not gossip-related, but i came across some posts on black english players racial abuse & wanted to share smthg that shows european racism.
this is in no means me trying to compare ENG & GER, i´m just going to summarize what happened. warning: it´s long.
there is a WDR (west german radio station) "survey" that shows, how every fifth german wants more white players to play for the DFB. 21% want more national players with a white skin tone and 17% are disappointed about the fact that ilkay gündogan has turkish roots. >lmao, shouldn´t be suprising after the mistreatment of özil, no matter if his political ties align with you personally or not, german fans are wrong & ungrateful for booing whenever he possessed the ball and straight up were racist to him. he was one of the key players that helped germany win the world cup in 2014. kimmich says that it is absolute bonkers. football is a way of uniting different nations, ppl of different skin tones and religions. it is racist and has no business in their team. the actual reason for this poll resulted in reporter Phillip Awounou´s documentary named (literal transl.) "Unity and Right and Diversity". in the interviews, he was confronted with statements on how little "actual" light-skin germans are playing. they wanted to share this reaction w actual data instead of "simplifying" it.
in the end, despite the disappointing results, this has just shown the social state of today´s germany. 20ish% is enough to see the online abuse under the most random sports posts. i could write pages on özil, gündogan and mixed players like gnarby and co. who contribute(d) to the dfb and still seem to have to prove their loyalty to germany.
it sucks that you have to perform well to "earn" not only the respect - but also human decency from "fans". like özil said, you are german when you win but an outsider if you lose. this can be applied on the english players. the brits reaction to the final was disgusting but not surprising.
(anon is this the ask you meant?)
yeah i also read about that survery and the results are crazy
unfortunately this trend of being accepted as their own when you win and being racially abused when you lose is a reality in a lot of european countries.
i remember this quote from romelu lukaku, similar to özil's quote:
"When I played well, I was Romelu Lukaku, the Belgian striker. When things were going less, it became Romelu Lukaku, the Belgian striker of Congolese origin. I am a Belgian. Full stop."

My last (hopefully) statement to this
I already stated what had been said by Thomas Müller and Manuel Neuer but I feel like many people aren't seeing it or ignoring it. So I will say it once more and hopefully leave this situation behind.
As you might know these interviews of Neuer and Müller have made people go mad especially on social media.
I do NOT support any racism, I myself am a child of an immigrant and had to suffer at a school that had many racist teachers and students which made me understand Özils Statement and I DO support his decision of leaving the team if he feels not treated right!!!!
So now to the main part of this Post.
There was indeed a misunderstanding and wrong translation of the interviews, both of them are AGAINST racism and both of them stated that between the TEAMMATES there was no racism (which was also stated by Özil considering he only said that GRINDEL and people on social media were racist towards him). Then Müller stated that Racism is not (or better said in english SHOULD NOT) be a discussion worthy subject in this Team and this sports, meaning it shouldn't be happening so that we wouldn't have to talk about it!!!!
Neuer totally understood Özils decision on leaving the team because Özil didn't feel well playing for them anymore and AFTER the Özil topic he talked about the national team needing more players who are passionate about this country, who would fight with all they have, their heart and soul and people who are proud to be playing for this team, not people who are just here because they have to be. This is what EVERY national team wants. Meaning he DIDN'T say that people who aren't "fully german" are the reason why they suck, he just said that they needed to be more passionate again, like they were in 2014, he meant the whole team, the whole country.
I do see that there could be a misunderstanding in these statements but this topic is always a big red warning sign for anybody, especially people with a big community/fanbase which is the same situation that started all of this mess (Özils picture with Erdogan) which is why they didnt really want to talk about it anymore. NOT because it should just be forgotten!!! We germans do know what happend in our past and we ARE TOTALLY against racism and we DO know that there are still people in our country who didn't learn from our past, but if we keep talking about this people will always remember us as nazis and we DON'T want that just because some people in this country, just like in every other country, are still stupid.
And also, side note, insulting these players isn't very clever considering this whole situation started off by insults against someone (and of course racism).
