Tumblr media
I believe Satan is a sucker for old school romance, you can't tell me otherwise.
He loves the idea of sending each other love letters and poems.
He often writes about you, by often I mean everytime he writes, it's about you.
Satan even uses an ink pen and paper, his penmanship is extraordinary.
He isn't really into romance novels, but in some of his mystery/murder-mysterys there is romance
You've read a handful of Satan's books, plus your own collection.
You've recently started reading an older Novel, it's written very poetic, the main characters have started exchanging small love notes to one another.
That gave you the most brilliant idea, you'd start writing notes to Satan, leaving them on his book marks and on the inside cover of his new novels.
Satan is very witty, it takes a lot to make him get flustered, but the first note he received from you, he blushed.
You've never been one to openly talk about how you are feeling, you express yourself in different ways, such as gift giving or quality time. You've also noticed Satan has a hard time expressing himself, instead resorts to poetry and writing love letters to you.
You are currently sitting in the HoL library, your current novel sitting on your lap. You messed with the spoon in your luke warm tea while reading the poetic lines. You smiled as the main characters declared their love for each other, a warm feeling flooding in your chest.
You are desperately waiting for Satan to come back from his meeting with Diavolo and his brothers, wanting to see his face when the little folded piece of paper slips out from his new book.
It took you quite a long time to think of this note, it's a poem. It probably sounds lame next to Satan's poetry, you've read famous poets work and they are nothing compared to The Avatar of Wraths'.
Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, the Library door opens. Satan gave a small smile, his teeth aren't showing it's just a small curve of his lips.
"Hello Kitten"
He leans down and kisses your forehead rather gently before grabbing his book and sitting next to you. You instinctively stretch your legs out into his lap, his slender fingers brushing against the skin of your ankle and shin.
Satan uses his other hand to open his book, and just as you planned the small piece of paper slowly falls into his lap against your legs. You shyly hide behind your book, pretending to read. You could feel his chest and torso rumble while he read the poem to himself.
It's hard to remember what you wrote, the adrenaline making you loose your memory and only focus on now.
You do remember how hard you thought about all the write words, and what kind of poem it would be. To make his heart flutter the way he makes yours leap and soar. To make him feel the tingling sensation that spreads into your finger tips when you feel yourself falling in love more and more.
Goosebumps erupted on your skin, his hands gliding further up your legs before gripping under your knees and bringing you into his lap.
Your nose was pressed to headband of your book, the delightful smell of the old paper pages filling your nose. Your cheeks are on fire, you could feel the tingling of the blush spreading down your neck and to your ears.
Satan could only chuckle and remove the book from your face and set it on the sofa beside him. His hands set themselves on your hips, his glowing green eyes shining like brightest star in a dark night.
He gently kissed you, his hands moving to cup your face and rub your cheek bones. The kiss was full of love and passion, slow and steady. Both of your hearts pounding in your chest, skin on fire from each others touch.
He pulled away and hugged you, his head rested against your neck and shoulder. Your chest fluttered, your heart was in your throat as Satan's lips brushed against your pulse then he spoke.
"I love you"
Tumblr media
I strongly think Asmo designs clothes, and you are his muse and model.
He absolutely loves when you agree to be his inspiration.
And he also loves when you let him take your measurements. He likes how your body feels in his hands.
Asmo is very observant, it doesn't seem like it cause he's utterly obsessed with himself. But he knows everything about everyone. (Gossip King)
He especially knows every detail about you, you decide if that's creepy or sweet.
He absolutely loves when you tease him when working, it gives him excitement!
"MC, My darling muse I need your beauty." Asmo falls against his bed next to you, his delicate skin pressed against his silk pillowcase. You hum setting your phone down and moving his hair away from his eyes the way he likes. He smiled looking at you with stars in his eyes.
"What are you thinking and what was your inspiration?" You asked leaning on your arm. Asmo was quiet, his eyes scanning your face and down your body.
"You are always inspiration Darling." He smiled before hoping out of his bed and opening his fabric closet. You giggled and stood next to your boyfriend admiring the hundreds of fabrics.
"Stand over here." He points to the large wood box coated in glitter and pink paint. You nodded slipping off your clothes, leaving only your undergarments.
"MC, you devious human." Asmo giggled, suddenly appearing behind you. His slim hands glided around your body adjusting the measuring tape at your hip. "Always so beautiful..".
Your skin erupted with goosebumps, your shoulders shaking with a slight shiver at his touch. He giggles, he nails running over you rub cage.
"Hold still MC, or my measurements will be wrong." He pressed gently kisses along your skin, your face was rosy staring down at his thick, pink hair.
"Asmo, the tape is loose." You teased watching him adjust the tape.
"You little Minx.." He bit the soft flesh of your hip making you yelp. He giggled loudly before walking over to his sowing machine and writing your measurements on his note pad.
You reached down for your clothes but his voice stopped you, "Keep them off Love, I still need more measurements." His smile was sweet, but devilish.
God, he loved looking at you. So comfortable in his presence, just helping him gives him joy he hasn't had since the fall. You help him in more ways then one. And he loves you more than anything, including himself. And he never lets your forget that.

Kamisato Ayato x Reader
Tumblr media
I got sick while making this so if some scenes/parts just don't make sense I apologize No, I'm definitely not using my sickness as an excuse for my bad writing
WARNINGS: !!Mentions of Y/Ns mental state!! (Only once at the start) Super ooc, bad grammar, profanity, and full of nonsense
Words: 1484
Part 1, Part 2 (You’re here!)
Tumblr media
It’s been a few months since you left the estate
You still haven’t received any news about Ayato's return, which makes you slightly worried, but hey, at least these past few months, your mental health has gotten better
No Ayato = no unnecessary drama = peace = better mental state
Tumblr media
Your shop has been doing well
The old regulars are now back and happily buying the things they needed but couldn't get due to the market price
Everything is back to normal
Tumblr media
Yeah, no. It isn't completely back to normal
You have quite the reputation and even have multiple names. One popular name is "Two-faced Demon"
Why? There have been rumors circulating that you talked badly about Ayato, your spouse, around others while remaining an innocent doll around Ayato and vice versa
And due to your not-so-favorable reputation, you sometimes get some unwanted customers that want to ruin your business
Thankfully, though, you have some reliable friends that keep unwanted customers out
But even that has downsides
Some people are now wary of your shop and refuse to even look in the same direction as your shop when they pass by it, as they might suddenly get attacked by being an “unwanted customer”. It's pretty stupid to do, but it’s best to be cautious, right?
Reopening the shop has helped you, sure, but even that becomes stressful
It’s hard to manage it all by yourself, and you surely can’t leave it all alone when you go adventuring in the near future
And so you came up with a solution to reduce the overwhelming stress and future problems concerning the shop. Hire employees!
With the help of Thoma and Ayaka, you managed to scout a few trustworthy people who’re perfect for the job
All of them are quick learners and hard workers, which is perfect! With only a few more pieces of guidance, you can peacefully leave everything in their capable hands
Tumblr media
Two months passed quickly, and everyone can now handle everything by themselves, even without your presence
Li Hua, in particular, is quite the master at her job.
You won’t have any lingering worries with her taking care of everything there
And with that, you’re all ready to go back to adventuring!
Tumblr media
“Leaving already?”
“Hm? Oh! Heizou, yup! The unsolved mysteries out there are calling out to me."
“Oh really?”
“I can hear it whispering, “Y/N~ Y/N~~ Come solve this mysterious ancient puzzle!””
“Puzzles..Say, what if I come with you?”
“No, you ca—” You get cut off by Heizou pressing a finger on your lips
“Ah, ah, ah, I promise it’ll be fun! Besides, I can prove to be extremely useful to you when it comes to solving puzzles.”
“Yeah, but—”
“Do you doubt my abilities? If so, that really hurts my poor, poor heart.”
“I know your capabilities better than anyone Heizou. We grew up together.”
