Monkies Deserve Better References pt 1

This is a bit of a long one so to save people who follow me for my other series I'm going to put it behind a 'read more' line. Both for that reason and because I couldn't be bothered drawing clothes so the references are naked (not like anything graphic though, they're basically shaped like barbies, don't worry)!

The reference I used I found on pinterest but was made by Toresoza on Twitter for those who want a better high quality version with all the hand shapes will have to find it on Twitter, but for now have this low quality Pinterest one to start out.

Now! Onto the proper references! Keep in mind this is how the characters look from anything before Macaque's Not Alright! There might be some missing scars that the characters should have in canon that they don't have here (namely MK because it was 4 am and I forgot) so they might change slightly but for now here we go!

Let's start with Wukong! First with his glamours up and then with them down! (Peach included because I couldn't get the little shit's hand to work with me so I fed him).

The scar on his brow and cheek would very likely be canon as well as the one on his upper left arm and right elbow which would have all happened during the fight with Nezha.

Included on his face are also the headband scars, burns around his eyes which are red after the Demon Hospital fiasco. Also from the demon hospital fiasco are most of the dark patches on his body (realizing now I missed another burn spot on his inner right forearm that's older than the rest but that's fine). When he was tossed in the forget his fur was magically burned whever it was touching the table which is why he has lines on his tail, wrists and ankles (noticed another mistake on his tail but AGAIN IT WAS LATE LET ME LIVE /lh /j). I'll fix it later but I'm too tired to bother now.

The injuries on his chest and stomach are a mix of the Demon Hospital stuff and MK's Not Alright injuries while the white on his back, shoulders, sides and hips are all from LBD :3

Other details about MDB/MAA Wukong as well as all of the monkeys is that his fur and hair are slightly different shades that are barley noticeable (I'm even questioning if I did it for him but I'm going to hope I did x'D). Wukong is also covered in freckles which he doesn't bother glamouring due to how much energy it would take.

Wukong also shares a bit of a 'dad bod' with Canon Wukong (I'm still learning how to draw weight, so ignore that he looks pregnant he's just supposed to be a little squishy). He is also the tallest of the three monkeys I have done, standing at a super tall /s 5'6" (167 cm/66 in (according to Google)).

Next is Macaque who until I actually did this I thought had the most scars. Nope. His scars are the biggest but he probably has the least amount of scars x'D

Macaque's canon injuries on his chest and eye are visible when he's not glamoured but not nearly as obvious as his newer scars.

On his back is a whip scar that he got from Havoc and Confusion - the timeline on this is messed up and will be edited sooner or later -but it happened when he was quite young and doesn't bother him nearly as much as some of the other scars.

The scar on his right thigh, palms of his hand, horizontally across his chest and through his stomach all came from the Seven-Star Sword.

The three scars across his chest are from Wukong's Not Alright when he was cut down by the giant cat monster. This is also when the edges of his fur started to grow in white when they grew back (he should have a couple of other white patches on his body from smaller injuries but they don't have set spots other than *maybe* in his inner elbows, but again, it's not set).

Then, the final and newest scars are on his hips which he gained during the most recent run in with Confusion.

The white on his fur and in his hair is his 'natural' color from before he was killed the first time (not when Wukong killed him) while the blue is from LBD. The blue will likely never turn fully white but might lighten over time to be a more gray color than blue, but that will take a long time and unless Macis willing to shave himself completely most of his fur will always remain black

Other details about Macaque are his six ears in his unglamoured form which are red, blue and teal based on the colors from the 2009 Monkey King series which also inspired a lot of Macaque's background and life story.

Macaque is the smallest of the three monkeys and stands at 5'3" (160 cm /63.6 In).

Finally, there's MK and oh boy. I didn't realize how much of a break this kid needed after all of this but considering how his scars look I'm about to send him on vacation. A paid vacation with therapy included because holy shit.

After I finished making MK I realized I forgot to look for any canon scars that he would have, but considering most of them would be covered by fur I'm also not in a rush to go through and look through them.

His oldest scar is on his forehead mostly hidden by his hair which is the scar mentioned in the third chapter in the series. From there the scars get bigger and more dramatic the longer it goes on, so let's go through the list.

