when you're angry, all your defenses go up. the unfortunate person or thing that managed to piss you off is suddenly talking to a wall. On the inside, you're screaming and crying and cussing them out, but somehow you can't express it. you're blank. emotionless. to anyone's knowledge, you could be zoning out of a lecture. because of this, it's hard to express how you're feeling when the person asks for your thoughts. you've choked your feelings down, and they won't come back up.

@bokketo​ sent Iron-Man-as-a-mutant-superpower-instead-of-a-suit!Tony?

New backstory: It started when he was a kid. His dad screaming again about how Tony needed to grow a thicker skin, how he was too soft, how Stark men should be made of Iron. And this time, when he threw Tony’s toys, now broken, back at him, he didn’t feel it. He looked at his arm, touched the golden plate where his skin used to be, and realized his father had gotten his wish. Still, it took him years to learn how to control it as anything more than an instinct. He was twenty-six and stuck in a cave in Afghanistan, silently begging it--whatever it was--to come back, but after days of torture, after deciding, to hell with superpowers, he’d make his own suit of armor, it wasn’t until his cellmate, Yinsen, was threatened, that it came together better than it ever had before: a golden sheet of metal that covered him from head to toe. And now he didn’t need to put on the suit of armor he’d made; it came to him, assembling seamlessly around him, not bulky, but sliding into place, perfectly matched to every contour of his body. Later, when he got home, plugged JARVIS in, even thought about upgrades, they didn’t require earpieces or wi-fi; he could think it on, telepathically communicate with his AI, with any internet system, it seemed,  a sort of mental hacking protocol. With this power to help him, Tony shut down the weapon’s manufacturing in his company, eventually joined the Avengers--and the rest is history.  

New setting: Still New York/California, Tony moving back and forth across the coasts for work, settling in New York with the Avengers. 

New likes: The internet. I mean, Tony always liked the internet, but he’s now essentially plugged into it at all times, a bit like an AI.

New dislikes: The internet. It’s a dangerous place. And he still doesn’t understand most memes.

New friends: I feel like, just on principal, he’d be closer with the X-Men. 

New enemies: Metal detectors. He can’t really ever take off the armor, beep beep beep.

New look: It would be very similar to his Extremis suit in that the underarmor is stored in his bones and instantly assembles around him like a second layer of skin, making a sort of bridge between him and technology. Otherwise, when fully suited up, it looks the same as Iron Man does now.  Mun’s thoughts: Thanks to @thenamesallison​​ the idea of Tony having the mutant gene recessively--so passing it on to his daughter, but not being a mutant himself--has been floating around in my head for ages. So I guess this is what it would look like if that wasn’t the case.

and icarus said to aphrodite- so this is what i'm for. you have a distant awareness that the day you fall is the day you change. change is so very difficult, isn't it? watching everyone leave? you want the light so desperately, but you fear it. one day it will come for you. one day you will stop mourning the future and start mourning the present, and it will be peaceful.

Like it says on the tin, these are my headcanons, so tell me what you agree with and don’t agree with! 

9. What is the most embarrassing thing they have done in front of each other?

Tony and Rhodey knew each other in college, so the embarrassing stories abound. For Tony, the worst was the very first time they met. Rhodey was nice to him, so of course Tony thought that meant he was looking for sex because why else would someone be kind to him without alternative motives? He kissed Rhodey then proceeded to throw up on Rhodey’s shoes because he was so drunk. 

As for Rhodey, Tony definitely convinced him to skinny dip...only for them both to get caught...by the girl Rhodey had a crush on at the time...and all her friends. 

13. When do they realise they should get together?

Sometime after Tony sobers up and after they get used their roles as Iron Man and War Machine and members of the Avengers. When all the “newness” of their life as superheroes calms down a bit, when things stabilize, and they’re not running after one crisis after the other (though, let’s be honest, there is always something) it just sort of clicks. That, and Tony’s robots keep calling them a couple (this is canon), and after arguing for weeks that ‘we’re not together,’ and the bots keep pushing them literally into each other’s arms and asking for a picture of “the happy couple,” they kiss to shut the bots up...and then don’t stop. 

15. When they watch a film what do they choose and why? Who gets the final vote?

They rock, paper, scissors it most often. Which Tony is very good at. But Tony will complain loudly when he loses and whine until Rhodey caves and lets him pick. When Rhodey doesn’t cave, Tony will lay across him dramatically during the movie and nitpick all the scientific inaccuracies. In short, he is annoying. 

20. Where do they go on holiday?

Tony always tries to plan some very elaborate world traveling trip on a fancy plane, but Rhodey gets the final say on holidays, and more often than not, he’ll take Tony home to spend the holidays with his family. Tony absolutely loves the family atmosphere, helping Rhodey’s mom cook dinner, playing with his nieces and nephews, and their nights camped out on a twin bed, trying not to make a noise and wake his parents, like they’re teenagers all over again. It’s simple and easy and so much better than some fancy resort.

25. Why do they fight?

Tony is not good at communication, particularly if something is wrong, and he almost never asks for Rhodey’s help. This means a lot of unnecessary stress on Rhodey who want to help and is always there to catch Tony when he falls--which would be a lot easier if Tony stopped jumping off of tall buildings, literally and figuratively. Rhodey has more than enough reason to get mad/frustrated, especially when Tony drops off the radar for three days without notice. 

Tony gets mad if Rhodey finishes the cereal. 

28. Why do they get jealous?

Tony is incredibly insecure. It’s not like he thinks Rhodey will ever cheat on him and he will never act on the jealousy--like asking Rhodey where he’s been or who he’s talked to or anything else toxic like that; whatever Rhodey tells him is all he has to tell him, it’s fine--but at the end of the day, he’s just a paranoid person who can sometimes have severe mood swings, and in those lower moments, he’s just waiting for Rhodey to find someone better like it is an inevitable conclusion to their relationship. 

As for Rhodey, it would depend on how Rhodey treats Tony’s job and public persona, and I have a feeling he doesn’t hold much store by it. Tony flirts in public settings, at parties; he charms to get what he wants, and as his oldest friend, Rhodey knows its an act and means nothing to Tony--but that doesn’t meant there’s never that irrational sting of jealousy all the same. 

29. Why do they fall a little bit more in love?

When they’re silently communicating. Handing each other things before they even ask, navigating around the kitchen on a busy morning, perfectly in step because they’ve done this a thousand times before, because they know how the other ticks and have learned to lean into it and just really be partners.

Dark Stormy Blue 

Sinking ships, raging seas and tumultuous hearts, love isn't easy for you. It's a struggle, a constant inner fight of should I? Can I? Do I?
