reading shino's affection story for the billionth time but this part gets me as usual,,,
Shino: I tried to teach him magic once, and he really hated it, so I got frustrated and yelled at him. And then Heath ran away. I thought he would rat me out to Master and Mistress, and I'd be chased out of Blanchett. So then I started crying. I grow nervous at the phrase, "I started crying." Shino speaks of moments of pain and vulnerability so casually, with such a straight face. He must've been beaten down so many times that crying was no big deal. Shino has the strength of a child who survived.
im not gonna get into shinos character this time but know that i love him dearly, but the akira 'growing nervous at the phrase'.... because i feel there's been an increase of akira crying throughout the series...??? i cant rmbr how often it happens in pt1 outside of them having to drink the Horrible Horrible summoning potion (which is why im hoping the anime adds a akira crying out of homesickness/shock scene) nor 1.5 (srry i only reread the murr 'did no one tell you? that no one can replace you' scene last time</3). in 2nd anni i KNOW there is one at the end cuz i obsess over it. but in pt2 there's multiple mentions of akira tearing up/crying, a couple in the same ch yeah, but theres also at least 3 separate times just in the first 8 chs...??? ofc most of akira crying is out of stress (i feel one of the clear other times was during the oz' castle event where riquet&arthur starts crying and then akira cries too), but........ there is also that line where its asked if they should continue the meeting some other time (cuz shylock just had his heart on fire) but akira denies it cuz they dont want to be seen as weak and useless or something like that.......i knoowwwww theres more akira crying/tearing up in other stories, but in the main story........... something something akiras heart that's slowly opening up (to themself). do u get what im getting at. ill make a full post about it one day. ill be back with the 1.5 scene once im at figaros pov in pt2 again
anyway that aside, 'shino speaks of moments of pain and vulnerability so casually' haunts me. shino i love u with my entire heart.........;_; i adore him & akiras conversations && his&mitiles so much....... shinos selfconfidence issues are so gaaahhhhhhhhhhh shino's such a great character man....
anyway on to the reason i always reread it
Shino: Sage. What about you? Who were you before you arrived here? Akira: Eh...? Shino: How many people listened to what you had to say before you became the sage? Shino gazes at me sharply. His words strike their mark and stab me in the chest. When I was a nobody, the only ones who listened to me were my family and friends; a small handful of people. Shino: When I was an orphan digging through the trash looking for something to eat, not a single person ever listened to me. I was a voiceless scarecrow. Even if I was on the brink of death, even if I collapsed and whimpered on the streets, people just looked at me like I was causing trouble. When I became a servant of the Blanchett family, my voice reached other people for the first time. But it's still washed away by everyone else’s voices. When I became the guardian of Sherwood Forest, travelers finally took my words seriously. Now I'm the Sage’s wizard. If I say my name, people turn around and listen to me. Because the fate of the world rests on our hands.
aurgh....shino.........
rly does get me how actively akira comments how theyre a lot more comfortable interacting with intimidating ppl now (very likely due to 1) sage 2) the fact a fifth of the sages wizards are intimidating themself lbr
Shino: Please leave. ...I don't want to hurt you any more with my words. An invisible sadness is crushing Shino's slouched back. I leave his room without a word.
this & akira commenting how shino looked more sad than they were & how they shouldve better understood his pain&loneliness....shino who just said he cried cuz he thought heath & his family would kick him out,,,,,
That gesture alone makes me feel like crying.
i take back my earlier talk. actually it still stands to some extent (stress-crier akira) but.
'why are you concerned about my happiness' GAAHHH SHINOOOOOOOO anyway both of them apologizing with a gift,,,,,shinos such a kind child man....augh the love akira has for shino as well.....akira&the younger wizards gets to me so bad man....

Opera ask games day 6 & 7!
(Super late!)
Any favorite weird/funny lyrics?
This bit from Ballo never fails to make me LOL, Gustavo: “O ciel, lo sposo suo!”.
What are some opera songs that make you lose your mind?
Lucia: Chi mi frena (the iconic sextet); Onegin: final scene; Hamlet: Ô mortelle offense! (when Hamlet drenching himself in red wine); Ballo: Il messaggio entri (the quintet is a total bop); Don Carlo: Ella giammai m’amò (THAT cello solo intro); Prince Igor: Polovtsian Dances.
Are there any Met interview moments that live rent-free in your mind?
Not really interviews but, Alagna doing a backward-roll and Hvorostovsky asking for Fleming's approval to go for it.
What's an opera production that you positively rant about for an hour and a production that you could angry rant about for an hour
Positive: Onegin (2007), with the passion of seven blazing suns
Negative: tbh, I'll just ignore any productions that are still okay with black/brown/yellow-face and cultural appropriation.
Are there any weirdly specific moments from a stream/production that you love?
Hamlet (2010): a standard baritone overreaction / Don Carlo (2010): Rodrigo stroking Carlo's hair / Ernani (2012): Carlo V being dramatic
Le Comte Ory (2011): "Moi?" / Agrippina (2020): Nero doing some exercise on stage / La Bohème (2008): respect my modesty!
Which opera production was the most visually pleasing to you?
Off the top of my head: Prince Igor (2014), Eugene Onegin (2007), Cendrillon (2018), and Parsifal (2013).
Is there any singer who changed your opinion on an opera character?
I think it'd be Jonas Kaufmann and Werther. I'd not been a big fan of his voice for a long time and the opera was too gloomy for my preference. Then I finally got to watch his Werther last year. The dark tone in Kaufmann's voice actually suits the melancholic mood of Werther and the nuanced acting brings a lot more depth to the character. His rendition of Pourquoi me réveiller is such a powerful depiction of sorrow and despair. By the end of the opera, my perception changed... and I was all tears.
Are there any productions you wish had been filmed but are only available in audio form (or not available at all)?
Remember when the Met decided not to film THIS Boccanegra?
A singer that pleasantly surprised you in a role?
Roberto Alagna in La Rondine and Carmen. I didn't really care for his voice back then, just like Kaufmann's. But his willingness to throw himself into his performance has given me a newfound appreciation of him. This man also only cried real tears on stage.
Any costume(s) that you would want to have? (+pictures if you have them!)
My costume tag really comes in handy for this question :)
Opera characters that are meant for each other and you will not hear otherwise?
Charlotte & Werther, Tosca & Cavaradossi, Tristan & Isolde, Marcello & Musseta, Susanna & Figaro, and Carlo & Rodrigo.
Opera singer that you can’t dissociate from a certain role?
Probably, Radvanovsky's Elizabeth in Devereux. I don't know if there're any still-active sopranos out there that could ever be vocally and histrionically better than her 2016 portrayal.
Opera you think is a complete masterpiece from first to last note? (or an opera that you know by heart?)
Don Carlo(s), Eugene Onegin, La Traviata, La Bohème, Lucia di Lammermoor, Un Ballo in Maschera, Tosca, Il Trovatore, Norma, and Thaïs.
Favorite conductors/conducting moments?
Fabio Luisi goes from 0 to 100 at the beginning of Act 3 of Ballo:
A unique acting choice that you cannot stop thinking about?
2017 Onegin offering Lensky his half-eaten baguette before the duel.
Battle of the productions: for an opera that was streamed in many different productions, which production do you think is the best (or do you like them all equally)?
Eugene Onegin: 2007 >>> 2013 > 2017 La Bohème: 2008 >> 2018 La Traviata: 2012 > 2017 >> 2018 Violetta/Alfredo chemistry: 2017 > 2012 Il Trovatore: 2011 > 2015
Thank you for tagging me, @opera-my-beloved xoxo

Bravo Bravissimo.
EVERYONE READING OUT OF MY HEAD PLEASE READ THIS WONDERFUL OMH AU ONESHOT BY @deluxetrashqueen!!!!!!!!!
“I realized that my attention span and writing ability is never going to be up to actual writing those one shot ideas I mentioned on your fic so I’m just going to share the one I have that I really like and think about all the time which is:
Eddie, Flash, and Andi hanging out (possibly in the Andi chapter of OMH or later. Flash still has Symby).”
Messing around, Flash loudly and off-key sings “Figaro! Figaro! Figaaaroo!” and
“What does that even mean?” Andi asked, chuckling.
“It doesn’t mean anything,” Flash said, with a shrug. “Just, like, a vocal warm up or something.”
Eddie let out an indignant sputter.
