note: league of legends/arcane spoilers if you haven’t seen all of s1. my viktor will be heavily show based as there are a lot of differences between show & standard game canon. i'll probably make a side verse of og canon but we shall see

history

   viktor had a rough childhood. he grew up in a poor family, living in the pulluted undercity of zaun. he’d been born with a limp in his right leg & was forced to walk around with a cane. it made it difficult to play with the other children, but despite his solitude & physical limitations, he was absolutely brilliant. he was inventive with a knack for constructing all manners of machines in his free time.

   one day he’d been playing with a model boat in the river & stumbled upon an underground cave with a hidden lab. it was there he met singed, a zaunite alchemist who took an interest in viktor’s craftsman ship. while viktor was initially afraid of the man, his curiousity got the better of him when he stopped a strange creature named rio.

   singed explained that rio had a fatal & “rare mutation” that he was trying to save rio from. viktor took a liking to the creature & offered to help with singed’s experiments. but their partnership was short lived as viktor realised that singed’s methods of keeping rio alive had left her in a constant state of torture & agony. horrified, he left the lab in tears. but despite that trauma, viktor was determined to improve the lives of others through his inventions.

   years later viktor’s studies had caught the attention of professor heimerdinger who was the dean of academy of piltover. viktor had no money or status to offer, but heimerdinger saw the potential in him & offered him a scholarship & a place in the academy. this would give viktor more resources & research opportunity than before, &, in the hopes that his inventions could reach people across the world & save lives, he accepted heimerdinger's offer & left the undercity for piltover's academy.

   while ( due to his status as a poor zaunite ) viktor became arguably more of an outsider now that he was topside, he never let it take away from his ambitious goals. after excelling in his studies, he soon worked himself up to being heimerdinger’s assistant. however, he found himself wanting more, unsatisfied by simple accolades sanctioned by the safe playing professor. he wanted to discover something truly ground breaking that would change the world for the better.

   one day he meets jayce talis, a brilliant, if slightly egotistical student, who was experimenting with magic technology — an act forbidden by the council of piltover. it was this work that got jayce expelled from the academy, but viktor was inspired. he managed to recover the notebook containing jayce’s “hextech” theory before the notebook along with all his other work was destroyed “for the good of everyone”. united by a vision of progress, the two became fast friends & when they were able to prove to the council that jayce’s theory was correct, the hextech research was approved.

 over the next few years, viktor & jayce worked to create new hextech inventions to improve the lives of people across the city. hexgates were built to improve trade, making many of the piltovan upper classes rich. however, viktor believed that hextech could be used to improve not just the lives of the nobility, but the lower classes & the undercity of zaun as well. jayce also shared this view, & the two developed the hextech gemstone as a safe way to make hextech inventions available to all people. however, following advice from heimerdinger, jayce chose to keep these projects a secret to the public, which led to an argument between him & viktor. the rift between the two friends widened when jayce was granted a seat on the council, & jayce left viktor alone with their research as he became more invested in politics.

   things worsened for viktor when his health began to fail him. his body became frail & haggard as he spent many nights of research without eating or sleeping. after collapsing in his lab, the doctors informed viktor that he was terminally ill, which was likely a result of the undercity pollution where he grew up. while viktor was unsurprised by his prognosis, he regretted that there was so much more he could've done to help humanity if he had more time.

   desperate, viktor began to look for a cure to his disease, & discovered the hexcore, an adapting hextech matrix that reacted to organic matter. viktor believed his discovery could be the key to some kind of "evolution" that could extend his life, but heimerdinger, fearful of the hexcore's power, declared that viktor's experiments were dangerous & had to be destroyed. jayce vowed to protect viktor's experiment, but with his body rapidly failing him, viktor realized he was running out of time & might have to turn to more drastic measures.

   seeing no other option, viktor returned to singed's lab in the underground cave, declaring that now, decades later, he finally understood what the alchemist was trying to tell him. following singed's advice, he used a combination of shimmer, the hexcore, & rune magic to fuse his leg to his metal brace, making it stronger & mechanical. however, these experiments came at a cost when viktor accidently vaporized his assistant, & viktor blamed himself for ignoring heimerdinger's warnings. out of guilt, viktor attempted to end his own life before being stopped by jayce, & viktor made him promise to destroy the hexcore at any cost.

   the season ends with viktor & jayce with the council to propose a peace treaty between piltover & zaun. however, jinx fires a rocket to blow up the entire building, leaving the fates of viktor, jayce, & the councilors unclear.

