6x21: Let It Bleed
Then:
Tumblr media
Dean and Cas broke up
Now:
March 15, 1937
Providence, Rhode Island
It was a dark and stormy night, and HP Lovecraft sits at his typewriter clicking away. He finishes his manuscript, and his door slowly creaks open. He pulls out a revolver and heads to the hallway, but quickly backs back into the room and locks the door. A window blasts open and a shadowy figure is there. He pleads with it --but becomes blood cannon fodder anyway.
Dean continues to dissect what could have gone differently to prevent his breakup with Cas. Sam tries being the logical friend --but there’s no explaining heartbreak, folks. Bobby comes in to tell them that when Cas popped in for his late night tet-a-tet with Dean, he stole a journal. But don’t worry, Bobby had a copy.
Upon reading it, Bobby discovers a mention of HP Lovecraft. Dean doesn’t know who that is --and you’re going to tell me the dude that knows horror movies like the back of his hand and reads Stephen King doesn’t know who the father of horror is? And I know that Dean lies to cover up things he thinks other people would look down on him for, but this would be a weird moment to do that.
Tumblr media
Anyway, Bobby thinks Lovecraft knew something about purgatory.
Meanwhile, Ben is chilling in his room reading Cthulhu graphic novels while his mom is watching the sportsball with her new beau. Demons bust in and gut the boyfriend right away. One takes after Ben. Ben gets to his room and calls Dean in a panic. He doesn’t know what’s out there and he can’t get to the shotgun in Lisa’s closet. Dean tells him to jump out his window. It’s too late --Crowley’s there and has both Ben and Lisa.
Crowley tells Dean that no harm will come to them if he backs off from the purgatory plan.
Tumblr media
Sam throws some salt on Dean’s wound and asks if Cas knows about this. “We gotta assume that he does.” OUCH.
While Bobby heads off to follow the Lovecraft lead, Dean and Sam set to finding Lisa and Ben. They summon Balthazar and tell him that Crowley is alive. He blinks and tells them Cas already informed him. They then tell him about splitting the souls in purgatory plan. Balthazar knew that too, ahem. He refuses to help find Ben and Lisa.
Sam thinks they should call Cas. “WE’RE NOT CALLING CAS.” This is a man in pain, Sam, he needs time.
Bobby, meanwhile, interviews someone who possesses a large collection of Lovecraft’s private letters. He asks about March 10, 1937 specifically, and the dude wonders if he’s working with the other guy --”trench coat, looks like Colombo, talks like Rainman.” We’re supposed to assume he’s describing Cas, but ?? okay. They’re competitors actually.
Tumblr media
The guy tells Bobby that Lovecraft had a dinner party with other blackmagic followers. They were getting together to perform a ritual to open a door into another dimension. He has --or had-- letters describing the dinner. Bobby leaves, knowing exactly how the letters disappeared.
Bobby discusses the case with Sam, revealing that one guest of the party -the maid’s son- didn’t die and has been in a mental ward since that night. He’s gong to interview the man now.
Dean, meanwhile, is lining the demons up and taking them down if they don’t answer his questions.
For Murderous Rampage Science:
Tumblr media
Sam tries to get his brother to take a break, but Dean is 100% on an emotional bender and will not stop. Sam then heads outside to pray to Cas --pleading with him to bring Ben and Lisa home.
Tumblr media
When Cas doesn’t appear, Sam walks away, dejected. Only Cas is there, invisible to Sam. AND I WANT TO TEAR OUT MY EYES.
Cas confronts Crowley. Crowley was “merely exploiting the obvious loophole.” Cas demands he tell him where they are.
Tumblr media
Crowley tells Cas the only way to save Lisa and Ben is for him to find Purgatory.
For Literal Science:
Tumblr media
Cas flaps away when Balthazar summons him. They meet in a wooded area, and Balthazar confronts Cas about his partnership with Crowley.
Tumblr media
Balthazar confirms that Cas would be the vessel to take on the souls from purgatory. He could explode from all that energy. Cas assures him he won’t (weeps). Cas demands Balthazar tell him if he’s with Cas, and Balthazar laughs but agrees.
Bobby interviews the maid’s son, and discovers Cas was already there. Bobby asks for the story. The man tells what was said at the time, but then asks, “Do you believe in monsters?” He tells Bobby that the door did open that night, and whatever came through took over his mother. Then the others died. Bobby gives his condolences to the man, and he shows Bobby a picture of his mother. Bobby recognizes her.
Dean prepares his Tortures for Demons™ when his foot drags part of the devil’s trap away. The demon immediately gets the drop on Dean, only for Cas to flap in (or turn visible) just in time to save Dean’s bacon.
Tumblr media
Dean’s...ungrateful. Surly, even! Cas apologizes about Lisa and Ben, and he’s hurt when Dean doesn’t believe that he had nothing to do with their abduction.
Tumblr media
“Dean, I do everything that you ask,” Cas pleads. “I always come when you call and I am your friend - still. Despite your lack of faith in me, and now your threats.” Cas is just asking for backup this ONE TIME. (And you know what? Knowing the crap these Winchester boys have pulled, I always felt like Cas made a good point here.) They lob soulful looks at each other. Cas promises to rescue Lisa and Ben if Dean will just PLEASE stand down and let him absorb every single monster soul EVER it’s NOT A BIG DEAL. This is entirely the wrong tactic, and Dean tells Cas to go back to Crowley and he’ll save Lisa and Ben on his own.
Tumblr media
Cas flaps away. Soulfully.
Bobby arrives at Eleanor-the-Dragon’s door. She’s at a little cabin in the middle of nowhere - one of her safe houses. He confronts her with the old photo and demands to know her agenda. “You know, we’re not all alike,” she retorts. She reacts similarly poorly to Bobby complaining about sleeping with her without knowing she was a monster. BOBBY! WASH YOUR MOUTH OUT RIGHT NOW. She tells him that the world’s lucky that she’s who popped through the portal. The professor is on Team Earth. Bobby begs to know the secret of the portal so that he can protect her from Cas.
Balthazar flaps in on Sam. He’s joining Team Winchester because he’s terribly concerned about Cas’s life choices. He flies them close to Crowley’s angel-warded lockup, and Dean and Sam swoop in to save Lisa and Ben.
