(A Spider-Man original storyline, featuring @dragvnsovl)

ACT I

Earth-1048: Chinatown District, New York - Near F.E.A.S.T...

Perched upon a rooftop near the F.E.A.S.T shelter, the younger Spider-Man of this New York had managed to distance himself from the crowd on the sidewalk below; their chatter somewhat confusing and bewildering Miles Morales, as what was being said... Just didn't quite add up. Moreover, what it all could mean for himself, and his mentor elsewhere was a perfectly justifiable reason to call said mentor and tutor, even if he was part of something bigger now, and entrusted Miles to take care of the city in his stead... Right? Totally!

"Yo, Pete! I know you're like... Super busy and all, but... U-Uh... I'm hearin' some pretty freaky stuff near F.E.A.S.T, and it might be more than a Spider-Man problem..."

Knowing that Peter wasn't too busy to at least answer a phone call, especially since he said it was still okay to call him for advice once in awhile, whenever Miles got that part of things out of the way, he'd tell the OG Spider-Man what was going on.

Earth-928: Nueva York - Spider Society HQ

Taking a quick breather from helping out Miguel with keeping things under control, so that the future Spider-Man of 2099 could take it just a bit easier since they began their shared endeavor, Peter Parker of Earth-1048 felt his phone buzzing; bringing the screen into view, to see who exactly was trying to contact him. Once he saw that it was his successor and fellow Webhead, Miles, the red and blue clad Webslinger would swipe to answer the incoming call; a jovial tone initially put in his words, to greet his pupil.

"Hey, Miles! What's-" Right off the bat, Miles's tone and rush into why he called had the Queens-born Wall Crawler silencing himself; furrowing his brow as he listened to what the other had to say. 'More than a Spider-Man problem', he'd thought to himself, before the undisclosed details seemed to leave Peter speechless for a moment or two, before he snapped out of his disbelief. "Y-Yeah, Miles! I'll be on my way there in just a sec. Stay calm, and tell MJ to get a hold of Gloria. Maybe we can figure out when this all started. See you soon." Somber in tone, a near-vacant stare and slack jaw were parts of the face Peter now wore, as he ended the quick phone call with the Harlem-born Spider-Man; putting his breather to an end rather early, and turning back around to find Miguel... Urgently.

Once he did so...

"Miguel... Something's going on back home, that Miles just called me about. I know that I promised that he could handle things, and that we'd handle this stuff together, and I'd be right here to take some of the weight off your shoulders but..." A fist clenched, as his breathing became a touch more frantic; unease, heartache and confusion, above all else, laid heavy in his inflection. "Something's wrong, and I need to get to the bottom of it. I'll be back as soon as I can... Promise."

He would only wait long enough to hear what Miguel had to say over the matter, even if it was reprimanding or comforting; Peter's mind being made up from the moment he got further details from Miles Morales, just moments ago. Whenever Miguel would finish speaking, it was likely that Peter wouldn't have anything else to say; probably, then, turning away to use his wrist gadget to open one of those portals to his home: Earth-1048. Still, it would take him a few moments to configure the contraption, since he was in a hurried and stressed state of mind.

You missed the opportunity to mention the most obvious moment. When they talked under the rooftop of the Williamsburg Bank building, he started taking the opportunity to tell her how he felt (by reaching for her hand). She noticed... and swallowed her feelings before warning him about her presumed fate.

I know that damn look. 😭

¿Peter was Gwen's first love?

This is something I've been seeing or hinting at very recently because of certain things Gwen says in ATSV that are actually misconstrued, so I wanted to go a little deeper into this topic to see if Peter was really Gwen's first love:

As everyone knows, Gwen and Peter were childhood friends until he, to being someone weak who wanted to be special just like Gwen, turns into the lizard and dies because of it. Something that is made quite clear is the fact that Peter was clearly in love with Gwen but, did she feel the same?

During the flashbacks, one can see how the two of them seem to have a genuine friendship and there actually seems to be no sign of Gwen's romantic relationship with Peter... yet

Although it is presumed that they could have gone to the high school dance as a date, I don't think so since they could easily have gone as friends and that's it.

She always makes it very clear that he was his childhood best friend, and nothing more.

The only real clue that Gwen may have liked her friend deep down is this little scene where Gwen, after Peter's death, sees a couple holding arms and she gets upset about it.

Taking all this into account, the most logical thing is that she started to like Peter just before he died and that's where the thing stayed, it never progressed, it never evolved, nothing. It's like an uncomfortable backpack you wear on your back when you meet your soulmate.

That this would explain her unstable and impulsive personality during ITSV and the ATSV prologue that she ended up changing thanks to Miles.

Adding to which, thanks to Miles, during that time in the Spider-Society, Gwen has not only drastically improved and progressed, but she can truly get over Peter's death.

However, here is something that caused some doubt, and that is that in the ATSV prologue she mentions that, before she met Miles on Earth-1610, there was Peter, however, taking into account that at that time she was not really honest with her feelings, she was surely referring to the weight that both had in her life at that point in the story, since if we talk about friendship itself, it would make sense for Gwen to say that, but if we talk romantically, things change completely.

"Ok but Gwen refers to Miles as the first friend she's made since Peter died" Yes, it's true, but because it was Miles who wanted them to remain friends at the end of ITSV and she respected his decision, however, inside, they already liked each other since they met for the first time, and Gwen fell in love with Miles by the end of the first movie, she didn't say anything at her farewell to ITSV, so Gwen never saw Miles as a friend, she always saw him like something much more than that from the beginning, and that's the big difference from Peter. And as a plus, she never said anything about being in love with Peter or anything like that.

Let's also remember that Gwen tries to hide her feelings in the same way that Miles does too so this should not be a surprise to anyone at this point.

We also know that Gwen refers to Miles as her "Friend" as a curtain, contradicting herself at times because she basically doesn't think things through before she says them or also wants to go unnoticed.

More importantly, the fact that Gwen is head over heels in love with Miles and loves him so much more than he loves her, which is insane in itself, should automatically rule out any possibility of the Peter thing having any comparison, romantically speaking.

And I know that some may disagree with this, but the truth is that one can love one person much more than another and there is nothing wrong with that.

And one can also realize this when there are thousands of different Peters in the Spider-Society but she's obsessed with Miles, talking about him all that time she was there.

There are other clues to that, too, like when Gwen and Miles are eating on the terrace and she's surprised to realize that romantic feelings make her hungry, as if this was the first time something like this had happened to her.

Or how affectionate, cuddly, flirtatious and playful that she is with Miles.

Also, the creators made it clear that Beyond The Spider-Verse will have the most satisfying conclusion to the romance between Gwen and Miles, and I can't think of a more satisfying conclusion to the relationship between Gwen and Miles than leaving that message that those little feelings that she may have developed for her dead friend would be nothing compared to what would come her way after that, and her telling Miles that he is the love of her life, being Miles the person who changed her life forever, would be the perfect climax.

In conclusion, while Gwen began to see Peter as more than just her friend shortly before he died, that's basically incomparable to all the love, care, and adoration she has for Miles, and it's grown considerably ever since the ITSV ending until the ATSV ending where, if Miles was truly in love with Gwen, she's Triple as madly in love with her soulmate. So it actually couldn't be said that Peter was Gwen's first love.

Much like Earth 42! Miles, he’s quite a simple guy when it comes to spending free time with you. Drawing you, taking you swinging, and tickling or play fight with you are some of his favorites.

Tickling or play fighting always leads to kisses and cuddling, so.

Beauty - What do they admire about their s/o? What do they think is beautiful about them?

Y’all know how writers talk about a character getting lost in someone’s eyes? Yeah, that’s Miles. No matter the color, he’s gonna stare into them. This boy never breaks eyes contact.

But Miles also appreciates every moment that allows him to relish in his youth, the fact that he’s a kid. He’s still young, no matter how gruesome his spider duties get. Every cheesy joke, every humiliating attempt at flirting? He lives for it. It’s there to remind him that he’s still learning, and that it’s more than okay.

Cuddling - how do they like to cuddle?

