When Ludwig was around fifteen, maybe sixteen, physically speaking, he had his first crush.

The individual in question was a young soldier he’d come to know. The young man was friendly, good natured and always kind to Ludwig, leading to a friendship to grow between the two of them, and not too long after, Ludwig’s affections finding themselves directed towards this young man. Of course, at the time feelings such as his were discouraged (actually criminalized for the majority of Ludwig’s existence if my facts are right), but Ludwig was young, and the guy was a sweetheart. Inevitably, Ludwig grew a little too attached and much too hopeful.

Take a moment with me to visualize a certain summer evening from more than a century ago.

Two young men, engaged in conversation, move down the country lane as the sun’s dying rays bathe the landscape in a golden light. Of course, to Ludwig that isn’t what he’s concerned about as beautiful as he knows his country is. It’s the young man strolling beside him, explaining to Ludwig the wonders of the little things of nature, his handsome, smiling features practically aglow with soft sunlight. Ludwig finds it funny that that’s their topic of conversation when all he wishes to say is how he thinks it’s really his friend who’s a wonder of nature, but of course, he refrains, and he tries not to remember the little hand brushes and sweet smiles and kind words spoken in hushed tones. It’s nothing. Or at least, that’s what he wants himself to believe.

They come to a rock with a view overlooking the meadows and the forests; the sound of running water is not far off. After a moment of admiring the scene before him, Ludwig’s young friend asks him to sit with him. Ludwig does, and for a moment it’s quiet. Ludwig tries to enjoy the sublime beauty of the landscape spread out before them, but eventually, he can’t help himself, and he sneaks a glance at his friend, only to find himself staring back. Hands touch. The world becomes a blur. Ludwig has his first kiss.

Their little friendship teeters on the edge of something more, but nothing drastic happens. The walks, the tender touches, the conversations; they don’t stop. Nothing more can happen, and never in public. They kiss once more, but eventually his soldier friend is sent off to join the war. He never returns, and Ludwig is informed that his friend has been killed in action. Ludwig is shocked, but moreso, he’s upset. He’s upset with the war for taking away his friend. He’s upset with the commanders who sent his friend off to his death. He’s upset with fate and God and the rest of the world for not allowing some of the only good things left in this world to live, but most of all, Ludwig is upset with himself.

He realizes that he should’ve been aware that nothing could last forever, that they could never have been together for a myriad of reasons, not only but including the facts that they were both men, the fact that he was a Nation, the fact that happy endings just didn’t work for people like him. It comes around a time where Ludwig begins to realize feelings are far too easy to hurt, and it expedites the process of learning to wear armor over your heart lest anything like this should ever happen to you again.

And that, my friends, is the story of Ludwig’s first crush.

What he needs in a partner is someone who’s willing to push gently but firmly because of how stubborn Ludwig is while still respecting his boundaries and understanding how far they can go before he becomes super uncomfortable.

Alright, I’m going to cheat a little because I’ve told Rainy ( @self-engineered ) and Ame ( @musikleiter ) this, but Ludwig plays the cello. His fingers are kinda fat, but it’s alright because fat fingers are good for cello.

The entirety of WWII, and the following dissolution of Prussia as he blames himself for it.

His inexperience combined with the fact that he’s the one people expect to lead. He’s afraid of screwing it up, and wish he knew more.

To save? Probably Gilbert. He’d do a lot of things for his brother.
