Her approach has him immediately bow, incline his head. There has never been a part of Harwin Strong that has shown disrespect towards the royal family. "Good afternoon, Your Grace." He cannot remember a time that she has approached him at all. He might be a part of the city watch, the heir to Harrenhal, the son of the current Hand of the King, but none of that makes him worthy of the attention of any of the royal family - the latter most of all, considering his father took the position of her own. "Is there something I can assist you with?"

Dragonstone
Visenya
After two years and her mothers three failed attempts to get her to abandoned her engagement with Aemond to marry, the now newlywed,Cregan, she was at Dragonstone. Where she was greeted by a new baby brother, Aegon, or Aegon the younger as many referred to him. It was strange, the babe was the exact image of her, had her face, her smile, her eyes, but they were also the eyes and the smile of Daemon, and the face of Rhaenyra. And yet unlike her, this babe was loved, adored even. And she was becomeing more and more of an outsider to her own family. And the babe in her mothers belly would only push her further away.
"Visenya?" she heard Daemon call, despite the hesitancy, the pair had become somewhat close. Daemon having taken up time to train her with a sword, aswell has teach her all that he knew, an activity that had previously been reserved solely to Baela, a fact the girl had ahted so much that she had left to Driftmark.
"Daemon" she replied, looking up from her book, " what is it?"
He laughed, "māzigon sir tala, kostagon iā kepa daor māzigon visit zȳhon tala va zirȳla Brōzio Tubis" he moved forward to pat her head.
come now daughter, can a father not come visit his daughter on her name day
High valyrian, the only lounge her 'father' would speak to her in, "sȳrī seeing hae iksā se mērī mēre qilōni ēza jeldan nyke iā biare Brōzio Tubis ēdan thought tolvys would sagon skipping ziry bisa jēdarī"
sȳrī seeing hae iksā se mērī mēre qilōni ēza jeldan nyke iā biare Brōzio Tubis ēdan thought tolvys would sagon skipping ziry bisa jēdarī
"daorys ēza forgotten, Se ao gīmigon bona, dōna riña" he sighed, "tala, nyke gīmigon skoros bisa Brōzio Tubis means, īlon mirre gaomagon, se aōha muña iksis paktot zirȳla self lēda worry. issa worried syt ao, dōna riña" she scoffed, "nyke gīmigon ziry gaomas daor urnēptre ziry se ēza va moriot issare distant...yn"
no one she has forgotten, and you know that, sweet a girl daughter, I know what this name day means, we all do, and your mother is beside her self full worry. he is worried for you, sweet a girl I know he does cannot show he and she has always been distant...but
"Dont make excuses for her! Gods, my whole life i have been put an arms length away, shown no love by my own mother, all because i am your daughter, and you abandoned her. I should hate you both!" she sneered, before taking a deep breath, "ēza dōrī, daor istin, celebrated ñuha Brōzio Tubis. gaoman daor jiōragon presents, iā gifts, daorun hen zirȳla. Se ao would pendagon bona va ñuha mōrī Brōzio Tubis, se ñuha ēlī lēda zirȳla isse lanta bōsa jēdri nyke would. se yet gaoman daor" she was angry, he could tell that, everyon could. At breakfast her mother didnt even acknowledge her. And in only a few days she would got to kingslanding and marry Aemond. Aemond who as it seemed had also forgotten her.
she has never, not once, celebrated my name day. i do not get presents, or gifts, nothing from her. and you would think that on my last name day, and my first with her in two long years i would. and yet i do not.
"Senya, I am your father, and you are my daughter, your mothers daughter and her heir. She cares, even if she does not show it." he smiled, grabbing her hand "Now your brothers have a surprise for you" he stood up, dragging her with him.
She and her brothers had become closer the few moons she had been back, especially her and Jacaerys.
The gardens of dragonstone had been covered in decorations, balloons and a banner saying happy name day. It was a far cry from the usual balls and feasts, but the next few moons would be filled with that. She had wanted something small, to work as her nameday and going away celebration. All she wanted was two things, a civil day with her family, and cake.