With his entire weight on top of you. His face buried in your neck or clothes, your hand scratching at the nape of his neck, his limbs thrown around loosely. It’s so calming for him to just try and melt into you.

But say you don’t like that? Too close, maybe? He also loves what I think is called the honeymoon hug?? Like when you’re just hugging each other? That too, he loves that.

Date - What was the first date with them like? What is their go-to date? What is their dream date?

It was unoriginal, to say the least. He took you to a movie or something like that. Then you both just kind of walked around New York, talking about anything that came to mind. You walked right next to each other and he would “accidentally” bump into you. The people on the street who knew him could tell he was head over heels.

Equal - Are they the dominant one in the relationship, or rather passive?

It changes depending on the day. He’s much more open about feelings than his Earth 42 counterpart. Some days he’s rearing and ready to go, quick to do it all. Other days, not so much.

It’s refreshing, you guys aren’t always stuck with the same typical dynamic.

Flight - Would they be easy to forgive their s/o? How are they fighting?

Miles is a firm believer in not going to bed angry at each other. No matter how long it takes, he’s going to tell you how he feels and he’s gonna make sure that it gets solved.

He’s a good listener. So if you tell him how you feel, explain yourself? Come to a consensus? He’s gonna forgive you and give you a big fat kiss.

Miles fights openly, and loudly. He’s got big emotions and a lot of energy. He yells, but not really at you. His volume just increases when there’s a lot going on.

Gratitude - How grateful are they in general? Are they aware of what their s/o is doing for them?

Not at first, honestly. Of course he was happy, but it didn’t really phase him.

But when Miles will come home to find you just randomly sitting on his bed? Or when he sees you in his clothes? Or when you’re happy and giggly when he makes stupid jokes? He sits there and he realizes just how lucky he is.

Honesty - Do they have secrets they hide from their s/o? Or do they share everything?

Miles doesn’t have secrets, but that’s because he’s a bad liar. I don’t think he would hide anything, but if he tried to he would fail. When he lies he gets nervous and he sweats..it’s cute.

Inspiration - Did their s/o change them somehow, or the other way around?

Both, simultaneously.

He’s like a ball of sunshine. Warm and refreshing and so good at making you happy. It’s like he takes away any and all discomfort from your life when you’re with him.

But Miles is a fool in love. Like I said, you bring a sense of youth to him that he really needed. You make him feel as young as he is, awkward adorable with each other.

Jealousy - Do they get jealous easily? How do they deal with it?

Yeah…he does. Like if sees someone being friendlier than he’d like them to be? Instant jealousy. Why aren’t you talking to him instead?

Miles is gonna pout and stare at you. Then he’s gonna cling to you like a needy puppy in need of holding. And he’s gonna ask for kisses, and how could you say no?

Kiss - What was the first kiss like?

It was the funniest thing ever

He got nervous and head butted you. He then continued to sulk at his failed attempt before trying again, carefully this time.

His hands were sweating. It was quick and awkward (at least on his part) and he basically almost blew up.

Love Confession - How would they confess to their s/o?

He comes up with this whole plan, right? He has everything prepared so he could tell you in the best way possible? Then he fucks up the plan.

The second it becomes time, he starts rambling. He recaps how you met, how got to know each other, how you made him feel during those time, and then he told you how he felt. It was hilariously because he was talking with his hands and flailing them around.

Marriage - Do they want to get married? How do they propose?

Miles was ready for marriage the minute you kissed for the first time.

The kind of guy to take you out to a fancy dinner and propose in front of everyone. Part of that’s because he wants the whole world to know he’s in love with you. He also wanted the dessert.

Nicknames - What do they call their s/o?

The second he caught feelings, it was obvious. He was drawing you 25/8, in just about every page of his sketchbook.

Any day that he got to see you was a good day. Those were the days that made his mother catch on, because he’d be extra quick to give his parents affection before running off as fast as possible.

PDA - Are they upfront about their relationship? Do they brag about their s/o in front of others? Or are they rather shy to kiss etc. when others are watching?

The second you tell him it’s okay to kiss you in public, he pecking you on the lips.

He’ll talk about you all the time, always finding a way to bring you into a conversation. At school, if you guys went to the same school, he’d stand in front of your locker and ask about how your morning was going. Then he’d walk you to your first class and give you a kiss before he either leaves or goes to his seat.

He’s open about his love for you, and the majority of people find it cute. Like he’s so in love it’s almost sickening.

You can’t sit here and tell me that Miles wouldn’t throw up some art dedicated to you.

Imagine it: It’s in his signature style, a mix of all your favorite colors with hearts. Or maybe it’s you, or your silhouette. And in very big, very noticeable letters it says “MI VIDA,” because you make his life better just by being there.

This goes back to the last one.

Large bouquets, art dedicated to you…Miles is a romantic. He’s gonna make big, showy, and probably awkward gifts of affection because that’s what he does. His love for you is big. He always has you in mind.

Every step of the way. He’s gonna listen to you talk about it, no matter what it is. He’s gonna make sure he understands exactly what it is you’re doing. Miles lives for energy and excitement. Anything that gets you excited, will get him excited. He’ll keep you on your toes and, honestly, will never stop surprising you.

Miles, despite his very awkward tendencies, is good with handling your emotions.

The best thing about Miles is that he knows feelings are inevitable. So he doesn’t try to make it stop. He understands, and encourages you to react how you see fit. Whatever will make it better.

You need to cry? He’ll hold you. You need to scream? Yell at him, it’s okay. You want to sleep? He’ll cuddle you.

He just knows what’s going through your head and why. He knows you, he really does.

Much like Earth 42! Miles, he isn’t too concerned with it.

Like, he obviously wants to look good for you. But he doesn’t obsess over it. There are more important things in the world than looking in a mirror constantly, 24/7.

Miles would make space in his dresser for your clothes.

If you’re at his house a lot? In his room? Any item of clothing you may leave there will end up right there in the drawer. From a hoodie to a t-shirt. It wouldn’t surprise me if you decided to just change out of your own clothes for his because they’re so comfy and they smell so good.

Or if you don’t leave clothes there, but Instead something else? A bracelet? A book?

He’s keeping it safe on his desk and sending you a text, letting you know it was there. Then he just had an excuse to see you.

He loves hand holding. Like a lot.

Synopsis: What would our lovely boy Miles be like as a grown up college student? Does he change or does he still keep his dorky, boyish demeanor?

A/N: HAPPY JUNETEENTH TO MY FELLOW NEGROS!!! In honor of Juneteenth and the release of ATSV, I'm dumping some headanons on yall, and I'm so proud of how these turned out. I was talking with my friend how we heavily believed that we would see a grown up Miles but when we found out only a year passed in Miles’ timeline for him, the topic of college!Miles came up. So these headcanons are pretty much a product of how we thought miles would be as a college student around our age.

Note: the first pic is of Shameik Moore, I just used a cartoon filter over it to try and make it look like the art style in the spiderverse franchise. The third one is not Shameik Moore but I use the same cartoon filter over it for the same effect

College!Miles isn’t a complete one-eighty of his mid-teen self, but rather, he builds on the defining attributes of his youth and matures them. He’s still pretty self-effacing, modest and humble, but he’s more confident in himself and the man he wants to become. He’s selfless and courageous and loving to a fault, and anyone who’s anyone who has been in his presence can say that Miles is a great person all around.

College!Miles ends up going to study in New Jersey, majoring in Physics Engineering, but also minoring in African Psychology on the track for social work. He knows that he can only do so much good behind his Spiderman mask, and believes that he should also be putting in the work when he isn’t wearing it. It’s an obligation for him to put his best food forward for his community and his people.

College!Miles who mixes his style with 90’s black streetwear and modern day. He’s a sneakerhead, so his dorm room gradually accumulates with boxes upon boxes of shoes damn near reaching the ceiling. His room back home is much worse though (Rio can’t even clean his room anymore because everywhere she looks, it’s a box of shoes chucked somewhere. Mama has given up lmao). And similar to the first outfit we see him in in ATSV, he loves the sports-jersey-over-solid-color-shirt combo, but has a decent amount of hoodies and tee’s both graphic and plain, that he likes to throw on with a pair of jeans and shoes. He knows how to dress, and he knows that he looks good in what he wears too.

