look. don’t get me wrong. i like sebastian, i think he’s a talented actor and a great dude and he has wonderful chemistry with anthony. he definitely made me love bucky, and he stars in the devil all the time (one of my favourite movies ever) and all that. that being said, this picture:

combined with the caption “find your zen, fuckerzzz” is a blatant mockery of eastern religion and culture. he did NOT need to post a picture of him making an exaggerated expression towards an idol of buddha, and he did NOT need to couple it with that caption. above that, he didn’t even need to post this in the first place.

you can love and stan sebastian all you want, but that includes calling him out on the weird white bullshit he pulls. this is not a good look! it’s another western white guy, no matter how famous or attractive or kind, making light of a religious symbol native to the east.

westerners (and a lot of easterners who grew up in the west/on western media) have become so desensitised to people mocking eastern culture that most of the comments on his instagram post were supportive of him or laughing with him about this picture+caption. i myself admit that i didn’t realise how wrong this is until i thought long and hard about it. we’ve gotten so used to buddhism being turned into this lighthearted aesthetic rather than a religion that people don’t actually see what’s wrong with this.

now, since i know i’m gonna catch flack for this, i will say that i’m aware that tommy lee, the person sebastian is playing, is/was a man of buddhist faith. does this change the context of this picture? somewhat, it lends context to why he’s posing in the first place. does this change the intention behind it? no, because this was 100% meant to be joking (as i don’t believe sebastian would be the kind of guy to be malicious towards buddhists and blatantly mocking of them). does this change the fact that it’s still a disgusting mockery of buddhism? not one bit, this here is another white man making light of an eastern culture’s religion. it’s a perpetration of white ignorance.

does this mean you should stop stanning or liking sebastian? not at all! i simply believe that fans need to hold him accountable for things like these. as a POC, i’m tired of educating white people on basic shit, but i believe he didn’t have bad intentions behind this post, which changes how i feel about the situation a bit. we just need to hold our faves accountable for the shit they do.

Though I agree with the anon that Seb is grown and he should be held accountable for his actions, he has taken responsibility in the past for actions people felt was offensive. I think he’s dealing with both sides of the coin right now:

1. People are gonna blame her because she is problematic and known to block and delete comments and so they believe he and his team are doing the same and not making him accountable. But how many times does he need to see fans hate that he traveled in the middle of the pandemic. I believe he gets it by now.

2. Tommy Lee role, I think this role is playing a major part in a lot of what we have seen recently. If he’s not posting about TFATWS he’s posting about TL which is normal for him to do check his feed, but the Buddha post got a whole lot of flack, rightfully so it was inappropriate but it’s not my job to speak on it being inappropriate it’s the job of those whose culture/religion it may have offended to speak on those instances. A blog on here made a good point that the “fuckerzzz” at the end of the caption for that post is how TL addresses his fans. The man has fully immersed himself into a role, that’s his job. We don’t have to like it but that’s what he’s getting paid to do.

3. The n-word video, I’m still mad at this, as a black woman because far too many non black people blew his like of that video fully out of proportion. They misconstrued the context and instead of actually watching the video and being mad at the person repeatedly saying the word (while acknowledging he shouldn’t be saying the word) they were mad at Seb who liked it and probably actually watched video in it’s entirety and probably learned something from it. It’s moments like that, where I know if I was a celebrity and I know that to my fans the root cause of your anger towards me is because of who I am in a “relationship” with, what is the point of defending myself. He’s damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t.

He should be held accountable, but a lot of the flack he is receiving is not because of things he has done, it’s because he is associated with her and that’s where people mess up. He hasn’t technically done anything recently that is cause for explanation or apology. But people are digging things up to further associate him with her.

Sorry mod for this long post, but I get super passionate about a lot of these issues because the people who are “upset” sometimes don’t even know what they are upset about.

Anon, don't apologize for a long post. I enjoyed reading this, and it was really helpful to me as I am just learning about some of these controversies.

As for traveling during the pandemic, if the relationship is a publicity stunt, he honestly had no choice. Because the relationship is for business purposes, work was the main reason why he traveled.

For the Buddha post, I agree. I'm not saying that the post wasn't offensive to some people, but I do believe he (or his team) was trying posting in-character and it backfired because people focused on the religion aspect of it.

I can't speak on the video he liked because I haven't seen it, but this whole tip goes to show that we subconsiously will think things without knowing the full story behind it. We tend to hyper-focus on the "offensive" part of it, but we don't realize what the intention of the action was.

Just because he commented doesn't mean he wasn't upset about what happened last weekend. I'm sure he wasn't overly happy.// i could be completely wrong since he does seem to want to be an ass lately, but after that last fuck up of a photo he posted and since he’s now being compared to her saying they’re both cultural appropriators, i imagine he is at least some what annoyed by it. He’s ignorant yes, uneducated yes, but i do think it would upset him to be labelled that (as naive as that may sound)...

I agree. He doesn't like to be thought of badly, he has said this in the past... it is a Leo thing also. So I'm sure being compared to her in a negative light doesn't give him a good feeling.

However he really needs to check what he is posting before he is posting. I don't think he meant the disrespect, but once he saw people were reacting, maybe he should have deleted it. Just my opinion. I know he was pretending to be Tommy, even in the comment because Tommy calls his fans Fuckerzzz, all the time, but the joke definitely fell short. This is not a world that you can make jokes around serious things anymore.
