For anyone paying attention in the Jacksepticeye Community, today’s video - Transference - was a hell of a firestarter as far as Blazing Fandom Infernos go.

After startling everyone with a constantly-changing, zalgo-text-including video title (all six of which are shown above), community theorists were able to pick this video apart frame by frame to find all the hidden goodies our lovely Team Septic hid there for us. There were a lot of super sneaky single-frame Easter Eggs (kudos to Robin) and they require a bit of frame-by-frame searching to find, or some major digging through the Transference tag here on Tumblr...so to make things a little easier, I’ve created a Master Post detailing what the community found between the pixels.

For starters, The Title™. At first, we all believed that YouTube had goofed again and the video had simply been posted with its original file title - as it has happened before. But no, this turned out not to be the case, because shortly after the video went up the title...changed. Only slightly. The text had begun to glitch, and it wasn’t too long after that when the glitching words “HAVE YOU SEEN HIM” appeared alongside the video in its place. Next came something a little closer to an actual episode title, along with an official thumbnail (shown below)...then we got a jumbled, zalgo’d title, the capital letters of which spelled out “HELP”. It was an entire hour after the original upload time that Episode 2 of Transference was in a normal state of upload, complete with thumbnail, free of any zalgo and (seemingly) back to normal.

Except it wasn’t. It still isn’t. Just look at the thumbnail:

I don’t know about you, but there’s something eerily familiar about this image.

Red lights and glitching eyes. As in most videos that appeared during the Egopocalypse back in May, red lights can be seen glowing in the background...and if you look closely at Jack’s right (our left) eye, it’s green, glitching, distorted.

And we haven’t even begun to touch the contents of the video.

04:05 - “Crystals”

Hidden behind a natural glitch within the game, a familiar face can be seen. It’s not clear whether it’s Anti or Jack, because while the person is wearing the same shirt as Jack is in the corner, the coloration is iconic. It’s interesting to note too, that while the glitches don’t always move between frames, the eyes do. Watching eyes, staring straight at the camera, that don’t stay still when everything else is.

14:10 & 14:11 - “Red Hallway”

This pair of appearances both came at a moment that put most viewers on the edge of their seats, whether they caught the hidden images or not. In Jack’s words from this same segment of the game:

“I do not like that...standing at the end of a fuckin’ - red hallway, silhouetted like that? Big fear.”

This is a clear reference to the red hallway scene with Chase at the end of “Dark Silence” and the images Robin snuck into Transference are from that same moment.

Perhaps this is a clue that it’s Chase, not Jack, who is playing this game? After all, the reason so many people were excited for Sean to play it is because of the parallels to the Egos, specifically Anti and Chase. Glitches, digital distortions, a red hallway...a broken family, a mother trying to leave a father and taking the child with her. While the story is different from Chase’s, the parallels are evident, and it wouldn’t be a big surprise if Jack had noticed it too and had planned accordingly. Though I suppose we’ll have to wait and see...

14:52 - “Harmonies”

This one lasted for only a few seconds, and it was more subtle and undertoned than the others. Jack, leaning his head to the side - the “Neck Thing” - and a visual lag. We’ve seen this effect before, and every time it shows up, all signs point to Anti.

20:12 - “Eyes”

Another familiar scene, hidden behind another glitch. (Kudos again to Robin, because holy shit this one’s good.) In game, Jack was being run down by the same distorted monster that has been appearing again and again throughout the game...and its approach was very similar to how Anti approached Chase in that infamous Red Hallway scene. So of course, after a few frames, the Glitch Bitch himself makes an appearance right behind the in-game distortion. You can see the shadow of his nose, the dark shapes of his eyes, and in the bottom-right corner the shoulder of his shirt can be seen. Just like here, in “Dark Silence”:

45:42 - “Still Here”

Did you think Anti would leave without saying goodbye? :3c Of course not!

In the single frame between Jack’s outro and Sam’s tank showing up, our glitchy boy makes one final appearance in the form of a final, sinister side-profile that supersedes the little window Jack has been playing from this whole time.

So what can we take from all this?

As far as I’m concerned, we don’t have nearly enough of the pieces to put this little puzzle together...but I have two ideas, one of which feels much more likely than the other.

1) This is Jack. Clearly, Anti hasn’t finished playing with our favorite boy, and he’s making it quite apparent that he’s in control. Jack may be the one on the screen, but Anti’s the one pulling the strings. Shameless and comedic HDWGH tour plugs, that same familiar sense of humor, plus jokes about “I thought speed was key?” from the previous video, and a lot of signs point to this being the same old irish bean we know and love...but (unknowingly) under Anti’s command.

2) The person we see in this video is Chase. Last we saw of our favorite trickshot master, Chase was being ambushed by Anti himself...and we haven’t exactly heard from him since. There are blatant parallels between this game and Chase’s life, though the story being told in the game is a much darker one, painting the father is the clear villain and a madman. (I would go so far as to say the game is a nightmare version of what Chase has been going through in his own life.) Sean mentions a fear of red hallways, of silhouetted faceless people standing at the end...and that’s what Chase went through at the end of “Dark Silence”. There was also a line in the game where Benjamin says: “I just wish we could go back.” Sean automatically say this in response:

“I just wish we could go back...to the way thing were before.”

