Before obtaining a book deal with Kodansha in 2004, Miyuke Miyabe’s novel adaptation of ICO, entitled ‘Kiri no Shiro’ (Castle in the Mist), was first published as a weekly serial on the Shūkan Gendai magazine between May 2002 and May 2003. For the occasion, Miyabe teamed up with preeminent illustrator and long time collaborator Shinsaku Fujita, whose artworks adorned the covers of most her every book.

Because Miyabe took certain liberties when deviating from the original story and concept, Fujita’s illustrations do reveal a host of characters and events finding no parallel with the game experience itself. Other drawings produce highly evocative reproductions of some its most emblematic moments, demonstrating not only firsthand knowledge but a veritable affinity for Fumito Ueda’s debut work. Departing from his habitual style, quite possibly due to ICO finding its own references within ancient and contemporary Italian art, the presence of the Italian renaissance masters is strongly felt in each of the seventy illustrations he created. It is fascinating how the artist restructures elements of the story to fit the period’s composition of prevalent religious icons, such as the Madonna and the Child or the Dead Christ. Together, they display an extraordinary reverence for Masaccio, Mantegna, Titian and Botticelli, to mention only a few.

Fujita earned a reputation in Japan for illustrating a variety of book editions, most notably the Japanese translations of Stephen King’s and Dean Koontz’s horror paperbacks. He also famously produced the artwork for a special edition of Edogawa Ranpo’s popular sleuth novel series ‘The Boy Detectives Club’. Japanese horror game enthusiasts will recognize his brushstroke from the original Siren game cover art, as well as that of Famitsu’s ‘Silent Hill Perfect Navigation Book’. Perhaps an even lesser known fact is that Fujita also created spellbinding cover for the 2001 Playstation edition of Yoshitaka Nishida’s RPG maker cult classic, ‘Palette: Forget me Not'.

Because these illustrations were a requirement that needed to be met for the publishing of a novel in Kodansha’s Modern Weekly magazine, as is quite customary in the case of such serializations, they were never again featured in any of the different editions of Miyabe’s book. If I am allowed a personal closing remark, I must say that I was astounded to find no mention whatsoever of these works anywhere online, even in dedicated wikis. I lived all these years assuming someone else from among the ever-inquisitive community had picked this up - apparently, that was not the case. Two decades too late, I nevertheless uploaded the complete gallery of illustrations to a Flickr album for your perusal.

welcome to mayoi hell, anon! though i don't know what exactly you're struggling with, i'll try to explain the basics as best as i can under the cut!

so basically - it's a gacha game. that's what makes mayoi attractive; the gameplay in itself is quite boring. (or at least i think so?? 😭)

if you don't know what the point of a gacha game is; it's that there's banners you can pull on using ability stones (the rainbow coloured moons) and you can get SSR cards - if you're lucky. like these of Fyodor, which I desperately want and crave:

they're gorgeous. also, is it just me or is that last card of the Dead Apple trio hot? unholy thoughts....

you can also set your favourite cards as your mayoi homescreen in game and they have like little bits of dialogue and everything. 🥰🥰

so that's the purpose of the game: get ability stones to pull on your favourite characters' banners.

in the beginning, you start out with some R Atsushi card i believe, though i think there's one free pull for beginners with a guaranteed SSR, which will definitely help you move through the levels.

then, the actual gameplay is - well, you try and shoot those funny looking bubbles with your marble. the more you destroy, the better, i guess, since destroyed bubbles equal damage to enemies.

your cards have elements - the R Atsushi you get at the beginning is red for example, so if you destroy red bubbles, he'll deal damage to your enemies. so always destroy bubbles that are the colours of your characters.

