I just want to talk about what an amazingly well-written character Kaz Proctor from Wentworth is 

I love the fact that she landed in prison not due to lack of empathy and/or an inability to tell right from wrong like so many other characters in prison, but, on the contrary, due to almost an excess of empathy and an extreme view of right and wrong. 

Also, it’s so rare to see a character who’s highly empathetic to a fault, but not a typical “sweet girl”, or a perfect Mary-Sue. She’s extremely strong, a total badass, has many flaws and is still extremely empathetic and has a strong, almost detrimental determination to help others. One of the best characters on Wentworth imo

Blood. There was blood. So much. Kaz was bleeding.

With that, instinct took over and she found herself standing and putting herself between Marie and Kaz. Brody had left her with the gun and seeing the bad history between the two... it had ended with a bullet in Kaz’s leg. Taylah wasn’t taking anymore chances. She didn’t trust Marie. Any trust that she might’ve had in her evaporated when she realized that Marie was a willing participant in this blood bath.

“Leave her alone,” she warned her ex-lover, trying to sound intimidating.

          Taylah was excited to go somewhere other than Kaz’s home (and really her home too. It was the first place she’d ever felt at home in), but she was scared too. There was gonna be strangers. Probably lots of them too. But Kaz was here and she made the small girl feel safe and they had to go shopping.

          “Mumma...” she called quietly, reaching out to be picked up as soon as she was unbuckled, wanting to be close to Kaz purely for comfort reasons. She’d walk, if she had to, but being carried made it all a little less daunting.

ok ill bite. what is this lesbian prison show about and where can i watch it

the show is wentworth (it’s also the name of the prison these women are in and the prison/show is set in australia) and it starts with this woman named bea who tried to murder her husband (who was an abusive piece of shit + a rapist) and the show mainly centers around her for the first few seasons. the main characters really differ depending on the season but the most consistent cast of main characters is bea smith (s1-s4), franky doyle (s1-s6ish) (another inmate at the prison), vera bennett (s1-s8) (dare i say she’s the real main character of this show bc.. i feel like she’s the character we know the most about outside of her job in the prison), joan ferguson (s2-s5) (s8) (i may be biased bc i adore pam but probably one of the most fascinating characters in the whole show), boomer jenkins (s1-s8) (one of the only consistent “main characters” along with vera, will, and linda), will jackson (s1-s8) (i don’t like him but he just works in the prison), allie novak (s4-s8) (another inmate who later has a relationship with bea and various other women in the prison), linda miles (s1-s8) (a background character but if you look at the cell block h wiki, the backstory the actress playing linda (jacquie brennan) came up with is super interesting to me), jake stewart (s4-s8) (again i don’t like him he just works in the prison that’s all i’m gonna say), kaz proctor (s3-s7) (one of my personal favourites besides joan and vera, an absolutely heartbreaking character though) doreen anderson (s1-s5) (not gonna lie, her characters annoying but i think shareena clanton is a brilliant woman nonetheless and obviously had no control over the character im assuming), marie winter (s6-s8) (allie’s ex girlfriend, she’s absolutely diabolical (dare i say worse than joan?) but susie porter plays her SO well), liz birdsworth (s1-s7) (an older woman in the prison who’s the prison mother basically. think of red from oitnb but not russian, working in the kitchen, and being a bit harsh), and bridget westfall (s3-s6) (she’s the prisons psychologist + later on frankys girlfriend). you can stream it on netflix in the us and australia (probably other places too but i haven’t looked too far into it LOL) or these sites here (has a lot of pop ups but it plays in good quality eventually) and here. also fair warning, if you do watch wentworth, s4e03 contains a graphic and quite unnecessary rape scene, and brings up mentions of said scene and episode or two after the fact. but anyways, if you watched and enjoyed oitnb, you’ll most likely like this show way more, speaking as someone who’s watched both multiple times, but if you watch it pls tell me your thought on it <3 i love hearing what people have to say about things i like!!

YEAH FR.. Like I was so disappointed they killed Kaz off and like it was just a huge absence after that where she should have been??? I guess they did one thing right by humanizing her (showing her in a humane light I mean, her POV as a radfem) but like even that they obvi could've done better... And the whole lake scene w jackson. Idk, I did like that they showed how unhinged he became after her death because they were two people recognizing the good in each other after a conflicted history and when he began going off the rails he KNEW how disappointed she was in him. Whatever I liked or disliked about how they did things, they at least portrayed her absence as hard-hitting to most of the main characters in some way.