Now, where have we heard that before? Chase, in the video for “Tie”. While one could also make the argument that Chase has been talking to Jack throughout his coma (and has probably said that same phrase at Jack’s bedside), and it’s possible that Jack’s automatic response could have been just a connection of a familiar phrase to something he’s heard before, it’s much more likely that it’s Chase. The way it was said, the absolute sadness and loss in his voice...that felt more genuine than on offhand comment.

Other things Sean said that raised a red flag for Chase:

“What’s wrong with this dad? Is he an alcoholic…?”

“Your wife, the dog… what about me? No one seems to care about me…”

“He was just focused on his work so she wanted to leave…” [A pause, where he looks rather forlorn]

Plus the lighting in the facecam? It’s not red. It’s. Not. Red. One of the key differences between Chase videos and Coma!Jack videos back in May was the lighting...specifically red lighting. Chase is a new player in this Nightmare World that Anti has created, so clearly isn’t as deep into the nightmare state that Jack is.

Again, there’s not enough evidence for us to come to a clear conclusion on any of this...so I suppose we’ll have to wait and see what else Jack and Robin are planning on sending our way. After all, October is just around the corner...

NO MORE THAN 5% SAY UNIONS – Local trade unions today said they were now prepared to meet Government halfway on the controversial National Social Responsibility Levy (NSRL), even as they announced major plans for a march on Parliament next Tuesday in a show of opposition to the measure, which took effect last week. The decisions were taken at this afternoon’s joint meeting of shop stewards from the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU), the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW), the Barbados Union of Teachers (BUT) and the Barbados Secondary Teachers’ Union (BSTU) at Solidarity House. Following the closed meeting, which got under way at 5:15 p.m. and lasted just over two hours, NUPW President Akanni McDowall announced to reporters that the unions were now willing to accept a 50 per cent reduction in the NSRL after they had demanded either a total repeal of the onerous tax measure or the introduction of a coping subsidy for their members in their meeting with Prime Minister Freundel Stuart, Minister of the Finance Chris Sinckler and other Government officials at Government Headquarters two weeks ago. At the end of the meeting, during which animated voices were clearly heard coming from the packed auditorium, BSTU President Mary Redman also explained that Tuesday’s march from Queen’s Park, The City, to Parliament was only phase one of ramped up action by the unions, which remained adamant that the NSRL would only spell undue hardship for their members. Redman, who had earlier announced that the unions would be dispatching official correspondence to Stuart, Leader of the Opposition Mia Mottley and the two Independent Members of Parliament, further revealed that there would be the symbolic delivery of the correspondence to these same officials. After that, Redman said the unions were prepared to give the Stuart administration a short period to change its decision on the levy, which was increased in the May 30 Budget from two per cent to ten per cent. Redman also warned that should Government fail to comply with the unions’ demands, more militant action would follow. (BT)

SYMBOLIC MARCH FOR STARTERS – The island’s four major trade unions aren’t ready to take drastic action in response to Government’s hike of the National Social Responsibility Levy (NSRL). Related articles 5 p.m. deadline Sir Roy's parting shots BWU to fight for domestic workers... At least not just yet. The next set of action which the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU), the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW), Barbados Union of Teachers (BUT) and the Barbados Secondary Teachers’ Union (BSTU) will take to protest the increase in the NSRL from two to ten per cent will be a purely symbolic one. Following a two-hour meeting at the BWU’s Solidarity House, St Michael headquarters yesterday evening, a decision was made by its members to stage a march from Queen’s Park to Parliament Buildings on Tuesday, where letters will be delivered to the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition and the two Independent members of Parliament. NEW SCHOOL HEADS COME SEPTEMBER – When the new academic year starts in September, many schools will be greeting a new head. Principals have been breaking the news to their staff and students that they would be moving on, according to school sources. The shifts are coming in light of three secondary principals retiring – Jefferson Phillips from Frederick Smith Secondary School, Vere Parris from Combermere and Pauline Benjamin from Springer Memorial – as well as the closure of the Alma Parris Memorial Secondary School. However, some parents and teachers were only made aware yesterday and the WEEKEND NATION understands not all of them were pleased. (WN)

