IFYLITA is an exquisite BL, from filming techniques to narrative framework (much like Until We Meet Again). It's about a gay man from our time who falls into the past, becomes a servant to a noble house, and falls in love with the heir. It turns out this has all happened several times before. Steeped in history and family drama it edges into lakorn (but not as much as To Sir With Love and with way less scenery chewing). This is an elegant and classy soulmates BL... from Thailand which normally doesn't even try for classy. The main couple (both as a pair and as individuals) were excellent, particularly Bright (Yai) whose eye-work acting style is a personal favorite of mine. Pity about the ending. Oh it wasn’t that sad but it wasn’t good either. This show could easily have earned a 10/10 from me except that it fumbled the… erm… balls in the final quarter. Argh. Whatever.

2021 Korea - WeTV

A boy cross-dresses to take his runaway sister's place as a bride to a shy scholar, turns out they like being married. A historical setting allowed this BL to use some seriously old fashioned romance tropes (arranged marriage, evil step-sisters, Cinderfella) but also modern BL stylings like fake relationship & secret identity (drag) plus some cute gay panic. It reminded me of 12th Night more than anything else which just happens to be my favorite Shakespeare play. For all these reasons, I adored it.

I don’t rec Chinese stuff often, because I believe in censoring the censors, but this show is one of my favorites of the post 2016 censored bromances. It’s two murder-gay assassins (pining sunshine/tsundere), and they are so insanely gay for two boys who will never be allowed to kiss. Tropes include: wuxia, soulmates, paranormal, historical, and fantasy elements.

This is a true lakorn (basically Thai tellenovella or soap opera) with scenery chewing performances, especially from the mother characters. Gone With the Wind + Days of Our Lives but gay. That said? I loved it: A glorious central brother relationship (the best, made me cry), het romances, class divide + gay *gasp* main romance - oh my word, the campy drama of it all! Arranged marriage, rebellion, cut sleeves, over-the-top death with curses and regrets, beautiful if inaccurate costumes, secrets unraveling, cover ups, sparkle murder, sex herbs, coils within coils including snakes and murderous green metallic sequins (is anything gayer on this earth?). It’s a WILD ride but it does end happy for our gay boys. A man cries when he finds DEATH GLITTER. Come on! You haffa watch it. That said, like Manner of Death I struggle to rate something on a BL scale when it patently isn’t a BL. So I ended up giving this exactly what I gave that show, 7/10 I enjoyed it a whole lot, but not as a BL.

I was nervous to watch this PondPhuwin vehicle but I liked it a lot! Doomed soulmates + paranormal time travel to fix the past. I’m happy for the outfits and the dancing (if not the singing). It’s not a bad premise and it’s nice to see GMMTV lean into its high production values for a change. I'd adore a full historical starring these two and this was definitely the best of the second series of Our Skyy. I don't think you have to have watched the original Never Let Me Go to enjoy this.

Whipping boy trope... literally, servant character takes the strap for the prince, who then makes him his bodyguard and lover when he becomes king. Low budget historical, comes off as kind of cosplay wuxia version of Irresistible Love, but we get (in the credits) an actual kiss, and they both live. So yay for small mercies.

A new employee at a film company encounters a director who claims to have lived 300 years and insists that they have to date (eat, hug & kiss) if baby doesn't want to die. It has a lot of Japanese elements, not the least of which are: an office setting, the fact that every character in this show is unhinged, and a killing of the gays. Featuring a gorgeous & stellar cast, TDWBMD should have utilized them less for melodrama and more for chemistry. This BL surprised me by going there with a lipstick mark AND an actually gay idol. But (you knew there was a but) while it's a unique twist on an office romance it is NOT a unique twist on the doomed red thread trope, resulting in it feeling less than the sum of its parts and ultimately unsatisfying. This might have also had to do with the fact that this was one of those KBLs where I felt how very short it was the whole time I was watching, like I was missing something constantly, in every episode. Worth watching for some but seriously flawed.