College!Miles who never steps out the house without a chain on. He’s got two specific ones that he wears primarily - a silver cuban link his parents got him for his eighteenth birthday that he wears daily, and a gold snake chain that he bought for himself with his first check from his first big boy job. There are other necklaces that he has that he’ll throw on it he wants to switch things up. He’s not a big fan of things on his wrist (he’s gotten too used to the web shooters that everything else just feels funny or wrong), but he has a watch that he only wears to be fancy and a couple of rings that go on his middle or forefingers. He also has a few pairs of studded earrings he switches between every now and then to keep up a fresh look.

College!Miles who starts to take special care in his appearance as he reaches his late teen years. He can only go to his mom when he’s on breaks or vacation when he travels back to Brooklyn, but he’s learned enough from Rio to do his own line-ups and touch ups to make him look decent. It took him a minute to get used to doing it on his own, but he was adamant on learning because he was firm on not letting anyone else into his head besides his mother. He’d recently gotten into cutting slits into his eyebrows too, as they make him feel super cool

College!Miles who knows he’s got girls & guys coming left and right waiting for the opportunity to get with him, but as much as he’s a loverboy, he’s also very intentional with how he moves and is very perceptive of people (his Spidey senses enhance it a lot more than what he wishes sometimes) that he peeps that a lot of them are only attracted to his looks. He doesn’t date for the first few semesters of college, and when his parents ask if he’s gonna bring someone home soon, he tells them that he’s too busy making gateways to dimensions to open the gateways to dating

College!Miles whose love for hip hop never dies over the years. Instead it seems to grow. He adds a few new artists to her playlist - JID, Young M.A., Tobe Nwigwe, & Kendrick Lamar from the hip hop and rap scenes (Miles uses many of Tobe’s songs as hype music to gas himself up). Though he’s also found an appreciation for other genres, like R&B and Neo-Soul. Some of these artists include but are not limited to: H.E.R., UMI, Ari Lennox, and Bryson Tiller.

College!Miles who still holds on to his art as a hobby and destresser from his many classes and double-identity. His street art follows him wherever he goes, tagging new places that have people wondering who the hell made it all the way up there to tag that. There’s a secret pride that swells in him when he sees passersby admiring the artwork.

College!Miles who, when the world gets too much and he feels like everythings going wrong, he climbs the tallest building he can find and just watches the sunrise or sunset. He lets the breathtaking view ease his mind and the warm sun soothe his worries away. Being so high up and away from people allows him to actually think about the troubles that plague him, so when he comes back down, he can address them accordingly

College!Miles who’s still very much a momma’s boy. He calls Rio almost every day, either to just talk or to rant about something silly. She’ll put him on speaker for Jefferson to hear and just looks at her husband like “Listen to your son” when he’s being silly. But it’s so sweet that Miles always has his parents on his mind when he’s away at school. He also calls his dad to have ‘guy talk’, which ain’t nothing but Miles and Jefferson either talking about sports, his academics (which Jeff is really supportive of, even if he doesn’t understand the physics part, he loves to hear his sons ideas on the psychology minor he’s taken on) or random funny shit the guys that they hang around do every day.

College!Miles who grows more confident in his Spanish and uses it more and more in his day-to-day life. He’ll speak it when he’s talking to himself, when he’s angry or if he’s hurt himself (which happens the same amount of times as it did when he was a teen), or he’ll try and surprise his mom with a conversation in complete Spanish (which he does succeed in sometimes).

College!Miles who’s barely changed from the loveable boy who we all know and love as a teen. He just grew some more and became cooler, but he still radiates the same dorky, intelligent, and loving energy he’s always had.

Standing on a rooftop, while overlooking part of New York, Miles thought that he'd found enough privacy, and caught enough of a break to take his mask off to catch some air. For a second, all was good, until...

The sound of a familiar voice struck his ears; calling the name of his deceased father. Immediately, his young mind defaulted to thinking that, somehow, his father somehow defied death; looking anywhere but at the source of who said his name. When that failed, though, the young Morales' gaze snapped to his mom... But... In a Spider-Woman suit?

"Uh... Mom? Are you... Okay?" Slowly putting his mask back on, out of sheer caution, since Peter warned him about the Spider Society, and even visited with him, Miles seemed a bit tense, despite his instincts telling him that this person meant him no harm.

"You're kind of making me nervous..." His voice would crack, though his words were honest. After all, she sounded just like his mother...

Y/n watched as miles approached the finger that looked scarily the similar their boyfriend. He just didn’t have braids and looked more…youthful? 

‘He looks so…pathetic’ y/n thought

They watched as the two look-alikes exchanged a “conversation” or whatever you can call it. Y/n could see how they contrast, Miles G looked more tired and just rugged. The other Miles looked tired too but much more hopeful in the eyes, like life was easy for him. 

y/n loathed that thought, ‘better life, wtf even is that’ 

“Your fathers still alive” G said with the distorted voice in his mask

‘He has a father?’ y/n thought. Quickly thinking back to how nice Mile’s father used to be, how much happiness and kindness he brought to the city. Now that he’s gone…the entire new york fel to ruin. 

“What?” the other miles raised a brow

“Your father” G said more sternly

“Yeah” 

“....oh” 

“ Who are you?” the other miles asked

The mask peeled itself off the figure's face, revealing to be G, your one and only. Miles' face showed terror and shock. 

“I’m Miles Morales, but YOU, you can call me the prowler” Mils G said, not showing much emotion given the situation he’s in. 

You got down from the pipe and walked up to them, not taking your eyes off of the “clone” version of your boyfriend. Your mask peeled off the same way G’s did, revealing your beautiful but tired face. 

You had seen the day Mr. Morales died, you almost died that day. Everything was going fine, everyone was gathered at the park for a cookout. Music, laughter, and smiles was the only thing you could see. Miles was smiling so widely, his laughter being contagious for you. All of it was so nice…til it wasn’t. Some f*ck head gangster decided that the cookout was a good place to test out his shooting abilities. 

Mr. Morales died a hero, he was trying to save you, you were the closest to him at the moment. Miles wasn’t nearby so he had to get someone to safety. You were already shot and losing blood, he had to do something. As he was trying to get  you to safety, he got shot in the process. You had already passed out from shock so you didn’t see it happen but it still stuck with you. 

You feel that you were the reason he got shot, you were the reason he died. Survivors guilt like a mf. Rio and Miles had reassured you that it wasn’t your fault, all of your friends and family reassured you that it wasn’t your fault. But you still can’t help but think it was. 

Y/n stood next to G, eyeing every little trait the clone had that was similar to Miles.

“Hmph…quite scrawny aint he” you joked, putting your arm on G’s shoulder and leaning on him. 

The clone Miles stared at you with sadness and disbelief, it was you, but it wasn’t. His y/n was always cheerful and happy, always with a smile on their face. His y/n died, y/n died trying to save him from kingpin. The y/n he was looking at looked as if they’ve seen better days, there was no hope in this y/n’s eyes, no joy or anything. But this y/n was alive, this y/n is breathing and looking STRAIGHT into his eyes. 

“...y/n?” Miles choked out, with a tear strolling down his eyes. 

“Damn…I must’ve died in his world by the way he lookin’ at me” You said, softly laughing a bit. 

“It’s…you” 

“Yeah it’s me tch…and?” you said with a smirk

Miles took a second to gather his thoughts, you weren’t his y/n. This “conversation” clearly showed that. He had to go, maybe he pleaded more and reached some caring and innocent part of you and G. 

“Please….you have to let me go” 

You and Miles activated your metal claws and put both of them on the sides of his head. Nearly moving in sync. 

“Why would I do that” you both say, looking Miles in the eye with an almost emotionless face.

You were not letting him go

If there’s anything Milo Morales hates, it’s spiders. So when a certain mask-wearing idiot crashes through the window of the room that he shares with his brother, he knows he’s fucked. 

When Milo gets home from school, his twin is nowhere to be found. He’d expected it, but that doesn’t mean he has to like it. 

