All You Need is Blood was a pleasant surprise. I was hoping for a decent teen oriented rom-zom-com and got a darkly humorous look at extreme filmmaking taken to a whole new level.

Hey fellas! I remember promising that I'd introduce Lucine and talk a bit about her!! 👀

Lucine is genuinely one of my favourite OCs so I'm very excited to do so!

(Literally did this one yesterday tee hee)

Lucine is a deer mobian! She's an (unofficial) scientist who mainly focuses on the Chemistry field in terms of science fields, creating and partaking in many funky experiments working with chemicals and substances! However, that's not all she does. She also creates her own things too! Weapons, gadgets, technology, you name it. She loves to create things to aid her in her experiments, and even goals! One of her best inventions was her "Chem-bag" as she calls it (Other than her robot but we'll get to that one in a bit).

Now, who exactly is she? Well. Lucine is an aspiring villain who has had that dream since she was a young teen. She aspires to be like the villains she hears about in the media and sees around. Power, is what she wants. As all villains do, of course. However, she does have an idol she desires to work alongside. I'll get to that in a little bit too.

♡ With her skills in agility and combat (specifically with the weapons she creates on her own), she is one of the only mobians who haven't been infected from the metal virus. She managed to survive somehow, by keeping in secluded spaces and when outside, keeping far away from any means of the 'Zom-bots' by staying on top of rooftops.

♡ Lucine had a best friend called Buttercup who she was originally friends with since she was a little fawn mobian. Buttercup stuck by her through thick and thin until their teen years in which an event occurred, and long story short, he broke Lucine's trust. Buttercup has forever been a huge supporter of Dr. Eggman, and his dream has been to work in his team. Unlike Lucine, Buttercup doesnt know much about science. If anything at all. However, his main focus is building technology, weaponry and gadgets like Lucine does. He is far more skilled in this area than Lucine is, as he has done it his whole life whilst Lucine's main focus was and still is science.

♡ Lucine has a 'Chem-bag' in which she invented/created herself! It works in a way of plastic balls being kept in a seperate bag she carries (the little one attached to her skirt, thats basically her storing place). The (empty) plastic balls are placed inside the bag. The interface contains buttons of elements from the periodic table. From there, she enters in a combination to create certain reactions to help her in battle. However, they are kept in the plastic ball, and the reactions occur once the ball is thrown. Some of the reactions include hardening foam, blinding lights, smoke, etc. (These may not physically make sense or anything but shh).

Here was the previous design!! (Im thinking of keeping the star interface instead of the heart to be honest XP just would be a nice reference to the fact that she idolises Starline so much)

♡ As mentioned, Lucine has been a Starline admirer/fan since she was a young adult. Lucine has always had an interest for science, but Starline gave her a goal; to meet him and use her science skills to assist him in his deeds. Starline gave her a goal in life. But eventually, she grew a tiny bit obsessed with the platypus. Posters, designs of gadgets inspired by him, you name it. She even attempted to create an antidote for the metal virus so that she'd be noticed (Still deciding on whether to make her canonically succeed or not X3)! Unfortunately however, she would not get the chance to work alongside her idol, as he died before she got a chance for him to acknowledge her existence. This left Lucine devastated, with a struggle to figure out what her purpose now was. She spent so long with the goal of meeting and impressing Starline, that she hardly focused on any other goal.

♡ Her catchphrase has always been "Presentation is key", which alludes to her always making sure something is presented in a certain way. Her outfits are stylish, and her lab is under her cottage she lives in - hidden out of plain sight. But this even nails down to how she acts. Her "cute" appearance as a deer (mobian) leads no one to suspect she could do harm, which she could use to her advantage in some cases to get what she wants if the person is naive enough. So, the presentation goes from the way things look down to the way she acts.

♡ This helps her manipulate some mobians easy enough. She acts innocent, and it seems like she has no ill intentions towards you - even going as far as making it seems like she's trying to help you - but she does this to get exactly what she wants in a way that isnt obvious.

(Dont mind this old sketch, this is from a RP I did with this character ages ago u-u ... I used to RP lots, believe it or not. But anyways.)

