when you're angry, all your defenses go up. the unfortunate person or thing that managed to piss you off is suddenly talking to a wall. On the inside, you're screaming and crying and cussing them out, but somehow you can't express it. you're blank. emotionless. to anyone's knowledge, you could be zoning out of a lecture. because of this, it's hard to express how you're feeling when the person asks for your thoughts. you've choked your feelings down, and they won't come back up.

this is about to be long as hell.

🍍  : how comfortable is my muse in their body? how do they feel about their height, weight, strength, and body type? how important is being attractive to them? 

Tony is the definition of “fake it til you make it.” He acts cocky as hell, but he’s extremely insecure. He was a small, nerdy kid and because he skipped so many grades (he started at MIT at 14), he was always so much younger than everyone around him, that he was wildly unpopular. At the same time, he was constantly surrounded by cameras because of his family’s celebrity status, so looks were everything. My version of Tony, specifically, is also fighting against the racist stereotype of Asian men as de-sexualized, quiet, smart guys, so it has always been very important to him to be seen as attractive, strong, and tough. Being on the Avengers, a team of super powered people and gods, Tony is also pretty insecure about being human and so trains hard outside of the suit to keep in shape and better his hand-to-hand combat. 

🍏  : how stable is my muse’s physical health? do they go for regular or semi-regular checkups by a physician? do they have any diagnosed illnesses and / or take any medication? how often do they get sick? 

Tony suffers from chronic pain due to: 

(1)  The arc reactor. In order to install the reactor in his chest, his sternum was removed and his ribs broken to make room for the battery to sit above his heart (this is why in my canon, Tony will always have the arc reactor; it is not just that without it the shrapnel in his chest will move into his heart, but that his entire chest will collapse as the bones are not fused to the metal). The reactor keeps the shrapnel from piercing his heart, but the sharp pain of having metal pieces lodged into his chest is still very present. This, along with the reactor sitting between his lungs, make breathing difficult. 

(2) His left arm. It has been broken, electrocuted, crushed, and damaged so many times in battle, it has never healed properly, and when he doesn’t think anyone is looking, he can be seen rubbing it in pain. In verses where Tony uses the infinity gauntlet, it is his left arm that is burned off completely from the snap, and therefore he suffers from phantom limb syndrome and pain from the burns around the shoulder and on his neck. 

(3) Though the iron man suit keeps hard hits/falls from killing Tony, he’s still rattling around inside of hard metal, so bad hits/falls often break bones, which the suit is then designed to cast within the armor and numb so Tony can keep fighting. After several years as Iron Man, he’s broken nearly every bone in his body and has told no one about it. 

Tony patches up his own cuts and fixes his own broken bones in his lab and very, very rarely accepts help or goes to the hospital. Because of his history as an addict, he also does not use pain medication.

🍎  : how stable is my muse’s mental health? have they been diagnosed with any mental illnesses and / or conditions? do they have any undiagnosed mental illnesses and / or conditions? do they or should they attend therapy? 

Tony 100% should attend therapy but does not. The closest he’s ever gotten was making an AI therapist, but as the AI was made and coded by him and Ultron, it contained his own prejudice. Tony suffers from Bipolar I Disorder and Alcoholism. While he is in treatment for Alcoholism, attending AA and has been sober for several years, his bipolar disorder is untreated. It was diagnosed when he was a child, but his father dismissed it, and so Tony never sought help for it afterward. This results in bouts of manic energy in which he might be awake for 72 hours or longer, working obsessively, followed by hard crashes into depression in which he will self isolate entirely. Both stages are incredibly self destructive, but the manic highs are generally seen by others as either productive (he suddenly is showing up to all his board meetings, making new inventions for Stark Industries, spitting out new brilliant ideas, etc.) or obnoxious: “People in manic episodes may spend money far beyond their means, have sex with people they wouldn't otherwise, or pursue grandiose, unrealistic plans.” Though it does not happen frequently, the manic episodes do occasionally get so bad they result in hallucinations.

Finally, Tony is usually categorized as the third smartest person in the Marvel universe, and smarter people produce less dopamine. Usually the brain protects us by eliminating impossible solutions to problems immediately, so we are less bothered by endless solutions--the scientific version of blissful ignorance. Tony’s brain, like many other geniuses, does not have this protective mechanism, so he’s always thinking through every solution to every problem, no matter how unlikely, and cannot let a problem go once it’s popped into his head. In his own words: “i’ve got a problem. actually, i have lots of problems. what i mean is, i have a certain shortcoming: an idea gets stuck in my head – a bug crawls in my ear – and it infects my thinking. it doesn’t stop until it’s consumed my entire mind.”

🍒  : how much does my muse value companionship? do they constantly keep people around them, or do they prefer to be alone often? do they have or desire to have many friends? do they see every meeting as an opportunity to make a new friend? 