OH, something i wrongly thought was that those bubbles with the skull on them hurt you. that's not true. destroy them when possible since they raise your enemies' attack.

your cards also have skills which you can active through tapping on their little icons, though only once in, like, 10 turns or more.

for the skills, i recommend choosing the ones that deal direct damage, or maybe healing skills for difficult stages for your team. if you've got that many cards to choose from, that is.

there's also two banners which use friend points and scene points - one for scene cards which you can choose to give a bonus to your team (ATK UP for example, etc.) and one for power up materials, which you use for, well, levelling your characters up so they get stronger.

the rarer, the better, of course - it's N < R < SR < SSR < UR

there's also those EX cards, though i'm not sure hat those really mean - i think they're just special cards that sometimes get banners? anyway;

you can't get URs through pulling for them on banners, you need to complete stages to level certain SSRs up to URs - those stages can be found under quest -> event -> daily -> awakening materials for character xy

they change daily! there's also stages to get more power up and evolution materials there.

there's more game modes like the “limited” one, where there's events that are limited to a certain amount of time. i recommend doing those since they give great rewards and aren't there forever compared to your normal story stages.

there's the floor conquered thing, which you need to have really many cards for, since you can only use them once - i think? i haven't done that one yet!

the academy and memories section basically are like events, though not time limited - play them for more ability stones, a new story in a high school AU and SR cards like Dazai in a school uniform.

i recommend reading or skipping the story since each chapter gives you one ability stone, btw.

there's login bonuses daily and also daily tasks, which include shining the marble for Ranpo, collecting rewards from the office, scouting with friends points and playing three ability stages (not events!).

for the office - you can level each section of it up using power up materials like crêpes etc, though i recommend focusing on Dazai and Kunikida since those are most useful.

i also strongly suggest to not spend ability stones on marble shining or the office. it's not worth it.

ability stones are really difficult to get in the late game, which is why i suggest saving them up for characters you really really want.

more on banners;

you need 25 ability stones for one pull, 250 for 11 pulls. sadly you're not guaranteed to get even a SR card at 11 pulls like with other gacha games 🤧🤧 you are, however, guaranteed a SSR after 100 pulls. this sadly doesn't mean you'll get a limited SSR, though.

there's a banner yearly on each character's birthday which focuses on, well, said character. increased chances for their cards.

i don't recommend pulling on the standard banner at all - only pull on the limited banners. you occasionally get scouting tickets which you can use as one pull on the standard banner. that's all you basically need there.

there's also limited scouting tickets for, well, the limited time banners.

when you use cards, their, uh, friendship level (?) rises and you get rewards. check those out and collect rewards by tapping on the card in the character menu and then on the arrow that'll slide their menu to, like, the right. if you've earned a reward, there'll be a little exclamation mark on the arrow. you'll find it, i'm sure, and if you don't, ask me again and i'll explain that more thoroughly!

if you sell characters, you get bungou points, which you can exchange items for in the shop. shop -> bungou pts shop

that's a good way to get scouting tickets, AP drinks to fill up your stamina bar and more. the shop refreshes, uh, monthly, i think?

you can also buy skill beads there, which you can level up a character's skill with. these are mainly useful for characters with a special image that you unlock at skill level three, like this Fyodor card below. when you first get the card, it'll look like the first picture, and once you reach skill level three, it'll look like the second one. you also unlock more rewards in the friendship thing i explained above, as well as new voice lines for the homescreen.

if you prefer the old looks of the card, you can switch back to it, don't worry.

[you can also level up the skill if you have the character more than once.]

when you play stages, you'll be asked to select someone else to join your team as friends or guests. don't worry, they won't get a notification or whatever. just choose someone. they only work as, like, a fourth team member for you with a card you don't own!

sending friend requests is something i recommend doing a lot, seems useful. if you get achievements, your friends can react to them using stickers - and the other way around. you get friend points for both! to do that, click the button on your homescreen next to the one where you collect your rewards.

to make your profile look appealing, go to menu -> my profile and set a personalised memo and your best/favourite card. that's the one other people will be able to "use", btw!

Due to popular demand (it was like 5 people, that’s a lot for me) here is some part of restaurant au. Though you need some info before that.