This is Carrie (C.A.D officially)! Lucine's most prized creation! She called the 'Caretaker Assistance Device', in which she uses to assist her in whatever Lucine needs! Sometimes its organizing the lab, sometimes its helping with experiments, or sometimes its planning. Things like that! Carrie however, cannot fight. Lucine had programmed her to help, not battle. Despite this, Carrie has her own sentience kind of. She can speak on her own willingly and do things to her own accord. She is programmed in a certain way to help Lucine, but other than that, she pretty much kind of has her own will.

Im just gonna throw her old ref sheet here hehe... (just so you guys can get an idea of her colour palette, too. Her colour palette hasn't changed)

Believe it or not, she used to have smaller ears! Until I realised she doesnt look like a deer all that much and changed them.

Another invention of hers is also backpack wings; mechanical wings attached to a backpack! They help her fly,,, somewhat?? Its moreso for gliding around.

Truth be told she is also 3'6. Short motherfu- /j

revolutionary girl utena – heavy breathing panting crying what a fucking roller coaster nanami the child you are anty the child you were utena the child you choose to be – just one of the true masterpieces of all anime. took a few episodes to realize that this show understood tone and comedy perfectly and wasn’t just a wonky children’s show and by golly! the nanami in season 3 gutted me unlike anything else

attack on titan: final season (for real this time) – decent conclusion to maybe my favorite anime of all time

school rumble – so goddamn funny and i cared about every goddamn character. it’s witchcraft!

trigun – good ole saturday morning cartoons

golden kamuy s3 – how does it keep getting better???!?!

fruits basket – i was a certified hater after s1, but slowly but surely i gave into the melodrama. akito and shigure were EVERYTHING

nana – the most disappointing ending of all time! for one of the greatest anime of all time. manga pls save me!!!

rascal does not dream of bunny girl senpai – i’m embarrassed. i cried.

princess tutu – expressionistic, dedicated to storytelling, tremendously kind-hearted. you have to let it move you

blue lock – i’m officially a sports anime girlie

cyberpunk: edgerunners – this was just so slick!

chainsaw man – nothing needs to be said here

yamada-kun to lv999 no koi wo suru – adult romance that hasn’t been stripped of all conflict and maintains momentum nearly to the end

oshi no ko – my expectations were non-existent after ep 1 but then it crept up on me. i can’t even fully put my finger on what works so well? but it does! it knows when to take itself seriously and when to be nonsense.

demon slayer s3 – best season of demon slayer to date, i actually cared

durarara!!x2 shou – this is a confession. my inner edgy teen loves durarara. i appreciate huge casts of characters acting in opposition in atmospheric tokyo.

gintama – i finally finished gintama one of my favorites of all time. the end pulls all the threads together but it does so at the expense of the laughs so loses some points

chihayafuru – amazing background anime. just consistently fun and engaging.

perfect blue – i feel stupid and uncultured to not give this a 10

vinland saga – askeladd is so hot wow

buddy daddies – funny and sincere in degrees but a truly annoying little girl character

serial experiments lain – god you’ve gotta appreciate the wild swings creatives were taking in the 90s

durarara!!x2 ten

great teacher onizuka – ugh he’s a creep but also heh he’s funny

trigun stampede – they yassified them!

mob psycho 100 s3 - meandered a bit but the characters are forever favorites

to your eternity – the first 3 arcs are extraordinary. march is one of the great child characters of all time. the end drags.

zom 100 – crazy good first episode that earns its premise and then a slow descent into mediocrity; cool colors though!

terror in resonance – utterly forgettable

dororo – way too long with way too many hit or miss episode arcs

bungou stray dogs s4 – the cracks are showing but the rampo backstory is dope

lycoris recoil – those cute girls shoulda been lesbians

classroom of the elite – is it edgy? yes. are the quotes frustratingly misused? oh yes. is it fun? ugh yeah actually

romantic killer – pretty cute and the edge of danger at the end really sells it

free – solid watch but it left my brain like sand in a sieve

wolf’s rain – what passes as deep when children are your primary audience

hell’s paradise – boring and i liked the manga so.

durarara!!x2 ketsu – the conclusion falls short

land of the lustrous – bold but was too slow for me

tomo-chan is a girl! – sometimes funny but the conceit does not justify 13 episodes and it loses steam fast

mushishi – some of the vignettes were beautiful but felt repetitive

bleach: thousand-year blood war – sleek, hype, plagued by all the old bleach problems

no game no life season 1 - confused that this was such a phenomenon when it came out. it’s fine i guess.

