Mutant Chinese Giant Salamander

Mona Lisa is the leader of Team Delta. She was kidnapped and mutated at the age of 12 just a couple months before Donnie and Raph. She would see them as well as Leo and Mikey in passing at the facility as they each got check ups and tests done in “the lab” but never had more interaction than that.

She has a very nonchalant yet playful personality. She loves to poke fun at people (especially Usagi) and tease them in subtle ways. She’s also very serious however, especially on missions and when it comes to her team’s safety and success. She has immense control over her reaction and emotions which leads her to be very good at keeping a cool head and coming up with plans in the heat of battle. Despite this she has a fire of passion deep in her and if she loses control the fire easily turns into an inferno that can be very difficult to put out.

Hiroshi Usagi/Usagi Hiroshi ( 飛呂士 ウサギ / ウサギ 飛呂士 ) (prefers to be referred to by family name Usagi)

Mutant Snowshoe Hare

Usagi second in command of Team Delta and was originally up for consideration to be their leader but was beat out by Mona. He was kidnapped and mutated into a snowshoe hare at the age of 11 and is a year older than Mona.

He has a very serious, no nonsense, and slightly grumpy attitude and can be easily irritated if he believes someone to not be taking a situation seriously. This is due to his belief in strict self discipline and duty to those he’s meant to protect, whether that be his team or humanity as a whole. He wants deeply to do what he believes is morally right and make the adults in his life proud. Despite this he occasionally does let his guard down to indulge in humor or relax in the presence of his friends/family. There is a tension between him and Mona from his belief that he failed in being good enough to lead their team as he is the only “__1” mutant to not be selected to be leader for his designated group. He is constantly trying to make up for whatever perceived flaws he displayed in his testing.

Mutant hybrid White-Lipped Tree Frog Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtle

Venus is third in command of Team Delta. She was mutated at the age of 6 into a hybrid white-lipped tree frog kemp’s ridley sea turtle and is the only hybrid mutant to ever survive, even if it was just barely. Due to complications in her mutation she is a quadruple amputee and has prosthetics for all four limbs designed personally by her “guardian” Draxum.

Venus has a very calm and private disposition. She is also very guarded and slow to trust; very few people have even heard her talk. When you do earn her trust however she is fiercely loyal and protective.

Mutant Turquoise Dwarf Gecko

Mondo is the fourth and last in command of Team Delta. He was mutated into a turquoise dwarf gecko at the age of 8.

He remembers much of his life before mutation however he wasn’t fond of that life or his old family and tho he knows it’s messed up he believes that being mutated was one of the best things to happen to him if it meant it brought he and his teammates/family together. Mondo has a very laid back and chill personality. He’s very go with the flow and works best with little to no plan and lots of room to improvise. His jokester personality can be quite frustrating to deal with but he just wants to make those he cares about smile and relax whenever they can. He’d do anything for them when it comes down to it, even get serious.

Late last year, we received official confirmation that the Electronic Entertainment Expo, E3, was no more. The signs were everywhere, as they'd failed to hold any meaningful event past the pandemic and were fumbling even before then, yet it was still kind of sad to see the news spelled out officially - that the gaming community's Christmas Day was going away forever, in favor of the more condensed, streamlined, and in general a lot less charming Summer Games Fest. And yeah, the excitement for game reveals and trailers is still prominent with Keighley's shows, though a tool he may be, but...there was a sort of memetic energy to the E3 shows in particular, the per-company press conferences that were always subtly coated in delicious cringe, those are now effectively lost. Though the show may be lost, the memories remain - and I'll always remember just how fun each of the SiIvaGunner channel's per-show channel events were, from Season 1 to Season 4 Episode 1.

I did indeed cover a rip related to the E3 show once before on here, with Take Me Home, Country Snow - a rip focusing on the ever-memetic quality of Bethesda's Todd Howard. That's a well-spread joke in the gaming community, yet Too big, huh, my nuts are too big how about that focuses on far more of an in-joke, one finally meeting its natural endpoint after years of build-up: Ridley, before his debut in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, being criticized as being far too big to be fit for the game's roster. "Bigley" became a minor meme on the Miiverse forums on Wii U/3DS, and it was just generally a very funny idea to spread about - that a character was simply too massive to ever possibly be able to be used in fighting.

It's likely that Too big, huh, my nuts are too big how about that wasn't even made with the intention of releasing after Ridley's reveal during Nintendo's 2018 E3 show, but withholding the rip to release it with the perfect timing just adds to the joke even further - the visuals of the rip present Ridley as the surprise new character, only to reveal that his character size is so astronomically big that the game literally cannot load him into a match. The rip's audio joke itself is initially based on a Season 1 classic, Vs. Meta Horat, mashing up Ridley's theme with The Nutshack theme, before taking on a very patently Twonko twist - you may recognize his name from Crompton Racing, and back when he was still with the channel he was one of the biggest proponents and contributors to making Jake Paul a recurring joke on the channel. The rip effectively turns into a - funny enough - BIGGER version of Vs. Meta Horat, still featuring The Nutshack prominently, but overriding it with It's Everyday Bro and other sources. Most notably, and funniest to me personally, is the line iconic to many Smash Bros. fans of the time before Ultimate's release - "RIDLEY'S BIG AS SHIT!".