Tumblr media
They split up inside the warehouse - always a sensible plan. Sadly, Sam “Soft Noggin” Winchester gets knocked out IMMEDIATELY. Sam plz. Dean bursts into Lisa and Ben’s prison like a little angry blur of knives and in short order, he’s killed all the demons standing guard. They start to flee, when Lisa holds Ben at knifepoint, her eyes flashing black.
Tumblr media
The demon goes all in on the mental torture, telling Ben that Dean’s his real father (JK!) and that Dean is Lisa’s WORST EVER MISTAKE. While Dean catalogues the internal damage, he and Lisa fight. He sheathes the demon blade and starts an exorcism, and I look directly at the camera. Demon Lisa’s got another trick up her sleeve. While the exorcism progresses, the demon grabs a tool and jabs it into Lisa’s gut. Then, she gives Dean a choice: exorcise her and Lisa bleeds out or let Lisa remain animate (but a demon puppet). Wrenchingly, Dean finishes the exorcism.
He makes sure Ben’s armed with a salt-round shotgun and then they head out of the factory. Ben shoots his first demon while Dean shouts at him to “pull it together” and I...just…….
Guys.
I’m just going to box these feelings up and stuff them in my Dean Winchester is a Sad Child attic, while humming Cat’s in the Cradle to myself.
They find Sam and head for a hospital, Dean muttering the whole time that she’s FINE Lisa is JUST FINE she is FINE. Cut to the hospital where Lisa is NOT FINE, but also is not dead! Yet!
Cas flaps in.
Tumblr media
Dean refuses his apology. REFUSES IT. But Cas didn’t come to apologize. Okay, he DID, but he primarily came to heal Lisa miraculously. Dean looks up at him like he completely forgot that Cas can heal.
For Healing Cas Science:
Tumblr media
In Jensen Ackles your face is a menace news, Dean displays grief, joy, relief, anger, betrayal, sad cat memes, and more in like less than five seconds of screen time. He thanks Cas for healing Lisa. “I wish this changed anything.” Regrets lie thickly between them. Dean asks for one more favor. He wants himself erased from Lisa and Ben’s memories for good.
When Lisa wakes, Ben explains that they were in a car crash. Dean enters, and introduces himself as the guy who hit them. GAH. The shitty things these characters do!!! Excuse me while I hurl knives at the wall for a solid thirty minutes!
Tumblr media
“I lost control for a minute,” Dean says, not AT ALL metaphorically about their time together. “And I just want to say that I’m sorry.” He heads out, leaving the Braedens entirely unprotected from future supernatural threats and missing a substantial chunk of their lives. Hope Cas also cleaned up Matt’s body??? And the busted door??? (Side note: does anyone else have weird squid emotions thinking about Cas willfully blanking their memories when his own memories have been tampered with time and time again? I SURE DON’T!)
Dean meets judgmental Sam back at the Impala. Sam, I see your judgment, and I judge thee valid. Dean talks about his emotions in an open and healt----hahaha nope. Dean tells Sam that if he ever mentions the Braedens to him then he’ll break Sam’s nose. He punctuates that with mournful, red-rimmed eyes which definitely deal at least 1.5X damage against Sam’s puppy eyes. They drive off into the sad music.
Elsewhere, Eleanor Visyak leaves her cabin, only to encounter Cas behind her. Cas flaps her away. CAAAAAAAAS!
You QUOTE Miette??!!
Your chocolate's been in my peanut butter for far too long
What’s with the slow burn?
You’re just a man. I’m better off protecting myself
I’m officially on your team. You bastards

What happens in Far Cry 5? I literally only know about it through your posts
Uhhh, okay so this is gonna be a little long but here goes. So, Far Cry games are always you (some PC, changes per game) vs some dictator/cult leader/mass gang leader type sitch. Apparently 4 also ends with an unhappy ending no matter what, but no other game ends remotely like 5 does, and 5 also is the only one to take place in the US or vs Americans.
So, Far Cry 5 takes place in Montana. Basically, there’s a doomstay offshoot-‘Christian’ extremist cult calling themselves Project at Eden’s Gate, following a white dude named Joseph Seed and his siblings (biological brothers Jacob and John, and adopted [kind of – more like recruited to fill a cult role] sister Faith). You play as a rookie deputy from rural Montana, going on this assignment with Deputies Pratt and Hudson, Sherriff Whitehorse, and US Marshal Burke. You begin the game headed to the cult’s center to arrest their leader, Joseph, because a guy in the cult livestreamed a little of a service secretly to try and expose them, was caught, and had his eyes ripped out by Joseph and then was killed on the stream, so you’re there to arrest him. Mostly law enforcement are afraid to go in because it’s several thousand radical insane Americans with SMGS in a cult in the middle of fuckall nowhere Montana, so yeah. Anyway. You show up and arrest Joseph, but a bunch of his followers (PEGies for project at eden’s gate) swarm the helicopter and you crash and the correspondent at the sheriff’s office is working with the cult, so all of you get grabbed initially, except the PC, who gets grabbed not by the cult but by a stranger. You wake up tied to a bedpost and confronted by the stranger who debates a second then decides to let you go and try to fight the cult instead of turning you in, and introduces himself as Dutch. He gives you a breakdown of what stuff is like here, which is, uhhhh, bad. Basically, the people here are trapped because they’ll get kidnapped trying to leave, but the cult comes for everyone eventually. John physically abuses/tortures people into accepting the whole cult “power of Yes” thing and confessing their ‘sins,’ which he then tattoos on their body, then cuts the slab of skin off their chest to staple to his wall, which is part of their initiation into the cult, as is the torture, forced baptism, and implied sexual assault by him as well. Joseph has given your coworkers to a sibling each, respectively, sans the Sheriff, who was sent to one but escaped like you did. John has Hudson, the only female deputy (unless the PC is playing as woman as well). Faith has the Marshall and was supposed to get the Sheriff, and Jacob has Pratt. You want to save your friends and Dutch wants to help, but also asks you to help the people in the community, so you do.