A four tiered cake sat in the centre of the gardens, decorated in pink, white and gold with a single candle ontop.
A big smile graced her face at the sight, making her brothers, who stood to the side filled with excitement. Even baby Aegon had a big proud smile,as if the whole thing was his own idea. Her mother was there, with a small smile gracing her lips, at the sight of her daughter.
Her brothers were quick to tackle her into a hug.
"Happy name day Senya!" Joffrey practically screamed.
Jace watched on with a big smile, before moving to taunt a teary eyed luke. "We have a cake! Come see!" Joffrey spoke, dragging her down the steps and into the garden.
"Make a wish!" Joffrey whispered in her ear, before running off to stand with the other guests, or the lords and ladies that ran with her mother from the red keep to dragonstone.
She made a wish, a wish she would never admit too and a wish she hoped would one day be true.
"Daughter" she heard her mother speak, causing her to look up from the cake. "I wish to talk to you"
"Why?" she asked bewliderd, moving away from the cake to follow her mother. Servants were already moving towards the cake to cut it up and serve, she hoped some would be saved for her, but the eyes of both Luke and Joffrey were staring at the cake with which she highly doubted it.
"Beacuse i am your mother and i...care for you" she replied, her eyes looking down in shame as she struggle to utter the last part, causing Visenya to scoff.
"Of course." she rolled her eyes.
They moved away to talk in an alcove away from the celebration, away from prying eyes.
"Are you sure-"
"Yes!" she innturrupted, "for the last time mother, Aemond and i have been friends our whole lives, and though we have become distant in the past years is does not mean that this wedding is something i no longer want, and the realm will be better for it. It will ease tensions between the branches of our family and hopefully unit them."
Her mother nodded her head. " i know that, but- "
"No, mother, dont try. Am I still your heir?" she asks, causing her mothers eyes to snap to hers.
"Yes, I promised you it...I will not take it back, just like my father didn't remove me as heir once Aegon was born."
She sighed, "Then, me marrying Aemond will hopefully appease the greens, their blood will still sit on the throne"
Her mother moved closer, and took her hands in hers, "you are my daughter, it is my job to worry, dōna riña." Visneya flinched at the words.
"And yet you have never seemed to care before" she moved back, her mother eys filling with pain.
She took a deep breath " you are right, i have..i have not always been...there for you- but i want to be now"
"Now?" she asked bewildered " now? Now that I am leaving in a few days, now that I am about to be married?now?" she asked, her voice breaking. "Why do you care now?"
Her mother looked down, tears in her eyes "because Daemon-"
"Oh Daemon! of course! Of course he is why you care. He was the reason you hated me to begin with, and now! Gods, it's so- i" it was ridiculous that's what and she hated it, and yet she could'nt bring herself to hate her mother.
She took a deep breath, and moved towards her mother, "i leave in less than a week, we should not argue, we- no you should be ofr once in my life civil with me, show me an ounce of the love you showed my brothers, and be my mother." she stepped back, looking over to the party, jace was looking over, his face filled with concern.
"Tala,-" her mother began, "Avy jorrāelan, gaoman. nyke vaoreznuni bona gaoman daor urnēptre ziry yn - istia shifang skorkydoso qopsa īles naejot jurnegon rȳ aōha laehurlion tolī daemon geptot nyke, se ōdres hen ziry haunted nyke rȳ ao se nyke dōrī teptan se bonf iā muña should emagon lēda zirȳla tala iā chance, se iksan vaoreznuni"
Daughter....i love you, i do... im sorry that i do not show it but - you must understand how hard it was to look at your face after Daemon left me, the pain of it haunted me through you and i never gave the bonf a mother should have with her daughter a chance, and i am sorry.
Visneya simply nodded her head and moved forward, she had heard nothing new today, it was the same old argument she seemed to hve with her mother everyother day.
"Senya!" she heard Jace call as she walked down the halls, she wouldnmt stop, she couldn't. She just wanted to get away. "Visenya!" he called again, finally catching up. He placed his hand on his shoulder stopping her. "What happened?" he asked.
"Nothing, it was the same as usual, that's' all" he nodded his head, seeing hse didnt want to talk.