Zico, author of The Night Abridged

You were supposed to be a sacrifice but instead of dying, you find yourself being the new vessel of an old Eldritch Horror who offers you power that no other could have for a little taste of freedom. Unfortunately for you, your captors had other plans for you and decided to utilise your newly given abilities as their own personal puppet.

After being sent out to hunt down a traitor of The Court of Night, a series of unfortunate events sends you off the intended path and onto another where you then find yourself fighting an evil greater than the ones you know.

Will you remain a puppet of The Court or will you cut the strings that tie you to them?

[INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT UNDER THE CUT!]

Q1. Hello! Could you tell us a little bit about to yourself and your project?

I actually never quite got into writing but then I discovered IF a few years ago and was like "oh wow, these are great fun!". I love how you could discover new routes and how each character reacts differently to the choices you make. I had a bunch of ideas in my head and I thought the best way to get them out was to write them down and share it with people. Discovering IF really helped give me the motivation to start writing.

I want to say that there will be a good bit of angst in my IFs. That stuff is like oxygen to me. It sends a rush through your veins that can be addicting and it's incredibly satisfying to see the reactions of people it was intended to have ;)

The Night Abridged is about someone who happens to become a vessel for an eldritch horror named Alzurahm after a failed ritual. I've always loved horror and supernatural themes because I think they just leave you so much room to create your own creatures or powers and it's a great way to get all those ideas out no matter how little it may seem.

Exurgo is about an mortal turned immortal who wakes up to a modern world after seven hundred years and has to conceal whonor what they are. But something from the past seems to follow them. I'm just a sucker for powerful MCs who have to act like they aren't. I think it's very fun and I love the surprise on character's faces when they discover another character is not exactly "normal".

Q2. What inspired your current project?

A little bit of everything really. I'll probably be watching TV and see an object that becomes a seed of inspiration, or simply the tone of a film or story, or the soundtrack of a game. Once that little seed is planted, it sort of just grows until it becomes something bigger.

If I'm being completely honest, The Night Abridged was influenced by the artwork and music of "Arcane". Everything about it was just so beautifully made. Exurgo was influenced by the soundtrack of the game "Deathloop". The whole vibe of that game is just brilliant.

Q3. Do you pull from your own identity for inspiration? How has that been reflected in your work?

Both my parents are from Malaysia but they moved around a lot for work and thus so have I. We lived in Korea for some of my adolescent years before moving to Ireland where I spent most of my school years there. Then we moved to Amsterdam for almost a year and we recently moved to the UK. Every move was always a big change and took some time getting used to so I was always bombarded by how different each country was.

But to stop myself from straying from the question any more, my answer is that I don't think my identity reflects on my work as much as my surroundings do. I tend to just soak in the vibe of something and work it into my stories.

Q4. What are you most excited about your project?

The drama…

In real life, I'm about as undramatic a person can get but that's mostly because I daydream a lot about fun little situations. One thing I'm most excited for are the reunions in my IFs. I absolutely love reunions. Some could be tearful and just so heartwarming; others can be twisted and cruel *wink wink*.

I very much love the reactions of character when they reunite with people. I don't know if it's just me but I always find myself waiting in anticipation for a reunion and the relief (or uncaged rage and shock) you feel after is so exhilarating.

Q5. What has your experience writing an IF and with the IF community been like?

So far it's been good! Everyone has been very kind and supportive, which always pushes me to be better with my work. Though from what I've seen on other IF blogs, there are some anons who seem to be a bit…entitled to a story that doesn't belong to them and always end up saying very unappealing things to the authors. It's cruel to make comments at someone who built up the courage to even share their work with you in the first place and in turn can becoming very demotivating to some even if they don't quite show it. But thankfully there are many other people who are incredibly kind and just stomps out the mean words of anons.

My experience in writing an IF has been a bit challenging if I'm being honest. It's mainly because I'm new to coding and I forget some things lol. I'm also learning twine as it gives more freedom to the customisation of the interface and I always find myself playing with the code for a long time because it's so fun.

One of the best experiences from writing IF has to be learning a completely different language that is called coding. It's very relaxing until you're stuck at a piece of code.

Q7. What piece of advice would you give to fellow creators?

I feel like many people say this but I'll say it again. Don't be afraid to put out whatever it is that's on your mind. Maybe it's a small piece of lore in your world that seems insignificant but it's not! Nothing you do is small if it brings joy to the people you share it with. 

Even if you think that no one would like your story, I can say for a fact that it is not true. Everyone has their own tastes, that is true but I can guarantee that there are some people out there that will absolutely soak up every little detail of your story.

