went digging through some of my old documents and stumbled upon a little worldbuilding doc for a BTS omegaverse fic that will probably never see the light of day. but i absolutely adore omegaverse fics since it was the first time i ever encountered the idea that a person's sex doesn't determine their gender, and having an entire AU that didn't bat an eye at a woman with a penis or a man with a vagina was super cathartic to read while i was figuring out my own complicated presentation

i'd really like to repurpose this worldbuilding doc for a future series at some point. reading it over, it's not bad but does require some retooling to balance out the world (i'm bad at statistics and now think the theta population should be much higher compared to the other presentations) and also rework gammas (i no longer like the original wording; kinda sounds like one can evolve out of being intersex)

despite these issues (and so many more) i'mma post the old worldbuilding so i can hopefully get feedback from others and also have a public record of how the concepts have evolved

Primary and Secondary Sexes

Primary sexes are evident from birth and determine whether a pup will physically present with masculine or feminine characteristics. There are three primary sexes - male, female, and gamma.

Secondary sexes do not develop - or present - until puberty. This sex determines an individual's role in the social hierarchy as well as influences their physical capabilities. There are five secondary sexes - alpha, delta, beta, omega, and theta.

Γγ Gamma – The Third Primary Sex

Description: The gamma is a primary sex which will eventually mature into a female delta or a male beta. Pre-presentation, it is unknown which secondary sex the child will mature into. Thus, gammas are referred to with non-gendered pronouns until presentation.

Biology: A gamma is born with a vaginal opening, an engorged clitoris, and undescended testicles. They present later in life compared to the other primary sexes, usually between the ages of 18 to 22. If a gamma presents as a delta, they will develop breasts and other female characteristics. A gamma that presents as a beta will have their clitoris grow into a functioning penis and develop other male characteristics.

Statistics: 2% of the population will be born as gamma. 70% of gammas will present as delta, while the other 30% will present as beta.

Αα Alpha – The Leader

Description: Alphas stands at the top of the hierarchy. They are naturally charismatic and excel in leadership roles within their packs.

Characteristics: An alpha is usually taller, broader, and physically stronger than the other secondary sexes. They are aggressive by nature, especially in their younger years or in the presence of other alphas. They are competitive and do not hesitate to show dominance if the situation calls for it. They are able to dominate each of the other secondary sexes and force them submit through the alpha's scent.

Biology: Like all secondary sexes, the alpha possesses scent glands at the base of their neck and wrists. The unique scents they produce are heady and more piquant than those of other secondary sexes. Through their scent, alphas can influence a room full of those lower in the hierarchy, showing their intent or mood regarding the situation. Depending on the will of the alpha, most individuals can resist this unspoken influence.

However, if an alpha makes a true command - a combination of pheromones, will, and spoken word - both omegas and thetas are forced to abide by the command. Deltas and betas may or may not be able to resist a command depending on their will. An alpha is immune to the influence and command of another alpha. It is considered bad taste to needlessly use a true command and doing so to inflict harm on another can lead to severe legal repercussions.

An alpha's penis possess what is known as a bulbus glandis, colloquially referred to as a knot. A knot can inflate during sexual intercourse and lock into the vaginal walls of an omega in order to trap the sperm released after climax to maximize the chance of impregnation.

Both male and female alphas can impregnate an omega or female theta. Neither primary sex of alphas can carry a viable pregnancy.

An alpha is known to go into a rut once a year, which can last from 3 to 10 days. During this period, an alpha's pheromones are more potent, and they display a more possessive behavior. However, some alphas can experience an over-rut caused by prolonged use of suppressants, which can lead to an extended rut period with more exaggerated behavior. But no matter whether an alpha is experiencing a rut or over-rut, they remain coherent and fully aware of any decisions made during this period.

Statistics: 25% of the population will present as alpha - male alphas make up 23% of the population, whereas female alphas are only 2%.

Δδ Delta – The Enforcer

Description: Deltas are commonly considered to be lesser alphas. They mirror the biology and demeanor of alphas and can often be mistaken for an alpha.

Characteristics: Physically, deltas perfectly mirror alphas. However, behavioral studies have shown deltas to be more cooperative and willing to follow orders. Essentially, they are a less stubborn, less aggressive version of an alpha. This is intentional, as they are the direct result of gene tampering within alphas.

Biology: The biology of a delta is nearly identical to that of an alpha. The only difference is they are unable to form a true command.

Statistics: 20% of the population will present as delta - male deltas make up 16% of the population, whereas female deltas are only 4%.

Ββ Beta – The Peacekeeper

Description: Beta is the rarest secondary sex an individual can present as. They possess a peaceful, calming scent that can be deceptively powerful.