Milo would cover for his brother in a heartbeat, but having to explain to his parents why they hadn’t come home together— having to lie to them at all — well, Miles better have a phenomenal reason to be out on this particular Friday night. 

Something about his brother has been off the past few days. Since the death of Spider-Man hit the news, Miles was more anxious than usual. He was hard to reach, and never where he was supposed to be. Milo can only give so many excuses to their teachers, and classmates-- to their parents before they all start to catch on. 

But worse, Milo didn’t know there were secrets they couldn’t share with each other. 

He thought they told each other everything, that no matter what happened— what either of them said or did — they would have each other's backs. 

Nothing was supposed to come between them. 

So what had?

Milo punches his pillow, getting the lumps out before he buries his face in the purple sheets. 

Seriously, his brother better have the hottest date in the world. That would be the only explanation Milo would accept, but that theory also relies on his twin having any sort of game— so Milo is really out of ideas. 

He reaches for his headphones, cranking the volume and squeezing his eyes shut as if the action alone could stop his thoughts from racing. 

Milo barely hears the tapping. 

It’s light at first— a gentle rapping against the glass window — easily mistaken for the raindrops. But it gets more urgent, insistent– annoyingly offbeat with the music from in his headphones to the point where it's nearly unbearable. 

Milo pulls them off his head and sits up, squinting at the window through the darkness. 

For a while, he doesn’t see anything. Just the rain splattering against the glass. But his heart is pounding, the hair on his arms is raised.

He knows something is wrong even if he can’t see it.

The window creaks. Fingers slide underneath. 

Milo’s hands find the baseball bat he keeps by his bed just as the window starts to slowly open. Slowly. Slowly.

There’s a sharp CRACK of thunder followed by a flash of lightning that illuminates the silhouette of a figure– a person– crawling through the window.

On all fours. 

The scream leaves Milo’s mouth just as his brother removes his mask.

Their father is at the door in seconds– nearly breaking it off its hinges as he throws it open– only to find his one of his sons lounging nonchalantly on his bed. 

Milo blinks up at him.

“Oh, sorry dad. Did you hear that? I was just watching a scary movie. CGI is really crazy these days.” He lets out the start of a laugh, but stops when he sees his father’s eye twitch.

“A scary movie?” Jefferson asks in disbelief, “In a thunderstorm?” He’s not really talking to Milo. He's already walking away– shaking his head and muttering about ‘the youth,’ and ‘losing his damn mind.’

Milo will apologize again later.

For now, he jumps up, shuts the bedroom door, and flicks on the light switch – looking up at the corner of the ceiling where his twin is perched.

Milo doesn’t even know where to begin. His brother is dripping wet from the rain, wearing what looks like a child’s Spider-Man costume, clinging to the ceiling.

“What the hell is wrong with you?” He asks. 

“I tried to get your attention before I came in–” Miles starts, and then looks at the club Milo had discarded before their dad had come in. “Were you going to hit me with a bat?”

“Was I gonna- Yes! Yes, I was going to hit you with a bat! Get down.”

Miles does. He drops from the ceiling with more grace than he’d shown in his entire life-- spinning around and landing solidly on the ground. This was the same kid who tripped over his own shoelaces every day? The same kid who fell off the wii fit board trying to hula hoop? 

“What happened to you?”

“Just promise me you won’t freak out.”

Milo does freak out. But he thinks it’s an appropriate amount, given that his own brother is a human spider.

“How big was the spider that bit you? Actually, don’t tell me. Don’t tell me.” Milo shivers.

He stands up, wiping his hands on his jeans as he shakes his head. “I don’t know, man. I don’t know. Maybe we should-” He stops when he sees Miles’ face. 

And suddenly it makes sense– why Miles’ hadn’t told him right away.

Because Miles didn’t want Milo to think differently about him. Miles didn’t want his brother to think that he was a freak or a hero. 

The last thing Miles needs right now is a brother that doesn't believe in him.

“This still makes more sense than you having a date, actually.”

Milo sighs.

“Okay, okay fine. What can I do to help?"

Miles seems surprised at first-- and then relieved. He grins at him.

Milo might hate spiders, but he loves his brother.

Across the Spider Verse Thoughts

Across the spider verse was my most anticipated movie of 2023. I came in with sky high expectations and yet somehow the movie managed to surpass them.

By the end of the opening sequence across the spider verse had me sold that this was going to be one of my favorite spider-man movies and when the movie finished that belief held true. Spider-Man across the spider verse is easily one of my favorite superhero movie sequels of all time (I actually think it might be my favorite). The movie just came out and I’ve already seen it, what my brother has dubbed, “too many times” (Though I vehemently disagree with him on that point).

It’s a movie sold on its scope and love for all of spider-man and his lore and yet it never loses its heart in the spectacle. It manages to be a fantastic middle chapter to what is quickly becoming one of my favorite film series of all time.

There’s a lot I want to talk about so I’m just going to get right into it.

Miles is a great protagonist

Miles Morales is a character that I felt Into the Spider Verse really elevated. I had read all of the ultimate comics spider-man run that was his debut series and, while I liked Miles, he was never in the top tier of my favorite superheroes, but that quickly changed with Into the Spider Verse. They managed to explore his struggle and hesitance to accept the Spider-man mantle in a way that was far more compelling than his comic book counter part.

Across the Spider Verse takes the already really strong basis that Into the Spider Verse created for Miles and builds on it through a brilliant meta narrative on what it means to be spider-man and asking the question of whether or not Miles really is spider-man.

Trauma is so ingrained into the creation and growth of spider-man as a character. Ask anyone to list what the most iconic moments in spider-man comics are and you are bound to get answers that include uncle ben’s death, the death of gwen stacy, the death of Jean DeWolfe, Captain Stacy’s death, etc.

There are a lot of moments of loss within the spider-man mythos that define the character and these moments are carried over into a lot of spider-man media outside of the comics. Miles’ rejection of this narrative and the necessity of loss to make a hero in this movie is what truly makes him become spider-man.

The first movie had him accepting the mantle but this is where he truly grows into the role.

Outside of the mask Miles is a unique and three dimensional character as well.

Miles has a youthful charm and good heart that feels authentic to a high schooler that has yet to experience a lot of what life has to offer without falling into feeling like a middle schooler or a caricature of a teenager like MCU Peter Parker tends to do at certain points in his trilogy.

I think this is displayed really well in his relationship with Gwen. There’s an innocence and inexperience there that shows that this is his (an her) first attempt at a real relationship but it never feels surface level because the movie does a great job at selling their bond and how they are similar in key ways that makes it so the understanding they find in one another feels natural.

This elevates the betrayal he feels when it’s revealed that Gwen and Peter B Parker knew everything Miguel reveals to him the whole time and it makes his goodbye to Gwen all the more impactful.

Another relationship I want to shed light on is the one Miles has with his parents.

Miles’ bond with both his parents in this movie is phenomenal but the relationship that is really allowed to shine is the one between Miles and his mother, Rio.

I loved the expansion of Rio Morales’ role. In the first movie she was a memorable but underused character (understandably) and her relationship to Miles took a backseat to his relationship to his father. But here we get to see their unique bond and her attempts to understand him and learn to give him the space he needs to grow into his own person. It felt earned that she was the one he was going to reveal his identity to first before it was revealed that the Rio he told wasn’t from his universe.

As it stands Miles’ arc isn’t complete, but what is shown and the place he is left in make for a strong set up for the finale of this three part story. I have complete faith that this trilogy will stick the landing and provide satisfying conclusions to the arcs and relationships that have been set up. Miles has really become one of the best iterations of the spider-man character and one of my favorites to hold the mantle. I can’t wait to see what they do with him in the next movie.

Gwen’s increased role

One of my favorite changes from the first movie is the amount of emphasis put on Gwen and her arc.

I knew after Into the Spider Verse that if they were going to make a sequel Gwen would likely have a much bigger role considering the seeds they planted to have her connection to Miles grow and the fact that where she was on her journey as a spider-person had her in the perfect place to be a foil to him moving forward. It felt like a natural progression, but even knowing that and having read the Spider-Gwen comics, the way the movie utilized her was better than I ever could have hoped.