Basically, the cult has many ways of converting people, but also kill a fuck ton of civilians. There’s a lot of times you’ll be driving down a road and see a civilian tied up with their hands behind their back on their knees and two cultists about to execute them (usually someone who tried to flee whose car they ran off the road), and you have a very failable but potential chance to save them. A lot of these people can become your NPC companions as well and help you fight the cult if you do. I’ve gotten very good at sniping, because if a cultist sees you coming, they’ll execute any prisoners so you have no chance to save them. Definitely saved hundreds of people at this point, but it wasn’t easy. Anyway. Also you’ll see vans of prisoners being carted off (usually one or two from a house at a time), and you can shoot the driver and save them if you’re careful. But a lot of the time you show up to try to help people to find them already murdered, or hung up like a scarecrow in a field with flowers stuffed into their emptied stomach, being used for target practice. On an alter, or hung from a ceiling with deer horns tied to them. Staked through on the side of the road with a cult cross. Starved or shot to death in cages. It’s pretty grim.
Anyway, so you go around answering calls for help, doing your best to slowly track down your friends, but also help all the poor suffering people being murdered and abused by this awful cult. There are random NPCs who can be companions, plus specialists, who are more quest-designed-to-be-met characters. These include Jess, Dutch’s niece, who you find in a cage to be shipped to Jacob for psychological torture and brainwashing (I’ll get to him), a puma I loved named Peaches, a pilot named Nick who is just trying to get his family out of town and resist the cult’s attempts to steal his property or buy it out (they stole or bought land and stuff from /everyone/ and took advantage of/ransacked the whole community), but will stay to help you, and a puppy named Boomer whose family called for help that came to late and were shot to death in front of him. You find him in a cage being kicked at by cultists and save him, and watch him go cry over his dead family, then take in as your own.
Stuff goes better, though, and you make progress. There’s a lot of strongholds you can help protect, like a little town where the resident preacher and the bar owner lady are trying to keep the whole place from being overrun by the cult, and a jail up east where the sheriff and a bunch of survivors/rebels are holed up trying to survive Faith. Basically the area is broken up into three districts, and whichever you complete missions in, you get closer to a fight with that Seed sibling (also you get kidnapped and have to listen to them monologue so much. Kill me).
So John will kidnap you and force baptize you, tie you to a chair and tell you how he’s going to torture (and implied assault) you until you scream out your sins, then you escape but he does all that to Hudson, who you can’t save for another chunk of time, and he punishes brutally and is super fucked up by the time you finally rescue her. She tells you that Joseph (the leader—thinks he is God’s chosen prophet and calls himself “the Father”) would come and watch her and the others be tortured and they’d beg for mercy and he’d just stand there and watch. She’s super messed up but alive, and you’re able to get her out and kill John, but not before he kidnaps you and the preacher, bar lady, and Nick the family man, then forces Nick to confess his sins (under threat of awful shit happening to his wife and infant daughter if he does not), and then be held down and have his chest flesh cut off by John and stapled to a wall. You get forcibly tattooed with a sin but escape before suffering the same bc the preacher keeps a gun in his bible. Anyway. Digressing. You eventually kill John and rescue Hudson.
Over in Jacob’s territory, people are inducted into the cult by being kidnapped, psychologically and physically tortured, and straight up mind-controlled to go into fits of rage at a specific song being played. They are pitted against each other in some eugenicist “only the strong survive, sacrifice the weak” bullshit. There’s a militia called the Whitetails there, fighting back. Before you meet them, though, you’re kidnapped by Jacob and strapped to a chair, then subjected to psychological torture to try to condition you to kill the weak. You wake up days later, barely alive, left for dead having seemed to resist/fail his trials, still strapped to a chair. Among a ton of other dead bodies. Some of the Whitetails show up, looking for survivors, expecting none, and find you. Though everyone else protests it is too big a risk and you might be brainwashed, one guy, Eli, orders the others to take you anyway and says he won’t leave you to die. You pass out and wake up again on a couch in a bunker, and a lady screams about you being a risk and needing to go, but Eli defends you again, then gives you something to drink and takes care of you/nurses you back to health and defends you from the more paranoid members. When you’re up again, he introduces you to the militia fighting Jacob’s people, and asks for your help rescuing some people in the same situation you were in. You then start to work with the Whitetails.
Periodically, your PC gets kidnapped by Jacob again and tortured each time/brainwashed. You escape with help from the militia and from Pratt, later, who was kidnapped and broken by Jacob, but isn’t gone, just terrified and fucked up. Deputy Pratt risks his life to rescue you when you’re in trouble and you try to escape together, but the brainwash song plays and he shoves you onto a convoy so you can escape, but doesn’t make it himself before snapping into a rage, and is recaptured, brutally punished and tortured by Jacob, and then left tied to a chair to starve to death in a cell for what he did. The player is captured again, and railroaded into, in one of the brainwashed fits of rage, killing Eli himself. : (  They then snap out of it, and infuriated and anguished, go to kill Jacob and save Pratt. Pratt is still alive, but super psychologically scarred. You kill Jacob.
I should note here that you can do the sibs in any order—for example, I did Faith’s first—but I am listing them in their kind of ‘suggested’ order. John, Jacob, Faith.
So, Faith. The way she gets people is drugs. She uses a compound she calls “Bliss” to drug people out of their minds. After you are drugged up enough, you suffer irreparable brain damage and cannot be cured. She does this to hundreds of people so that the cult can have “happy little slaves” to do all the hard work and meat-shield shit they need without ever fighting back or questioning it. You are kidnapped by her as well, multiple times. Or something??? With Faith you always hallucinate, so it’s really unclear and kinda bullshit. Anyway. You help the Sheriff and everyone holed up in the jail fight off a wave of cultists, keep doing your rescue poor civilians from awful deaths or lives as drugged up vegetable slaves. Faith keeps trying to win you over and get you to do her awful pilgrimage where people climb up a giant statue of Joseph and trust-fall jump off his bible to their deaths. This whole game and cult is really horrific. Eventually, you find the Marshal and save him, but he is really far gone. He’s hospitalized in the jail for a while after. Faith gets pissed at you after that and quits trying to win you over. Just drugs you and shows you how she’s mind controlling the Marshal, who is still under too much of her brain damage and control, into murdering one of his friends, then opening the gates to the jail so her people can get in, and then shooting himself in the head. The Marshal always does so and dies, as does one of his/your friends. And a ton of people at the jail. You run to try to save the Sheriff after helping the survivors at the jail, and fight Faith, who whines about how none of this is her fault the whole time after making the Marshal murder your friend and himself with her own hands while giggling at you about how it’s all your fault five minutes ago, and tries to get you not to kill her. You do, though, and she monologues about Joseph being the real deal, then dies. You find the sheriff almost drugged to the point of no return in a cell, going to hang himself to death while singing Amazing Grace while you can’t do shit to get into the room to stop him, but awake and himself enough inside to plead with you to shut off the gas pumps for the drugs before he hangs himself, before going back to smiling and singing and pulling up a chair under a noose. You run to shut off the gas, save him, blow up the bunker, and get out.