When he’s manic, Tony loves to be surrounded by people. It also helps to get him out of his head, and when he was younger, he would drink a lot and throw a lot of parties to try and self medicate (see above headcanon on mental health). Since he’s gotten sober, he’s found social interaction much harder because his anxiety picks up and the suave, Tony Stark persona is much harder to fake. He’s become notorious for ditching his own parties, and his playboy reputation is built mostly on gossip, as he actually has few sexual partners. Tony is charming and knows how to wow a crowd, but it’s an act (see below headcanon about reputation). 

🍓  : how is my muse typically seen by others? does it ring true to who they really are? does their reputation matter to them? 

Tony is seen by the public as an ego maniac spoiled rich boy playboy who can’t maintain relationships and doesn’t care about anyone but himself. He encourages this because it pays well. Without government contracts (AKA weapons manufacturing), he had to find other ways to pay for the work at Stark Industries he actually cares about (i.e. medical equipment) and the Avengers and his global incubators, so he leaned into the ego and sells himself for the funds. Interviews, consults, photo shoots, you name it. If he’s smiling for the camera, it’s paying for machinery and a team that saves lives. He doesn’t need to be liked, he just needs to do his work.

I’m not going to rant too much, but this is the biggest problem with the newest Cantwell Iron Man comic run, in that his Tony is suddenly upset about his lack of recognition/angry about being unappreciated when the 70+ years of comics prior to that shows Tony is perfectly prepared to be the world’s scapegoat and see himself as a necessary evil. He would be suicidal (and sort of is) if he didn’t think his mind still had more to offer the world, and so he keeps himself alive because he pretty much thinks he’s an unlovable piece of shit in every way except for his genius, and it would be selfish of him to leave the world without giving it everything he has. If he has to be the bad guy to do greater good, so be it. 

🍋  :    what kind of diet does my muse have? do they eat regularly, or the standard 2-3 meals a day? do they have to be reminded to eat, or are they likely to remind others? do they cook, or have others cook for them? do they eat healthily, or not so much?

Tony 100% needs to be reminded to eat. The biological function that tells you you’re hungry and need food was overwritten in Tony’s brain to give more room for everything else his brain is holding on to. It’s also why he can be forgetful despite having a photographic memory (and is genetically pre-disposed for Alzheimer’s). So if he’s deeply involved in a project, he will not stop to eat, but luckily he has friends who bring him food. 

Normally, Tony’s diet is obsessively healthy due to his heart condition. He drinks a lot of green smoothies, no fried or processed foods, all heart healthy stuff. But when he’s dealing with any high-level trauma (after his kidnapping, for example, or in the comics, after Rhodey’s death), his go-to is cheeseburgers.

@bokketo​ sent Iron-Man-as-a-mutant-superpower-instead-of-a-suit!Tony?

New backstory: It started when he was a kid. His dad screaming again about how Tony needed to grow a thicker skin, how he was too soft, how Stark men should be made of Iron. And this time, when he threw Tony’s toys, now broken, back at him, he didn’t feel it. He looked at his arm, touched the golden plate where his skin used to be, and realized his father had gotten his wish. Still, it took him years to learn how to control it as anything more than an instinct. He was twenty-six and stuck in a cave in Afghanistan, silently begging it--whatever it was--to come back, but after days of torture, after deciding, to hell with superpowers, he’d make his own suit of armor, it wasn’t until his cellmate, Yinsen, was threatened, that it came together better than it ever had before: a golden sheet of metal that covered him from head to toe. And now he didn’t need to put on the suit of armor he’d made; it came to him, assembling seamlessly around him, not bulky, but sliding into place, perfectly matched to every contour of his body. Later, when he got home, plugged JARVIS in, even thought about upgrades, they didn’t require earpieces or wi-fi; he could think it on, telepathically communicate with his AI, with any internet system, it seemed,  a sort of mental hacking protocol. With this power to help him, Tony shut down the weapon’s manufacturing in his company, eventually joined the Avengers--and the rest is history.  

New setting: Still New York/California, Tony moving back and forth across the coasts for work, settling in New York with the Avengers. 

New likes: The internet. I mean, Tony always liked the internet, but he’s now essentially plugged into it at all times, a bit like an AI.

New dislikes: The internet. It’s a dangerous place. And he still doesn’t understand most memes.

New friends: I feel like, just on principal, he’d be closer with the X-Men. 

New enemies: Metal detectors. He can’t really ever take off the armor, beep beep beep.

New look: It would be very similar to his Extremis suit in that the underarmor is stored in his bones and instantly assembles around him like a second layer of skin, making a sort of bridge between him and technology. Otherwise, when fully suited up, it looks the same as Iron Man does now.  Mun’s thoughts: Thanks to @thenamesallison​​ the idea of Tony having the mutant gene recessively--so passing it on to his daughter, but not being a mutant himself--has been floating around in my head for ages. So I guess this is what it would look like if that wasn’t the case.