SHAKE UP OF SCHOOL PRINCIPALS - A shake-up of secondary school principals is under way. When the new term begins in September, Captain Michael Boyce, the current head of The Lester Vaughan School, will be take up the reins at Frederick Smith Secondary School in Trents, St James, Barbados TODAY understands. Boyce is among five principals and one deputy being moved, with two other deputies being elevated to act as principal. With the retirement of Vere Parris, principal of the Combermere School, he will be succeeded by Coleridge & Parry head Vincent Fergusson. Also going on retirement leave is Springer Memorial School Principal Pauline Benjamin, who will be replaced by her current deputy Mitchelle Maxwell as acting principal. Deputy Principal Bradston Clarke of Alma Parris Memorial School, which shuts down permanently tomorrow, is set to become the deputy at Springer. An official source also told Barbados TODAY that St George Secondary School Principal Sonja Goodridge is to be transferred to Coleridge & Parry, and Dennis Browne, who is currently at the helm at Grantley Adams Memorial will replace Goodridge. Browne’s vacated position will be filled by Valdez Francis, principal of the closing Alma Parris Memorial School. Meantime, Deputy Principal of The Lester Vaughan School Tanya Harding will act in the post of principal at the Cane Garden institution, the official source said. Efforts to reach Chief Education Officer Karen Best for comment on the transfers were unsuccessful up to the time of publication. (BT)

DISTRESSED PARENTS - It was a mix of anger and bewilderment as parents of students attending Alma Parris Memorial Secondary School filed out of the Ministry of Education’s Constitution Road headquarters this afternoon following a 2 p.m. meeting with officials. Some parents also expressed shock over the sudden announcement of the school’s closure a week ago, but it was the revelation made today of where the displaced students would be placed come September that caused the most frenzy. With the planned closure of the Speightstown-based remedial institution at the end of the current school term, parents were officially informed this afternoon that affected students – 16 years or under – will be going to St George Secondary, Darryl Jordan Secondary and Grantley Adams Secondary School next term. However, those students who are over 16 have been taken out of the secondary school system altogether and are to be enrolled in skills training programmes with either Barbados Vocational Training Board (BVTB) or the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polyclinic. The biggest issue for parents, besides the location of the three schools, was whether their wards would be able to keep up with their new curricula. Fabian Clarke, a parent of a second former, was generally dissatisfied with the amount of information given by the officials today during the hour-long meeting. And though he has already resigned himself to the fact that he really does not have a choice in the matter, he told Barbados TODAY he was genuinely concerned about whether his son, who is a slow learner, would be able to cope with his new school syllabus. STRAUGHN ACCUSES GOVT OF SNEAKING IN BACKDOOR TAX – Insurance premiums are likely to rise, hitting the transportation sector particularly hard, due to a “backdoor” tax which Government plans to impose on insurance companies, an Opposition Barbados Labour Party (BLP) spokesman on economic matters has charged. BLP candidate for Christ Church East Central Ryan Straughn told party supporters at the Graydon Sealy Secondary School last night that not only was the Freundel Stuart administration trying to sneak the tax in, it planned to make it retroactive to last year. “The Government has recently introduced the tax through the backdoor . . . . What is particularly sinister about this is that the Government wants to introduce tax on insurance companies, but essentially they want to take the tax back to apply it from April 2016,” Straughn charged. The charge could not immediately be verified, however, the economist claimed that if the insurances companies were forced to pay the levy, Barbadians would be faced with increased premiums when they renew their policies. He said while ordinary Barbadians would feel the squeeze, public service vehicle operators and motorists on a whole would suffer most. “You will have to pay insurance on those vans and those people will also face some burden. You as a motorist would also have an increase in your premiums,’ he said. Straughn also slammed the administration for failing to do “the decent thing, come to the public and announce to the country that you are going to levy taxes on the people”. Worryingly, he said, there was no notice through the Barbados Government Information Service, and “there was absolutely no mention of any tax in any insurance company in any budget or in any ministerial statement”. BARBADOS SIGNS BOUNDARY AGREEMENT WITH ST. LUCIA – Prime Minister Freundel Stuart and his St Lucian counterpart Allen Chastanet today signed a maritime boundary agreement, as Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Government were ending their 38th annual summit in St George’s, Grenada. In a statement following the ceremony, Stuart said the accord demonstrated “the commitment to foster closer regional integration and closer cooperation that is still alive with the regional grouping”. He also pointed out that the twin issues of ocean governance and the blue economy were becoming increasing topical. He also lauded the speed with which the agreement was reached, saying it spoke volumes about the “breadth, the depth and the tenor of regional cooperation and the spirit of unity that have traditionally characterized CARICOM interstate relations”. Stuart also reminded that CARICOM member states not only exist in close proximity to each other, but also share a history and cultural identity that will facilitate “an enduring bond of kinship among our peoples”. St. Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines also signed a maritime agreement today. Two years ago, Barbados and St Vincent and the Grenadines signed a similar treaty. (BT)

AMENDMENTS COMING TO FIREARMS ACT – With concern that gun violence is at an all-time high, Government has announced plans to amend the Firearms Act in effort to tighten control and stem the inflow of guns. That revelation came from Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Attorney General Deborah Payne, who did not give any details, only noting that the authorities would speed up the country’s compliance in the landmark Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) of 2014, which would in turn significantly curtail gun importation into the region. By mandating that its signatories put national controls in place, the ATT broadens the network of national-level controls in a way that gives the international community a new tool to identify and interdict the illegal trade in arms. The increase in the number of countries that regulate this trade also means a drop in the volume of unregulated trade. Before the ATT, only just over 50 countries had control systems in place. Today, 92 countries, including Barbados, have come on board. The Permanent Secretary stressed that it was only through accurate reporting that consistent application of the ATT could be achieved, and she urged the region’s signatories to play their part in this respect. However, she asserted that consideration should be given to those who were lagging in their reporting protocols, since the process could be quite challenging. (BT)

