It might sound ludicrous to spend the equivalent of a small mortgage payment on shoes, but Gucci’s are flying off the shelves. Sales at its parent company, Kering (PPRUY), jumped 50% in 2018.

Kering’s stock is on fire. It’s surged 285% in the past three years, as you can see on this chart. That’s double the gains of Amazon and Microsoft over the same period.

But What About the “Death of Retail?”

As you probably know, companies like Amazon and other under-the-radar disruptor stocks are putting regular stores out of business.

More than 21,000 stores have shut their doors in the past five years, according to leading retail research firm Nielsen.

Yet online disruption hasn’t hurt luxury sellers one bit. Super-luxury companies have proven totally immune to the internet wrecking ball.

In fact, a 2018 study from “Big 4” accounting firm Deloitte found sales for luxury retailers soared 81% in the past five years!

Instead, it’s the middle-of-the-road retailers that are getting crushed.

Toys “R” Us, Sears, Bon-Ton, Borders, Circuit City, and RadioShack are all bankrupt.

Meanwhile, many other middling retailers are barely clinging to life. Macy’s (M), J.C. Penney (JCP), Dillard’s (DDS), and Nordstrom (JWN) still have a pulse, but they’re fading fast, as you can see here:

These Disrupted Stores Made One Mistake

They tried to be everything to everyone.

The “department store” business model used to work okay. Open a big store, sell everything from blouses to outdoor grills to video games. As long as the store was located in a place with enough people coming through—like a city or a shopping mall—it could do good business.

Those days are long gone. Internet shopping has blown up unspecialized, “middle-of-the-road” stores.

Meanwhile, Low-End Discount Stores Are Doing Just Fine

Discount store sales have surged 40% in the past five years, according to Deloitte.

Dollar General (DG), for example, is America’s largest dollar chain. You could have doubled your money on its stock in the past two years:

Dollar General is now the largest US retail chain by store count. It operates almost 16,000 stores—more than McDonald’s, Starbucks, or Walmart.

Revenue has shot up 145% in the past decade. And it’s not just low-income folks shopping there. According to J.P. Morgan, households earning between $50,000 and $75,000/year are Dollar General’s fastest-growing customers.

The “Middle” Is Dying

The hollowing out of the “middle” is a disruptive theme rippling across many industries.

Where will it strike next?

My long-time readers know self-driving cars will gut the auto industry like a fish. In fact, it’s already begun. The stock of America’s largest car maker, General Motors (GM), has been dead money for five years. Rival Ford (F) has plunged 42%.

Super-luxury carmakers are doing just fine though. Sportscar maker Ferrari’s (RACE) stock has surged 190% since going public in 2015!

So what should a disruption investor do with this information?

Steer clear of “average” stocks. Avoid mediocre, conventional, or “good enough” businesses.

For better or worse, the middle is dying as its lunch is eaten from above and below.

Things are bad at Sears. They’re worse at Kmart

Sears is going to have a hard time surviving its bankruptcy. Kmart faces even longer odds.

Traditional department stores, including Sears, face heavy competition from big box retailers and online competitors, namely Amazon (AMZN). Still, some department store chains — Macy’s (M) and Kohl’s (KSS), to name two — are profitable.

But the discount retail space is even tougher for Kmart. It faces competition from Walmart (WMT) and Target (TGT) at one end of the market, and Dollar Tree (DLTR) and Dollar General (DG) at the other. Both discounters are profitable and growing rapidly.

Sears and Kmart have been in a somewhat unhappy marriage since they merged in 2005 to form Sears Holdings.

Sears Holdings filed for bankruptcy last week. The company says it intends to stay in business, but experts have doubts about the long-term viability of both brands.

“In my mind, they’re both in terminal condition,” said Jaime Ward, the head of the retail lending group at Citizens Bank.

But as bad as things have been for Sears, they’re worse for Kmart.

It was still a retailer in search of a profitable market niche when Eddie Lampert bought it out of bankruptcy in 2003.

“I think Kmart was too far gone by the time Lampert took over to be salvaged unless he or someone was willing to invest a tremendous amount of capital,” said Mark Cohen, a former CEO of Sears Canada and now the director of retail studies at Columbia University. Kmart failed to keep up with Walmart and Target, he added.