And since I saw some people insulting them or saying they won't support them or their teams anymore etc. I respect your decision by deciding not to support them or their teams anymore because of those misunderstandings, I won't force you to like something, BUT there have been other people at higher positions in these teams stating REAL dumb things and being the reason all of this is a thing, at the end of the day YOU decide on what YOU support, but only saying that you wont support these teams anymore just because you THINK two players said some nasty stuff is NOT clever considering there have been many other occasions of certain people in higher positions that said stuff like that straight forward.
Also, the german media wants to push this situation to the limit right now because they dont have anything else to talk about and need something. Yes of course this was UNACCEPTABLE and Grindel shouldn't be at this high position anymore, but if we keep talking about the same one situation it wont make things any better, an apology is needed by GRINDEL or any other person that insulted him or were racist towards him because they could have just said nicely why they thought this picture wasnt a great idea and NOT by the players that never had any problem with him or any other player because of their race or religion just because media wants to put a bad image on some players!
Hope some of you guys read this and maybe read the interviews afterwards too because some people only read the misleading headlines!
So do I think they are privileged white boys thinking they can talk about how not racist all of this is? No. They are privileged white boys that got tricked by the media and people on the internet pushing the situation even more. Also their job isn't publicly speaking the way everybody understands what they really mean, their job is kicking a ball from one side to the other, of course they cannot always find the right words to express themselves correctly!
Hope you guys have a great week and I hope we can finally leave this topic behind and fight against racism the way some people suddenly fight against these 2.

Mesut Özil is retiring from international football bc of racism and ill treatment- when will people realise that it’s time to respect others regardless of their race, skin colour, religion and/or ethnicity? I’m absolutely disgusted and devastated, he may have not had much play time this World Cup, but Mesut Özil is a player with so much potential and these sick minded people have just taken that away from him.

Hey are you a Muslim????
No. Actually I don’t consider myself religious. But I do try to learn, listen and respect. About that Özil post I had queued (which is probably why you asked), I have a massive respect for him and how he stands up for his religion and culture

The Uighurs And The Law
By Isher Gill, The George Washington University Class of 2020
September 2, 2020
Tumblr media
In all honesty, I did not even know who the Uighur’s were, let alone how to pronounce “Uighur” until a soccer player, Mesut Özil, spoke about their plight in China. For those like me that do not know about the Uighurs, here are three quick facts to familiarize yourself with the group: (1) Uighur is pronounced “wee-gr,” (2) the Uighur’s are Muslim ethnic group of around 12 million living primarily in the Xinjiang province of China, and (3) the group is the subject of egregious human rights violations at the hands of the Chinese government.[1]
The Accusations
The Chinese government has been accused of detaining at least one million Uighur’s in “re-education camps.” A report by the Human Rights Watch describes two types of “re-education” camps.[2] The first camp is, allegedly, dedicated to the torture of Uighurs where prisoners are beat, and the forced to renounce Islam through practices that involve consumption of pork, and alcohol. These orders come from President Xi Jinping who believes that “religions in China must be Chinese in orientation.” Additionally, to limit the growth of the Uighur population, women Uighurs have been fit with contraceptive devices.[3]
The second leg of the camps consist of having prisoners learn Mandarin, and sing songs about the glory of the Communist party. A third part of Xi’s plan to eradicate the Uighur’s involves encouraging the Han Chinese to move to the Xinjiang region, and displace the Uighur population.
The Defense
The Chinese government defends these actions by claiming the measures taken against the Uighurs are counterterrorism operations done in the interest of national security. In fact, Chinese law even allows for the detention centers previously outlined.
Two sets of legislation have been particularly useful in the persecution of the Uighurs: (1) theCounter-Terrorism Law of the People’s Republic of China, effective January 2016, and (2) the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region De-Extremism Regulations, effective April 2017.