The scars on his right shoulder is from the snakes that infest the Earth Turtle! Also from his adventure on the Earth Turtle are his top surgery scars which he doesn't glamour (he spends too much time/energy glamouring everything else and he's proud of them, so why bother).

He has a matching wound to Macaque on his lower left stomach (which might be in the wrong spot but again i'm tired) came from Monkies Aren't Alright when Chang Liu stabs him with an immortal killing weapon to have access to what 'makes him tick'.

Then in MK's Not Alright he got attacked by another non-venomous snake that bit his left shin and left deep scarring there as well but oddly enough that was the only scar he gained from that one.

In Wukong's Not Alright he gained two scars, the one through his right shin and the wound to his left shoulder blade.

The rest of the scars - the one on his face, most of the ones on his cheek, chest, back, legs, and tail all came from Macaque's not alright with some other minor scars that I forgot about x'D. They are a mixture of whip wounds, slash wounds and burns all came from Havoc, Ginger and Confusion trying to control him.

Other details include slight discoloration on his fingers from the same torture he went through to get the majority of his scars. Part of his bangs are discolored to be white and he's covered in countless white freckles giving him a very 'starry' appearance to him. (which in a way makes his fur look like space with the scars being shooting stars and planets).

MK is the 'middle' monkey and stands at 5'5" (165cm/65in , only an inch shorter than Wukong.

That's all that I have done right now but I'm hoping to make Loi, Red, Mei, and Nezha at some point as well as Tu, Yuanhou, Mihou, Changpu, Pengu and a super secret fifth option too ;3

That being said, if there are any characters you want me to try to make a reference for, just let me know. These were just some of the ones most requested by my discord and friends so I thought I'd do them first. Once I have the others done though, I'll post them.

Dark is confusion. Not only is he confused, he makes others confused as well.

Original character concept wise, he was actually a representation of depression, anxiety and fear. Originally that's all he was in the older drafts of FSR. He got to have a personality AFTER the main story because I liked him.

But Dark has a lot of self discovery to do so he doesn't have to remain that way, similar to the audience he learns he's more beyond his roots as a mindless curse.

There's a reason why IS Vio his favorite haha dude's got issues. XDDD

The confusion mostly stems from the fact Dark has context others don't or will just say what other's are thinking deep down but won't say out loud.

And he has no filter.

Dark currently struggles with empathy and putting himself in other's shoes. Not that anyone has really tried to understand him either.

What's really fun about the guy is his nature is in direct combat with itself a lot of the time.

What he actually wants is to hug and kiss people, pick flowers and has an aversion to hurting people in any substantial way at least physically.

But what he often defaults to his smth I just call "Curse programing" for short.

Basically he defaults to mimicking people's insecurities at them subconsciously (Sometimes tho he does it on purpose)

This makes a game where you ask "Did he MEAN this? Or is this just him talking out of his ass?" X'D

Tho there are for sure times where he's being mean as hell on purpose like here:

Dude was salty and jealous Shadow Link "Has so much".

Dark's use of honorifics to fuck with people is one of my favorite uses of language Dark uses.

Like "Master" for Vaati, drawing to mind "Master Ezlo" and "King" for Shadow Link being the two current examples. He knows it bothers them so just does it.

Vaati and Dark don't have a master apprentice relationship but he still calls him "Master" just to bug the shit out of him and that's funny.

A lot of what he says can be taken 2 ways though.

Like here. Where he asks if Shadow got hurt from falling on his ass.

This could either be him asking genuinely if falling on your ass hurts, or him asking out of concern.

It's highly implied to just be Dark asking genuinely if that hurt. XD

Dark's behavior only makes sense to Dark, so yeah he's confusing but that's not his main point.

The Scarlet Letter: More or less. You see, in total society as a concept is something that Marik and Mariku had to grasp before really going out into the world. Their only society before that was the tombkeepers, so really... even if the number of members isn't known, might be a few clans or really just one, who knows and thus that could be a number reaching from 20 to really 300 people. Mariku was never the person to abide to a given rule and I fear Marik lost every concept of it after being forced into living with certain rules... so I think they both are rather going the way of 'Fuck society' than listening to any labels they come across. Of course nowadays Mariku is trying to be somewhat adaptable, but he's never going to just take a certain direction from society.