Characteristics: Betas can vary in strength and height, with the females often being much larger than the males. The strength of the beta comes not from their physical prowess, but from their ability to sooth and undermine the influence of the other secondary sexes. Betas are often self-serving an manipulative, preferring to set the stage and encouraging others to unknowingly do their bidding.

However, a beta that has been properly integrated in a pack can become fiercely loyal to their found family. They then use their influence to provide an easier life for their pack, and help to regulate the emotional state of the other members.

A beta can be a pack's strongest weapon or its greatest weakness.

Biology: The scent of a beta is very mild and delicate, though powerful enough to calm even a feral alpha. Betas also have the unique ability to diffuse the scent of other secondary sexes, weakening an alpha or omega's influence. This ability is very useful, which makes betas a prized addition to any pack.

Betas are the only secondary sex that is completely infertile, being unable to carry a viable pregnancy or impregnate omegas or female thetas. Their population is carefully monitored by the government, maintained by selective breeding of omegas that carry the recessive gene. The infertility of betas is entirely intentional, as it is the direct result of gene tampering.

Betas can be female from birth, but all male betas are born as gammas. This means they possess undescended testicles, which renders them unable to produce viable sperm.

Statistics: 2% of the population will present as beta - female betas make up 1.4% of the population, whereas male betas are only 0.6%.

Ωω Omega – The Caretaker

Description: Omegas are known to be submissive and caring in nature. They like to nurture and take care of others.

Characteristics: An omega is physically weaker than the rest of the secondary sexes, however they are known for their agility and speed. They are softer in appearance, having a smoother complexion and generally appear to be quite feminine no matter their primary sex. Omegas submit easily to the influence of alphas, deltas, and betas; though they are far from defenseless.

Biology: The scent of an omega is usually fragrant, sweet, and very appealing to the other secondary sexes. Their unique scent can trigger the protective instincts of others and neutralize most threats to their physical well-being. During an over-heat, omegas become powerful enough to subdue even the strongest alpha.

Omegas are the only secondary sex that can carry a pregnancy to term, and can be impregnated by any secondary sex other than betas. Both male and female omegas can be impregnated, and are extremely fertile when in heat, which is equivalent to an alpha's rut.

Up to a week before their heat, omegas will experience pre-heat where their scent becomes more potent and the omega will prepare a space where they feel safe and guarded, known as a nest. The nest is filled with articles of clothing or other objects which carry the scents of their loved ones.

Omega males produce viable sperm and can technically impregnate another omega or female theta. However, their penises are often too small for penetration, with the average size ranging between one or two inches in length.

Statistics: 23% of the population will present as omega - female omegas make up 21% of the population, whereas males are only 2%.

Θθ Theta – The Worker

Description: Thetas are the most common secondary sex an individual can present as. They have no power of influence and pad the majority of the workforce.

Characteristics: Thetas have the greatest diversity when it comes to body types. They are at the bottom of the hierarchy due to their weak scents and inability to protect themselves from the influence of any other secondary sex.

However, thetas are far from useless. They are peaceful in nature and have a wide range of skills. They usually choose to specialize in a certain trade and contribute heavily to society. Thetas are very cooperative, willing to share their knowledge and resources in order to strengthen their individual packs and larger communities.

Biology: Like all other secondary sexes, thetas possess scent glands. Their scents are nearly anosmic with only a faint hint of a personal fragrance. A theta's weak scent is what lends them no power of influence over the higher secondary sexes. This is entirely intentional, as it is the direct result of gene tampering.

Only male thetas can impregnate an omega or female theta. Female thetas can carry a viable pregnancy, but the resulting pup will always present as theta.

Statistics: 30% of the population will present as theta - female thetas make up 16% of the population, whereas males are only 14%.

Further Worldbuilding

Modern day humans and wolves share a distant common ancestor. This ancestor was huge compared to modern wolves, and had the ability shift between human and wolf form. Over time, both humans and wolves lost their ability to shift, although some alphas still carry the dormant gene for it.

Early on there were only two secondary sexes – alpha and omega. The possibility for pregnancy was once based on the primary sex of an individual, so alpha and omega females were able to carry a viable pregnancy. Around the same time that the secondary sex began to play a larger role in fertility, a third sex emerged – the beta.

Betas quickly grew in number and began to use their influence to oppress alphas and omegas. While they're physically weaker than alphas, betas were quite dangerous in their ability to diffuse an alphas influence, as well as keep them calm and complacent while the betas took charge.

Eventually, alphas became aware of the tactics being used against them and took action. They began to systematically slaughter the betas, using the few survivors for experimentation and gene tampering. Betas were altered to be infertile and less powerful. Alphas began further experimentation, leading to the creation of gammas, deltas, and thetas.