The Counter-Terrorism Law is an incredibly broad piece of legislation. The composition of the Counter-Terrorism Law has allowed for arbitrary interpretation by Chinese authorities. An example of this is Article 7 of the Counter-Terrorism Law.Article 7 describes “extremism [a]s the ideological foundation of terrorism, preventing and punishing extremist activities is an important strategy for countering the roots of terrorism.” Using Article 7, the Chinese government has been able to justify the detention of the Muslim Uighurs based on their religion. The Article has also given the Chinese the legal authority to imprison human rights defenders, political opponents, and other ethnic minorities. Moreover, Articles 29 and 30 of the Counter-Terrorism Law give authorities the right to send Uighurs to re-education facilities if they are deemed to be a danger to society, yet there is no definition of what constitutes a “danger to society.” To top it off, the Counter-Terrorism Law does not allow for judicial review of these decisions.[4]
The Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region De-Extremism Regulations further extends China’s legal right to target the Uighurs. Under the Implementing Measures are 75 indicators of religious extremism. Included in these indicators are “possessing certain halal products, having a long beard, wearing a full-face headscarf, selecting children’s names with ‘Islamic connotations,’ refusing to consume state television or radio, or refusing to break Islamic dietary restriction.”[5] Those who exhibit any of these indicators can legally be sent to the re-education camps.
These two laws are part of a massive effort by the Chinese government to police its people, and eradicate undesirable parts of the population. Other relevant legislation includes China’s Counter Espionage Law, National Security Law, Law on the Management of Overseas NGOs’ Activities in Mainland China, and the Cybersecurity Law.[6]This family of legislation, forms the legal basis for China’s “Strike Hard Against Violent Extremism” campaign.
International Law and Human Rights
In a report directed to President Xi Jinping, the United Nations (UN) outlined violations of international law by the Chinese government.[7] The UN took issue with the broadness of the Counter-Terrorism Law, and described how the law is contrary to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights’ (UDHR) Principal of Legal Certainty, which calls for criminal laws to be specific and precise. Additionally, in 2018, the Convention on Eliminating Racial All Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD) found “that the broad definition of terrorism, the vague references to extremism and the unclear definition of separatism in Chinese laws could potentially lead to the criminalization of peaceful civic and religious expression and facilitate the criminal profiling of ethnic and ethno-religious minorities, including Muslim Uighurs.”[8]
The United Nations further illustrated that, if allegations of China’s treatment of the Uighurs is true, the country will be in violation of at least: Articles 2, 3, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 18, 19 and 20 of the UDHR[9]; Articles 2 and 5 of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD)[10]; Articles 2, 13, 14, 16 of the Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CAT)[11]; and Articles 2, 12, and 13 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (ICESCR)[12].
The Future:
Progress towards action against China has been made in the United States. On June 17, 2020 the Uyghur Human Rights Policy Act of 2020 was signed into law.[13] The act seeks “to condemn gross human rights violations of ethnic Turkic Muslims in Xinjiang, and calling for an end to arbitrary detention, torture, and harassment of these communities inside and outside China.” The bill instructs the Director of National Intelligence and President Trump to compile a report on the Uighur situation in China. If evidence of human rights violations is found, China may be subject to sanctions by the United States.
At the moment, however, the United States is the only country to initiate potential sanctions on China. While countries around the world have condemned China for its treatment of the Uighurs, none have done anything to stop China. Intergovernmental organizations have also neglected to impose penalties upon China. The United Nations, for example, outlined China’s violations of international law, yet have not taken any action against Xi Jinping and his government.
Until countries begin reprimanding China with tangible penalties, and sanctions the future of the Uighur population looks bleak.

Mesut Özil would be nice too, but my chance to meet him is much higher. So it is Jackie Chan. Well, the more I think about it... Someone from Disney would be great too.
8. Do you know how to Cook? What's your best dish?

The Ugly Face of China:
Arsenal Distance Themselves From Midfielder Mesut Özil Comments on Uighurs’ Plight
English soccer club Arsenal tried on Saturday to distance itself from the comments of its star midfielder Mesut Ozil after he posted messages on Twitter and Instagram critical of China's policies toward its Muslim Uighur minority.
