moment to reck the embarrassment to all things goofy and funs shit.”
—————
Bruce looking for his 9 year old ward who was kidnapped as Robin
Dick hanging upside down on semi sentient vine gesturing wildly at poison Ivy who is nodding empathically
“And the water here is not normal!! Like how do you grow plants! I used to have to take care of plants all the time and now if I water them they rot! Like right in front of me!!? And I feel so bad but?? It’s water?? Please drink it?? Mr plant”
“Oh yeah it’s because of all the toxic ace chemicals in the water, you have to triple filter it. Honestly Robin I’m disappointed, your plants should be drinking the same water as you”
“ they do tho!”
“You…drink Gotham tap water? Batman lets you drink Gotham tap water?”
“Well no… he always tells me to use the filter but I like the tap water!! Sometimes it’s fun colors and spicy”
“oh… oh that explains so much about you..”
“No he just came like that.”
“Oh HI B I was asking miss Dr.ivy why my plants keep dying”
“Robin don’t consort with villains”
“Miss Dr. Ivy you’re a doctor right”
Poison Ivy who is violently amused “PHD not MD but yeah I am”
“So you’re smart”
“Yeasss”
“Cool!…. What does consort mean?”
————-
Annoys the riddler by going with the most out of pocket technically true answer
Think “a sparrow with a shotgun”
———-
Makes the Jokers goons laugh, louder than the joker. Even while under threats of death by sufficiently wacky murder plot

TECH
Tech, even for all his difficulty deciphering traditional displays of emotions, can feel the ire rolling off of his brother in waves. “I do not understand why you are angry with me,” he admits, trying to match pace with the cadet who seems determined to stay several steps ahead.
“It wasn’t your fight, Tech,” Crosshair snaps.
“Your fight is always my fight,” Tech argues. “We are a squad.”
“You are a di’kut!” Crosshair groans, putting his hands to his head and grabbing fistfuls of pale hair. “Hunter is going to kill me.”
“Why?”
“Because I can’t keep my mouth shut, can I? And now look at you!”
Tech has no ability to look at himself as directed; however, he is aware that he does not look as he did when he and Crosshair left the barracks. He is trying to ignore the obvious crack in the right lens of his goggles, and his injuries likely match Crosshair’s: bruises, swelling, and split skin now covered in bacta patches. The Kaminoan medics had not been pleased when the trainers brought in an entire class of cadets.
“We will tell him it was my fault,” Tech says.
Crosshair stops walking, grabbing Tech’s arm to make him stop too. “Why would we do that?”
“It isn’t entirely a lie,” Tech tells him. “After all, you only said what you said because of me.”
“Stop trying to save me, Tech.” Crosshair shoves him. “You don’t always have to be the hero.”
Tech stares at him. “What?”
“I made my choice,” Crosshair hisses, shoving him again, hard. “You shouldn’t have to pay for it.”
“Why are you doing this?” Tech asks. “Why are you pushing me away? Why won’t you let me help you?”
Crosshair lunges forward, catching the front of Tech’s uniform shirt in his fists, pulling him close, and snarls, “I didn’t ask for your help. I told you to run. Plan 88. Did you hear me? Plan 88!”
“Plan 88? What is Plan 88?” Tech tries to pull away, prying at Crosshair’s grip with shaking fingers, frightened by the sheer hatred in his brother’s voice. He’s never been scared of Crosshair. Not until…
And then Crosshair isn’t a cadet anymore. He is in the Empire’s armor. The Empire. Order 66.
“Crosshair,” Tech gasps out, and he wraps his desperate, trembling fingers around his brother’s wrists instead. “We’re coming for you. We’re coming!”
“I didn’t ask you to,” Crosshair reiterates, but some of the hatred has leaked out. “I didn’t ask you to die.”
“I’m not dead,” Tech tells him.
Crosshair tips his head. “You look dead to us.”
Tumblr media
Tech wakes gasping for breath, Crosshair’s voice raw and sharp still echoing in his ears. He moves to sit up, and while his entire body protests the movement, he doesn’t care. The pain means that he is awake. That he is alive. That he isn’t dead.
You look dead to us.
“Tech?” Kandria is standing a few meters away from him, her arms wrapped around a bundle. “Are you alright?”
“I’m fine,” he tells her, but his voice betrays him. He swallows and glares down at his hands still trembling in his lap.
“Okay,” Kandria says. She steps closer. “I brought you some clothes. Real clothes, that is.” She sets the stack on the cot beside him and lifts the top article. She holds it reverently, her thumbs brushing over the heavy, knitted material. “This sweater was my father’s.”
“Thank you,” he tells her, and he hopes she can hear the depth of his sincerity.
“Do you need help?” she asks, replacing the sweater to the stack.
“I think I can manage,” Tech says, offering a thin smile.
Kandria nods. “I’ll come back in a few minutes then with your breakfast. And Uncle Garo wants me to make a list of the parts you’ll need to build a transmitter radio.”
“Excellent. Thank you, Miss Kandria.”
The use of her name seems to surprise her, and she grins. “You’re welcome, Tech.”
He waits until she has left the room before attempting further movement. He examines the clothing. The trousers look like they will be too wide and too short; however, they are in far better shape than his blacks. The sweater is softer than he anticipated. It is mostly dark blue, but the collar, cuffs and hem are edged in an earthy yellow design.
It takes him far longer to change than he would like, and it makes him realize just how far he will need to come in his recovery before he is in any position of escaping himself, let alone with the girl in tow. He knows that he will not be allowed to freely make contact with his brothers, let alone simply leave.
There is a tentative knock.
“I am done,” Tech calls out.
The door slides open and Kandria comes in with a flimsi notebook and a bowl of something that somehow smells both savory and sweet. He is sitting on the edge of the cot, and Kandria sits next to him, handing Tech the bowl.
“It’s porridge,” she tells him, then whispers, “My own special recipe.”
Tech takes a tentative bite and is pleasantly impressed. “It is surprisingly good.”
“Thanks,” Kandria says, smiling.
Tech continues to eat while Kandria draws little doodles on the edges of the flimsi.
“Crosshair is your brother with enhanced eyesight, isn’t he?” she asks suddenly.
Tech nearly chokes on the bite he was swallowing. “Pardon?” he asks, although he knows exactly what she said; he just needs a moment to compose himself.
“You said his name in your sleep,” Kandria explains. “You sounded so sad. Did something happen to him too?”
“Too?” Tech echoes.
“Well, something happened to you,” Kandria says, as though it is obvious.
And it is.
“Oh,” Tech says.
“You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to,” Kandria tells him gently. “I just know sometimes it helps to talk about things when you’re sad. But not always.”
Tech stirs at the remnant remains of his porridge. “Crosshair is a prisoner of the Empire. We were trying to get information as to his location when…when I fell.”
“Your other family was with you?” Kandria asks.
Tech nods, because the words catch in his throat.
“So they think you are dead.” It isn’t a question. There is no question. Who could survive such a fall? Tech isn’t even sure how it is possible…and he was there…is here…
You look dead to us.
“I’m sorry,” Kandria whispers.
Tech clears his throat. “I will not be lost forever, and neither will Crosshair,” he tells her firmly, because verbalizing it might somehow make it true.
Kandria nods, and there is a certainty to the action that Tech appreciates deeply. He wants to tell her that he intends to take her with him, that he will not leave her behind; however, he isn’t yet sure how she would take such information, if it would be well received. She is not safe here, and her uncle does not deserve to have her in his care. It is in her best interest that she be rescued. Victims don’t always realize.
“I suppose we’d better get started on this transmitter then,” Kandria says.
Tumblr media
KANDRIA
“Why don’t clones have normal names?”
Jaunt laughs. “What’re you talkin’ about, kid? You saying my name ain’t normal?”
“Yes,” Kandria tells him unabashedly.
“Rude,” Jaunt huffs, but the grin on his face tells her that he isn’t actually mad. She doesn’t think she’s ever seen him mad. “You know, my name wasn’t always Jaunt. We used to have to go by our CT numbers. Still do on official documents and all that; however, unlike you natborns, we get to choose our names…or at least get given a name by our brothers that matches our charming personalities.”
Kandria smiles. “Did you pick your name?”
“Nope! It was given to me by one of my batchmates. We did a training exercise where we had to go on a thirty-six standard hour hike off-world. Afterwards, I said, sarcastically of course, ‘Well, that was a nice little jaunt.’” Jaunt uses both hands to indicate himself. “And just like that, my name was born.”
“Do you like your name?”
“Not at first. I was hoping for something more hardcore like Droid Slayer…but it’s grown on me.”
“What name would you give me, if I were a clone?” Kandria asks.
Jaunt stops walking to look down at her thoughtfully. “You want a clone name?”
Kandria nods eagerly.
“Well, then, you’ll have to earn it,” Jaunt tells her, then turns on his heel and continues on his patrol.
Kandria gapes after him for a moment before jogging to catch up. “How?”
Jaunt shrugs. “I don’t make the rules, kiddo, I just follow them.”
“Will you tell me when I earn it?”
“‘Course I will. You can bet your bottom credit I’ll have a clone name picked for you by the end of the war.”
Kandria grins and wonders what her clone name will be.
Tumblr media
“Can you tell me about your name?” Kandria asks.
Tech does not look up from the wire he is stripping. “What do you mean?”
Kandria hesitates, then rephrases her question. “Did you pick your name or did your brothers?”
