The French actor and theatre manager Émile Taigny (1810-1875) with his wife, drawn by Paul Gavarni in 1840 (Paris Musées).
Mme. Taigny wears demi-gigot sleeves, the last hurrah of the 1830s.
After 1838 [women's] sleeves tended to be inserted low off the shoulder so that it became increasingly difficult to raise the arm above the horizontal; suggesting a ladylike incapacity of movement was becoming attractive.

Other than his masculine side part, M. Taigny sports a very similiar hairstyle to that of his wife, gathered into masses of curls at his temples. As an actor, he was certainly familiar with hair curling papers and cosmetics.
