the strength it must have taken for illario to not immediately go full 'lmao since when have you even had a kiss hello lucanis' sibling violence mode during the café talk. inspirational. rook and lucanis really were doing all that right in front of his salad huh
#lucanis is being SO cringe with that line right out there in public and I would die for him. it's just such a weird thing to say#tbf if anyone in the world is used to the insane things lucanis says and would go 'yes yes lucanis waxing poetic about coffee#in ways normal people reserve for trying to get in someone's pants (the roast won't fuck you lucanis)#we've all heard it' like it's all normal I suppose it would be illario. and also he's too busy with the 'shit fuck shit he's not dead#he's not dead of the family members 'supposed' to be dead we're at two definite failures out of two and woe me if the twain should meet#if that IS a demon in there it sure talks exactly in the same bizarre way only my cousin does#does that mean anything what the fuck do I do who do I kill about this' internal monologue I guess#dragon age#dragon age: the veilguard#dragon age: the veilguard spoilers#dragon age spoilers#illario dellamorte#lucanis dellamorte#rook x lucanis#rookanis#I mean he does very much say that to a non-romancing rook too which only makes it all the more delightfully odd#is it a very lucaniscore way of testing the waters. is it just how he always talks about coffee. many plausible approaches here#no one forced him to bring up kisses and 'you should try it' out of the blue like that is all I'm saying. he could have acted normal#(theoretically)#i feel there are reasons to read some stuff into it lol#lucanis when rye says he prefers tea: it's so over cautious overture I don't quite understand myself yet gently rebuffed#lucanis when rye takes him up on the 'so what should a first kiss be' theme: oh we're so back!!!! wait. what. what do I do now#what is this#it's kind of really sweet that rook answers with their own playfully florid beverage based barely hidden metaphor at the end too#matching freaks and having fun with it#as far as lucanis is concerned rye's only true flaws are 1) prefers tea to coffee (oh well. no one can be perfect. cross-cultural love#can conquer all even in this) and 2) weird taste in interior design (did we really HAVE to bring your 15 foot tall corpse statues#with us home rook. I can understand a tasteful skull here and there but this seems excessive. well if it makes you happy I guess)

Rook is SO freaking cute as Hermes!!! His silly little laugh is now playing on loop in my head 😂 Your art made me look into the guy and apparently he and Ody are related (Hermes is his great? Grandpa? I think) and that made me SO curious for this!
Is Rook Leona's funny grandpa in your AU or is he just helping the guy out because LeoVil is his OTP?
Love everything you've done, you absolute queen! 👑 🦁

Obviously the funny grandpa 😌

Alrighty I can't stay silent anymore cos this has been itching at me too much. I get it, I promise, I understand how it feels like in Coffee with the Crows Lucanis gets something sweet and thoughtful for all the companions but not for Rook. I get it. I do.
BUT!!!!!!
I don't think that's actually true. From a Watsonian perspective, I think there's two things at play here:
1.) Rook, as team leader, is The Busy One who is always running around doting on others and doesn't really have hobbies/obvious preferences like the other companions do. The only ones stated are chocolate and card games, and even then they're not very overt. It is extremely likely that Lucanis has, up to this point, been unable to clock what sort of things Rook would like.
2.) Because of the first point, I'd wager that one of the myriad reasons Lucanis invites Rook to accompany him is that he's trying to figure out what Rook likes. Unfortunately for him, Rook doesn't give any clues as to what they like while the two of them are wandering the market stalls. The first instance he gets wind of a preference is when they're at Café Pietra and Rook says what their favorite drink is, which Lucanis immediately commits to memory.
For these reasons, I think that Lucanis did in fact purchase something for Rook on that outing: the ingredients for their favorite drink. It's less obvious if Rook likes coffee, but given that Lucanis will fairly frequently offer to make Rook a cup of their favorite drink when they wander in the kitchen, I think it's clear that he purposefully made sure to keep enough coffee/tea/cocoa on hand just for Rook. THAT is his gift to Rook. He just isn't able to get it for them until after he knows what their favorite drink is. And knowing him? He probably stocks up quietly when Rook isn't there because he's not the type for grand gestures. He's a man of thankless acts of service who doesn't want attention for the nice things he does for people. He'll just quietly make sure that a steaming mug is always ready for Rook when they need it. ❤️☕

