HGUC 1/144 Anaheim Electronics Prototype 5th Gen Minovsky Flight System Mobile Suit RX-105 "Ξ Gundam" ("Xi Gundam")

Xi is here!!! I was lucky enough to get this as a birthday present last week and had to get going on it immediately.

The Xi is a really hefty kit, with a gigantic box and over 17 runners (many of which are duplicates for right and left sides). It's incredibly detailed, with great colour separation, however there are some major omissions.

Several orange colour correcting stickers are included, as well as some red and grey ones for the back skirt. I also had to color in some of the vents with my grey gundam marker. Usually I'd paint colour inaccuracies, however I didn't have the right shade of orange, so I let it slide. There's also a large white sticker for the shield's hidden particle canon which feels pretty egregious. There are also the usual eye and sensor stickers, and I did paint the inside of the thrusters red.

Xi comes with plenty of extra parts, including two beam saber effects for each saber, a large beam rifle, two open fist options, two open hand options, and a trigger finger options, as well as a shield and a connector for an Action Base 1. There's also a convertor part to transform the stabilizer wings into flight mode.

Flight mode is achieved mostly just by rotating and sliding parts of the shoulder armour, creating two large triangular wings. The feet rotate downwards, although you do need to parts-form some of the ankle stabilizers.

The wings are removed, and reattached with a separate part to create the final form.

The kit looks just as cool in regular mode, with the fight armour rotated down. The large beam sabers and shoulder armour really accentuate Xi's unique silhouette, as does the cockpit section, resembling Xi's face.

Inside the knees and elbows, as well as the back skirt, you can see moulded-in funnel missiles. There's a separate set which allows them to be displayed in a fired mode, but it unfortunately wasn't available.

The kit is pretty flexible, although it's difficult to rotate the arms due to the shoulder armour. All the joints feel pretty secure as there are no polycap parts so the kit's weight never gets in the way.

The beam sabers are both double-sided, with a smaller blade that can extend from the bottom. They're moulded in Bandai's usual fluorescent green and look really nice. I think the larger one is reused from the Kshatriya, another equally large kit.

Overall I had tons of fun building this, and it was really cool seeing how big it was, almost reaching the size of a MG. It's got a super unique looking design, breaking a lot of the tropes of previous gundam designs that make it pretty refreshing to build. Despite the size everything goes together really quickly.

If you can find it, I recommend giving this one a try!

Oh my goddd i'm gonna have to pass on the second question just because it's such an enormous thing for me to consider and I have like 50 things I wanna do i'd have to laboriously list lol but uh as far as favourite mechs goes -

Almost too many to list from Evangelion alone but specific mentions go to the Mark 6 and .07 13's Awakened (the white) form, the MP Evas from EOE and both Armaros and the Heurtebise from Evangelion Anima, almost all of which belong to Ikuto Yamashita

Idk! I could keep listing mechs for hours - the Skullma and Zwarth from Dunbine, the Guyver Gigantic if that counts, it goes on forever. Mechs have an incredibly important place in my understanding of design.

Super Robot Rollcall: Londo Bell's Late Conscripts

Hathaway Noa

Bright Noa's young son. One of Tomino's favorite archetypes, Hathaway is an aimless young boy looking for purpose who finds it in the wrong place, and suffers for it. He`s kind at his core, but his impulsive nature can lead him to commit mistakes that he can never take back...

He and Quess are often maligned by those who don't like their subplot, but i'm not in that camp! I like them quite a bit, Hathaway especially. I really ought to get around to reading his novel...

Hathaway's case isn't nearly as bad as Kayra's, but he's still not particularly good. Middling offensive stats, average at best Evasion and Accuracy, and once again, an uncharacteristically high Defense stat for a UC pilot (again, emphasis on this qualifier; he's no Super). His Spirit Commands are also similar to Kayra's; no Focus, and a lot of Commands more fit for a Super pilot.

On the brighter side, on top of having slightly better stats than Kayra all around, he also happens to be a Newtype! Though he's obviously not on Amuro's level, it helps his survival chances a lot. He also gets Blocking up to level 5, which while not as impressive as Kayra's feat, is still notably high.

However, all of this is still hampered by the fact that he won't be with us to the end of the game, and for basically the entire time that he'll be around, he'll be stuck in the Jegan, one of the worst machines in the game. Poor Hathaway.

Fun Fact: Despite being playable in SRW 4, in F/Final, he is reduced to an NPC. According to an interview with Takanobu Terada, long time SRW producer, on a Sega Saturn SRW F Final strategy guide published by Keibunsha ("セガサターン必勝法スペシャル スーパーロボット大戦F完結編を一生楽しむ本", page 124), this is both because he wasn't a formal member of the Londo Bell in the source material, and because he felt it was a cop-out to include Hathaway without his Ξ Gundam from the Hathaway's Flash novel (which wouldn't appear in SRW until SRW V in 2017). This might be part of the reason his appearances after that point became quite scant, notably having a 12 year gap between his appearance in this game, SRW R, and his next appearance in SRW Z3.