This dark period in history was slowly brought to an end as a shift in the political climate caused the general public to view the new secondary sexes in a more positive light. The government quickly shut down their facilities before the public could be made aware of the true conditions surrounding these new genetic developments.

Pack Dynamics

even tho i'll probably never write the fic i designed the worldbuilding for, i still wanted to share my plans for the presentations and general characters of each BTS member~

Reader Character – A gamma who has relied on suppressors to delay their presentation. They only want to live a quiet life alone, tending to their coffee shop without taking a mate or belonging to a pack. They're terrified of presenting as a delta, not wanting to develop female characteristics, and are wary of presenting as beta because then they will certainly be claimed by a pack. They struggle to make ends meet, having to choose between paying for rent or their suppressants one too many times. They begin to present as beta, and are almost immediately coerced by a lone alpha to join his new pack.

Namjoon – An alpha who is the illegitimate pup of a CEO in the music industry. He is desperate to gain his father’s recognition and respect. Namjoon has been enamored with the underground idol scene for years, and finally decides to start his own pack once he learns that his father often sends out recruiting agents to the end-of-year competitions. He already has a few individuals picked out for the future members of his pack – but first he needs to convince them to join. He needs a member who is impressive enough to poach quality members from smaller packs and can reassure an omega of their safety. Namjoon needs a beta. And what do you know, the gamma that runs his favorite coffee shop just presented.

Seokjin – A delta who belongs to a rich, shady beta. He knows that the beta’s line of work is not exactly legal, but Seokjin’s not too concerned about it affecting his safety. He is a longtime friend of Namjoon, and has agreed to be the angel benefactor for the new pack on the condition no one ever learns where the money is coming from. He has to hide this from his beta, as the money given to Seokjin is only to be used on himself, and he knows that joining a pack will upset his territorial beta. He’s confident in his ability to balance it all, to have his cake and eat it too. He only needs to keep the act up until he can leave the beta for good, and finally be someone the rest of his pack can depend on.

Yoongi – An alpha who wants to be heard, but never seen. He’s always loved creating music and wanted to be a part of the industry. However he is small and unassertive, often labeled as a disgrace to other alphas. Yoongi has tried to sell his music or sign with a company, but always ends up getting ripped off. He became friends with Namjoon and agreed to leave his own pack on two conditions: 1) Namjoon finds a beta to help manage his anxiety, and 2) Yoongi never has to step foot into the spotlight. Surprisingly, Namjoon has been able to uphold the first condition, but Yoongi worries that he won’t be so lucky with the second one.

Hoseok – A theta dance instructor who has always dreamed of becoming a professional dancer, a star just like his idols. However, Hoseok’s rank in the hierarchy holds him back from ever being able to step into the limelight. He has started to lose faith in his dreams of stardom, and is considering going back to school to get a more credible job. When Namjoon offers him a place in the pack, Hoseok is ready to jump at the chance. There’s only one problem: he won’t join without his omega roommate. And his roommate hates alphas.

Jimin – A little omega with a lot to prove. He has no interest in becoming a mother and is high key terrified of ever becoming pregnant. Jimin always dreamed of being able to perform in front of a crowd, and even took dance lessons when he was a pup. On his sixteenth birthday, Jimin’s parents arranged his marriage to an older alpha, effectively killing his dreams. Jimin held out for years in the marriage, tricking his mate into believing he was pregnant several times before ultimately ‘losing’ the pups. When his alpha mate discovered the lies, Jimin fled and began to live on the streets. It was there that he met Hoseok and the two of them soon bonded over their love of dance. They moved in together, and Jimin likes Hoseok well enough, but he thinks the theta must be crazy for wanting to join a pack with so many alphas and deltas.

Taehyung – A delta with a love of art and fashion. His family always expected him to work a dignified job and put him through college to ensure his success. However, Taehyung soon grew bored with spending his nights at the library and began to instead attend the underground idol competitions. Taehyung’s grades dropped, and he got a job at a high-end retail store once he got kicked out of college. He uses his job to easily steal and recreate luxury products to make costumes for other idols. Taehyung has never been a part of a pack before, hating the idea of being owned and controlled, but he does dream of getting to one day wear his own creations on stage.

Jungkook – An alpha with a bright future as a professional singer. He was born into a rich family with plenty of industry connections, and his parents have fostered his natural talent from a young age. Jungkook had been scouting out agencies when he first met Namjoon, who was being dragged out by his father’s security. Jungkook never got to properly introduce himself to the older alpha, and always hoped they would meet again. One night, he sneaks out after curfew with the other trainees to check out the underground idol scene. It’s there that he spots Namjoon, performing onstage with his incomplete pack. Jungkook begs to join the pack, and Namjoon quickly agrees once he realizes Jungkook as his father's only legitimate pup.
