sorry to bother but I saw ya talk about kirin lore and Mine etc? Specifically about kirin and the full moon? Do you have any stuff I could look at about kirin myth that I could look at? (its cool if its a Japanese source I'll force myself to learn to read it) Or just any thoughts on kirin and Mine in general I've been going ham on stupid kirin-Mine AU lately and its relevant fhdkfd
I'm glad you asked! Unfortunately I'm not positive I saved any of my sources... anywhere, but the good news is I do remember most of my findings in detail and have been itching to post about them. So! I'm taking this opportunity to analyze Mine's tattoo top-to-bottom.
And I'm also approaching this as a sort of redemption arc, because a lot of interpretations of Mine's tattoo out there are based on what I wrote on the wiki. It's not that they're incorrect per se, but there is so much more to it than what the wiki currently goes into, and I'd like to share that with you all today.
I'll start off with some official statements, and because it comes up later, establish the original version of the tattoo Horitomo designed is actually this version with green fur (pictured below):
Like the word kirin-ji, this is a design that evokes the image of a genius. To be honest, the majority of depictions give kirins the face of a dragon, but with a composition like this where it's soaring upwards, you risk ending up with a tattoo that looks too much like Kiryu's. So I looked into some older material, and while it's not too common, I went with a type of kirin that more closely resembles a deer. — Horitomo
It wants to rise above, but chooses to put itself second and use its talent and intellect to support the "king"—the kirin suits Mine, doesn't it? So, with that general concept in mind, we went through several designs done in pencil, went back and forth on various aspects, until we settled on the direction we wanted to take. And after that, the detailed version of the design was produced. — Masayoshi Yokoyama
With Yokoyama's comment, it's clear what the core meaning of his tattoo was meant to be from the beginning. Because a Like a Dragon tattoo represents more than just a summation of who the character is as the audience knows them or their role in the narrative, but who they were before joining the yakuza, why they joined the yakuza, what the motivation was behind their choice of subject, how elements of the tattoo reflect on characters who share the same elements (and vice versa), and how the meaning the tattoo evolves over time in relation to the character's fate.
So my main... misgiving, let's say... with popular interpretations of Mine's tattoo is that they focus solely on Daigo without examining how it relates to anything else. Again, partly my fault, I'll cop to that, but this is an issue with a lot of analysis of Mine as a character... and it's a little frustrating, isn't it? It is for me. But enough complaining, it's showtime:
Some notes design-wise: the decision to portray Mine's kirin as deer-like rather than dragon-like specifically to distance him from Kiryu says a lot about their characters to me. Because Mine is, in a lot of ways, "the complete opposite, or antithesis, of Kiryu." (Yokoyama) But the kirin is ultimately in the "dragon" family of mythological creatures; as such, Mine, no matter how much he tries to set himself apart from Kiryu, will always parallel Kiryu. This is exactly what I was talking about with regard to how tattoos come to change in meaning over time; it's not insanely prophetic, it's something that makes complete sense in-universe, makes sense for Mine to get at the time he got it, but it also ends up representing his relationship with Kiryu so well. The fact the kirin is in the "dragon" family of mythological creatures, in combination with the original green coloring, is also notable. Because the dragon depicted in Daigo's tattoo is the same shade of green.
There are multiple "species" of kirin, denoted by the color of their fur, which corresponds to one of the five phases (五行, gogyō), originating from the concept of wuxing in Chinese philosophy. The word "kirin," strictly speaking, refers to kirin with yellow fur and corresponds to Earth, which is associated with stability, hard work, ambition, and stubbornness. Kirin with green fur are known as shoko (聳孤, shōko) and correspond to Wood, which is associated with luxuriant growth, vitality, strength, and co-operation. Speaking of the five phases, that also ties into the concept of the Four Gods, a motif explored with the protagonists of Yakuza 4: Kiryu is the Azure Dragon, Akiyama is the Vermillion Bird, Saejima is the Black Turtle, and Tanimura is the White Tiger, representing Wood, Fire, Water, and Metal respectively. The "Fifth God," representing Earth, is widely considered to be a kirin. This doesn't really relate to anything though, just food for thought for the Protagonist Mine enjoyers (me <3)
A great deal of the meaning behind Mine's tattoo is etymological in nature. The word "qilin" itself represents a duality: "qi" refers to a female kirin, "lin" refers to a male kirin, and "qilin" refers to the species as whole. The kirin is said to embody yin and yang. And I think this aspect works perfectly with who Mine is as a character often torn between two extremes. He, like the kirin, has the capacity for both benevolence and ferocity, and like the kirin, only becomes violent in retaliation to violence or out of a sense of protectiveness. Also, in a very literal sense, Mine has both Yin cards and Yang cards in Ryu Ga Gotoku Online, which very few characters do due to their contradictory nature. As Horitomo mentions, the design has basis in the word "kirin-ji" (麒麟児, child prodigy, lit. "kirin child"). A lot of people already know this (anyone who's read this post certainly does, at any rate), but fewer are familiar with the origin of the term. In Ancient China, there was a belief that the appearance of a kirin heralds the birth (and death) of a gifted son with a promising future, beliefs held around Confucius being a famous example. Of course, this relates to Daigo in terms of the association with leaders, but it also relates to Mine himself, who views his younger self as a sort of diamond-in-the-rough, a "gem shining brilliantly by the wayside." This reinforces that the tattoo is not just a meta representation of him, but directly relates to how he views himself. Additionally, the kanji that comprise "shoko" read as "soar" (聳, shō; as in, to rise above something) and "orphan" (孤, ko) respectively.
On that note, kirin are capable of flight, which can obviously be connected to his ambition ("rising above" his origins), his theme, and his method of suicide. They hover off of the ground so as to not trample blades of grass, and are often depicted as walking on clouds (which are, of course, depicted in Mine's tattoo). Some kirin even have wings!