AUTHOR’S NOTE ▸ hello! thank you for checking this preview out ♡ this fic is part of @renhyucks​’s “the first” collab and my installment is “the first date” :’) excited to write the rest !!

YOU HAD NEVER EVEN MET DONGHYUCK IN PERSON. Your opinions and images of him were constructed from Mark’s absurd stories during shared shifts. You later found that all your friends knew the infamous Lee Donghyuck, and they all had stories to share with grins on their faces. Thus, you figured that he must have been a hot commodity, but Mark’s Tales of Lee Donghyuck weren’t very promising in terms of his character.

According to your coworker, Donghyuck once got banned for life from a roller skating rink. He was so terrible at balancing on wheels that he ended up crashing into an entire snack rack, knocking down the entire shelf and ruining all the food that was neatly stacked. That spurred a domino effect and caused several other shelves to tumble over.

Fun guy, you thought.

Then, you found out he was the star player of the university’s hockey team. You were dying to ask how someone could be so pathetic at roller skating but be perfectly fine at ice skating, but you withheld your judgement.

You didn’t have a face to put to the name, so you just imagined different personas of Star Boy (you heard Renjun call him that once and it stuck). Sometimes he was a loud frat boy who often blacked out before the party even started, and sometimes you even visualized him as some lanky teenager with unfortunate luck. Mark had never shown you pictures of him, nor did you care enough to look him up on social media, so you stuck to the images you created in your head.

That was, until he was standing on the other side of the register, waiting for you to take his order.

You hadn’t expected to meet Donghyuck so soon, but you wouldn’t have realized it was him until you heard Mark yelp in surprise behind you. It sounded like your coworker was scared that his best friend showed up to his workplace, and you weren’t sure what to make of that.

“What are you doing here?” Mark squeaked out.

“Getting a drink?” Donghyuck scoffed, an incredulous edge to his tone. “Loosen up, Mark. I was gonna see you in the apron sooner or later.”

You were all for friends catching up and poking fun at each other, but you had a line of customers who didn’t seem too happy about Donghyuck taking his sweet time. The last thirty minutes before closing were always the busiest with everyone rushing to get their orders in. On top of holding up the line, Mark’s friend started stealing glances at you (probably expecting you to ask what his order was, but he had that look), so you cleared your throat.

“Welcome to Starbucks,” you greeted cheerily. “Can I take your order?”

Donghyuck grinned brightly, and you could only think about how pretty he looked when he smiled. “Can you make it for me too?”

You glanced back at Mark, who was rolling his eyes and getting ready to take over the register after you were done. He set down the last drink he made on the counter and shot you a wary look.

“Sure,” you replied, a little unsure of Donghyuck’s intentions. You picked up a Sharpie and uncapped it, hand hovering over the cups. “So what would you like?”

“A venti”—you grabbed the largest cup and Donghyuck’s menacing grin got bigger—“matcha green tea frappuccino with a strawberry smoothie base, coconut milk, two pumps of caramel, one pump of white mocha, two pumps of toffee nut syrup, three espresso shots, topped with whipped cream and a caramel drizzle.” After noting the horrified look on your face, Donghyuck added, “Oh, and extra whip.”

“It’s five minutes to closing,” you replied, already tired of Star Boy.

You thought it was some sick joke, but the menace ended up paying for his drink down to the penny. (You wished you were joking, but he paid in cash and even pulled coins out from his pockets). Donghyuck’s cheery smile didn’t die down as Mark took over the register, and he moved to the waiting area as you stepped to the side. His eyes never left you as you tried to wrap your head around his bizarre order. Examining what you scrawled down, you decided to bite the bullet and get to work. Although you suspected that Donghyuck was messing around, he was a customer and it was your job to make his drink.

You had never been so hyper-focused on making a drink. Most of the time, you just let your body take over. This time, however, you were trying to figure out how a star hockey player’s diet could make room for so much sugar.

Surely there had to be a punchline.

You swallowed down the snarky remark thick on your tongue and slid the drink across the counter. “One venti green tea frappuccino for Donghyuck!” 

Before your hand could let go of the drink, you felt Donghyuck’s fingers circle around yours. You were already turning to take more orders, but you froze in place and stared at his hand.

“Thanks for the drink,” he said, the corner of his lip hitching up. “Let me walk you back after your shift.”

You balked. “I live in the apartments on the other side of campus.”

Donghyuck grinned, eyes twinkling under the dim light. “It’s a date then.”

That wasn’t the punchline you were expecting.