Pride and Prejudice: I think there are a many forces fighting in this being but I am not sure if pride is one of them. He'd be to prideful to give up for one. And not give up fighting, but pursuing a goal. There are some forces that you can't tackle with aggression and fighting and above all I think he has learned that strategizing, wearing his "enemy" down and then grabbing at the chance he has is a great move to get his way. He has shown that in BC and he continues to show it in my writing, I hope. I think he does have a certain pride in himself, but it is a modest amount and not at the forefront of his problems. He has gone through too much shit to really have a sense of pride, shit that would have broken a proud person apart at the seams. If anything he has lost any sense of elevation or even modesty towards himself very early on. What he does practice though is showing others that he is a force to be reckoned with.

Revenge is definitely still an important thing to him, but he goes about it smarter now. When he still housed in Marik's body, he forgot a very important part and that is to cover his own bases for survival. To have a backup plan if you want to call it that. He went all out and lost everything.

Work smarter, not harder, kids. X'D

Dracula: If I had to answer this truthfully, I think he does harbor some superficial curiosity. Not for the gain of knowledge so much, as he really needs to work with it. The morbid and macabre are really two things that make people uncomfortable or even afraid, so there is a general view that every human has that really draws the limits on inclusion to those things. And while those things might somewhat differ from one person to another, there is a certain group of things for every person to be included here. Finding out what those things are and use them is a bit of his specialty. Hence how he build his shadow games and punishments in BC. I don't think that he has a connection or aversion to these things, apart from being one of them - as a shadow creature - he personally views those things more as... tools to wield. The unprepared mind is easier to take in, once it is distracted or surprised and that doesn't have to mean it is a positive. As soon as you crack that code, you are in and a lot of these things are morbid sights or macabre thoughts.

The journey through Holminster Switch is harrowing, esp when you have to confront Tesleen. I can't even begin to imagine what must be going through Vivi's head + how he'd even begin to deal w/ the trauma of watching that happen and then having to strike down Alisaie's friend ;;;

As Ardbert likes to say (I think it's him?), you grow numb to all this suffering over time. Vivi still can gawk at the returned night sky, but he's pretty blind and deaf to "the usual stuff". I'm putting a lot of emphasis on his enjoyment of daily life, while the canon horrors stay off the screen, for several reasons: that'd be too much to draw volume- and time-wise, I don't wanna retell what's already been told, but also there wouldn't be much new to show anyway. It genuinely doesn't impact Vivi that much. If anything, putting down monsters (and even people turned monsters) is a huge improvement after Stormblood.

I love the shot of everyone following behind the Exarch and Vivi is like. staring at him, and then Lyna glares and the "?!" is so silly and cute. The Exarch doesn't even know this is happening behind him,,,,,

Next episode has a direct parallel to this, with a role swap :9 Coming this Friday~

In the distance stands the Crystal Tower, a proud symbol of hope. Yet compared to everything else, it's just as small. I know it's mostly scenery, but I like how it's also a show of how G'raha feels about his role for Norvrandt's tale compared to Vivi's. He thinks of himself as only a footnote, just a simple blue streak that stands stark against a canvas of stars and I'm going to pretend that this is entirely intentional on your part bc I think it's brilliant.

Somehow I was convinced that the tower's present in the official cutscene?? Just went to rewatch it to make sure and got teary eyed again, that happens every damn time on this cutscene and it's NOT THERE????? Well uh. It doesn't even make sense geographically/directionally, but I drew it regardless because I thought it's in the cutscene and because the scenery looked a bit empty otherwise. But you just blew my mind with this comparison, I'll be granting it a permanent residence in my brain.

I love how Lyna has the exact same expression. I also love that in two panels of this episode, she's the one who initiates the Stare first, and Vivi is the one who notices and reacts. ("?!" and now him doing the little peace sign). I love that in this episode, she really starts to develop a sort of trust? understanding? Like a silent nod, like she knows this man is a good man.