“Vocal warm up?" he spat. "It's Largo al Factotum! ”
“Uh…and that should ring a bell?”
“Figaro’s aria? The Barber of Seville? One of the most famous songs from one of the most famous operas of all time? Based on some of the most famous literature of all time? Yes! I should think so!"
Eddie huffed and crossed his arms and Flash had to bite back a giggle. Not long ago he would never have been able to picture the huge, imposing man getting so worked up about opera and classic literature.
"But what does ‘Figaro’ mean?” Andi asked.
“It’s the name of the person singing that song,” Eddie explained, seemingly more willing to accept a high schooler’s ignorance of what he saw as culturally significant works than Flash’s. “Figaro is the eponymous barber of Seville.”
“Wait so it’s just a guy singing his own name over and over?” Flash asked, admittedly playing a bit more dumb than he really was in an attempt to rile the other man up a bit.
It seemed to work, as Eddie rolled his eyes exaggeratedly.
“There are more lyrics than just that," he said. "It’s Figaro’s introduction wherein he describes his accomplishments and the merits of his work.”
“So he just comes on stage and starts yelling about how great he is?” Flash smirked at Eddie. “I feel like I know someone like that,”
Eddie’s eye roll this time was more bemused than annoyed.
“You and my old director,” he said with a small grin.
“Huh?"
At Flash’s confusion, the symbiote provided small glimpses of memories.
Pouring over pages of lyrics. Practicing pronunciation. Hours of rehearsals.
"YOU DID OPERA?!” Flash cried, as the pieces fell into place.
“What?!” Andi gasped.
Eddie made a dismissive hand gesture.
“In college.”
“You. Eddie Brock. Sang opera.”
“I did.”
“YOU. Venom. Got all dressed up in foofy costumes and sang in Italian for a million hours straight?”
“I’m not sure why this is so shocking to you two.” Eddie was full on grinning now, seeming to deeply enjoy their confoundment.
“I…I guess it shouldn’t be,” Flash admitted. “It’s just…not what I would have expected. At least…not before I got to know you better."
"Were you any good?” Andi asked.
Was incredible, the symbiote provided, radiating warmth and adoration for its former host.
“I was…” Eddie shrugged as though he was going to brush the subject off again as he had with his wrestling, but then paused.
“Yes, actually,” he said, voice becoming more serious. “I was. My director actually…wanted me to switch majors. Maybe even transfer to a theater college.”
The symbiote filled in feelings of pride. Of exhilaration. The joy of memorizing and reciting complicated lines in tricky languages. The almost magical feeling of an orchestra swelling alongside Eddie’s voice. It was incredible.
Eddie’s brow furrowed for a moment.
“It…wasn’t for me though. I quit after that one performance,” he said.
“You didn’t like it?” Flash asked. From what he felt in the memories the symbiote was providing, that seemed like the farthest thing from the truth.
“No, I…” Eddie trailed off.
The memories grew colder.
'Don’t look. He won’t be there. He’s on the other end of the country. Why would he be there? He did come to anything when it was in his own town. It doesn’t matter he has a seat reserved why did you even reserve it? Why even invite him? Don’t look. Stop looking. Stop letting your eyes wander to that empty seat every time you come on stage. Idiot. Stop looking. Stop caring. Stop. Stop.’
The director’s beaming face. An offer. A different path. A dream.
A thousand opening nights. A thousand empty chairs.
A weak smile and a polite refusal. A faked excuse.
“I just…preferred journalism,” Eddie said. “Written word is…easier.”
Detached.
Flash felt anger pool in his gut.
Carl Brock. It felt like every day Flash learned something new and horrible about him. Something new he took from Eddie. Some dream or future he stole from his own son. He hated that man. Hated him in the way he hated his own father. Bastards who couldn’t be bothered to look beyond themselves for even a second long enough to see the damage they caused to others. Who couldn’t be bothered to care even if they did.
The symbiote pressed calming thoughts into Flash’s mind.
The past now. Nothing that can be changed with anger. Just makes it hurt more.
“Do you still know the words?” Andi asked.
Eddie’s smirk returned.
“Trust me, after you memorize an entire 3 hours of Italian, it’s in your brain forever,” he said.
“Sing for us.”
Eddie blinked and turned to Flash, whose sincerity in his voice surprised even himself.
“Please?” Flash added.
“Yeah! Sing!” Andi cried, clapping with excitement. “I’ve gotta hear this!”
“It…I'ts been a long time…” Eddie said.
The symbiote rose from Flash’s shoulder, forming a small head.
“Sing for us, Eddie,” it said.
Eddie paused for a moment, then smiled softly.
“All right. It seems I’m out numbered.”

Songs to Listen to, Only When You Don’t Want to Be Constantly Happy
From time to time, music is always a remedy. I’m not good at singing, so I like to listen to people singing. In chronological order (based on my limited storage) these are some of the pieces I’d like everyone to listen to, more importantly when one does not want to be constantly ecstatic; ‘cause there are, for sure, gazillions of reasons to feel sad sometimes.
1. Safe & Sound – Taylor Swift (feat. The Civil Wars)
There was one time when I was smaller, I wanted to buy all the possible Red’s Cornetto for the sake of Taylor Swift free meet-and-greet-ticket. However, only when I was a bit—a tiny bit—bigger and understood simple sentences in English, I cried for Taylor Swift’s Safe & Sound.
“... I remember tears streaming down your face When I said I'll never let you go When all those shadows almost killed your light I remember you said don't leave me here alone But all that's dead and gone and passed tonight
...”
2. Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen (covered by Panic! at the Disco)
Classic, you might say. But this song—the movie, I mean, reminds me when for the first time I slept for at least 15 minutes in a cinema. No, it was merely because I’m not really into musical movies. As the aftermath, I found Panic! at the Disco version of the song and spent the rest of my third semester listening to it and—occasionally, hopelessly—scream:
“... I see a little silhouetto of a man, Scaramouch, Scaramouch, will you do the Fandango!
Thunderbolts and lightning, very, very frightening me Galileo, Galileo Galileo, Galileo Galileo, Figaro – magnificoo
...”
3. Bridge Over Troubled Water – Simon & Garfunkel
I used to listen to The Boxer by these guys (lie lie lie, lie lie lie lie lie lie lie lie). Then, this title came along. In our latest kontrakan, Galaz remembered The Boxer very well. Despite the fact that I knew the song from my favorite author, this somehow reminds me of Galaz. What a dear friend—so innocent, so curious, so sincere.
“...Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
..”
Bridge Over Troubled Water, I think, maybe depicts him in so many ways. There were times when I shared our kontrakan only with Galaz, ‘cause everybody went home in holidays. My troubled water. So this is how Harry feels when he has nobody around him during Christmas breaks in Hogwarts. Galaz does not remind me of Ronald Weasley, but he is one of the people I can never forget.
In our last year, we went to countless places. Spending time with him, I should be ready for all possibilities, all weirdness—I’m a weirdo anyway, so that does not bother me that much. With Galaz, I should be ready to talk about civil war while strolling around in one of our night-culinary sessions, or gender and sexual orientations in public gardens. Sometimes, it could also be slightly dark jokes in the pet market. Most of the times, swimming pools let us walked in silenced, just in perfect solitude.
Galaz enables me to define friendship as something modest, not the complicated one.
“...Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
..”
4. Stoned at the Nail Salon – Lorde
On August 10th 2021, I discreetly rent a small kos-kosan in Soekarno-Hatta to escape temporarily. Nobody knew this secret but one. When I did not come back to kontrakan, what my housemates knew was that I sometimes visited and slept over in my friend’s place. Little did they know, I wanted to share my thoughts and stories but I decided to stop doing it just because I was afraid of looking stupid and pathetic in front of them. So instead, I avoided—I avoid most people.
Whenever they dodge me with bigger questions, I’d always hid my answers with other questions—and people forgot that they asked first. People always like being asked, I remember that. I hate questions—I hate questions that can never be answered, I hate questions that I can never answer.
A year after, I now live in other city, miles and miles from Soekarno-Hatta, miles from Malang. However, each time I listen to Stoned at the Nail Salon, it takes me to that particular space—when I felt so alone, desperately suicidal, but also excited to live at the same time only to listen to more of Lorde.
To be truly honest, I do not fully understand the song (just like I do to most of the songs here), but Stoned at the Nail Salon is a song I’d always come back to whenever I need to be reminded of why would I have ever hated Malang.