“Ah,” Tech says. “Our names more or less identify with our enhancements. They are rather obvious.”
“Oh.” Disappointed by the short answer, Kandria continues stripping her own wire, carefully following Tech’s example.
Tech hums thoughtfully. “You seem well acquainted with clone culture.”
“I was friends with a clone trooper,” Kandria says. “He told me a lot.”
“What was his name?”
Kandria hesitates. “Jaunt.”
“I assume his name has a humorous backstory,” Tech comments.
“When he was a cadet, he called a thirty-six hour training hike a ‘nice little jaunt’.” Kandria is surprised at how nice it feels to talk about him.
Tech chuckles. “That reminds me of my brother Echo…he was not originally a member of our squad; however, his name was similarly acquired. He had an unfortunate habit of echoing information to his original squad. He still does, if I am being honest.”
“Echo,” Kandria says. “That’s a nice name.”
“He was not always fond of it,” Tech says. “But he seems pleased with it now.”
Kandria laughs.
“Our sister, Omega, was named like a natborn in a way,” Tech continues. “As far as I am aware, she was decanted with that name. You and Omega will get along well, I think.”
Kandria nearly drops the wire and blade in her hands, turning to look up at Tech. He has gone still as well, his dark eyes wide. “Ah,” he says, almost to himself, and she hears him swallow. He puts down the wire. “That is…I think that if the two of you ever met, you would get along.”
A question burns on Kandria’s tongue, one she hadn’t even dared to hope to ask, hadn’t even considered a possibility. “You’ll take me with you?” Her voice comes out as a breathless whisper.
She isn’t sure Tech heard her until he gives a single nod, a lift and drop of his head. “That is the plan.”
“The plan,” Kandria echoes, and she feels the thrill of terrified excitement.
“I have not been given the impression that you are safe or happy with your uncle and cousins,” Tech says, and his voice is quiet, even though they both know that the men in question are away from the warehouse.
“My father would not have wanted me with them,” Kandria says, moving her eyes to the floor. “Jaunt tried to protect me, but…he couldn’t forever.”
Tech nods again. “I know that it is a lot to ask, but I hope you will trust me.”
Impulsively, Kandria drops her wire and grasps his now empty hand, gripping it tight. “I do!” she insists.
Tech looks surprised by the sudden contact, but he does not pull away. “It will not be easy,” Tech tells her, “and there are risks.”
Kandria nods. “I know.”
“Good,” Tech says. “Then I can count on your discretion? We must not give Garo any reason to believe we have any sort of scheme.”
Kandria nods again.
Tech’s hand until this moment has been slack in hers; however, now, he curls his fingers around hers and squeezes briefly before pulling away. “I will give you information as you need it; otherwise, it is safer that you remain in the dark.”
“Okay,” Kandria agrees, even if she longs to ask more questions. She does trust him. She has to trust him.
Because there is no one else left in the galaxy for her to trust.
Until now.

Stephen tries very hard to temper it but he can be rather possessive of Tony. In a moment of weakness, he snaps and lets it show, only to learn that Tony finds his possessive streak absolutely enchanting.
Okay, so I've been SO good about keeping these to the 100-300 range, but then this idea hit me and wouldn't let go. So... not a drabble.
Stephen’s gaze darted to where Pepper had just entered the room, perfect smile on her face.
Instinctively, Stephen wrapped his arm tighter around Tony’s waist, pulling Tony into his side. Tony glanced up at him, amused. Stephen leaned down, pressing a kiss against Tony’s lips, an almost painful need to claim Tony surging through him. It happened almost any time he saw Pepper, saw her and remembered the life that Tony had almost lived.
Would have lived, if Stephen hadn’t interfered.
In front of them Rhodes sighed and Stephen realized that he’d completely interrupted whatever conversation Tony and Rhodes had been having.
He didn’t have it in him to feel guilty.
Tony pulled back from the kiss eventually. “I know I’m irresistible, Stephen. But if we’re not careful Rhodey’s going to put a ban on all public displays of affection. He’s like a nun, ridiculously chaste and virtuous.”
“I’m not chaste,” Rhodes argued. “But the two of you are ridiculous.”
Tony met Stephen’s gaze and rolled his eyes fondly, but turned back to Rhodes. “You are so chaste. You never liked the stripper pole.”
Rhodes gave Tony an exasperated look, shaking his head as though Tony was being ridiculous. Which, technically, could very well be argued as accurate. “Tony, it was a stripper pole.”
“And I looked damn good on it.”
That caught Stephen’s attention. “Wait, you got on the stripper pole?”
Tony smirked at him. “I’ll have you know that I’m quite flexible and I had excellent teachers.” He leaned forward. “I’d be more than willing to show you at some point.”
“Oh, would you,“ Stephen purred, letting his hand drift down Tony’s side.
“Nope, no.” Rhodes held up his hands. “Not happening. You two are not having this conversation in front of me.”
Tony stuck his tongue out at Rhodes in what was a completely mature response. “See what I mean? Chaste.”
Rhodes rolled his eyes. “You know what, I’m leaving you two sickening love birds alone; I need a drink.”
“Chaste,” Tony sang-song after him. When he turned to Stephen, however, his face was serious. “You know Pepper and I were over long before you came around, right?” Tony said, lip quirking up in a smile that was meant to reassure. “You don’t need to feel threatened by her.”
Stephen hadn’t realized that Tony had put together Stephen’s displays of possessiveness with the presence of Pepper, but he wasn’t surprised, either. Tony was far more perceptive than he pretended to be. “I’m not threatened by her,” Stephen countered. It was true, he wasn’t. He was entirely certain about Tony and him. He brought his hand up to Tony’s face, cupping it. “You love me. I know that.”
Stephen had made sure of it. Fascination was a powerful thing, and it’d been such a little spell.
It had faded, eventually, but all Stephen had needed was an in.
“I do,” Tony agreed, easily. “So why do you act as though she’s going to steal me away every time she so much as walks through the door?”
Guilt.
Because he needed to convince himself that Tony was better off with him. Safer with him. Happier with him.
“Do you really mind that I’m a possessive bastard?” Stephen asked instead of putting any of that into words. “Does it bother you to know how much I want you?” And by the Vishanti, did he want Tony. Everything he’d done was for the want of Tony.
A wry grin crossed Tony’s face. “You know I don’t mind the possessive bits. Probably should. But don’t. In fact, I probably like it a little too much.” His eyes glittered teasingly. “Honestly, it’s a bit of a turn on, knowing you want me the way you do.” He paused. “I just worry about you, I don’t want you to feel like I might run back to an old relationship the moment your back is turned.”
“I know you won’t,” Stephen said slowly. “I’m just not used to being able to keep good things.” He’d lost Tony once. He leaned down to kiss Tony again. “You’re one of the best things to ever happen to me.”
A faint flush crossed Tony’s face. “Well, you get to keep me,” he promised. “I’m not going anywhere.”

Was I the problem? Did I do something to make you hate me so much?
Why didn’t you just leave me instead of lying so many times to my face?
Was I stupid to love you? Was I reckless to help? Was it obvious to anybody else?
I hope you rot in this hell you have made yourself. It’s my last gift I will give to you.
You knew how my life was before I met you. Yet you still did this to me.
Cold. Calculated. That is all you will ever be.
If I had the power to curse you. I would have done it long ago.
Once I leave this house, this country all over again. Do yourself a favour. Stay away from me.
Stay far, far away from me.
Otherwise, I can and most absolutely will kill you myself.
If you wish to keep your life.
Stay in your country and I will stay in mine.
I don’t want to be pushed into a corner. But you keep being adamant on doing so.
Don’t blame me when I bite you. Blame yourself for ignoring the warning signs.
You are the reason we are no longer married. Take accountability for your actions and shut the fuck up.

König. You still don’t know if that’s his actual name or just simply a call sign. He never told you either way.
But what does it matter?
The man who had once been the epitome of comfort and support in your life had become a shadow of his former self. The trust that had once been as solid as steel between you had been shattered into a million pieces.
Leaving a gaping chasm of doubt and anger in its place.
The coldness in his eyes, the way he looked at you now, it was like you were nothing but a stranger to him.
Someone who had merely crossed his path at the wrong time.
"I will leave, and you won't see me again." you snarl, getting up to get your things.
König remains seated, his expression unreadable. "Reaper, I know you're upset, but we need to talk about this."
"There's nothing to talk about. You chose to cheat. You made that choice. Suffer the consequences. I'm not the one who needs to explain anything. You're the one who broke our vows.”
Tumblr media
“My life is in my hands. I will not become who you are.” You told him. Your knuckles turning white from the way you turned your hands into fists. You were so tired of the kind of excuses coming from the mouths of men who neither cared nor wanted you around.
You weren’t going to let König know you again. To choose death than suffer through his presence a second time. It made so much sense to you. You do enough talk. What did you learn from your mistakes? Did you even learn from them at all?
If he can’t see it. May he drown inside his endless well of pitiful tears.
You are not his wife, his friend, his punching bag. The call sign ‘Grim Reaper’? You earned it for a reason. Too bad he’s too blind to see it.
What has eyes but cannot see?
Escape.
Escape and run faster than he can hope to catch up.
If he can’t take the hint, then…..you would have to kill him yourself.
Can’t be too hard to kill a six-foot ten adult man, right?