I talked yesterday about the feeling of, admiring rips and media in general from a distance - that I'm able to love rips like Guilty Eyes Creeper despite holding no real attachment to the Love Live franchise or its music. Yet with clips from Shokio's old infamous Ridley discussion video, that voicebyte that was heard so often in so many hilarious contexts before even the release of Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS, it does feel oh so rewarding to feel fully in-on-the-joke with Too big, huh, my nuts are too big how about that. The signature styles of the two rippers of course helps make it an immensely fun listen, but it really was just the comedic timing of the moment and execution of the joke that sealed the deal for this becoming one of my favorite 2018 rips.

Today in Computer History (01/24/2024):

On this day forty years ago, Apple Computers released the first All-In-One PC with a GUI to see mass-market success. The Macintosh (later called the Macintosh 128k or the “thin Mac”) was equipped with an m68k microprocessor, 128 kilobytes of ram, a 9” 512x342px CRT display, and a single 3.5” floppy drive, all housed in a beige box.

The commercial for the Macintosh, directed by Ridley Scott, was titled “1984” and aired during Super Bowl XVIII two days before launch (watch it here!). The computer also came with a keyboard and single-button mouse. It sold over 70,000 units within the first one hundred days of being available.

ENT Rewatch Starlog, 24 March, 2024: Episode 3.17 “Hatchery”

Still en route to Azati Prime, the NX-01 finds a crashed Xindi Insectoid ship on a planet. Searching, they find a small attack vessel and what would seem to be a hatchery full of eggs. One of the eggs sprays Archer in defense and gives him a nasty rash.

Reed and Major Hayes are still arguing a bit, but Hayes impresses Reed with his analysis of the attack vessel, using simulations to figure out exactly how Enterprise can destroy the vessels with relative ease. Their understanding is soon tested however. Archer, initially wanting just to see if they can protect the hatchery, arguing that it might be a goodwill gesture to prove to the Xindi that humans aren't just savage, begins to become obsessive with those thoughts.

When T’Pol stands in the way of him actually giving up a large quantity of anti-matter to keep the hatchery functioning, he relieves her of duty. When a Xindi ship DOES appear Reed uses the tactic Hayes found and destroys it. Archer relieves HIM of duty as well, placing Hayes in command when he goes to the surface to install the anti-matter.

Tucker breaks T’Pol and Reed out, and there is a small mutiny on board to seize control from Hayes while Trip goes to the surface to stop Archer.

The eggs are hatching and Archer is caring for them at the expense of all else. As Reed and T’Pol stop Hayes and the MACOs, Tucker stuns Archer. Phlox is able to discover that the shot to the face Archer took earlier altered his brain chemistry, making him imprint on the hatchlings as a caretaker.

They leave with Archer recovering, Hayes understanding that things in space are not always just black and white, and 19 little skittery Xindi babies on the ground which they believe will be all right until a ship can arrive.

Something interesting about this episode is Archer is actually correct I think at the beginning. He cites his great-grandfather following the law of land warfare during the Eugenics War, and indeed, these are children—mammals or not—and non-combatants. There is an interesting moral conundrum here between the NX-01’s mission to save Earth and saving these children; the show never quite comes out to say they SHOULD have just let them die, which I am glad of, but it also is a little ambiguous in what it is suggesting an Archer NOT under the influence of a brain-altering chemical should have done. 

Along with that, to make this story happen, the show is guilty of something I see a LOT in science fiction, so I can’t even just blame Enterprise for this one: The crew, in environmental suits, get readings that they have found a breathable atmosphere, and immediately open up or take off their helmets. WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT??? As one of their spacefaring successors will note: Space is disease and danger wrapped in darkness and silence. Archer, if you’d kept your helmet on THIS COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED! (Props to Ridley Scott's original "Alien" which had the facehugger melt through the helmet.)

The Reed/Hayes stuff is good here as they continue to understand one another. I may need to write the follow-on fix-it fan fic where after the Federation is formed, Reed takes command of a starship with his husband, Starfleet transfer Commander Jay Hayes-Reed (who miraculously survives what we thought was his death), as first officer.

Finally, look! They DO have a regular uniform that fits Jolene Blalock!

Next Voyage: Enterprise arrives at “Azati Prime” and finds the weapon! Can they destroy it?