GOVERNMENT EAGER TO WORK WITH TRUMP ADMINISTRATION – Barbados is eager to increase its cooperation with the United States (US), following the signing last December by the US government of the US-Caribbean Strategic Engagement Act. Acting Prime Minister Richard Sealy gave this assurance Wednesday night as he joined with US Ambassador Linda Taglialatela and other officials in local activities marking the 241st birthday of the United States. Just last month the US Agency for International Development released a programme of action covering several areas, including security, prosperity, energy, diplomatic engagement, health and education. Sealy said those areas were consistent with the strategic interests of Barbados, adding that the island looked forward to the early convening of the regional trade and investment conference highlighted in the US strategy. In her address, the US diplomat pointed to the recently staged Operation Tradewinds exercise saying it “was a perfect example of our robust and effective partnerships that prepare us to respond to any threat or event. NO JOB CUTS AT CHEFETTE DESPITE NSRL, SAYS HALOUTE – Boasting that his fast food chain of restaurants “have never sent home workers”, Managing Director Ryan Haloute today said Chefette Restaurants was not about to begin cutting staff even though Government’s contentious National Social Responsibility Levy (NSRL) would prove a burden. In addition, Haloute vowed that his prices would not rise, at least for the time being, despite the levy, increases in the excise duties on petrol and the imposition of a two per cent tax on foreign exchange transactions, the latter beginning to take effect from July 17. The local business community has complained that the NSRL, which jumped from two per cent to ten per cent effective July 1, along with the other measures, would hurt business and would likely force closures and job cuts. However, Haloute today made it clear he was not among those planning to sever staff, despite the inevitable rise in the cost of doing business. Revealing that prices had not risen over the past six years, with some exceptions, the Chefette boss said the fast food chain would absorb the new taxes, although he left the door open for a change of heart. With the country’s foreign exchange deficit at a dangerously low 10.7 weeks of import cover as at the end of March this year – a long way below the recommended 14 weeks – Haloute dismissed any thoughts of his company investing outside Barbados in a bid to cushion the impact of the taxes. He said now was the time to keep the money within Barbados. (BT)

CHEFETTE DISMISSES CLAIM OF MAGGOTS FOUND IN SANDWICH – Fast food restaurant Chefette is roundly dismissing a woman who alleged on social media that she found live worms in a sandwich bought at an unnamed branch of the outlet. In fact, Managing Director Ryan Haloute today accused the woman of seeking attention, and said Chefette was ignoring her. “We actually ignore it to be honest. If someone has an experience that they are not happy with at Chefette and their first point of contact is social media, then we deem that that person is seeking attention,” Haloute said soon after donating $125,000 to three charities – Young Women Christian Association, the Precious Touch Foundation and Variety The Children’s Charity – at the company’s corporate headquarters in Wildey, St Michael. “Why would we reply to it, informing over 50,000 persons who are on our social media page, that ‘hey, this happened or didn’t happen?’ We try to promote positivity and give back to the community [instead of] responding to social media posts that are seeking attention,” he stressed. In a three-minute 37-second expletive-laden video, the woman claimed to have bought the sandwich at a Chefette branch which she did not name, and to have started eating it when she discovered “worms crawling on the sandwich”. Although she zoomed in on the sandwich in an attempt to give viewers a closer look, the image was not entirely clear. (BT)

PSVS CALL FOR ROUTE SURGERY – THE transportation system is overcrowded with about 500 public service vehicles (PSVs) and 2 200 taxis, according to owners and drivers who say revenue is taking a bit hit. Chairman of the Alliance Owners of Public Transport (AOPT) Roy Raphael has called for the implementation of a route committee, which would help to monitor and regulate the number of PSVs and taxis on the island’s roads. Raphael told the WEEKEND NATION that a suggestion had already been made to Minister of Transport and Works Michael Lashley about the setting up of the committee. “We are hoping to set up a route committee, whose main responsibility would be to regulate the number of PSVs and taxis.” (WN)

SAFE WON’T PAY UP, SAY STAFFERS – One of the island’s leading security firms is being accused of treating its employees unfairly and denying them vacation leave. William Thompson is among several security guards who have charged that SAFE Security Consultants Inc. has not granted them leave or vacation pay. Describing it as “modern-day slavery”, the 47-year-old told the WEEKEND NATION he has been working at SAFE for over three years. Thompson said during that time he had done everything in his power to get his employers to pay up, including taking his case to the Labour Department. (WN)

LANDLORD & TENANT AT ODDS – Michael Weekes is accusing a landlord of not only rendering him homeless, but also of refusing to give him back his belongings. However, as is often the case, a check with the landlord, George Caesar of Church Road, Christ Church, revealed another side to the story. An upset Weekes, a carpenter by trade, came to the NATION’s office earlier this week saying he had been evicted from his rented home back in May and had been relying on the kindness of friends ever since. To make things worse, he said multiple attempts to at least get back his belongings had failed, despite the intervention of police. (WN)