You can hear the shouting between him and his girlfriend. A sickening, twisted grin spreads across your face. Sweet revenge for the child you lost years ago.  Weight began to lift from your shoulders. It wasn’t over by a long shot. But now you know how to twist the knife to get what you wanted in order to leave.
To head back home where you felt like you belonged completely.
Home. Your home.
The one where you don’t have to hide from broken bottles, yelling, shouting, endless need to feel like you have to explain yourself.
Could it still be there when you go back? Will it still be there now?

Hamish, former chief of the Shivering Shores, is coming to Berk and has requested Hiccup play some songs he's written over the years. The problem? No one else knew Hiccup could fiddle, and he's never performed for anyone.
The idea for this is completely self-indulgent and comes from the fact that Alexander Rybak does the Norwegian voice for Hiccup. He wrote two songs for the series, including one specifically for Toothless. I can’t just sit here knowing that and NOT write a fic, I mean COME ON. Also, in the Episode with Garf, Hiccup’s song was about Toothless, and he was really enthusiastic about it, making me think he wrote it himself.
This is not historically accurate, but neither is the source material.
Set somewhere during RTTE, before Blindsided.
Things had thankfully been slow at the Edge. The Hunters hadn’t been seen in a while, probably regrouping or strategizing. But the anxiety of that unknown was quickly pushed aside with a Terror Mail from Berk.
“Alright gang,” Hiccup stated that morning. “Who’s feeling homesick?”
Fishlegs sheepishly raised his hand, but the rest just kind of looked at each other.
“Well, you’re in luck. We’re heading back to Berk for a little vacation! The Shiver Shores are coming in a week, and they’ll be in Berk for three days. Hamish’s oldest son Hagar has taken over as chief.”
“Is Hamish okay?” Fishlegs asked, as that was the usual reason a tribe had a new chief.
“As far as I know, he’s still alive. Sounds like his health is declining and it was getting hard to keep up with all the duties. Hel, it’s hard when you’re not sick,” Hiccup muttered that last bit to himself.
“When do we leave?” Asked Astrid.
“I’m leaving today,” Hiccup rested his hands on his waist. “Dad specifically asked me to come early to help with some preparations. You guys are welcome to head back on Frigg’s day. Or earlier, if you want. But I’d like someone to stay on the Edge as long as possible.”
“Sweet! Unsupervised vacation!” Tuffnut high fived his sister.
“Uh, no. If you’re staying, you’re doing your jobs. That means patrolling!”
“Boo!”
“Killjoy!”
“What could your dad possibly need you so early for?” Snotlout asked, insult implied.
Hiccup’s face went red, satisfying Snotlout, but the blush was for a totally different reason. “Hamish…specifically requested…I play the fiddle.”
There was a pause. “You have a week to learn the fiddle?” Asked Tuff.
Hiccup sighed. “No, I have a week to brush up on the fiddle.”
Then everyone yelled in unison, “You can fiddle!?”
He chuckled awkwardly. “Yeeeeep.”
“Since when?!” Snotlout demanded. “I’ve known you since we were in diapers, and I’ve never heard you play a single note.”
“Yeah, but how well did you know me before the Red Death?”
“People talk, Hiccup. You’re not that good at keeping secrets.”
“And the Nightfury that spent three months in the woods?”
“A notable exception.”
Hiccup awkwardly played with his hands, avoiding eye contact. “I’ve been playing since … well, since I was able to. My mother played. We had her fiddle at the house, and when I was little, my dad asked if I wanted to learn how to play, explaining that mom had. I was really enthusiastic back then, and so when we went to visit the Shivering Shores a few times a year, he had me take lessons with Hamish.”
“Which is why he requested you play now,” Astrid gathered.
“Yeeeep.”
“So, are you good?” Asked Tuff.
“Oh no, I’m terrible. I’m thinking that I’ll just play with the band. Maybe quietly so they drown me out.”
“I’m sure you’ll be great, Hiccup,” Astrid said fondly. “When was the last time you played?”
He scrunched up his lips in thought. “For anyone? Never. Unless you count Hamish. Or Toothless.” He smiled over at his dragon. “But I sometimes play in my room or at the forge if I need to think something through and need to do something with my hands. I didn’t take it with me when we came out here.”
“So a few months.”
“Give or take.”
Tuffnut snapped his fingers. “The Fiddler on the Roof!”
“Excuse me?”
“What? You never heard the rumor of the Fiddler on the Roof? Ugh! It makes so much sense now!”
“What are you talking about?” Hiccup pressed.
“Okay okay, for years people have been talking about a mysterious fiddler in the village. His music carries over the rooftops, so people assumed he was up high…kinda like the chief’s house on the hill?!” Tuffnut nudged him.
“Th-that can’t be right. It must be someone else.”
Fishlegs pointed out, “no one else on the island plays a fiddle though. You said it yourself that you had to take lessons from Hamish.”
“Yeah, but Silent Sven plays the nyckelharpa and Sigurd plays the Hurdy-Gurdy. What if it was one of them?”
“Nope, not a nyckelharpa,” said Tuff.
“And definitely not a hurdy-gurdy!” Said Ruff.
“Besides, they play in the Great Hall all the time, we know what they sound like,” said Fishlegs.
“And it’s definitely a Fiddler on that Roof.”
Hiccup’s face went even more red, and he covered it with his hands. “Oh gods…people have been hearing me for years!”
“That’s the cool part, H,” said Tuff. “The Fiddler is said to be otherworldly in nature, and some even thought he might be a spirit of music himself.”
“Okay, now you’re just messing with me.”
“Am I?” Tuff wiggled his fingers.
“Look, don’t get too excited, okay? I’ll show my dad where I’m at and he might agree to have a private performance with Hamish. I would never want to subject the village to hear my…” he rolled his hand, looking for the word.
“Screeching?”
“‘Fork-on-dinnerplate’?”
“Dying cat?”
“Yeah,” Hiccup said flatly, “One of those.”
“You know, Hiccup,” said Snotlout. “I never saw you as the type to be musically inclined. But it suits you, I must say. Someone’s gotta play the tales of my awesome battles.”
“And the fact that you sing a solo every Snoggletog doesn’t count because…?”
“Duh, because it’s Snoggletog, a season of giving. And I give the gift of my beautiful tenor.” He gestured to his throat.
“Right,” He sighed. “Anyway, I’m going to get packed. Anyone else coming now?”
“I will,” said Astrid.
“Me too!” Said Fishlegs.
Hiccup looked meaningfully at the Twins and Snotlout.
“What?” Asked Snot. “Yeah, we’ll behave! We’ll even patrol! We’re mature adults that don’t need a babysitter.”
“There was only one word in that sentence that was true,” Hiccup said, rolling his eyes and heading out.
Tuff yelled back, “Which one was it? Was it ‘that’?”
An hour later, Astrid, Fishlegs, and Hiccup were packed and ready to head back to Berk. One last chastising for the stragglers, and they were off.
“So…” Fishlegs began, as their trip was underway. “Can I ask more questions about the fiddle?” He squeaked.
Hiccup sighed. “Yeah, I guess. At least I know you two won’t make fun of me for it.”
“Never, Hiccup,” Astrid assured. “I can’t even sing, let alone play an instrument. I bet the muttonheads back at the Edge certainly can’t.”
“Not that I’ve ever heard,” he shrugged.
“What songs can you play?”
Hiccup winced. “Not many. I learned how to play some traditional stuff when I was younger, and when I nailed those down and got tired of them, I started doing my own thing.”
“…what’s your own thing?” Astrid asked.
“Well, I uh…I made up my own songs. Not really writing anything down, but developing a melody I liked…putting some words to it. That kind of thing.”
“You should perform those!” Said Fishlegs, enthusiastically. “I bet people would want to hear a Hiccup original over the same thing we hear all the time!”
He scoffed. “No, you got it all wrong. They aren’t good, Fishlegs! Like…I know you come up with little songs about Meatlug, right?”
“Yeah?”
“Would you perform those in front of the tribe?”
“Ha! No way! Not unless Meatlug was having a panic attack and I needed to calm her down.” He laid on his dragon, giving her a hug. “Then in that case, no crowd could stop me.”
“So did you play a lot?” Asked Astrid. “You said you would play to keep your hands busy.”
“Quite a bit,” he admitted. “It’s kind of fun to play, and the music kinda helps me think. But I’m usually not thinking about the fiddle when I’m playing, so I’m sure it sounds like a bunch of random notes just sliding around.”
“But if you practice a lot, it shouldn’t sound that bad,” she reasoned.
“Oh, you’d be surprised…”
The conversation changed then, and they talked about other things for the rest of the flight. Dragon training, the Hunters, there was even an hour long argument about who would win in a fight between three Flightmares and ten Speed Stingers.
Eventually, they reached Berk right before dinner. Gobber and Stoick were waiting for them and greeted them warmly.
“Evening son! Have a good flight?”
Hiccup slid off Toothless, stretching his back. “Good weather, fun company, no complaints.”
“You know…I got your fiddle out for you. It’s on your desk.”
Hiccup barked a laugh. “That didn’t take long. I thought for sure you’d wait to bring it up until after dinner.”
“Well, the others want to start practice after dinner,” Stoick argued. “Thought you might want a little time to make sure she’s all ready to play.”
“Others?”
“Oh you know, Sven, Sigurd, Hackjaw, Frida, Hilda…and Gobber wants to play the pan flute.”
“I love playing the pan flute!” The man cheered.