Across the Spider Verse took the potential for Gwen as a character and foil for Miles and ran with it by creating a duality in how their arcs compare to one another.

The opening sequence very purposefully made her a dark parallel to Miles, a cautionary tale of what could go wrong if he unmasks himself to his parents and an extreme case of the isolation he could experience throughout his journey. But also just like Miles she’s very early on in her journey as Spider-woman. She’s not even out of high school so many of her canon events haven’t happened yet and, like she learns later on in the film, her story isn’t set in stone.

She’s on that same journey of self discovery and forging your own path that Miles is and having this contrast between them elevates both their arcs.

She’s not just an amazing foil for Miles. She’s also an excellent vehicle for the movie’s themes.

Across the spider verse is centered around themes of isolation, fate, the weight of life, and making your own path and, while Miles is undoubtedly the protagonist of the feature, Gwen is the one the movie tells a complete arc with surrounding these themes.

Her loneliness was hinted at in the first movie but it’s put on full display here with the opening 20 minutes hammering home just how isolated she is in her world and how much the loss of Peter Parker and her role in his death has effected her.

Gwen lacks any sort of support system at the start of the movie. Even before the showdown with Vulture there’s a disconnect between her and her police captain father that stems from the fact that he’s leading the hunt for Spider-woman, her alter ego, because he believes she killed Peter. She struggles to open up to anyone else and make friends in her world because of her life as spider-woman and how intrinsically tied it is to her issues. And she’s lost the only people she feels could understand her with no way that she knows of to see them (particularly Miles) again.

The opening culminates with Gwen losing the last person she has left in her own world when her father tries to arrest her after she unmasks herself to him and she flees her world to join Miguel’s spider society.

This all sets up a very powerful arc dealing with her loneliness and struggles with doing the right thing in the face of her fear of rejection and loss where she finally really opens up to other people and “starts her own band” to stand against Miguel O’Hara through her connection with Miles and desire to help him as well as her reconciliation with her father.

This movie asks questions about whether or not trauma and loss are necessary to make you spider-man so it’s significant that it is instead through healing from parts of her trauma, reconnecting with her father, and making genuine connections that Gwen is able to grow as a hero. It says a lot about what this movie believes makes someone “spider-man”.

Another moment in Gwen’s arc that exemplifies what the movie believes makes a hero is actually Gwen’s reconciliation with her father where he reveals he quit the force. That moment proves that Miguel’s belief is wrong and that breaking the canon isn’t the end of the multiverse as they know it. This coupled with the fact that it’s Gwen’s speech about her desire to do what’s right and protect those she loves that gets her father to quit tells you everything this movie is trying to say about heroism. It’s not the loss and trauma that makes you spider-man but the character of the person behind the mask.

The opening also does a great job of establishing just how much Miles impacted Gwen in the first movie. He broke through this wall of isolation she put around herself and for the first time in a long while she found a genuine connection with someone who could understand and know all of her. It sells you immediately on how much this bond means to her and makes her conflict moving forward really compelling.

This relationship is a linchpin in the narrative of this film so if it didn’t work then the impact the movie’s story and themes would have been severely hampered.

If I’m being honest Gwen’s arc is where the movie hit me the hardest. I think everyone has dealt with loneliness and that feeling of isolation that can come from being different and/or grief. There’s always that underlying desire for understanding and community that many people fear they’ll never have and seeing that portrayed in Gwen hit for me.

It’s the kind of desire I know I feared I would never get, but when I left home and went out on my own I was finally able to find people who understood me and accepted my idiosyncrasies in a way no one ever had before. And I always get emotional when I see that same isolation I felt portrayed in such a raw way and when those characters I see it in finally find the connection they need.

It’s also this isolation that goes a long way to explain why so many spider-people would join Miguel’s task force and go along with his plans. There’s a sense of community where all these people who have lost so much can find other people who understand them. That understand their unique form of grief, loss, and isolation that they struggle to find anywhere else because of the path they chose to take with their life. And won’t reject the half of them they are usually forced to hide from those they care about. Without showing this through Gwen’s perspective the last act of the film could have felt forced.

Gwen is a strong character that really grew into her role as the deuteragonist of the film and the role of spider-woman and serves to strengthen the themes of the film. She’s a great character that has so much potential moving forward and I look forward to her role and eventual reunion with Miles in Beyond the Spider Verse.

The animation

It’s no secret that spider verse changed the animation industry after it came out. Before spider verse many animated movies had started to feel like they fell into a very similar style that focused on realism above all else and in many ways I felt didn’t fully capitalize on what animation could do as a medium (there were exceptions but a lot of studios were starting to lean on the Disney/Pixar animation style). But now there are shows and movies that are taking a page out of spider verse’s book and experimenting. Studios are less afraid to let their animators get creative and it’s been incredible to see.

Across the Spider Verse continues to push the envelope and goes beyond what they did with the first one to create one of the most visually stunning movies I’ve ever seen.

The way they experimented with the animation in different dimensions to bring comic book art styles to life (Gwen’s universe) and further accentuate the character and culture they are centered around (Hobie and Pavitr’s universes) really served to elevate the story, heighten the emotions of every scene, and make this truly feel like a multiversal epic.

One of my favorite visual flares in the movie is how color is used in Gwen’s universe. In the opening it really plays up the stark divide she feels between her and everyone else. She feels like she’s completely separate from the world around her through the very deliberate contrast in coloring and the way the background bleeds and morphs around her. She’s frequently portrayed in shades of blue while the world around her is full of vibrant pinks, oranges, and white.

I also love how the paint like aesthetic of her world’s backgrounds are used to heighten the emotions of scenes like the talks she has with her father. The background bleeds and the colors morph to reflect the emotions of the characters talking. When Gwen is desperately trying to reach out to her father in the beginning after she unmasks herself and at the end when she admits how powerless she feels to protect those she cares about the background starts to run and the colors bleed together and it captures how her world is falling apart and her path forward is no longer clear.

I also want to point out how the lighting is one of the major hints that Miles isn’t on earth-1610. The lighting of every scene from the moment Miles is sent to earth-42 is some shade of purple or green which immediately gives the world a different feel than Miles’. It’s not so noticeable at first that it gives away the twist but it’s enough that it gives you an uneasy feeling the first time through and it’s details like these that elevate the reveal on rewatch.

This level of care and attention to detail permeates every frame of the film. There isn’t a single second of this movie that is wasted and it really uses the medium of animation to its fullest potential.

I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us in Beyond the Spider Verse. If it’s anything like this then it will be amazing.

conclusion

Spider-man is far and away my favorite hero. I’ve read many of his comic book runs, I own all his movies and video games, I’ve seen all his shows, etc. I’m the massive fan that probably understood way too many obscure references that this movie made and I loved every second of the movie I got to see.

I had so much fun with this movie and I hope everyone who watched the movie managed to get some enjoyment out of it. I can’t wait for Beyond the Spider Verse to come out and to finally get to see the conclusion to this animated trilogy.  

side note

Spider-man is a character that is able to speak to a wide range of people because of the struggles he faces. Having a movie that understands the diversity of the people who relate to the character and reflect that on screen through the many (canonical) spider-people portrayed is amazing.

I love that so many people will get to see someone like them being the hero they admire. Stan Lee himself said that anyone can wear the spider-man mask. He wanted people to be able to see themselves in the heroes he created which was the basis of spider-man (and the x-men but that’s another story). And that’s something that I will always love about the character.

most people take after their parents. some take after one particularly strongly. it makes me wonder how long Gwen’s mom has been out of the picture (im assuming she’s dead based on regular spider man history?) and if Gwen’s father did most of the child rearing himself. In that case, who else is there to take after but George Stacy? She’s probably more like him than she even realizes.

her dad said that finding out the spider woman case “would be good for us.” the way she hides things from Miles, while also a bit of guilt, was giving “we’re doing this for your own good”

i read a take analyzing how Peter and Gwen’s betrayal of miles was out of protection for him, because their perception of miles is still based on that fresh faced, awkward new superhero era that he was in when they first met him. they still haven’t realized he’s grown up. George didn’t realize he was losing his daughter through the way he was trying to protect her until it backfired in his betrayal of her. Gwen (and Peter) let it sizzle until it blew up in their faces as well. now she’s gotta repair that relationship with Miles. I think the first thing she has to do is recognize that he’s grown up, like George had to do with Gwen.