“If you know what my capabilities are, then why won’t you let me come then." Heizou pouts.
“You perfectly know why.”
“Do I?”
“Don’t play dumb with me. You have an important job here, Heizou. I can’t just take you with me.”
“I don’t even know when I’ll be back in Inazuma.”
“Y/N! Everything’s already set, just waiting on you,” Beidou semi-whispers.
“I’ll be there soon. Just..Saying some goodbyes to a friend.”
Heizou watches from the sidelines as you interact with Beidou. A tinge of jealousy and longing is present in his eyes, but it goes away quickly before anyone can see it
"Soo, I guess this is it. I’ll try my best to keep in contact with you. Promise. And maybe when we meet again, we can have a drink or two? "You held out a pinky finger towards Heizou
Heizou chuckles. “Well then, I’ll hold you up to that promise.” He intertwines his own pinky with yours
'Oh..'
Only now, as you say your final goodbyes to Heizou, do you realize how charming your best friend is.
His burgundy hair is flowing in the wind, his light olive green eyes are glistening in the sun, and his charming smile shows a hint of mischievousness.
'I'm sure whoever he'll get together with will be lucky.'
You quickly turn away from him upon realizing what you’re currently thinking
“Hey~ Why’d you turn away from me so harshly? Do you really not want to see my face that badly?" He says in a teasing tone, almost as if knowing what was going on inside your head
“That’s not it. I just—Ugh." You stumble over your words. Now that you think about it, Heizou has always had this effect on you. The man just knew how to make you speechless and stumble on your own words
“Alright, alright, that’s enough teasing.” Beidou interrupts
'Beidou! My savior!'
With that, Beidou drags you over to the Alcor(Crux fleet?? What’s the difference again)
While boarding, you catch a glimpse of platinum blonde hair
After settling down in your temporary room on the ship
You set out to find the owner of the platinum blonde hair. It’s been quite a long time since you last met, after all
Tumblr media
“It seems that fate has once again made our paths cross.”
Oh, how you missed hearing that melodic voice of his
“It seems so..” You sit down next to where he sits at the edge
“Who would’ve thought you’d be here all along?”
Silence envelopes you both
“It hurt a lot, you know..”
Kazuha remains silent and listens attentively
“You suddenly went missing after the shogunate declared you to be an enemy for eternity. I was worried sick. I thought that maybe you’d been killed.”
“I’m sorry” is all that leaves Kazuha's lips. It’s spoken so softly and quietly that one would think it was just a whisper of the wind
There in the back of the ship, hidden away from everyone, you sit by Kazuha as you cry into his arms and whisper the things you’ve always wanted to say to the man, and even the things that are of another matter. The worries and pain you’ve kept to yourself
It's sort of ironic that instead of being open to your husband, you’re much more open to your other friends. Especially this man called Kaedehara Kazuha, he has this air around him that makes you feel secure and relaxed and spill all your secrets and feelings, adding to the fact that you've known this man for much longer than you've known your husband.
You know that whatever secret you tell him, he’ll keep it to himself until his very last breath. That’s how much you trust and confide in Kazuha.
Tumblr media
"Hey..I'm sorry for, y'know, this whole crying thing.."
"It's perfectly fine, dove. It's best to let it all out rather than keeping it to yourself."
"Besides, isn't listening to your troubles also part of my job as your knight?"
"Pfft, my knight, huh? Well, then, Mr. Knight care to tell me why you didn't bother to tell me where you went? As my knight, it's only right for you to report to me."
"That's..I apologize. I had to flee immediately and couldn't risk putting you in danger by contacting you."
"What about contacting me by using another person? Like, I don't know, making Beidou deliver a message to me."
"I'd rather not trouble her with my problems. She's already done me a big favor by letting me hide out here."
"Fine, fine. I won't push the issue any further. Guess you're forgiven for now, Mr. Knight."
"Why, thank you, my liege" he chuckles while giving you a bow
The day ends with your and Kazuha's laughter filling the air
Tumblr media
Once the moon has disappeared, the sun appears again on the horizon.
And the sun signifies that a new day has come.
You woke up to the sounds of the lively crew moving on and about. After getting yourself ready, you begin to head out.
Upon arriving on the deck, you notice how you've almost reached Liyue Harbor. It seems that the sea decided to be kind and didn't cause the voyage to be longer than necessary.
After what felt like hours, you've finally arrived and docked.
Kazuha, being the gentleman that he is, decided to lend you a hand in getting off the ship.
"I'd love to show you around, but unfortunately, the Alcor will be leaving soon after getting some resources we need." Kazuha tried to hide his unhappiness by giving you his signature charming smile, but as you've known him since you guys were kids, you quickly saw past his facade.
Seeing Kazuha smile with the sun perfectly behind him, as if purposefully illuminating him, is a breath-taking sight. First Heizou, now Kazuha, why is it only now that you've noticed how good-looking your childhood friends are?
To be fair, Kazuha was quite popular with the ladies; even when you guys were still children, the girls would flock around him as if he were some deity.
'Wait, no, Y/N, stop thinking about these things. You already have a husband! You have to stay loyal, no matter how shitty your husband may be. You can't just cheat or think these things about other people.'
'Well, this is it. A new place, a new life'
Tumblr media
giuwfgeahsjk, this is it for this part! I might make the next part tomorrow, but for now, I need my sleep.
NOTE: I DO NOT CONDONE INFIDELITY. THIS IS PURELY A WORK OF FICTION.

IT IS TIME FOR YOU TO COME HOME
Once upon a time a group of people decided to build a school. A school as huge as their magic could muster. With boundaries and spells to protect the school and the villages inside. Children of sworn enemies would be joined here. For the first and maybe the last time in their existence they would learn of the other sides. They would interact with each other and live and laugh and hate. Like they were all the same.
The group that build the academy was made out of creatures from all realms and all alliances. Demons and angels alike worked together on making an institute for all those that desired knowledge and superiority. They assigned the place of headmaster to a mysterious being without a name. They would rule the school for eternity in their endless knowledge. No one knows who or what the headmaster is, all that is known is that they have been there for as long as can be remembered…

Transmigrated into a Heartthrob Novel and Went OOC/穿进万人迷文的我人设崩了 by 东施娘
Tumblr media
(Season 1 audiodrama cover art on Mao'er FM. Will we ever get a Season 2???)
Premise
Fang Chaozhou transmigrates into a danmei xianxia novel -- specifically, a "stock-picking" novel where the author introduces many attractive men but doesn't reveal the identity of the real love interest until the end. The twist is that Fang Chaozhou hasn't finished the novel, so he isn't sure who is the real love interest, but he really doesn't think it's the body he has taken over: a shixiong whose unrequited love for the original protagonist -- heartthrob shidi Xue Danrong-- eventually drives him to the dark side/demonic path.
Fang Chaozhou tries to keep the plot on track, but he also wants to distance himself from the competition for Xue Danrong's affections to save himself from becoming a demon. However, as the plot moves along, all of the original protagonist's potential suitors, including Xue Danrong himself, become interested in Fang Chaozhou instead.
Fang Chaozhou is the your typical laid-back but clever transmigrator. He is really a "salted fish" who doesn't want to do the hard work of cultivating or chasing Xue Danrong, and just wants to spend the rest of his days reading novels and eating snacks. The only exception he'll make is try to get strong enough to make sure he can still play his role to move the plot along.
Xue Danrong is a "cold beauty" -- unreasonably beautiful and talented, technically polite but keeps everyone at an arm's length. He is the shou protagonist is the original novel but becomes a gong in the current universe. He pushes himself to extreme lengths for his cultivation, and really shouldn't have much to say to a salted fish like Fang Chouzhou, but a magical poisonous snake bite that makes him temporarily desire Fang Chouzhou, and its effects seem to linger long after.