Alchemy of Souls Part 2 ★★★★★ - I was worried with this one when they "recast" it that I wasn't going to like it, but it was gripping all the way through. I highly recommend the whole thing!

Glory  ★★★★★ - This one should be coming with all kinds of trigger warnings. It's a revenge drama about a girl who was brutally mutilated via school violence. If you, like me, love a good FAFO story give this a go. If you're even mildly squeamish, maybe don't.

Go Ahead ★★★★★ Go Ahead is... an acquired taste. It's found family, and it's coming of age, and it's love triangle and it's breathtaking beautiful. It examines different family dynamics and what it means to choose your family and what it means when your family doesn't choose you. All of that said... it is also a little bit about dating your step brother, and I know, okay, I KNOW, but if you just trust me on this, it's only a tiny bit weird and then it's not, and you're rooting for these maybe a little bit incestuous but not really, idiots.

Be My Favorite  ★★★★★ This thai BL is not your typical coming of age, falling in love, enemies to lovers, story. Instead we have time travel, and the butterfly effect of the consequences of our actions. Gotta be honest, I'm a total ho for sci-fi tropes and this was done well enough that it rocketed into a favorites of 2023 spot before it was half finished.

Hidden Love  ★★★★★ Come cancel me, Tumblr, I'm ready because one of my absolute favorite tropes is the *dun dun dun* age gap! In this drama a young girl falls hard for her older brother's best friend, and you get to watch as their relationship changes and grows as they mature. There is no hanky panky or even interest in our female lead before she comes of age but if you're a puri-teen steer clear, you won't have a fun time. My favorite part of this drama was actually the relationship between siblings, which felt much more authentic than many portrayals I've come across.

My Beautiful Man S2 ★★★★★ The second installment in this series delivers! There's angst, there's humor, there's *eyebrow waggles*. I'm a tiny bit obsessed with Hira and I can't wait for more!

My Personal Weatherman ★★★★★ Miscommunication, or as I call it, idiot plot, is the best. I know some people hate a storyline that could be resolved with less than 5 minutes of open communication between the romantic leads, but not me. Let these idiots stew in their misconceptions, let them leap tall buildings in a single misguided assumption. GIVE IT TO ME. Anyway, if you don't like that, don't watch this, but if you do, it's crack.

My School President  ★★★★★ GeminiFourth stole my heart in this cute coming of age story. It hit all the right notes, with the added bonus of Fourth! I will say normally I hate when they shoehorn music into Thai dramas (so that the stars can go on tour?) but it fit well with the plot and the soundtrack is amazing. They can be my only exception.

Eli & Zoe - Wake the Dead

I reached out to the lovely and talented @bayleedrawsx on Friday to see if she could do a Halloween piece for me. (Nothing like waiting until the last moment!) She graciously accommodated me, and provided this adorable result the very next day!

Initially, we had Eli a little more annoyed by Zoe (Children!) But how can he not be charmed by her... even if he's trying desperately not to be. Uncross those arms, Eli, and let yourself have some fun!

UPDATE: The drabble turned into a fic, and the fic took a bit of a turn, so we added a crown on Eli after the fact. Both versions are so darn adorable I'm leaving them both up for you to see. Thank you, Baylee; you're the best! :)

Book: Wake the Dead (First Halloween after Solstice) Pairing: Eli Sipes x F!MC (Zoe Rivera) Rating: Teen Words: 1700 Summary: Eli may be the only one old enough to remember celebrating Halloween, but that doesn't mean he's getting into the spirit. Then, he's a little bewitched. A/N: Participating in @choicesflashfics, the prompt is highlighted in bold in the fic. Also participating in @choicesmonthlychallenge, Flufftober (Holding hands, promises), and Spooktober (Witch, Halloween).