“Well, I’ll need all the practice I can get. I’m really hoping to just pretend to play, and let the others kind of drown me out.”
Stoick gave him an incredulous look. “What are you talking about son? Why would they need to drown you out?”
“Dad, I’m not good,” he chuckled humorlessly.
“Aw this hogwash again? You’re a fine fiddler!”
“A damn fine fiddler!” Gobber added.
“Thanks but—“
“No buts!” Stoick interrupted. “It’s been decided. Through our letters, Hamish and I have been talking. I told him about the songs you wrote.”
“You didn’t.”
“I did! And he’s so excited! He wants to hear all four!”
“DAD!”
“I want to hear ‘em properly too! I like that one about the fairytale, that love song? Oh it gets me in the heart. Makes me think of your mother…” he said wistfully.
“Dad!” Hiccup grabbed his face in horror. Feeling more and more sick as the story went on.
Gobber said, “I asked if the one that’s like, ‘come fly with me! Oh whoa, oh whoa’ was in the line up, because that’s the one I like.”
“You too?” He gaped at Gobber. “You’ve been listening?”
“The backroom to the forge is only separated by a cloth lad, not exactly soundproof.”
“And then the one you wrote for Toothless,” Stoick suggested.
Hiccup furrowed his brow, he’d actually come up with a dozen little songs about Toothless. “Which one?”
“Oh you played it for a week straight during our first Snoggletog with the dragons! You built that tail for Toothless, and you were so heartbroken that he was gone…”
“Oh Thor, that one?”
“It was so sweet, lad! No need to be embarrassed.”
“Ugh! And dare I ask about the last one?”
Stoick gave him this weirdly proud smile, “Oh you know which one I’m talkin’ about.”
“If I did, I wouldn’t be asking,” Hiccup droned.
Stoick glanced at Astrid, before leaning in to speak into Hiccup’s ear.
Fishlegs and Astrid had to assume it was beyond embarrassing as Hiccup’s face flushed a vibrant red and his eyes went wide. “You heard that?”
Stoick giggled, “how could I not? You sang with so much passion!”
“I think I’m going to be sick.”
Stoick patted his shoulder. “Everyone gets a little stage fright, son.”
“What about stage paralysis?” He asked.
“We’ll have an hour of music during dinner on the first night. The rest of the band has already figured out all the other music to play. Now, all they need is to hear your songs so they best know how to accompany you.”
“And the songs that they’re playing?”
“You know them. And you know how to make it up if you don’t.”
“You, sir, are putting way too much faith in me.”
“No. You,” he poked Hiccup’s chest, “aren’t putting enough faith in yourself.”
Hiccup rolled his eyes. “Fine, I’m the best fiddler on Berk.”
Fishlegs squeaked, “Aren’t you the only—”
“That’s my point, Fish!” He scratched his head. “Look, I’ll see you guys around. I’m gonna go…fiddle with the fiddle.”
Gobber chuckled, “an oldie, but a goodie.”
As Astrid watched Hiccup and Toothless depart up to the chief’s house, “He’s really good then, chief?”
“Aye! As he is with all his artistic endeavors.”
“The Halls of Valhalla are filled with bards that wished they played as well as him!” Gobber declared.
“So why does he think he’s bad?” Asked Fishlegs. “How can he not notice?”
“Well, you’ve got to look at it from his perspective. Hiccup has always compared himself to others. I’m at fault for that, as well as most in the village. We always told him he wasn’t as good as others at fighting. But he’s taken it to the level of all his skills. You think he’s talented at drawing and smithing, right?”
“Absolutely.”
“But to him, he’s ‘just good enough’ because he’s compared himself to others and decided he’s not as good. I think that’s why he’s so gung-ho about Dragon Training. No one else has ever befriended a Nightfury, therefore, no one to compare to.”
“Wow,” Astrid said sadly. “I never thought of it that way before.”
“With his fiddle, he learned from Hamish, who’s a fantastic fiddler. Hiccup could never quite get the technique the man had. The only other comparisons are Sven and Sigurd, and they’re quite good too. But their instruments sound different from Hiccup’s. He can’t do what they do, therefore, he’s bad.”
“Now I’m depressed,” said Fishlegs. “I never knew this about Hiccup.”
“Oh don’t let it get your skivvies in a twist. Hiccup’s drive to find his place in the village is what drove him to Toothless afterall, right? And look at how he’s doing now!”
Distantly, Astrid could hear it. Someone playing the scales on the fiddle, the notes sliding into place. A note played alone, over and over, and then the next.
“Ah, sounds like it needs some tuning,” Stoick observed. “That’ll bother him all night.”
She wanted to listen. She wanted to sneak over and just watch and listen. But that wouldn’t be fair to him if he was so self-conscious. Maybe this will get him out of his shell, and he’ll be more willing to share his music with her.
Astrid’s parents were having dinner up at the Great Hall, and she happily joined them, catching up with them about all the things that had been happening at the Edge.
As she ate, she watched as Stoick and Hiccup arrived, bowls in hand. Hiccup wore a wooden case on his back, attached with a leather strap.
His fiddle.
It was one thing to have him tell them about it, but to see it…
Then again, this was still just the case. It would be completely different once he was actually holding it and playing it.
He set the case down on a table over by the wall, where she could see other instrument cases sitting and waiting for practice. Then he went and sat with his father at the head table.
“You’ve been away from the boy for an hour and you can’t take your eyes off of him,” Phlegma Hofferson teased.
Astrid whirled around, red faced, and hushed her mother. “Don’t say stuff like that!”
Her father laughed. “Oh, like everyone doesn’t remember you planting a big ol’ wet kiss on him after the dragon war.”
“That was years ago!” She hissed.
“And you’ve only grown fonder of him, no?”
“Ugh.” Astrid’s head smacked lightly on the table. “You two are impossible.”
“We are? Sure dear. But when are you two just going to make it official? You know we’re ready to pay your dowry whenever Stoick’s got the bride price.”
Astrid rubbed her temples. “Look—you’re not…totally wrong about how I feel…but I haven’t said anything, and I’m waiting on Hiccup to make the move.”
“Dear, you’ll be old by then.”
“Give him some credit! He’s got a lot on his mind.”
“I hope he’s got you on his mind too,” Phlegma smirked. “Have you tried seducing him?”
“Mother!” Astrid damn near screamed.
“Sorry dear, sorry. We’ll drop it for now.” Phlegma and Axel shared a smug look.
Astrid doubted they were done with the topic for this trip. If Hiccup was going to be busy in rehearsals most days, then she’d have to find a way to avoid her parents.
Maybe Fishlegs would be up for some fun instead of spending it in the library?
After dinner, Astrid hung around the Hall, even as her parents left.
The rest of the band was setting up. Sigurd and Sven had their strings, Hackjaw had his drums, Frida had the lute, Hilda on the horn, Bard on the mandolin, Bucket had a shaker, and Gobber had his pan flute.
And Hiccup was just sitting by them, not making any move to his case. In fact, he kept glancing around to the other non-band folks in the Hall, waiting for them to leave.
Then his eyes met hers.
She waved and smiled.
He ducked his head sheepishly.
Astrid felt a pang in her chest. It was so heartbreaking to see Hiccup this embarrassed. It was almost like the old days, before Toothless.
Toothless.
The dragon wasn’t in the Great Hall. He was probably frolicking with the other dragons, or just with Stormfly and Meatlug. But if anyone was going to give him the courage to do this, it was Toothless!
Astrid got up and went to find him. Though, it didn’t take long at all. He was sprawled out on the grass on the hill.
“Pst! Toothless!”
He perked up, looking at her, ears up at attention.
“Hiccup’s inside!” She pointed.
He leapt to his feet and trotted over.
“Now,” she told him, “he’s going to be working hard and practicing music with the others inside, but he’s nervous about it, so you’re going to support him, okay?”
Toothless was the smartest dragon she knew. Sometimes with the looks he gave, she swore he was going to open his mouth and speak perfect Norse. Right now was one of those times. He gave her this look, like he knew exactly what she was saying and what needed to happen. He nudged her arm with his nose and then plodded into the Great Hall and over to Hiccup.
Hiccup lit up when he saw his friend, and greeted him with a chin scratch.
Toothless laid at his feet, paws crossed elegantly.
Hiccup chuckled, and then looked over to her, still standing in the doorway.
Astrid gave him the thumbs up and a wide reassuring smile.
Hiccup returned it, though not as confident. But he did get up and go to the fiddle case.
Astrid decided to leave and give him his privacy. Toothless was all the support he needed right now, and anymore attention would just make him crumble.
A few minutes later, Hilda put a sign on the door. ‘Practice in session, do not disturb.’
So now it was a waiting game. Hiccup obviously wasn’t going to give out any sneak previews. Though she did try to keep an eye on him.
As the week went on, she noticed happily that his demeanor had changed quite a bit. He stood up straighter when he went into practice, and he talked freely with the band, like he was one of them instead of an intruder.
Astrid wondered if someone had said something to him, or if just having Toothless around was making a difference.
The band practiced for a few hours after dinner every night. Even with the doors closed, the faintest music could be heard. Astrid didn’t know enough about instruments to know if she was hearing a fiddle or nyckelharpa or hurdy-gurdy.
She actually wasn’t really sure what those last two were.
During the day, Hiccup was mostly helping with preparations. She often saw him helping someone or another in the town.
But there were a few hours a day where he couldn’t be found. He wasn’t at his father’s house or the Great Hall.