• Midfielder highlighted persecution of Muslims in China
• Club says it ‘does not involve itself in politics’ in statement
Nick Ames, Friday 13, 2019
Tumblr media

Arsenal have distanced themselves from comments made by Mesut Özil on Instagram, in which he spoke out strongly against China’s persecution of the Uighur population in the north-western region of Xinjiang and criticised Muslims for not doing more to highlight the issue.
The club sought to limit any damage caused to its business in China, where it has numerous commercial interests including a chain of restaurants, by releasing a statement on Weibo – a leading Chinese social media site – as well as other platforms stressing it is apolitical and does not associate itself with Özil’s views.
“Regarding the comments made by Mesut Özil on social media, Arsenal must make a clear statement,” it read. “The content published is Özil’s personal opinion. As a football club, Arsenal has always adhered to the principle of not involving itself in politics.”
Tumblr media
Well Done Mesut Özil! May Almighty Allah Bless you!
Özil had added his voice to the wave of international outrage about the treatment of the Uighurs, a Turkic-speaking Muslim minority who have been subjected to a campaign of religious and ethnic persecution by the Chinese authorities.
Around 10 million live in Xinjiang and there are claims that more than a million have been held in detention camps over recent years. Özil’s post had listed a range of the issues facing Uighurs in China, accusing other Muslims of staying silent on the subject.
His Instagram message read: “East Turkistan, the bleeding wound of the Ummah, resisting against the persecutors trying to separate them from their religion. They burn their Qurans. They shut down their mosques. They ban their schools. They kill their holy men. The men are forced into camps and their families are forced to live with Chinese men. The women are forced to marry Chinese men.
“But Muslims are silent. They won’t make a noise. They have abandoned them. Don’t they know that giving consent for persecution is persecution itself?”

Uyghur human rights advocate Dilnur Reyhan laments lack of Muslim solidarity

New Post has been published on http://khalilhumam.com/uyghur-human-rights-advocate-dilnur-reyhan-laments-lack-of-muslim-solidarity/
Uyghur human rights advocate Dilnur Reyhan laments lack of Muslim solidarity

The 11 million Uyghurs living in the western province of Xinjiang in China are a Muslim Turkic nation that has been targeted by Beijing and deprived of their most basic human rights, including freedom of religion, of movement, and also of transmitting their native language since Xi Jinping took power in China in 2012. While extensively documented, the situation of the Uyghurs has gained very limited support, including in predominantly Muslim countries. To understand why, I talked to Dilnur Reyhan, an Uyghur scholar who lives in France and teaches at Paris National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilizations (INALCO). She is also the founder and president of the European Uyghur Institute, an NGO promoting Uyghur issues and culture. Reyhan is an outspoken community leader who advocates the defense of human rights and women's rights. The interview has been edited for brevity. Filip Noubel Despite the massive human rights abuses taking places in Xinjiang, there is little, or no show of solidarity from governments in Muslim countries. You first raised that issue in 2019 during the Ramadan by challenging Muslims to react. Have things changed since?
Dilnur Reyhan I published this column in a French newspaper during last Ramadan with a feeling of desperation and disappointment, because until the end of 2019, almost no government of Muslim countries had shown the slightest sign of solidarity with the Uyghurs. What was all the more disappointing was the total indifference of the population of Muslim countries, except in Turkey. Hatred against the West among Muslim populations has blinded ordinary Muslim citizens of different countries to the point of refusing to believe any news brought by the Western media, even when it covers concentration camps for Muslims. On the one hand, China takes advantage of our Muslim identity to justify its camps, on the other hand, the majority of Muslims refuse to believe in it and thus support Chinese policy. Not much has changed, except in the case of Qatar, because most Muslim countries rely on China economically speaking, and to benefit from transfers of Chinese technology. Besides most of those countries do not have great human rights records, and rarely protect the rights of their own minorities. Finally, China is often seen as a positive counterweight to the West. But we have seen the case of individuals, such as the Turkish-German football player Mesut Özil raising the issue publicly. This could mean that opinion leaders could make public opinion be more aware.