You might not know, but in Japan many restaurants actually just specialize in one type of dish. As I can’t and don’t want to decide what kind of dishes the agency or the mafia would specialize in, I went with some more generalized restaurants. After all they exist as well, just saying that in case you wondered. Now to the what type of restaurants, though I’m still a bit unsure about some things.

Armed Detective Agency

They would either be a Shokudo or a Kissaten.

A Shokudo would be a rather casual and serve typical japanese dishes like curry. Most of them are small and independently owned so I think that could fit well.

A Kissaten on the other hand is like a coffee shop that serves sweets along with the coffee. I thought this would be good, because instead of a genius detective, Ranpo would be a genius baker that specializes in cakes. 

Both options would be interesting to work on, but I guess I’ll have to decide.

Port Mafia

Again two options, because an Izakaya would be nice to work with for them, but the rather elegant way they are portrayed makes me want to say they are a Kaiseki Ryori.

Izakaya’s are basically bars that serve food. Rather informal, but they do look like a place to do mafia business. Though that really depends on the Izakaya.

Kaiseki Ryori are the more refined cuisine and they can get really expensive, so that would fit with the fact that in canon they do make a lot of money.

The Guild

They have opened an entirely independent restaurant, showing off the american cuisine at it’s best.

No one knows where they came from, the restaurant was just suddenly there. It quickly gains popularity, if only because of their trademark icon, the Moby Dick.

As they honestly couldn’t care less about the money, they can give high quality dishes for a rather cheap price and thus getting rid of a lot of competition.

There are rumors though, that the owner, Fitzgerald, does not always treat his employees the best as Montgomery left shortly after the restaurant opened.

If you have any suggestions please let me now! It’s just really important to me that the agency and the port mafia are traditionally japanese restaurants, because...well they are japanese.

regarding nathaniel (oops, i don’t have any icons other than margaret’s that’d work with his section), i’m pretty neutral towards him? he’s definitely not one of my favorites, but he’s also not one of my least favorites.

agatha: the most likely scenario is she approaches your muse to try and get them to join her organization IF there’s something your muse has that she might want. i really want any kind of plot with her and someone she manipulates. she’s open for romantic shipping, but it would be unhealthy: she would manipulate your muse and take advantage of your muse’s feelings for her.

akutagawa: it’s more than likely your muse would fight him. a plot i want is someone trying to get him to loosen up a little and most likely failing. he’s open to platonic ships and would be very difficult to ship with romantically, though that is an option as well. familial ships will be VERY SELECTIVE!

alibaba: it depends on where in the timeline you are tbh but the most likely way your muse would meet alibaba is if they really just.. came across eachother! to be totally honest! i don’t have a most wanted plot for him, but he’s open to all kinds of shipping!

shibusawa: i’ll be honest, i don’t really use him unless he’s requested.

shiroe: oh boy another log horizon muse! the best way to meet him is actually probably by approaching him on the elder tale forums (he’s a member with huge contributions, maybe ask him about the shiroe log). a plot i want with him is him being a gay disaster. i’m open to all kinds of ships with him!

Top Five Hiroshi Kamiya Roles

I’m not including anime that I haven’t watched at least a few clips of, so that automatically excludes his roles as Akashi from Kuroko no Basket, Araragi from the Monogatari series (technically, I watched a few episodes, but I was too weirded out and prefer to keep some of that whole “sister” stuff in the way back), Trafalgar Law from One Piece, and a few other roles. And no, it isn’t his birthday. I would know, we share the same one.

As much as this pains me, I have to put him here because even though he’s one of my favourite characters, Hiroshi Kamiya’s voice doesn’t define him at all. I would literally not be fazed if they chose a different actor to begin with.

I feel like this is Izaya except in a more tame manner. He collects dirt on people then uses it to mess with them. He has a bromance role along with his pal Daisuke Ono. It’s a lot of fun to watch.

Otonashi Yuzuru - Angel Beats

This one is probably an honourable mention because I haven’t watched this in a considerable number of years. But it’s still a darn good role and just didn’t make the cut.