Joseph then kidnapps all your ally characters and drugs them with Bliss into being on his side and rants at you about how all their torture and death is your fault and you are awful for murdering his siblings, then offers to let people go if you walk away. You can do so, in which case your allies get in a car with you, only for the son that triggers rage and homicide in Pratt and the PC to play, implying before the cut to black that the deputy (and Pratt maybe) kill all your friends/each other.
If you resist Joseph, he shrieks at you about not all problems being solved by a bullet, and you have a boss fight where you save your friends/snap them out of it, then defeat Joseph.
Once he’s in cuffs, a nuclear bomb goes off because apparently in this world North Korea bombs the US just then or some shit, and you try to make it to Dutch’s bunker in time. You’re in a car crash and all the other deputies and the sheriff are instantly killed. You are unconscious and dragged away by Joseph. You wake in the bunker tied to a bed with Dutch’s body on the floor, and Joseph tells you he was a prophet and was right about the collapse and you’re his family now because his old one is dead and the game ends.
 That’s it.
And in the DLC for it, that makes not only that the canon end, but that the Deputy joins Joseph and is converted to a cult follower by him, and Joseph is now an ally character leading the remnants of his cult.
Needless to say, I am pissed. This is the /only/ Far Cry game where the villain wins regardless, as well as the only one where they suddenly decide to …??? stan??? the torturing abusive brainwashing serial killer? And of course it’s the one in America where the enemy is a hyper-religious Christian-offshoot cultist brainwashing vile serial torture murdering messiah-complex gaslighting abusive white man who thinks he’s God. I am beyond disgusted by that choice in this game and glad I found out before finishing it; wish I had never played any at all. I cannot adequately describe to you how horrific the cult shit is, and how like, gaslit by the company I feel for having played this game and being thrown that. I think this is legitimately the most upset I’ve ever been about a video game’s writing choice. What the actual fuck. Like, I cannot describe to you enough how fucked up this is you’d have to see the shit they do that’s getting pushed in a face-heel turn by the company as somehow justified and sympathetic like. As someone who has firsthand both experienced and seen trauma from an over-religious area of the US, and just a tiny % over-religious-lead-terrible-actions? I cannot emphasize enough how disgusted and enraged I am.

life updates
(I know, I know, still waiting on Sierra Service Project part two - it’ll happen, probably, eventually)
There really isn’t much to update right now - things are still in the same place they were last time I updated, which is waiting for the home study report to finish working its way through the process.
But I’m updating because folks keep asking me for updates, which is awesome and lovely - I like that people are invested and supportive! Please keep asking me and checking in with me! I am not complaining about that!
It is, however, hard to answer the same question over and over when the answer hasn’t changed for over a month. In previous blog posts I’ve been pretty upbeat about how “zen” it is to be living in a sort of holding pattern, but as the summer ends, I’m starting to feel a bit down about it.
For a while it was looking like placement might happen near the end of June, so I deliberately made zero plans for the summer because I had to keep my schedule really free, and I knew I needed to rack up vacation time at work for when I got a placement and needed lots of flexibility. Now that the summer is over, though, and passed by without a placement and without any trips, and it’s looking like any placement would happen after the school year had started, it’s a tough feeling to look back on a summer spent waiting.
Hindsight is 20/20, they say; had I know I’d have the entire month of July free, I might have been able to visit friends and loved ones or take a special vacation (there are a couple things I specifically wish I could have done and now, looking back, feel that I missed out for no reason, even though at the time I had no way of knowing). It’s hard when you have to plan your life in 2-week chunks - in the past 9 months I’ve made no new commitments and been really protective of my schedule, and that is starting to get old as well.
But I’m hoping that this is the darkness before the dawn, so to speak. I prefer a vacation to go on just long enough that I’m glad to go home, instead of having to wrench myself away from having a great time. So maybe this is exactly how things are supposed to go - that once my life changes in a major way, I’ll be absolutely ready for it rather than giving up a life I’d mostly been enjoying. If that makes sense.
This has been probably the most downbeat of the foster parenting journey blog posts, but it’s real. It would be dishonest to post another chipper, everything-is-awesome update! But anyway here are some photos:

Blaise, my rescue bearded dragon, went for his post-rescue vet visit, where he had a very unhappy time getting poked and examined and swabbed. He is on some medication now which is helping a lot and soon he should be a plump, healthy little buddy!

I met this puppy, named Eevee, at the Rally for Diversity and Equality in Mountain View

I helped weed a pumpkin patch at a charter school in East Palo Alto!
Tumblr media
Chas, Rob and I went to a Rally for Diversity and Equality in Mountain View. I came up with the slogan for Rob’s sign, but had him take it since he’s actually a programmer. This being Silicon Valley, numerous dudes came up to him to offer critiques or feedback about how the code could be improved, so it’s good that he ended up carrying that sign, because if I had gone to an anti-misogyny rally and had my sign corrected by a bunch of men all day, I would have launched myself into space. Silicon Valley tech dudes: y’all need to cool it.

My workplace handed out eclipse glasses and I got to see the sun turn into a glowy little crescent!

you’re a problem but you’re mine (you’re a winner even though you think you’re not)
The pet Hotel AU.
AO3
Summary: Jason needs a job and PetStay needed him.
Pt. 2                  (warning: this does include a dog bite)
~
It turned out that prepping for mealtimes wasn’t as hard as Jason initially thought. Like Billy, he’d needed to develop a system before it made sense, but eventually, once he’d started separating the labels stating the dog’s name and food into dry and wet, the process went far quicker. He was midway through preparing dinners when the door to the kitchen slammed open and a middle aged man with neat, short hair. He stopped short at the sight of Jason.
“Who are you?” Blunt. Jason held out his hand.
“Hi, I’m Jason. I’m new. Ish” The man takes his hand and it’s surprisingly gentle.
“Tommy Oliver. I’m the trainer here and my kid works the night shift” Jason remembered the walkie chart with Tommy Junior written next to green and nodded.
“Oh yeah, I haven’t met him yet” An odd look crossed Tommy’s face.