And finally, a very important and popular "romantic rival" is Zhongli Yueshui, the main couple's Grand-master and leader of their sect, so powerful and mysterious he is barely described in the original novel. He has mostly withdrawn from worldly affairs, but occasionally instructs Xue Danrong, who is the child of his old friends. He is possibly the most popular "stock" in the original novel -- and becomes Xue Danrong's most fierce competition in the current universe.
What I like about it
Humor from the transmigrator protagonist's commentary of the events in the novel, and his salted-fish antics in an elite cultivation sect
Light plot that is easy to follow. Technically it's a xianxia novel, but the real tension comes from the progression of the relationship; you don't need to remember any complicated stuff about cultivation or sect politics. That being said, there is no shortage of:
Drama and confrontations! Magical beasts wrecking havoc and nearly burying our heroes alive. One of the main CP nearly dies getting hit behind his back by a fellow sect member. Someone gets amnesia. Someone gets covertly possessed by a demon. (And all the romantic rivals are still popping up in the most inconvenient times trying to kidnap Fang Chaozhou.)
Memorable characters! The Demon Venerable who will do anything to get what and who he wants, his idiot son who jumps between wanting to compete with his father or accept Chaozhou as his "stepmom", the cross-dressing young master with very twisted kinks and priorities, the magical pheasant who is emphatically not a chicken, and so on
Zhongli Yueshui, who is also a memorable character but so beloved he deserves his own bullet. I haven't seen readers rally this hard for a SML in danmei since Lang Junxia from Joyful Reunion. More on this later.
A shou who is affectionate and doting after realizing his own feelings; he initiates kisses and hugs to reassure his partner -- I just love it when the characters act like they are really happy and in love.
Surprising tear-jerker reveal of what happened in the end in the original timeline.
On the other hand
The main romance development feels a bit cliched. It's your typical "cold but intense younger gong" and "oblivious and laid-back older shou". The gong's attraction start under the influence of a magical poison, and they start having sex due to a combination of amnesia, life-threatening magic, and misinformation/miscommunication about the status of their relationship. Even though it's later revealed that they genuinely have feelings for each other, I wish the main couple would have developed their relationship more organically and intentionally.
For a novel of this length, the world-building is fairly superficial. Things that should underpin the functioning of their society, like a imperial government for regular humans and tension with demonic cultivators, randomly get thrown in mid-story and doesn't really impact anything. It doesn't feel like a setting with its own world and logic, just an empty playground for the main romance to occur.
Fang Chaozhou's "heartthrob" status is also a bit illogical. In the original novel, Xue Danrong is the heartthrob because he is extremely beautiful, but in this universe, most of his suitors lust after him briefly and quickly move on to Fang Chaozhou instead, but without a clear reason. Like it's drama for the sake of drama.
The ending to the original story line and the reason for Fang Chaozhou's transmigration gets revealed in the end of the novel, and some inconsistencies in the story can sort of be explained by this. It's more than what we get in most transmigration novels, but I'm not really sure I like it.
Overall
This is funny and romance-centric transmigration story set in a xianxia universe. It's nothing too special when you look at the story elements by themselves -- the romance is a bit cliched and the plot outside of that is nearly non-existent -- but the work as a whole works surprisingly well and kept me reading.
Definitely a fun and relaxing read, or a heartwarming tragedy, unless you become a fan and shipper of Zhongli Yueshui ....
and last but not least, the elephant in the room too-popular Shizu on his mountain [spoilers ahead]
Full disclaimer: I don't really like Zhongli Yueshui as a love interest; I feel like he is a character who has exhibited obvious flaws and I am a bit baffled by the extent of his popularity over the main love interest.
I can see several things working together to contribution to his popularity:
The relative "weakness" of the main relationship -- as I mentioned earlier, they are cute but there is nothing too special or deep there.
He has more screen-time than the other romantic rivals -- I think in the first half of the book Fang Chaozhou almost spends more time with him than Xue Danrong.
He is also the only "romantic rival" who isn't written like a obvious canon fodder with ridiculous comedic traits.
He has a lot of traits of a typical romantic hero: beautiful, powerful, older but with the wisdom and prestige to match. He is strict but still make exceptions for the shou and does a lot specifically just to take care of him.
Him and Xue Danrong have similar cold and stern personality, to the extent you can almost argue that he is a more powerful, extreme, and possessive version of Danrong, so in effect his popularity is "cannibalizing" on the main ship because they have the same appeal.
What I don't like about Zhongli Yueshui comes down to a sense of him having abused his power and authority in his pursuit of Fang Chaozhou, and it icks me out especially because Xue Danrong saw and trusted him as an elder in their sect and a friend of his parents. However, Zhongli Yueshui went ahead with decisions like erasing Xue Danrong's memories of Fang Chaozhou under the pretext of helping Danrong. Most of the ambiguously intimate contact between Zhongli Yueshui and Fang Chaozhou also happen because Fang Chaozhou 1) must submit to his authority as sect leade, and 2) physically cannot resist against his greater power and cultivation.
I understand why his character can be compelling. He is strong, mysterious, and almost saintly, and this type of character unexpectedly catching "earthly" feelings can feel so special. But in this specific instance, I just don't find his actions romantic at all ...
Zhongli Yueshui eventually ascends to godhood, but still maintains a magical illusion of the time Fang Chaozhou spent on his mountain. However, I think the scenes in his illusion shows that he still doesn't understand what Fang Chaozhou truly wants ...

{{ roleplay blog for belphegor from obey me!: one master to rule them all. remake. }}
{{ information under the cut. }}
Tumblr media
user manual
21+/indie/semi selective
mostly blog/online style posting supplemented with narrative. may do threads as though theyre in-person, but i like to talk about them first rather than just have it happen suddenly.
only canon up to the pact; if you know what that means, that’s good! if you don’t, it isn’t a big issue.
please don’t just approach my character as though it’s in person without first asking me; that is to say, if you’d like that sort of thread/roleplay, please talk with me first.
ic is not ooc. this is playing pretend on the internet for fun, fictional stories.
potentially mature themes; this is one of the cardinal sins. he likes horror and isn’t immune to violent outbursts; canonically, he’s murdered the protagonist in cold blood once and then he really tried it twice the moment he thought he saw them breathing and upright again. him and his brothers have eviscerated other demons as a bonding exercise. his favorite food involves monster brains in a stew. themes of depression and grief. discretion advised.
do feel free to throw anons/magic anons at belphie. magic is a factor in this universe, it’s not beyond the pale to think a mysterious power can throw things at him; i do have a right to pick or not pick ones i do or don’t like.
do feel free to make comments at belphie on the dashboard, i mean. hopefully obviously. interaction is good.
do feel free to message me/dm me if you need anything. let me know if i’ve missed something, or tell me if you have any ideas or want to see about anything. its fun to bounce ideas around, it feels friendly and sociable.
i am so relaxed. very little bothers me fictionally/media-wise. i am not going into politics on this blog, let alone over cartoons, i mean… i made it to relax and have fun… please understand.

"and not just because of the deliberate switch in terms of the system removing her agency. Her main emotional arc really revolved around her dad, which was resolved fairly early on." That's such a good point! I didn't notice that latter part until you pointed it out. I wish we got to see the specifics of Miaomiao falling in love with Mu Sheng. How her behavior and thoughts subtly changes. That's one of the best parts of a romance story. Narratively, I'm not sure what the purpose of the love bracelet was. Miaomiao was so happy when she found out that Mu Sheng was going to confess to her. She already knows she likes him.
"so getting a fixed version of the book was probably something she would appreciate, but it didn't get much focus"
I think the problem was that although Miaomiao once knew the plot of Fu Zhou's novel in the drama, the audience doesn't. We're only shown the very beginning and the fallout scene between Mu Yao, Mu Sheng, and Liu Fuyi. We have nothing to compare the new timeline to. In this new timeline, Liu Fuyi shares the secret about his mysterious master with Mu Yao (that's a major change), but the audience doesn't know what Miaomiao has changed for Liu Fuyi to confess.