5. Choromatsu - Osomatsu-san

Okay, maybe this is partially hear because his “Obama” line made me laugh pretty hard (among a few other moments from this character). The cast of Osomatsu is stacked, and this character is no exception. Most of the series kind of missed the mark for me (with a 60:40 ratio). But all of the jokes were carried because these voice actors (all of them who are really big) made it so that even if the writing was bad, it was still funny.

4. Izaya Orihara - Durarara!!

Yes, I’m aware of the fangirls, but he’s actually one of my least favourite characters out of the Durarara cast (I really like Celty because of design and Miyuki Sawashiro). Sorry, but he’s just a sadistic loner who can’t make friends. I guess it might be because I haven’t watched Durarara in a long time (still only finished the first two seasons). Izaya is crazy though. It’s another role that he takes on alongside many other talented seiyuu including Daisuke Ono. He plays so well off his friend then making for the iconic duo of Izaya and Shizuo.

3. Levi Ackerman - Attack on Titan

PROOF THAT SHORT PEOPLE CAN BE COOL, BADASS, AND POPULAR EVEN AMONGST GIRLS. Come on. He’s a badass, he has that tragic backstory edge, and he’s still alive. I don’t even need to write an explanation for this one. You people know what I’m talking about. Need more proof?

2. Natsume - Natsume’s Book of Friends

This is a slow-moving role, and I’ve only watched one season, but his chemistry with Kazuhiko Inoue is really amazing, and I would be lying if I said that this show didn’t have a good story. It’s slow, but it can pack a punch of feels for some. It’s a rare shoujo manga that doesn’t need romance to carry itself.

1. Yato - Noragami

Noragami is one of my favourite anime, and I think he really kicked the show up a notch. The whole cast of Noragami is amazing. I love Bishamon, Hiyori, Yukine (yes, I like Yukine. He’s a good kid), Kofuku, and Yato. I don’t really hate anyone in Noragami minus one villain in season two. Besides that, I think this one is self-explanatory if you’ve seen Noragami. Yato is a hilarious god who I would never want to be best friends with in real life.

Hey, sorry for the late reply. Took me this long because when it came down to it, there are many combinations I like. The ones I listed were ones I personally prefer to see happen, but they may not necessarily be the “best” combinations. As such, there was no deep thought for most of these other than “hey these two will be awesome together”. But still, enjoy!

Dazai Osamu and Altria Pendragon (Saber)Since Asagiri said in one of their early interviews that Dazai and Atsushi could be compared to Merlin and Arthur, it will be interesting to see how Dazai can lead Saber to victory. I think Saber will have trust issues with someone as shady as Dazai, but if they work together they’re sure to go far.

Nakajima Atsushi and BedivereWhile I thought about Berserker of El Dorado since she and Atsushi could pass off as twins, I eventually decided on Bedivere. Bedivere has all the virtues and heroic qualities one could ask for, but compared to the other Knights of the Round Table he’s not up to par when it comes to skills and fighting capabilities. Bedivere is kind, but he harbors a lot of regrets. With someone as empathetic as Atsushi as his master, he might be able to fight without being weighed down by his guilt. Plus CV Miyano Mamoru.

Kunikida Doppo and Okita SoujiNo-nonsense Kunikida will need someone reliable but can lighten up the mood whenever things take a turn for the worse. Okita may have a frail health, but her skill with the sword is nothing short of excellent. Kunikida can’t ask anything more for a servant.

Edogawa Ranpo and Sherlock HolmesPredictable, yes, but these two won’t be doing any fighting anyway. They’d watch from the sidelines, locked in a friendly competition to see who’s more accurate when it comes to predicting battle outcomes.

Yosano Akiko and Florence NightingaleAgain, another predictable choice, but it was hard to see Yosano partnering up with anyone else. The Doctor who Denies Death and the Steel Nurse —what a fearsome combi!

Miyazawa Kenji and Paul BunyanOh look, Kenji just summoned a servant version of himself.