First Love Again

2022 Korea (historical flash backs) - Viki

A popular novelist who remembers his past lives meets his soulmate for the third time, only to find she has been reincarnated into the body of a man. This one started out a touch mean-spirited, but we eventually got a good kiss. The confession/rejection scene was justified and the reconciliation and ending was... fine. All in all, the pacing felt rushed and the romantic arc was underdeveloped. They go from like to love to boyfriends in a red hot minute. But that’s par for the course with Korea’s short form. If you don’t mind a heavy does of melodrama in your BL this one has a solid story with a strong concept that’s well acted and produced, making it a classic KBL with better than average chemistry but ultimately a touch forgettable.

This show was all over the place with uneven acting, narrative, and focus (sometimes it wanted to be a slapstick comedy, sometimes a depressing melodrama) which meant no one, actors or viewers, took anyone or anything seriously.... AND it’s a bromance. I was left wondering if SalHyung is now code for “they were roommates” in Kdrama historicals but otherwise largely apathetic and unimpressed. Korea, I now know you can do better. Do better.

Did he care? A snort came out of his mouth. He leaned on the door. "Oh, I see how it is." He laughed, scratched his neck. "I never expected you to whore yourself out for money. Tell me, is it preferable to the path I carved out for you?" Vegas could sense the disgust in his voice. He could also see it on Pete's face. I LOVED this ep. Loved it.

This is so delicious. I'm trying to think how I would have reacted if I hadn't already known that Phee knew Non. Would I have remembered this fact when Phee was revealed at the end of ep 6? But WHY did Phee lie to the group?! This is so delicious. The mystery.

what do u think is the purpose of porjai's character and specifically making her mork's ex

oh, this is such an interesting question!!!!

so i've been thinking about this all day, and i personally think phorjai’s character is gonna serve a few different functions in the story, which are:

1. provide insight into mork himself and his past. unlike day who is surrounded by people who have known him way before meeting mork (his mom, night, august, jee [film’s character], and even on [khun’s character]), phorjai is the only person linked to the mork who didn’t have day in his life. on a storytelling point of view, this is extremely useful because while communication is obviously essential in every kind of relationship, not always you can have a character be willing to reveal personal information about themselves to another. for example, in the trailer we see on being the one to tell mork what happened to day, because at that specific stage of their relationship mork will need to be able to understand day better, but day himself won’t be ready to open up to mork about it yet. hence the need of a third external character who can give at least some partial insight into the matter. when it comes to mork, phorjai is the only one able to do that.

2. play as day’s foil. in literature, a foil is a character whose purpose is to accentuate or draw attention to certain traits (both positive and negative) of another character, most often the protagonist. a foil offers insight into another character’s personality by opposition, and their different values and motivations often lead them to make different choices, highlighting a sort of “alternate” story for the viewers. not sure if i can explain myself, but it’s like.. in the trailer we have phorjai saying “speaking as your ex, im envious of day’s ability to make you smile.” this line alone speaks VOLUMES about mork’s relationship with phorjai vs mork’s relationship with day. it already tells us that mork is probably happier around day than he ever was while being with her, that day brings out the best of him and pushes him to grow, that their outcome is gonna be different (i.e. they won’t break up). maybe it’s not really nice to say, but phorjai is gonna show the viewers exactly why day is the right person for mork.

3. show that sometimes relationships end and it’s nobody’s fault. maybe im a bit naïve, but i’d like to think that phorjai isn’t in this story just to serve the male characters’ plotline. idk if she’s still hung up on mork, or if she just carries the heartbreak of their failed relationship, but i feel like their story is something that left a wound in her heart that hasn’t quite healed yet. i think her own personal journey is gonna be realizing that she doesn’t have to blame herself for how it ended, that sometimes you love someone and they're still very important to you, but you simply weren’t right for each other in that particular way and that’s okay. a failed relationship doesn't define your love life, you can move on and find real happiness with someone who fits you better (whether that's gonna be night or jee, we'll see).

Liveblogging notes for ep 2.

I see this is the "introduce supporting characters" episode. How fucking big is this place?! Everything is impractically high-tech. This is a weird, hyper-controlling harem environment they've got going -- and judging by what we heard in ep 1, that approach is not working. Porsche is having refreshingly normal reactions to all of this, so we are supposed to register the off-the-charts weirdness level.