“Uh, Tommy Junior is-”
“Tommy! What up, dude?” Zack’s boisterous voice filled the small kitchen, shoving whatever the trainer was going to say out of their minds. “I haven’t seen you in like, two weeks” He set down the stack of used dog bowls and spread his arms, offering a warm hug. Tommy was clearly uncomfortable.
“Good to see you, Zack. Oh, whoops, I have class in two minutes. Nice to meet you, Jason” He slipped from the room with a quick wave.
“I can not figure out why he doesn’t like me” Zack mumbled, perching his hands on his hips. The whole image - the confused face, the posture, the situation he’d just witnessed - as truly a masterpiece. Jason laughed.
“Never change, man”
~
“Have a nice day” Kim beamed at the pet parent until they rounded the corner out of eye sight. She dropped her falsely peppy face instantly and rolled her eyes to Jason. “‘I ordered a nail trim and a suite!’ They did neither so he got neither. I literally hate people. They over feed and under care and get upset at me when they’re the one who messed up” she huffed, turning back to the computer and tapping in last minute pay information. He laughed.
“I mean you’re not wrong, but that’s like all retail”
“Doesn’t mean I can’t still hate them”
“That’s fair,” he shrugged, “you get off in five minutes too, right? Do you want to go to Krispy Kreme with me and my little sister? My mom’s dropping her off in a bit” Kim twisted the watch on her wrist and shrugged.
“Sure. I bet she’s funnier than you”
“Says the girl who literally can’t make a joke that gets anyone laughing” She scowled and crossed her arms.
“I will have you know, I am very funny”
“No, I think Pearl will definitely be funnier than both of us”
~
The dog squirmed and wriggled with all its might, crying all the while. The high pitched squeals were definitely starting to hurt Jason’s ears. None of it was helping the nail grind get done any faster. He stepped back with a resigned sigh and punched the talk button on his walkie.
“Red could use some help with a nail grind” The dog leveled him with her best pleading stare. Maybe if she looked sad enough, he would stop.
“Blue to the rescue!” Billy’s voice announced over the radio. Less than a minute later, the boy strolled in and took a firm hold of the dog’s body. Thankfully, it was enough for Jason to finally get a full paw done with the promise of stillness for the rest. He quickly moved on to the next paw. If she wasn’t going to stay this calm long, he needed to be fast.
“Billy, you are an absolute lifesaver” Why did dogs need to much hair over their feet? It just made everything harder and slightly more dangerous. He could get it stuck in the grinder and pull out a chunk if he wasn’t careful.
“My pleasure, Jason. Hey, do you think I’m weird?” Jason stilled, stopped the grinder, and straightened to look Billy dead in the eye.
“I’ve seen Zack eat a burger off the ground even though the bun fell off”
“No, I know- I mean, yeah, that’s kinda weird, but I mean like, you know-”
“Did something happen?” he asked. Concern clawed its way up his throat and the dog sat happily on the table between them, clearly believing she was out of the woods. Billy looked hesitant for a moment.
“I brought Summer up to her mom and I was really excited because we don’t really get all that many Corgis, so I was telling her neat history about their breed, like ‘corgi’ means ‘dwarf-dog’ in Welsh where they originated from and because they are herders, they are the same type of dog that huskies are, which no one really expects because they are so different. And she looked at me like a lot of people do when I start to talk a lot, like there must be something definitely wrong with me” His hold on the dog slackened, his hands instead stroking along her side.
“Billy,” Jason wanted so badly to lay his hand on Billy’s shoulder, to really draw his attention, but he knew his friend didn’t like to be touched, so he reigned himself in, “you are the kindest, smartest, most caring person I know. Hands down. Having a diagnosis doesn’t make you weird, it’s another part of who you are, just like your love of country music” Billy smiled at that and Jason accepted the small victory. “One rude lady isn’t going to change any of the awesome things about you. Don’t ever forget that” Billy’s eyes shone and it looked like he might even cry. Jason wouldn’t be able to stop himself from following if that was going to happen.
“Thank you, Jason”
“Honestly any time. Thank you for coming to me. Now let’s get her finished up, okay?”
~
It was almost funny watching Trini try and hold back such a fat chocolate lab. Tucker was definitely not built to easy walking.
“Fuck you, dick! Stop pulling!” She grit her teeth and dug in her heels, but it was no use. Tucker was headed to camp at his own pace. “You wanna help at all?” she shot back to Jason behind her.
“Oh, I’m sorry, I have to keep holding Gus to make sure he doesn’t kill anyone. You know, because he’s so lethal” Gus was in fact a toy fox terrier, shaking constantly and peeing himself in fear as Jason spoke.
“Dick, Tucker, stop!” Kim chose that moment to step into the hallway from the relief room. She calmly took in the scene; Trini being pulled by an overexcited fat dog and Jason, with his tiny shaking mess. With a roll over her eyes, she reached out and jerked Tucker’s lead in a direction he wasn’t expecting, surprising him enough to get him to stop.
“Tuck, walk nice” she demanded. “If he keeps doing it, just stop and wait for him to settle. He needs to learn not to pull” Her eyes bore into Trini’s and even from his not great angle, Jason could see how struck Trini was. The girl’s eyes didn’t move away once Kim headed to the grooming room.
“You good?” he asked, almost concerned.
“Fuck, she’s so hot”
~
When things were busy, things were busy. Jason barely had a moment to breathe between shuffling dogs into their rooms, cleaning, juggling dogs in camp, and a whole host of other duties.
“Red, I need Maximus when you have a moment; he’s going home” Kim’s steady voice broke through his dinner prep concentration. He sighed. He was never going to get anything done.
“Sure, pink” He left the kitchen and speed walked to where he knew Maximus the giant yellow lab would be waiting by the kennel door, his tongue lolling out and his tail wagging non-stop. Sure enough, that was the sight that greeted him. The dog was clearly excited to go home, if the way he pulled at his leash was any indicator. His owners beamed and hugged him while obliviously clogging up the reception area. But of course, there was no time to stand there and wonder whether or not it was just a little too much, another family stood waiting to say goodbye to their German Shepard.
“Jason, could you please take Grant to 211? Thank you” Kim was already staring back to paperwork, highlighting on a chart the days certain services were being received.