Chan Agi

A technician for the Londo Bell, Chan helped Amuro with tuning the v Gundam. Amuro trusts her and her skills a lot, and in turn, she regards Amuro highly, which led to them becoming romantically involved.

She can be quite curt when she's serious about her work, and has something of an impulsive streak (like most Tomino characters!). This multifaceted nature seems to make Quess distrustful of her in the movie as yet another dishonest adult, but she seems to truly care for Amuro.

Chan's statline is very similar to Hathaway's; it's mostly average, landing them in the limbo inbetween Amuro and Raul's incredible statlines, and Kayra's abyss of despair. Like Hathaway, she's also a Newtype, with very similar growths to his, but unlike Hathaway, her offensive stats are absolutely abysmal.

Her big differentiating factor, however, is her Spirits list; On top of starting out with Focus and learning Valor soon, she already comes pre-equipped with Luck, meaning we can finally make some cash money dollars off of bosses again!

Much like Hathaway, she won't be with us to the end, and she's also effectively unit-locked, though to the far less sad Re-GZ.

Fun Fact: Due to the prevalence of both CCA and Zeta Gundam in SRW, the games have a sort of tradition of making Chan and Beltorchika fight over Amuro in a fierce love triangle. In Shin SRW, which did not feature Zeta, she instead competes over Amuro's affections with... the Banpresto-original SRX Team's Aya Kobayashi!?

That one is the RX-105 Ξ Gundam or Xi Gundam as people have taken to calling it. That's Hathaway's personal Gundam in the movie, it's BIG, but somehow still smaller than Penelope by almost 30 metric tons. Also its flight form is awkward looking as all get out:

Why go to therapy when you can become an ecological terrorist while still pining over the girl who left you to join a TOTALLY not gay man with a death wish who then was blown up in a mobile armor before said man and his object of obsession ascended to a higher plane of existence? Ignoring these two women who're obviously holding a candle for you the entire time:

So, Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway. It's the best Gundam has been in decades and I'm pleasantly surprised

(This review is spoilers-free)

The Good:

This is the best-directed Gundam production in decades. The storyboarding and storytelling in general have this cinematic quality you don't see very often in “anime films”. And it's all so great. The way it manages its atmosphere, its pacing… It's all very well done.

The characters themselves don't feel like anime cutouts, they feel like characters. Especially Hathaway himself. I mean, most of the film revolves around him so of course he had to be a strongly written character with complex motivations and a traumatised psyche. And since this is an adaptation of Tomino's novels, it works quite brilliantly. This isn't Fukui and, err, Full Frontal, and thank god for that.

The character animation is very strong. I feel like the film truly shines when its characters don't talk. Not that the dialogue is horrendous, far from it, but they are so expressive in such subtle ways. Of course, Gigi is the one who stands out the most.

The character design is excellent. Hathaway truly looks like his mother's son, Gigi is, well, Gigi, Kenneth embodies the concept of the military man perfectly, all of these characters form a cohesive ensemble and no one is out of place, none feel like they come from an entirely different universe, and that's great.

The plot moves at the perfect pace and serves the film's themes, the question of identity in particular, quite well.

For the most part, the 3DCG is very strong, especially during the Gundam fights. It helps that these sequences have some great directing that help give a visceral sense of scale and destruction and pure terror I hadn't felt since War in the Pocket.

They kept the Unicorn UI which is a good choice.

The general setting and background art, for the most part, is very strong and truly helps convey the different scenes' mood. I've never been to Davao but it really seems like they nailed it. That Jollibee product placement actually helps!

The sound design and soundtrack are all strong! I love the noises the Penelope and Ξ make. Sawano's soundtrack is quite good! I was afraid the insert song wouldn't work with Gundam and I'm happy to find that I was wrong!

The Bad (although not really):

If you haven't at least watched Char's Counter Attack, you'll be absolutely lost. The film gives you some context but I doubt newcomers will understand everything. It doesn't spoonfeed you exposition, which is great, but also could be detrimental for new watchers.

Most of the 3DCG and background art is really great. A few parts (although they are scarce) are slightly less good. Mostly vehicles. Not awful, but slightly less good.

Without going into spoiler territory, the final fight was rather short. It was intense but ended rather abruptly and some will find it anticlimactic. I actually think it makes sense considering who Hathaway is, but I also understand that one might feel frustrated.

The Ugly:

Nothing! I am eagerly waiting for the rest of the trilogy!

Is it an ideal entry point into Gundam? Maybe not. But it's one of the best entries in the franchise and I had a wonderful time watching and rewatching it. It's now available on Netflix, so please give it a watch if you can!