“Hey Chief,” she greeted. “Have you seen your son around?”
“Nope,” he smiled. “He’s gone off to find a place to practice.”
“He’s really taking this fiddle performance to heart, isn’t he?”
“Sure is,” he continued smiling, seemingly proud at the thought. “Hiccup’s a viking, though he might protest. He’s as bullheaded and stubborn as the lot of us. When he doesn’t want to do something, he fights and protests the whole way. But when he finds a reason to want to do something, he dives in, head first, and puts his whole being into it.”
“Yeah,” Astrid agreed. “I’ve seen that. And he’s good about finding a reason to do something.”
“We’re friends with the Shivering Shores, our alliance isn’t in any trouble. But Hiccup knows I’m good friends with Hamish, and he has a lot of respect for the man. I think it might break his heart if he disappointed him.”
“Hiccup has always valued other’s opinions,” she supposed.
“And…” Stoick drawled, a keen smile on his face. “I happen to know one of the songs he’s got is a love song. Maybe he wants it just right to convey a message?”
Astrid flushed red. “T-t-to who?”
“Ah, I’m joking,” he patted her back, though the smile didn’t go away.
Stoick had read her like a book. He knew there was something going on between them, even if that ‘something’ had been in a weird limbo for years.
She looked away, shyly. “Well, anyways, I’m excited to see him perform.”
“Aye, me too, lass. Should be memorable!”
—-
Snotlout and the Twins arrived the next day, one day before the Shivering Shores’ arrival. Despite what Astrid was expecting, they seemed to have forgotten all about Hiccup’s fiddle secret, as no one brought it up.
They had dinner together in the Great Hall, which was now decorated with fresh flowers and garland.
“So,” Hiccup began, sitting down with a plate of chicken and veggies. “How’s the Edge? Everything still quiet?”
“You think anything is quiet with these dunderheads?” Snotlout jabbed a thumb over at the twins. “But as for our enemies, we didn’t see anything.”
“Did the twins cause any—”
“The answer is yes, and you don’t want to know. We’ll talk about it on the way back, I already did my part.”
Hiccup sighed. “Well, thank you, Snotlout. I knew I could trust you to watch the Edge while we were away.”
Snotlout sat up straight at this praise and started to smile. “I did do a good job, didn’t I? Hey, maybe you shouldn’t even worry about coming back to the Edge. Your dad seemed really stressed and you should—”
“Nice try, but I’m definitely going back.”
Snotlout folded his hands behind his head. “Can’t blame me for trying.”
“How goes the fiddling practice?” Asked Fishlegs.
Astrid flinched heavily, ready to punch him.
“Oh yeah!” Said Snotlout. “You’ve got a little recital coming up, don’t you?”
“Hiccup: Live in Concert!” Said Tuffnut, enthusiastically. “I’ve been thinking about it all week!”
“Tomorrow during dinner.” Hiccup nodded, looking sheepish. “I think it’ll be okay. I’m really nervous, but…I found a really good tactic to distract myself.”
“And that is…?”
“I play to Toothless, specifically. He really likes music, and almost dances to it. It’s kind of adorable. So I just watch him.”
Astrid tried not to seem too proud. After all, it was her that encouraged Toothless to join that first rehearsal.
“So what are ya gonna play?” Tuffnut asked. “Silvard had a Little Yak?”
Hiccup rolled his eyes, but retorted smugly, “You’ll just have to wait and see.”
“Did your dad convince you to play the songs you wrote?” Fishlegs asked, again making Astrid want to hit him.
Hiccup sighed. “Yep.”
“Hold on,” said Snot. “You wrote songs?”
“Sure. Didn’t you write a few for Garf?”
“That’s totally different,” Snotlout laughed. “I never expected to perform them for anyone. Oh this is rich. I can’t wait until you see what we have in store for you tomorrow!”
Hiccup felt pale. “Wh-what are you talking about?”
“Nothing much,” said Tuff. “Just a little surprise.”
“You’ll love it,” insisted Ruffnut.
“Somehow, I doubt that completely.”
Great ships with black sails arrived at the docks the next day. Hiccup stood with Stoick to greet the guests, while Astrid stood a little ways away for emotional support. Hiccup had foregone the leather armor, as requested by his father, and went back to his fur vest. His hair was still a mess, despite combing it for twenty minutes. It was probably stuck in place for ever thanks to Toothless’ saliva.
Hamish, a man as big as Stoick, disembarked first, using a cane to get around. “Stoick! My old friend!”
“Good to see you, Hamish! Have a nice trip?”
“Oh yes, very peaceful. Ever since your boy made peace with the dragons, sailin’ around has been a breeze! Of course, that doesn’t hurt.” He pointed at the three dragons leashed to the ship, having pulled it. They were all getting fish and scratches from the rest of the crew.
Hiccup smiled proudly.
“And look at you, boy-o!” Hamish praised, spotting him. “Shot up like a tree! I wager you’ll be taller than your old man one day.”
“Wouldn’t that be something?” Hiccup chuckled.
“Well you’ve grown into a fine young man, are your fiddling skills set to match?”
Hiccup’s smile faltered. “Hamish, I’m going to do my best, but I don’t think I’ll ever be as good as you.”
“Hiccup…” Stoick reprimanded.
“You aren’t me, lad!” Hamish said joyfully. “I could never tame a dragon like you did! Let alone smith a tail! You have a lot of skills that you’ve honed over the years. Your father just said you never gave up the instrument, so I want to see what you’ve got!”
That seemed to relieve Hiccup more than any other words had up until now. He smiled genuinely and said, “thanks for understanding.”
Hagar, the new chief of the Shivering Shores disembarked a moment later and came to stand by his dad. He was just as large, but had no gray in his beard. He greeted Hiccup and Stoick with a wide smile.
“Incoming dragons!” The lookout called, pointing out over the sea.
Hiccup and Astrid narrowed their eyes, looking at the two dragons coming in.
“Is that…?” Astrid asked.
“Oh gods,” Hiccup moaned.
Before they even landed, a voice called boisterously. “BROTHER!”
“H-hey Dagur…” Hiccup waved awkwardly.
“Dagur of the Berserkers?” Asked Hamish. “What a pleasant surprise! What are you doing here?”
“Hamish! You’re looking well!” Dagur and Shattermaster landed at the docks while Heather landed back by Astrid. “How are you feeling?”
“Oh I’m doing pretty good. Some days are better than others. Been having a lot of great days leading up to this trip!”
“Great to hear!”
“So…what brings you to Berk?” Hiccup asked, dread churning in his gut. He had been on edge since Snotlout and the Twins said they had a surprise for him.
Dagur laughed. “Isn’t it obvious?! We’re here to see your fiddling prowess!”
Hiccup smacked his forehead. “Those muttonheads…”
“Yes, Heather and I came to check in on the Edge a few days ago, and Snothat told us all about what you were doing! Why didn’t you ever tell me you played the fiddle?”
“He didn’t tell any of us,” said Astrid. “Apparently, he’s not very good.” She smirked.
“So he thinks!” Said Stoick.
“Alright, alright. I should have known,” Hiccup groaned. “It’s fine. The more the merrier, right?” He smiled, but it was wobbly.
“And of course it’s always a pleasure to see the Shivering Shores folks, especially after we confirmed our alliance.” He shook Hamish and Hagar’s hands.
“Glad to have Berserker Island back in our good graces,” said Hagar.
“It's all thanks to my sweet baby brother!” Dagur grabbed Hiccup and pulled him into a side hug. “Showed me the error of my ways. Converted me into a real dragon lover. United me with my long lost sister! Oh, such a big and loving heart! The heart of an artist and musician!”
Hiccup wheezed. “You’re too kind, Dagur.”
“Brother?” Asked Hagar with an amused smile.
“Honorary title,” Hiccup wheezed again.
It seemed like Dagur’s praise reframed his arrival to Hagar and Hamish, and they looked a lot more relaxed and amused.
“We’ll only stay tonight,” said Heather. “To watch Hiccup’s performance and give our dragons some time to rest. This is your vacation, after all. We didn’t mean to intrude.”
“Tonight is the best part, anyway!” Said Hagar. “Feasting! Music! Dancing! And barrels of mead!” He gestured to their ship, where several barrels were stacked in a pyramid.
Stoick cheered gleefully.
“Perfect,” said Hiccup, “drunk ears are happy ears.”
Astrid elbowed him.
—-
Dinner time came around far too quickly for Hiccup’s liking, as with most things dreaded.
The band was setting up in front of a support pillar. The tables were arranged in a semi circle around them, with enough space in front to move around. Directly to Hiccup’s left was the head table, where Hamish, Hagar, and his father sat. Next to them, with a front row view, was the table with his friends. They all watched eagerly as Hiccup moved around and talked with the band.
Toothless laid at the front of the table, on his absolute best behavior. His eyes were rounded and soft, as he occasionally stuck his tongue out in excitement.
People were still milling around, getting drinks and sharing food.
No introductions were made yet, no commencement speeches, but Hiccup had his fiddle in hand and walked up to the front of the band. The players watched him, waiting for a queue.
Hiccup nodded his head, put the fiddle to his chin and started a fast paced one note sprint, literally sounding like someone was running. Then Hackjaw came in with several heavy beats of his drum. Then the rest of the band joined, filling the hall with boisterous music.