Enter Chan, who presumably is paid enough to put up with all of this. "We don't like chaos" oh no do I have some bad news for you.

And this is Pete giving us the family tree. Aww, he's cute.

So wait a second. Between the actual guards and their support staff that's thirty people at least. Khun doesn't leave the house. Kim doesn't live there. Korn is ill, spends his time playing chess and doing crafts and presumably doesn't go out much. Kinn can't possibly get in that much trouble? There's having money to burn and there's literally burning it.

Porsche has decided to get fired and/or shot his first day at this job? Kind of enjoying how they are both "Thanks, I hate it" about this situation.

Kinn stressing that this particular hire was his dad's boneheaded decision. So these are Kinn's friends/peers from another family? (Is anyone at all in this show not gay?) With whom he gets along, unlike his cousins.

Obnoxious as Porsche been through this whole segment, I can't help but note that Kinn's eyes are glued to his ass in this shot, A+ acting choice there.

After trying non-stop all day, Porsche has successfully pushed a button. Yay! Everyone in the room is like "bro wtf was that????" which is honestly very normal of them.

I had no idea all of this stuff goes down in such a short time We aren't even 20 minutes into the episode?! Porsche is a menace.

There are STUDY SESSIONS. To be in the MAFIA. I am dying. Whose job is it to make the videos? Everybody around Porsche is taking all of this dead serious and he is wondering if he is being pranked.

Oh right, Porsche is a hand-to-hand guy. First gun. At least hanging out with a bunch of hyper-competitive jocks should feel more like his comfort zone?

Pete you legit sound brainwashed.

Enter Tankhun. This episode gets more and more unhinged. Porsche is busted again.

It appears Kinn has switched to coffee in this episode. Good idea. Has also found some chill from somewhere. Maybe because it looks like Porsche won't be in his hair for very long?

More intel, the first information that is at all sympathetic toward the family members: Khun has trauma from being kidnapped as a child, and Kinn is under just a teensy bit of pressure.

A "dress him up" bit, fun. Eye contact! Oh shit he's attractive.

The first half of the episode is fish out of water stuff, explains to the audience how the setting works and what we are intended to think about it (it's WEIRD). There's a tone shift leading into the party scene, though, which Porsche doesn't register but the audience does; Pete and Arm are genuinely trying to be helpful, and he is still being Like This. Supposed to show how much denial he's in about what he's gotten himself into? "Isekai'd character decides to pretend this is all a bad dream" is a common enough trope.

Assassin attack that is not what it seems? A test of defenses? Hmmm. Yes Kinn, he clearly is trying to get on your nerves and has managed to do so twice now.

More family to introduce. As annoying as Porsche has been, Kinn makes sure he doesn't get himself murdered. Damn these episodes are packed. How did they fit that many shifty looks around one table.

And here's Pete with more hinted backstory. And Porsche trying to be... conciliatory? Kinn being patient? Porsche makes terrible coffee? Bodyguard swap with Khun.

Drama between the older generation, I see. Interesting costume choices, the minor family being as a group less restrained and more colorful.

I liked this ep when it focused on Moth being a creep and unstable because I think I just like the genre more than the speedy, shallow fantasy they're doing right now. However, I'm so tired of women just being brutalized by their bfs and ex-bfs in shows where that's not a main focus.

The writing is pretty shallow for Dome and Khatha like we're gonna learn more about their history and such but we still barely spend any time on them and I can't even complain because I do like the side stories more but that's a problem, why should the audience care about random small stories more than the main characters? Also, blagh CGI and visuals

Overall:

I liked the first half with the artifacts and side stories more than the second half where they tried to do too much for a short runtime, not too much budget, and mediocre writing skills. I couldn't make myself care about Khatha or Dome and also it was funny how they kept emphasizing phi-nong with words but so romantic in action. I wish the fantasy and magic and parallel universes and time travel and cult and God and whatever else made more sense together.