Circling back to the note about violence to talk about the kirin's ability in battle: kirin are ferocious combatants and known to have a very strong hind kick; Mine mainly uses his legs to fight. I believe his "red heat state," where he's at his most aggressive, also represents the fire surrounding his kirin. Kirin may use flames to attack. Kirin are also thought to be the only creatures who can defeat a dragon, and I would argue Mine is the only final boss who even manages to come close to defeating Kiryu. I actually would even argue he did win, since he had more stamina left.
Just reiterating for the sake of being thorough, but as mentioned in the ask, kirin are thought to be at their most volatile and at their most powerful during a full moon. You only see it in one shot, but the finale of Yakuza 3 does in fact take place under a full moon. Mine is, of course, shown to be both of those things in the finale.
There's also some sort of association between kirin and thunder/lightning, at least in popular media. Mine and his tattoo are depicted surrounded by lightning in one of his cards, and the "Hakuho Clan Pin" item that came out at the same time has an ability called Roaring Thunder. I'm not sure why this is the case. Perhaps it's to do with the kirin's association with the sky, since thunder and lightning are celestial phenomena.
With that, I believe I've covered everything I wanted to touch on. Thank you for reading and for the opportunity, and I hope I've "redeemed myself" adequately!

The Thematic Relevance of Jesse Pinkman as an Egg 🏳️⚧️
(I wrote this analysis awhile back and wanted to make a fresh post to update it!)
While not intentional, there is a lot in Breaking Bad that supports reading Jesse as an egg. This reading of Jesse has a lot of thematic and narrative relevance and also doesn't create any conflicts with the canon material. Jesse being someone who hasn’t realized he’s not actually a man yet could quite literally be canon.
This analysis is heavily based around parallels between Jesse’s character development and what Breaking Bad thematically associates with gender. It’s also heavily interconnected with the show's overarching theme of change, and also, at least for our two main characters of Walt and Jesse, the revealing of true self. There’s plenty of evidence that each of them already had the traits we see them with at the end of Breaking Bad. Jesse being this very kind and compassionate young adult and Walt being this egotistical monster.
But I would consider Walt's self-deception to be more shallow than Jesse’s self deception. While Walt did end up in a lifestyle that was opposed to who he truly was, he consciously knew what he wanted to some extent, whereas Jesse fully convinced himself that he was a different person than the one he truly is because he never really got the chance to actually figure out much about himself.
There are a lot of examples of Jesse’s disconnected sense of self throughout the show, but the first one that comes to mind has to do with his superhero OCs-
EDIT: YO! if you find video essays more engaging than reading a bunch of text, this analysis now also comes in video form [link]
I think that Jane’s observation that all of them looked like Jesse was, in fact, correct. I wouldn’t consider him doing this as a conscious decision but I feel that he almost admits it. After initially denying that his OCs looked like him and after Jane affectionately teases him he ends up saying to her “like you never wanted a superpower.” And while you could interpret this as just a response to her teasing, I’m convinced that there’s an additional layer to it. Especially because when Jane leaves to check the door, there's a moment where Jesse looks at the sketchbook with his drawings and it seems like he’s considering something, and I’d bet you anything that what he’s thinking about is whether or not he had actually drawn himself and this is REALLY interesting since-
Jesse is a criminal right? And while superheroes themselves are technically criminals as well, as vigilante justice isn’t actually legal, they’re still typically known to be ‘crime fighters’, and Jesse describes his characters as being such. So with his OCs subconsciously being depictions of himself and them being superheroes (crime fighters) and his current life as a criminal, you get the image of someone who doesn’t know who he is or what he wants deep down.
There’s no way that Jesse’s current delinquent lifestyle was his truly… preferred path. It’s much more likely it was the only thing he thought he could do successfully. It’s evidently been the one thing he’s made a decent living off of. He has no support from his parents, and doesn’t seem like he has had it since he was a highschooler. Jesse is shown to have no support outside of the drug trade. Most of his personal skills and interests are artistic or honestly domestic in a world that assigns more value to academics and he’s a highschool graduate who doesn’t have any job experience.
I also believe Jesse is very aggressively ADHD coded, and the combination of having virtually no support, struggling with addiction, and having undiagnosed and improperly self medicated ADHD would make slogging through any “respectable” job that he has access to, or any job that his parents might encourage him to do, unbearable.
So the drug trade was his best bet, Jesse even views cooking meth as a form of art, something that he’s passionate about.
I can’t in good faith ignore that doing something that is... generally frowned upon, didn’t factor into what Jesse chose to do on some level, as society and the structures that it’s built on failed him and there’s an inherent sense of rebellion that often forms in a person when they’re failed like that. Granted, superheroes also tend to often contain some commentary on societies failings as well. Jesse just couldn’t actually be a real-life superhero. So with the few benefits it had in practice compared to any other job, Jesse played into the rest of the role of a criminal, and convinced himself that the aspects of it that conflicted with his personality... didn’t, probably without even noticing.
Even more to this disconnect; When Jane asks “and that’s a superpower?” in response to Jesse explaining Backwardo’s powers Jesse responds with “come on, I was a kid when I drew these, it was like four years ago.” And Jesse is 24 years old in that scene, meaning that he would’ve been 20 when he drew these characters, and when I first wrote this analysis I was wondering whether or not Jesse had gotten involved with the drug trade other than buying drugs by that time, but there wasn’t really anything I could confirm any theories with.