Those who have read the story will be familiar with some things, like when Zoe teased Eli about being a prince in the Ironmount colony, or when she referred to him as Mr. Army-Navy Store. But you should be able to understand, even if you haven't read the story.

“Oh my gosh! It’s chocolate!” Angel beamed as she ran into the room. “Tell me you got more chocolate!”

“Nope, better!”

“Better than chocolate?” She doubted. “What could be better than chocolate?”

“Munitions,” Eli muttered, earning him a smirk from Troy.

“I said this was fun, Eli. What about munitions would be fun?”

“Their ability to keep us alive?”

“He has a point,” Zoe chuckled.

“Yeah, but what’s the point of surviving if we don’t have some fun once in a while? Now, settle down, youngsters; Uncle Troy has a story for you.”

Dirk rolled his eyes. Tired of the theatrics, he stood up to open the box, but Troy wouldn’t allow it. “You do realize that you’re only older than two people here, right, Uncle Troy?”

“Irrelevant. Because my life experience has brought me great knowledge.”

“Oh, boy…” Eli muttered as Angel grew increasingly impatient.

“Can you just tell us what it is!” She demanded.

“I remember when patience was a virtue,” Troy scolded with a shake of his head.

“Troy! You’ve never been patient a day in your life,” Zoe teased. “Now get on with it.”

“Geeze, even you!? Wow. So listen, do any of you know what tomorrow is? Uncle Troy does! Tomorrow is Halloween!”

“I’ve heard a little about Halloween,” Angel admitted. “But I don’t know much about it.”

“Back in the old days, it was a holiday where children would put on costumes and go from home to home trick or treating… essentially extortion for Candy,” Zoe laughed. 

Eli let out a little snort. “That’s a good way of putting it.”

“Wait!” Angel’s eyes widened. “So there could still be chocolate?”

“Negative,” Troy frowned, “but I have a few bottles of bourbon stashed away, you know, adult treats… and now we have a box full of….” he paused dramatically before removing the lid.

“Costumes!!!” Zoe shouted.

“Yes,” her best friend beamed. “ And just in time for Halloween!”

“And this is helpful, how?” Dirk asked.

“Well, it may not be munitions or chocolate,” Zoe smiled, “but come on, Troy is right. If we don’t have a little fun every so often, we’ll go mad. I hereby decree that, barring any zombie nonsense, we have a Halloween party tomorrow!”

“From what I understand, zombies may have been welcomed at such an event in the old days,” Shanon chuckled.

“That’s because they weren’t the real variety,” Eli injected, getting a far-off look in his eye.

“Do you remember celebrating Halloween as a child, Eli?” Zoe asked.

“I do. David and I used to get dressed up every year, and yes, we always came home with a haul of candy.”

“It sounds like so much fun!” Angel enthused.

“I guess,” Eli shrugged. “For kids.”

Troy patted Eli on the back. “Well, there is no age limit on having fun, Grumpasaurus! And Zoe has already declared that we will be celebrating. So, if I were you, I’d dig into that box before everyone else goes through it. You don’t want to end up with just any old costume, my friend.”

“Thanks, but pass.”

“Pass?” Zoe questioned as she anxiously pulled items out of the box. Stopping to place a tiara atop her head and a feather boa around Shannon’s shoulders.   “Why would you pass! This is so much fun!”

“Then you have at,” Eli shrugged. “But I have things to do.”

Zoe stopped for a moment and watched as Eli walked away, but Angel quickly brought her attention back to the box of pure escapism that seemed to cast a bright light through the lodge. Over the next hour, the friends felt like they had taken a trip back in time as each pretended they were fairy princesses, pop stars, wizards, kings, and queens. 

Shannon watched as Troy, dressed like a prima ballerina, pirouetted across the floor and fell back into the could in a fit of giggles.

“It’s really a shame Eli didn’t stay for this,” she stated.

