So @asrascum came up with this idea for a map of the world The Arcana takes place in (basically the Mediterranean Sea flipped upside down) and I loved it a lot, so of course I added to it my apprentice’s home village and surrounding villages/towns, with some explanation below the cut. Thank you for this inspiration!
Maere is from Riburgh, an agricultural community nestled along the banks of the Quiet River (which is actually a large and noisy river, someone messed up naming that one.) Riburgh is known for its vast fertile fields and abundant harvests.
The Nirorans are a nomadic people, known for their beef cattle and especially their wool sheep. No one ever really sees them except when they join the trade caravan to Vesuvia during harvest season. (Having territory that reaches pretty far South, they have had some run ins with the tribes that dwell down there, and thus have had to develop a sort of warrior class to defend their animals and people from attack.)
Copwell is a lovely little harbor town acclaimed for their textiles and jewelry. Rugs, tapestries, clothing, and especially their seashell jewelry are well known. They are the only of the four areas to not join the trade caravan that travels up to Vesuvia every spring and fall, as they have mastered sea travel and take their goods on ships instead. (FYI, Maere’s scarf that she wears every day is made in Copwell, of Niroran wool. It’s a real luxury in Riburgh!)
Garidge is a peaceful, joyful town south of Copwell, known for their skilled artisans and craftsmen. They produce beautiful handmade furniture, tools, trinkets, etc. They have buyers even so far as in Prakra! Garidgeans always welcome visitors with open arms.