But now I've got the Better Call Saul episode “Waterworks” where Jesse has his second cameo, where he is in fact, 20, and in that cameo Jesse accompanying Emilio, a person we know is his partner in cooking meth, to Saul’s office makes me certain he’s in it by that point. And I just have to wonder if Jesse’s superheroes were almost a… subconscious vent, a manifestation of how being a criminal in the specific way Jesse is, is not what he wants. Something that suggests that Jesse’s actual identity and his current view of his identity don’t line up.
Another thing to point out about the cameo that could be seen as additional evidence of Jesse’s discomfort with being more than just a customer of the drug trade is that he was hanging out outside of Saul’s office, and until Kim gave him one he didn't have a cigarette, so he wasn’t out there to smoke. And while there could be other explanations to why he was outside on his own, I don’t think it’s much of a stretch to say, other than just his general skepticism of Saul, he was just not particularly jazzed to be where he was at that moment and not comfortable going inside.
So relating all of this to gender; that narrative of convincing yourself that you are the person that you’re supposed to be for your best chance of survival instead of being able to truly be yourself already works pretty strongly as an allegory for being trans. But to add onto that even more, thematically Breaking Bad associates “manhood” with the drug trade in one way or another, and paralleling how Jesse realizes he doesn’t fit into the drug trade like he thought he did with how he might not be a cis man like he thought he was makes for a really solid queer reading.
The whole show is pretty explicitly about toxic masculinity. Obviously in real life masculinity and manhood do not have to be toxic, and in Breaking Bad’s original intended story Jesse is a cis man who ends up not fitting into those toxic ideas of manhood.
Things that the rest of the male cast don’t blink at or at least have more mild reactions to, just tear Jesse apart. He’s also targeted at least a couple of times for having emotional vulnerability that is considered to be “not manly”. It’s much easier to point out the differences between him and the male cast than it is to point out similarities between them and this just gets more pronounced the longer the show goes on. He doesn’t really have any positive ties to being a man and I don’t think we can say we ever see Jesse actually reclaim his own sense of manhood. And I think that lack of reclamation gives even more legitimacy to the reading that, along with leaving the drug trade and all of its toxic masculinity bullshit behind, maybe Jesse just leaves behind being a man altogether, and maybe it was something that wasn’t really ever a true part of him, just like his life as a criminal.
Even at the start of the series Jesse’s attempts at hyper-masculinity come off as really goofy and performative. In episode one Krazy-8 mentions that Emilio thinks that Jesse might’ve ratted on him Jesse first has a much more genuine response of “that’s bullshit” which makes sense with his strong character trait of being loyal, but then he goes to say “I should kick his punk ass for even thinking that. and it just sounds like fake bravado to me. There’s no way Jesse actually thinks he stands a chance against Emilio since Jesse has a body type that resembles a small bird and there's no way he has that little self awareness. He's just playing out a script that wasnt even well thought through, and while some of his other performances of masculinity don’t come across as that fake, there aren’t many that feel like they actually come from Jesse himself, they just feel like something that he just thinks he should do.
And while not every experience with men Jesse has is negative, there always seems to be some distance between him and the men he does have good relationships with. Jesse forms a parent-child type relationship with Mike that is healthier than any other he’s had up to that point other than probably his aunt, but there’s a part of Jesse that Mike never seems to fully get. When Jesse doesn’t want Lydia to be killed Mike says that 'this woman deserves to die as much as any man' and I think he misses that Jesse just still isn’t that keen on killing people even with everything he’s gotten involved with. Even if there are some acts of violence and even some people’s deaths he is fine with and thinks are justified, Jesse never fully adapts to “the job” the way Mike does, and Mike is just not quite able to understand that, or at least not why.
Jesse and his friends have a distance between them as well. Though they’re arguably not as entrenched in toxic masculinity as any of the other prominent men in the show are, and aren’t nearly as involved in the violence of dealing drugs despite being in the trade. Yet still Jesse’s interactions with them most of the time feel different and more withdrawn than their interactions with each other. Like Jesse really wants their presence and company and wants to fit in but there ends up being something that he can’t connect with alongside them, and this also gets more prominent as the show progresses. There’s parts where Jesse seems to be withholding how badly his “high rank” in the drug trade is affecting him when Pete and Badger seem to sort of idolize him for it and want in on it. I think Jesse sort of considers saying something to them about it, but he hesitates and doesn’t. He repeatedly doesn’t confide in them even though, while his friends do perform some facets of hyper-masculinity, they don’t really seem to target or reject vulnerability in the way most of the other men in Breaking Bad do. And Jesse’s distance from even the more harmless side of the male cast makes it feel like it’s not just the toxic masculinity that he’s disconnected from.
Jesse’s relationships with women even further separate him from the men of the show. His romantic relationships with Jane and Andrea read much more as relationships between equals, compared to Walt and Skyler or Hank and Marie. While Jesse does throw the “nice job wearing the pants in the family” insult at Walt in episode two of the first season, after Skyler almost caught him moving Emilio’s body, in Jesse’s own relationships he never actually tries to take control and doesn’t have any problem with Jane honestly being the person making more active choices for the both of them in their relationship, which Walt comments on by throwing that same “nice job wearing the pants” insult back at Jesse.
Another interesting thing found within Jesse’s relationship with Jane that ties them to specific gender roles happens after Jane doesn’t really introduce him to her father. Jesse asks about it and after a bit this Jane ends up saying “What am I supposed to say? Hey dad, meet the stoner guy who lives next door and by the way I’m sleeping with him?” and Jesse replies “Is that all you think you’re doing?”