Whispering to Lyna, begging her to reconsider x'D Ah, she will anyway. At some point. Vivi quickly finds a way to lower her guard, it's so natural for him, big charisma haver. Next episode puts Exarch in a similar situation, just to have fun and show how he handles this in turn.

Vivi seems surprised that the Exarch kneeled to him. Is he not used to such shows of respect?

Exarch ripped the souls of Vivi's comrades out of their bodies, and dragged his entire being to a new world. He's a ruler of a beautiful city. While not trusting him too much or gushing over him, Vivi has some basic acknowledgment of Exarch's status and power. And then this guy KNEELS to him. He reacts the same way had their roles been swapped, well, minus the awkwardness I guess :'> I tried telling a bit about Vivi's self-esteem.

This episode has no dialogue (save for the shouting at the beginning) but had I decided to add it, the kneeling scene would go like

This is gonna be quite long X'D

So, basically I drew team zjits (it's what i call team zits but with joker) separate and I roughly lined them up so I could draw their hels (team cabs, mcbs, and mcabs) which is why Joker's line art thinner then the others

With the hels I did make a lot of their traits opposite to their counterparts like how none of them say silly things or have weird names for stuff and are generally not very creative, but I still have some other stuff in there to make them a bit more interesting hopefully

Zedaph: So, I recently drew the Puffy fam, so I didn't want to draw ANOTHER bipedal sheep, so sheep hybrid :D and my original design for zed was with pants, but after observing the test tube zedaph au by Resins art, I decided to go the pantsless zed route.

Ayaph: With Ay I was like "wait, if his name Is zed, which is the British way of saying z (pronounced zee), then it makes sense for his name to be A". You know how zed is always doing new things and interacting with the other hermits to test and show them things? Well screw that, Ay never does anything or take risks, he's had the same damn haircut his whole life, he absolutely hates AMC (AluminuM Cook) because he always pesters anyone and everyone. Ay stays inside and has a very limited range to go places. Oh and he despises the fact that he's a sheep, probably because he hates zedaph, he pulled a connoreatspants and cut off his horns (it's a headcannon thing, he said he lost a cannon life because he was "having a bad day" and my brain went brr)

Mister Joker: We literally have no friggn clue what joker actually is, he never tells us anything. he always wears a mask that basically acts like a normal face, he just can't eat through it or anything it just changes expression like any face would. And the thing is, we don't even know if he's part of a species or if he's his own thing, in fact we don't know if Joker has any actual gender or sex, he just he/him pronouns. Either because that's his actual pronouns, he just goes with it for other's sake, or he doesn't understand it at all (Ranboo style) and just uses them because that's what people use for him. And the tail? Just because I feel like it. And it helps show that he is def inhuman.

Mister Moper: He's very reserved, unlike Ay who just hates everyone, he just likes to keep to himself and doesn't mind if he's with others, but he would rather be by himself. Moper's very much the type to not interact with other people unless they interact with him. Unlike Joker who moves around a lot, he moves so little that you might forget about him (hopefully not). He hates fighting. He likes doing solitary things for hours like coloring, reading, writing, watching documentaries, and just looking out the window to watch nature and whatever else is going on. Moper hasn't smiled in a long long time, even when he does the things he enjoys, or what the closest thing to enjoyment is for him. He has the same situation as Mister Joker biologically, though instead of being cryptic for the fun of it like Joker, Moper doesn't say what he is because he doesn't feel like it's important to anything. Even if he met up with Joker, he probably wouldn't smile the entire time unless somehow Joker figures out what will make him crack a smile. He doesn't mind Joker.

ImpulseSV: He imp man, he originally was gonna be a phantom guy but I realized how many more opportunities I can have with him being an imp, also he was straight up summoned. I don't really have much else X'D

CautionED: So, what would probably be the opposite of demon? Bird!? Love bird because funny. So basically I thought, if impulse is always trying to stop people from accidentally hurting themselves, then Caution would be actively going out of his way to hurt others. He wholeheartedly believes that all problems can be solved by explosions, someone pissed you off? Explosions. Pet ran ranaway? Explosions. TV broken? You get the idea. He's always pissed over something. Caution can't bother building anything remotely structured, he prefers to build organically so that he doesn't have to put thought into rebuilding his house when he breaks something (though he would probably be less pissed if his house is structurally sound). He will start a fight (physically or verbally depending on his mood) with literally anyone who has the unfortunate opportunity to be in his presence. He's very self centered. He hates how seemingly happy go lucky impulse is.