“... Well, my hot blood's been burnin' for so many summers now It's time to cool it down, wherever that leads
'Cause all the music you loved at sixteen, you'll grow out of And all the times they will change, it'll all come around
...”
5. Learning – Perfume Genius
In the following months, I think I started to have issues with god. I admit that I often questioned his existence on some casual table-argument with my sisters, but it was bigger this time. I even no longer engaged in conversations involving god—cause for me, I was done doing my spiritual travel, I was done believing.
“...No one will answer your prayers Until you take off that dress No one will hear all your crying Until you take your last breath
...”
(Mum died on December the same year, and sometimes, I found no reason to believe in this entire crap but for mum: ‘cause mum would have told me so, had she still been alive. I regret that I never really talked about god with mum.)
6. Space Oddity – David Bowie (covered by Passenger)
I discovered Space Oddity in my last weeks in Malang. It reminds me of a Ziggy’s book (which was initially inspired by the song. I know my brain works reversely) titled Continuum.
“... Ground Control to Major Tom Ground Control to Major Tom Take your protein pills and put your helmet on...”
The book consisted by Ziggy’s beautiful (and ever so familiar) sketches and perfectly written lyrical narrative (if not poems). I have my favorite parts of the book, indeed, but all the pages suddenly became my favorites since I listened to Passenger’s version of the song.
I have no idea of how the universe works, just like I do to the lyrics, but sometimes it sounds hopelessly beautiful.
“... For here am I sitting in a tin can Far above the world Planet Earth is blue And there's nothing I can do
...”
7. As It Was – Harry Styles (covered by Alice Kristiansen)
“... Gravity's holdin' me back I want you to hold out the palm of your hand Why don't we leave it at that?
...”
Jelly McFish—close friend of mine introduced me to a beautiful soul who posts video cover of songs in her beautiful, beautiful, way: Alice Kristiansen. My first song from her was Viva la Vida by Coldplay. Madame McFish even broke down the lyrics when we were doing our casual phone-call one night. The song, turns out, different from the original tune, is particularly sad. Alice does justice for most of songs she sang—When We Were Young, The One That Got Away, As It Was.
“... Nothin' to say When everything gets in the way Seems you cannot be replaced And I'm the one who will stay, oh
...”
As It Was. Oh I’m grateful for learning English, hence I knew right away that this is a heartbreak song. What are better than heartbreak songs covered by Alice? Harry—and other artists whose songs I mentioned—did nothing wrong with their Styles, but Alice is just woundedly beautiful, differently melodious. She agrees that this world is pathetic and there are, sometimes, no reason to continue.
“... In this world, it's just us You know it's not the same as it was
...”
8. Matilda – Harry Styles
I read Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory while I was doing my final project in architecture, May 2021. During that hardest part of my adulting life, the book was a good short escape. But it was not until June this year, I finally read Matilda (thanks to Your Majesty Mbak Debby). Fun fact, I had been thinking my whole life that it was Mathilda with an h.
Instantly, when I discovered this Harry Styles’ new song, I could not stop picturing Roald Dahl’s Matilda. The icon of being different and most of the times: unaccepted—which I feel so related to.
“... You're just in time, make your tea and your toast You framed all your posters and dyed your clothes, ooh You don't have to go You don't have to go home Oh, there's a long way to go
...”
9. Fourth of July - Sufjan Stevens
I listened to Sufjan Stevens album Carrie and Lowell while I was finishing my group project for Perancangan Arsitektur 6 (Architectural Design 6) in college, circa late 2020. Fourth of July was one of the songs.
It was not until mum died, that I feel extremely close to the song.
“The evil it spread like a fever ahead It was night when you died, my firefly What could I have said to raise you from the dead? Oh could I be the sky on the Fourth of July?
Well you do enough talk My little hawk, why do you cry? Tell me what did you learn from the Tillamook burn? Or the Fourth of July? We're all gonna die
Sitting at the bed with the halo at your head Was it all a disguise, like Junior High Where everything was fiction, future, and prediction Now, where am I? My fading supply
Did you get enough love, my little dove Why do you cry? And I'm sorry I left, but it was for the best Though it never felt right My little Versailles
The hospital asked should the body be cast Before I say goodbye, my star in the sky Such a funny thought to wrap you up in cloth Do you find it all right, my dragonfly?
Shall we look at the moon, my little loon Why do you cry? Make the most of your life, while it is rife While it is light
Well you do enough talk My little hawk, why do you cry? Tell me what did you learn from the Tillamook burn? Or the Fourth of July? We're all gonna die.”
***
I sometimes think, what would have happened if there were no invention like music? Will we be able to bare the absence—the long quiet air? Are the feelings humankind has experienced going to feel the same?
If there were no music, the sad ones, would we have stood the pain of living, only by laughing?

———–
Meow Cafe, part 11
(part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5, part 6, part 7, part 8, part 9, part 10, part 11, part 12)
The days were passing slowly, but were hectic in their own way. Pepper was finalizing the transaction and gathering supplies for the renovation of the new and better Meow Cafe. Natasha took Oliver to his new home and sent Tony and Steve daily updates on how the orange cat was settling in (very good, he still loved to sleep in every threshold possible and Steve couldn’t help but to smile wide each time he saw Natasha and noticed that her clothes were covered in orange fur).
Summer was ending and Steve had to sit down to work and plan a new school year for his students. Tony, on the other hand, became a little anxious, wishing Meow Cafe would open sooner as staying at home for so long was getting on his nerves.
Unfortunately, it started to show.
“I am asking for the last time. Who. Did. This?”
Steve tried to arrange all the materials for the syllabus on the coffee table, deciding in which order he should put them in. He didn’t like to repeat each year the same program, as art was all about creativity and different interpretations, but he will keep it organized, just to be safe from the school director. Mr Fury could be demanding and quite unpleasant when things didn’t go according to his wishes.
“You really think you will get an answer for this, babe?” Steve asked, not lifting eyes from the numerous pages spread in front of him. Maybe he should focus a bit more on sculptures this year, still having in mind the great architecture of Rome.
“One of them will crack sooner or later,” Tony replied, crossing arms over his chest. Figaro didn’t react to accusations and was spread leisurely on one of the cat shelves, his tail swooping gently and showing that he wished that his human would stop making a ruckus and not disrupt nap time. Gizmo was also on the cat shelf, clearly lurking and avoiding Tony’s gaze. Yet, neither of the cats admitted to digging in the big potted plant near the TV, throwing black soil out and into the wooden panels.
“Get down here and show me your paws!” Tony demanded, pointing his finger to the floor for emphasis. At the scream, Gizmo hid away, and Figaro’s tail swooped with more force. It was hard to say who did it, as both cats could be guilty, even if Gizmo acted more afraid. But that was just Gizmo, always easily scared and more delicate, while Figaro had high self-esteem and believed that whatever he was doing, he was doing good. It was humans who didn’t understand.
Steve tried to not smile too apparent, and God forbid, laugh, pointing his angry boyfriend’s attention to him. Maybe he could take Tony out for the weekend somewhere. Not far, just to change the environment. And without cats. That would be the hard part, talking Tony into leaving his babies, but Steve had a feeling all of them could benefit from this. And they had to use the last moments of Steve’s freedom before school starts all over again and he would go back to teaching. Just then, when Steve moved a photo of the Triton Fountain he took during his trip, something else caught his attention. Under it, there was a photo of a cat, one that resembled a whole lot Gizmo. He found the edge of the photo, and slowly pulled the whole thing to himself, holding the last issue of the newspaper he had bought this morning and didn’t look through yet. Tony always mocked him for buying newspaper, claiming that he could find everything on the Internet for free, but Steve liked the feeling of real paper under his fingertips. Not mentioning that torn out pages, scrunched up into paper balls were the cheapest and one of the most entertaining cat toys for Gizmo and Fig, and throwing them paper balls and watching the two cats chase them around, was always fun for all of them.
Smoothening out the newspaper, Steve noticed that he was looking at the lost and found a section of the newspaper. He quickly skimmed through the column, finding the photo again and reading the text below, his eyes widening with every word. He looked back at the cat shelves where Gizmo, unhelpfully, hid away to not be faced with Tony’s wrath, but he was becoming more and more sure of it. He knew that some cats looked alike, but there were too many similar points.
“What?” Tony asked, noticing his boyfriend’s twitchy movements. “Whaaat?!” he demanded again, when Steve shook his head and folded the newspaper, hiding it away.