FN What about the attitude of the governments of Western countries? Do you see them evolving on the issue of human rights violations in Xinjiang?
DR The attitude of Western countries is a little better than that of Muslim countries. At least 22 Western countries have asked China to close its concentration camps, while 50 countries, half of which are Muslim, have expressed collective support to China. Due to the current Sino-US trade war, Washington is showing a fairly firm attitude against Chinese policies targeting Uyghurs, in particular through sanctions against Chinese companies and officials responsible for these camps, but also through the bill for the protection of the human rights of Uyghurs. In Australia, we see similar signs of policy change emerging.
Sign of Taiwanese solidarity with the Uyghurs during a JUne 4th (Tiananmen massacre commemoration) in Taipei. Photo by Filip Noubel, used with permission.
< p dir="ltr">FN Are you able to establish alliances with members and activists in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan?
DR The Uyghurs of the diaspora stand in solidarity with the democracy movements of Hong Kong and Taiwan. The Hong Kong people did not forget to connect their movement to the issue of the Uyghurs during their demonstrations in 2019 .last year. One of the representatives of the Hong Kong democracy movement, Denise Ho, who is also a pop star in Asia, even supported the European Uyghur Institute by making a video to call the public to support our organization. In Taiwan, Tiananmen student movement leader and exile Uyghur Örkesh [known as Wuerkaixi in Chinese], links the Uyghur diaspora with the democratic movements in Taiwan.
FN Uyghur culture and identity have come under serious threat in Xinjiang. What are the tools of resistance Uyghur people can still use in this situation?
DR  Since the establishment of this extended network of concentration camps by China in the Uyghur Region [Xinjiang] , the tasks of the Uyghur diaspora has increased significantly increased. On the one hand, political organizations are working to pressure Western countries to adopt measures  that would force China to close the camps. On the other hand, the protection and safeguarding of the Uyghur language and culture in the diaspora has become vital. Thus, almost everywhere in the diaspora, mother tongue schools have been created for the past three years.
Our organization is a good example: we started our activities as a student association to promote the Uyghur language and culture in France in 2009. Ten years later, the context in the Uighur region but also in the diaspora has changed to the point that we now broaden our activities for the safeguard of the Uyghur identity in the Europe, where about 10,000 Uyghurs are believed to live.

Rassismus ist real. #metwo
Dear readers, we have to talk. This time it’s not about me though, I’d like to talk about our society. About a society I am increasingly worried about.
Mesut Özil’s resignation from the German national football team, purportedly due to racism, has sparked a debate which in my opinion was long overdue. Mesut Özil, a German citizen, born in Gelsenkirchen, found himself confronted with racism. I think we don’t need to establish that comments like “Turkish pig” and “goat-fucker” (the latter term was actually hurled at Özil by an SPD politician) are plain racist. In other words, whoever claims that Özil is just too thin-skinned has clearly not looked into the matter deeply enough.   Bild, the big German boulevard newspaper, has joined the ranks of agitators against the athlete. First the paper attempted to undermine his “German-ness” with the headline “He goes on a pilgrimage to Mecca and loves a Miss Turkey!”, and eventually expatriated him altogether after the World Cup. This quote from a Bild article serves as a case in point: “…good that you took off the jersey with the German eagle, we no longer go together.”   Both (SPD politician) Holzhauer and (Bild chef) Reichelt faced substantial criticism of their comments, but that did not really change much. The sad truth remains: Germany is racist..   As soon as Özil was stripped from his protective coat of being a successful athlete, even he, a highly awarded national player who won the World Cup with Germany, who was born and raised here and has paid millions of Euros in taxes is ostracized and suddenly fair game.   Please don’t misunderstand me: personally, I also think it was a mistake that Özil posed for a picture with Erdogan and never distanced himself from Turkish politics. After all, the athlete is a role model for scores of youngsters, and for that reason alone clear words would have been called for in my opinion. But no mistake justifies discrimination on racist grounds. NONE.   Racism, in all its many more or less obvious forms, is part of our social reality – to the point that even one of our country’s most successful athletes is not exempt from it.
