          Bobby holding Jee-Yun might’ve seemed inconsequential and small, but it had taken ages for Sam to get comfortable enough with him and other men. When he and Maddie had first moved (though fled was probably a more accurate description), he’d been nervous around every man he met, but with a little work and therapy, it had lessened before spiking after Jee-Yun had been born when he’d refused to let Howie or any other men hold his little sister, but after his momma had left, he had to accept that Howie wasn’t there to hurt any of them and he was the only one who could take care of them. Now, Howie, Bobby, and the rest of their big family taking care of the baby was normal.

          Baby Jee crying still made him upset though. He really didn’t like when she cried, but babies cried all the time, right? Maybe Bobby was right. Just teething. He easily accepted that he cried a lot when he was a baby because even if he didn’t remember being Jee-Yun’s age, he did remember crying a lot when they still lived with Daddy. He remembered Momma crying too. He didn’t want anyone to have to be sad or scared or hurt anymore.

          “She’s not hurt? Or sad?” he asked anxiously, confirming that she was okay before he’d consider going out to the firetruck despite how much he wanted to. He loved the firetruck and the ambulance. It was really cool that they got to save people in them.
