From a visionary Mexican author, a hallucinatory, revelatory, colonial revenge story that reimagines the fall of Tenochtitlan. One morning in 1519, conquistador Hernán Cortés entered the city of Tenochtitlan – today's Mexico City. Later that day, he would meet the emperor Moctezuma in a collision of two worlds, two empires, two languages, two possible futures. Cortés was accompanied by his nine captains, his troops, and his two translators: Friar Aguilar, a taciturn, former slave, and Malinalli, a strategic, former princess. Greeted at a ceremonial welcome meal by the steely princess Atotoxli, sister and wife of Moctezuma, the Spanish nearly bungle their entrance to the city. As they await their meeting with Moctezuma – who is at a political, spiritual, and physical crossroads, and relies on hallucinogens to get himself through the day and in quest for any kind of answer from the gods – the Spanish are ensconced in the labyrinthine palace. Soon, one of Cortés’s captains, Jazmín Caldera, overwhelmed by the grandeur of the city, begins to question the ease with which they were welcomed into the city, and wonders at the risks of getting out alive, much less conquering the empire. Cortés is accompanied by his captains, his troops, his prized horses, and his two translators: Friar Aguilar, a taciturn friar, and Malinalli, an enslaved, strategic Nahua princess. After nearly bungling their entrance fo the city, the Spaniards are greeted at a ceremonial welcome meal by the steely Aztec princess Atotoxtli, sister and wife of Moctezuma. As they await their meeting with the emperor – who is at a political and spiritual crossroads, and relies on hallucinogens to get by – Cortés and his entourage are ensconced in the labyrinthine palace. Soon, one of Cortés’s captains, Jazmín Caldera, overwhelmed by the grandeur of the place, begins to question the ease with which they were welcomed into the city, and wonders at the chances of getting out alive, much less conquering the empire. Spoiler-Free Review: Gosh but this was an intriguing journey. It kind of reminds me of the kinds of daydreams a person can come up with when they��re REALLY focused on an idea. I don’t know if this is something other people do, but there are people (myself included) who can build out entire scenarios in their heads and just play them out from all angles, from the perspective of all the characters, with all the possible outcomes that occurs to the daydreamer. This book feels like a very refined version of that.

But with that being said: the dreamlike narrative is a result of the deliberately Borgesian thrust of the narrative. Because that’s what this is, at its core: a Borgesian take on a very specific historical event. There’s no certainties here, no hard, specific truths; it forces the reader to question the relationship between “fact” and “fiction” and address the fluidity and gray areas between the two. This story is a labyrinth, and the reader must navigate the labyrinth and meditate upon the story being told.

Another way to look at this story is that it’s a reclamation, of sorts, of the historical narrative. In the dream that is this novel history is turned on its head, wrested away from the “hard truths of reality” as created and put forward by the colonizers, and instead put in the hands of the colonized. This feels extremely powerful and empowering in a way that can’t be replicated in straight historical fiction, and likely not even by alternate history narratives.

Overall this was an utterly fascinating read. It might not be the easiest to get through, since not everyone is into Borgesian-style stories, but the payoff for those who DO enjoy that kind of style and for those who stick through it is DEFINITELY worth it. The experience will also be very interesting for anyone who’s from a country with a history of colonization, especially Spanish colonization, since the narrative brings up interesting questions about the interplay between fact and fiction, and how storytelling highlights thee fluidity between the two.

K-POP GIRL GROUP NMIXX JOINS BILLBOARD LATIN MUSIC WEEK FOR K-POP X LATIN MUSIC PANEL

Today, global music authority Billboard announced K-pop group sensation NMIXX will be joining the star-studded lineup for Billboard Latin Music Week, the longest-running and biggest Latin music industry gathering in the world. NMIXX will make history as the first K-pop group to participate in the event, and will be featured in an exclusive K-pop x Latin music panel. Celebrating its 35th anniversary, Billboard Latin Music Week returns with an unprecedented lineup of 60+ Latin stars spanning all genres. The five-day event will take place at The Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater from Oct. 14 - 18, 2024. K-pop girl group NMIXX will be featured in the K-pop Goes Latin with NMIXX panel, Billboard’s first-ever K-pop x Latin music conversation on Wednesday, October 16 to talk about how K-pop has exploded in the Latin market, and its future en español.