“Sure,” he smiled politely to the family and slipped a lead over Grant’s head, his other hand extended for the leash, “I can take him, have a great day” Grant followed him easily to the door and through it, all the way to the door of kennel 211 where he promptly planted his feet and refused to move. “Bud, c’mon, I need to finish the lunches”
The pleading must have worked, because the dog gave in just enough to allow himself to be guided inside the kennel. Jason knelt to pull his lead and unclip the collar. Grant seized the moment. He shot out from under Jason’s knee in a desperate bid to escape. Jason did nothing but act on instinct. His hand shot out just as fast and just managed to grab a hold of Grant’s paper ID band.
The ID band around his neck.
While all Jason could think was to beg higher powers to keep the ID band in tact long enough for his to slip the lead back over his head, Grant wanted nothing more than to be away from him. So he rolled onto his back and turned his head to take Jason’s hand into his mouth and bit. Hard.
For a long second Jason didn’t even register what had happened. He was so focused on holding on that his brain excused the bite like that from a puppy, painful, but only for a second and completely harmless. That is, until his brain caught up with the sheer pain and the sight of blood. Needless to say, he let go.
Grant took off out of Jason’s view. His hand was mangled, that was the only word he could associate with the way it looked. He must not have registered Grant’s frenzied shaking like a chew toy he was on the other end of. He tried to make a fist and failed.
“Hey Jason, what’s taking- holy shit” Trini wasted no time. She marched over to him and took the hand in hers. She whipped the grey beanie from her head and wrapped it as tightly around it as possible. “Keep this tight, you need pressure,” she tugged on her walkie, “birdhouse” she said simply before pushing him off towards the kitchen. “Go wait there. I’ll get him in the kennel and we’ll take you to the hospital”
Jason blinked in awe at her take-charge attitude, but managed a weak nod. She was gone in the blink of an eye, her tiny voice gruff and furious as she called out Grant’s name. He definitely heard an aggressive ‘ass-fucker’ as he headed towards the kitchen.
Billy was already there, gauze and light antiseptics at the ready. He was so careful and gentle and Jason was eternally grateful, he just wished his head was clearer to express that appreciation. He’d do that later when he wasn’t bleeding profusely. Kim burst into the room just as the cleaning stage finished. She did a quick examination before motioning to Billy to continue.
“We’ve already called Grant’s parents. They were only in the parking lot and he’ll be refused for the rest of the month. Okay, wow that’s a lot of blood. Trini’s going to drive you to the hospital because Billy can’t drive, Zack’s stuck in camp, and I have to man the front desk. She’s usually a good driver, I promise” Before Jason had long enough to process the statement and ask what exactly she meant by that, Trini swept into the room and grabbed his bicep.
“C’mon, homeboy,  let’s get you to the hospital before you bleed out” The next few minutes are a whirlwind of racing out the store in an attempt not to alarm customers and to reach the hospital as quickly as possible. Kim’s ‘usually’ begins to make sense on the highway. Trini darts her car into small spaces and slams on the brakes and accelerator so often that Jason began to worry a heart attack might kill him before his hand.
There was something incredibly calming about her hard demeanor cracking only enough for her worry to trickle out in barely-there ways, like the way her eyes constantly darted over to him, or the way her hands tightened over and over on the steering wheel. Maybe she did like him. He’d like to be friends.
~
Jason wordlessly held out the tray of steaming coffee cups while trying very hard not to chug from his own. With a small sigh of relief, Kim took the tray and then the cup marked with her name.
“Zack’s running late” she mumbled after a long sip. Jason laughed.
“Some day, someone who’s not us will realize and he’ll get fired”
“Let’s hope not. We’re still super understaffed”
“Good thing I’m here, right?” The two whirled around to find a girl with closely cropped hair and a grin too bright for the early hour standing on the other side of the front desk, already in the customary PetStay navy polo. Jason and Kim shot one another confused glances.
“Uh, I’m sorry to ask, but who are you? I only have one person for training on my list today” Kim thumbed through her schedule post-it notes, looking for any name she didn’t recognize.
“That’s probably me. I’m Tj” she beamed. Jason couldn’t help but notice the startlingly bright green eyes she had. Kim didn’t stop frowning.
“I’m sorry, I don’t see a ‘Tj’ anywhere” Tj seemed to sag at that.
“Is there a ‘Tommy Jr’?”  Her entire body deflated with the question with a resignation so bone deep that Jason thought she might just collapse under the weight of it. Kim blinked dumbly.
“Yes”
“That’s me”
“No it isn’t” Tj rolled her eyes and dug around in her back pocket for a moment until she produced a drivers’ license, complete with her picture and ‘Tommy Oliver Jr.’ printed beside it.
“My dad’s the trainer here. I’m the overnighter. I’m transferring to day shift. I’m Green” Even though the evidence was nothing short of indisputable, Kim’s face couldn’t free itself of the bafflement she felt. Thankfully, Zack chose that moment to sprint up to the counter and diffuse the tension.
“Guys, I’m sorry I’m late-”
“Zack, this is Tj, bring her into Bigs with you” He swiveled on his heel and froze. Jason watched as his face got progressively redder with each passing second.
“Hi- er, hello. Welcome to PetStay. I will be your trainer, or uh, senior, today,” he stopped his rambling, “let’s load up” He shuffled awkwardly to the back with Tj on his heels. Jason took a slow sip from his coffee and leaned against the counter.
“He likes her”
“Two damn seconds in”
“He also forgot his coffee”
~
On days where there were only enough dogs for one camp, everyone seemed to mill around aimlessly, trying to find something, anything to do. Jason knew that Zack was having plenty of fun in camp, but Trini, Kim, and Billy would all be restless, not to mention himself.
Jason decided to do a little tidying in the grooming room, picking up and throwing out old ID bands, sweeping up shed fur, and bringing dirty, wet towels to the laundry room. Maybe he’d even throw a load or two in. Between beds, blankets, and towels, there was almost definitely enough.
He hefted the pile of wet towels into his arms (while attempting to keep them from soiling his shirt) and march near-blind to the laundry room. Of course, it could never be that simple. He couldn’t just walk in an do his job.
Instead, he was greeted by Kim pressing the full length of her body into Trini, hands wandering and lips moving as one, together.
Of course he had to walk in on them making out. He was happy for them, naturally, but he didn’t need to keep seeing the PDA. Especially when Trini’s hand was definitely undoing the unbutton on the front of Kim’s pants.