Your Modern Au of Emmerich and Dawn gave me a funny idea.
Emmerich being a college professor and explaining to Dawn how he doesn't date students for moral reasons and stuff. And Dawn the next day bursts into Emmerich's office like, "I dropped out lets date."

i love this thank you for the inspo 😌💜

So I can't stop sharing this after realizing it myself earlier... After Rook tells Emmerich that they're a virgin, during their dinner date, and he clearly processes what is a VERY unexpected fact to him, he tells them that's okay, and you 2 can just take things slowly. :) It's sweet, right? But also... Emmrich... how fast did YOU wanna take things? Because now this man's got me convinced he was SO down bad for Rook, he wasn't gonna waste time NOT hitting it now that they're together. I'm unwell
Okay so I actually really appreciate how ambiguous they left Rook and Emmrich's sexual relationship until the coffin scene in the third act: they wrote it such that the player could headcanon that they had an intimate relationship already leading up to that scene OR it was the first time they slept together, and I think that's AMAZING.
I headcanon that my Rook (not a virgin) and Emmrich slept together for the first time the night of the dinner date, and I think that he planned the night not with the intention of seducing Rook, but with the mindset that if they were interested in moving forward with the sexual aspect of their relationship, the privacy of the Necropolis might be a bit more relaxing that the Lighthouse. It's clear that Emmrich has pulled some strings to have the gardens roped off just for the purpose of their romantic dinner, he goes above and beyond with the meal, they have a very sweet conversation about their feelings and attraction to each other, mention previous dates (or lack of), and the whole thing ends with a fade to black.
... and I'm a romantic degenerate who sighs and stares dreamily into space while twirling my hair at the thought of them making love for the first time on a bed of soft flowers in the garden, illuminated by veilfire as wisps float lazily through the air... but I digress:
Since Emmrich trusts that Rook isn't pursuing him from a place of "charming flattery" I think he takes their new relationship incredibly seriously, and part of that is acknowledging the sexual aspect of it. He strikes me very much an actions over words kind of person (hence the charming flattery remark), and given their circumstances and what they're up against, facing danger, violence and the possibility of death on a daily basis (especially daunting for him), I feel like Emmrich would be very motivated to explore that aspect of the relationship as soon as Rook was comfortable with it.
He's also older, more experienced (even if Rook isn't a virgin), and gives off the vibe that he's extremely comfortable with sex and intimacy based on the banter he has with Davrin. I think he views physical intimacy as yet another way to express his feelings for Rook and show them how much they mean to him. This man isn't sure if they're going to see tomorrow, let alone next week: he's only got so much time to make sure that Rook knows how treasured they are, so that's going to include romantic dates, deep conversations, surprising them with thoughtful gifts, and making love as often as they can get away with it. Regardless of what comes next, he doesn't want Rook to doubt for a second how much they mean to him, but he puts the choice about sex squarely in their hands and will let them ultimately be the one who makes the call as to when they're ready to explore that.
Once their relationship begins, he appears to court Rook quite ardently, with enough enthusiasm that Harding takes notice and points out that he's been mopey and distracted lately, and goes so far as to suggest that perhaps he and Rook are taking things a little fast. Even he's aware that this is moving at quite a pace, and he's clearly worried about how other people will/might perceive that given their respective ages - he probably thinks that people think he's a dirty creepy old man: a besotted fool, but I don't think he could approach Rook any other way even if he tried.
There are no half measures with this man: once he's in, he is IN. He's not fucking playing: this isn't just a casual fling that he expects to end once this evanuris business is over. It's probably why he comes off as a bit guarded and hesitant to engage with Rook's earlier flirtations: he probably puts this amount of care, vulnerability, and passionate authenticity into ALL his romantic relationships, and has probably been hurt in the past because of it.
Anyway, this has become suuuuuper unnecessarily lengthy, but I have so many feelings about this man, and I am indeed unwell too.

Rosemary for the rook flower ask game?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the Language of Flowers Rook asks
Look what have you done, anon, my longest comic ever!!! So many thanks, 'cause I had a lot of fun with this.
So! When I thought about this headcanon I made up a random summer festival or similar happening every decade where Dalish clans could meet, and then I checked up the lore and... GUYS, IT REALLY EXISTS!!!
From The World of Thedas vol 1: Most Dalish groups tend to keep to themselves. However, once every ten years, clans will congregate in a single, remote location to take part in Arlathvhen, an event meaning "for love of the people".
As some of you may know, my Rook is older than Davrin (about 8 years older), she's usually quite fine with it and made peace with the idea after an inital shock lol but well, sometimes the age difference just comes up again ;) I'm sure Davrin knows how to make her forget about it, though.