Kmart was always operating at a much thinner gross profit margin, which compares sales revenue to the cost of goods. Sears had established brands, such as Kenmore and Craftsman. Kmart had to compete purely on price.

Kmart’s losses started in 2011, just as other retailers were emerging from the Great Recession. And it has closed stores, while sales declined, ever since. Sears suffered too, but the decline was steeper at Kmart.

Between 2010 and August 2018, Kmart closed more than 70% of its stores. Of the 360 stores that remained, another 110 have already closed or will close soon.

Sears Holding pulled back on advertising for Sears. The marketing budget for Kmart virtually disappeared. Kmart become an afterthought.

Like Sears, Kmart started at the end of the 19th century. Sebastian Spering Kresge opened a five-and-dime store in downtown Detroit bearing his name. The Kmart name didn’t come about until 1962, and the chain grew rapidly for several decades. It claimed the segment of the market that big box stores would eventually dominate.

Kmart became known for its 15-minute-long “blue light specials”: a store would flash a blue light and announce “attention Kmart shoppers” over the public address system. The specials started in 1965 but were discontinued in 1991, although Kmart has tried to bring the back a couple of times.

In the early 1990s Kmart went on a buying spree, purchasing Sports Authority, a majority of OfficeMax and book retailer Borders. It sold all three a few years later. Sports Authority and Borders eventually went out of business after their own bankruptcies.

Kmart, losing to Walmart and other rivals offering good prices, filed for bankruptcy in 2002. It had 2,100 stores, or about three times what the combined Sears and Kmart have today. It used that bankruptcy process to close more than 300 stores and dump debt to strengthen its balance sheet.

The two brands were never a good fit. Kmart’s own problems only distracted Sears Holdings’ top managers from their efforts to fix Sears.

Well, it's a me again. I couldn't finish the pic on time yesterday so I tried my best to commit to learn how to paint glass today, and wanted to turn the practice into a concept-art of the characters of my visual-novel (even if it's just symbolical in its cute stylization). I think my glass material didn't turn out too shabby 🤔 It was worth the attempt though! 😅

If you don't know yet, is Sears (Blue Addison) and Spamton from before when they both lived together as room-mates, because Spamton back in then couldn't afford his own flat with his dwindling savings and Sears allowed him to crash in his apartment, up until the day their circle of co-workers/friends split with Spamton, prompting him to leave behind that part of the city and one of his best friends forever 😬

The rest is history.

Commentary

Three of the most useful free Web-based online tools that I often use here at ‘Untitled’ are Camera Size’s Compact Camera Meter, Points in Focus’ Depth of Field (DoF), Angle of View, and Equivalent Lens Calculator, and the Complete Overview over the available and upcoming Fuji X-Mount lenses at Fuji X Forum, compiled and updated by quincy.

Quincy’s Fujifilm X-Mount OEM and third-party brand lenses lists are kept up to date and are drawn upon by Patrick at Fuji Rumors for articles, and I go there when I need to research current and coming X-Mount lenses for my articles.

I have been struck by how the number of third-party X-Mount lenses keeps increasing, with most of them being manual focus lenses often designed and manufactured by Chinese companies, but so far my biggest ongoing disappointment with the Fujifilm X-Mount system remains unassuaged by Fujifilm itself as well as by third-parties making native or adapted X-Mount lenses.

Other than Fujifilm’s Fujinon XF 18mm f/2.0 R semi-pancake prime lens, nobody but nobody is making a prime lens that is equivalent to 28mm in the 35mm sensor format.

This searing blindspot is not just a Fujifilm X-Mount APS-C problem; it applies to the Micro Four Thirds sensor format as well wherein Olympus does not make a 14mm lens at all and Panasonic’s Lumix G 14mm f/2.5 II pancake lens appears to have gone missing in action from many retailers.

The 35mm sensor format’s 28mm focal length and its APS-C and M43 equivalents of 18mm and 14mm respectively has been a staple of the documentary, photojournalism and street photography genres for years now including those when I relied on them on Canon, Leica and Nikon rangefinders and SLRs, but it seems that contemporary lens makers just do not give a damn.