"Beyond that, she only mentioned that her dream made her feel powerful, and that she had formed strong connections, which is good, but again, they didn't amount to anything specific."
She says she forms strong connections, but the narrative doesn't show this. That Mu Yao and Liu Fuyi easily believe she wants to marry the marquis is the nail in the coffin. To be fair, until the last third of the drama where she gets completely sideline, I was fine with not seeing the development of her friendships with Liu Fuyi and Mu Yao like in the novel. My point is purely that her thoughts don't match the story we've seen. And that dissonance takes me out of that show.
Yes! I thought I was the only one that felt this way. I don't think there's anything wrong with the ideas introduced in the final episode, but the lack of specific details makes it seem like empty platitudes. Miaomiao's line that the solutions in Fu Zhou's novels are the lyrics to the lullabies was my favorite part. I wish we had seen more details like that.
"Maybe kinda wacky, but it would be fun if she could enter the story or leave it whenever she wanted. Maybe not a long-term solution, but it would still have been nice I think 😭 Then she could see all the people she had come to care for, and still have her mundane life as well."
That would be so fun! I would have also been happy if we see Fu Zhou writing extras or side stories about the Demon Hunters world with Miaomiao's input.
So, the novel has that extra chapters are very cracky and OOC. The author even warns the readers with the chapter titles. Miaomiao and Mu Sheng eventually return to her futuristic world where there's a government agency that manages transmigration and Mu Sheng gets a job there. I read this fanfic where Mu Sheng goes back and forth to deliver Miaomiao's letters with Mu Yao and Liu Fuyi, so they can still keep in touch =).
"I also think they could have highlighted her relationship to Fu Zhou as an author more towards the end, beyond her being his inspiration. If we had more concrete ways in which his writing had inspired her, it could have made the ending more mutual"
Exactly! I want to see how her life has changed because of him. It was revealed he's one of her five weibo followers, and I wish they had interacted a little bit on Weibo before the dream, so its not so one-sided.
I wonder why they aged up Miaomiao from her novel counterpart. The ending would naturally feel happier if she was in college without the responsibilities of an adult.
Love Game in Eastern Fantasy is undoubtedly a happy ending for Fu Zhou. He survived his brain surgery, all of his wishes came true, and the person he has had a crush on since middle school came to his fan meeting.
Is it any sort of ending, happy or sad, for MiaoMiao? Not really. She's back to where she started in episode 1. We see how the past 32 episodes have changed Fu Zhou in real life, but we don't get to see any of MiaoMiao's mental or emotional progress. At best, her efforts have led her favorite author to fix a story she didn't like.
I simply want to see a concrete scene of MiaoMiao being happier at the end of the drama than she was at the beginning. It can be something as small as her calling her mom and saying she dreamed about her dad and how that made her feel.

Review: 天官赐福 Tiān Guān Cì Fú (Heaven Official's Blessing)
Tumblr media
Notes:
(Very) long post ahead
Contains spoiler
This is my personal review and does not represent the entire audience, you are free to agree or not agree with what I’ve written here
Feel free to reply/send me a message if there are things you want to discuss
Summary:
The most beloved Crown Prince, pride of the Kingdom of Xianle with abundance of talents and achievements, Xie Lian, ascended to Heaven and became a martial god at the young age of 17 on the path to fulfill his dream "to save the common people".
Three years after his ascension, he saw his kingdom beginning to decline and in order to save his beloved country, Xie Lian defied the rules of Heaven and descended back to the mortal realm. Nevertheless, instead of saving them, his interference ended up accelerating the fall of Xianle, annihilating the once prosperous nation under the war of rebellion and a mysterious, horrifying plague.
The people who once praised and worshipped him day and night now condemned him, his devotees left him, they burnt his temples and divine statues, and Xie Lian himself was ultimately banished from the Heaven.
He ascended for the second time a short while later, but was banished once more very soon after. Since then, he lived among the mortals - surviving by collecting junks as he was now branded as the "God of Misfortune", the "Scrap Collecting Immortal".
800 years later, Xie Lian ascended again for the third time. Though having neither temples nor devotees, he accepted his responsibility as a martial god and carried on with his duties until one day, there came a certain, incidental encounter with a mysterious youth clad in red.
STORY: 7/10
TGCF overall is an (almost) complete, satisfying read with well-written twists and development.
Unlike the two previous MXTX's novels, the main pairing here (HuaLian) did not have to go through complicated misunderstandings and is a beautiful representation of love and devotion. Of course, this means there is a lack of conflict between them, but considering all the trials and tribulations the characters have gone through, this lack of conflict feels like a relieving fresh spring amidst the painful and exhausting journey throughout the entire five books.
The best and my most favorite plot twist is the Earth Master Ming Yi having been dead for a while, and the "Ming Yi" we know turns out to be the Black Water Submerging Boats, He Xuan. I'm the kind of person who always suspects characters, but even my furthest suspicion was "only" him being the Reverend of Empty Words, not He Xuan.
Truthfully, prior to reading this novel, I've seen Shi Qingxuan's "MING-XIONG, I'M SORRY x9999" post before without context, and I thought Ming Yi was going to die a tragic death because of Shi Qingxuan. Turns out it's kind of the opposite, huh? Nice one, really.
I also like how each character's "end" feels satisfying. Especially for the villains, they didn't necessarily have to die some tragic, vengeful death, but was provided with an ending that perfectly fits their background story and deeds. For example, in most stories, a character like Xuan Ji would be most likely be given some well-deserved punishment as her death, given everything she's done. But no, in the end she was given a reality check and was finally able to let go of her hundreds of years grudge. And then Qi Rong - I will talk more about him later on in the "Character" section.
One part I really love is the Extra Chapter about the Cave of Ten Thousand Gods. The chapter itself overall is mostly nonsensical and chaotic, but it was just so touching when HuaLian created a "Little Hua Cheng" statue to accompany Xie Lian's "Crown Prince who Pleased the Gods" statue, especially when this Little Hua Cheng statue gave Crown Prince Xie Lian statue a flower, and then Crown Prince Xie Lian received it, lifted him up and carried him in his arms. This one was maybe a bit biased because as much as I love the current HuaLian, I have a special soft spot for the young Xie Lian carrying, cradling the little Hua Cheng back then in the past. ;v;
Though, with all due respect, I must say that TGCF is actually below my expectation.
The biggest issue I have with TGCF is... What is Xie Lian's motivation? What drives him to move forward in the story? What is even the whole story's purpose?
I'm not quite sure how to word this properly, but let me give some examples.
When you read Harry Potter, you know immediately that Voldemort is the bad guy and he must be defeated.
When you read the Lord of the Rings, you know immediately that the One Ring must be destroyed to prevent Sauron from regaining his power.
Or, in MXTX previous works...
In SVSSS, it was clear since the beginning that Shen Yuan's mission is to fix the "Proud Immortal Demon Way" if he wants to survive.
In MDZS, it was clear that Wei Wuxian, together with Lan Wangji's, needs to unravel the mystery behind that fierce left arm. All of their past stories and WangXian getting together in the end are just something they discovered along the way, not the initial "motivation" that drives the character to move forward.
What about TGCF? The Xie Lian who ascended for the third time actually looks like he just wants to go along with the flow, carrying out his duties day by day with responsibility. When Bai Wuxiang later, later, later on appeared to haunt him again, it didn't seem like Xie Lian has any ambition to hunt him down or exact a revenge, just that he wanted to forget about Bai Wuxiang and never recall anything about him ever again. The main character looks like he's not being driven by anything, just...carrying on where the plot takes him? It's just missions after missions and whatever huge things happening in between is just something they accidentally passed by along the way.
At this point, the only purpose of the story I can think of is bringing Hua Cheng and Xie Lian together. The romance is great, I have no complain. But if it's just that, no need to jammed-pack 250+ chapters just to make two people getting together?