“Nothing!” he squeaked out. He can’t let Tony see it. Not yet. Not until he would be one hundred percent sure.
Tony drew his eyebrows together in anger and left the relieved cats alone, stomping to his boyfriend instead. “Show me the newspaper,” he said, reaching his hand for the periodical. Whatever was there, he wanted to know.
“It is nothing—”
“Show me!”
“It really is nothing!”
“You promised to never lie to me again!”
Darn. Steve bit his bottom lip and looked away. He did. He should have known that the relief driven promise would come back and bite him in the butt. Feeling defeated, he reluctantly handed the newspaper.
Tony took it, anger changing into victory as he unfolded the paper and looked at the page Steve had been studying a minute ago. At first, he didn’t see anything interesting, but Steve saw the exact moment when he did. Tony’s whole body convulsed and he drew the paper closer to his eyes, not believing what he was seeing. He read the text and quickly did the math in his head, even counting on fingers for double check, a totally unnecessary move as Tony was good with mathematics. It all fitted. The date, the neighborhood, the cat in the picture.
“Gizmo!” Tony called, lowering the newspaper. “Gizmo!” he tried again and it was the desperation in his voice, that made the black and white cat peek out. Green yellow eyes. White whiskers. Black dots on the nose. “Takk?” he asked, waiting for a reaction, but Gizmo’s ears only twitched as if he heard something he didn’t in a really long time. His real name.
It all hit Tony at once and it made his head spin, not in a good way. “Ty stole him…” Tony whispered. According to the column, a cat like Gizmo disappeared from his backyard, the same day as Tiberius brought Gizmo into the Meow Cafe. All Ty had to do was to take his collar off and discard it somewhere. It was so easy and so cruel.
“He stole him!” Tony cried out, turning to Steve. “Why was I so stupid?!”
“Babe…” Steve said softly. He hated that Tony could so easily blame everything on himself. It wasn’t his fault or anyone at Meow Cafe. They all wanted to help the seemingly stray cat, even if the prime condition the cat arrived to them was suspicious, but they saw a man trying to do a good deed, and didn’t question it. They should have pushed him more, but none of them expected it to be a scam and a way to get close to Tony.
“I can’t believe I believed him, what is wrong with me?!” Tony was beating himself. How could he be so blind? Finding a stray cat. He should smell a scam. He should know better.
“Tony, you couldn’t have known—”
“You don’t get it!! I skipped two grades in elementary school, I should be smarter than this—”
Somehow, the comment made Steve laugh and as soon as he had an occasion, he grabbed Tony in his arms and wrestled down to the couch, kissing his dumb genius breathless.
***
“Takk!”
It was the first time, Tony and Steve saw Gizmo looking so happy. When a burly blond with musculature even greater than Steve’s stood in the door, the black and white cat took the shortest way down from the cat shelves and trotted to the man, his tail standing straight and eyes widen.
“Takk, you mighty beast!” the blond called, when Gizmo jumped on his chest and the guy cuddled the cat close. “What a joyous day for us to be reunited!”
Steve and Tony stared with varying degrees of shock, Steve’s dumbfounded face purely because of the way the stranger was talking, which he should already know as he was the one who called the guy, but he thought that maybe he was an actor and caught him in the middle of rehearsal. Tony’s was soon explained.
“Wow, he is hot,” Tony whispered, staring at the long-haired blond and his square jaw. Definitely his type. He felt Steve’s burning look on him. “Outside! It is hot outside! Would you like some water?!” he rambled out, his cheeks becoming pink and Steve narrowed eyes. Riiight. They were having a pretty hot end of summer, with a lot of rain and clouds.
“Thank you, but I ought to be on my way,” the guy smiled, and it was bright and sunny, and Tony felt a bit weak in the knees, unprepared for that. Steve harrumphed and elbowed him in the ribs, causing his boyfriend to squeak. “My brother is awaiting Takk’s return. He wasn’t himself without him.”
“Oh, right! Tony suddenly remembered. "Before you go, I need to see a proof that Gi— Takk is your cat,” he said. Maybe the warm reunion should be a sufficient sign enough, but Tony decided to be twice as careful from now on. The blond fished out his wallet and took out a photo, handing it to Tony. In the photo, was the blond guy, having his arm wrapped around a pale, black-haired man with a stoic expression, holding a cheerfully looking Gizmo. There was a second photo below that one, clearly taken from hiding as it was a little bit blurry, but it was safe to say that it was the dark-haired men, holding Gizmo in his arms and smiling gently at the cat. Tony could feel the bond between them just by looking at the photo. Steve also looked at the photos, just to be sure, but there was no doubt that Gizmo and the dark haired man had something special.
“Fine with me,” Tony said, handing the photos back, and quickly looking at Steve, who smiled and nodded his agreement.
“And as promised,” the guy hid the photos back and took out an envelope instead, “the reward for keeping Takk safe.”
Tony smiled gently, not imaging that he could ever accept money from a fellow cat lover. “You can keep the money. Or even better, you can donate it to a cat shelter.”
“That I shall,” the blond guy smiled back, impressed by such noble behavior. He kneeled down with Gizmo and put a brown collar with a gold oval medallion on the cat’s neck and attached a leash to it. “It’s time to return home, Takk. Say your farewell,” he told the cat, stroking his face. Gizmo turned back and looked at the people who took care of him in the last weeks. Maybe Tony was imagining things, but it looked like if Gizmo bowed his head to them, his human’s regal behavior rubbing off on him.
“Bye, Gizmo! Stay close to home,” Tony smiled and petted the cat’s head for the very last time. Steve did the same, hoping that nothing would again disrupt their peace.
“Takk, my friends!” the blond called for goodbye, laughing at the surprised expressions of the two men. “Takk means thank you in my language,” he explained and went out of the apartment, Gizmo trotting next to his longtime no seen friend, all excited to be on his way home.
“Huh,” Steve said, locking the door behind the guy. “So, he is Norwegian, but talks like Shakespeare,” he thought out loud, “do you remember his name?” Steve asked. It was in the column, but it slipped his mind.
Tony sat on the couch and pursed his lips as he was thinking. “William,” came out eventually.
“No, not William!” Steve laughed. Maybe Tony was great at math and science, but it seemed that he had real troubles with remembering people’s name. “I think it was something like… Thud?”
Steve didn’t have any more time to think about the name when he heard a quiet sniffling. He looked back at Tony and noticed that his boyfriend was swallowing tears and trying not to break.
“Aww…” Steve cooed and sat on the couch next to Tony, letting him cuddle into his side, and cry quietly. Gizmo was back home after nearly a two months of being absent. Tony couldn’t imagine the pain the dark haired man had to endure.
“Do you think he will be happy?” Tony asked, sniffling his words, meaning the cat.
“Of course,” Steve replied, rubbing his boyfriend’s arm soothingly. “He is going back home.”
“Happier than he would be with us?” Tony asked after a while.
Steve smiled while thinking about his answer. He couldn’t imagine any cat being unhappy with Tony. “He is going back to his family, Tony,” he replied in the end and kissed the top of his boyfriend’s head, hoping that it was enough of an answer. “Oh, hey, Fig!” Steve said, when Figaro, practically out of nowhere jumped on Tony’s lap, wondering what the commotion was about. He observed the whole situation out of his hiding spot, not understanding why all his cat friends were disappearing, but also feeling that they were not in danger. It was a weird feeling.
“And you are back to being an only child,” Steve smiled, scratching the fluffy cat under his chin, just where the white spot was.
Figaro purred as an answer, and curled into Tony’s stomach, taking advantage of the moment for a quick cuddle. He felt that his friend needed more company.
Tony sniffled, petting his cat, and being petted by Steve himself. The apartment looked empty again. But he had Steve and Fig and he wasn’t really alone. It was all good, and maybe one day, life would put another cat in his way, but for now, it was fine the way it was.
***
“We will end on this today. For the next class, read chapter five and think about the differences between Roman and Greek sculptures. Class dismissed!”
It wasn’t an everyday occurrence that Steve let his students free before the assigned hour, but the lecture was done, students behaved good and they all earned an earlier break. It definitely didn’t have to do anything with the fact that it was Steve’s last class and he wanted to get out as soon as possible.
“Remember that your first art project is due until end of this month! I won’t accept anything delayed! If you have any questions you can ask me now!” Steve called after the walking out group of chattering teens, hoping that none of them would turn around and ask him questions. He was just being nice, not counting that anyone would take on his offer. Luckily, no one did, and after the class emptied, Steve packed his things and walked out, already smiling at the perspective of the afternoon.