And to Astrid’s disappointment, mostly drowning out Hiccup. He had taken a few steps back to stand with the group. He had his head bowed, and eyes clenched shut tightly as he played. Occasionally, she thought she could hear that sprinting note from him, but the song seemed to highlight the other members of the band. Frida had an incredible performance on the lute, plucking the notes and a dizzying speed. Same with each member, all having a unique solo to introduce their sound. The band played the same driving melody in the background while Hiccup stayed playing that same note.
The song came to an end, and the crowd was full of cheers.
Hiccup sighed in relief and shared a smile with the other players. They all gave him thumbs up.
“Looks like everyone has found their seats,” said Stoick, his voice booming over the chattering crowd.
Everyone grew silent, ready to listen.
“Tonight, we welcome our dear friends from the Shivering Shores, and celebrate their new era with them. Hagar has shown to be a very capable leader, and will surely follow in his father’s legacy.”
A cheer.
“We honor our friendship with the Shivering Shores, and we’re grateful for the many years Hamish worked with us. As a thank you, we have a special performance prepared. Specially requested from Hamish himself, my son Hiccup will be joining the band tonight on the fiddle.”
Another cheer went up through the crowd, and Astrid swore she heard people say “no way” and “he’s so much like his mother” and even “is there anything he can’t do?”
It made Astrid’s heart swell with pride.
“Many of you older folks may remember that my dear Valka was a fiddler. Well, as a little boy, Hiccup picked up the instrument and got his instruction from Hamish himself, the best fiddler in the archipelago.”
“We’ll see about that!” Hamish laughed.
Stoick grinned. “Hiccup has prepared several unique songs for your listening pleasure this evening. Take it away whenever you’re ready, son.”
Hiccup had his awkward ‘I know I messed up but please don’t be mad at me’ smile on his face as he shuffled closer to the front.
He shrugged and said, “sorry in advance.”
The rest of the band scoffed.
He put the fiddle on his chin, taking several deep breaths. He glanced across the room, lingering on Astrid’s face for a moment.
She gave him an enthusiastic thumbs up.
Then he looked at Toothless, and actually started to smile a little.
He turned to the band, and mouthed something to them, though she couldn’t tell what.
Then he pinched his eyes shut, and set his mouth in a thin line…
And he attacked the fiddle, the bow ripping across the strings with the fervor to make sparks fly if they could. His eyebrows twitched and his nostrils flared as the notes came out rapid fire. His entire body moved with the effort, like it took every fiber of his being to make this wonderful, soul-filling sound.
“Holy—” Snotlout barked.
He briefly turned to the band and bobbed his head to bring them in, and a joyful bouncing beat filled the hall. People started stomping and clapping.
Then the fiddle slowed to a less intense melody, and Hiccup opened his mouth.
“Years ago, when I was younger, I kinda liked a girl I knew.
Thought she was mine and we were sweethearts. That was then, but then it's true…”
The music cut out, except for a few plucks of the fiddle strings.
Then Hiccup belted out, while continuing to play.
“I'm in love with a fairytale! Even though it hurts…
'Cause I don't care if I lose my mind, I'm already cursed!”
He returned to that intense dance with the bow, his heel slamming back on the floor with each beat of the drum. He twisted and jerked, like he was fighting with the music.
And he was winning.
“Every day, between the fighting, I could have sworn we fell in love.
No one else could make me sadder, but no one else could lift me high above!
I don't know what I was doing, she let me go, we grew apart…
Nowadays, I cannot brave her…”
He dared to smile.
“But when I do, we'll get a brand new start!”
He pulled on the strings, a high note that conveyed heartache. Astrid felt it in her chest.
“I'm in love with a fairytale, even though it hurts,
'Cause I don't care if I lose my mind, I'm already cursed…”
The band cut out, suddenly, leaving Hiccup to battle the notes on his own. His fingers flew in a flurry, matching the cutting of the bow. Hiccup set his jaw, garnering the strength for the end. A few slower, growing notes, and he sang again.
“She's a fairytale, yeah! Even though it hurts…
'Cause I don't care if I lose my mind, I'm already cursed!”
Astrid had no idea he could sing like that, or even hit that note. It struck her to the core, and she sat breathless and stunned as he played his last battle hymn and ended with a flourish.
The hall was deafeningly loud with cheers as Hiccup finally, finally opened his eyes to look around. He seemed surprised as he met everyone’s boisterous cheers.
Dagur launched from his seat and ran to Hiccup, grabbing him in a hug that lifted him off the floor. He laughed maniacally, and Astrid could hear him damn near yell, “that was amazing, brother! The best song I’ve ever heard!”
Hiccup looked kind of pale, she noticed.
Once Dagur set him back on his feet, Hiccup used his shoulder to stand upright.
“Thank you!” He called to the crowd still freaking out.
“Alright, settle down,” Stoick called, laughter in his voice.
Once it got quieter, Hiccup said, “thank you, very much. I wasn’t expecting that kind of reception. I uh…I have some more songs for you, but I’m feeling kind of light headed, so I’m going to sit down for a minute.”
Astrid patted the empty spot beside her, she saved just for him.
He slid into it, awkwardly smiling. “Hey, how’s it going?”
“What the hell, Haddock?!” Snotlout shouted.
“Aww, thanks Snotlout, that means a lot.”
Astrid giggled, and gave Hiccup a pat to the shoulder, the universal ‘I’ll be right back’ sign. She got up and went to get him some water, so he could sit and bask in the praise.
The band, in Hiccup’s absence, played a reprise of his song, though it sounded really weird without the fiddle.
Gobber and Hilda belted the lyrics, in an unflattering harmony.
“I'm in love with a fairytale, even though it hurts,
'Cause I don't care if I lose my mind, I'm already cursed!”
She had been so caught up in the music, in the fact that she was finally hearing Hiccup sing and play, she hadn’t paid attention to the lyrics. It was like they had been in a foreign language.
But now, she understood, and her face turned bright red.
Determined not to be awkward, she returned to her place with the cup of water for him.
“Thank you, milady!” He raised the glass with a big smile. His eyes were twinkling in the firelight, and his cheeks flushed a handsome pink.
“You’re welcome,” she replied, voice a little deeper than intended.
She sat beside him, their arms occasionally brushing in the cramped space. But Astrid really didn’t mind. In fact, she had half a mind to reach over and hold his hand.
“I don't know what I was doing, she let me go, we grew apart…
Nowadays, I cannot brave her…
But when I do, we'll get a brand new start!”
So she didn’t hold his hand. She decided that he needed to make that move. Was it petty after he sang her a love song? Maybe.
Hiccup finished his water, still smiling as the gang animatedly talked. No one broached the yak in the room, ‘hey Hiccup, who was that song about, huh?’ and that was just fine.
Once the band finished their butchered version of his song, Hiccup patted her shoulder and got up. “Wish me luck, gang,” he chuckled.
“You don’t need it,” Ruffnut waved him off.
“Yeah, but Astrid might,” Tuff smirked.
Astrid blushed fiercely. “I don’t know…what y-you’re talking about…” She tried to be casual, but couldn’t make eye contact with them.
“You’re hopeless,” said Heather, fondly.
“Oh shush!”
Hiccup had his fiddle in hand, and played a sharp note to get attention. He looked a lot less nervous now, and looked around at everyone. “This next song is older. I started writing it while I was training Toothless, before anyone else knew about dragons, before the Red Death…back then, I practiced a lot of speeches where I tried to convince everyone that we didn’t need to fight them. I never ended up successfully delivering those speeches, but I did write this anyway.” He nodded to Frida, who strummed the lute, starting the song.
Then Hiccup came in, playing a fast tune again, though it wasn’t as intense as the first. He also didn’t have his eyes closed anymore. He was looking directly at Toothless and slowly walked towards him.
“I have a dream, you are there, high above the clouds somewhere.
Rain is falling from the sky but it never touches you, you're way up high!”
Toothless perked up, his tongue lulling out as he stood, making light little steps in time with the beats. The rest of the band joined as Hiccup continued to play and sing at the same time.
“No more worries no more fear, you have made them disappear,
Sadness tried to steal the show, but now it feels like many years ago!”
Hiccup did a little skip hop to be right in front of Toothless, and sang brightly to him.
“And I! I will be with you every step!”
The band shouted, “Hey! Hey!” While Hiccup leaned it and rubbed his nose against Toothless’.
“Tonight I found a friend in you, and I'll keep you close forever!”
He skip-hopped backwards and sang to the room.
“Come fly with me!”
The band echoed, “Ohoohoh Ohoohoh!”
“Into a fantasy!”
“Ohoohoh Ohoohoh!”
“Where you can be whoever you want to be! Come fly with me!”
He was on the move again, skipping over to the table and plopping into the spot next to Astrid. He leaned against the table, pretending to be casual, but he looked her dead in the eyes as he sang.
“We can fly all day long, show me the world, sing me a song,
Tell me what the future holds, you and me will paint it all in gold!”
Astrid beamed at him, her face hurting from the smile.
“And I! I will believe your every word!”
The audience got the prompt and stomped in time “Hey! Hey!” Hiccup leaned in and rubbed his nose against hers, just as he did with Toothless, making her burst into laughter.
“‘Cause I, I have a friend in you. We'll always stay together!”
He leapt to his feet, dancing in time with the beat and Toothless’ little prancing.
“Come fly with me!”
“Ohoohoh Ohoohoh!”
“Into a fantasy!”
“Ohoohoh Ohoohoh!”