Speaking of which, I also think that the way new characters keep being introduced all the way to almost the final showdown of the story feels info dump-ish, because the background story needs to be dropped there along with the characters, but then most of these characters fade away immediately after.
For example, the previous Civil God before Ling Wen, who looks like he’s going to pose some real trouble, but then was easily defeated and was never mentioned again afterwards. And this is especially true for He Xuan; after such a huge arc where he committed such extreme things, after that he was barely mentioned again, even having his “strong impression” leveled down by the joke about him being the poorest Calamity and owing lots of debts to Hua Cheng.
Basically what makes TGCF a long story is because there are too many stories about the side characters in addition to the main characters that are dumped out of the blue instead of slowly being revealed along the way.
Though, I love how the story gradually unravels the "Four Famous Tales" because initially, I thought it wasn't something crucial, and I wished they could've done this for other characters, too.
There is a little bit of plot holes here and there, as in who actually cut open Jian Lan/Lan Chang's baby and made it a ghost, and for what? Even if it turned out that she just met a bad guy or nobody important, at least provide an explanation in one paragraph? Especially because important side characters like Feng Xin and Mu Qing are involved here, so I'm pretty sure us readers need some explanation.
And more importantly, how can Jun Wu become the Emperor martial god? There's no mention about him ascending, only that he annihilated a dynasty of gods before sitting on the throne of the Great Martial Hall. But how can he, like, emitted god-like aura and not some evil aura? Is it because he used to be a god? But he's a ghost? Explanation where???
The gags and comedies are pretty fun, but honestly, the more I read, the more they ruin the atmosphere and suspense, added with the uncalled PDA between Hua Cheng and Xie Lian even during the most important moments. Honestly, I was bored the fuck out of my life from the moment they start fighting Jun Wu with those divine gundams, and only start gaining interest again much later on when Hua Cheng dissipated into butterflies.
Not saying the story's bad. Just... It's not up to my expectation... Characters being inserted here and there with a bunch of background story, gags and a show of PDA being flaunted during crucial moments. And when Mei Nianqing started telling the truth about the Kingdom of Wuyong, that's just plain info dump right there, seriously...
CHARACTERS: 7/10
Interesting characters, but only a few bore a lasting impression on me. Other than the main characters, which are Xie Lian and Hua Cheng, the only side characters (minus Bai Wuxiang as the main villain) who left quite some impression on me were probably just Feng Xin and Mu Qing.
Pei Ming is okay, at least he is still memorable until the end, and his character improved, too.
He Xuan, after having been introduced with such extreme, after his arc is over, was easily forgotten just like that.
Mei Nianqing, is borderline Deus Ex-Machina with a huge chunk of info dump that could solve everything, then he stopped being useful for the rest of the story.
Shi Qingxuan... Honestly, he's almost annoying, too noisy. I don’t hate him (and I kind of like him initially), but the way his character was being handled and presented post-Black Water arc feels disappointingly lazy and he was just there to make the party more merry.
Xie Lian himself, as the protagonist, how do I say this... This is maybe due to the translator's writing style (not MXTX’s fault), but whenever he screams in all capslock, it feels too extreme and borderline OOC? Of course, the original novel written in hanzi couldn't have included capslock.
What's great about him, though, is that despite all he'd gone through, he can still retain a pure heart and could not be swayed to be evil, just as he himself said "Body in the abyss, heart in paradise".
Now Hua Cheng, he is overall a super interesting character and I personally love this type of male characters. But he seriously is way too OP, almost like the original Luo Binghe (Bing-ge) a.k.a. too ideal, too perfect, no flaws, always capable of easily finding a way out in every single peril. I only forgive him for being like this because he dissipated into butterflies at the end of the battle with Jun Wu, making me think "oh, finally he's actually not invincible".
Still, his devotion to Xie Lian is very well written, very well presented, and his "I am forever your most devoted believer" is just downright the most powerful line in the whole story.
Now I promised to talk about Qi Rong, yeah? I haven't the slightest idea why it is even necessary to have Qi Rong as the Night-touring Green Lantern. I mean, yes he is there to make up the number of the Four Great Calamities, but that was for the characters who live in that world. As the novel's reader, I don't see any particularly important roles there for Qi Rong other than being an annoying meme fodder despite his actually pretty-cool first foreshadowing and appearance? Even his issue with Lang Qianqiu does not seem to give that much impact on the overall story, it could've just passed simply being explained in several pages.
Though I'd say he's got the best character development compared to others. Instead of dying as some hateful villain, the way he ended up deciding to protect Guzi at the cost of his own life can already be expected from miles away, but still bittersweet and touching nonetheless - how this crazed, mental person could still love when being presented with such pure, innocent feelings to the point that he acknowledged Guzi as a his own son.
By the way, E Ming and Ruoye are cute, I take no criticism.
TECHNICAL ASPECTS: 8/10
I can't really describe this with words, but MXTX's overall writing technique has greatly improved since MDZS.
It feels more "solid" to read instead of scattered here and there.
The info distribution has improved (fewer info dump compared to before), the story's no longer switching between past and present all of a sudden.
Description of characters and environment are sufficient, the plot is progressing steadily.
Several issues I have with this aspect though, the Prologue being ten pages is just way too long, I don't think I need that much information being stuffed right to my face right from the beginning.
There are excessive use of "Turns out..." every single time an explanation is going to come.
"Xie Lian didn't know whether he should cry or laugh" is honestly has been used probably more than 50 times just in the last two books. Although I'm reading a translation, I'm pretty sure the original Chinese version is being repetitive with this phrase, as well, because the translators couldn't just whip up any other phrase from thin air and put it in someone else's novel.
Almost half of scene transition is always caused by some sudden, external disturbance like "All of a sudden they heard someone's coming", "All of a sudden X visits their room", etc.
OVERALL SCORE: 7.3/10
Worth to read, satisfying overall. The main pairing's love story is just so well written and sweet. As long as you can withstand the violence and gore, though. 😂
TGCF highlights perhaps one of the ugliest natures of mankind: Being nice to someone as long as they're beneficial, and immediately throwing them away once the benefit was no more.
Once that person does not seem to be beneficial anymore, everyone would leave them instantly, even turning on them and start spitting on them without even trying to understand the reason why said person "stopped being beneficial".
Both as a Crown Prince and a martial god, Xie Lian and the Crown Prince of Wuyong were praised, revered, worshipped by the citizens of Xianle and Wuyong respectively. Because they were always helping, always fulfilling the people's wishes. But how easily it was for those very same people to turn on Xie Lian and the Crown Prince of Wuyong when they encountered misfortunes, completely turning a blind eye to the laborious effort both characters have been putting to save them from annihilation, even if it was visible in broad daylight.
It is also worth to note another trait of mankind that this story underlines: To always find a scapegoat or blame others for one's own misfortune and failure - be it another human being, another group of people, the government, even the gods - after having taking their generosity for granted.
Which is why I think the true villain of the story is not Bai Wuxiang, but those citizens of the ancient Wuyong who were now nothing more than resentful spirits eternally burning within the lava of Tonglu Mountain - a well deserved punishment after what they did to their Crown Prince.

lan zhan transmigrator au part 2
part 1 is here. i will most likely be putting this up on ao3 once i’ve settled on a title.
By the time he and Lan Xichen had made it down from the Cold Pond and into the buildings of Cloud Recesses, Lan Zhan had started to realise it was later in the day than he’d thought. He needed more information, but he wasn’t sure how to ask. Where had he been earlier that day, what had this body been doing? Lan Xichen had mentioned something about a fever. What was the story behind that? Lan Zhan didn’t recall anything about it being mentioned in the original novel, but maybe it had just escaped the protagonist’s notice.
“Brother,” he asked delicately. Addressing Lan Xichen by name seemed a bit too friendly for this reserved character. Lan Zhan certainly couldn’t call him by his personal name, because he didn’t know it. “How did you know to look for me in the Cold Pond?”