I felt so bad for Allie, running around trying to figure out who killed Kaz. Hell, I feel bad for me too lmao I wanted to pause watching but I only kept going at the time to find out who it was. Honestly Allie deserved better. Kaz Proctor deserved better.

The Will and Kaz storyline was really sad imo bc he was the only man she ever trusted and then she finds out he's fucking Marie. I think their friendship was really sweet before that and it made me like Will for a little bit.

I'm really happy that even though her and Allie were fighting when she died she told her that she loved her right before.

I definitely though Marie was involved in her murder but I had no idea it was Brody, that was so shocking to me.

Also, remember that time she threw a bomb in Maries cell? Girlboss queen icon

Allie has been through so much awful shit. Like being kicked out as a teenager and having no choice but to become a prostitute, the love of her life dying, going into a coma and almost dying, the whole thing with Marie, Kaz dying, the siege, getting stabbed in the back and ending up in a wheelchair. And like she never did anything wrong, all Allie did was for survival and love. And Kaz too, I agree with you so much, she deserved so much better.

          It was cold and wet and Dan had been walking for hours, he shivered as he held his backpack tightly against his chest. It was his birthday and instead of celebrating it with someone who cared, he had been essentially been kicked out and forced to take care of himself when he had no home to go to. That really sucked, but he still had his favourite foster parents’ address memorized and put it in on google maps, determined to walk there himself.

          When the boy knocked on the door, he greeted Taylah with a grin. “I’m back.”

          “Oh my god, Dan,” Taylah exclaimed. “Come here.” She reached out to pull the teenager inside and out of the rain, looking him over for any wounds or sign of illness. It may have been over a year since she had last seen him, but that maternal instinct was there.

          “Can you get him a towel?” they asked, the question directed towards either of their wives before they pulled Dan into a tight hug. “Are you okay? What happened? Did you walk here?”

Wonderful || Chapter 1 Start

Sunday night, and you sleep. Sunday night and perhaps you didn’t mean to sleep, or didn’t expect to, thought that whatever work you dedicated yourself to or the excitement (or anxiety) of the looming first day of school would keep you awake. And it may well have, for some hours. But eventually you gave in to the siren call of your bed (or a chair or desk rendered deceptively comfortable by exhaustion) and slipped off into the sweet embrace of sleep… peaceful, deep, restful sleep…

…

You wake up.

It is not a comfortable awakening. Your body aches in the way one does from sleeping on a hard surface. Regardless of where you ended your night, you find that your morning is starting on a concrete floor surrounded by more concrete and metal walls. There’s a giant set of metal doors on one side of the room - hall? - and at the other end an entrance into a hallway of the same monotonous gray, running left or right into places you can’t see from your current positions. If there’s any comfort to be found in this jarring situation it’s that at least you aren’t alone. The faces around you are familiar, whether because you’d had a chance to interact with them or only seen them in passing - at the orientation, at least? Yes, these are your university yearmates. The rest of the class of 20XX, or at least a good chunk of it. All of them in states of freshly waking, the same foggy confusion in their bleary gazes as you feel.

There’s little time for more than dragging yourself fully back to consciousness. Some grumbling likely breaks out, a few alarmed reactions or sluggish questions may be started, but before any real conversation or panic can break out a new figure steps into view, coming around one of the turns into the hall.

The woman is beautiful, in a wholesome way that gives you an automatic sense of ease for a moment. She can’t be too much older than those in your group - perhaps thirty at the most - and she’s fairly tall, though not inordinately so. Something about her demeanor is so calm and assured that it draws the gaze immediately. This is someone who knows what’s going on, someone who radiates confidence and competence. Someone with answers. You find yourself instinctively looking to her with expectancy, even before she speaks, which she does, quickly enough to cut off any outbursts.