“Where you can be whoever you want to be. Come fly with me!”
He played his heart out, barely containing his laughter as Toothless did this adorable little steppy-step right along with him. Then Hiccup stopped his dance, though the smile didn’t leave his face.
“And I…I will be with you every step.”
His notes were slow, and his voice was soft, like he was making a promise. He swept his gaze across the hall, singing to the village this time.
“Tonight I found some friends in you, and I keep you close forever!”
He beckoned with his head, and smiled widely as a few kids from the back ran up and started dancing with Toothless. Hiccup flipped the fiddle to his side and strummed it like a guitar while Hackjaw kept a steady beat.
“Come fly with me, into a fantasy!
Where you can be whoever you want to be!
Come fly with me!”
He flipped the fiddle back onto his chin to resume playing normally, but beckoned at the teens table with his head. This got the Twins and Snotlout up and dancing with the kids.
“Come fly with me!”
“Ohoohoh Ohoohoh!”
“Into a fantasy!”
“Ohoohoh Ohoohoh!”
“Where you can be whoever you want to be. Come fly with me!”
As he came to the end of the song, Snotlout grabbed him by the waist, lifting him off the floor and spinning him around. Hiccup didn’t miss a note though, and only laughed as he was rag dolled around.
The room broke into cheers when the song ended, and Hiccup gave an exaggerated bow. Toothless mimicked this behavior and bowed his head, making his little ear flaps flip around.
Astrid’s heart was full and ready to burst from her chest.
She loved him so much.
Seeing him so happy, having fun and dancing, it almost made her cry tears of joy. She smiled at him, watching as he cooed at Toothless. Then she turned back to her table mates. Fishlegs, Heather, and Dagur were all looking at her with thinly veiled giddy.
From behind them, she could see her parents, who were even more enthusiastic.
She rolled her eyes and covered her face with her hand.
“Alright,” Hiccup said with an exaggerated sigh. “I guess I’ll give the band a break.” He plopped down on the floor, using Toothless as a backrest. In turn, Toothless curled up and rested his head in Hiccup’s lap.
People slowly started to calm down, curious about what was happening next. The children that had been dancing sat down around Toothless, leaning on him too.
That included the Twins, who draped themselves over him.
“This next song, I wrote that first Snoggletog we had with the dragons. That year, all of the dragons left a few days before, and we had no idea why. Toothless couldn’t fly on his own, so I made him a tail that he could use by himself. He flew off, to where I assumed the other dragons were.
“I missed him immediately, and started writing this that same day. You may remember that Snoggletog morning when the dragons returned with a boatload of babies.”
There were some fond ‘aww’s from the crowd.
“Well, Toothless wasn’t with those Dragons. It was a lonely few days waiting for answers, but when he finally came back, he brought my helmet I had lost at sea. He had spent all that time getting back what I had lost. He gave me a wonderful gift that year, so I gave him this song. It’s his very special song and he demands I sit on the floor like this when I play it.”
Toothless warbled in confirmation.
“So…here we go…” He said, without further adieu.
He held the fiddle up to his chin, but instead of using the bow, he plucked at the strings, playing a lullaby.
Apparently, Toothless knew exactly what song this was, as he let out a warm rumbling purr.
“It's almost night, I should be sleeping.
But the moon's so bright, as if it's playing with me.
Round and round, I walk in circles aimlessly.
Where could you be?”
The twins, without prompting, started snapping on the beat and rocking side to side.
“The purple skies were so inviting when we used to fly.
But the excitement slowly fades away.
Feels like there's nothing I wanna do.
Not without you.”
Hiccup leaned his head back, eyes closed and relaxed, as he sang in a falsetto.
“And I will cry you a thousand tears the day you will return.
Tonight I swear, I'll stay right here until you will return.”
Sven picked up his Nyckleharpa, but tapped on it instead, making soft percussion. Hacksaw hit his drum ever so gently with his hand. Frida plucked the same notes on her lute, letting Hiccup go back to his bow.
“And every little cloud, and every single star, reminds me of just how much I miss you. And every little cloud, and every single star, reminds me of just how much I miss you.”
The band crept closer, softly harmonizing as Hiccup played his song. Toothless looked around to them, smiling, as everyone was singing his special song.
“And I will cry you a thousand tears the day you will return.
Tonight I swear, I'll stay right here until you will return.”
Then Hiccup bowed a gentle waltz, one that might be played at a wedding. A warm, happy melody. Sven harmonized.
“And I will cry you a thousand tears the day you will return.
Tonight I swear, I'll stay right here until you will return.”
Slowly, the band faded out until it was just Hiccup plucking those soft notes.
“And every little cloud, and every single star, reminds me of just how much I miss you.”
Hiccup smiled at Toothless, and just as he took his fingers away from the strings, Toothless warbled a loud ‘wah wah wah!’ that Astrid swore sounded like he was trying to sing.
“Yeah bud! Every little cloud!”
“Wah wah wah!”
“And every single star.” He chuckled.
Most people were too busy cooing to applaud. Astrid included. She held her hands over her heart, feeling all those warm and fuzzy un-viking feelings in her chest.
She heard a loud sniff, and turned to see Dagur, Snotlout, and Fishlegs crying. Fishlegs just had tears, Snotlout was weeping openly, and Dagur was bawling uncontrollably.
“That was beautiful,” Dagur whimpered. “He has the most beautiful soul.”
Heather, who was only a little misty-eyed, looked at Astrid and rolled her eyes. “Boys.”
Astrid chuckled, wiping a tear from her eye before joining in the remainder of the applause.
“Alright, I’ve heard enough,” said Hamish, standing without the use of his cane. His face was serious, and solemn.
“Wh-what? Did I–did I do something wrong!?” Hiccup struggled to stand with the fiddle still in hand. “If you didn’t like those, I can play something traditional! I just thought—”
Hamish held up a hand to stop him. “Hiccup. You…are a damn fine fiddler.”
Hiccup relaxed slightly. “So then—”
“It's time for your final test.”
Hiccup stared, wide-eyed. “Really? You think I’m that good?”
“Fiddler on the Roof!” Tuffnut yelled.
“Is this not a good enough final test!?” Snotlout yelled a beat after.
Hamish moved his cloak aside. “It’s time for you and I to do battle. As master and apprentice.” From under his cloak, he withdrew his own wooden case, and his own fiddle.
Hiccup gulped.
Hamish smiled, good naturedly. He brandished the shiny black instrument. “I’ll hold you to that last song, but now, we play Shades.”
“Shades!?” Hiccup yelled. “Are you—are you sure?”
“You are ready, my boy. Hagar, will you join us on vocals?”
Hagar laughed. “You’re roping me into this too?” But he stood anyway.
“What’s Shades?” Astrid asked Fishlegs.
“Don’t look at me! I don’t know anything about this kind of music!”
It seemed that Hamish heard her question and answered, “Shades is a piece written by my mentor. It’s difficult, but the perfect piece to test my students with. The difficulty lies in performing it with two fiddles.”
Hiccup nodded in agreement. “But I’m willing to try.”
Hamish smiled at him. “That’s a good lad! You’ll take the high part.” He pulled a long note off his strings. Then he turned to the band and told them, “A Minor.”
Then he and Hiccup took a stance, staring at each other. A breath passed, then two.
In a blink, they started playing a frantic gallop in time. The notes started rising, climbing an invisible ladder through the air. Always harmonizing, never falling out of sync. Hackjaw was the only one that joined in, playing a syncopated beat on the drum. Then the fiddles both calmed down to a whisper, and Hagar sang.
“In a forest without any trees, where feelings and memories superimposed by an image of you are caught on the morning dew.”
A duel, trading notes back and forth, taking over each other’s parts.
“Swim in a lake at the first light of day, where children and swans go to play right in the wake of your perfect body and sing of unity.”
Right at the last line, they jumped it, keeping strides with each other. Like running a race, but they were matching each step for step. Hiccup kept his eyes locked with Hamish, watching his hands as he played.
“A Shiv’ring garden where willows grow tall, their shadows caught on a wall.
The sound of weeping so soft in the breeze, a bustle of falling leaves.”
Soft notes, punctuating each line, soft swells, not distracting, just accenting. Matching tone, volume, intensity.
Astrid was riveted. She didn’t know much about fiddling, much less any music, but performing like this without practicing together had to be very hard. Impossible even.
“A night has many shades. It can last for many days and hurt in many ways,
like the force of a rising tide when the moon floats by.”
The song seemed to come to an end. Slow, drawn out notes that seemed to gently set everyone down from the heights they had been climbing.
But then Hamish pulled a triplet, a quick back and forth of the bow. Hiccup returned it. Hamish did it back. Then Hiccup began his sprinting note, and Hamish was right there, meeting it in speed. They grew louder and louder, changing pitch, changing tempos, hitting notes at a dizzying speed of variation. Each one had to be perfect.
Hiccup’s eyes widened as a grin began to tug at his lips. This was the final sprint, this was it!
They played that final climb, hitting a high note and jumping off the ladder into silence.
They both stared at each other, panting, before breaking out into laughter.
“Did I actually do it!?” Hiccup laughed breathlessly.
“Aye lad! Every single note! You’ve been practicing, don’t lie!”
“Of course I have! Ever since I fumbled when I was a kid, it haunted me. I didn’t think I had it down yet though!”
“Oh, you’ve done an old viking proud, you know. I’m thinking of taking on more students now that I’m retired from chiefing. It’ll give me something good to do! I might call on you to show ‘em how to do it right.”