"Here I stole some of the cake from the party-your party" he pulled out two slices of cake wrapped in napkins from his pockets, "we can go to your chambers and eat them if you want" his eyes had a longing in them, hope.
She nodded her head, walking towards her chamber door. They ate in silence, relaxing in each other's company.
"I'll miss you" he spoke suddenly, his voicebraking.
"And i'll miss you" she replied, taking his hand "ill miss you all" she said, turning to face him, hand in hers. "I'll miss everyone," she smiled.
"No '' Jace shook his head, "i'll miss you" his eyes had such a sotrng loinging in them, a longing she now finally realsied was for her? He leant forward, leaning in to kiss her.
"What are you doing?" she asked, jerking back.
Jace grew flustered, a blush coming to his face, "i-im sorry, i-i thought that!-"
"You thought wrong! Gods jace....i" she sighed, he was hurt, "i am to be wed, and mother is planning an bethrotahl between you a Baela, i- we can not and i do- i don't look at you that way"
Her heart broke at the look on his face, "perhaps it's best if you leave"
He nodded his head and left.
She was confused, Jace had never been like this with her, at least she didnt think so. Their mother had never hinted or asked for them to consider the chance of marrying eachother. In fact she seemed quite opposed to the idea. Perhaps Daemon had mentioned something, he had taken Jace to a tour of brothels for his last nameday. She had heard that he had only picked one to bed, a woman with silver hair and violet eyes, one that looked very similar to her. Even made replicas of her clothing and responded to her name. Creepy. She had known of childhood crushes on her, Aegon had been obsessed with ehr as a child, and prepas now, if his letters were any inclination. But Jace? It was just straight up confsuing.
"syt qogralbar sake, qubāje Brōzio Tubis mirre!" she mumbled falling back onto her bed.
for fuck sake, worst birthday ever!
The next few days were spent relatively alone. Her youngst brothers her only company. Before she knew it it was the day they were leaving. Her room was fully packed, only the base furniture remained. It was funny she hadn't even lived her a year and there would be no trace of her ever being her. She had no fond memories of this place. She doubted she would miss it.
Now winterfell she did miss. She missed Creagn. He had become her closest friend and confidont. But he was a thousand leagues away, it took an age to receive and send letters. She hoped one day she could visit, meet the child in his wifes belly and see him as lord of winterfell. If his uncle ever stopped being power hungry and actually gave his nephew his birthright.
"Tala" she heard her mother call out, " we are about to leave".
she should be exicted, years and longing to be with Aemond and yet suddently years of fustration filled her, yeards of letters sent and no reply.
she was to be his wife in a moons time, a moon of celebrations, fo tourneys and feasts.
but she didnt know him, not anymore, the last she had seen him, and spoke to him was that fatefull night at winterfell.
for all she knew he had become like Aegon, or he had stayed exaclty the same. or worse she had become something, somone she knew nothing about.
she knew there would be changes, with Aegon and Heleana married with children. she feared going back, and yet she knew it was her home. A home she never wanted to leave, but she feared she wouuld retun and feel even more alone than she did here.

I’ve said the same thing before. Rhaenyra didn’t even want children. Right before her betrothal to Laenor because of the brothel, she was telling Alicent that she didn’t want to be cooped up in the castle forced to pump out heirs. So what changed in the next half year? (Because Jace is 10 he had to have been conceived shortly after the wedding) She couldn’t conceive with Laenor, but having obvious bastards wasn’t the only option. She could’ve chosen one of Laenor’s relatives BUT another option is she could’ve named Aegon her heir and lived life as she wanted in that aspect. Aegon is a Targaryen, he’s her blood brother, he’s legitimate. At the time he was and innocent toddler, not involved in anything. He wasn’t a drunk or a rapist, he wasn’t her antagonist.
She just didn’t want Alicent’s son to inherit anything even if it meant he would inherit from her, after her. She didn’t consider him a brother, her father’s son or a real Targaryen.