“Are you ready?” he was asked as soon as he stepped out of the room and almost jumped a foot up. “Woah, easy!” Natasha laughed, secretly enjoying sneaking up on her fellow teacher.
“Oh, did you end the class early today too?” Steve asked, walking down the corridor with Nat, trying to make their way out, before the halls would fill with screaming and running teens.
“Yhm. I think I would accompany you today. If you don’t mind that is,” she smiled, her eyes sparkling happily. It was no secret, that each day after Steve was done teaching, he rushed to the new Meow Cafe to help with setting up the place and meet his friends and boyfriend, where they stayed till late hours.
“I don’t,” Steve smiled back, noticing some orange fur intertwined into Natasha’s black sweater. “Aw, Oliver slept on it again?”
“Dammit,” Natasha frowned, looking down at herself and trying to pick the fur out, “I thought I cleaned it well.”
“You know how it is, when you have a cat, everything becomes a cat,” Steve laughed, not so much bothered by the black fur on his clothes anymore but finding it alarming when he woke up and had strands of long fur in his mouth. That should not happen. “How is Oliver doing?”
“Very good,” Natasha replied. They went outside and turned their faces to the sun, enjoying the crisp Autumn air around them. “He tripped Clint over last night. It was hilarious,” she said, giggling, and it was rare to see her giggle. Owning a cat was serving her well. “And how are the things between you and your barista?” Natasha asked, well aware of their eventful past.
“Very good,” Steve parroted, smiling broadly and meaning every word. Maybe it wasn’t the wild heat anymore, but he and Tony were going steady and Steve had a feeling that Tony was the one. Of course, he didn’t say anything yet, knowing that they both could rush into things, and there was no need for that. They loved each other and were not only boyfriends, but partners. It was something Steve never had before. “How are Clint and Bruce doing?” Steve asked, his voice gaining a teasing note. Natasha still didn’t admit to dating them both and living in a threesome, but Steve knew better.
Natasha looked away and bit her cheek, trying to hold a smile back. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she said in a neutral tone. Of course. Too bad that Bruce had two sphinxes, because additional fur on Natasha’s clothes would point against her.
“Yeah, you don’t,” Steve laughed, not bothered. If Natasha wanted to keep it as a secret and not say anything until they all were ready, he won’t force her. Didn’t mean he won’t tease her. “Oh, do you know if Bruce will be at the cafe today?”
“No, he has evening school today, maybe he will appear around 8 pm — sneaky!” Natasha gasped, shoving Steve in the arm and laughing together with him.
They took the subway and soon were in the neighborhood of the new Meow Cafe. It was just a few blocks away from the previous location, which still counted as a manageable walking distance from Tony’s apartment, which was good. It wasn’t as close to the main street as the previous location, and maybe it was better. It would for sure minimize people coming to get a coffee to go and point customers willing to stay and bond with the cats, without the unnecessary rush.
“We are here,” Steve stopped, letting Natasha take the sight in.
“Oh. It… looks nice,” she said wanting to be polite. It didn’t look nice at all. The building was clearly not used for a long time and the paint was falling off the walls, not mentioning the graffiti on one side. The windows were covered with black foil, including the big front window, so similar to the one that the previous cafe had, to hide everything from the people walking by. The place looked quite depressing in comparison to the shiny new buildings around it.
“They will fix the outside soon,” Steve explained, “I saw the projects and it will fit right in with the neighborhood.”
“The building looks big,” Natasha observed. Putting aside the poor look, the place had potential.
“Yeah, it is almost twice as big as the previous cafe. More room for cats!” Steve laughed and he knocked on the door, letting everyone know about his arrival before entering. “Hi! I brought a guest!”
“Hi! Come on in!” Pepper called, leaning out from her place on the spacious couch, sitting with Happy and Rhodey. The small group was in the already done part of the cafe, with walls painted in warm brown colors and latte stripes, and some furniture, stacked in a corner and still waiting to be placed. The only available furniture was the couch, covered in plastic wrap for safety until painting would be done, and small plastic tables in front with empty boxes of Chinese food. The place smelled of fresh paint and exotic spices, and it was a harsh combination, but Steve and Nat quickly got used to it.
“Long time no see!” Rhodey called to Nat when she and Steve approached and Pepper stood up to greet her properly, boys quickly following.
“It looks much nicer here,” Natasha smiled, loving how the paint made the whole place look cozy. She could imagine the whole cafe done in such colors and she already knew it was a good choice.
“How’s Oliver?” Pepper asked her friend, and everyone sat down, the girls talking about cats, while Steve asked Happy and Rhodey was there any more work left for him and how the progress was going.
“We finished installing the bar today,” Rhodey said, pointing to the bar area, “it is fully functional so we don’t need to drink instant coffee anymore!” he grinned, the next second standing up to properly greet their guests and serve them a cup. Steve watched a bit amazed, how efficient Rhodey was with the sparkling new and, in his eyes, highly advanced coffee maker. Maybe it was mandatory for all of Tony’s friends to pass a barista exam. Steve wouldn’t be surprised if that was the truth. Soon, he was presented with a cup of latte with sugar, while in front of Natasha was a double espresso, strong and black.
“The whole back office is done,” Happy summed up, listening all the renovations that already took place, while Rhodey had been preparing coffee. That included the office, cat room, kitchen and bathroom for workers. “Half of the cafe needs painting and changing of the panels, and then we have to do the bathroom for clients and the playground.”
“Playground?” Natasha asked, surprised by the words, taking a sip of her espresso.
“For the cats,” Pepper picked it up from there. “It will be an area specifically designed for cats, without access for the customers. Some pillows, toys, cat shelves, to rest and play, while customers could observe. We will put in there a lot of hiding spots in case one of the cats decides that they don’t want to be seen.”
“And then the outside. The signboard is in the making together with curtains and pillows for the furniture. We have painters scheduled. It should go smoothly now, it was a pain to fix the whole installation, it is an old building and we needed to take all precautions to not— you know,” Happy’s voice dropped. He didn’t need to say it. The fire. The official cause of the fire was faulty installation, but the opinions among the crew of Meow Cafe were divided. Very divided.
“Um, where is Tony?” Steve asked, trying to change the topic.
“He and Janet are in the kitchen. They are testing some recipe,” Pepper answered, “and I think they were saying something about trying out new uniforms?”
As on cue, there was a hearable swing of the door, and Janet’s head peaked out through the double door, the same model with an easy swing used in all restaurants. Some sweet, warm scent of spices made its way into the room and it showed how well ventilated the kitchen was.
“Good, you all are sitting!” Jan brightened, and before anyone could ask why exactly they should be sitting, Jan popped her head back into the kitchen, took a three-second break, and then leaped out again, opening the bar area and standing outside. “Ladies and gentlemen! May I have your attention, please!” she announced, putting both hands around her mouth. It wasn’t necessary, as everyone already turned to her, curious what was going on. “Straight from the runaway, I present to you, the new Meow Cafe uniforms!”
And…
Nothing. The group exchanged perplexed looks.
Janet huffed her cheeks out. She turned to the door leading to the kitchen, and stomped her foot impatiently, the rubber sole of her sneakers barely making any sound. “TONY!! Get your ass here, or I will drag it out!!”
The comment made everyone chuckle a little. That was Janet, going from super sweet to super angry in less than a second.
There was another three-second break, and Janet almost jumped back into the kitchen, when the door opened.
The usual Meow Cafe uniforms were quite simple. They were aprons, black, with embroidered logo on the chest, and a big pocket in the front. Standard off the shelve. When Tony walked out, everyone saw that the new uniforms were not so different. The apron didn’t change, it was still a classic cut, just instead of the pocket being in the center, there was a smaller on the side, near the hip, and there was a second one, the same size, on the opposite side, on the chest. It was knee length and had a dark grey stripe of material around the middle, for a better fit. The used material was in steel grey color, which was less formal than the classic black from before. What made it stand out, was the accessories.
Why Tony was reluctant to go out, became quickly explained. At the top of his head, was a headband with cat ears attached, black with brownish stripes, the color resembling Figaro’s fur. It was not the end. On Tony’s hands were big gloves, cut out to look like cat’s paws, with pink paw pads, and also the same color as the ears. The fingers were cut though, and Tony’s own fingers were visible. It made sense, seeing that workers had to somehow write orders and serve coffee. It was surprising that Janet didn’t draw any cat whiskers on Tony’s cheeks to complete the look, but maybe she dropped that idea because of the goatee on brunet’s face.