It’s been pretty common for “the guy” to be considered as the one who sees a relationship as just being sex and “the girl” to see it as being romantic, and this is a very very dumb aspect of traditional western gender roles that this scene even has to subvert, but I think in the context of Breaking Bad’s dealings with gender roles the fact that Jesse is put in the role much more typically associated with women could be viewed as significant. And this significance can be extended to the show’s most prominent dynamic, dealing with the relationship between abusive men and women, Jesse is a victim. I’m not implying men can’t be victims of other men's abuse, but it does make Jesse easier to associate with women in the story, and while the narrative association comes from a negative place, the negativity is directed towards men. But the connection it forms between Jesse and women is a sense of camaraderie and even comfort, at least on Jesse’s side.
and with those connections with women I’d say the most accurate egg interpretation of Jesse is that she’s specifically transfeminine in some way.
I think in this analysis its important to specifically examine Jesse's journey with gender questioning as I think it follows the rest of the ups and downs in her learning more about herself in the resr of her character arc. My personal interpretation of Jesse is that she is a non medically transitioning nonbinary transfem person. The not medically transitioning bit is largely because I enjoy bringing attention to the existence of no-med no-op trans people and to push the point that not seeking medical transition doesnt make a person any less trans, though I do feel that since Jesse's relationship with gender is focused on the societal side of gender roles that don't really relate to physical form that it's a reasonable interpretation that she may not medically transition. I think she uses he/him and she/her pronouns, and is maybe a futch lesbian. I’m saying all of this because it'll be the lens through which I’ll be talking about Jesse’s journey with questioning his gender and how that progresses during the timeline of Breaking Bad. However I don’t claim this to be the only version of transfem Jesse that works with my analysis, or that it's necessarily better than any others that do work. I’ll also be mentioning concepts of “offscreen” additional scenes. That being said, if you’re someone who likes to stick 100% to the text given to us, the “offscreen” scenes aren’t exactly necessary for this interpretation to work as a part of the existing story as the general emotions behind them still stand.
I don’t picture Jesse as having any definable Gender (™) experiences when he was younger other than just a general sense of not belonging, though gender wouldn’t be the only thing playing into that. But as Jesse got older and struggled more, he started to purposefully play the part of what he saw as “a man” to survive in the only role that he thought he could. I see the thought “I wish I didn’t have to be a man” crossing his mind every so often though. I think he just deals with his place in the world for awhile, but after Walt enters the scene and Jesse experiences shit he really didn’t bargain for because of his old teacher, someone who is settling into a personification of toxic masculinity, Jesse’s frustration with being a man becomes more prominent and harder to ignore internally.
In my opinion Jane is the person that helped him start to solidify what exactly those thoughts were indicating. Her approach to relationships would be considered not traditionally cishet, and so is the way she presents herself in general, so I think Jane has some sort of knowledge about the complexities of gender, if she isn't actually queer herself in some way.
And she’s one of the only people we see Jesse truly, truly open up to and so I think at some point later in their relationship Jesse might actually say something about wishing she wasn’t a man around Jane, and I can see Jane saying that Jesse doesn't have to be a man if she doesn't want to be.
But then Jane dies, and I think as a result of that and the lesson Jesse learned from rehab “I’m the bad guy” he goes into just total repression mode. Embodying this new belief Jesse very much dips into the hyper-masculine behavior of the drug trade, he is much more concerned with money beyond paying bills and having nice things, and he plans to do the one thing in the entire show that makes me truly angry at him because of this whole thing, attempting to sell drugs to the rehab group. I don’t think he would’ve ever thought of doing something like that before. He’s trying very hard to be something that’s even further from his actual nature than we’ve seen up until this point.
Part of Jesse’s grief over losing Jane, a person who he confided in probably more than anyone else at that point, was to just completely close up, even to himself. Forget all of those parts of himself that resisted the rougher aspects of the drug trade he was getting dragged into and definitely forget about wondering if he really is a man or not.
At least until meeting Andrea and Brock, which snaps him out of that “I’m the bad guy” mindset, but by that time I think just, too much starts to happen for Jesse to have much time to question her gender. I wouldn’t consider her to be as actively repressing any sort of “I wish I wasn’t a man” thoughts but the amount of turmoil and danger that she’s in, just really really doesn’t lend itself to that sort of gender introspection as much.
I’ve got some additional thoughts on Jesse’s journey with gender that are more headcanons than actual analysis of the show so I didn’t include them in the text above. But I still really wanted to share because I like them and think that they really add to the analysis, so here they are;
I mentioned that I don’t think that Jesse had any particularly notable moments that might’ve suggested that she was trans when she was younger other than feeling out of place, but maybe he did have some interest in playing with “girls stuff” and her parents discouraged it because as we know they’re the shitty type of people who value their child being “normal” at the price of that child’s happiness, but I can also see her being one of those kids who just didn’t even grasp the differences between boys and girls stuff for a longer time than others, or I can even see Jesse’s last connection to the "male" side of gender being from when she was a little boy, before he was aware of the concept of what being a man was, and that it would be expected of her.
But later, in his adulthood, after the idea and pressures of "manhood" became very present in his life, one of the more certain instances of gender questioning I picture Jesse having is at some point while hanging out with Badger, Pete and Combo, Jesse screws around and puts on a dress. And he's like “haha I look like such a queer don’t I?” but is internally thinking something more along the lines of “ I will die before I tell anyone how this makes me feel” (that being that it makes him feel happy).
And then, as we enter into the timeline of the show itself; when Jane first tells Jesse that he doesn’t have to be a man if he doesn’t want to, I don’t actually think that Jesse would be receptive of it at first. I think it’s more likely that he’d decide he suddenly doesn’t want to have this discussion anymore and change the subject. Jesse would still have the misconception that you need to medically transition or at least be required to fit some sort of ‘criteria’ to be trans, instead of just identifying as a different gender than your assigned sex, and I think that would play some role in his not wanting to talk about possibly being trans. And even more because, while he could opt out of telling anyone that he’s trans, Jesse’s in a world in general that isn’t trans-friendly, but the drug trade he’s in specifically is very lgbtq-phobic. Jesse himself is definitely gonna have some internalized transphobia, we’ve seen his homophobia, and I definitely read that as a result of his environment rather than actual hatred considering at Jesse’s true core he’s a pretty caring person. But there are definitely people in the drug trade who would be violently homophobic and transphobic, and Jesse would know that, and would probably perceive even realizing that he is trans to be a threat to his safety. But, later on, further into her relationship with Jane I think she’d open up, even if only to Jane.