Fëanor: he's one of my favourite characters. Even though he makes eyebrow raising decisions, I can understand why he makes them. He's just a very complicated person, someone whose both hurt and yet prideful. (Tolkien)

Fingolfin: bro is ambitious and not shy about it. His relationships with a lot of people are fascinating, we never really get how he feels about these things. He seems to genuinely want love but also holds a degree of resentment. (Tolkien)

Alicent Hightower: the show offered a more sympathetic perspective to her story, but I also wished they kept her agency from the books. In Fire & Blood, she is the ringleader of the Green Council and she's the one really pushing Aegon for the throne. That said, I love repressed catholic lesbian Alicent. (asoiaf/hotd)

Daemon Targaryen: I'm with grrm on this one. He's complicated, he never really does things solely for good or bad, selfish or selfless. His motives are a mix of both. Also, the way he goes down? Awesome. (asoiaf/hotd)

Zahard: I make fun of him a lot, calling him a jealous baby-killing incel, but he's so much more than that. Zahard is someone who started out as a bold, idealistic adventurer, but what is interesting about him is that he is very complacent to the idea of fate. From his young character, he strikes me as a "make your own fate" kind of person but he changes and it's implied an event happened. And we don't know what is it yet. (Tower of God)

Khun Aguero Agnis: bless this boy. He has ambitions, but no motivation (at least at first). His mentality of hiding his precious jewels (his loved ones) even though he might never see them again, is just fascinating. Also, his relationship with Maria. He has no regrets about helping her over his own full-blooded sister, but I think he regrets his sister's suicide because of it (Kiseia being his sworn enemy). Also his sheer fear and discomfort towards his father, despite having ambitions to overthrow him? Fascinating. (Tower of God)

Tsunade: Strong lady who can kickass. Naturally, I have issues with how women are written in Naruto but I like Tsunade. She ran away because of grief and being disenchanted with the Shinobi profession (absolutely valid), yes it was cowardly but it was also very human of her. (Naruto)

Jiang Cheng: he's a hot mess. His love and jealousy towards Wei Wuxian, exacerbated by his father's favouritism towards Wei Wuxian and his mother's unending dissatisfaction with him. There was genuine, brotherly love between him and Wei Wuxian but it was just not enough. (Mdzs)

Elizabeth Bennet: Oh, girlie's fun. But girlie also thinks she's smarter than she actually is and Jane Austen wasn't afraid to show that. Also her telling Jane "I fell in love with him after I saw his big ass house" and we don't know if she's joking or not. Anyways, I stan. (Pride and Prejudice)

Hotaru Imai: primary-Middle school girl will eat your food even if you're starving, but god forbid if anybody touches you. Touch her loved one and you're dead. She likes to invent, but she mostly uses her smarts to invent something that makes her daily life easier because she's lazy. What an icon. (Gakuen Alice)

He’s friends with Orome, he has a magic angel dog, he’s super close with Curufin despite the age difference, he’s friendly with his cousins and he gets Finrod killed, he’s an elegant speaker, his followers commit the most abhorrent crime of the kinslayings, he’s assaults Luthien, he’s close with Aredhel, he’s a renowned hunter and failure as a military general. There’s so many layers and contradictions and I love him. (Silm)

Elwing: She is my baby girl, and once I write my ‘conversations between Elwing and Maglor’s Wife’ fic, it’s over for you bitches. She’s just… so resolute, and so sad, and so angry, and she turns into a BIRD and I don’t know what more you want from me. (Silm)

 Percy de Rolo: this tragic white-haired anime boy with a gun has entranced me, mind body and soul. He really misses his family, you guys T_T (Critical Role, C1)

 Veth Brenatto: This woman is one of the most fascinating characters at the Critical Role table, and that she gets reduced to “Caleb’s mom” so often is fucking criminal, I LOVE her and want her to be happy and blow shit up (Critical Role, C2)

Hubert von Vestra: listen… I’m a sucker for the loyal (male) retainer to the driven at all costs, morally questionable (female) leader. And also they were platonic soulmates. Hubert is a spooky vampire who lives on devotion, and I fucking love him. (fe3h)

Catherine Morland: I recently remembered why Northanger Abbey is my favorite Austen book, she’s just a fucking hoot, I wish I could be her (Northanger Abbey)

The 35th floor began one hell of a ride. 