Woah like EXACTLLLLYYYY

Like George learning that Gwen is grown up - he had to accept that that included the chance of her seeing morality WAY different than he does - even though they carry out their dedication to their morality in the same ways.

George had to accept that for her being SpiderGwen is her way of helping and making a difference - that she can't fall in line with the institution HE chose. The same way Gwen is gonna have to learn that lesson from Miles.

Like...Miles was gonna rebel and fight back.

And she knew what the whole time, which kinda fueled the deception more.

And with Peter... it's like..he HAS to let go of the baby image.

Like..just because you had Mayday because of Miles and his youth and optimism - doesn't mean Miles is gonna stay that way. Miles does not have to fit into a literal mold in order to maintain the inspiration that Peter got from him, if that makes sense.

Miles is a real person and he's not gonna be young and naive and optimistic forever

AND UH BACK TO OFFICER STACY FOR A MOMENT

I like to think that Hobie was the one to do most of their talking on their encounter - whtether those words be heated or more calm - but wouldn't it be interesting if it was the reverse.

Like her dad sees Hobie come in, immediately sees Hobie and his spider-man mask - and because her dad KNOWS there are other Spider people around hes like 'omg have you seen my daughter - are you with those people please tell me she's okay im sorry'

“I’m not asking,” said Miguel. 

 The boy he was speaking to was the poster child of the unbridled virtue and righteousness you’ve come to associate with the youth. Rebellious, head-strong, and empathetic (possibility to a fault). You had heard of this boy, Miles Morales. The first anomaly. The accidental spiderman. He was surrounded by O’Hara and his subordinates who stood as a silent imposing force, no doubt working to disway him by their sheer numbers alone. But the boy? The boy stood his ground. Like an outsider looking in. Or was it an insider looking out? Nonetheless, you knew it took a strong man to be able to stand alone and that he had the makings of a great spiderman, probably one of the best. 

Miguel on the other hand, stood with his hands on his hips. Towering frame staring down the teenager with an almost paternal sternness. A monument of the now unshakable chain of command he had built from the ground up. Firm in his stance and belief like a river that would not divert its course.

 While everyone in the Spider Society was on the same page, every once in a while there were voices of dissent that would arise from the younger spider folk. The biggest in recent memory probably being the shaky ethics of the ‘Go Home Machine.’ You have been in the Spider Society for about 6 months now. To your knowledge no one had ever been bold or, dare you say, foolish enough to bring their qualms to Miguel directly, not even Hobie. But the scene before you was probably the most definitive example of the growing uncertainty in authority brewing amongst the younger spiders. It was like experiencing one great big generational divide appear right before your eyes. 

Despite the stand off taking place a mere few feet in front of you, your mind was beginning to wander elsewhere. Now silently doing the math Miguel had laid out for specifically Miles but also inadvertently for you. 

“Canon Event ASM 90,” O’hara explained, "A Police Captain close to Spider-Man dies saving a kid from falling rubble during battle with an arch-nemesis.” 

That sentence had taken you completely off guard. You looked around the room from spider to spider, each lacking any inkling of the shock you felt hearing that statement. Even towards the holographic display of thousands of spider men and women kneeling in grief over their dead comrades. You knew all about canon events and the ‘fate of the multiverse’ junk Miguel would spew from time to time. Of course you knew everyone had their own radioactive spider bite, an arch nemesis, an Uncle Ben, but Captain? You haven't experienced anything like the things he was chastising the young man before him about . So you raked your mind for anyone that could possibly be. You weren’t close to anyone on the force. In fact, you didn’t have the best relationship with the ‘law enforcement’ of your dimension. They were corrupt, violent, prejudiced, anything and everything they shouldn’t have been. It's the whole reason you became a spider, actually. Was it possible that he told you and you simply forgot then? There’s nobody you knew who would even consider-

Your niece was 17 years old. She was the only one out of your entire family who knew about your superhero identity, and not by choice either. 2 years ago you had broken through the window of your sister’s house after a particularly harrowing battle against your universe’s version of the Green Goblin, seeking a temporary refuge. You incorrectly asserted that the entire family was on vacation. As a reward for your incompetence your niece caught you battered, bruised, beaten, and maskless in the bathtub. You were basically obligated to tell her after that. The more and more she pried into you about your double life, the more her sense of justice and righteousness grew. You were against her pleas to help you in the beginning, but she proved to be a valuable asset. She was incredibly smart, not to mention scientific, thorough, and calculated. She uncovered scores of classified information, provided live updates during missions, even helped you develop your new high tech suit. In short, she was your girl in the chair. 

One night the two of you were sitting on the top of one of the skyscrapers in downtown Manhattan (thanks to your web slinging) . You were in a low squat with your hands placed between your tip toed feet watching the hustle and bustle of the city below you. 

“You’re brooding again.” She quipped behind you, cutting through your concentration. You turned around to see her tapping her foot and crossing her arms in mock annoyance. 

“Sorry, force of habit.” You chuckle as you back away from the dangerous ledge opting to lean against it instead. 

“So...I’ve been thinking…” She starts with her hands in her coat pocket, swaying side to side like a little kid. 

“About what?” you raise your eyebrow, half expecting one of her outlandish requests, like when she asked you to pick her up from school in costume in front of her friends or when she tried to convince you to crash her friends’ moms’ wedding (also in costume). “Just so you know, I’m not gonna slingshot you out the-” 

“No! About the city! Look…,” she gave a deep sigh before continuing “I hate that I know so much about what’s hurting this city and I… can’t do anything.” 

“What?...What do you mean?” 

“What do you mean, what do I mean?!” she said frantically waving her hands to find the words she had been mulling over for ages, but were now escaping her. “Like- Look at you! You have superpowers. You fight crime. You…you’re changing the world and I…” she slumped over, putting her hands in her pockets “Never mind, just forget it.” 

“You know I couldn’t do any of this without you kid.” You watched her face, still coated gloom. “We’re like Sherlock and Watson,” you joked, attempting to lift her spirits. 

“I know…,” she walked next to you now resting her arms on the ledge staring intently at the skyline. “But I could do so much more. I don't want to…ugh… I just- I don’t want to hide in my room and watch innocent people get hurt anymore.” 

Those words shocked you into silence. A tense quiet that seemed to last hours. Only to be broken by her soft whisper.

“I’m gonna change New York. I’m going to change everything.” she spoke in such a hushed tone it would’ve easily been lost to the wind for your heightened senses. “ The gangs, the politicians, the police- all of it. I’m gonna change it all. Whatever it takes. Imma do whatever it takes…'' she spoke, never breaking the determined gaze with the city below her.. It was a declaration similar to the one you made 3 years ago when life decided it had more interesting plans in store for you. ‘She’d make a great spider’ you thought to yourself  ‘and an even better leader’. You contemplated telling her so but you bit your cheek. Instead, you playfully shoved her shoulder with your own. 

“And I’ll be right there with you. Every step of the way.”

“And this time you’ll be Waston.” 

You laughed, “Dream on kid.”

Shouldn’t wouldn’t. Would She? 

But she could and that alone was enough to solidify your stance. 

It’s a culmination of sounds that pulls you from your thoughts. You look up and see chaos. Miles bangs his fists on the holographic barricade that now confines him. Did Miguel have that on him the entire time? Spiders all around you now murmuring in confusion amongst themselves, Jessica giving Hobie a ‘stern talking to,’ and Gwen and Miguel in the midst of a shouting match. 

“Miguel, is all of this really necessary?,” you wedge yourself between Miguel and Gwen “He’s just a kid.” 

“He doesn’t know any better-” Gwen started.

“- But you do,” O’hara was seething, fingers jabbed threateningly close to her face. He was growing defensive. 