“…so why don’t people accept that I’m German?” Mesut Özil
It is shocking how racism still – or once again – forms part of the daily reality of many people. It has become the norm again. “It’s just the way it is.”   Many accept the subliminal mobbing, the little stabs at work, or even laugh along at inappropriate jokes. We all have a desire to belong, after all, to fit in, not to stick out. It wasn’t so bad, was it? Well, and then suddenly Özil quit the team. The focus fell on a grand stage when the racism festering in the German national team, the nation’s pride and also its sore spot, became visible. WE were world champions, after all.   But Özil’s quitting the team caused more than a public outcry – it started a veritable protest movement. People everywhere started sharing their own experiences with racism using the hashtag #metwo. And all of us should really, really listen. Racism is indeed a virus that has infected our society – and it is spreading.   Let us look at the facts: Die Zeit (a renowned, traditionally liberal weekly newspaper) is openly asking the question whether it would be better to let refugee boats sink in the mediterranean. The openly racist AfD party holds at 12% (a current poll showed as much as 16% for the party – i.e. the support is still growing). Horst Seehofer celebrates 69 deportations on his 69th birthday, and, well, Mesut Özil faces open racism. Is anyone really going to tell me racism is not a big problem in Germany today?   The simple truth is that it is – and if you read through some tweets with the hashtag #metwo there cannot be much doubt. The stories I read affect me. What’s worst for me is to realise at how young an age many people are confronted with racism in their lives.   For many children it starts in school, where they often find themselves helpless targets of racist comments. I would go as far as accusing some teachers of emotional abuse. How incompetent some of the supposed educators in charge can be is beyond me. It is bad enough that children are often so brutal among each other – but how must it feel as a kid when the teacher chips in as well? How are you going to build trust in society when you’re excluded from the earliest developmental stages onwards?   The following tweets are just a few examples of a widely shared experience:
“My German teacher made fun of my for my incorrect usage of German articles and my pronunciation of the letter “r”. I am fluent in 5 languages, and he has not managed to pronounce my four letter name correctly one single time.” @seratonin   “When we were talking about job applications in school, and I told my teacher that I want to study, he told me ‘you’ll be long married by the time'” @navasgeht   “Here in Germany we use our real names and not pseudonyms! Maybe you didn’t know that.” “That’s my real name.” – I was talking to the dean of a uni in Leipzig. @WhoIsYade
“Child in the daycare facility tells my daughter tells her she knows why my daughter has such brown skin. Her father had explained to her that particularly stupid babies are marked out by stewing them in a barrel of coals for a while.” @SoSumbu   I am preparing the seminar room. Student: “Are you almost done with cleaning? We’re about to start a class here.” @SelvetaB   “My brother was the best pupil in class, straight A’s. He gets a B on a test, compares his score with that of another pupil and discovers that he received a worse mark than the other pupil despite having a higher score. The teacher then tells him: ‘If I give you an A, what am I supposed to give the German pupils?” @Livenitup_DE
“My father works as capitain on a cargo ship. Court ruling in the eighties to deport us from Germany states the following reason: ‘the home of a sailor is the sea’ 8no kidding, I still have the document.” @HasnainKazim   “When neo-nazis threaten your mother and the state prosecutor tells her: ‘well, maybe your son should not be so outspoken in public.'” @ShahakShapira   “The emergency physician who refused to treat a family member before having them show him their passport despite acute respiratory distress syndrome.” @julyarabinowich
But not only schools, also the state and the judiciary system seem to fail many Germans instead of protecting them. Reading these comments (there are so many) I was overtaken by shame and anger. What really gets to me is the comment sections under those tweets. People share there experiences, but instead of simply listening, others feel personally offended, insult the posters and deny that there is any racism involved. Instead of offering support or at least an ounce of understanding, they add more humiliation and degradation to the pile. You really start asking yourself: What the hell is wrong with people?   I’d like to say at this point that I think it’s generally wrong to dispute someone’s personal perception of being marginalized. People in Germany that are not affected by racism have no right to define for others what is and what is not racism. Those unaffected are observers. And nope, “Almans” or “potatoes” is not an example for reverse racism here.   