The way open and closed eyes are used in Epic is so interesting to me, because yeah there is the 'The Underworld' and 'Love in Paradise' parallel, but it already starts in 'Just a Man' when Odysseus tells the infant:

"Close your eyes and spare yourself the view How could I hurt you?"

In that moment, he believes that if Hector's son just closes his eyes, he won't witness this horrible thing Odysseus is about to do to him, that he can be shielded from all the bad Odysseus has done.

So, in Odysseus mind the closing of eyes is a reprieve of the horrors, which is interesting when he comes to Aeolus with the wind bag. Specifically, Aeolus in 'Keep Your Friends Close' telling him:

"Just keep your eyes open."

This kind of echoes that messaging of him having to do this hard thing - stay awake so the wind bag doesn't get opened and he doesn't have to kill his crew - and then he'll be home. He has to do the hard thing, witness it and then he'll be home. The moment, he takes a reprieve from witnessing the bad, it goes wrong. Then we get to 'The Underworld' where we get:

"All I hear are screams, every time I dare to close my eyes"

Odysseus can't get that reprieve of closing his eyes anymore, he tries to look away from all the bad that has happened, the bad he's done, but he can't escape it anymore, it follows him every time he even dares to think of turning away from his past, his actions.

Which to me makes 'Love in Paradise' all the more horrifying, because then we get Odysseus on the edge of the cliff, saying:

"Let me close my eyes"

He's begging to escape having to witness the bad that is happening to him. He knows that closing his eyes won't let him escape his own actions, that he'll still hear the screams, but he's still desperate to close his eyes. He is now the infant, wanting to spare himself the view of what is being done to him. He would much rather be held company by his own actions, than Calypso's. And that is just terrifying to me.

If there was one thing the ultimate lucky student loved to watch, was the ‘talented’ hard at work. So much so that when he caught the other doing his duties he couldn’t help, but stare a bit. It would only be when or if the other noticed him staring that he would chuckle.

first dates were virtually nonexistent in nate's universe. he liked keeping to himself, focusing on his career and the small circle of friends he had. but gianna had lit a spark into his life, one he didn't know he was searching for or lest, needed. falling asleep and waking up to her this past week had been everything to him. she was so fun to be around and he loved that she kept him on his toes, never knowing what would happen next while they were together. taking her on a real date had been lingering on his mind for a while now, and with callum out of the picture along with shane, nate felt compelled and confident enough to finally ask her out. he dressed with care tonight, wearing a pale blue button down that matched his eyes and a pair of dark wash jeans. before picking her up at her place, he texted her ten minutes out to give her notice, knowing girls liked to take their sweet time. when he arrived at the destination, nate checked his reflection in the rearview mirror before stepping out. the door opened before he even reached it, a wide and iridescent smile breaking forth onto his lips as he picked her up into his broad arms and spun her around. "baby-—" he nestled his face into the slope of her neck, breathing her familiar, sultry scent in. "missed you."

Day 4: Apple Cider

The brunch between his family and she and her dad was... Needed, sure but it felt a little to taxing on the mind. Fun but not exactly the ideal way to spend time with her boyfriend. In the midst an offer was made, that the two of them have a separate date; away from the drama, from their parents and the messiness between everyone and her mother. And, honestly, it wasn't a bad idea at all.

She had invited him over to her place, opting that it'd be much quieter than going out to eat. The place had been scrubbed clean, blankets fresh out the dryer and a line of movies perfect for the changing seasons. She had been dutifully working in her kitchen, dressed cozily in a crocheted sweater and plain pair of shorts, eagerly awaiting for when her boyfriend would arrive.

today is just one of many days where kokichi's boredom reaches a peak. it's gotten to the point where it's absolutely unbearable. he feels like he'll just die from it! he won't, of course, but that's just one of many things that he loves to overdramatize.

most of his day has been spent wandering around, sort of observing what the others on the schoolgrounds have been up to. really, he's just looking for someone that'll be the most fun to mess with. who has the biggest reactions to his antics, who's the most likely to stave off his boredom with some 'interesting' conversation topics...

unfortunately, he's coming up with blanks. mostly in part due to the fact that it's unfair for him to judge who can tolerate him when they all refuse to get near him. but, not everyone's like that, right?