Wait a minute, even Gwen knew? She had been inducted into spider society less than half the time you have and she knew. When you first joined Spider Society Miguel practically took you under his wing and showed you the ropes himself. You had been on so many missions together you had honestly lost count. The hours of tracking anomalies, preserving canons, scouring through files and files of spiderman lore, discussing hot take after hot take on the yet to be discovered intricacies of the multiverse. Come to think of it, you knew canon events like the back of your hand, he made sure of that. There was simply no way a spiderman hallmark of this magnitude would just slip your mind. 

“Miguel, We need to-” 

You’re interrupted by a loud screeching bang that shakes the tower and rumbles the ground beneath you. You shielded your eyes from the source of the blinding light. When you regained focus you spotted Miles, free of his confinement yet frozen in place like a deer in headlights. He glanced at Miguel who, now kneeling on the floor, unveiled his eyes and returned his gaze with his own look of genuine surprise. Then, without missing a beat Miles booked it towards the archway leading out of the tower.

“MILES!” Miguel took off after the boy, starting on all fours before leaping upright with the speed of a demon and a glare bordering on insanity. You watched as all of the spider kind chased after him. You shook the initial shock out of your body and began running. 

‘What in the actual hell is going on?’ you thought to yourself.

You feel a knot grow in the pit of your stomach as the mechanical arm grabs Gwen and yanks her to the platform. 

“Go home Gwen.” Miguel’s voice booming throughout the entire space. If there were any naysayers, none of them dared to voice their concerns, not now. 

Gwen fought futilely against the strength of the machine holding her to the platform. She shot her web in search of an anchor but to no avail and then began to pound against the barrier threatening to snuff her from the dimension completely. As if that wasn’t enough, her last interaction with Miguel rattled your core.

“We’re supposed to be the good guys, ” she asserted. 

“We are,” was all he managed in response. 

The words traveled down your spine like ice. While you all had a good grasp on the in’s and outs of the multiverse, even Miguel had to admit there were so many things waiting to be discovered, not to mention the assertions you all held that could just be plain wrong. Could this be one of them? Could you all remain connected in different ways?

“Miguel.” you turn so fast you end up stumbling after him. He’s already barking orders and dividing everyone into search parties. Portals begin opening ang whirring all around you, this man really doesn’t waste any time. “Miguel,” you repeat. He ignores you.

“Miguel!” You shout, assuming he couldn’t hear you over all the scrambling and shouting. 

“Miguel!” He begins typing coordinates on his watch until a portal appears behind him. “Whatever you have to say, it can wait until after I fix this, ” he turns to step through the portal. 

 “Miguel O’Hara! Look at me!”

Miguel paused with his back to you. He let his head fall back as he heaved a strong, guttural sigh with slumped shoulders. You sounded just like her. Well, of course you did, you were her. Only you would use his full name like that when you were frustrated with him. 

He stood there gazing at the ceiling for a few seconds before grudgingly sliding his hands down the front of his face and letting them fall to his sides. He slowly turned towards you. 

“Yes.” he said, clearly agitated.

He didn't mean to sound rude, but he really didn't have time for this. He had seen first hand how things like this turn out. He saw it himself. He saw it with Gabi. And he saw it with you. Nonetheless, he looked you in the eyes and felt a sting in his chest seeing you in this nervous state. Your breath was shaky, panicky almost, “We’re all going to lose someone? Every one of us.” It broke his heart. You sounded the same as the day he lost you.

“Yes, all of us. Look,” he stepped closer to you and fought the urge to tuck a strand of loose hair behind your ear. “Losing people is what makes us-”

“-Tell me it isn’t my niece.” 

“What?” 

“Miguel.” You struggled to steady your trembling hands you held out in front of you. “Tell me. Tell me it isn’t-Tell me you didn’t know this whole time.” 

He instinctively reached his hands out to hold you but stopped. Every time he’s near you it’s like he’s fighting his very nature. Fighting tooth and nail the urge to pull you close to his chest, stroke your hair, and tell you everything was going to be alright, and that he would take care of you. He keeps forgetting you aren’t the same. Well, you were the same, but it wasn’t the same. Not because you were a spider woman, but because you weren’t his. Because he wasn’t yours. Not since the day he failed to save you. Not since the day he watched you die. 

“I’m sorry,” he muttered. He couldn’t bring himself to lie to you. He knew you loved your niece. You would dote on her like she was your own child, he would know. You boasted of her achievements like they were yours, pulling up her baby pictures every now and then forcing Miguel to gush over them with you. You were the same way with Gabi. ‘I guess you’re just naturally a good mother’ he thought to himself and it never failed to make him smile. So how could he have possibly told you? How could he explain? He couldn’t. So he stayed silent. Lowering his head to avoid the guilt that your unforgiving stare bore into him.   

“You cannot be serious.” 

“It’ll happen years from now. Cariño, listen to me, there’s no way-”

“-Don’t cariño me.”

“I’m doing this for you.” Fuck. “For us.” Double Fuck. “I mean- I- This is for the good of the entire multiverse.” 

“There just-,” your voice caught in your throat. You swallow hard before closing the space between you too, placing two balled fists on his chest while looking up at him with glossy eyes .  “There has to be another way.” He lifted his hands to gently cradle your elbows, prompted by the burning in his stomach upon seeing you so distressed. 

There was only one other time he saw you with this exact look on your face. 

And so Miguel O’Hara found himself stuck between a rock and a hard place. Never had he ever anticipated something he would put above the needs of the multiverse. Not since he lost you. But now that he “had” you… 

“If you think I'm going to help you, you’re out of your mind O’Hara.” 

You stepped back, removing your hands from his front. Your pleading gaze now mixed with wounded determination. He could practically feel you slipping through his fingers all over again. 

Miguel had half a mind to beg on his hands and knees if he had to, just to keep you by his side. Where he could protect you. Where he’d know you’d be safe. He quickly regained his composure and bit his cheek. He didn’t always like what he had to do. 

“Then don’t,” he spat, turning around to avoid your gaze. " Layla, keep her here and don’t let her leave under any circumstances.”

“Whatever you say, boss,” the A.I. said unenthusiastically. 

You make a break towards the portal before he tosses a trapping device at your feet, confining you to the same barrier that held the distraught teen no less than an hour ago. 

“Miguel! Miguel stop!” you yelled and slammed all your weight against the electronic prison, but it was no use. 

He stepped through the portal and sighed, releasing the tension in his body he didn’t realize he was carrying. Never had he ever encountered something he would put above the needs of the multiverse. Not even you, he told himself. You were part of the initial accident that led to him building this empire in the first place.. So naturally only you could get him to pause and reconsider even if only for a second. Because after losing Gabi, it was only you he was doing all of this for. You were the reason he swore to protect the multiverse.

You and only you.

I've just been replaying through Spider-Man 2 on NG+, and there's something I've noticed on a repeat playthrough that I want to ask your opinon on.

Do you think that everyone in the game is too... nice?

I mean, I dunno, but it feels like all the characters sound like youth pastors. They're overly sentimental and saccharine. It's the kind of dialogue you'd get out of a Lifetime movie.

Even the villains and more morally grey characters feel watered down. There's no real bite to them.

New York is supposed to be a city filled with assholes, yet it feels like someone is gonna burst into a musical number any minute now.

I'm not saying the game should have been filled with unbearable pricks, but I would have appreciated a little edge, a little grit to them.

I wanted to wait until I’d played the game to properly answer this. Now that I have, I feel I can say:

I get it.

You’re right that for a lot of the game, there isn’t genuine bite to the characters in it. They’re sentimental, selfless, and everyone’s out to save the world, the side characters especially. I think the only prickish New Yorkers in the story are Jameson and the enemy mobs. It’s arguable the main characters were written to be like that so there’d be more emphasis when the symbiote half influenced them to open up, but I feel the same way you do about Miles’ solo game, and the symbiotes are absent. Plus, everyone more or less reverts back to normal when they’re finally gone.

No character suffers more from this initiative than Miles. Not necessarily the man himself, who admittedly gets to seek revenge for 15 minutes before fighting side by side with the person who murdered his father, but everyone else around him. Rio, Ganke, the people in his side quests. They’re great role models, but I don’t think they’re great characters. And that’s a sentiment I feel can apply to a lot of comics nowadays (especially Miles’, not so coincidentally).