And that’s what I like to focus on the most with this analysis, all of the happiness and freedom and healing that Jesse gets to feel detaching himself from manhood, something that honestly contributed so much to every part of his suffering. And god does this girl deserve some happiness.
Then when for the most part too much is going on for Jesse to consider whether or not he’s trans, I still sometimes think of a situation where Jesse might’ve suggested? Her gender questioning to Mike, and while I don’t think Mike’s personal reaction would be technically negative, I think he’d tell Jesse to ‘please not share that with anyone else kid’. Which would be discouraging to Jesse, and she’d quickly backtrack, some because of the reaction on its own but also because he really already knows that it’d be stupid to say anything to anyone else, but it’s not until Jesse’s really free from the drug trade that she can finally crack that egg. I really like to think about the comfort and relief Jesse would get to feel no longer having to try and be a man, cause she finally realizes that she isn’t one.

Happy Trans Day of Visibility, everyone! From Hikaru and I to you!!
As I was drawing this, I kept trying to think of a good caption to post it with. I’ve always been known for my words, after all. But for once, I’m at a bit of a loss. It’s a big day for me, but it also just feels like an average Sunday.
I sketched and re-sketched this over and over again, trying to get everything exactly right. It didn’t turn out perfect, but honestly, I like it better that way. Hikaru isn’t exactly the same as me, but a LOT of him is drawn from reflections of me- his experiences with masculinity and transness are a prime example.
This is my first TDOV being fully out, and openly, publicly transitioning. It’s been a difficult year. I’ve faced unimaginable feelings of loneliness and isolation, and kinds of hardships I had never even imagined. Being someone who doesn’t Fit in a small area like mine has left me with a new appreciation for the ability to pass, or my lack thereof. I’ve felt kinds of loneliness and rejection that I had never even fathomed possible before I came out.
But more importantly, I am more in touch with myself than I ever have been before. Knowing myself, knowing Leon, getting to be Leon, is an unimaginable experience. I feel like me for the first time. It took me eighteen years to discover myself, and another two to be confident enough to live it. I still have a long way to go. But I’ve made so many connections, so many friends. I love myself, thoroughly and wholly, for the first time. I’m proud of who I am, and I’m proud of who I’m going to be. It is such a privilege to wake up every day, and know that I’m Leon. I am a self-made man, and I am so proud to be trans. I am proud to be visible. I am proud of who I am, for the first time. It’s scary, and it’s new, and it isn’t easy. But I love being Leon, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
I’m so grateful for this space, for this little corner of demon slayer tumblr I’ve found myself on. I am so unimaginably grateful that I’ve managed to make so many amazing connections in the short time since I made risingscorchingsuns, and nothing makes me happier than having a safe place to be me, and to share the things I love. I love Hikaru, and I love Demon Slayer, and I love all of you guys. Thank you for being here, for reading my silly rambles, for making me feel like I can make something worthwhile. (Seriously, nothing makes my day more than being known as “the Rengoku Mutual”. It makes me happy stim every time I think about it. That fucking rules.)
Anyway, this is getting away from me a bit. Apologies, this post is a bit more emotional than my usual long analysis posts. It’s a big day for me, and I feel really lucky to be able to share it with you guys.
Happy Trans Day of Visibility!!
We are here, and we are real, and we are proud!!
Trans Joy!!! For now, and forever!! We are beautiful!! 🏳️⚧️

🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️🧸👽🦾💔 🔪😭😶 for the one and only lars douglas please :D
It's probably a good thing there’s only one Lars Douglas; I don't think the world could survive two!😉
That being said, here are his headcanons!
🏳️🌈 A sexuality headcanon
Lars is bisexual. He’s attracted to men and women equally, though when he was younger, sometimes he was attracted to one gender more than the other.
🏳️⚧️ A gender headcanon
Lars is genderqueer and uses he/him pronouns. Even though he identifies as a man, he’s not afraid to be feminine. He is always open to playing dress-up with his daughters and letting them put makeup on him or do his hair. Even before the triplets were born, Lars had many female friends he would hang out with even if the activities were not considered “masculine,” like spa days, clothes shopping, or getting manicures.
🧸 A headcanon about their childhood
Lars’s love of explosions started when he was young. As a child, he loved watching fireworks explode in the sky and light it up with dazzling colours and shapes. He used to ask so many questions about how fireworks worked, and when he was old enough, he was allowed to help set them off. While his parents didn’t keep fireworks in the house due to his father’s dislike of the sounds they made, Lars’s neighbours would shoot them for special occasions and let him help fire them. With his parents’ permission, of course!
👽 A headcanon about a weird quirk of there
Lars is always composing new songs. You can almost always find him humming, whistling, or singing his latest piece as he works to perfect it. He also always carries a little notebook to write down things when inspiration hits. Even if it can be annoying, Angela loves watching his face light up as an idea hits him before he begins furiously scribbling in his book.
🦾 A disability headcanon
He has hearing loss because of his music and lab explosions. It's not as bad as Oberon's, but often, Lars will not hear you, ask you to repeat something, or speak louder and slower.
💔 An angsty headcanon
Lars never got rid of his wedding ring. The thought of getting rid of it crossed his mind many times, and he considered countless ways to do it. But whenever he tried, he couldn’t go through with it. A part of his heart would always love Angela, and it was connected to that ring. Lars now keeps the ring in a special box tucked away for safekeeping, and sometimes, when he needs to, he’ll take the ring out and remember the good times he spent with his ex-wife.
