Beta Headcanons:

Ever once and awhile I get obsessed with omegaverse world building and go on a deep dive through omegaverse content. I’ve come to the conclusion that some people are super boring especially when it comes to betas. Why must betas be normal humans? This is a fictional world. You can do whatever you want, be creative. Normal humans are boring!!! (Disclaimer: do whatever you want I just like ranting). Sure most of this is because every quiz I take says I’m a beta and I want to feel cool but that doesn’t matter because betas deserve more love.

Scents/Scent Changing:

Betas tend to have more unidentifiable scents. While certain Betas will have particular scents like their Alpha and Omega counterparts most just smell something along the lines of: sweet, outdoorsy, fruity, etc. A Beta’s scent is still unique to them rarely do they smell like something particular (ex: apples, smoke, pine, etc)

Betas have very sensitive noses and are able to tell even the subtlest change in scent. Many Betas go into medical and rescue fields due to being able to smell oddities such as substances or foreign gases. Young Betas in more traditional families are often told to stop scrunching their nose as it’s considered undignified.

Due to their sensitivity to smell some Betas are prescribed pills that help suppress this sense though this is considered a highly addictive substance and is commonly abused. In dire circumstances abuse of this substance can lead to a Beta losing their sense of smell.

Betas can do something called Scent Shifting where they mimic someone else’s scent. Laws regarding this vary from place to place but overall most say to only use it when strictly necessary. Though many politicians will use to gain political favor and many students will use it to get out of gym class.

Instincts/Common Habits:

Betas will often steal their packmate’s trinkets and when they want someone to join their pack they’ll start stealing their trinkets. It’s often seen as a sign of love similar to an Omega stealing clothing and blankets for their nests.

Instead of nesting Betas will build little nooks in high spaces (Betas love heights). Loft beds are the most common place for nooks but they are really put anywhere high. Unlike nests disassembling nooks are very common especially because many Betas will make their nooks on counter tops or in vents. Nooks are usually filled with blankets, pillows, trinkets, and if a Beta’s stressed they’ll start stashing food and water in them.

Pack betas are often the ones to settle arguments being seen as generally more logical. This also leads to most lawyers being Betas. Many Betas are also used to having their feelings ignored because of this and will many bottle up their emotions and pretend to be okay.

Betas love cuddling, this leads to them being very comforting during an Omega’s heat.

Clothing:

Beta clothing focuses on cover the nose and neck. They wear a lot of turtle necks, hoods, and masks. It’s often harder to find Beta oriented clothing compared to other dynamics and more expensive.

Betas love physical touch more than other dynamics and their clothing reflects that. They rarely wear sleeves and more stubborn Betas will get into arguments about wearing warmer clothes during the winter. Jackets made for Betas have very loose fitting sleeves to allow for more movement.

History:

During history Betas were often ignored due to not having a heat or rut. They wore clothes that lacked color and were generally told to keep quiet and partial. While being a step above Omega’s when came to political power they were seen as much less valuable than an Alpha.

In a kings court most servants were Betas and Omegas who were considered too old to find a mate. While there were some Beta kings they weren’t very vocal about their dynamic. Betas from families of high status were often given the jobs of executioners and spies.

Betas were more likely to be drafted as they were less likely to have children though it wasn’t by much and Alphas were more likely to enlist.

While collars have been used throughout history by a multitude of cultures. In Ancient Rome Betas were forced to wear them so they couldn’t hide their dynamic using Scent Shifting. This practice is seen in many parts of history but most notably in Rome.

I actually love that you mentioned that abandoning a pack member is looked down upon.

Are there like degrees to it? Like is abandoning an alpha wolf as bad as a gamma one? Or is like abandoning an omega like the worst thing a pack could do?

Each one has a different layer to it.

Omegas: they are so vulnerable without a pack that abandoning them is one of the most horrifying thing a pack of werewolf could do. It is almost taboo. If another pack found out about it, they would shun that pack, maybe rip it apart.

Deltas: can survive a bit alone and are resilient, but since their instincts are so strongly connected to the care of a pack, being packless makes them incredibly disoriented. Their instincts go crazy, to the point where they neglect themselves so much they will slowly waste away.

Gammas: Gammas are the type of werewolf that can survive the most alone, but even then it's a miserable existence. Because they have no pack ground that is a safe place to let go of their constant hypervigilance, they end up overwhelmed, exhausted and incredibly skittish. (Gamma MC has a very hard time feeling safe again)

Betas: it is very cruel to abandon Betas, because it means they are unwanted, and this is the worst heartbreak a Beta could experience. In fact, Betas die very quickly if left by a pack, because their strong sensitivity and emotional attunement to the pack gets severed and betrayed too deeply for them to survive in most cases.