“Well, I know he had a pretty busy day,” Zoe assured. “We’ll make sure he has fun at the party tomorrow.”

The next night arrived, and though the party was several hours away, Zoe couldn’t contain her excitement. All her duties attended to, she snuck off to her chambers and began dressing for the event. She placed a witch’s hat on her head as she spun around the room, watching the reflection of her black skirt swirling around her in the mirror. 

She knew she and Ana had dressed up for Halloween with their fathers as children, but she had no memory of it. This may have sparked sadness in the past, but she had learned so much since then. Zoe was intent on living life to its fullest, not just for herself but in honor of those she lost. Fighting was a tribute to them, but so was living.

She was so lost in her rapture that she didn’t hear the knock on the door. A few moments later, someone rapped their knuckles against it again.

“Come in!” Zoe sang, refusing to stop twirling around her room. But with one crazy spin, she lost control and nearly went barreling into Eli. 

“I’m sorry,” she giggled. “I was just.”

“I know what you’re doing,” he stated.

“And I know what you're thinking,” she pouted. "You're thinking I'm such a child!"

Eli attempted to keep a straight face, but the hint of a smirk on his lips was all she needed to confirm she was right.

"Don't profess to know what I'm thinking," he sneered, quickly losing any chance of composure when her delicate fingers began to tickle at his ribs.

"Hey, what are you...."

"Getting you to lighten up, old man!"

Eli grabbed her hands, putting an end to her playful assault. His dark eyes fixed on hers. The amber flecks seemed to come alive when she was this happy. 

"You understand that I'm only three years older than you, right?"

"Yeah," she shrugged. “But those are dog years!"

“Dog years,” he actually chuckled. “Are you insinuating I’m a dog?”

“If you are, you’re not a very well-behaved one,” she smirked. “You’ve never let me put you on a leash!”

“Oh boy,” he mumbled before plopping down on Zoe’s bed, his back resting against her headboard. He seemed lost in thought for a moment, his face softer than usual, then he let out a little snort. “Now, that would be a costume. Wouldn’t it?”

Giggling, Zoe jumped onto the bed, snuggling up beside him. “We’d never hear the end of that,” she confirmed.

Eli brushed a strand of hair behind Zoe’s ear and looked at her with a wan smile. “You’re going to force me to wear a costume tonight, aren’t you?”

“Eli Sipes!” She snapped, “I’m not about to force you to do anything. But I hope you’ll come and have fun, no matter how you’re dressed.”

“You know, every time I think I’m close to finally figuring you out, you end up surprising me.”

“Eli,” she whispered, taking his hands in hers. “Why does that surprise you? I wouldn’t force you to wear a costume any more than I’d want you to force me not to. I want you to be you. Your best you, sure, but I never want to change who you are. If costumes aren’t your thing, then they’re not your thing.”

“You’re pretty special,” he said, brushing his thumb against her cheek. “You know that, right?”

“Of course!” Zoe answered teasingly, “And if you should ever forget it, I’ll remind you.”

Cupping her cheek in his hand, he sat up to bring his lips close to hers. 

“You never have to worry about that,” he assured, with a soft, comforting kiss.

Later that evening, the party was just starting. Zoe was checking on refreshments with Shannon in the great room when she caught a glimpse of Eli from over her shoulder. She smiled and gave a little wave, but she chuckled inside.

I guess I could always say he’s Mr. Army-Navy Store, she giggled silently.

But she had meant what she said; all that mattered was that he was there, and she hoped he’d have fun. The rest was irrelevant. She was going to join him, but Troy called for help in the kitchen, and she saw that Angel had commandeered Eli’s attention. So she went on her way, knowing they’d join up later.

“Elijah Sipes!” Angel scolded, dressed as an artistic interpretation of a bumble bee. “I’m manning the door, and I am not letting anyone in without a costume! Now there’s not much left, but….”

“I think I’m passing on the costume, Angel.”

Crossing her arms, she narrowed her eyes at her friend. “Is Zoe aware of this?”

“She is,” he half smiled. “And she just wants me to be comfortable being me.”