The only character who has a pass for this behavior in my book is Peter, because the entire story is about unveiling his negative emotions, and he delivers more than anyone else.

Spider-man: ATSV NSR AU

Ok, I usually don’t post stuff and only reblog and like stuff but since i just watched Spider-man ATSV and I really liked it that it hasn’t left my mind and won’t leave it any time soon I’m still so hyped I feel like sharing this. I was on my way home when I started to listen to the NSR soundtrack and the inevitable happened just remembering the premise for the game and what happens in the movie I started connecting thoughts and this entire AU happened.

My writing isn’t the best to make a fanfic that does justice to my ideas at the moment and hell if I can’t write I have even worse at drawing so making fanart for this is also out of the picture.

For anyone who doesn’t know NSR (No Straight Roads) it’s an indie game from 2020 that’s very underrated from what I’ve seen. The plot is very simple a Rock duo Mayday (a guitarist) and Zuke (a drummer) enter a competition made to scout for new talents that want to join NSR, a company that besides functioning as a music company works as the main energy supplier for the city by using a Mcguffin that transforms music into energy. Anyways NSR turns out to be a group of EDM artists that have complete control over the city and never allow any other genres to join especially not rock, so after getting rejected and suffering a city wide power outage (which NSR is completely inmune from) our rock duo decides to start a revolution to bring back Rock and take down NSR by hijacking their concerts. If you have not played it take this as a recommendation the art style, gameplay and music are reaaaally good (worth mentioning the music for each boss is dynamic it starts as EDM but as you start having the upper hand the music turns into a rock version of the same song).

The premise for the game and having Gwen and Hobie right there in the movie made this AU inevitable in my mind so I’m sharing it here.

So the characters I’ll be using changing for the AU will be the two main protagonists and the 6 main bosses of the game.

First off the protagonists

Because it’s a guitarist and drummer Gwen and Hobie take Mayday and Zuke’s place that one seems a bit obvious to me. It can also be Gwen and Miles but I ended up choosing Gwen and Hobie. However instead of starting their movement after being rejected by NSR they’re fully into their revolution agenda and hijacking the EDM concerts

DJSS

The first boss is Dj Subatomic Supernova and honestly that one was also an easy pick as he directly fits with Spot, especially because of his last phase in his fight where his face breaks and it looks like a black hole ejecting black matter or whatever. They’re both also so self-centered and silly.

SAYU

Sayu is the second boss and consists of a virtual idol (like Hatsune Miku) made as a project by four adolescents so for the au she could be made by peni parker and the virtual reality spiderwoman (i can’t remember her name :’) ) but idk who else could be put as one of Sayu’s creators in this AU.

YINU

Yinu is a child pianist prodigy so for her I’d go with Mayday Parker, since Yinu also gets help from her mother during the fight I guess Mary Jane helps her or maybe Peter B. idk? It’s just that Yinu’s dad in the game is dead and that’s also one of the reasons she plays her piano because her dad taught her. Yinu’s character is supposed to represent the lack of control child prodigies have in their lives because their parents or guardians are in charge of making all the decisions during their youth so I imagine Hobie would spend a bunch of this confrontation telling her to go wild and start doing whatever she wants to do while Gwen would tell Peter or Mary Jane to pay more attention to Mayday and be a better single parent, culminating in the piano solo at the end of Yinu’s boss fight

So this one’s a bit weird but hear me out. 1010 consists of a boy band made up by 5 robots that are almost identical with the exception of their color and hairstyle so in this case it’s five alternate versions of Miles Morales robots as a boyband while the original Miles (the one that isn’t a robot) is Neon J (the creator of 1010) in this AU. I ended up choosing Miles for this one because despite how much Mayday says she despises them she has a crush on 1010 and while Gwen and Miles wouldn’t really act like Mayday and 1010 respectively I still chose this because of that.

In a similar way Gwen has a crush on 1010Miles but she isn’t entirely into it because the Miles robots have an artificial vibe to them like prefabricated charm and personalities, they can fool a lot of people but not everyone. Once one breaks and the real Miles comes out to replace it they start focusing on him, Gwen and Miles throughout the fight start to realize they like each other mean while Hobie goesout of his way to show how he’s in the wrong as he should question the stuff they do and shouldn’t be following NSR, by the end when they defeat Miles he ends up accepting it and actually rooting for them to beat the remaining members.

I’m using an action figure as a substitute for robots lol

EvE

This one I reserved for my favorites Nadia (EvE) and Pavitr. Eve happens to be an eccentric artist and Diva that is the second in command because of her skill. There’s a couple of reasons I chose to have Pavitr in Eve’s place:

First, during the briefing before her fight it’s stated that the “instrument” she uses to make her music is her body and mind in contrast to all the previous artists which have actual specific instruments (from sinthesizers to a piano) which doesn’t explain much until you get to her fight and see her dance, she dances (and probably uses a bit of magic as well or something) to make her music. If I’m gonna give the ability to make music through the movement of their body to anyone it’s gonna be Pavitr.

Second, during her phases Eve shows she can warp the space around her in what she refers as the Diva’s realm and from what I remember the part of diva’s realm is supposed to be a reference to Deva’s realm and Devas are deities from hinduism if I’m not mistaken, so there’s also that.

Last but not least I like a bit of angst. In the game its shown Zuke and Eve used to have a good relationship as they were a duo and know each other closely to the point Zuke knows what’s going on in her mind while many don’t, however after a certain incident they disbanded. Similarly in this AU they used to be a duo until they received an invitation to join NSR, Pavitr wanted to share his music and art and be in contact with everyone in their community so he accepted, this however was a deal breaker for Hobie so they disbanded. Once he got his position Pavitr could share his music however after being put in a pedestal he no longer could keep in touch with his community as much when he wanted leaving him feeling isolated and only focuses on his craft now as a way to cope. Their fight besides being about taking him down would have the purpose of mending Hobie and Pavitr’s relationship.

TATIANA

This one was also very obvious Miguel takes Tatiana’s place. To begin they’re the respective leaders of their antagonistic faction but also majorly because the entire story of NSR and ATSV happens because both of them had a very specific personal problem and instead of dealing with it by themselves or getting help to solve it they decided to make it everyone else’s problem and never even try to recognize that maybe they’re wrong.

And that’s it that’s all I have in my mind

I'M DEEP INTO THE SPIDERVERSE MADNESS so. Idk how much of this tracks, but I kind of see a metaphor going on for how each miles turned out. The social condition of being an immigrant teenager that loses a parent and the other parent is buried in work to make a living for you both is shit. Spiderman Miles was given a chance and became what he could be. Villain Miles didn't have any chance and became what he became. We see talk here and there abt "lost youth" that lives in a bad situation, but that "before joining a gang, he was know for his love of sport" and etc. I think that is an underlying theme. Also social pressure that sometimes comes from within poc communities that you "have" to deal with shit to become "stronger" is reflected most of the spiders doing nothing to change a system because they're so beat down they can't imagine another way of living.

Thank for sending this ask, because I had to think for a while how I feel about it.

I get where you came from and it's true in a way, but in the other it kind of isn't? At this point we know that every spider man, every Peter Parker or Miles Morales, etc. is different. Sure they have same backgrounds, or canon events that are similiar and care about similiar people (like M.J. for Peters for egzample) or like the same stuff but they're different at their core or hearts.

We know also that they deal differently with the loss. Gwen shout herself from the world to avoid getting hurt again. Peter B became completly depressed and stoped fighting. Tom's Peter decided let other's go and to focus on himself for a while. Miles get motivated to study harder and become a better person and spider man.

Even if this Miles lost a father I don't think he would become a Prowler too. He's too good to be ok with hurting other people. Would he steel food or money if it would be neceasery? Yes, but I honestly think he's smart enought to figure other way to help Rio.

There must be something in Earth-42 Miles's past, that made him prone to violance or maybe he was always kind of this way. Hurting or even killing others is always a choice. Maybe he found out sooner about Aaron (and didn't see him as this cool dud who always supported him like our Miles). Maybe Jefferson was a dirty cop in his universe and that's why he died. We will never know, but I belive there's more to his story than only, his dad death and him didn't having other choice.
