I think the reason I find Stolases two crybaby songs so jarring is that Blitzø does not fit this melodramatic epic of tortured romance, at all. He’s a lighthearted funny silly character with a bit of a temper. He just doesn’t fit Stolas and his narrative in any way. Their histories and their lives are not meaningfully or naturally intertwined whatsoever. It’s just brute force. And them both hating themselves, being poor at communicating and emotionally stunted, does not make them made for each other, it’s the opposite. And I’d argue Blitzø communicates very openly and consistently, stolas is just impossible.

They do not have romantic overtones outside of pity or superficial attraction, onscreen their chemistry is awful, it’s all forced sexual harassment “jokes”. In a sense the running gag with them is how utterly out of sync and incompatible they are. I think the anger and resentment toward Blitzø that Viv clearly has, just comes from this idea Vivienne hasn’t unlearned since that catcalling comic, she sees sexual harassment as a compliment you should make the most of. You could almost insert Blitzø and Viv into that comic with stolas as the creep, and replace “men are pigs” with “royal demons are the worst”

With that disgusting attitude and the decision to take all of Blitzøs ire toward stolas and pin it on Stella and via instead, I think you could safely say stolases story has mannosphere/red pilled messaging.

Honestly, they worked so much better as a duo -- and in a way, as a ship -- when Stolas was a rich asshole that Blitzo was forced to put up with after seducing once and their relationship was meant to be absurdly, comically awful. At no point in the show's history have they even been shown to be better people for knowing each other, or for spending time together, but Viv's stamping her feet and screaming that they are because they are in her head, I guess.

something interesting that i think i perhaps don’t talk about enough is now long i’ve been on the internet. prior to 2010 by a couple of years, during a time where forums/threads and blogs were the predominant form of “social” media. MySpace existed, but was primarily for sharing pictures and music; discourse was happening on forums and blog comment sections.

women have been using these forms of technomedia as long as they have existed, and feminist women have been using them to talk about feminism for just as long. the more prominent bloggers settled into their niches, but a wide variety of material was covered.

the thing i wish that i could impress upon young people, especially younger women who are growing up in the 24/7 twitter/instagram/tiktok era, is that not a single idea you see on these platforms is new.

i go on a lot about the dangers of social media, of being online every waking minute, of putting your face and personal info on the internet, and i stand by that, but i feel very strongly that this is more important. every argument you see being waged in a comment section on a post has been waged before.

the “sides” are called different names. the details of arguments shift with the times; we talk now about onlyfans the way women before us talked about internet porn the way women before them talked about video VHS rentals. but the core underlying principals upon which everyone’s belief systems rest? those are old.

the thing that i find particularly insidious now is that the arguments of people who formerly called themselves--openly, gleefully, and frankly as maliciously as possible--antifeminists, chauvinists, and misogynists, are now presenting themselves as feminists.

the belief that feminists, especially lesbians, are unfair to men, to the extent that they are said to be oppressing them? this was the view of misogynists before it was the view of pseudofeminists.

the belief that the sexual subjugation of the female sex class is “empowering” grew from both liberal feminists who refused to follow their own belief system to its logical conclusion and from misogynists who believe they have an unmitigated right to use women for their own sexual pleasure.

pull the threads of any modern pseudofeminist belief and follow them back through time, you’ll find a misogynist. Men’s rights activists, the mannosphere, PUAs, MGTOWs. They didn’t disappear. They didn’t stop sharing their belief systems. They didn’t stop harming the women in their real lives. They didn’t change their minds or their hearts or their ideas or their behaviors.

They changed their names, their faces, and their pronouns.

I don't think a movie like aliens could be made today without major backlash from mannosphere groups and a deafening amount of thinkpieces written about the implications of a completely unsexualized and ordinary looking female character and why or why not its problematic that she's masc or doesn't wear makeup and why or why not it's problematic that the male and female characters are treated basically the same by the narrative and the camera. was reading through the archive of wehuntedthemammoth (used to be a blog dedicated to making fun of the mannosphere, now more focused on trump, and run by a dude) and I found a thread where a bunch of previous commenters were banned for being “terfs”, even though they:

said they would accept trans women into women’s spaces within reason

didn’t ~misgender~ anyone

prefaced pretty much every comment with “not all trans women!!!!1!!!”

were objecting mostly to the devaluing of female-specific issues, the way that trans commenters often spoke over women commenters, the lesbophobia directed towards those who wouldn’t have sex with males, and the use of the word “terf” on the forum

only got hostile by the end of the thread because they were being attacked and threatened with bans (which ultimately went through) for calling themselves radfems or expressing gender critical beliefs

like it just goes to show that it doesn’t matter what you do. you can be nice to them, you can toe the line, you can self-flagellate, but if you dare to say, “you can’t change your sex” or “lesbians don’t have to have sex with penises” or “I don’t feel privileged for being female”, even if you say it with as many caveats as possible, you will be attacked. you will be threatened. you will be banned. although, really, while I used to lurk on this website back in my libfem days, I can’t say I’m surprised. it’s run by a white dude, so of course the pressing issues of white dudes are always gonna matter more to him. he’s not in any danger. he can sit on his high horse and condescend to all the eeeeevil terfs about how they’re Literally Committing Violence by mentioning xy chromosomes and it’s no skin off his nose.

I think the issue is you are taking essentialist things from 2 different sources tbh, men vs women, and expecting them to be the same. I’ll try to elaborate a bit, but bear with me, I feel like crap today.

From our perspective it’s more that men are naturally predisposed to violence in general than women and not just against women. There’s evidence of this both in animals and throughout history. I personally don’t agree or argue the remainder of that paragraph and I have not seen others either. In fact, I think a lot of arguments around rape I’ve seen explicitly mention the fact it’s often not even about reproduction, again both in animals and humans. So from that perspective it would make for a pretty crappy reproductive/evolutionary strategy.

I’d say the second paragraph has issues in that it conflates men and women. Again I don’t necessarily buy rape as evolutionary strategy, but in general what works for men may not be what works for women because men and women, like male and female animals, are different and have different interests. The question becomes why would women or female animals ever evolve to select something that is detrimental to them? It’s not like other things like our head size and hips for example, which gives an advantage even as it makes childbirth dangerous. Rape confers nothing to women, no advantage and if it confers nothing to us, how would it help the species in general? So even if what mras/the mannosphere says about rape is true, that it’s a valid male strategy, it makes no sense to reach this conclusion that women want to be raped. If this were the case, we would probably have less dead or injured males tbh.

As for female submission, if female submission was natural, you would not see so much resistance in both female animals and humans and you would not need so many systems, like gender, male violence, female exclusion, etc., in order to keep it in place. It would not need to be beaten into us and we would likely not have feminist movements around the globe.

I don’t think the remaining paragraphs have much bearing if any on what essentialist feminists are discussing so no offense, but I’m going to skip them. I do want to point out though that even if it is the case that men are predisposed to violence, this does not make patriarchy natural. It’s still something they set up, all over the world. And unlike these men who advocate what you’ve described here, no essentialist women believe that inherent traits or tendencies excuse said inherent traits or tendencies. Behavior is a choice and humans are plenty capable of going against nature.

I’d suggest looking at @abfabrad and her essentialist tag for more info on it from women’s perspective, it’s probably going to be a better source than what I can offer right now, but hope that helps a bit

It does still amaze me that not only do people on tumblr call themselves feminists while arguing that women are naturally weaker than men and that women’s oppression in general and rape in particular is biologically natural but then also have the gall to act like they are some kind of “more hardcore” feminist than us normal people.