Yes, one may wish to slap a 14mm, 18mm or 28mm inclusive zoom lens on to one’s camera as I do with my Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX8 and the excellent Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 Pro or the usually underestimated Panasonic Lumix G Vario 12-32mm f3.5-5.6 Aspheric Mega OIS collapsible zoom lens, but using those focal lengths on a zoom and as a prime lens are two very different things.

Especially if the said prime lens allows easy setting of hyperfocal distance via manual focus or manual clutch focus mechanisms like those in some Fujinon prime lenses and Olympus’ excellent M.Zuiko Pro primes and zooms.

Today I found myself back at Fuji X Forum’s Complete Overview over the available and upcoming Fuji X-Mount lenses to see if any Chinese third party lens makers have added a 28mm equivalent to their current or future ranks lately but sadly it remains no go.

There are some close but no cigar choices for non-Fujifilm cameras, such as Panasonic’s Leica DG Summilux 15mm f/1.7 Aspheric prime lens, but for now I will stick with my two M43 zoom lenses rather than fork out for yet another no-cigar substitute.

What I am really after is a decent 18mm prime lens for my Fujifilm X-Pro2 for use as my number one documentary lens.

Given the premium price Fujifilm charges for its elderly Fujinon XF 18mm f/2.0 R, no way am I going to throw good cash down that particular black hole.

Getting back to close but no cigar, independent cinema lens company Veydra lists a 19mm Mini Prime cinema lens amongst its options, and it is available with a Duclos-designed Fujifilm X-Mount that can be DIY-attached onto an M43 version of the lens.

Sigma released a 19mm f/2.8 Art lens in the M43 and Sony E mounts some years ago, but the company has never shown signs of coming out with a Fujifilm X-Mount version.

The Sigma lens is affordable but the Veydra costs over twice the price of Fujifilm’s 18mm.

Veydra’s is an excellent geared cinema lens but its greater size and wide front diameter compared to the Fujifilm and the Sigma makes it a poor choice on my X-Pro2 given I rely on the camera’s excellent optical viewfinder for documentary photography and oftentimes video too.

This ongoing dilemma would not be one if Fujifilm simply went along with their customers’ longstanding request for an updated 18mm lens but I often find myself wondering if the company even cares for its documentary, street photography and photojournalist customers.

Two X-Pro2 cameras equipped with an 18mm lens on one and a 50mm lens on the other is, in my experience, the closest one can get to a perfect two-camera, two-lens documentary photography and photojournalism set-up.

Why provide half of the equation, Fujifilm, when you could so easily give us both even if each lens might be Fujicron-style f/2.0 compacts instead of the maximum versatility of f/1.4 manual clutch focussing alternatives?

The problem of Fujifilm’s ageing, substandard Fujinon XF 18mm f/2.0 R lens

Fujinon XF 18mm f/2.0 R prime lens, regrettably much too slow to focus manually or via autofocus and its aperture ring too flakey and quirky for fast-paced professional work in stills and video, though some folks seem to like it for the quirkiness that made it frustrating for me.

Leica Elmarit-M 28mm f/2.8 Aspheric prime lens for Leica M-System cameras, for me the archetypal 28mm documentary and photojournalism lens. I want something similar for my X-Pro2.

Duclos Lenses came up with a Fujifilm X-Mount option for Veydra’s Mini Primes that can cover the APS-C format.

Veydra Mini Prime 19mm cinema lens available in Sony E-Mount, Micro Four Thirds mount and Fujifilm X-Mount.

Panasonic Lumix G Vario 12-32mm f/3.5-5.6 Aspheric Mega OIS collapsible standard zoom lens

Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 Pro zoom lens, one of the most versatile top-quality professional zoom lenses made.

Panasonic Lumix G 14mm f/2.5 II Aspheric pancake prime lens, which appears to be missing in action from most if not all retailers now.

Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 15mm f/1.7 Aspheric prime lens. Narrower than a 28mm-equivalent 14mm lens in Micro Four Thirds format, but at least it is generally available whereas Panasonic’s 14mm pancake lens seems to have vanished.

Sigma 19mm f/2.8 DN for Sony E-Mount APS-C and Micro Four Thirds. Sigma, please release this in a Fujifilm X-Mount version.

Zeiss Distagon T* 18mm f/4.0 ZM Leica-M-Mount lens. A solution for the well-heeled in combo with an M-Mount to X-Mount adapter?