Jason turned on his heel and dumped the towels into a nearby cart. He had to stop himself from sprinting to the kitchen. When he walked in, Billy looked up from the dishes and smiled, perpetually happy to see him. The long purple rubber gloves were pulled up to his elbows to keep his hands from feeling all of the left-over food residue.
“So,” Jason began, leaning against the sink, “don’t go into the laundry room, okay?” Billy’s face scrunched up in confusion.
“Why?”
“Kim and Trini are...you know” He gestured vaguely in the hopes that he wouldn’t have to say it.
“I don’t know, that’s why I’m asking” Jason sighed and scrubbed his face, maybe it would dislodge the discomfort.
“Just trust me, you don’t want to go in there for a while. Maybe an hour, just to be safe” Billy’s confusion and suspicion didn’t disappear.
“I trust you”
“Thank you, Billy” The two of them spent the next fifty minutes filling the time, talking about the dogs, the cats, the store, and their co-workers. It was pleasant when Jason’s mind didn’t wander to why they were doing that and not something else.
Kim and Trini stumbled into the room, looking far too disheveled and satisfied. Their grins were too wide and their limbs too loose. Jason crossed the room and laid a hand on each of their shoulders.
“Well,” he really meant the excited smile he gave them, “congratulations guys, but not here, please. I beg you”
~
District management almost never made in store appearances. Those were reserved for big changes, good news, or bad news. As the entire store was crowded together after hours, Jason couldn’t help but fear the latter. Alvie clapped his hands together for the crowd’s attention.
“Excuse me, thank you everyone for showing up tonight” Zack nudged Jason in the ribs.
“Wasn’t this mandatory?” They sniggered together as Alvie plowed on.
“I want to take the time to thank each and every one of you for your time and dedication into this store” He took a long pause to try and make eye contact with as many people as possible. “However, I regret to tell you all that our store will be closing at the end of the month”
A chorus of gasps, sighs, and groans filled the air and Jason, between fish tanks and dog harnesses, felt his heart break. Alvie continued to talk about what the chain will do for them as if it could measure up to what it would provide if it stayed open. The rest of the meeting went by in a daze. He barely took in more than three consecutive words.
The hotel staff lingered in the parking lot, no one quite sure what do do or say. And Jason had come to a conclusion that these people were his friends, no matter what happened next. He loved the big way Zack felt everything. He loved Billy’s never ending affection. He loved the quiet way Trini expressed her protectiveness. He loved the simplicity of Kim’s humor.
He loved them. Even when he was scooping poop.
“So this sucks” Trini mumbled once they were alone on the pavement. Kim, her arm around the smaller girl’s shoulders, hummed in agreement.
“What the hell are we going to do? I want to keep hanging out with you guys. Forget trying to get someone else to hire me” Zack ruffled his hair and Billy laid a comforting hand on his shoulder.
“What if we all applied at the same place? There’s another PetStay a few miles away. If we don’t all get it, we apply somewhere else. I know it feels like it right now, but it isn’t the end, not by a lot, okay? We’re blue,” he gestured to Billy, “black,” then to Zack, “pink, yellow,” Kim and Trini stood a little straighter, “and red. Take us or leave us” His breathing was labored by the end, but his heart felt big and hopeful. Kim snorted and ducked her head.
“You’re such a nerd. Come on Mr. Leader. Let’s go to Krispy Kreme you guys. I could use some sugar” She threw her other arm over his shoulders, even though it was a bit of a stretch with his height. He shook his head but extended his own arm to Billy, who after a quick deliberation nodded and pulled Zack close.
“I’m the nerd. You play Pokemon Go every day”
“Holy fuck, really? What team are you?”
“Zack, you know it literally does not matter, right?”
“Actually, there have been studies about what the choice says about people, Trini”
“I didn’t know that, B. Tell us about it”

@oneyedchicklet gets a silly starter with donuts
Tumblr media
"Trust me, you're gonna love it." Faith was honestly surprised that Sunnydale had managed to get another franchise store -- a Dunkin Donuts no less -- to compete with its singular Starbucks and several off-brand burger chains. But she wasn't going to complain.
Glory sure was, though.
"Look, donuts are an essential part of the human experience. I know it's not a fancy little truffle or cheesecake or whatever it is you actually enjoy, but you can get one with sprinkles," she explained as she reached down to pet her dog, Chunk, on the side while they walked. The runt hellhound was still quite formidable by normal dog standards, but just like his owner, he was motivated to good behavior by little treats. "Chunky Boy likes the pup cups. They put a little whipped cream in a cup, and bam. Everyone wins."

@lostsovl gets a starter 20 years late
Tumblr media
There were some things Faith might never get used to about living in England. The constant gray weather was one. The accents, another (she and all of Boston had a bad history with the Brits). The local slang, although it did remind her of Spike from time to time.
There were also some things that would never get old.
Now that Buffy’s Slayer operation was largely centered on this side of the world, she figured she should be on hand in case of any emergencies that required one of the original Chosen Ones. (Plus, Ken and her girls had America pretty much covered for now, Cleveland’s Hellmouth all but closed.) She was still getting her bearings, especially since Buffy and her crew were actually in Scotland, but Faith was needed near a place called Glastonbury. Place had so much mystical crap going on they weren’t certain there wasn’t a Hellmouth deep beneath the old church there or something. Patrols across the pond, now that she could handle.
“Yo, Chunky Boy, whatcha got for me?”
Cemeteries here were like, bonkers old. Actually kind of creepy. Faith had grown accustomed to the cutesy lawns of Sunnydale, but these places were old, overgrown, and the grass was actually proper grass. Don’t ask her what that meant, it just was true. Made some patrols a bit easier, telling which of the graves were fresh versus the ancient ones, but it really was a challenge to navigate, especially in the dark away from city lights like America had everywhere. If she wasn’t exhausted by the crop of supernatural creatures here, Faith might have really been charmed.
The Slayer caught up to her beloved pit bull slash slaying dog (found him abandoned in a bush after a nasty scrap with some demons who probably thought puppies were practically caviar) who was growling softly in the direction of a well-dressed woman cutting across the grasses. Now, Chunk wasn’t shy or trigger happy- he was trained to sniff out magical things, like blood, demon sweat, undead flesh. Faith didn’t know what whiff he’d caught this time, but seeing as there wasn’t anyone or anything else worth looking at here, this stranger was definitely worth a stop.