🔪 A headcanon relating to fighting/violence
Lars has always been more of a lover than a fighter, but that doesn't mean he’s harmless. As a Bureau agent, he is still trained in self-defence and firearms, even though he’s only a lab expert. Because he travels with the team and does get out into the field, he went through training like the rest of his teammates just not as intense as the field agents.
😭 A headcanon about the worst thing that happened to them
When Lars caught the plague in India, he was convinced he was going to die. He was quarantined to protect others and was mostly alone except when Angela visited to check on him. While isolated from his team, Lars only had his phone to help distract him from his pain. But despite the pain, he found the strength to record videos for his family and friends. If he was going to die, he wanted to say goodbye and leave them something to remember him by, as horrible as he looked when he was infected. After being cured, Lars didn’t delete the videos but never told anyone about them either. If the time comes later on that they are needed, they will be safely stored away for his loved ones to access.
😶 A random headcanon
He used to dress up as a mall Santa Claus; it's where he got such a nice suit from! He started in college to earn some extra money, and while he was very young for the job, a little makeup and a good fake beard did the trick! The children loved him, and Lars had tons of fun listening to them ramble their Christmas lists to him and taking pictures.
And done! How’d I do? Did I make you laugh and cry?
Thanks for the request, Issy!

Do you have any fics that a very gender? Very confronts toxic masculinity in a moving way? Bonus points for 🏳️⚧️
I have to say it was a bit of a challenge to decode this ask so we've decided to do something general and hopefully some of these are what you were asking for. Here are some recs with fics that feature trans!characters in a meaningful way or focus on gender roles.
Fem in a Black Leather Jacket by bleuzombie [Mature, 5k words] #trans!dean
Dean has done the work to be comfortable with who himself but some reassurance from his boyfriend Castiel goes a long way as they head to a concert. Dean never dreamed he would be so lucky to find someone who could love him for all of him, panties and all.
love in the time of quarantine by sharkfish [Explicit, 6k words] #trans!castiel
Dean says, “We should have sex.” Cas chokes and looks up at him. “I’m sorry, I didn’t hear that.” “We should have sex,” Dean repeats, carefully enunciating each word. Cas keeps staring at him blankly. “It’s fun and you’re hot. Perfect quarantivity.”
Made Manifest by schmerzerling [Mature, 6k words] #trans!dean
Wherein Castiel defied God for Dean before Dean even knew his name.
Mira Mira by vipjuly [Teen, 22k words] #gender fluidity
Castiel is forced to retire from being the world's most prolific and successful hired gun. He gets dropped off at Winchester B&B with a vague notion to 'find himself', but he's having a hard time understanding first of all: what that means, and secondly: how to even do that. The proprietor of Winchester B&B, Dean, a retired ex Fed, seems to have some ideas of his own.
Novaks, Rebooted by violue [Explicit, 57k words] #trans!claire
A single father, his trans daughter, a whole new life in The Golden State.
Sometimes You Have to Lose to Win by zeppazariel [Explicit, 55k words] #trans!dean
The thing is, Dean is okay with being bisexual. He’s come to terms with it, ya know? He’s got eyes, and he can see that men are hot sometimes; whatever, not a big deal. He’s perfectly fine with it. In theory. Not so much in practice. Dudes are a no-no, outside of looking. He’s not budging on this one, so it’s with confidence that he announces, “There ain’t a guy in the world who’s going to change my mind, Sam.” “You’re tempting the universe to make fun of you again,” Sam sing-songs. “The universe doesn’t have shit to do with this,” Dean argues. Sam hums. “Whatever you say, man.” But, as it turns out, the universe has a lot to do with this, and it never really misses a chance to mock him, drag him down, kick him while he’s curled into a fetal position, then take him out back and shoot him while laughing cruelly at his misery. Meeting Cas is precisely what that feels like.
BONUS: a/b/o fics that focus on gender roles
Aromatic Adjectives Need Not Apply by JessJesstheBest [Teen, 4k words]
Castiel was an Alpha, despite what everyone always guessed upon meeting him. He was tall, and he had the stern and imposing profile, but, to most people, those Alpha traits were where it ended. He had a lithe, runner’s frame, with trim waist and thick thighs. “Child-bearing hips” he’d been told. Though, obviously, no children would be born of him. This scuffling man, though. He was... round. Potentially child-bearing. And Castiel was sure his true mate wasn’t either of the other two men. Or Castiel is an Alpha that doesn't believe in true mates but sniffs one out anyway.
Butch by tiamatv [Explicit, 54k words]
When the flower shop owner sweeps his fingers through his hair, he nearly knocks the flowers tucked behind his left ear off; he spends a fussy moment readjusting them with both hands. “I don’t need to be rescued. Especially not by a stranger.” Sheesh. Touchy. But since Dean would have flashed fangs if anyone had thought he couldn’t take care of his own damned self, he can’t be throwing any stones. He shrugs—big and exaggerated, both hands up. "Not sayin’ you did. Look, not your fault that God put alpha brains at the base of their dicks." The lowered blue eyes snap back to his. Flower Boy inhales with his lips parted, all pretense at not sniffing Dean out gone, and his eyes go wider. Dean might not dress or act or look like any kind of sweet little omega, but he knows just what he smells like: really fucking inviting.
