All Legs 38W9508 by Daniel D'Auria Via Flickr: One doesn’t have to look hard to see the love between a dam and her foal. This colt is likely no more than a day or so old. He is still a bit wobbly but horses stand within minutes of birth. They have to in order to nurse, and they must nurse in order to survive. They usually begin trying to run within a day and this little guy is no exception. You can see from his stature, he is all legs. The legs of horses at birth are proportionately large compared to adults. The reasons for this are clear. #WildHorses

I was saddened to hear of the passing of one of the icons of the Onaqui wild mustang herd. We all called him One Ear, he had lost an ear in a fight many years ago. You will be missed my friend.

How does a Wild Horse get it's name?
Many, many wild horses in the American West remain unnamed, but those which are studied or followed by different groups, be they simply fans of these beautiful animals or advocates for their safety, these horses are given names for tracking and documentation, so people can follow their lives, trials and tribulations, successes and failures, as these beautiful creatures have rich lives that many people are fascinated by. So, how does a wild horse get it's name?
One method is the 'First Sight' method; used by fans of the Sandwash Basin herd amongst others, this method allows the first person that spots a new foal to name it, as long as that name has not been used before. Usually names are submitted to a database group along with a photograph, which is in charge of tracking the herd and then the name of the new baby is annouced. Sometimes if two people submit a name for a horse at the same time the horse will have both monikers, sometimes hyphenated but mostly with an 'aka' designation that lets people know the horse may be referred to by either name.
Another method is the 'Band Number' style of naming, used by the Onaqui herd. They assign each new horse born on their range a specific ID number, with each band having a unique range of numbers and letters to determine lineage. In this method, every known name for a horse will be recorded, with some horses being known by three or four common names! This method of naming allows for the horses to be named by the community in any way they desire.
The last method that I know of is the 'ABC' method. Used by the advocacy group for the Pryor Mountain herd, this method follows a set of naming rules. When a foal is spotted and a photograph is submitted, the group will choose from a list of names starting with the chosen letter of that year, like tropical storms. Last year the letter was H, so we had names like Hestia and Hector. This method is used to minimize squabbles over naming and confusion over what name the horse should be referred with.
There is no major organization or group of people cateloguing America's wild horses. They belong to everyone. If you're in the right area and you see a new foal, you could name one too.

Liberate the White House 4A0633 by Daniel D'Auria Via Flickr: He was just a foal last year when we first met. I was delighted to see him again this year. Perhaps someday I will own enough land to be able to give him and some of his band a home. It may only be a dream but nothing would make me happier. In these days of chaos, dreams can help keep our heads above the waterline in a sea of lies and raging tide of ignorance. #WildHorses #Lockhimup #LiberatetheWhiteHouse

Final Bids
Actually, this auction was too damn nuts for me to post prices like usual. So instead, have the top group:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
48 horses, over $1600, and there are so many more.
Other stats:
Every horse sold with 2 or more bids.
Only 10 horses stayed under $100.
The lowest halter started horse was $615, the lowest saddle started horse was $2600; highest was $2105 and $8505 respectively.
157 bids was the most on any horse, she is in the screenshots above and went for $2000+.

Mother and Child 3I8476 by Daniel D'Auria Via Flickr: There is nothing more tender than the bond between mother and child. The phenomenon isn't species specific. The moments may be brief and fleeting but they are there for those who choose to watch and wait. On their meandering path across the open plain, this young filly is comforted by a gentle nudge with mom. Though young horses in captivity will usually be weaned by 6 months, wild horses will sometime nurse up until about one year. This intensifies the bond between mother and child. #WildHorses

I recently attended a workshop photographing the wild Mustangs in the Rush Valley area near Dugway in Utah. These horses are descended from the Pony Express horses thet were simply let loose when the Pony Express Company lost it's contract with the Post Office. At present there the "Onaqui Mountain Herd" has approximatley 200 Mustangs on 43000 acres of federal land. (down from 500 or so a few years ago due to unpleasant actions by the BLM, a government bureau which is mandated to actually look after the land for the horses but which is in the pocket of sheep farmers and cattle ranchers) We spent four wonderful days photographing in the company of these fine creatures and here are some of my results. #mustangs #wildhorses #utah #rushvalley #onaquimountainherd #onaqui #herd #horses #dugway, #chrislord #pixielatedpixels #chrislordnyc #nycphotographer #exploretocreate #justgoshoot #photoediting #photoshop #everything_edited #livelysolutions #creative_shots #travelphotography #travel #huntsphotovideo #workshop ©2022 Chris Lord's Pixielated Pixels - So much more to see and\or purchase on my website, link in my Bio, thanks My Main Website https://ift.tt/nYdvg7i Fine Art Prints available at https://ift.tt/5ptZJ7O Exclusive Limited Editions at https://ift.tt/o6BgGC8 In England? One of the newest members of the Onaqui herd posing for a pic with its mom. It warms my heart and makes me sad at the same time to see these new babies being born in the wild. Knowing what’s coming for these beautiful creatures in the form of a roundup. The pending roundup is scheduled to start July 12th. Make your voices heard and let the government know to stop the inhumane way they round up these precious animals. (at West Desert) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPAyYLzh6Y3/?utm_medium=tumblr