“With me,” she commanded the dog, who stayed in stride with the Slayer as she intersected the lone entity. “Little late at night for a woman out on her lonesome. Could be dangerous... unless you’re the danger.” Faith put what looked to be a casual hand to her hip, disguising the motion of preparing to draw her stake while the dog heeled beside her.

“Ever have a dog, Faith? I did. Rusty, Irish Setter.”
The streets of Sunnydale were lined with ghosts, metaphorically speaking. But, for all the dead people she knew and the undead creatures she fought, you’d think Faith would know some actual ghosts. Like, the Casper kind at least.
No, these silver-lined phantoms were memories, more so. Ringing in her ears as she walked the nighttime roads. What had brought her back after all this time was Buffy’s death, but it was Buffy’s resurrection that was keeping her here. Damn Scoobies always trying to be the big, stupid heroes. Not that she wanted Buffy to stay dead, but things were different now. They were older, for one. They’d lost friends, made some new ones. Faith had been in prison for just a hair over two years, which did not a reformed sinner make, but she was trying. Damn it, she was trying. And Buffy’d been in Heaven. Or as close to it as any of them would ever get.
“When I was a kid, I used to beg my mom for a dog. Didn’t matter what kind, I just wanted, you know, something to love. A dog’s all I wanted.”
Buffy now had dropped out of college- the same one where the brunette Slayer had attacked Blondie on her last trip in town. Hell, half the city had been torn down since Faith was last here, and everything seemed new. But she saw the scars of the old buildings that had been resurfaced. The potholes were filled in darker, with a black asphalt that hadn’t yet been bleached by the sun. Joyce was gone. Angel moved away. Buffy was dead, again, for real. Until she wasn’t anymore.
Everything here was gossamer, flitting in front of her eyes, dancing in the cool moonlight breeze. And maybe if she ripped the sheet off these ghosts, she’d see there was nothing there after all.
“A dog’s friendship is stronger than reason- stronger than its own sense of self-preservation.”
Faith was taking patrol solo tonight. B needed a break and the other Slayer absolutely needed out of that house, what with Willow and Xander constantly giving her crap like she was going to stab them at any moment. One, for the record, Faith was the original stab-ee. Secondly, the more they suggested it, the better the idea sounded. So she needed to clear her head before she gave anyone a reason to throw her ass back in the slammer.
Most of the town was patched up from when she’d seen it on the news, or even when she’d first rolled through. First found Buffy’s grave and all. People were moving on too, going on with their lives. Something that always freaked Faith out a little- people had futures to work towards. She had a past to run from. But with the other Slayer and the bond they shared? She had a present, which was more than she used to be able to say. Solid ground under her feet, and while some of her past was buried beneath it, Buffy was not. She was right beside Faith, even if the earth was sharp and soft, turned up from where she’d clawed herself out.
After a while trolling the graveyards for a while, Faith spotted a pair of vampires with their heads stuck in a bush. As much as she’d love staking them right up the ass, if they we lettin’ their guard down like that, must’ve been something worthwhile in the grass. She approached slowly, quietly enough to hear-
“Well, it’s not a kitten, but we gotta have something to ante.”
“Grab it, damn you!”
Faith snuck up behind and cleared her throat. One vampire turned around just soon enough to see her jam a combat boot square into the back flank of the other vampire, whose head got lodged between some thick branches. “Sorry, boys. Hate to interrupt a little bush-dive for some pussy, but I got a job to do.”
A brief scuffle ensued but Faith dispatched the vampires easily- these two were definitely no criminal masterminds. It took the Slayer only a few moments and then she was on her knees, digging through the shrubs to search for whatever it was they’d been so intent on grabbing.
“Oh shit.”
It was a slip of a thing, small, wrinkly, and underfed. The puppy’s blue nose was red with scratches from the underbrush and its whimper was small and broken. “Hey, hey, it’s okay,” Faith cooed, her voice small to match the dog’s. Looked like it was a grey pitbull or something, but she wasn’t really sure. Didn’t know all the fancy breeds- as far as she was concerned, they were all just ‘puppies’ to her. “Those big ol’ monsters aren’t going to bite you. I gotcha.”
Faith managed to break out some of the branches and untangle the puppy. “Look at you, you got a name or something? A family I can take you back to?” She turned the lump of dog- so small she could cup him in both hands- around to see if there was a collar or anything.
“Nothing. Huh,” she muttered. The Slayer didn’t want to get excited- this dog was probably someone’s. Someone who loved and missed him very much. But he was also so small, so young. Easily overlooked. She’d sweep for signs, maybe a phone number posted or something. But she had to make sure the little guy stayed warm in the meantime- no more vamps, no more thorns.
Faith stood up, brushing the dirt from her knees, keeping the puppy tucked close to her side. “You want...” She waggled her wooden stake in front of the little thing’s nose and then immediately realized it was far too big for him. She chuckled. “Nah, never mind. Sorry about that. You cold?” Tucking her stake into her pants pocket, the Slayer zipped up her jacket a little more and put the puppy against her chest, cradling him like a child. This is the puppy she’d always wanted as a kid- well, granted, she didn’t expect a lost, cold, underfed baby who’d probably been tangled up in that bush far longer than a little thing like that should be. But...
Damn it, she wouldn’t get attached. Not while the dog could still be someone else’s.
“Alright, you little chunk. Let’s get something to eat. I’ll take you back to B’s place and if I find your family, we’ll call ‘em up, okay?”
Little Chunk whimpered against her chest while Faith wondered the fastest way to get to a drive-thru from here. Figured she could get a burger and give the dog some- it was too late to find a pet store now anyways. This felt good. It felt right- responsible, even.
-
By the time Faith had gotten the burger, had her own meal, and then managed to feed some to the timid dog, it was way late. Not really worth getting back out for patrol, but as far as she was concerned, there was nothing apocalyptic going on tonight. She approached the steps of the Summers household cradling the now-dozing dog- who she kept referring to as “a little chunk of a puppy”- close to her chest. “Hey, Buffy, I need your help here,” she called, knocking on the door.
The blonde threw open the front door in a flash, her eyes somewhat wide with concern. “Faith, are you oka- what are you holding?” Her sharp concern softened at the sight of the dog. “Oh my god, I thought you were stabbed and bleeding or something.”
Faith chuckled softly at Blondie’s concern and then simply held the dog closer to her fellow Slayer. “Had a run in with some vamps. Nothing we couldn’t handle. So... can he stay with us tonight?”