CAR SCAM VICTIM OUT OF $40,000 – When Mohammed Mohamad bought his new car, little could he have known six months later that he would be waiting outside his home for the police in the wee hours of the morning. Related articles Community expresses shock at suspected... Man survives car flip Pedestrian struck by car However, the irate man wants to know how a stolen car could have passed through the Barbados Licensing Authority so easily. Mohamad told his unfortunate tale, which went from a man happy to get a modern car to a man out thousands of dollars and forced to “bum” lifts. He said: “I bought a car in December, a 2012 Toyota Axio, worth $40 000. I met a fella who acts like a used car broker, he is a go-between buyer and seller and I got the car through him.” (WN)

COMPLAINANT ORDERED TO PAY COURT – A man who claimed to have been seriously harmed by two other men has been ordered to pay the High Court $1,500 in three months, after dropping the case. Conan Kenelm Ashby of Coles Road, Bournes Village, St George, and Shane Omar Callendar of Glebe Land, St George had been charged with causing Carlos Austin serious bodily harm with intent to maim, disable or disfigure him on September 2, 2008, and inflicting serious bodily harm on him, as well as assisting an offender. However, Austin told Madame Justice Michelle Weekes in the No. 2 Supreme Court recently that he was no longer interested in pursuing the case. Under oath and questioning by Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Donna Babb-Agard, QC, Austin maintained that he had not been threatened or promised any incentive to stop the case. Babb-Agard told Justice Weekes that the Crown was relying on Austin’s testimony to prove its case, and with his lack of interest, it had no choice but to drop the matter. The judge enforced that decision, but not before ordering Austin to pay the court costs in three months’ time with an alternative of six months in prison. The legal troubles of Coles and Callendar are not yet over, however, as they have a joint firearm charge still hanging over their heads. That case will come up for hearing in the High Court on September 19. (BT)

Two women on assault charges – Two women accused of separate incidents of assault appeared in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court Thursday. Maria Dona Wood and Lois Lorraine Yearwood were each granted $3,000 bail by Magistrate Douglas Frederick. It is alleged that Wood, a shop owner of Lemanbelle, Salters, St George, assaulted Shanique Shepherd on April 29, occasioning her actual bodily harm. There was no objection to bail from the police prosecutor after Wood denied the charge. The 42-year-old accused was ordered to return to court on October 2. Also reappearing in court on that date will be 48-year-old Yearwood. The Thompson Road, Wavell Avenue, Black Rock Road, St Michael resident is accused of causing serious bodily harm to Shawn Francis on July 4, with intent to maim, disfigure or disable. The self-employed woman was not required to plead to the indictable charge. With no objections from the prosecutor, she was released on bail with one surety. Meantime, a 35-year-old phone technician will have to successfully perform 80 hours of community if he wants to keep his criminal record clean. Ron Casper Camille of Piper Avenue, Bayville, St Michael pleaded guilty in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court to having a rock in a public place, James Street, on January 18, without lawful authority or reasonable excuse. Magistrate Frederick imposed the community service on the first-time offender after the police prosecutor outlined the facts. He will return to court on August 6 for a progress report. (BT)

LEBRAUN DEFYING THE ODDS – Lebraun Toney HAS defied the odds. Related articles Kobe in last NBA season St Winifred’s rule the surf NATION newscast November 10, 2014... And similar to namesake American basketball player Lebron James, the St Catherine’s student has scored his own slam dunk. The 11-year-old was able to rebound and score the highest amongst the boys at his school during this year’s Barbados Secondary Schools’ Entrance Examination after an eye condition caused him to miss several weeks of class. Unlike James, however, Lebraun has no basketball aspirations; he plans to either become a police officer or a fire fighter. (WN)

OUT OF KADOO – FOUR BANDS will not be enjoying the sweetest summer festival this year. The popular Grand Kadooment band Fantasy Crop Over Experience, along with the Ravurz band, will not be part of the last lap, which culminates in four weeks’ time.The other two bands that have also pulled the plug on their revelry are Foreday bands Island Fusion and Collision Entertainment. Island Fusion has also cancelled its all-inclusive cruise on the MV Harbour Master. A tall, unemployed man took his niece to see Serena and Venus Williams play each other at the United States Open on Friday of last week. The man, a free-agent football player clad in a simple black T-shirt, was briefly shown on the video board at Arthur Ashe Stadium to thunderous applause from the crowd. His response was little more than a smile, enough to light up social media with messages of support.

On Monday, the same player shared on Twitter a new advertisement by Nike featuring a close-up of his face and nine words of type that, while drawing acclaim from many, also drove other people to social media to post photos of themselves destroying their Nike gear.

Such is life for Colin Kaepernick, a hero to some and a pariah to others, who has become one of the most influential athletes in the current sports landscape, all while rarely saying a word.