Alpha: stray alphas are very rare, but very heartbreaking. If an Alpha itself is abandoned, it means they are rejected completely by the pack. And that makes Alphas go crazy. The lack of other werewolves drives Alphas insane. Stray Alphas are often hyperaggressive, and so lonely it hurts.

Beta vs scent

I don't really like the headcanon that betas have zero scent. Having no scent at all isn't really possible, from what I understand. It would also cause other issues in the long hall. Like if a beta goes missing and they need a dog to sniff them out. If they are literally odorless, even the dog couldn't find them.

I think it would be better if their scent was weaker to everyone else but other betas. It also goes along with the headcanon that betas have a strong sense of smell. To others, they are scentless, or they'd have to get really close to scent them. But to other betas they can pick each others scent easily.

I also think that if they had a alpha or omega mate when they scent their beta to them the scent fades. It does, to an extent, but only to the point where only betas can really catch it.

I think this would also go well with the betas being hunters headcanons. Sending out members with stronger odors would get found easily.

The "Nom" action — A/B/O

When someone (Alpha/Omega/Beta) feels safe/feels a lot of affection for someone, while they're in a more instictually driven state, they may 'Nom'. This is where they gently nip/bite and hold the 'grip' to show their affection.

Betas:

Betas rarely go into a more instictually driven state, due to how they are, so they're more prone to the 'nom' instict

A Beta will 'nom' the wrist of whoever they feel comfortable with

This is due to the fact their Wrist-glands are very important and serve a more dominant function in them, compared to AO's

The longer the Beta holds the wrist, the more affection they have towards the person/the more comfortable they feel

Omegas:

Omegas 'nom' either in heat or during moments of pure relaxation

To 'nom' an Omega will first go to the person and see if they get affection

Then, they'll prepare to 'nom' by wrapping the target in an affectionate hold

Then, they grab the person's arm and 'nom' the forearm as a way to play

The more time the Omega takes to prepare their 'nom-attack' the more affection they feel/the more comfortable they are with the person

Alphas:

Alphas 'nom' during when they're deep in their instincts

First, the Alpha will paw at the person; pawing at the arm or shoulder they will attack

Then they'll lean in and gently 'nom' around the bicep or the shoulder

If an Alpha closes their eyes, that means they feel safe with the person — the longer their eyes stay shut, the more affection/trust they have

Oh great I made myself obsessed with my own characters I created, now I have to make content for them by myself

So I already talked about them in my previous post, but I’m gonna make this its own separate post

So omegaverse world where omegas are underestimated, and there’s a “black widow” omega (someone who’s repeatedly getting married just to murder their spouses)

And to everyone else, their spouses just keep dying because of accidents, except for this one detective, who is sure something is off, but right off the bat they have two roadblocks in their way: 1) no one would ever believe an omega of murdering their spouse, especially an alpha, and 2) their last case was a disaster, so everyone’s faith in them has dropped

And then depending on what the detective is, that can also affect their credibility, like let’s say that the detective can tell something is off because things don’t quite smell right, buuuuut they’re a beta, who’s going to listen to a beta on how things smell when the alphas didn’t say anything??

Or they can tell the omega isn’t acting how an omega would normally act because they’re an omega themself, but because the detective is an omega, people are brushing it off as “oh you can’t know for sure, you haven’t lost multiple spouses, everyone copes differently”

Eventually, the omega pretty much admits it straight to the detective’s face, but is also like “no one’s gonna believe you, all you have is scent, and scent can’t be documented” and so even despite admitting it to their face, the detective just can’t do anything, the omega gets away, and their reputation takes another hit

…But that’s not the last time they see the omega, maybe it’s just to gloat, or because they like having someone who knows the real them and not the façade they put up to make everyone think they’re so helpless and sweet, but the omega will not stop coming by their office to bother them 

(Also I’m partially picturing the omega as Debbie from the Addams Family Values)

My Omegaverse House Rules

warnings: talks of body autonomy and some societal traditionalism, some inaccurate descriptions on intersex anatomy

basically, these are my rules and guide for how Omega verse works, it will be the same for all my fanfics with Omega verse in them.

Anatomy

-male omegas and female alphas are born intersex so they are immediately recognized for their second sex and what it is. When male omegas hit puberty, they also start to develop breasts just as females since the biological function of breasts is to feed a baby

-for male omegas they have a small penis but no balls as well as a vagina behind it.