“One of the guards at the front gate came to tell me he’d seen you, and you were heading that way,” Lan Xichen replied. “He said you looked unwell. What were you doing leaving the Cloud Recesses, Wangji? You should have been resting.” A soulful expression of brotherly disappointment graced his perfectly proportioned face.
Of course Lan Zhan couldn’t answer his question! He had no memory of what this body had been doing before he’d occupied it. In the original, it had been implied that Lan Wangji had just returned from a night hunt, but Lan Zhan wasn’t sure if that was actually true or not, or how the original’s mysterious illness might have affected things.
However, this did give him one piece of unwelcome information: If Lan Wangji had come through the gate and re-entered the cloud recesses, then he had probably already encountered the Jiang disciples… and stopped them from entering!
There was not a lot Lan Zhan could do about this right now. Lan Xichen seemed to be leading him towards a specific building. From the sign above the door, it seemed to be the healing room, where sick or injured members of the Lan sect would go to be treated.
Lan Zhan had no idea that such a building had existed! It had never come up in the novel, though of course it made sense that it would be there. It would be difficult to go all the way down the mountain to the nearby Caiyi Town for a medical emergency, and the common people there might not know how to treat some of the problems a cultivator might encounter.
The room Lan Zhan was led into was elegant and spacious, with an astringent, herbal scent in the air. It had an overall light colour scheme-- white paper in the windows, white drapes dividing the room into sections-- but was furnished with contrasting dark wood. The source of the smell was a Lan disciple sitting at a low table, grinding some presumably medicinal herbs with a mortar and pestle.
Lan Xichen led Lan Zhan over to sit at a low bench, and hovered anxiously around him as an unfamiliar man came to attend to him. The man must have been some sort of doctor, but Lan Zhan had no way of knowing, as once again he had never been mentioned in the novel. The unknown doctor man pressed two fingers to Lan Zhan’s wrist to take his pulse. Lan Zhan gave what was surely a very OOC flinch at the feeling of foreign spiritual energy coming into contact with his own.
In his previous life, Lan Zhan had of course been aware of the idea that there was a network of qi flowing throughout his body. But having heard about a thing really couldn’t be compared to the experience of actually, viscerally feeling it! The tingling, flowing sensation felt somewhat similar to the time Lan Zhan had been in hospital when he was younger, and had been put on an intravenous drip. But this sensation wasn’t present in his veins, it was happening throughout an entirely new network that this body apparently had.
The doctor shared a brief look of concern with Lan Xichen. Lan Zhan frowned minutely at being glanced around as if he wasn’t there. “Is there a problem?” he asked.
“Lan-er-gongzi has had a minor qi deviation,” the doctor said, addressing Lan Xichen. “But he seems to have somehow brought his own meridians back into the proper alignment.”
A qi deviation! In the setting of Proud Immortal Founder of the Demon Way, that was serious! It wasn’t something that could happen due to just a minor issue, it was a symptom of something being very badly wrong with a person’s cultivation. And qi deviations were often fatal.
Now that he was aware of their presence, Lan Zhan noticed that this body’s meridians felt somewhat fragile, almost bruised. He didn’t really have anything to compare it to, but surely they weren’t supposed to feel like that.
“You will have to take extra time each morning to meditate and circulate your qi until you are fully recovered,” said the doctor. “It would also be beneficial for us to check up on you in the future, and determine if there is some imbalance or blockage that could cause another qi deviation.”
“Of course, we will make sure to do that,” said Lan Xichen. He was now looking extremely pale and worried. “Wangji, it seems like it really was the right thing to do, to go meditate in the Cold Pond,” he added. “You may have averted a catastrophe.”
Although he maintained a stoic expression, internally Lan Zhan shuddered to hear this. Averted a catastrophe? More likely, the feverish Lan Wangji had overtaxed himself, and caused his own qi deviation in the first place! And now… now he was gone, and Lan Zhan was occupying his body. Lan Zhan didn’t know if the qi deviation had been deadly, or if it had simply caused enough of a weakness for something to force Lan Wangji’s soul out of its rightful position, and replaced it with that of a clueless transmigrator. Either way, the original inhabitant was gone.
Still, Lan Zhan refused to feel bad about it. Lan Wangji was a fictional character, why should Lan Zhan be upset if he died? He was going to die anyway, due to his own bad decisions. It had simply happened a little sooner. Now that Lan Zhan was in his place, he’d take care to do a better job of it.
“Thank you,” Lan Zhan said to the doctor. That wasn’t out of character, right? Lan Wangji was always polite to people in positions of power or influence. “I think I will go and meditate now.” And change out of this damp clothing. He rose from the bench, ignoring Lan Xichen’s anxious gaze, and prayed he could find the disciple dormitories without getting too obviously lost.
--
As the head disciple, and son of the clan leader, it made sense that Lan Wangji’s dormitory was one of the biggest, set slightly apart from the rest. Lan Xichen accompanied him there, and Lan Zhan was able to walk behind him without making it look too obviously like he was following him. Lan Xichen kept shooting little glances at him back over his shoulder, like he was afraid Lan Zhan was going to fall over and start gushing blood from his face or something.
“Wangji,” said Lan Xichen. “I know you’ve volunteered to patrol Cloud Recesses tonight, but I think you should reconsider. You should stay behind and rest.”
Lan Zhan was about to agree, when he was interrupted by a ding. [Lan Wangji patrolling Cloud Recesses is an important plot point for establishing his rivalry with the protagonist! If this plot point is missed, 200 B Points will be deducted!]
… Tell me again, how many B Points did I start with? Lan Zhan asked the system.
[You were awarded 100 complimentary B Points at the start of your user experience! As you have done basically nothing so far except follow the character Lan Xichen around, your number remains the same!]
And if I lose more B Points than what I have…
[Your account will be terminated, and you will be deported back to your original world.]
Back to my original world, where I’m dead. Great. So there was no chance of skipping this encounter with the protagonist, then.
“I will consider it,” Lan Zhan told Lan Xichen, meaning I am absolutely still going on patrol tonight, I haven’t got any choice.
But just because he still had to show up for the encounter, didn’t mean Lan Zhan had to act the same way. In the novel, Lan Wangji had scolded the protagonist for breaking curfew and drinking. He’d drawn his sword on him, broken the protagonist’s bottle of Emperor’s Smile, and reported his rule breaking to Master Lan Qiren. There was definitely some sort of compromise Lan Zhan could make, where he could still be in character but maybe let the protagonist off with a lighter punishment.
This reminded Lan Zhan of something else important. Before entering his dormitory room, Lan Zhan turned back towards Lan Xichen. “If you have the opportunity, you should send somebody to the main gate. The Jiang disciples misplaced their invitation.”
There! That shouldn’t be out of character, right? He’d just ratted the Jiangs out to an authority over their missing invitation. Knowing Lan Xichen, he would ensure the Jiang disciples were brought inside regardless, which was what Lan Zhan wanted, but he hadn’t actually asked Lan Xichen to do that.
[... 5 B Points deducted for clumsy loophole exploitation] said the System. Its mechanical voice sounded somehow exasperated. Well. That wasn’t too harsh a penalty.
“Of course! I’ll have it seen to,” said Lan Xichen. “In the meantime, take care of yourself.” Lan Xichen beamed at Lan Zhan, before leaving him in peace.
As Lan Zhan pushed open the door to the dormitory, the jade token attached to his belt gave a little flare of spiritual energy. Was it like some sort of keycard? Only people with the right level of permission could get into certain buildings in the Cloud Recesses? That was another element of worldbuilding that wasn’t in the novel! He wondered if there were any rooms he couldn’t enter, and what would happen if he tried.
Lan Wangji’s dormitory honestly looked quite acceptable, by Lan Zhan’s standards. It was almost uncomfortably sparse and tidy, much like Lan Zhan’s old bedroom had been. There were many books, carefully lined up on the shelves, and neatly stacked writing materials on a table, beside a cloth-covered guqin. The only hint of individuality was a tiny vase sitting by a window, containing a single purple-blue gentian flower.