Tangotek: He's a fireborn (the same as sapnap) who yeeted himself the heck outta hell (not the nether) and ended up in hermitcraft, there's more to explain but that's a whole post on it's own.

Boogieblog: Just like my hels, Boogie is an angel, unlike my hels, he isn't a purple eye abomination, he's just an annoyed angel constantly analyzing things, trying to make sense of things. Like my hels, Boggie's always staring, except instead of primarily Watching Skittz (my mc character) and Grian, he just looks at everything, questioning why people do things, involuntary or not. Because Boogie doesn't understand why those things are necessary to do, he intentionally avoids hermitcraft for that reason, overstimulation basically. As an angel who spent most of his existence in heaven, he requested on his own to go see the server, to see what was so important about it. Boogie gets angy when he doesn't understand something, but he has a very limited emotion range, and has never been seen raging out or anything. He doesn't want to be around/look at Tango.

Skizzleman: He's just a guy. There is literally nothing strange about him, this isn't me being jokey at all, he's just a normal accident prone man.

Sizzleman: He's cold and calculated. He has zero empathy for anyone or anything. Sizz finds everyone else weak and pathetic, even if they are obviously better then him, he always finds something wrong with everything that isn't him. He's very manipulative and abusive. He's constantly planning and scheming and wanting control over hels, luckily for everyone Skizz's luck seems to also be a part of him so his plans always fail one way or another, especially with the fact that he tries to do them with a group of people who genuinely don't want to be there, one hates any and all people, one is shy and uninitiated, one Just wants to explode shit, and one is preoccupied with literally everything. Sizz is actually very intelligent and like, 5 parallel universes ahead of everyone, but even so he still gets Skizz moments and that results in him dying in very stupid ways, and yes it pisses him off. He genuinely sees Skizz as worthless and can and will belittle him any chance he gets.

And now the hels interactions with each other

Ayaph: He only dislikes Moper and finds him tolerable, but doesn't try to get to know him. He sees Caution as a headache and wants nothing to do with him. He thinks Boogie is a creepy weirdo and hates Boogie's constant questioning, he tries to avoid him. He absolutely hates it when Sizz tries to call a group meeting, he makes any and every excuse not to go. He'll eventually be literally dragged out of his house (usually) by Sizz himself. He regrets stepping out of his house to see what they were doing all those years ago.

Mister Moper: He doesn't try to interact with Ay, he knows that will just annoy him and what little pleasantness there is will be gone. He doesn't like how brash and argumentative Caution is, he would rather be around Helsknight. He and Boogie have a bit of understanding between them, Boogie would ask a question and he would answer, he doesn't like it when there's something he can't answer but Boogie somewhat has a little appreciation for Moper, and Moper has and understanding about Boogie. He would rather not be near Sizz. He joined the group because he wanted to be with people but not feel like a burden, even when Sizz says he is.

CautionED: "fuck these bitches, I'm just gonna go blow shit up"

Boogieblog: He doesn't understand why Ayaph doesn't want to answer his questions, they're simple questions. He finds Moper intriguing, he knows what Moper is(and that means Joker too). He finds Caution obnoxious. He has better things to do then interact with Sizz. He joined the group because he was curious about their behavior

Sizzleman: He sees Ay as a pain and pathetic. He doesn't understand why Moper sticks around if all he's gonna do is nothing and be sad. He despises Caution with a passion, they fight frequently. He doesn't see much use for Boogie. Despite how much he doesn't like being around them, and how uncooperative they are, he sees them as pawns he can manipulate

Tldr: Ay's always in his Aaron Burr arc, Moper's a less wimpy silver the hedgehog from the sonic 06 snapcube fandub, CautionED is alivebur but instead of being insane and blowing shit up he's pissed off and blowing shit up, Boogie Blog is dream XD but with no emotional outbursts only horrible staring, Sizzleman is glados but replace the witty humor with stuck up asshole