Those not affected are privileged to be able to say that aspects like their skin-color play no part in how they are perceived. For those targeted by racism, skin-color, religion and other superficial characteristics play an absolutely crucial part in how they are perceived in every-day life. They are rejected more often when applying for flats, are invited less often to job interviews, and are under much more general and constant pressure to justify themselves. A lot of discrimination happens subliminally, remains unquestioned between the lines.   There also seems to be widespread differentiation among Germans with immigration backgrounds: Asians are better Germans than Africans or Turks. And as far as Swedes and Americans are concerned, well those are not real immigrants after all. Even someone like me, who was not even born in Germany and grew up bi-lingually, but looks European and has a European name, has no problems. Meanwhile Merve, a third-generation German, born and raised in this country, faces discrimination on a daily basis.   It begs the question: What makes a German German? The skin-tone? The ancestry? The mentality? The place of birth? The nationality? The language?   Where does German-ness begin, and where does it end?   Divisions and arbitrary demarcation lines wherever we look. There is only one solution: we need to erase these lines.   It is not enough to wait and hope for the best. In order to break these invisible boundaries we have to step out of our roles as passive observers and become active. Just like our democracy should not be taken for granted, we also need to fight for a tolerant society. It requires courage, energy and spine, and challenges all of us to keep our eyes wide open, to not look away. The first step is to be reflective of ones own behaviors and patterns. The second is to stand up for someone else, to be active instead of passive.   We should all openly ask ourselves where and when we may have acted out some form of racism ourselves. Many people feel hurt and ostracized even when they are asked where they are from “originally”. If someone answers your question with “I’m from Hamburg”, accept it at face value. In a similar vein, not everyone will be open to talk about their experience of feeling excluded. We all need to develop our sensitivity, to look closely at our own behavior as well as that of our friends and families. This can be difficult, and certainly requires courage, but it is a step in the right direction. One of the central issues in this debate is that few people consider themselves racist – but many are without even being fully aware of it. Many do not consider their off-hand remarks to be racist, or withdraw to defending their own “opinions” (which, often enough are emotions rather than arguments).   To reflect for yourself whether such a pattern may apply to yourself, try asking yourself the following: how would I act and what would I say if skin-color, religion and name would not make any difference, if Murat sounded as German to me as Mark, if I’d register the differences in skin tone like I register the differences in eye color (no one is less German because their irises are brown), if I accepted Islam as a religion just as I accept Christianity? If I wipe out these dividing lines in my head – what am I left with? You’re suddenly confronting a human being. Not a label or a category.   I read some highly interesting thoughts HERE, and if you made it to this point in this text I recommend you take the time to check out the following article:   Now, after all that criticism, I also would like to acknowledge how long a way we have already come, how much more tolerant our generation is than the one before us was. It also helps to be aware how many of us are fighting for equal human rights. We are legion. While it often may not seem so in all the bullshit, a sense of courage, altruism and standing up for the other is found in many places and at many points in time. If we manage to bundle these energies, if we manage to work together towards a common goal, I see hope – for us Germans, Europeans, and for us as members of a global society.   Or, to say it with German band Die Ärzte:
“It’s not your fault that the world is as it is. But it’s your fault if it stays that way.”
A postscript: All my friends advised me against publishing this post. For understandable reasons. The main argument runs along the lines that I should not write about racism as someone who is not affected. They are right in that respect. But does it really help a society if its members always keep quiet for fear of rubbing someone up the wrong way? I am aware that some readers may disagree with me on the points outlined above, others may reject my perspective altogether. Maybe some readers will agree with many of my friends and believe I have no right to criticize an aspect of society I perceive only as observer. But I do believe, from the bottom of my heart, that this is a crucial issue, and feel a responsibility to express my opinion about it on this platform.