“Oh, I don’t know if I can do it like that again.”
“Sure you can! And next time, it’ll be even better.”
“Well, thanks for the vote of confidence, Hamish.”
For the third time that evening, Hiccup was picked up in a hug and lifted off the floor. “The boy has passed! I can teach him no more!”
The assembled cheered, not all comprehending what exactly had happened, but happy for Hiccup all the same.
Hamish set him back on his feet. “Alright lad, your old man said you got one more song for me. About a girl?”
Hiccup’s face went bright red and he put his free hand to his cheek. “Oh gods…he sure promised you that, huh?”
“Darn tootin’! I’ve enjoyed the rest! I’m sure this will be great!” Then he put an arm around him and spoke to him so softly no one else could hear. Hiccup responded just as quiet, before Hamish burst out laughing. He gave the boy a punch to the shoulder, and exclaimed, “go get her, boy-o~!”
Hiccup gulped, and straightened his clothes nervously.
“We’re doing the last one now, lad?” Gobber asked, grinning.
“Uh oh! Is this the one?!” Stoick barked, standing from his seat.
“Sit down, dad!” Hiccup shouted back, face as red as can be. “Gods preserve me.” He looked back at the band, making sure they were all ready to go. Then he spoke up to the room. “This is my last song for you this evening. I hope you all have enjoyed this little…uh, concert? It was certainly not expected. But your warm reception is appreciated!”
“Whooo! Go Hiccup!” Tuffnut screamed.
He released an awkward laugh. “Yeah, thanks…um.” He brought the fiddle up to rest on his shoulder. “This song…I wrote a really long time ago. Before I met Toothless even. It’s uh…it’s still true though…” he trailed off. He nodded to the band, getting a beat.
Instead of instruments, they all clapped in time, before Hiccup started singing, his face still a bright red.
“This feeling lasted,
I love you, Astrid!
You're so much stronger than me,
But I don't mind!”
Astrid’s jaw dropped, her own face going as red as his. Hiccup began playing a jaunty tune, making Toothless pop to his feet and start dancing again.
“Never mind what the others say, deep inside I'm quite okay.
I may have messed up once or twice, but I really need you!”
He dared to look at her.
“And it's not like I'm the only guy. Oh, I know how you make them cry.
So let's start by being friends and let this friendship never end.
I knew you years ago. What I want, I don't know. But let’s just say it's love!”
Playing the fiddle and having Toothless prancing around gave Hiccup a lot of confidence. That, or just getting those first words out was the hardest part. But now, he was smiling, and hop-skipping around while he played.
“This feeling lasted, I love you, Astrid!
You're so much stronger than me, but I don't mind!
Don't say maybe, just be my lady!
No need to hesitate 'cause you'll be fine!”
Hiccup could, on occasion, be extremely corny. Even now, when he was just playing, he had this faux bashful smile on his face, like he had no clue what he was doing to her. The blush seemed genuine enough.
“So tell me what I want to hear,
No wait, let's just leave it there.
You know I'm not good for you!
Gods, I don't know what to do!”
Stoick had said he sang this song with passion, and he was right! Hiccup belted out the words, like he was making a grand proclamation.
“I liked you from the start!
You melt my icy heart!
And now it's burning hot!”
In retrospect, she always knew he was a performer. He’d always had a streak of the dramatic. Like when he tried to tame the Nightmare during his final exam. Or whenever he revealed one of his inventions. If he was going to do something, it was going to be a grand spectacle. Why was this any different?
“This feeling lasted, I love you, Astrid!
You're so much stronger than me, but I don't mind!
Don't say maybe, just be my lady
No need to hesitate 'Cause you'll be fine!”
He got down on one knee in front of her, looking up at her with big glistening eyes that would put Toothless to shame.
“Don't go away, you're what's left of me!
I once believed you would save my soul.
But if you saw me now crying secretly,
Would you hold my hand and never let it go?”
He flipped the fiddle to his side and strummed it like a guitar. His voice became softer, tender. Now just singing to her, and no one else.
“This feeling lasted, I love you, Astrid!
You're so much stronger than me, but I don't mind!
Don't say maybe, just be my lady!
No need to hesitate 'Cause you'll be fine!”
He popped back up onto his feet, and threw his head back, making his grand declaration into the room.
“Do you hear me, Astrid?
I still love you, Astrid!
I’m getting stronger now, hope you don’t mind!
Don't say maybe, just be my lady
Your parents are bugging me, knowing you'll be fine!”
I love you, Astrid! How long had she waited to hear those words from him? Too long, it seemed. But this seemed worth the wait.
All there was left to do was wait for him to move that damn fiddle out of the way.
He finished his song, flushed but smiling as he gave her a little shrug.
Astrid bolted from her seat, flung her arms around his neck, and kissed him hotly on the lips. In a way she had been wanting to for years, but hadn’t quite had the nerve to do like when she was younger.
She was still able to hear him squeak despite the cacophony that filled the large room.
Shouts of “finally!” And “you owe me ten gold” were totally drowned out in the absolute satisfaction she felt, finally kissing Hiccup.
Someone must have taken his fiddle for him as she felt his arms wrap around her and pull her tight.
Finally, she pulled away, a little winded. His face was priceless. He was dazed, but had this awed and lovestruck smile on his lips.
She played with his hair, then declared, “I don’t know much about music, but…
“Ooh Hiccup, I love you Hiccup!
You’re such a dork, you see?
But I don’t mind!
Won’t say maybe, I’ll be your lady!
I know you’ll take care of me, and I’ll be fine!”
He smiled broadly and pulled her in for another kiss.
“What a way to end a concert!” Hamish yelled from his table. “Way to go, lad!”
“I owe you a thank you, Hamish. I never would have done this if you hadn’t requested it.”
“Anytime, my boy! Always happy to help!”
The Shivering Shores stayed for three days, and in that time, Hiccup spent some time with Hamish, teaching him his songs. He played with the band during dinners, and over all, didn’t seem as secretive as he had been the last week. Everyone knew now, and he accepted that he was good. He was no longer hesitant, but actually allowed himself to show off.
When it was time to return to the Edge, Astrid spied the wooden case among his baggage.
“You’re taking it with you?”
“Might as well, might help me think while I’m planning on how to deal with the hunters. It’s helped in the past.”
“Are you going to give us something to listen to on the way back?” Asked Snotlout. “Gods forbid I have to listen to the Twins bicker for another 8 hours!”
“You want me to fly and play at the same time?”
“Oh like Toothless isn’t doing most of the work!”
Hiccup couldn’t argue with that.
Once they were up in the air and on their way, Hiccup made a great show out of taking out the fiddle and tuning it. Agonizing over each note.
“We know it’s tuned! You’ve been playing it all weekend! It’s tuned!” Snotlout shouted.
Hiccup snorted. “Alright alright, let’s see…” He drew a long note out and sang.
“Ohhhh I got my ax and I got my mace and I love my wife with the ugly face, I’m a viking through and through!!”
And he was promptly relieved of entertainment duties.
—-
A week later, things were back to normal. The twins had done a number on the Edge, and repairs and restocks were needed.
Hiccup and Astrid were up to their necks with duties, busy with work and barely could find a moment to relax, let alone have some time together.
It was late one night when Astrid laid in bed, exhausted but unable to sleep. She kept going over her lists in her mind, making sure she hadnt missed anything.
The silence of the night was interrupted by the soft trill of a fiddle. No particular song, just notes floating around. Fast, slow, but mostly quiet.
Hiccup was also awake and thinking.
She got up and wandered over to his hut. His door was open, and he paced back and forth, with the fiddle on his shoulder. He was obviously talking to himself, but it was quiet and muffled by the music.
“Babe?” She asked, just loud enough.
He jolted. “Astrid! Oh! I didn’t wake you, did I? I’m sorry, I knew I shouldn’t have—“ he went to put the instrument away, but Astrid reached out and stopped him. “No, you didn’t wake me. I was already up. And it was so quiet I probably wouldn't have heard it if I was asleep.”
He sighed in relief.
“Then what’s up?”
“Well, I could tell you were awake, and…I wanted to see you.”
His face colored. “Yeah?”
“Hmmhmm. You don’t have to stop what you’re doing. I kinda like the idea of my own private performance.”
He shyly smiled, then put the fiddle back on his shoulder.
Fishlegs had night patrol. He opted to take Meatlug out for a relaxing flight around the island. He saw Astrid sneak over to Hiccup’s hut, but didn’t say anything. It wasn’t his business. He heard Hiccup playing the fiddle, a lovely little melody.
Then he heard a sharp, off key note, followed by silence.
He may be on patrol, but he had a feeling they didn’t want him to investigate.
------
One time in Highschool, we had a talent show. Know that I went to a very tiny private school, and everyone knew everyone (20 people in my grade). There was this guy in my class, Kevin, who was pretty stoic and quiet. For the talent show, he rode a unicycle while juggling and telling jokes. No one knew he could do that. Even the kids that knew him from Kindergarten.
Songs: Seasoned Oak - King Arthur and the Legend of the Sword
Fairytale - Alexander Rybak
Into a Fantasy - Alexander Rybak
Return (For Toothless) - Alexander Rybak
Shades- Árstídir
OAH- Alexander Rybak (heavily rewritten, and I actually prefer the strings of the Russian version ‘Strela Amura’ better.)