You slouched as you approached the bed, yawning in exhaustion. It felt as if every muscle of your body screamed in overexertion, begging to rest. Having to live on constant alert to prevent your ticket from being stolen was one thing – barely sleeping because of the stress resulting from the duel between Bam and the ancient Slayer coming closer happened to be another hardship on its own. Trying to distract yourself, you started spending more time with your teammates. Idle chatter helped with temporarily forgetting about the upcoming battle.

As days passed, it became harder to find a distraction; Wangnan's antics could only do so much. One thing you had to admit was that said man turned out to be surprisingly capable of lifting your mood. At first, you were so invested in listening to his stories you didn't even notice when Khun started giving you weird looks. The more time you spent with Wangnan, the more evident his unusual behavior became.

"Your boyfriend is acting strange again," Wangnan pointed out during one of your conversations. 

You raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?"

"He's staring at us. Like, all the time." The tone of his reply sounded as if you made him state the obvious. "Did you guys have a fight or something?"

You shook your head. You couldn't recall any instances of you two interacting recently, much less fighting.

Khun wore a curious expression as you approached him.

You sighed. Khun had every right to be upset, but he didn't need to be so petty about it.

"Can we talk privately? There's an empty car next to this one," you asked, wishing to resolve the issue swiftly and hopefully without an audience.

Khun shrugged.

"You weren't so keen on talking earlier."

You learned 'swiftly' wouldn't apply to your situation. There was only no audience to wish for left.

"Khun, I'm sorry for neglecting you. It's just that all that stressing about Bam's fight got the better of me. I didn't mean to ignore you."

Khun stopped playing with his hair. His attention switched to your face, blue eyes coldly analyzing every micromovement of your muscles. It felt like you were an opponent whose weak points he was trying to discover.

After a minute of awkward silence, Khun smirked.

"I accept the apology." You sighed in relief. "But it's not complete yet."

“Problem?” Porsche asked.

“No,” Big gritted out. He and Porsche would never be friends, at times they managed to scrape together some measure of civility, and right now he’d really like to punch him in the face. If it wouldn’t guarantee him a bullet wound when Khun Kinn returned. 

Kinn had been out of town for three days now and wasn’t expected back for another two. In his absence, Porsche held the reins to the business. Which included the meetings, and the paperwork, and the training. Big thought it was proving a bit too much for him to handle since the man had only gotten more and more aggravating as time passed. 

Yesterday, he’d almost taken one of the new trainees heads off for asking a question. Today, he was taking the senior bodyguards to task, all those that hadn’t accompanied Khun Kinn on his business trip were subject to the worst training experience of their lives. (Big might or might not be having flashbacks to the two times he and Ken had been allowed to punish Porsche years before)

On Big’s left, Pete stumbled and fell, his knee banging audibly against the concrete floor. “Fuck,” Pete cursed. 

“What was that?” Porsche snapped. Pete’s mouth snapped shut and he visibly forced himself to his feet.

“Nothing, Porsche, all good!” The man tried to say brightly but it was a clear struggle. Porsche didn’t seem to notice or care. He narrowed his eyes at Pete before giving one firm nod and turning to one of the other guys.

“Ok,” Pol huffed. “If Pete’s not safe…” then no one was, he left unsaid. “We need to do something.”

“I just said that,” Big sniped. “God, what crawled up his ass and died?” 

“Big,” Porsche’s voice was deceptively soft. And terrifyingly close. Big wasn’t sure when Porsche had time to get behind him but he was hovering just over his shoulder and had clearly heard everything. “I think this training is proving too difficult for you,” he continued, stalking around him until Big was forced to look him in the eye. “You’re excused.” 

Big straightened as best he could. “I am?” 

Porsche smiled and Big’s heart sank. “You are,” he confirmed. “Khun Tankhun is going shopping and needs an escort. Since you can’t handle today’s training, you will be on his detail.” Porsche twisted his wrist to check the time. “He’s leaving in 7 minutes. Don’t keep him waiting.” Big couldn’t force himself to move. “Oh, and Torn is heading today’s team. Make sure to do whatever he says.” Big narrowed his eyes. Torn had only been with the family for four months. There was no way Big would take orders from him. “Six minutes,” Porsche added, his voice hardening. 

Big went.

Later, after seven hours and too many stores to keep track of, Big found himself back in the training arena. This time, without Porsche’s supervision.