The reactions were divided, from Natasha’s staring in shock to Rhodey quietly laughing at his friend’s new cat look, but it was Steve who won everything, by chocking on his coffee and spraying it out of his mouth on everybody.
“Ew! Steve!” Natasha scolded, wiping her face off.
Tony’s mouth dropped as he just noticed his boyfriend and Natasha among the crew. Jan had to time it out like that on purpose. “You tricked me!!” he pointed a paw at his friend, finger pointing at the beaming girl.
“Doesn’t he look great?!” Jan buzzed, obviously proud.
“Um… Janet…” Pepper started insecurely, while the rest of the group was drying themselves off and grumbling, except Rhodey who was still chocking with laughter. And Steve, who was still staring at Tony. “It's… It’s nice,” she said clumsily, unsure how to end.
“I know! And the material is easy to wash too! No more coffee stains! And this!” Jan took Tony’s hand and showed the pink paw pads. “Can be used to wipe off the tables!”
“Shouldn’t agree to let her design the uniforms,” Happy leaned to his wife and whispered, and Pepper grunted, knocking the man away.
The group didn’t say anything. No one wanted to hurt Jan’s feelings. Maybe Natasha wouldn’t mind, always speaking what was on her mind, but it wasn’t her place.
“By the way, I was joking,” Jan ended the silence and pushed Tony closer to the group, making him stumble. “Only the apron is for the cafe, I made the rest to make Steve spit coffee out,” she smirked, pleased that her plan worked.
Everyone breathed out in relief, especially Pepper. She took the hem of the apron and rubbed the material between her fingers. “It is really great, Jan!” she started and everyone followed with praise.
Steve didn’t say anything and kept looking from his blushing boyfriend to Janet, finally stopping on the girl. “So, can Tony keep the ears?” he asked, and if Tony wasn’t blushing enough before, his face just exploded with red. Luckily, he had his paw gloves to hide into.
“Sure!” Jan smiled, stripping Tony off the uniform and passing it along the group to get all the feedback she could, before she would start sewing for everyone. She encouraged Tony with another push and practically made him stumble into Steve’s lap.
“Aw,” Steve cooed, holding his boyfriend, feeling enamored by the cute behavior. “Come here, my kitty,” he said and pulled Tony closer, kissing him once, not wanting to push it in front of the group. It seemed to work and after the last grumble, Tony sat next to Steve and pulled the gloves off, but left the headband in his hair. Just for fun.
“I am thinking of putting here a cat’s face,” Jan smiled, squeezed between Rhodey and Pepper, and drew a circle on the lower pocket with her finger, showing where the pattern should be. “Maybe in a white thread!”
“Hey, weren’t you baking something?” Happy asked, remembering why Tony and Janet went to the kitchen in the first place. Jan almost jumped out of her place, but Tony was faster and stood up first.
“It is fine, I will get it,” he said, motioning for the girl to sit down, “I got the mittens for it,” he took the previously discarded cat gloves and walked back into the kitchen. When he came back, he was holding a tray with giant cookies on them. “The oven turned itself just as we programmed it! Dig in!” he smiled, setting the tray down and taking two cookies with himself, for him and Steve.
Steve looked at the giant oatmeal cookie that was handed to him, seeing nuts and raisins in the dough. He took the first bite, and the taste and combination of spices definitely rang a bell in his head.
“Wow, those are really good!”
“Delicious!”
“Way better than the one we used to serve!”
“What recipe did you use?”
“Steve’s!” Tony announced happily, and all eyes turned to him and the blond, and it was Steve’s turn to blush, as he was not used to be the center of attention. “I hope you don’t mind,” Tony said, turning to his boyfriend. Of course, he first used the recipe and then thought about asking for permission.
Steve shook his head and nibbled on the cookie. He didn’t mind. “It is not really my recipe, it was my grandma’s,” he said and remembered the afternoon when as a little kid he was helping his granny measure out the ingredients and knead the sticky dough.
“To Steve’s grandma!” Rhodey called, raising his cookie and the rest followed, paying a tribute to the woman.
“Really, really good,” Natasha nodded, biting the cookie again, and she wasn’t big on sweets to start with.
“Umm…” Steve said, and all eyes turned to him again. “If you want, you can use this recipe in the cafe,” he offered. Maybe if his friends liked the cookies, the customers would too.
“Are you sure?” Pepper asked. It was a family recipe after all.
“Sure,” Steve smiled, again remembering his past, and this time memories of him and Bucky stuffing their faces with cookies in secret appeared in his mind. Those were good times. “I think my granny would like that.”
Pepper smiled and agreed. The new cafe was given a wonderful new start.
“New aprons and new cookie recipe! We are starting strong!” Janet cheered, and everyone nodded.
“Speaking of starting strong…” Pepper said and looked briefly at her husband, who smiled at her encouragingly. “I want to introduce another change,” she said, turning directly to Tony.
Oh uh. That was the moment. Everyone froze and Tony especially. Of course, Pepper always claimed that Tony would have a spot in the cafe, as long as he wants the job, and while he trusted Pepper, there was no solid guarantee she would hire him back.
“I thought for a long time about and I think it would be the best if…” Pepper made a pause and took a breath, “Tony would become a co-owner of the new Meow Cafe.”
“Me?!” Tony’s eyebrows raised up, and the surprise was lost in the general cheering of the group.
“That’s a great idea!”
“You deserve it, Tony!”
“Go, Tones!”
“What do you say, Tony?” Pepper asked with a smile. “I am promoting you from the head barista to a co-owner. Are you interested?”
“Peeeep…” Tony drawled, brushing both hands through his hair, unsure what to think yet. It was a huge honor, but also a huge responsibility. His fingers caught the headband with cat ears and he took it out of his hair and looked at it. If he became a co-owner, it would mean no more goofing around. No more being late. No more serving the customers, but planning and managing a group of people. And, if he was being honest with himself, he liked being a barista. He liked having direct contact with clients, and looking after the cats and job flirting with customers, granted he didn’t want to do that anymore seeing that he had Steve — his inner turmoil was interrupted when Steve put a hand on his knee and squeezed in a loving gesture. Tony’s breath hitched. If he would take the job, he would have a lot less time to spend with Steve. And…
“I really appreciate it,” Tony looked at his friend, and smiled, emotions clear in him, “but I will say no. Having my old job back is good enough for me.”
The group was disappointed and Steve smiled sadly, but understood, somehow expecting this.
“Are you sure? Maybe think about it a little more—”
“No,” Tony shook his head, interrupting Pepper, “I am sure. In fact, seeing that you want me back, I would like to become a half-time worker, instead of a full time.”
“What?! Why?!” it was Janet who cried the words out, and everyone gaped at Tony, Steve included.
“Guys, I can’t serve coffee and pet cats till rest of my life!” Tony laughed. He loved his job, but it was time to start new projects. During his free time, he got back into graphic designing and made a portfolio and had big plans. Time to focus on that, and treat Meow Cafe as a stepping stone and form of relaxation. “I am pushing thirty and—”
It was the worst timing for Steve to take a sip of his drink, as he started to choke on the liquid, quickly putting both hands to his mouth to avoid spitting on his friends again. Tony quickly patted blond’s back, helping him to calm down.
“You are thirty?!” he called out, unnecessarily loud after the coughing fit ended.
Tony narrowed eyes, sending the blond a calculating look. “In a few months, yeah, why?” he asked, and his tone told Steve to very carefully pick his words.
Steve felt a note of panic. He looked among the group and saw Rhodey and Pepper looking back at him, and he suddenly remembered that they were Tony’s peers, and very probably were the same age. Not that it mattered anyway, comparing to Steve’s twenty-eight years old, it was barely any age difference, but he always assumed that Tony was younger than him. Twenty-four, top twenty-five. He looked for help to Natasha, but the girl only kept smiling, eagerly waiting how he would get out of this one.
“Are you the same age as… everyone else?” Steve turned to Janet, and he could hear Tony roll his eyes. The brunet girl looked young, but so did Tony, and he couldn’t trust his eyes anymore.
“I am actually forty, but I keep up well,” Janet answered with a huge smile and giggled at Steve’s mortified look, as the blond totally bought it.