CASA-ESTUDIO ES PUJOL DE S’ERA

Marià Castelló estudió la carrera de arquitectura en Barcelona. Esta ciudad fue el impulso para superar la carrera, enriquecerse y formarse como arquitecto en todas sus facetas.

Marià Castelló es el primer arquitecto formenterense, y ha tenido mucha repercusión en la isla los últimos diez años gracias a sus innovadores proyectos en la isla. Su estudio comenzó a funcionar en 2002 con proyectos públicos y privados en Formentera. Este arquitecto se ha ganado el respeto gracias a la vinculación, el respeto y el compromiso con la cultura, el paisaje y el territorio de la menor de las islas Baleares.

Mariá reconoce su gran admiración por los arquitectos portugueses como Souto de Moura, Álvaro Siza, o los hermanos Aires Mateus. El arquitecto considera que la arquitectura debe manifestar el momento en el que se vive, y su estudio es prueba de ello. 

La casa tiene una superficie interior de 144 m2 y ocupa una superficie de terreno de 201 m2. Está orientada norte-sur. Está formada por una sola planta y se apoya sobre el terreno casi sin tocarlo, pareciendo que flota sobre él. 

Este proyecto arquitectónico busca refugio entre la vegetación existente y un fragmento de muro de piedra seca. Estas dos condiciones marcan las dimensiones, la orientación y la altura de una construcción que tiene cierta relación con la tradición arquitectónica de Formentera.

Una antigua capilla construida sobre un aljibe subterráneo es la encargada de marcar el eje longitudinal de la vivienda. Se trata de una arquitectura que busca el contexto a través de las relaciones con su entorno.

Está construida con bloques de termo arcilla revocados y pintados en blanco y forjados de hormigón armado. El cerramiento es de vidrio y madera de iroko. La misma madera se utiliza para realizar las divisiones interiores y los muebles.

Por el norte es por donde se encuentra el principal acceso a la vivienda. La casa se divide en dos mitades. El lado norte es el más expuesto; hay un pequeño estudio de arquitectura. En cambio, la vivienda, diseñada como un pequeño refugio para una pareja, se encuentra al sur. Estas dos mitades están separadas por un bloque, iluminado cenitalmente, realizado en madera de iroko, justo en la mitad, donde se integran librerías, armarios, baño, cocina, así como dos paredes correderas de iroko.

La casa-estudio de Marià fue diseñada y construida entre los años 2002 y 2004. Durante estos años España se encontraba en el periodo más largo de desarrollo económico. En 2002 comienza un proceso de aceleración económica y a finales de 2005 se completó este periodo de crecimiento ininterrumpido. Esto pudo, claramente, condicionar a Marià Castelló en la decisión de comenzar con este proyecto personal.

GILBERTO TOBON ARREMETE PENSAMIENTOS MACHISTAS CONTRA CONGRESISTA

“Soberana, obesa y coqueta” así contesta Gilberto Tobón Sanín a la periodista María del Pilar Aguilar, luego de que ella lo cuestionara por sus declaraciones uribistas, en las cuales él expresó que el expresidente Álvaro Uribe no había dado la orden de los falsos positivos y que él lo defendía así le cayeran rayos y centellas.

La periodista relató que el excandidato al congreso, Gilberto, le escribió por WhatsApp para recriminarle la entrevista. Él le dijo que la entrevista era puro coqueteo y que ella abría y cerraba los ojos como una vedette, además de dejarla como una timadora.

Tras conocerse este caso, la FLIP emitió una alerta para rechazar los comportamientos de Tobón, ya que él hostigo a María del Pilar durante la entrevista, además de ello se comprueba de que los mensajes que le envió son sexualizantes y usan calificativos machistas.