“What’s wrong with him?” Book, one of the new trainees asked. “I’ve never seen Porsche like this.” The newbies had a romanticized view of Porsche, having been subjected to the man’s laid back style and jovial attitude. They hadn’t been out on an assignment with him yet. The man changed when Khun Kinn’s life was on the line. 

“He’s tough,” Arm defended. “He takes his job seriously and if we aren’t prepared someone can get hurt.” Pol shot him a look. “But he has been taking it a little far the past few days,” he allowed.

“When does Khun Kinn come back?” Ken was trying to stretch out his shoulder. He’d done something to it after Big had been dismissed. 

“Two days,” Pete, Big, and Arm chorused. 

“That’s too long,” Ken objected.

Big snorted. “Okay. You call him up and tell him that. Tell him to get his ass home because his boytoy has lost his mind.”

Ken grimaced. “I wouldn’t phrase it like that.”

“Who’s the boytoy?” One of the trainees whose name Big had bothered to learn yet leaned forward, his brow creased. All of the senior bodyguards turned to him in disbelief. A few of the other trainees also looked curious but wisely didn’t chime in.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Ken bemoaned in English. “Idiots. All of them.” He groaned loudly. “Pete.”

“No,” Pete replied immediately. “I’m not saying anything to him.” He had ice strapped to his bandaged knee. 

“Why didn’t he just go with Khun Kinn?” Pol asked.

“To make our lives miserable,” Big grumbled.

“Something with his brother,” Pete answered.

Arm turned to him. “...do you happen to have his brother’s phone number?” Pete shook his head.

“Hey,” Pol snapped at one of the trainees. “You’re on Khun Kim’s detail, right?” The guy nodded slowly. “Where is he?”

“Uh,” the guy stuttered.

“Pol,” Arm sighed. “We are not stalking Khun Kim to get to Porsche’s brother. Porsche and Khun Kim would kill us.”

“It’s worth a try,” Pol defended.

“You’re on your own,” Ken told him. 

Pol deflated. “Anyone else got any bright ideas?” No one answered him.

The next two days were hell. The Theerapanyakun family has always been tough with high standards for their employees but in Kinn’s absence, Porsche seemed to have taken it as a personal challenge to drive them all into the ground. Half of them, more than half if everyone forgot their pride for a second, were injured enough that they probably couldn’t go on assignment, and the rest were driven near to exhaustion by the insane schedule Porsche demanded. The man himself probably hadn’t slept much either if the bags under his eyes were any indication.

When Khun Kinn walked through the front doors, the whole building seemed to breathe a sigh of relief. Everyone tried to hide it but it was audible and Khun Kinn definitely took notice.

He held a meeting with the top bodyguards as soon as he returned, wanting a full account of everything that had happened while he was away, and his eyebrows narrowed when he took in the sight of the banged up men before him. Big felt his shoulders hunch at the palpable disappointment in his eyes. 

“What happened?” Khun Kinn asked, his eyes trailing from Pete’s bandaged knee to Ken’s arm in a sling to the bruise on the side of Big’s face. “And why was I not informed immediately.”

The door shut behind them firmly and Porsche stalked past the line of men. Kinn’s eyes went to him immediately, his face brightening even as his eyes raked over the man, likely looking for injuries. “Porsche-” Kinn cut off with a huff when Porsche shoved him back onto the couch. He stripped off his jacket and bundled it into a ball and dropped it onto Kinn’s lap. “Porsche?”

“You asshole,” Porsche muttered. “I haven’t slept in five days.” He dropped onto the couch himself and laid his head on Kinn’s lap. “Continue,” he mumbled as he made himself comfortable.

Kinn stared down at him with a too soft look on his face even as he started carding a hand through Porsche’s hair. When Porsche was asleep not one minute later he looked back at the bodyguards in front of him. “Porsche?” He asked with a smirk.

They looked to each other before all looking to Pete. He nodded slowly. “He was uh-”

Kinn laughed. “Take two days off,” he told them. “I’ll be staying close to the house so there’s no need for everyone to be on duty.” When he looked back down at Porsche, it was in clear dismissal and they took no time in obeying.