Oddly Shaped Empty by jemariel [Explicit, 65k words]
Dean grew up thinking -- knowing -- he'd be an alpha. Until he failed to present. As a beta, he has no mating cycle, no noticeable pheromones, none of the physical markers that are so important in a world of alphas and omegas. He's out of place. How is he supposed to navigate his relationships and find love when he doesn't fit into the neatly-defined boxes he's used to? By the time he meets his new roommate, Castiel, he's more or less given up on finding a mate. He wears his secondary gender like a chip on his shoulder. But you never know what the future holds, who will come into your life, and how they might change it forever..... Queer themes, finding identity, reconciling the past, and a whole lot of smut.

Queer OC asks for Silas and Dannie please?
3. How did your oc discover themself? Did something cause them to question, or did they always know?
4. Is your oc's environment supportive about their identity? How does this impact them?
8. Have they had struggles with their identity, be it due to internal or external reasons?
11. Is your oc open about their identity? Are they more lowkey or more blunt about it? Why or why not?
And for the author:
20. Have your ocs helped you in self discovery? How?
Thank you!
3
Silas: I think I've talked about it before. I would say around 11-13 he started to realize he was a boy. There were little things throughout his childhood that kinda hinted at that, but it didn't start to fully click until then. It was when major dysphoria hit and he was like I don't think this is right. Everything feels wrong (:'() and began to desperately find anything that could possibly explain what was going on (which was difficult considering it was the late nineties) but he eventually told his parents how he was feeling and thankfully they were able to take him to a trans specialist and help him with his transition journey.
Dannie: I think there were bits and pieces from their childhood that probably were signs that they were trans, but they didn't realize until later in their late teens, honestly a big reason they discovered themselves was because of the internet (this would've been around 2011 ish) as for sexuality it was a lot more obvious to them. Especially around middle school. But they just figured they were a (cis) lesbian and kept it a huge secret. They didn't actually officially come out to their parents until they were an adult and had moved out. (For both aspects) and while their parents needed some time, they eventually mostly came around to it. And once they started to understand nonbinary more, they would recall moments in Dannie's life and be like "ah, that makes sense" (in a good way)
4
(I feel like I kinda already answered this above so I'm probably going to keep this brief)
Silas: It's accepting for the most part (I think it helps living in a city in a usually more accepting country? It depends) If anything majority of people probably assume he's a cis gay man, and not trans. And people usually tend to mind their business. Silas doesn't usually bring up being trans as often unless somehow it comes up (or if he knows he's with people he trusts)
Dannie: Also lives in a city, most people are too busy with their own lives to care (at least just strangers passing by). (I'm going to try to answer this in a very careful way, since I don't live these experiences but I've heard about them, but I won't go into huge detail since I don't think it's really my place) but Dannie tends to face more day-to-day things/situations involving their race, rather than sexuality and gender. Of course their gender and sexuality play a role, but it's not the first thing people notice. Dannie tends to hang out with others that they can either relate to and/or people they can trust.
8
Silas: Oh definitely. Both external and internal struggles. Mainly about growing up religious and in the south.
Dannie: Yes, they've faced a lot of different types of struggles. Pressure from their family in general. Also religious stuff but in a different way (they grew up Muslim)
11
Feel like I kinda said above.
-
20
Yes, but not the ocs you'd think. Ocs I made when I was still a kid. I think really the first thing that started to open my eyes was Steven Universe and the ocs I made from that. And then when I made one of my fursonas queer (the first time I ever made an oc queer) under the guise of "Well it's fictional and queer people just exist" (this was mostly something I would say to my mom to look for approval, since I was like maybe 11 or so?)

So I had to get a holter monitor set up today at the hospital due to some medical issues I don’t wanna get into, but when the nurse was putting it on I explained to her that I’m a trans man, so I’m gonna have boobs, but that I don’t feel uncomfortable with her seeing my chest because now that I’m on testosterone it just feels like… my chest? Just like, I’m not so self conscious about it anymore if that makes sense? Like, I still get dysphoria of course and I want them gone but it just doesn’t feel so icky anymore. So in any case, it made me really happy to be able to openly share my trans joy and love for my body. And the nurse, fuck, she was just so sweet and kind and asked questions in a respectful way and wasn’t invasive at all! She wanted to know because she wanted to be able to better serve the influx of trans people in my city,, 🥹 It was a very beautiful experience for me and it’s really rare that I get that, at a doctors office of all places, as a trans person. Normally it’s absolute hell,, so it was just really nice and I wanted to share that with all my trans homies on here. I hope it brought you a little bit of hope like it did for me.

You haven’t asked for a prompt, but here’s one that just occurred to me:
Peter Vincent x Lucian at a pride parade 🏳️⚧️ 🏳️🌈
Ah, forgive the lateness for this, didn't even realize I had something in my inbox, been on my phone most of the past few days.
As is typical with most of my aus for this ship, Peter is a trans man, and he and Lucian are bi.
On with the fic!
--
"I know crowds aren't your thing, but come on! This is fun!" Peter grinned, gripping Lucian's hand. "You don't have to, ya know, be all out and proud like some of us, but join in!"
Lucian made a noise in his throat, looking around at all the people in the street. Many were dressed for the occasion, wearing their colors for their sexualities, genders, and identities in all manner of ways. From bracelets to flag capes, to shirts and hats and shoes, and pins, and all other manner of wearable things. It was more color than Lucian was used to, and he had lived through the seventies and eighties of the 20th century.
Still, Peter invited him to Pride here in Las Vegas, and he agreed to go.
Though he had opted out of dressing for the event, preferring to keep to his more casual wear (mainly forgoing his jacket), while Peter wore his typical goth-y attire, but with a lot more color to it.
Mostly pink, purple, and blue, which was the bi flag, as Peter stated. Where he found a fishnet top in those colors, Lucian had no clue, but it seemed to show off his top surgery scars in a way that Peter liked, so Lucian just accepted that this was his attire for the day.
"Crowds make me nervous." Lucian commented. "You know this."