Shaking her head with a shrug, Angel surrendered. “OK, then. You know, I love it, and it drives me mad when she’s like that,” she giggled. “Right now, it’s mostly driving me mad. Because I was dying to see you in the costume I put aside for you.”

“And what costume would that be?” he asked.

“A medieval prince, of course!”

“Oh, of course!” Eli said with a roll of his eyes, “because that just screams Eli.”

“It does,” Angel insisted with a nudge of her shoulder. “You don’t remember, do you?”

“Remember what?”

“Back in Ironmount, when Zoe was about to fight. She teased you about being dressed as a fairy prince.”

Eli rocked back and forth on his feet with a chuckle at the memory. “Yes, and I believe the word I used to describe it back then was ridiculous.”

“Mmm-hmm,” Angel hummed.  “And you also said you didn’t need a costume to sweep her off her feet if I remember correctly. Well, you proved yourself right on that.”  Angel took the costume from the hangar and put it back in the box for someone else to use. “I just thought it would have been funny, that’s all.”

Eli rubbed the crown lying on top of the pile with his thumb, appearing deep in thought. 

“I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to wear this,” he said, placing the item atop his head.

“Really!” Angel gasped! “Should I get the silk shirt and the cape too?”

Eli turned around, the crown askew on his head and half-smiled.

“Angel, don’t push your luck.”

so. ehehem. this is a little bit of a surprise actually but im kind of sort of maybe JUST maybe...

...planning a zombie apocalypse webcomic? (OOPS)

its nothing solid yet and its nothing confirmed! it was just a little plot bunny that emerged from one wacky and long conversation i had w a few ppl in the collidisc and got me SOOO obsessed that i decided to take the leap and try my hand at making a comic series!

the fella i just posted earlier is a 17 year old special-infected 'zombie' named 'Perch' ! they're a silly little guy and one of the main characters of my planned webcomic — along with their two besties whos names i cannot yet reveal 👁 perch is a teenager who was caught in a mall right as the zombie apocalypse hit and was swept up into a rag-tag group of teenagers who share one thing in common:

gifted kid burnout syndrome

together, this group of suspiciously talented teenage proteges learn to survive the world after its zombification, while also maybe healing along the way.

perch themself is a very happy go lucky and mischievous kid, often being the one in the group who makes the most jokes and lightens the mood with a prank or two whenever the going gets tough. however, perch is also a teen with an extreme martyr complex, so one day an incident occurs that changes them forever when they get run over by a large horde of zombies.

surprisingly not dead, perch learns that they are actually 'immune' to the zombie virus and thus did not lose their life despite being swamped. unlike most "immune characters" in zombie media however, perch does NOT gain any special powers or superhuman abilities. no super healing ability, no strength, not even not getting attacked by other zombies! they still get chased by zoms' that havent already tried biting them, and thus explains all the bitemark scars they have all over their body.

using their newfound immunity from zombie bites and knowing that they are one of the only people in their survivalist group that do not have a certain chance of death every time they go out alone, perch becomes one of the main scouts and fighters of the small group.

if you think giving one of the most self sacrificial and wreckless members of a group a special power that allows them to throw themselves into even RISKIER situations is a bad idea...

well. you'd be right!

Welcome!!! As my oh-so-clever title says, this blog is for my own writing/art, which mostly focuses on the My Hero Academia manga, aka my comfort read during the COVID times. I don’t know anyone IRL who reads it, so I AM HERE!! *** Spoilers abound! I post about all official sources, including Vigilantes/Illegals, School Briefs, the anime, etc. (although the main manga is my true love).

My ask box and messages are currently open. Ask/message away on MHA or any of the series below (I’ll also answer about my own headcanons/ships/etc, but I don’t do ship wars). Also, while I read leaks and do a reaction post immediately after, I do not look at leaked pages or read unofficial translations until AFTER I read the official chapter.

Note: I’m multi-ship friendly and an LGBTQ+ ally, but as an older fan with my own teen kids, I personally don’t speculate or post about the sexuality of teens, or about teens in sexual relationships. I’m not judging if others do, but I won’t make it creepy on my end. When it comes to teen romantic relationships, I stick to mild speculation based on what is expressly, overtly shown in canon.