This has been bothering me for a long time now. When I started watching the show I knew nothing about the actual Dance and haven’t read Fire&Blood. And when I first saw Rhaenyra I was like “yo, she doesn’t want kids, she would much rather be a warrior fighting on the battlefield than being forced to get married and have children” and I was so invested in her as a character because she also had that mindset for her entire life up until the biggest timeskip. And then we suddenly see her giving birth to her third (!) child. I was so confused.
Why was she having all these bastard children so soon? What about all that “fighting on the battlefield”?? Now I know that it was just a stupid addition by the creators that was later on forgotten about.
And also, you’re so right about her naming Aegon heir. Like, literally. Imo it was the best solution. Marry whoever you want, have children if you want, and if you don’t want to, just don’t have any. Just name Aegon your heir. She would literally solve sooo many problems.
a) No need to have children to secure your position + no need to put your obviously bastard children at risk
b) Aegon is still your blood, your half-brother, and a prince with a legitimate claim. Not some random guy out of nowhere.
c) The Targaryens still get to keep their last name even after you
d) Everyone is happy (except Daemon probably but who cares, fuck that guy Corlys but he can go fuck himself OR if he really wanted, he could’ve arranged the marriage of Baela/Rhaena to Aegon)
And if that wasn’t the option, the only explanation is she just hated Alicent and that is, well, on her honesty.

The last couple of days, I have been rewatching House of the Dragon Season 1 in preparation for Season 2 which begins next month. There have been small details I have begun to notice this time round watching. So I just wanted to share some.
In this post, I would like to mention a few details regarding the bond between Aemond and Vhagar.
——————————
Some people view this bond as a weak one. They use evidence from episode 10 where Aemond “loses control” over Vhagar and she kills Lucerys. Claiming that Aemond does not have a clear strong bond with his dragon in comparison to Daemon and Caraxes, or Rhaenyra and Syrax.
I disagree
To explain what I mean, I need to give some context regarding the shows timelines (please disregard the books timelines which are different to the ones of the show)
In episode 2, 12 year old Laena Velaryon and Viserys are walking through the gardens as Laena has been offered up as Viserys potential bride by her parents. To make conversation, she asks Viserys about Vhagar and where she is - Viserys mentions that no one had seen Vhagar and the dragon keepers believe she rests somewhere far away.
Vhagars rider before this was Baelon and it is assumed that she left after his death and has not been seen since.
Episode 3 starts with Aegons second name day celebration. This implies it’s been atleast 3 and a bit years since episode 2. We can assume the royal wedding happened very quickly and Alicent got pregnant shortly after with Aegon. Once born, Alicent would’ve gotten pregnant with Helaena as she is heavily pregnant during this episode.
Laena would now be around 15 years old based on this timeline.
In episode 4, only 2-3 months have passed as Alicent has now given birth, and Rhaenyra is returning from her tour. This episode ends with Otto being fired.
Episode 5 picks up right after as we see Alicent in the same outfit as the end of episode 4, and Otto readying his horse to leave. Rhaenyra and Viserys have sailed to Driftmark, and return shortly after with the Velaryons for the royal wedding.
When arriving, Rhaenys and Laenor fly their dragons Meleys and Seasmoke, together towards the red keep. This implies that Laena (15) has yet to claim a dragon - as we know she claims Vhagar and we would have very obviously seen her if she were there.
I believe that at the wedding, Alicent is already pregnant with Aemond, conceived during that awkward and gross sex scene in episode 4. We know that Helaena and Aemonds age difference is about a year or two, so this would line up.
In episode 6, Laena is speaking with her daughter about how she did not have a dragon even when she was 15, but then claimed Vhagar. By my timeline, Laena would’ve claimed Vhagar, who had suddenly come back after years, in the same year as the wedding of Rhaenyra and Laenor. Aemond would’ve also been born in the same year.
——
Here’s my theory:
Vhagar only returned when Aemond was born because she knew that he would be her last true rider.
We can assume that Vhagar had her strongest bond with her first rider Visenya - a bold warrior and a brave fighter. Aemond, Vhagars last rider, grows to become a brave and bold warrior too, appealing to Vhagar as he was bold enough to claim her, one of the largest dragons left, in the middle of the night, alone as a young boy.