Who could have guessed, one-dimensional villain Lan Wangji apparently liked flowers? Or maybe it had been put there by someone else. Soft-hearted Lan Xichen seemed like a likely culprit. Lan Zhan supposed it was up to him now, to decide for himself whether Lan Wangji liked flowers or not.
Ding! [Now you’re getting it! Good luck on your mission of adding sympathetic nuance to this scum villain, and improving this story’s many failings!]
Let’s not go too far. Lan Zhan wasn’t interested in being sympathetic, much less in improving the story now that he was living it rather than reading it. He just wanted to stay out of the protagonist’s way, thereby avoiding his own death. If he could read some interesting books and learn how to cultivate, maybe continue improving his guqin playing, that would be enough for him.
Of more immediate interest was the small mirror attached to one wall. On a shelf underneath it was a hairbrush, and a small jar of some sort. Lan Zhan immediately headed over there, to get a look at his new face.
It was… actually quite handsome! Just as expected in a cultivation setting. Lan Wangji had smooth skin, attractive features, and dark, piercing eyes. But wasn’t he a little bit too good looking? Pathetic minor villains shouldn’t be overly handsome, they would outshine the protagonist.
And anyway, weren’t he and Lan Xichen supposed to look alike? They had a somewhat similar bearing, that of an elegant and refined young master, although Lan Xichen had a friendlier look about him. But where Lan Xichen had broader shoulders and a square jaw, Lan Zhan’s new face was somewhat narrower and pointier. Still, he couldn’t complain. He thought this face rather suited him.
He forced a smile at the mirror, just to see what it would look like, then twisted his face up in a look of sadness and regret.
“Wei-gongzi, I apologise for my earlier actions,” he tried. That neither looked nor sounded appropriate for this character. And wasn’t it too dishonest to apologise for something he hadn’t even done? From the protagonist’s perspective he would still be that person who refused them entry, but to Lan Zhan, it didn’t feel right. Anyway, hadn’t he thought to himself that if he’d been in that position, he’d have done the same? If you carelessly leave behind your possessions, there should be consequences.
With or without the OOC function enabled, I can’t just go around lying about things. I don’t want to give the protagonist cause to kill me, but I don’t want to shamelessly pander to him either.
Having made up his mind on this matter, Lan Zhan got changed into another, nearly identical set of white-and-pale-blue robes. He also found his sword, which was a relief, as he’d been somewhat concerned he might have dropped it in the Cold Pond.
It wasn’t quite dark yet, but Lan Zhan didn’t want to miss the protagonist’s arrival. Not to mention, he thought he might have to search around to find the location where they would meet. So with this in mind, he set off early to find the perfect rooftop.
--
After spending a little while strolling through Cloud Recesses at a measured and dignified pace, Lan Zhan thought of a problem. He knew from the description in Proud Immortal Founder of the Demon Way that Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian would confront each other on the roof of an outlying building. But he wasn’t actually sure how to get up on the roof in the first place. In cultivation settings, characters seemed to jump great heights and fly through the air like it was nothing. But Lan Zhan wasn’t actually a cultivator, he was only pretending to be one! He had no idea how to do any of that!
Could he just find a likely looking spot, and clamber up onto the roof the regular way? He might have to. And what would happen when it came time for him to draw his sword on the protagonist? Lan Wangji had been quite athletic in his previous life, but none of the sports he’d ever done involved swordfighting.
Forget deliberately breaking character, he might accidentally reveal himself as a fake whether he wanted to or not!
Lan Zhan frowned, and glanced around. He was in a quiet, secluded courtyard, and there was no one else out here. So no one would see him if he just…
He gave a little jump in place, and immediately felt rather foolish. Nobody is watching! He reminded himself. Your life might depend on this!
He tried again, this time reaching for the places where he’d felt that weird, tingly sensation when the doctor had been probing his spiritual pathways. There were several major channels of them, flowing throughout his limbs, forming little whirlpools of energy at certain points, and all flowing towards-- or possibly out from?-- some sort of central point deep within his body. If he jumped this time, while using this pool of energy to give himself a little push…
Lan Zhan went rocketing up into the cool night air. High above the rooftops, he felt his robes flare out dramatically around him as he hung there for a second, and then began to plummet back to earth. He had just enough time for a brief flare of wordless panic, before he grasped wildly for his qi again and somehow managed to slow his fall.
Hm. Maybe a bit more gently. This time, the qi-assisted boost he gave himself was just enough to get him to roof height, and then hover there momentarily, before he allowed himself to descend back to the ground.
Lan Zhan felt a quiet burst of delight. He was actually doing it, he was cultivating! It had felt quite natural to do it, almost instinctive, like his body had built up quite a respectable level of cultivation, and was used to reaching for it regularly. He was sure if he’d had to start from scratch, it would have been a lot harder, but this body already had a fully formed golden core and everything!
He remembered the assertion in Proud Immortal Founder of the Demon Way, that Lan Wangji had been jealous of the protagonist’s prodigious cultivation, and had wanted to sabotage him. But to Lan Zhan, that seemed ridiculous. As a newcomer to this world, there was no way he could manage to be the strongest or most talented cultivator, not without some practice. But to be able to cultivate at all was incredible.
In his previous life, Lan Zhan couldn’t precisely be called competitive. But rather, he’d known what he was good at, and strived to become even better. He didn’t worry about what other people were doing, the only standards that mattered were his own, and those of his uncle. In this life, he thought it would be much the same. He wanted to be good at cultivation, because it seemed like a worthwhile thing to work towards. But there was no point in trying to impede other people’s progress simply to make himself look better. In the end, he didn’t care how he looked to other people. He’d still know whether he was actually succeeding or not.
With this in mind, Lan Zhan practiced a few more jumps in the privacy of the empty courtyard. He managed to do some flips in mid-air, and didn’t even seem to get dizzy from it. Then he decided it was probably time to be moving on. It was nearly fully dark, and he didn’t want to be late for his meeting with the protagonist.
--
With the System’s help, Lan Zhan soon found the spot he needed to be in. There was a sort of upper balcony on one building, which gave a pretty good view out over the Cloud Recesses. Given that the Lan sect were all very well-behaved and went to bed early, and there were supposed to be wards preventing people from entering the area outside of curfew, Lan Zhan was not entirely sure what kind of wrongdoing he was expected to find on his patrol. If he didn’t already know the protagonist was going to attempt to sneak in after hours, he was sure he’d probably find the whole exercise pretty pointless. As it was, he simply stood on the balcony for a while, and watched clouds pass over the face of the moon. He also took a moment to smooth down his hair after his earlier acrobatics, and make sure his forehead ribbon was on straight.
He was alerted to the protagonist’s presence by the sound of a grunt as someone hoisted their body over the ridge of a roof, then the gentle clinking of ceramic jars, and a muffled giggle.
And there… there was the protagonist, Wei Wuxian. Right there in the flesh. He wasn’t looking in Lan Zhan’s direction, but rather gazing out over the courtyard below. He was maybe a little shorter than Lan Zhan had pictured him, and he looked very young, but his mischievous expression was exactly as expected.
Of course he looks young, he’s still a teenager like me at this point, thought Lan Zhan. Wait, is he even old enough to be buying alcohol? Lan Zhan knew some kids whose parents were fine with them drinking, but his uncle would have grounded him until he was thirty for trying to sneak alcohol into the house. Much less into somebody else’s house! That was just rude.
The protagonist jumped in surprise when he spotted Lan Zhan’s impassive figure on the balcony. “What a coincidence! We meet again!”
Lan Zhan was in no way prepared to actually be spoken to by the protagonist, and simply stared at him.
“Lan-er-gongzi, you’re out at this hour!” Wei Wuxian tried again. “Are you going to admire the moon?”
As a matter of fact, he had been doing exactly that, but he couldn’t just say that. He would be docked some points for breaking character for sure.