"These are our people, in the queer sense, not the... monster sense, we're not going to be in danger with them about. Don't lycans have pride?"
"We have pride, in the sense of honor and respect for our people, but if you mean are there queer lycans, yes, there are. Many of my people chose to become lycans to escape the hatred humans placed upon them for their identities." Lucian replied. Then added, "Also, you know I am not opposed to dating different genders."
"Right, right." Peter nodded before looking at things at the booths lining the streets, where vendors were selling flags, stickers, pins, all sorts of things. "Should get you somethin'."
"I do not need anything. I'm comfortable keeping things to myself."
"Yeeeeaaaahhhh, but come on, humor me." Peter snorted as he picked up a charm of a heart and a rooster, snickering at it, before grabbing at a beaded necklace in multiple colors.
Lucian sighed. "Fine, I shall humor you. But please pick something fitting of my tastes, no weird shit. Or dog things." He said, watching as someone walked by in a strange, leather mask that looked a bit like a dog. Or was it a horse?
"Right, got it." Peter muttered as Lucian looked at the humans milling about. How strange that times have changed since his younger years, when humans were so aggressive about any of this sort of pride of self.
It was a nice change, humans were learning, that's something.
Though Lucian did have to wonder about some of the ways of expression, seemed a bit annoying to others to be blowing a cheap, plastic horn covered in rainbow stickers in people's faces. He glowered at the man as he approached with it, and the man quickly moved away.
"Alright, got ya somethin'." Peter said, distracting Lucian from the crowds.
In his lover's hand was a simple bracelet, looked like leather, stained in the bisexual colors. "Does this work for you?" Peter asked, holding it out.
"Yes, that is perfect." Lucian nodded, it looked nice, very well crafted. He held out his wrist and Peter put it on him with a grin. From what Lucian could see, Peter had bought himself a number of pins that had some rather lewd things written on them, and a few metal bracelets along with his own leather one to match.
"Fuck yeah, there we go, all bi and proud or whatever. Come on, the vendor said there's one of those cool mobile bar things driving down the streets, let's get on it."
Lucian rolled his eyes, of course, and he took Peter's hand, letting himself be dragged through the sea of excited, prideful humans.
--
I've never been to an actual Pride event that wasn't being held at a con, but from what I've seen of stories and videos, you can find some cool stuff from vendors at them. And lots, and lots of colors.

for the oc pride asks: 1 & 5 for your oc of choice and 20 for you?
🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈PRIDE THEMED OC ASK GAME🏳️🌈 🏳️⚧️
Gonna be answering the character ones with Valor and Flicker because they are the blorbos!
1. What's your oc's gender identity? What's their relationship to their gender?
Valor: Cisgender, and not something he ever really thought about. He never really had TIME to think about it in the coven since he was always either training or studying or working and even after he left and was trying to figure out who HE really WAS, gender wasn't something that was ever really questioned. He always felt comfortable in his gender identity. Flicker: They're nonbinary! Not sure about the specifics of their feelings regarding it since Sniff and I never discussed that, but they didn't realize it until they were 16, specifically because they didn't realize it was an OPTION. They'd met people with they/them and it/its and multiple pronouns before but they just. Assumed they'd ALWAYS had those pronouns. Once they found out that it was an option to be something other than what you were originally called, they very quickly took it. Other notes: I honestly think Flicker coming out encouraged Valor in his own identity, because like. They're CLONES. And Flicker coming out was just another way to prove that each one of them is different in their own ways. That they're their own people. He's not a man because his ortet was, he's a man because that's who HE is.
5. How did you figure out your oc's identity?
I realized that Valor and Flicker's answers to this one are kind of boring (all my ocs default to aroace and a lot of them are nonbinary since I am a nonbinary aroace) so instead I'm going with Nova, their sister. Okay for this one I'm just gonna. Post the screenshot, from before they became siblings.
I have a very clear memory in my mind of it going like: Nova: Oh, no, you're not my type. Valor: What's your type? Nova: Girls. Again, all my characters default to aroace and they rarely, rarely ever change. This executive action taken by the character herself shocked me so much I stopped cold just as I was walking onto the work floor. Guess she's a lesbian now!
20. Have your ocs helped you in self discovery? How?
Honestly? Not any of my ocs, no. In a way, though, you could say that rping as the canon characters in undertale helped, not because of their identities but because I grew up conservative christian and the friend I was rping with helped me realize that hey, actually, queer stuff is okay. Which then opened the door for me discovering that I'M queer, which then made all my ocs from then on queer in some way as well lol.

Trans Joy History🕊️ ~ Louis Sullivan (1951-1991) 👼
"Born in 1951, Lou Sullivan moved to San Francisco in the 70s, determined to live his life authentically as a man. 💪 In 1980, he underwent top surgery, a pivotal step towards embracing his true self.
Lou wasn't afraid to be himself. One of the first to live openly as both gay and trans. His family was surprisingly his first source of support. His mother bought him a suit calling him her son to the tailor. Siblings offered unwavering support while his grandmother mastered his new name and pronouns.
However, around the same time, Lou faced the harsh reality of the HIV epidemic, a threat looming over the LGBTQ+ community. In 1986, after his lower surgery, Lou received a diagnosis that shook the foundations of his world. 🌎 Despite the challenges, Lou remained resilient.
In his poignant diary entry, Lou defiantly declared, “I took a certain pleasure in informing the gender clinic that even though their program told me I could not live as a Gay man, it looks like I’m going to die like one.” (He passed away young from HIV/AIDs). 📖❤️
Lou fought for medical and social rights for transmen like himself. His a testament to the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Today, we honour his memory, acknowledging the impact he made in breaking down barriers and advocating for the right to live as one’s true self. 🙏🏳️⚧️"