It was Kaepernick who, as a quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers, sat then, after consulting a military veteran, started kneeling during the national anthem before N.F.L. games in 2016. He said he wanted to raise awareness of racism, social injustice and police brutality against “black people and people of color.”

He was soon joined in that protest by Eric Reid, a former teammate who was also by his side the other night at the Open. Their protest, which other players have continued even as Kaepernick and Reid have not been signed by any teams, continues to stir debate online, divide fans and the league owners, captivate celebrities and athletes and motivate President Trump to persistently tweet his anger over it.

But Kaepernick has kept his own voice largely out of those debates. As he works his way through a grievance against the N.F.L., accusing it of colluding to keep him out of a job, he has employed a savvy use of Twitter and other social media platforms, along with the occasional carefully staged public appearance, to make his points. And by all indicators most people are getting the message loud and clear.

In November 2017, with the reality setting in that teams were not going to sign him despite his having led the 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance after the 2012 season, GQ named Kaepernick the magazine’s Citizen of the Year. The issue was executed with Kaepernick’s permission and assistance, and he posed for photographs, but he declined to be interviewed.

In an article titled “Colin Kaepernick Will Not Be Silenced,” GQ’s editors said “he has grown wise to the power of his silence” and that Kaepernick was hoping to reclaim the driving force of the protest movement from President Trump, who the editors said had distorted it into something entirely different.

Kaepernick stayed true to that public silence as he filed a grievance against the league. Over the course of the 2017 season, Kaepernick let others point out the fact that, statistically, he was a superior option to nearly every team’s backup, and several teams’ starters. It wasn’t until April, when he accepted Amnesty International’s Ambassador of Conscience award, that he publicly discussed, in any meaningful way, the protest, what it means to him and what life is like without a team.

The speech, delivered in the Netherlands, lasted just over seven minutes.

He expressed concern that Reid had paid the same price he had for the protest and he sought to emphasize the original rationale of his protest: “As police officers continue to terrorize black and brown communities, abusing their power, and then hiding behind their blue wall of silence, and laws that allow for them to kill us with virtual impunity, I have realized that our love, that sometimes manifests as black rage, is a beautiful form of defiance against a system that seeks to suppress our humanity. A system that wants us to hate ourselves.”

Nature Speaking Without Speaking

Kaepernick’s ability to remain in the public spotlight — and at the heart of the N.F.L.’s protests — stems largely from his use of social media, where an audience in the millions follows him on multiple platforms and tracks his public appearances.

His use of social media is especially intriguing because it is often lost just how rarely the words are actually coming from Kaepernick himself. Kaepernick has posted to Twitter more than 11,000 times, but since his declaration of silence to GQ, the overwhelming majority of the posts are retweets or posts under his name where he is simply sharing the words of others.

Who he follows

The 119 Twitter accounts he follows tell a story by, for the most part, fitting into four tidy categories: political accounts, celebrities, athletes and his family members. He follows the activists DeRay Mckesson and Shaun King, the filmmaker Ava DuVernay and politically-vocal athletes like Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, Marshawn Lynch and Stephen Curry. He notably does not follow Malcolm Jenkins, the Philadelphia Eagles player who is the active player most associated with protesting during the anthem. Kaepernick and Reid were reported to have had a falling out with Jenkins last year over Jenkins’ willingness to compromise with the N.F.L. in a deal that provided $89 million for various social causes.

(Kaepernick’s following list is not all on message, however, as the lone entry that cannot seemingly fit into one of his four categories is the viral video account @ThingsWork. Staying focused is important, but finding out how to fold a Chinese dumpling is also cool.)

What he posts

Rather than posting his own thoughts, Kaepernick mostly retweets other accounts. His selection includes messages of support for protesting players, relevant news, posts by Reid and other athletes, and frequently the thoughts of his girlfriend, the radio and television host Nessa Diab, and his close friend Ameer Hasan Loggins, a doctoral candidate at the University of California at Berkeley who posts under the name @LeftSentThis. On Instagram and Facebook, where the ability to recirculate posts from others can be tricky, he still rarely posts in his own voice.

That so much of his message is delivered through the words of others only served to amplify Kaepernick’s personal posts of support to the Miami Dolphins players Kenny Stills and Albert Wilson, both of whom knelt during the anthem before a preseason game last month. He did not post, or even retweet, in support of Miami’s Robert Quinn or Philadelphia’s Jenkins, both of whom raised a fist during the anthem.

In an interesting twist, Kaepernick got a taste of his own social media medicine on Tuesday when Tom Brady, the biggest star in the N.F.L. and a player with a somewhat complicated relationship with President Trump, liked an Instagram post from GQ’s account that shared Kaepernick’s Nike ad. The wordless gesture, interpreted by many as support for Kaepernick, sent people on social media scurrying to figure out what the click could mean.

Last week, an arbitrator denied the N.F.L.’s request to have Kaepernick’s collusion complaint dismissed. The news of the decision was announced on social media by Kaepernick’s lawyer, Mark Geragos, and it was declared by many to be a significant step in Kaepernick’s ability to remain a thorn in the N.F.L.’s side, even if the bar for winning his case is fairly high.