Tanizaki Juni’ichirou and OrionNaomi couldn’t help but pout when a scantily-clad woman materialized in the middle of their room. Will she want to take away her dear brother? Thankfully, the misunderstanding was resolved when the woman introduced herself as Artemis and the stuffed toy bear with her as Orion. Artemis only has eyes for her darling Orion, so Naomi can rest assured that she has nothing to be worried about!

Izumi Kyouka and Katou DanzouIt will be awkward at first, but they’ll soon get along and start working in the shadows to eliminate enemies. I believe Danzou will eventually find it in her heart to care for Kyouka; Kyouka herself might develop a bond with Danzou which might be closer to a parental relationship than anything she ever had with Kouyou.

Fukuzawa Yukichi and Hijikata ToshizoSince Kunikida got Okita, it makes sense for Fukuzawa to have Hijikata. The former Shinsengumi commander is no stranger to power and authority, but one look at Fukuzawa and he’ll understand his new master is someone who should be respected. Still, since Hijikata was summoned as a Berserker, one shortcoming of this team is Fukuzawa not wanting Hijikata to fight at full power in fear of his servant going mad and out-of-control.

Mori Ougai and Edmond DantesMORIarty sounds good, but Mori probably couldn’t help but be fascinated by the story of the Demon of Vengeance. Falling to despair and eventually rising back up to drag the people who tormented him to the bowels of hell, the Count of Monte Cristo is the exact kind of servant Mori could see himself allying with. Mori’s clinical dispassion allowing him to come up with infallible strategies coupled with the Count’s driving compulsion to burn everything he sees into ashes would make sure that anyone foolish enough to challenge them would experience suffering like never before.

Nakahara Chuuya and Minamoto-no-RaikouChuuya, who can get consumed by the darkness of Corruption once he activates it, is bound to accept and understand Raikou’s demonic self. For her part, Raikou might dote on Chuuya, seeing her beloved Kintoki in him.

Akutagawa Ryuunosuke and IskandarAkutagawa is a lone wolf. He’s stubborn, he likes going his own way, he rarely listens to commands. Someone like Iskandar will straighten him out. Sure he might not get along with Akutagawa as he did with Waver, but at least one of them will not be making reckless moves.

F. Scott Fizgerald and GilgameshIt’s a repeat of Fate Zero with Fitzgerald as Tokiomi!! AHHHHHHH. Ahem. Well, seeing as Gil is the King of Heroes, Fitzgerald would probably think he’s the only hero worthy of being his servant. He’d probably let Gilgamesh do as he pleases, so long as he wins the HGW for him.

Oda Sakunosuke and William ShakespeareWhile I thought of Archer (Emiya) and Siegfried (Sumanai) because of seiyuu reasons, I think ultimately Oda will appreciate someone like Shakespeare by his side. Was this also influenced by the fact by that Asagiri tweeted they wanted to raise Shakespeare and Asagiri had an Odasaku icon? Er, no comment.

Fyodor Dostoevsky and Jeanne d'Arc [Alter]If Kirei appeared as the pseudo-servant Rasputin it would have been the perfect combination, but since we don’t know if he’ll be a servant or not in FGO, Fyodor will have to do with Jeanne Alter. An existence that shouldn’t have been born, Jeanne is filled with wrath and darkness. Fyodor will probably let her do as she wishes for a while, before coming up with a plan that is sure to make everyone cower before the Dragon Witch.

Summary:  When Ranpo checks up on Poe after a long night of stressful, deadline-induced writing, he tells himself that it's only because he needs Poe to be well enough to amuse him.

Ranpo hasn’t exactly told Poe yet that he’d borrowed the spare key to Poe’s apartment, but Poe never looks concerned when Ranpo shows up uninvited, so it’s probably fine.  He skips ringing the doorbell and lets himself in quietly, knowing that Poe will be asleep today even though it’s past noon.  Poe had been panicking over the phone last night about his 8am deadline for the next chapter of his serialized story, so Ranpo knows that he was most likely up all night writing it.  To Ranpo, it’s strange to think that other people put value on deadlines, but despite what Poe expresses in his gloomy poetry and dark prose, he cares deeply about many things, punctuality included.