“Jan is a freshman in college,” Happy took pity on the baffled Steve, “and so is Bruce, if you want to know.”
Steve nodded, feeling that he made a fool out of himself. Slowly, he turned back to Tony to check if his boyfriend was still glaring at him. Unfortunately, he was. The group started talking again and Steve pulled Tony closer to himself.
“So, you were not joking when you told me that I can drink from white mugs when I get older?” he asked in a whisper, remembering the occurrence that took place in Tony’s kitchen during the movie marathon for their shared friends. That seemed to break the ice and Tony giggled in humor. He smooched his idiot boyfriend, and turned to join the conversation, that currently was on a topic about hiring a new person to fill in Tony’s absence.
“Don’t worry!” Tony called, ceasing the chatter. “I already have a replacement,” he smiled, calming everyone down. All eyes turned to him, waiting for the news. Tony just smiled mysteriously, enjoying the attention. He leaned to take Steve’s cup and took a sip of the nearly cold latte. “But it is not set in stone yet. You will find out soon. And can I get a proper coffee?! Do I have to do everything around here?!” he called dramatically and stood up to go to the coffee machine, Rhodey soon following and arguing that the coffee he had made was fine, and Tony was being a pain in the a–
Steve kept smiling, listening to the chatter around him and the sound of coffee beans being ground.
Big plans, big changes, but less and less time to adjust.

Ian Wright, former footballer and broadcaster - 10 things we learned from Ian Wright's Desert Island Discs

Ian Wright, former footballer and broadcaster - 10 things we learned from Ian Wright's Desert Island Discs
Ian Wright is a former footballer and is now a TV and radio broadcaster. He grew up in south-east London, and unusually he didn’t sign with a professional football club until he had reached his early 20s, starting at Crystal Palace in 1985. After impressing as a forward at Palace, he was bought by Arsenal for a record fee in 1991, staying there until 1998.
Ian retired in 2000 and in total, he played 581 league games, scoring 387 goals for seven clubs in England and Scotland, and earning 33 England caps. Since his retirement from football, he has had a career in television and radio and continues to appear as a pundit on Match of the Day. Here’s what we learned from Ian’s Desert Island Discs:
1. Ian Wright was a late starter as a professional footballer
When he signed for Crystal Palace aged 21 he was a Sunday League player who worked as a labourer to feed his young family. It was his foreman who said his job would be waiting for him if football didn’t work out that persuaded him to take the deal. He went on to be the second highest scorer in Arsenal’s history and to win 33 caps for England.
2. Ian thinks his ‘best match’ was his very first league game for Arsenal
“It was with my dear friend David Rocastle. We grew up on the same estate. I’ve known David since he was five and I was nine and he was an inspiration to the whole estate because when he was 15, 16 he got signed by Arsenal as a youth team player.”
He was the one who’d encourage Ian saying: “You should be playing, you should be trying to get in.” “It’s moments like this,” says Ian, “where it’s difficult to speak about him because he was always looking out for me, wanted me to do the very best I can with the opportunities. When I got to Arsenal our first league game was away to Southampton and I scored a hat-trick in the game and David scored the other goal, it’s the best football match I’ve ever played in.”
David Rocastle died aged just 33 from Hodgkin lymphoma. “I don’t think of the accolades or the trophies I’ve won or the England caps – which mean the world to me – all I think about is the fact that I played with him for a year as a professional.”
3. Ian’s first music choice for the island is his ‘surprise disc’
“I know people would never ever guess this one,” says Ian, because it’s music that he reckons no one would ever associate with him. It’s an aria from Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, as featured in the film The Shawshank Redemption. On his one hour commute to Arsenal this is the first track Ian would play, because he wanted to be calm at the start of the journey, before turning up the volume: “When I’m close to Arsenal I’m probably blasting out The Prodigy or something like that. But this is what I’d start with.”
4. He would have cried the first time he played for England except for Paul Gascoigne
Seeing his boots under the England number 9 shirt in the dressing room at Wembley, Ian could feel the tears welling up: “I remember Gazza saying: ‘Look at Wrighty, he’s going to cry.’ And I swear, if Gazza doesn’t say that then I’m probably going to burst into tears.”
5. A teacher at Turnham Primary School changed his life
Ian describes how he had a difficult time at school, finding it hard to concentrate until he met one particular teacher, Mr Pigden, the person Ian credits with changing his life: “I don’t know why he chose me but he did. He gave me responsibility, I used to collect the registers from the teachers, then they made me milk monitor. It was really good, I just felt important. He wouldn’t let me play football if he heard I’d been naughty in class. He just gave me a sense of feeling like I had some use… He was the greatest man in the world.” Ian dedicated his 2016 autobiography to Sydney Pigden.
Mum wasn’t really fussed. Maybe because I used to leave the house in my school uniform. And then get changed and go to work!
Mr Pigden repaid the compliment telling Ian that he was more proud when Ian made his England debut than his own flight over Buckingham Palace as a pilot to mark the end of the Second World War.
6. Ian left school at 14 and became a plasterer
“How did your mum react?” asks Lauren. “She wasn’t really fussed,” replies Ian, before adding: “Maybe because I used to leave the house in my school uniform. And then get changed and go to work!”
7. Ian was in prison in 1982 for 18 days
Ian received a prison sentence for failing to pay fines and driving without a licence, among other offences. “I couldn’t take it…” he says. “I cried from the first day to the last day. It made me realise I can’t do this. When I came out it was a case of trying to find the kind of job that would pay me so I could focus on getting that trade until [my football career] started to happen.”
8. Success on the football field brought its own problems
“You start to think you’re a bit special,” says Ian.
“A little bit too big for your boots?” suggests Lauren.
“Absolutely, I went through that. If I’m totally honest [they’re] not my proudest years. I caused a lot of problems for my family… I made some terrible decisions. I found that when I went on the football pitch everything I was doing off it didn’t bother me. On the football pitch is sanctuary.”
9. So how did he turn things around?
There were times at Arsenal that Ian’s temper got the better of him. “I needed therapy. I’d got to a stage in my life where you’re not hearing the word ‘No’ because you’re doing do so well and that’s dangerous to the point you’re obnoxious. I went to see this wonderful woman and she recognised after the first few sessions [and said]: ‘You’re not telling me the truth – why have you come here? If you want to waste money go and do it somewhere else because I’ve got too many people who need help and you are wasting my time.’ She said that and then I burst into tears… and then I poured it all out and the therapy was the best thing that ever happened to me. What I realised was that a lot of it stemmed from my youth and when I was a child. One time she asked me about being hugged. She said ‘Can you remember the first hug you got from your mum? Can you remember any time your step-dad showed you affection?’ And I literally couldn’t remember anything like that.”
How did the therapy help? “It made me realise that it wasn’t great when I was growing up but I turned it into something and I’m just pleased that I got to a stage… I didn’t want to be that guy that when I looked in the mirror I didn’t like myself.”
10. What are his hopes for the future?
“All I want my kids to do is be wonderful with their kids, to do the best they can, give them the best education and lots of love,” says Ian. “Now, I feel I’m in an unbelievable place, I’ve got an unbelievable woman and with everything I’ve gone through to get to marry someone like my wife Nancy I know someone is looking out for me.”

-Gavin Lee sounds a little strange...like Squidward sounds like he could't care less about anything and is so resigned to his loud neighbors
-which...he is....but he sounds off idk. Still a good performance tho
-like with Pat, there's a distinction between his singing voice and speaking voice
-he sounds good though but not like the live performances....idk if that's good or bad
-the fart noise strikes again
-RIGHT INTO SANDY'S PART
-love the country track
-she sounds so nice 10/10
-that "daaaaAYYYYY" 10000/10

-again, Ethan always sounds so pure
-he really nails the innocence of sb
-the bg chorus is fantastic
-I love all the references in this song
-Brendan Urie did a great job
-I really love how this song is in reference to krabs' opinion of sb. That's always been a really cool relationship dynamic
-sb is like a son to krabs and krabs is kinda a father figure? (I know sb has a dad but) sb is always looking to krabs for approval and when he looses it he gets real down (the second movie has a cool nod to this; "you were like an underpaid son to me")

Anonymous ask: do you have any pets? What are their names? Why do you keep them? What got you into keeping them? Do you have any future pet plans? 💖💖
Ok anon do u really wanna get into this convo? Itll take a while.