Kaepernick, as was to be expected, kept his voice out of the mix. His personal account retweeted Geragos’s announcement along with a post by Russell Okung, a politically minded player, expanding on the decision. But Kaepernick wasted little time on his personal victory before moving on by retweeting further messages of support for the protests of Stills and Wilson, both of whom knelt again during the anthem before that night’s preseason game.

The Premier League season kicks off on August 11, and everything seems a little untidy. Given the dawn of any new campaign is invariably burdened with the type of gravitas usually only afforded to moon landings and world wars, it hardly seems presumptuous to assume the only thing left to do at this late stage would be the touching-up of pitch markings and ensuring substitutes' benches are at optimum temperature for disgruntled multimillionaire buttocks. Blind faith in football is rarely rewarded. Though as a collective, the Premier League has spent the summer playing a giant game of Brewster's Millions. With Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola morphing more and more into Richard Pryor with each passing full-back, there's a pervading sense the leading contenders will start in earnest like a Christmas table sans crackers. Something will be missing for all of them. Even withstanding the fact value in the marketplace has been warped out of all proportion by a seeming Premier League premium tax, it is a strange state of affairs that so many of the so-called top six, which with the emergence of Everton as a (semi) serious player has had to expand its waistline to accommodate a new member, look as though they will start the new campaign barely stronger than how they finished the last one. The game is awash with more broadcast revenue than it strictly knows what to do with, and it has cast it in the type of glow that had many squinting during the California Gold Rush. In other industries it would almost certainly have led to a stagnated market, at the very least a standoff. English football seems to have embraced it. There's a sense paying these spectacularly high transfer fees has become almost a badge of honour, like it was for Serie A in the 1990s. In the words of the great Kurt Vonnegut: "Another flaw in the human character is that everybody wants to build and nobody wants to do maintenance." With that in mind, for so many major issues still to be resolved at top clubs seems nothing less than careless. While Antonio Conte wrangles with Chelsea's mysterious transfer committee over bringing in four more players, according to TalkSport, Manchester United's chief magpie Jose Mourinho can't pass a microphone without reminding executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward he has delivered only half of his four targets. Liverpool and Arsenal have had similar windows in that they have both broken their transfer records in landing Mohamed Salah and Alexandre Lacazette, respectively. Across the league, no two clubs have had differing windows quite like Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur. An outlay of around £210 million for six players, including a £130 million spend on full-backs alone, could be just a starter for 10 for City. Spurs haven't spent a penny and seem in no rush to change the fact. City have registered interest in AS Monaco wonderkid Kylian Mbappe, according to the Daily Telegraph's James Ducker, despite Real Madrid having reportedly agreed a world-record £161 million fee that is starting to make Paul Pogba, at £89 million, look quite the snip. More realistic is a reunion between Guardiola and Sanchez. If he fancies starting the season with the world's most expensive goalkeeper, Ederson Moraes, playing behind a back four comprising four of the five dearest defenders in history, a bid for Van Dijk may be in the offing. According to Stuart Brennan of the Manchester Evening News, Real Sociedad's Inigo Martinez is another option if Guardiola doesn't rate his chances of getting a full season out of Vincent Kompany. It seems he has already decided on Nicolas Otamendi and Eliaquim Mangala. The pair may be two of the 10 most expensive defenders ever, but alas they are to defending what Boris Johnson is to foreign diplomacy. In private quarters, even those signing the cheques would probably concede to having paid over the odds for Kyle Walker and Benjamin Mendy. Paying a premium to get business done early isn't cheap but can often provide the marginal gains that make the difference over a long season. Though City might not have finished their recruitment, what they have done is give the six players brought in already every opportunity to adjust to life at a new club in a new city and, in all but one case, a new country before the big kick-off. Mourinho's sneering to reporters about the £45 million fee City paid for Walker has the feel of posturing, with faux outrage at clubs paying "crazy" figures for "normal" players giving off the distinct whiff of old money cocking a snook at new money. Wearing a fur coat and no knickers never bothered him when he was spending Roman Abramovich's cash at Chelsea as though it had a sell-by date. If Woodward would sanction the extra £10 million or so that would probably land him Eric Dier or Nemanja Matic, the Portuguese would be the proverbial pig in excrement. It's the same with Ivan Perisic. Ducker reported the difference between Inter Milan's valuation and United's is £9 million. Given he's almost certainly not worth the £40 million United are willing to pay, what's another £9 million between friends? God, it's addictive spending other people's money. No wonder football managers love it. Most United supporters would happily pass on the Croatian if it meant more playing time for Anthony Martial. They will be less forgiving if they start the new campaign relying on the 36-year-oldMichael Carrick to dictate the tempo of games from deep. Bayern Munich midfielder Renato Sanches would be ideal, with John Percy of the Daily Telegraph saying Chelsea are also keen on the Portugal international. The addition of Romelu Lukaku will give them a more dynamic element than Zlatan Ibrahimovic up top, even if replacing his 28-goal contribution is hardly a gimme for