Like it says on the tin, these are my headcanons, so tell me what you agree with and don’t agree with! 

9. What is the most embarrassing thing they have done in front of each other?

Tony and Rhodey knew each other in college, so the embarrassing stories abound. For Tony, the worst was the very first time they met. Rhodey was nice to him, so of course Tony thought that meant he was looking for sex because why else would someone be kind to him without alternative motives? He kissed Rhodey then proceeded to throw up on Rhodey’s shoes because he was so drunk. 

As for Rhodey, Tony definitely convinced him to skinny dip...only for them both to get caught...by the girl Rhodey had a crush on at the time...and all her friends. 

13. When do they realise they should get together?

Sometime after Tony sobers up and after they get used their roles as Iron Man and War Machine and members of the Avengers. When all the “newness” of their life as superheroes calms down a bit, when things stabilize, and they’re not running after one crisis after the other (though, let’s be honest, there is always something) it just sort of clicks. That, and Tony’s robots keep calling them a couple (this is canon), and after arguing for weeks that ‘we’re not together,’ and the bots keep pushing them literally into each other’s arms and asking for a picture of “the happy couple,” they kiss to shut the bots up...and then don’t stop. 

15. When they watch a film what do they choose and why? Who gets the final vote?

They rock, paper, scissors it most often. Which Tony is very good at. But Tony will complain loudly when he loses and whine until Rhodey caves and lets him pick. When Rhodey doesn’t cave, Tony will lay across him dramatically during the movie and nitpick all the scientific inaccuracies. In short, he is annoying. 

20. Where do they go on holiday?

Tony always tries to plan some very elaborate world traveling trip on a fancy plane, but Rhodey gets the final say on holidays, and more often than not, he’ll take Tony home to spend the holidays with his family. Tony absolutely loves the family atmosphere, helping Rhodey’s mom cook dinner, playing with his nieces and nephews, and their nights camped out on a twin bed, trying not to make a noise and wake his parents, like they’re teenagers all over again. It’s simple and easy and so much better than some fancy resort.

25. Why do they fight?

Tony is not good at communication, particularly if something is wrong, and he almost never asks for Rhodey’s help. This means a lot of unnecessary stress on Rhodey who want to help and is always there to catch Tony when he falls--which would be a lot easier if Tony stopped jumping off of tall buildings, literally and figuratively. Rhodey has more than enough reason to get mad/frustrated, especially when Tony drops off the radar for three days without notice. 

Tony gets mad if Rhodey finishes the cereal. 

28. Why do they get jealous?

Tony is incredibly insecure. It’s not like he thinks Rhodey will ever cheat on him and he will never act on the jealousy--like asking Rhodey where he’s been or who he’s talked to or anything else toxic like that; whatever Rhodey tells him is all he has to tell him, it’s fine--but at the end of the day, he’s just a paranoid person who can sometimes have severe mood swings, and in those lower moments, he’s just waiting for Rhodey to find someone better like it is an inevitable conclusion to their relationship. 

As for Rhodey, it would depend on how Rhodey treats Tony’s job and public persona, and I have a feeling he doesn’t hold much store by it. Tony flirts in public settings, at parties; he charms to get what he wants, and as his oldest friend, Rhodey knows its an act and means nothing to Tony--but that doesn’t meant there’s never that irrational sting of jealousy all the same. 

29. Why do they fall a little bit more in love?

When they’re silently communicating. Handing each other things before they even ask, navigating around the kitchen on a busy morning, perfectly in step because they’ve done this a thousand times before, because they know how the other ticks and have learned to lean into it and just really be partners.

KELPIE *

A magnificent soot-black stallion stands at the water's edge. His coat is glossy and sleek, his eyes burning with unseen intelligence. He nickers softly, not in fear... in an invitation. This is the curious lure of a Kelpie. A malevolent water spirit hailing from Scottish origins. Their thick coat has supernatural qualities to it. A certain stickiness that like a spider's web, entangles the prey so the kelpie can drag its victims into the water, drowning them. The sole survivors of kelpie attacks have been those who cut off their hands or fingers in an attempt to escape from its sticky fur.   The kelpie scatters its victim's entrails around the edges of its body of water, a sort of trophy for its accomplishments. Almost as if it is proud. Proud to be the cause for so much misery. You are an enchanting individual. Whether or not you choose to speak, what you do say has those listening leaning in. You are free-spirited, wandering. Or maybe you are just running from something. Commitment, responsibility, stress. Often times it is hard to tell the difference. Dark Stormy Blue 

Sinking ships, raging seas and tumultuous hearts, love isn't easy for you. It's a struggle, a constant inner fight of should I? Can I? Do I? Feelings are hard and they rumble inside you in a dissatisfied mess that begs to be let out. Your heart screams and cries inside you and you... You can't, you won't. You're scared. And love is scary, it's hard and sometimes it just doesn't work out. People leave, people hurt, people change their minds.