Favorite hero characters: The origin trio, of course, but my heart lies with All Might, Aizawa, Present Mic, and Fat Gum. (What can I say, I’m old and I like the grownups.) Shoutout to Iida, Amajiki, and Monoma. Kaminari, Kirishima, and Ashido have great energy. I want to love Ochako too, but I don’t love how the “crush” storyline consumed her for so much of the story.

Favorite villain characters: Twice, Shigaraki, Stain, Spinner, and Dabi….and I’m REALLY enjoying the post-PLF war AFO development too. Shoutout to Compress and Toga. I loved seeing the LOV stomp Overhaul and Re-destro (though I’ve come to really love the quirk Overhaul).

Favorite side characters: Fuyumi, Ms. Joke, Officer Sansa, Makoto, Burnin

Influences/stuff I like other than MHA:

I LOVE Avatar: The Last Airbender, Legend of Korra, Dragon Prince, Castlevania, Arcane, Lore Olympus, Gravity Falls, Owl House, MLP:FiM, Umbrella Academy, The Boys, and pretty much every Spider-Man incarnation imaginable. Plus the 90s X-Men cartoon and the new X-Men ‘97!!

Also loved the manga/anime for Vinland Saga, Mob Psycho 100, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Monster, Jujutsu Kaisen, Spy x Family, Zom 100, Pluto, and Dungeon Meshi. Kaiju No.8 is cute too! Plus Attack on Titan & Demon Slayer, which have gorgeous animation.

The MCU, Star Wars, and Batman (especially The Animated Series) are big influences. Also Doctor Who!

I’ve read/watched some D.Gray Man, Golden Kamuy, HxH, Fruits Basket, Soul Eater, Fairy Tail, Sword Art Online, Fire Force, One Punch Man, Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun, and Tiger & Bunny.

I don’t read as much Naruto or One Piece or Bleach as I “should.” I kinda skipped that generation? Oh, but Akira and Unico are amazing. I dig Astro Boy and Black Jack too.

My 2019 Writing Roundup

Not to get too New Age-y, but 2019 felt like a very ~transformative~ year for me. I turned 30, got a literary agent, and became a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. After feeling like I’d hit a plateau in my late 20s, it was nice to experience a sense of forward momentum again, even if the lack of financial stability in this career is a constant background stress. Still, on the whole my sixth year as a full-time freelancer felt like a time where I kinda, sorta figured out what I’m doing. Instead of struggling in murky waters, I’m at least actively swimming in them.

I continued to write for The A.V. Club, The Spool, and Consequence of Sound, plus took on new outlets in The Verge and Polygon. I also had an article about romantic comedies published in Southwest Airline’s in-flight magazine and was asked to talk about Hallmark Channel Christmas rom-coms on Canadian radio. Speaking of rom-coms, 2019 was the second year (and first full-year) for When Romance Met Comedy, and I feel like the column really came into its own this year. It’s by far the biggest undertaking of my career (I’ve covered 47 films in total so far!), and I’m really excited to continue shaping its voice in 2020.

Beyond finding a regular fitness routine and seeing Cats onstage for the first time, the biggest personal project I undertook in 2019 was immersing myself in the world of film and film criticism—something I started in mid-2018 and really amped up this year. My goal was to watch 300 new-to-me movies this year, and I wound up watching 355! (Including 129 new releases.) Regular access to CFCA screenings and screeners allowed me to be a bigger part of the film critic conversation than I’ve been in the past, which was exciting. I also tackled a bunch of blindspots from the past decade and put together a list of my 50 favorite films of the 2010s, which you can see right here:

Over on the TV side of things, I bid farewell to the Netflix Defenders universe with binge-review coverage of the final seasons of The Punisher and Jessica Jones. Those Marvel binge-reviews were a big part of my early career, so seeing that universe come to a close was bittersweet. It’s always nerve-wracking when a semi-regular assignment ends, but I’m hopeful that new projects will pop up to take its place.