...ah! that gives him the perfect idea actually.

he's giggling to himself as he makes the trip back inside. there's only one person who he didn't see standing around, talking about whatever and doing what was most definitely something boring. and trying to get under their skin was going to be the most fun.

he's not trying to hide his presence when he heads back inside, almost trying to ensure that his footfalls were loud and sure to draw attention. that's not unusual of him either; his presence as a whole demanded others' eyes to be on him. the loudest stomps of his feet are right outside one of the research lab doors.

and the next loudest noises come from him slamming open the door and yelling.

" shu - i - chii! "

kokichi whines like a child as his expression morphs from the cheery look of before to the usual glossy-eyed look he put on whenever he wanted something. he even sniffles and wipes his eyes as he walks into the room, not caring enough to ask permission to enter. not that he was going to ask anyways; he did practically kick open the door.

She had just been walking down the street as she left her father's workplace. It was rare that he ever forgot anything, but for once, he forgot his lunch, and she had been delivering it. There were quite a few people out this time of day, and with her hat and sunglasses, there were few that noticed the idol as she was headed back to her dance lessons. As she started crossing the street, though, a truck came rushing through. She had been frozen in place from the shock, unable to move, but before a tragedy occurred someone pulled her from the path.

She was trembling and close to tears as she looked at the other.

"Wh-what...I...Th-thank you so much for your help. If you hadn't I-I..."

She felt tears prick at her eyes and slip down her cheeks at the thought.

   “Wait, you’ve died before?” Craig says.  That sounds a little far-fetched, he doesn’t know anyone who’s died and come back before, but compared to the other shit that happens in South Park, that’s pretty tame.  At this point, people might as well come back to life, though he can think of some that he hopes stay dead when their time comes.

   “I don’t know if I believe you, but I’ll go with it for right now.”  He crosses his arms over his chest, piercing blue eyes holding the woman’s gaze, ready to cut through any bullshit she gives him.  “How’d you die?”

sylvie hadn't left his thoughts, haunting his dreams at night and his every waking thought during the day, since they parted ways on a horrendous note. oliver had never felt so guilty about hurting someone, the scars he left in the wake of their hookup more serious than he could've ever imagined. it took her finally lashing out at him to wake him up to the reality that he played a hand in the breakdown of their friendship. so, instead of continuing this living nightmare, he made the spontaneous decision one night to go to her house with his tail tucked between his legs, wanting to apologize again for being an asshole. being on set for weeks with her didn't need to be on distant, acrimonious terms, right? he could fix this. walking up to her door, he didn't expect the plethora of cars parked in her driveway and the clear sounds of a party coming from the house. knocking, he nearly fell forward when someone opened the door at the same time, the drink in their hand sloshing to the ground. "fuck..." oli muttered, shaking his head before making his way into her place. he looked through the entire first floor, seeing most people wasted or almost there, some dancing or making out. not seeing her anywhere, he started up the stairs only to find her at the stairwell, flirting with some guy. jealousy trickled through him as he witnessed the scene, how she was playing with her hair and laughing at whatever he was saying. pushing between them, oli grabbed her hand and pulled her to a spare room, making sure it was empty before closing the door behind them. "sorry for barging in-—" no, he certainly wasn't, but he wasn't about to fuck around and find out the ending of her encounter with that frat-looking jock. "i needed to see you."

Flufftober Day 10: Pumpkin Patch

Chouko: Have you ever been to a pumpkin patch?

A text that kinda spoke volumes by itself -- in invitation without saying it was an invitation. But when she heard that there was going to be one in the area, she just knew she had to go. But her parents were always busy this time of year, and going to a pumpkin patch by yourself wasn't nearly as fun as someone would think.

Chouko: There's gonna be a pumpkin patch in Chiba this weekend!! Chouko: Do you wanna come with me?
