Quick Rant because I am fed up with seeing this in posts about not romanticizing mental illness. Trigger warning for self harm.

You can destigmatize and accept it without romanticizing it. And for the love of all things holy, if your "don't romanticize mental illness!" post includes "self-harm scars are NOT beautiful," you need to take several seats. This is not a call-out post for anyone in particular. Just a trend I've noticed.

You have absolutely NO RIGHT to decide what someone does or does not see as beautiful, ESPECIALLY ON THEMSELF??

It takes A LONG TIME and a LOT OF WORK to accept that you've got scars that aren't going away. It's HARD. It SUCKS to know that there is a permanent reminder of terrible days and horrible coping mechanisms etched on my skin. If I decide that those are MY BEAUTIFUL, that is my right. They're part of my survival journey, a journey I'm still on, a journey many have taken.

They are my beautiful. I deserve, as a human being, to count all of me towards my beautiful. You don't have to glorify self-harm to acknowledge that it isn't an ugly, shameful thing to hide! Whether you realize it or not, saying this directly contributes to stigma against talking about self-harm! It says to hide your scars if you want to look beautiful! It says beauty is more important than self-acceptance! This is NOT A GOOD MESSAGE!

I am beautiful and so are the scars on my skin. I don't have many. They're still there. They're part of me and if all of me is beautiful, so are they. You cannot say otherwise.