“Lan-er-gongzi,” said the protagonist, persistent in the face of adversity, “I came for my shijie. Oh! I found the invitation! It’s right here, I’ll show you.” He began to rummage inside his robes, presumably for said invitation. This confirmed Lan Zhan’s earlier suspicions that he had indeed met with the Jiang disciples earlier.
“Breaking through the wards is a violation of the Lan clan’s principles,” he said. He had to say something, and this was roughly what he remembered the rules-obsessed Lan Wangji having said. Really, that was a pretty mild rebuke, considering that Wei Wuxian had essentially just done the magical equivalent of throwing a rock through the Lan sect’s window. “Those who come at night should not be allowed in until the morning. Two violations of the Lan Clan’s principles. Unauthorised carrying of liquor. Three violations of the Lan Clan’s principles.”
The protagonist did not look thrilled by this stony reception. “Lan-er-gongzi, I am new to the Gusu Lan Clan, and not familiar with the rules. But I swear, these things won’t happen again!” As he said this, he held up three fingers in an earnest salute. Of course, having read the original novel, Lan Zhan knew he absolutely didn’t mean it. “Also, I was just in a hurry to find Jiang Cheng and shijie.” A calculating look stole over his face. “How about this? Just let me in for a glimpse. Just one glimpse!”
Seeming to consider the matter settled, the protagonist got to his feet. Acting purely on instinct, Lan Zhan vaulted over the edge of the balcony, and thrust his sword out to block the protagonist’s path. It slid a short way out of the scabbard, revealing a length of shining blade. The protagonist gave a nervous laugh.
“Well then, the Emperor’s Smile, I will spare you one pot,” he said, holding up one of the ceramic jars that were looped over the end of his sword. “Forget about this, deal?”
[That’s bribery!] the System sang out helpfully. [That is also a violation of the Lan clan’s rules!]
This actually… genuinely annoyed Lan Zhan! He may not have agreed with all of the original Lan Wangji’s actions or motivations, but the rules were the rules, and Wei Wuxian had broken them. But instead of apologising for his ignorance, he’d assumed Lan Zhan was so weak willed and dishonourable that he could be persuaded to reverse his decision with a jar of alcohol! “Attempting to bribe a law enforcer,” Lan Zhan snapped. “Doubly guilty.” Law enforcer, maybe he was taking himself a bit too seriously, but breaking the rules was a pretty serious matter.
“Lan-er-gongzi, are you seriously so inflexible?” the protagonist complained. “When we were at the gate, you put the silence spell on me for no reason! You are somehow responsible for that case, right?” saying this, he pushed Lan Zhan’s sword back into its scabbard, and attempted to leave again.
Lan Zhan didn’t need the System to tell him that he could not let the protagonist just run off like that. He thrust out his sword in much the same way as before-- and then found himself twisting back from Wei Wuxian’s block, and coming around for another strike. Before Lan Zhan could really comprehend what was happening, they were fighting, actually fighting! Wei Wuxian was blocking and ducking under his slashes, then tumbling up and out of the way.
Lan Zhan remembered how to jump, of course. And he remembered how to use his qi to keep that momentum up, as he soared through the air after Wei Wuxian’s graceful, fleeing figure. They faced each other from opposite sides of the roof, as Wei Wuxian eyed him consideringly. Lan Zhan couldn’t help but wonder what he saw.
“I’m occupied today. Excuse me,” the protagonist said. His perfect veneer of audacity hadn’t been so much as chipped by their fight. He turned and fled once more, and once more Lan Zhan gave chase. They clashed again, and this time Lan Zhan actually managed to sever the cord connecting the two jars of Emperor’s Smile. The protagonist dived off the roof to catch them, but he missed one, and it shattered on the white gravel path below.
“Lan Wangji!” the protagonist called out, all pretense at politeness abandoned. “Pay for my Emperor’s Smile!”
Lan Zhan leapt down from the roof after him. He was glad now he’d gotten in a bit of practice earlier, as he now managed to make a perfectly elegant landing. Composing his face into a stern glare, he stared the protagonist down. As he did so, he noticed something he hadn’t seen earlier.
“Turn around,” he ordered.
“Ah? What’s this?” said Wei Wuxian, walking over to study it more closely.
It was a large block of stone, with column upon column of writing carved into it. These were of course the famous rules of the Gusu Lan sect. Lan Zhan realised he’d better take a look over them himself, at some point, if he was going to be trying to enforce them.
“The principles of the Gusu Lan Clan,” Lan Zhan answered.
The protagonist was astonished. “This many?” he said, sounding horrified. He clutched his remaining jar of Emperor’s Smile protectively to his chest.
“Put the alcohol down,” said Lan Zhan. “Since you came for the lecture, let’s count how many principles you have violated tonight.” He paused. He knew there were at least four by now. Wasn’t there some rule about not fighting, too? But that probably didn’t count, since Lan Zhan had actually started the fight! Oh no, had he just added “hypocrite” to the list of scum villain Lan Wangji’s numerous misdeeds?
The protagonist shook his head and scoffed. “Well, I’m so fortunate that I wasn’t born into the stiff and horrible Gusu Lan Clan.” With that, he took the opportunity to run off again, leaping over to a nearby roof. He then sat down in a most inelegant manner. “Liquor is forbidden in the Cloud Recesses. Well, I can stay outside and sit here to drink! This won’t count, right?” Saying this, he unstoppered his jar, and tipped a stream of clear, fragrant liquor into his mouth.
Lan Zhan was infuriated. Now he knew how the System had felt earlier, when he’d tried to argue technicalities with it! The protagonist’s behaviour had seemed amusing as a reader, but from this position, Lan Zhan was beginning to find him impossibly smug and arrogant! Who would make such a big deal about not being permitted to drink alcohol? Just apologise and follow the rules next time!
“So disobedient!” Lan Zhan snapped. He felt his hand, held behind his back, clench into a fist.
“The female cultivators in every clan are all admiring the famous Lan-er-gongzi!” the protagonist called down from the roof. The return to Lan Zhan’s title was clearly not meant to be a gesture of respect. “What a pity!”
“A pity?” Lan Zhan found himself baffled by these words, and also distracted by a single drop of Emperor’s Smile that had beaded on Wei Wuxian’s chin. What on earth did he mean, about the female cultivators admiring Lan Wangji? That hadn’t been in the original novel!
Wei Wuxian grinned. “What a pity that they don’t know the person they are admiring is relentless, unreasonable, and rigid!”
Lan Zhan glared. Well, he wasn’t wrong, Lan Wangji certainly was all those things. And maybe Lan Zhan was too! But that was better than being a shameless, disrespectful, irresponsible rule breaker, who tipped illicit alcohol all over his chin!
Ding! went the System. [Would you like to spend 50 B Points to unlock the Lan sect special ability, “Silencing Spell”?]
Yes! Anything to shut this smug protagonist up! Lan Zhan was accepting the offer before he’d even thought it through, or considered the fact that the cost was over half his remaining B Points.
“But it doesn’t matter,” Wei Wuxian continued, like he was giving a speech to a greater audience than just one mad and frustrated teenager glaring up at him from the ground. “When I go back to Yunmeng, I’m going to--”
His words were suddenly cut off, and his lips appeared inseparably sealed together! Lan Zhan had cast the silencing spell!
Wei Wuxian leapt back down from the roof, and got up in Lan Zhan’s personal space. He was able to make inarticulate noises of protest, though it appeared somewhat painful to do so, but he could neither continue with his speech nor drink any more of his Emperor’s Smile.
Lan Zhan had won. This fact was suddenly more important to him than the story, or his original plan not to get on the protagonist’s bad side. He’d made his point, and now he was going to take Wei Wuxian to receive the proper punishment.
[Congratulations! Achievement “Youthful Rivalry” unlocked! 200 B Points awarded!]
“Let’s go,” Lan Zhan said, turning on his heel to walk off. The protagonist, inexplicably, followed him.