-as for female omegas they just have the vagina

-female alphas have a vagina but they have a penis that’s just below the other part

-male alphas only have the one set but they have certain special features with it, I’ll get more onto that in a bit

-betas both female and male have average anatomy

scents

-when a pup is born they have what is called a milky smell to them

-After ten to twelve months a pup develops a scent that while is still have a hint of milk to it won't give them a distinct scent yet will let others know what their secondary sex is

-for betas male and female they don’t have scents, heats, ruts, they are just the average joe, so in other words like a normal person

-like snowflakes no two scents are exactly alike, smell similar of course but never the same

-they also all have a nature smell to them like the plants or rain made into an interesting perfume

Heats

-three to four days before a heat starts the omega starts to ovulate

-for five to seven days straight every month omegas both male and female will go into heat

-During the time omegas get cramps that are similar to menstrual pain that can only be relieved through two methods, either medicine such as ibuprofen or through intercourse

-though the second option is more effective since the purpose of a heat is to conceive

-Taking any form of birth control during this time will not work, except maybe condoms

-during this time the omega must be kept inside as to not draw any unwanted attention

-after the heat has completed and if the omega has not conceived then they will receive a menstrual flow, and yes this happens for both male and female omegas, which will last for a week

Ruts

-For alphas ruts are a whole other thing to deal with

-ruts are not as long as a heat they only last three to four days every month

-However during this time the alpha becomes a primal beast obsessed with trying to claim anyone less powerful and submissive, for the most part that means an omega

-and afterwards once the rut is finished everything goes back to normal for them

-also just like to point out that female alphas do not get periods since they cannot get pregnant

Bond marks

-bond marking can happen in or outside of a heat

-If two people bond then they are bound together, it’s a little hard to explain but when two people mark each others neck only the other can help out with a heat/rut no one else can help

-it’s also permanent they cannot get divorced because of laws protecting this sort of thing

-However you can get it removed, like with getting a tattoo removed

-First you need to have surgery to close the bite mark, then for the next couple months the two former mates need to take medication so they can get rid of the need to biologically be with that person

Conception

-For female betas they can get pregnant the same rate as any other female human woman

-Female omegas even outside of a heat are incredibly fertile so if a a female omega wants to have non baby making sex with someone they’d need to pull all the stops and be extremely careful

-For male omegas they can only get pregnant during ovulation and their heat, however just one time without a condom or a busted one WILL result in a pregnancy

-and in case it wasn’t clear male omegas can only GET pregnant, they can’t get someone else pregnant they only have the carrier reproductive organs

-as stated before female alphas can only get someone else pregnant they don’t have a womb only sperm holders

Society

-In my omega verse universe, it's not going to be dystopian where in every single corner of the world an omega is an alpha's property, and they are only used as breeding cows.

-Because no offense to people who actually write that type of world dynamic it just gets kind of boring after reading the same type of Omega verse in each fanfic

-No what I had in mind was each part of the world how women are treated is the same as the way omegas and even at times female betas are treated in that region on Earth

-and since we're not (in all places in the United States at least) treated like cattle omegas and female betas aren't treated like that either.

Prejudice

-Prejudice however does still exist in this world, including homophobia, sexism, ETC.

-Now you're probably wondering how homophobia works in the universe huh? simple it would be like an omega x omega, or alpha x alpha, and beta male x beta male, beta female x beta female, basically if your partner can't get you pregnant, you're going to face prejudice as a couple.

-As stated, before sexism in my omega verse will be very similar to how sexism works in the real world, it ranges from inappropriate comments, and subtle gestures, to full-on monstrous acts.

-With female betas, it's not nearly as severe as it is towards all omegas, but they too get their shared end of sexism

-However, that doesn't mean that alphas and male betas don't have their own sexism as well, since people need to remember sexism does not just affect one side of the genders.

Work

- Specifically in the United States, they have a system like this, where an omega and alpha employee when they hit their rut/heat there is a substitute on standby to take their place for as long as the heat/rut is going to happen unless, of course, they are on suppressants which in some cases like say the army it is required to take that as well as be on birth control.

School

-From preschool to elementary school, faculty and staff only have the typical child-rearing problems to worry about.

-When the children start to enter puberty however precautions need to take place, during the time of a rut/heat the student is made to stay at home for the duration of their heat/rut during which a student aid will come by their house and drop off any assignments from their classes as to not fall behind.

-In a way it's kind of like when someone is sick, and before you ask yes while omegas/alphas are in a bit of a feral state they also have moments of calm where they can think properly and get some things done

-In college things are done a bit differently, for one thing all schoolwork is done on the computer and on a student portal.

-Omegas are made stay in sorority houses while Alphas stay in fraternity houses, the reason why is that it's too dangerous for omegas and alphas to stay in dorm rooms where they could unexpectedly hurt others or be hurt by them in their feral state

-It also helps, especially when you are an omega, when they sync up with their heat/rut and help each other out, not necessarily through sex, but through other means of comforting the other

-Female and male betas can also join fraternities/sororities but it is a process just like how sororities/fraternities are in our universe, however, it's not exactly the complete same since those houses were created for different purposes entirely.

