the amount of times i use the phrase "that's tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me" on a daily basis for simple things like bread and t-shirts is truly frightening

Mr. Darcy: She's tolerable but not handsome enough to tempt me *lovingly gazing at her across the room*

Quote
Yeah, the money. The lifeblood, the oxygen of this... this... this wonderful civilization that we have built from the mud. The money, the corpuscles of life gushing around this nation, this world, filling men and women all around with... with desire. Quickening the ambition to own, and make, and trade, and profit, and build and improve. I mean, great geysers of life he willed. Of buildings he made stand. Of ships, steel hulls. Amusements, newspapers, shows, and films, and life. Bloody, complicated life. He made life happen. He made me and my three siblings... Sorry. And, uh, and yes, he had a terrible force to him. And a fierce ambition that could push you to the side. But... But it was only that... that human thing. The will to be, and to be seen, and to do. And now people might want to tend and prune the memory of him to denigrate that force. That magnificent, awful force of him, but my God, I hope it's in me. Because if we can't match his vim, then God knows the future will be sluggish and gray.

Aroaces that experience aesthetic attraction:

[ID: Image from the BBC "Pride and Prejudice" mini series. Mr. Darcy is speaking to Mr. Bingley and saying:
"She is tolerable, I suppose. But she is not handsome enough to tempt me."
Referring to Elizabeth Bennet.
They are off in the background, in the foreground, Elizabeth Bennet is sitting, and smiling to herself.

11 for the Elucien asks!
Oh man, I feel like I've explored a lot.
Personally, when I saw that SJM rereads Pride and Prejudice annually and finds something new every time, it sparked so much inspiration for me. It led me to make a couple of metas because of how much Jane Austen challenged the idea of marriage without love in the 1700s. This can be translated into how a mating bond would work within that context.
I love Pride and Prejudice so much that I can see clearly how Elain and Lucien would adapt to that story.
I also have a theory/headcanon about how the Archeron sisters' mating bonds relate to Mind, Body, and Soul, and how Lucien is in tune with Elain's emotions. I feel like each sister represents these three aspects and how their mates react to that.
Lastly, I believe Elain and Lucien have been communicating using the bond, just like Feyre and Rhys have, but since we aren't in their POV, it's less obvious. This was a recent realization and I was super excited when I saw it ahaha.
Thanks for asking!

Jane Austen Charted #9
Guest Chart made by Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy of Pemberley

Handsome Enough to Tempt Me into Dancing, Graphed
X Axis: Women Observed
Y Axis: Level of handsomeness on a 10 point scale
The actual names of the women I chose not to be introduced to added at a later date after I was forced to meet them all.
Question for our guest: Mr. Darcy, do you have very high standards for women or do you really hate dancing?
Mr. Darcy: Both. Why would you make those mutually exclusive?

I don't know if this has already been done (sorry if so!), but I've been trying to figure out who to draw for this meme, and woke up in a cold sweat with this image in my mind this morning and needed to try to draw it 😅

the worst part about studying Austen film adaptations is quite apart from being a lesbian I just also have a severe hatred of Colin Firth as a guy anyway. Something about him aggravates me whenever he is on screen. So it is difficult to read criticism which is about his eroticism.

Why, when so many people secretly long to handwrite letters with calligraphy and quills, have we not reinstated the art form?

And I thought Colin Firth would be the only one I love but then here comes Matthew Macfadyen’s Mr Darcy and now I’m in love with two Mr Darcys
Cause there is HIM

And I cannot chose
the universal experience of beginning 'pride and prejudice' (2005) with the opinion that matthew macfadyen as mr darcy is perfectly tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt you and ending it bewitched, body and soul.

@pagetreader
"He's handsome, yes." She agreed, her tone more terse this time now that her smile was fading, now that she wasn't so agreeably laughing at their jests and observations.
"What is it you want me to say, Harriet?"
Tumblr media
"Just because I comment on a man's physique does not mean I'm expecting a grandeur proposal. He's not..." a pause, eyes looking upward in search of a proper adjective, settling on, "deformed... so therefore he must be considered handsome, yes?"