Okay so im at college so rn the only pets with me are my fishb a male halfmoon plakat named Cosmos Florence the second, a nerite snail named Nertb and a black mystery named Onyx. I keep them because god man i just. I just love em so much ya know? Its like. I have this little ball of hate and rage in my dorm who has such a beautiful personality and then to complement that i have these chill snaild who r just trying really hard. Back home we have even more pets and oh man oh man i love them?? They are what love and joy looks like?? We have my dogs, cat, turtle, lizards, birds, hairless guinea pigs, fish, and chickens.
The chickens are named Short Bread and Oreo bevause of how they looked when they were younger. Oreo is a little spunkyer that Short bread while i think short bread is a little…. Confused? Yeah just generally confused by everything.
We have Mr. T, our full grown, healthy red ear slider who lives in a small pond in the back yard with a few feeder fish he never ate. Those fish have grown to be his pals and he just. Hase never eaten them.
Then we have the birds, Able, who likes to tell at you if u look at her to long. Her hobbys are chewing through toys as she is hanging from them and being suprised when she falls. We then have Birbank, named after the airport my dad found him at, who lives very closely with his bf Ruby. Birbank is a grey and white cockatiel and Ruby is a green Indian Ringneck. They had being more than 2 feet apart for longer than 2 seconds and often u will find Ruby yelling when Birbank flys somewhere he cant go (ruby doesnt know how to fly) and birbank screaming when he realises the mistake he made. Ruby likes to give people kisses and is a lover, not a fighter. Birbank likes to hiss at peanuts and ignore everything besides Ruby. Next we have our Canary, Mango whos fav food is blue berrys and kale. He likes to sing when he hears trumpets and my flute. He has a club foot so when we adopted him the bird rescue we got him from was relived because no one else would take him. He is the most graceful flying bird i have ever seen! Finally we have the zebra finch named Shimmy. When we first adopted him he had a super bad plucking problem and was almost completly bald but hes doing much better now, aggressivly peeping when he hears the canary.
Okay now we have 2 lizards, a leopard gecko named Romeo and a crested gecko named Gargoyle. Romeo is a sweet boi with a chubby tail who loves his crickets fast and his meal worms slow. He has one of those reptile hammocks but he prefers climding his cave more. Gargoyle is a sweet girl who will only eat her food when it starts to harden again for some reason. We dont know why but she does and shes kinda a butt. But ya gotta love her!
Our cat’s name is Figaro and she’s currently bald. She had to get shaved, the vet said shes getting up in her years so when she stopped grooming for a month and got matts in her long fur they said she had basicly cat arthritis. Shes doing good and her hobbies are (well atleast when i was home) meowing in my mouth at 3 am to tell me she ate all her food and wanted more.
Wr have 5 dogs so just get ready for that. All our dogs but 1 is a rescue. Coal is a chow/black lab mix. She was adopted as a pup from a local animal rescue and she kniws the mist tricks. Shes a good girl who likes hugs, treats, and when u massage her face. Her favorite toy is a yellow stick that she will bring to you when asked. Shes the second youngest! Lily is the youngest, i sometiems call her satan but only because she is a trickster! You will turn around and shell be on the table eating food, stealing anything from coal, and trying to think up world domination. She and Coal are super close, when we got her Coal went all MaMa dog and now they are inseparable. What makes it better is that Lily is a half Chihuahua/Pomeranian mix so shes tiny next to Coal. Our third youngest is Scarlet, wr think shes the product of a long hair Chihuahua and a deer head Chihuahua. Shes a primadonna who enjoys her alone time and pets. She also like to be held, mainly like a baby so u can hold her and tub her tum. She also REALLY LIKES CAR RIDES like man even going to the vet shes jazzed. Second oldest is Vinnie, a pug my bro ham adopted. Hes super sweet and good he likes face squishes and whrn he naps his tail uncurles. He stands very proper like hes a gentleman and likes to sit on ur feat. He has a grain allergy so he eats special grain free food. Next we have the oldest of our dogs MY SWEET BABY GIRL GIGI. shes my sun and moon. We got gigi when i was 8 and when i was 10 my sister went to college, leaving her for me to takr care of. And well, shes literally the most important thing in the world to me. My sister got her from a breader (which i dont like cus dogs in shelters need homes) but shes a Brussels Griffon so the breader croped her ears and tail. I DO NOT CONDONE THE PRACTICE OF CROPPING AND PART OF A DOG UNLESS SUGGESTED BY A VET, SOME DOGS GET THEIR TAILS CROPPED BECAUS ETHEY BREAK BONES IN THEM AND THAT IS THE ONLY CROPPING I CONDONE. Her ears were cropped lopsidedb and improperly which brought many problems to her later on. She developed many ear infections that have caused her to scratch her ears until they bleed, has had medication for 3 different ear infections, and has almost no ear canal left. Her vet has told us she is almost deef. Also as she got older she got chronic dry eye and takes medicated eye drops for it but shes fine as long as she has those. She needs loud or sharp sounds to get her attention so i trained her to respond to clapping, whistling (which i do very loudly) and snapping fingers. She is a sweet heartb adn a super velcro dog! I cried for three days after i had to go to college and they drive her up to visit me. When im home she goes looking for me if im out of site for 2 minutes, will wait at the bathroom door for me, stare up the stairs when i go to shower, and press her face against closed doors she knows i went through. Whne she does the last thing i have to drum my fingers on the door so she knows to move back before i open it. I miss her horribly and i skype her almost every day, she gets super excited! The first few days i was gone she actually wouldnt stop barking at night. Shes also a cuddle baby and she doesnt sleep unless she is touching me ao it was probably rough for her. I miss her but ill be able to see her in october when i go to my sisters wedding.
The fish! Okay so my mother has a 75 gallon gold fish aquarium and a 30 gallon in the garage with nithing in it yet (shes thinking tetras). The gold fish tank has 2 butter fly tails and some bristle nose plecos. It also has many a snail rn! A friend of ours dismantled a large aquarium of his own ( he is going through a very hard time financially and im hoping everything works out for him) and gave us the plecos and snails. The snails are 3 rabbit snailsb one nerite (he gave us 2 but the other is with my betta) a few black mysteries, and a golden apple who i named Big Mama.
Lemme tell u about big mama real fast. I call her this because, first of all shes a full grown golden appleb second of all because shes a mama. He had a live planted tank thich included a moss ball he has been taking care of for 5 year, its the size of my head and when we put it in the 75 gallon it because the main pice of the tank. What we found out later was that Big Mama had made her family in ut and we have abou 20 BABY GOLDEN APPLES IN THERE ALONE!! He also gave us an anibius fern which i put in my betta’s tank and after getting to college and living hear for a few weeks i found out there were eggs on it because I KNOW HAVE MANY A BABY GOLDEN APPLE. these ones tho r much smaller than the moss ball ones, mine being hatchlings and those being the size of a finger nail. But anyway they have grown large enough where i can tell they r not pest snails and i will be rehoming them to other fish keepers in my dorms once they get a little bigger.
My mom has 3 hairless guinea pigs. Did you know that at petco people tend to walk in and drop off pets they “just dont want any more”? Well it hapoens a lot and my mom fell in love with them instantly. We have Billy, the oldest, Piggy, the middle in age, and sweet baby Bear who is small and young. They are all good boys and are doing very well so far in their new home! My mom had already owned billy and was looking into getting him friends, (guinea pigs live friends! They actually should be kept in atleast pairs but we were not aware at first, now we know better) all three of them are being slowly introduced! Bear and Piggy already live together but we dont want to rush this process and put billy right into the mix, that would probably be the worst think. They are slowly beibg acclimated to eachother.
I guess you could say i love pets because they are sweet and wonderful. I keep most of them because i know i can care for them, that i have the space, and the resources. I have the time and the will to foster a loving home for all my pets, and so does my family. Animals are a big part of my life and i love all of them with all my heart.
My future plans? Well nothing soon! Im in a dorm so Cosmos and his snail friends are all ivr got planed rn. But i hope to, onece in the distante future, get a tank with a school of danionella dracula in it, they are tiny fishb only getting half an inch in side. But id need a good tank for them since they school about 12 and id like to do the whome thing live plants (i also want one of those rimless aquatiums hnnnnnnnngh) i hope to upgrade cosmos to a larger aquarium b currently hes in a 2.5 which is enough for a betta, sure, but id rather he be in a 5 gallon. But really? I just wanna go home n be with GiGi more than anything.
Thank you for the ask!