“I see everyone’s lookin’ bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. Good, right on time.” Her voice is a smooth drawl that belongs to somewhere in the Southern U.S. It keeps her words from sounding rushed despite the brisk pace of her speech. “Welcome to the WonderDome, chickadees! Now don’t get too worked up just yet, y’hear? No fuss no muss.” She reaches up with her left hand and taps lightly on one of the walls, producing a light metallic tang that draws your attention to the fact that her left forearm is also metal - a prosthetic, though a very convincing synthetic skin covers it from elbow to wrist, at which point it ends and leaves the pale grey of her robotic hand exposed.

I know it must be frustratin’ not to have all the answers you’re surely chompin’ at the bit for, but frankly, the fact is, there’s a lot about your situation that you really just don’t need to know. Here’s what you do.”

“In your pockets or purse or what have you, you’ll find a cute little tablet called an ElectroID. Looks and works a bit like a PDA, if you know what those are. If not, well, y’all’re the best and the brightest, I’m sure you’ll figure it out. Those are gonna be real important, so hang on to ‘em. They got maps of the buildin’, some basic information on y’all, and they’ll serve as the keys for your dorm rooms, too. They’ve also got the Rules on ‘em, in case you ever need a memory refresh, but I’ll go ahead and spell out the real pertinent bit: You’re trapped here. You’ve all been selected to be part of a great undertakin’, and it’s mandatory. Non-negotiable, sorry. The only way out is through, lil darlin’s, so I suggest you save us all some time an’ get used to that real quick. The good news is there is a way out. All you gotta do is play a game, so don’t go panickin’ or whatnot. There, that’s everythin’ you need to know for now. We’re not gonna start playin’ right off the bat, don’t you fret, the rest will be explained as it comes up. For now, why don’t y’all take a chance to process, adjust all nice like, and take a look around. You’re free to go anywhere that ain’t behind a locked door.”

She turns, gives you all a little wave with her robotic hand, and starts trotting out of sight without further ado or any pause for questions or responses, ignoring any reactions any of you may have already begun. “See y’all later! You be good, now~!”

Spoilers for Foxtel’s Wentworth (S1-S6) ahead.

I loved Wentworth because it never truly depicted good / evil as black and white. Characters were often given benefit of doubt and the protagonists were not always made out to be heroes. And this is one rare show with three strong middle-aged female antagonists, namely Jacs Holt (played by Kris McQuade), Joan Ferguson (Pamela Rabe) and Sonia Stevens (Sigrid Thornton). Credit to materdisciplina for bringing the three to my attention.

This triumvirate had a hold over the women in Wentworth prison over the course of seasons, Jacs as prison Top Dog, Joan Ferguson as Governor, while Sonia affected the women through her Green Wall / workshop project. It is interesting that it’s always right before the antagonists are met with their (near) end that they start laying some hard hitting monologues of truth.

As a matriarch, Jacs has control over and loyalty of her son Brayden. Her criticsm of Bea Smith in S1E10 "Checkmate" was that Bea should have stood up against domestic abuse sooner instead of taking it for years, that Debbie was raised weak & sheltered, making her vulnerable to influence. It hits home and causes Bea to attack Jacs fatally.

“I’m sure you wondered how she’d turn out. After all those years of her knowing what you let your husband do to you? Would she let a man do that to her too? Would she just sit back and take it? Debbie made it easy for Brayden. She was so desperate for attention that when he gave it to her she let him do anything. Sex. Drugs. All the signs were there, but you ignored them. Sonia’s delivery to Liz about being weak and settling for a second rate life is a strong one. I don’t see it as a message that is just targeted at Liz or a gender, it criticizes mediocrity as a whole, something that has become normalized and accepted in the modern world.

Joan’s monologue during her lynching in S5E11 “Coup De Grace“ surprised me. It was rather unexpected that she would piss off all the other inmates at the moment when she is most vulnerable, but in true Joan Ferguson fashion she does it anyway, staying integral to her own convictions. It is the cold truth that no inmate wants to hear, that if they had the discipline and ability to govern their own emotions and actions, most of them would not be in prison in the first place. What follows only proves it because it quickly descends into violence from the angry mob. The underlying message criticizes the herd mentality and the lack of individual integrity / personal strength to follow through one’s convictions. Referencing also to Kaz Proctor at that moment, obviously wanting to be no part of the lynching but is unable to stop it. In contrast, Vera Bennett does everything she can to prevent another death.