Ranpo kicks off his shoes in the front hallway and steps into the main living space.  “Ah, Poe-kun,” he says, spotting his friend asleep at his desk in the corner, “I really don’t get your dedication to your job.”  It’s a little bit cute to see Poe work himself into a tizzy, all wide-eyed and red-faced, but it’s no fun when he’s actually upset and then crashes from stress afterwards.  He doesn’t take care of himself at all when he gets too deep into his writing, which is why Ranpo is here to check up on him.  It would be troublesome if Poe was too hungry or tired or sick to write mysteries for Ranpo, because there’s really nothing else in the world that compares to spending time with Poe.

He flicks the off switch for Poe’s desk lamp and jiggles the computer mouse.  The screen wakes up and shows Poe’s inbox, complete with a “replied” icon next to the email at the top from Poe’s editor.  Good.  “You better let me read the new chapter,” Ranpo says to his sleeping friend, poking him on the shoulder.  “This one had some potential.”  He’s not worried about waking Poe up.  After pulling late-night, last-minute writing sessions, Poe always sleeps like the dead.

Ranpo steps back and notices Poe’s posture.  “You’re going to hurt your neck if you stay there.”  It would be a shame if Poe couldn’t entertain him because of something like that.  He considers the couch, which is closer than Poe’s bed at the moment and much comfier than Poe’s desk chair, and decides that it will do for now.  Ranpo grabs Poe by the shoulders and pulls until he’s leaning back on the chair instead of slumped on the desk.  He swivels the chair around, grabs Poe from under his armpits, and tugs.  Ranpo ends up with Poe’s head on his shoulder and his arms dangling to the sides.  “You’re heavy, Poe-kun.  Who needs to be this tall, huh?”  He adjusts his grip around Poe and slowly starts to walk backwards towards the couch, dragging his friend with him.

Ranpo stops to fix his hold again and wonders if maybe he’s making a mistake.  Poe is a pretty solid guy and Ranpo isn’t one for physical exercise unless it’s racing after a food cart.  This probably wasn’t his best idea… but at this point, the couch is closer than the chair, so he might as well finish.  He takes another step back and remembers too late that Carl tends to leave his toys around the living room, so with a squeak from the toy hedgehog and an “oh crap” from Ranpo, the two detectives go down.

Fortunately, Poe’s landing is mostly cushioned and he remains asleep.  Unfortunately, it’s Ranpo’s body that does the cushioning and he has the breath knocked out of him from both the landing and Poe’s torso on his chest.  “Ow.”  Ranpo waits until his lungs are functioning properly again before looking around.  They’re right next to the arm of the couch, but there’s no way that Ranpo is going to be able to get Poe up there from the floor.  His only advantage before was that Poe was already partly upright, so it would’ve just been a matter of laying him out on the couch.

Now what?  Ranpo could just roll Poe off of him, but the way Ranpo’s luck is going today, Poe would probably smack his head on the floor, which would completely negate Ranpo’s attempts to make Poe more comfortable.  “Well, I guess we’re stuck here, Poe-kun,” he declares.  Ranpo is probably better than the old carpet in terms of comfiness, anyway.  They just need – ah, yes, they’re close enough that he can reach the pillows.  Ranpo drags one down from the couch and sets it next to him.  From there, he shifts Poe’s head from his collarbone to the pillow.  Perfect.

With Poe settled, Ranpo grabs another pillow for himself and feels for his phone (miraculously uncrunched during the fall) in his pocket.  Once it’s out, Ranpo opens up his pinball app and rests the bottom of the phone on Poe’s shoulder blade, his arms wrapped around Poe to cradle the device and reach the flippers.

His battery lasts forty minutes, during which time Poe has shifted so that he’s only half sprawled on Ranpo.  Should he wake Poe up?  On the one hand, Ranpo has been very patient until now and would like to move from this position, but on the other hand, Poe has been so calm and unworried, breathing softly into Ranpo’s ear, and it seems rude to ruin that.  He closes his eyes to weigh his options, and after a few minutes of indecision, he drifts off.