Hi! Sorry if it was asked before, but could you please explain how werewolf hierarchy works? I think that I kind if understand that alphas are on the very top like chieftains of a tribe, what about the rest? Who is next? What is delta? Is omega the lowest ranking member? And what do packmates do according to their ranks? Especially deltas. Finally, ate there any other designation except for alpha, beta, delta and omega? And what do they represent?

Sorry for bombarding you with questions, I just got very curious about the werewolf lore, especially yours because each author writes werewolves differently.

Hello, dear anon! I loved receiving this many lore questions <3 let's start from the beginning

Your comparison to a tribe is completely on point because packs were born in ancient times as sort of tribes and they have kept some of the structures and rituals to this day. There isn't a proper hierarchy, though. Just, everyone has its place and specific role.

There is only a sort of line of command when hunts are concerned, with alphas at the top and omegas being the ones to either stay home or act more according to their instincts (usually, alphas don't order omegas around. They just allow them to do their thing and most importantly alphas protect the vulnerable members of their pack). So this means that there isn't a lower ranking member per se.

In the pack, there are in total five designations: alphas, betas, gammas, deltas, omegas. (There may be more werewolf designations, but I will explain them if they are relevant to the plot)

Alphas are the ones who ultimately make the decisions in the pack. Not because they are dominant, but because they are the first to put themselves in line to protect the pack, or to bear the blunt of any decision that might go badly. Alphas are built to be resistant and deadly. Also to feel incredibly protective and territorial of their pack.

Betas follow alphas in hunts, and generally they are built for teamwork - in contrast with other roles who work better alone. Betas are intelligent and sensitive to the mood of the pack, they are quick to react and follow directions. They, too are quite protective, but not as territorial as alphas.

Gammas are the ones who guard the territory. Or scout the land. They are incredibly silent, and the fastest type of were (if you don't count omegas when they are feral). They generally work well with betas, and are in tune with other werewolves, responding to directions as the others decide. They can, though, disobey and fight if they don't feel like their orders are fair.

Deltas are the hard working wolves of the pack. Physically built for resistance and stamina, they aren't fast or agile. Instead, deltas usually help gammas guard the pack territory and rarely leave it (Indigo and Raine, the two deltas, weren't with Bela at the djinn lair). They experience strong urges to provide for the pack, and to protect it (they can be even quite possessive of the pack).

Omegas are, at the same time, the strongest designation and the most vulnerable. Strong because they are built to kill anyone that might threaten the pups/injured pack members - including strong supernaturals or even other werewolves. Vulnerable because omegas have a docile nature and can be exploited by supernaturals who are aware of this. Omegas are rarely aggressive, but they can go feral if their pack is gravely threatened.

In a way, omegas are kept in high regard by the pack. They are looked after and respected (in good packs) for their role.

But also they are prosperous in their personal lives too, being hard workers and deligent, Betas bring to themselves and their packs a lot of prosperity. Also represents amab Betas. ✦ Mint: Symbolizes Equality. Betas are known for being the most neutral dynamics (now whether this is true or not, or if it's a detrimental view or not is up for debate). What IS true is that Betas are the symbol of true gender equality. Whereas Omegas and Alphas are often pitted as being opposites and having power imbalances, Betas remain fair and true amongst themselves. And really shouldn't we all want the same? Also represents afab Betas. ✦ White: Symbolizes Pride. Pride in being a Beta is perhaps the most powerful of prides, because often they're overlooked or looked down upon and forgotten. But withour Betas we would not have the Omegaverse community we have today. ✦ Yellow: Symbolizes Sedulousness. Betas are by far the most hard-working and diligent dynamics when we talk about the years of A/B/O worldbuilding. But this is also true in real life. Most Betas I know are strong, obistinated, inovative and ambitious people. ✦ Gold: Symbolizes Community. Much like in the Miscecanis flag and the Alpha flag. Community is also a core principle for a Beta. Community is what makes the world go round. A lone wolf rarely goes far on its own. The gold represents the value a Beta has and also attributes to their pack. ✦ Purple: Symbolizes Unity. Unity as a community, as a dynamics and as a miscecanis community. ✦ Square: Symbolizes Strenght. Betas are historically the backbone, the pillars of society. Directly and indirectly. The Square is a strong, stable shape that symbolizes the base of the pack and of the rest of society as a whole. ✦ Three smaller stars + One large Star: Symbolizes The Dynamics. The four smaller ones symbolize Alphas, Omegas and other Dynamics as well as Dynamifluid people; And the largest star, meaning the most numerous (historically speaking when we talk about Omegaverse worldbuilding) is the Beta star.