Putting together this year-end retrospective also made me realize I was on a lot of podcasts in 2019, including jumping in as a regular guest on the Cinematic Universe podcast in the latter half of the year. Podcasting is something I really enjoy (I find talking so much easier than writing!), and I’d love to do more of it in the future.

In the zombie-infested, post-apocalyptic America where Benny Imura lives, every teenager must find a job by the time they turn fifteen or get their rations cut in half. Benny doesn't want to apprentice as a zombie hunter with his boring older brother Tom, but he has no choice. He expects a tedious job whacking zoms for cash, but what he gets is a vocation that will teach him what it means to be human.

I thought it was a cool zombie book. Not very original though. It’s like all other zombie books out there. This kinda reminds me of a teen version of the show The Walking Dead.

I like the trading card pictures in the inside cover of the hardback books. It’s cool to have an idea of what they look like in the story.

Benny was a good kid. He was dumb most of the time though. lol I like how he grew throughout the book. His way of thinking changed when he experienced things; like on his brother, the bounty hunters, his parents.

Tom was an amazing person and brother. I really liked him. He was a badass.

The lost girl’s story was a sad one. She was young when all this happened. I definitely wouldn’t have survived the way she had.

I like the tricks to keep from biting zombies like certain clothing and smells. 

There was an unusual sight for them in the Ruin. I wonder what comes of that? It’ll be interesting to see how that plays out. 

All the bad guys got what they deserved! I can't believe some of the stuff they did. Geez. 

Six months have passed since the terrifying battle with Charlie Pink-eye and the Motor City Hammer in the zombie-infested mountains of the Rot & Ruin. It’s also six months since Benny Imura and Nix Riley saw something in the air that changed their lives. Now, after months of rigorous training with Benny’s zombie-hunter brother Tom, Benny and Nix are ready to leave their home forever and search for a better future. Lilah the Lost Girl and Benny’s best friend Lou Chong are going with them. Sounds easy. Sounds wonderful. Except that everything that can go wrong does. Before they can even leave there is a shocking zombie attack in town. But as soon as they step into the Rot & Ruin they are pursued by the living dead, wild animals, insane murderers and the horrors of Gameland –where teenagers are forced to fight for their lives in the zombie pits. Worst of all… could the evil Charlie Pink-eye still be alive? In the great Rot & Ruin everything wants to kill you. Everything…and not everyone in Benny’s small band of travelers will make it out alive.

I liked the entries to Nix’s journal about what to make of the Zoms

This book was told through so many people - Lilah, Chong, Sally, Tom, and maybe others I forgot but mainly Benny

Benny may not be quite like Tom when it comes to surviving but his quick thinking saved him many times. I’m kinda surprised he hasn’t died yet lol He’s had so many close calls.

Tom = amazing

Nix = annoying. I get where she’s coming from but come on,  she was so bitchy all the time. Benny was trying but she wouldn’t let him help.

What Chong did and went through terrifying. I was shocked. He seems like the most of not surviving on his own lol

More bounty hunters show up. Some good (they were cool) and mostly bad (those jerks). How is the world mainly zombies and bad folks popping up left and right? I liked how some were connected to the first book’s villain. Again they got what they deserved. 

I like that it showed even the strong can have freak outs and mental breakdowns.

That ending was so sad.

To survive, each of them must rise to become the warriors Tom trained them to be.

It was an alright read. I didn’t think it was as good as the previous two. The book just dragged for me. I’m kinda burnt out on this lengthy paged series. I’m taking a break now from them.

I like that the zoms are different. I like what they can do and the list of different types that were on the research they found

The zombie virus is mutating. It’s kinda scary what has it now 😱

A new set of crazy zombie loving people 🙄 They are completely delusional

Benny is surviving better lol. He’s almost half way to being a badass lol

I like that Nix’s journal entries are more about what Tom taught them’

They found out more about the jet and it’s not really what they expected

Twist when it comes to Chong 😱 Like wut?!?!

I like that everyone’s grieving one major character from the last book and how they are coping with it

I’m interested how the rest of the series plays out but I just need a break right now.