the Belgian. Victor Lindelof arrives from Benfica highly rated, but given United had the second stingiest defence in the league last season, conceding just 29 goals, the Swede's presence is unlikely to unduly affect their campaign one way or another. It's at the other end where United have problems, with the 54 goals they plundered less than Bournemouth. After 10 games last season, United were eighth and eight points off the top. Mourinho will be acutely aware there is no margin for a false start again this time around. One of the last unchallenged truisms in football is the idea slow starts to a season are much more palatable than slow climaxes, as though double points are awarded in April and May than they are in August and September. The best way to avoid unproductive bedding-in periods is to make sure marque signings aren't jetting halfway across the world on deadline day to complete deals that could have been done in July. The only consolation Mourinho will glean from Guardiola's march on him in terms of recruitment is the fact City's spend to date is already a record for a single club in any one transfer window. While his managerial counterparts quarrel over which one of them is the hardest done to—there must be something in the water at Chelsea because Conte is sounding an awful lot like Mourinho at the minute—Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino exudes inner peace. He could be a Buddhist monk were it not for that temper of his. In not signing a solitary player to date, it's almost as though he is goading his fellow coaches, "Lads, ever thought about coaching what you've got?" After selling Walker to Manchester City, rather than trying to sign someone like, to pluck a name out of the air, Danilo, as his replacement, he promoted from within the more than capable Kieran Trippier, a City academy graduate. It is rare pretty much to the point of making Pochettino unique that a Premier League boss is willing to embrace the following Paul Newman adage: "I have steak at home, so why should I go out for hamburger?" It will be interesting to see whether Pochettino carries on in the same line of thought with regard to whether to bid for Ross Barkley or continue to blood Harry Winks. There's probably not £40 million difference between the pair of them. The balancing act between continuity and ensuring ennui doesn't set in at a football club is one of such fine margins fear of the latter invariably impinges on the former. To an extent, debt accrued by Tottenham's move from White Hart Lane into a new stadium, along with chairman Daniel Levy's unwavering belief that football is not a game to be played in a big top, has if not determined, then kept Pochettino's holistic approach in check. He certainly seems attuned to the Steve Jobs mantra: "If you really look closely, most overnight successes took a long time." The case has even been made for Spurs having had the best transfer window so far. Such a suggestion has just a hint of piousness about it, and it's one usually made by the type of person who takes great pride in not owning a television. Or as one City supporter put it rather aptlyvia Twitter: "When Sergio Aguero slammed that 93rd-min title winner in, all I could think of was 'I hope one day we can balance the books like Spurs do.'" Still, after a second-placed finish, if Spurs lose only Walker while staying true to a wage structure that is starting to look positively Dickensian in comparison to rivals' (Levy would make a wonderful Scrooge), they will surely start the new campaign as the most exciting young side in Europe. The nefarious dismantling job that has been done on Monaco will no doubt have provided food for thought with regard to next summer. The idea the wage structure won't prove a glass ceiling is a nice one; it's also fanciful in the extreme. ThoughLevy's shrewdness over contracts means he should be able to keep the nucleus of Pochettino's team together, recruitment is only going to get more difficult. Convincing Spurs' existing band of brothers the club is on the cusp of something special, historic even, is one thing. Convincing a player who has not been in on it from the start to buy into the same vision, on half the wages they could get elsewhere, will be nigh on impossible. Spurs are good enough that good-enough players are no longer good enough. There's nothing inherently wrong with the likes of Vincent Janssen andMoussaSissoko, it's just not one of them is even close to being at the level to break into Spurs' gilded XI and stay there. Conte's comments about having wanted Walker before City ensnared him, while confessing Harry Kane stirs his loins like no other will have pricked up ears in Spurs' boardroom, possibly their dressing room too. While he has joined Mourinho in chorusing Tottenham's ruddy health, his rhetoric had an undercurrent of rancour to it. "My question is this: what are Tottenham's expectations?" Contesaid recently, perPercy. "If they don't win the title, it's not a tragedy. If they don't arrive in the Champions League, it's not a tragedy." Over the course of his soliloquy, he stressed failure was not a tragedy for Spurs six times. The lady doth protest too much, methinks. If Pochettino shares a glass of wine with Conte this season, he wants to make sure he surreptitiously swaps glasses with the Italian before taking a sip. He definitely doesn't want to accept a cigar off him. It's been a strange old summer for Conte. On signing a new deal, the Italian confessed last season's title-winning exertions left him exhausted, which when coupled with doubts over whether Chelsea's board shared his long-term vision for the club, led him to consider his future in England, according to Gianluca Di Marzio. Now he's staying, it looks like this season will be no less eventful than the last one. There's certainly no chance of stasis at Chelsea. Jettisoning 22-goal top scorer Diego Costa via text message was a demonstration of his ruthlessness, while seemingly deeming Matic surplus to requirements is quite the call too. Rare is it a championship-winning side is broken up by a manager's volition. Though it cuts against the grain of the pervading obsession with newness, it's worth pointing out Costa and Matic are both pretty bloody good.