Accidentally gave my Professional Killer Rook an Existential Crow-sis after continuously picking all the non-violent choices. Perhaps adventuring with Varric helped them realize they just want to bard suave all of their problems, not rogue assassinate them. Sure, Rook relapsed and supported one violent action (let Harding shoot Solas in the face) at the beginning, but never-again'd after getting consequence'd (Harding got owchied to the face)

Some character development questions for Rook Dragon Age
Use 'em as ask game, pick and choose questions as you please, or do the whole dang thing!
How exactly did they get their nickname, and what do they think about it?
How well-qualified for their new leadership position are they really?
What's their opinion of the Inquisitor?
What's other people's general impression of Rook? How does Rook come across in conversation?
Would they rather throw hands (or spells) or talk it out?
Does Rook think the Veilguard can save the world?
... okay, the rest of the team's not listening. Does Rook really think the Veilguard can save the world?
Do they expect to actually come out of the whole thing alive?
Killing Venatori, Antaam and random mercenaries - a particular pleasure, just part of the job, or something Rook loses sleep over?
How often does someone have to fish them out of a body of water?
Do they crash on Solas' ugly green couch or do they have a bed hidden somewhere?
What do they think about their room at the Lighthouse?
What does Rook put onto the grocery list in the dining hall?
How often do they actually get a decent night's sleep?
Out of the people they met during their adventure, whom do they like the most? (Challenge mode: companions don't count)
What's their favorite spot around the Lighthouse (and Crossroads)?
How'd they deal with the fade prison?
Is Rook quite as bad at jumping as the game implies, and if yes, why?
What's their favorite outfit like?
What do they do when they have some downtime?
Biggest regret of all?
The absolute highlight of their adventure?
A place in Thedas they haven't seen yet, but would like to?
What's a lie Rook's told before, and why?
What do they do after the end of their adventure?

obsessed with the fact that if you choose the last purple option in lucanis' romance chat before going off to tearstone island ("they MOVED the MOON!!!" still in the running for the best delivery in the whole game btw it's so ineffably hilarious to me), it's rook who flinches away just a little bit (if still warmly <3) and tries to change the topic and lucanis who's steady even though he's clearly still so afraid. 'don't tempt fate'/'*the softest fucking voice you've ever heard in your entire life* I don't intend to'. pain and suffering
lucanis looking at rook and helplessly, with a wonder that verges on despair, saying 'what would I do without you?' is soooo. especially at that point in the relationship and with what's about to happen. and for whatever reason rook can't quite stay with the fact that they do mean that much to someone, that they are so reverently and so groundingly 'I want to know what your favourite food is so I can make it for you any time you want it' everyday loved, it's too much and they have to deflect from it or the fear of losing it. can say some very interesting things about them, too.
(there is also a Pattern in that in my estimation lucanis frequently responds better to inviting humour than to earnest shows of concern -- it seems to help him be more engaged/online to be offered that more neutral space to meet you in and uh 'build' the conversation around something funny together than to be confronted with compassion head-on because that clearly mostly deer-in-the-headlights him, as we also see with some of the early flirt options haha. contrast this especially with bellara, who repeatedly gets genuinely upset if you try to make light of some pressing and painful situation she's dealing with (girl I'm so sorry I'm so jestercore and I canot change this but I'll try :'( for you). I think the times lucanis reacts negatively to the purple options are much more about you siding with other (frequently more charismatic lol) people against him or throwing him under the bus interpersonally -- like seeming to go along with illario's charm offensives, or telling teia lucanis didn't want to come help out with caterina's funeral and he'd just sit alone and brood about it if you didn't force him (???!!! hello??? unprovoked and deeply unkind out of left field???? this option is so fucking MEAN and for what fhdaskjfa you're telling me there's no way for rook to be a bit of a dick in this game?)
when it's one on one conversation he consistently seems to find it quite comforting, though... which makes a lot of sense because in many ways it's how he interacts with illario, just shorn of the resentments and hidden daggers and things they Do Not Talk About but really should beneath the levity that makes it sharp. it's gone ugly between them, but I think the affectionate instinct beneath is real and goes back a long way before all of that festered -- it's a form of play he does with people he loves. and uh. not really caterina huh. notably.)