Unlike Poe, Ranpo is a light sleeper, so the slight movement from on top of him coupled with the change in Poe’s breathing means that he’s awake when Poe starts to blink the sleep from his eyes.  Poe pushes up to his knees and elbows as he lifts his head from the pillow.  “Ranpo-kun?  You’re here?”

Something about that breathy, half-asleep quality to his voice makes Ranpo’s whole body shiver.  There’s an element of complete rightness about it that makes Ranpo want to pull Poe back down until he figures out how to bottle this feeling.  “Obviously I’m here.  Are you always this observant when you wake up?”

Poe’s face turns a brilliant red.  “I w-wouldn’t know, I don’t usually, um, wake up with – with people.  Why are you here?”

“Making sure you were comfortable so you could write me mysteries.”

He makes a strangled sound.  “And you thought this would be…?”  Poe looks positively scandalized, an expression Ranpo decides that he likes very much.

“Well, I was aiming for you to end up on the couch, but –” he gestures towards the wayward toy “– Carl strikes again.”

“He’s a good boy,” Poe insists, mostly out of habit.  They’ve had discussions about Poe’s choice in pets before.

Ranpo laughs.  “Are you saying that it’s good we ended up like this because of him?”  He’s just teasing, but Poe goes silent and his breaths turn shallow.  “Poe-kun?”  He watches Poe’s gaze shift down to Ranpo’s lips, something deep and dark behind his eyes.  Suddenly Ranpo’s having trouble breathing too, and he can’t blame it on Poe’s weight because Poe is hovering above him, so close but only touching where his legs and forearms brush Ranpo’s sides.  Ranpo’s heart is pounding and he comes to the very belated realization that, despite all of his rationalizing, his trip here was not at all motivated by self-interest, but rather by interest in Poe.  Poe’s well-being means something to him.  It’s not just about mysteries, or about camaraderie between fellow detectives, it’s about Ranpo caring enough to go out of his way for Poe, because he likes Poe.

“Oh,” Ranpo says stupidly.

Poe blinks and the desire in his eyes vanishes.  “‘Oh’?” he prompts.

Ranpo reckons that Poe’s probably not going to make the first move.  He’s obviously aware of his own feelings, but he has yet to express them out loud to Ranpo – Poe is very soft-hearted when he’s not plotting elaborate revenge, and Ranpo imagines that Poe would not recover easily from heartbreak.

“You won’t have to worry about that,” Ranpo says as if Poe is privy to his thoughts.

“About wh–”

Ranpo kisses him.  It’s just a peck the first time, but when he draws back and sees Poe’s adorably gobsmacked expression, he knows he has to do it again.  He slides one hand into Poe’s hair and tilts his head to get a better angle as he brings their mouths together again.  Ranpo immediately loves the tingle that spreads through him at the contact, and the surprised sound from Poe makes his toes curl.

Poe kisses him back for a few seconds, and then abruptly pulls back.  “Wait, what – what’s going on?”

“You didn’t like it?”

“That’s not – I just woke up and suddenly y-you’re kissing me?”

“Ah,” Ranpo says with satisfaction, “you’re wondering if you’re still asleep.”

Poe rolls his eyes at that and continues without losing momentum: “I didn’t even know that you – I didn’t think you were interested.”

“Me neither.”

“Don’t be so blunt!”

“I am, though.  Interested, that is.  You’re…”  Why is this hard to say out loud?  Ranpo’s done nothing but think about Poe for the last few hours, so saying it should be easy.  “You’re the one that I want to keep safe, even from you.  You’re kinda reckless when you write.”

Poe starts to turn red again.  “That’s… very sweet of you.  No one’s ever been worried about that before.”

“And no one’s ever motivated me to keep them out of danger before.  I guess it’s a good thing neither of us are going anywhere, huh?”

This time, it’s Poe who leans in and kisses first.