So what if Vhagar only returned to Westeros from wherever she was hiding all those years, specifically for Aemond? Symbolic of the dragon egg in the cradle, Vhagar was bound to become Aemonds dragon from his birth.
We know Aemond felt very embarrassed about the fact he was the only one who hadn’t claimed nor hatched a dragon, which only encouraged him to continuously attempt to claim one over and over again. But wouldn’t it be a twist if he did in fact have a dragon all along but never knew it? It was more of a spiritual bond before it was a physical one?
——
Laena and Vhagars bond was never demonstrated in the show. It was portrayed subtly as weak in comparison to Rhaenyra’s and Syrax’s bond or Daemon and Caraxes’ bond.
When Daemon gets shot with an arrow in the step stones, we can hear Caraxes let out a roar in pain. When Rhaenyra is having a miscarriage and attempting to give birth, we see Syrax roaring in pain reflecting Rhaenyra’s.
When Laena is trying to give birth, and clearly in pain, struggling to walk, we see Vhagar… having a nap. She only wakes up when Laena is standing right in front of her. Vhagar did not sense Laena’s pain or distress like other dragons have sensed their riders.
It reminds me of Jon and Rhaegal in Game of Thrones - Jon may have ridden him, but he did not bond with him like Danaerys bonded with Drogon.
In this post thus far, I have not mentioned or referenced any differing events and timelines from the books as I have only used examples from the show, but in the books, it is written that when Aemond loses his eye, Vhagar roars in pain - thus demonstrating their strong physical bond.
You can choose to discard that if you want, but it is a little crumb of context taken from the book as in the show, it is not shown when we cut straight to everyone gathered in the Driftmark hall.
In episode 10, when Aemond is chasing Lucerys through the skies above Storms end, I believe Vhagar could sense Aemonds anger towards Lucerys, and acted upon it as an instinct of revenge. She understands Aemonds pain and suffering at the hands of Lucerys, and in return kills him.
People look at this as being disobedience and a weak bond, I see it as such a strong bond that Vhagar didn’t even need to be told by her rider, because she could sense it. Just like Arrax, sensing Lucerys’ fear, defended him by blowing fire at Vhagar without being told. This also would’ve been an act that would’ve triggered Vhagar to attack - wanting to defend her rider from a dragon and boy who wished to harm him.
——
I believe there is reason to believe that Vhagar only returned to Westeros for Aemond. It would be the biggest coincidence that just before the dance, after so many years, Vhagar returns for no reason around the same time that Aemond, her soon to be rider, is born.
Vhagar could’ve left again after Laena died, but she didn’t. She flew to Driftmark where Aemond was, and waited. Roaring out to him when she landed.
Helaena foreshadowing Aemonds claim by saying he would have to close an eye, means that this was something already destined to happen. This wasn’t a random event.
I don’t believe the writers would add something in about Vhagar not being spotted for YEARS, if it were not important to the plot in some way.
——————
This take is certainly an interesting one, and is one to think about. The timeline matches, the foreshadowing matches, there are small hints that match, there is evidence to similar cases already in the show that imply this.
I think Vhagar knew that Aemond would be her last true rider, and that she would die with him as well. She is a war dragon, she would die a war dragon.

Terrible Fic Idea #53: House of the Dragon, but make it Quasi-Salic
Everything about the Great Council of 101 AC sets Westeros up for a future Dance of Dragons - and always would have, regardless of the outcome. There's no way around that. Rhaenys was the only child of Jaehaerys I's oldest son, Aemon. Viserys I was the oldest son of the king's second son, Baelon. The choice of Viserys I as king goes against every tradition of the Seven Kingdoms save chauvinism - and sets the stage for a thousand future wars of succession.
But the other frontrunner in the Council was not Rhaenys: it was her son, Laenor. Had the Council chosen him, it would have set a precedent among the Targaryens for Quasi-Salic inheritance - and, likely enough, lead to the exact same situation we find ourselves in in HotD.
Or: What if Laenor Velaryon had acceded to the Iron Throne after the death of Jaehaerys I?
Bear with me:
Quasi-Salic inheritance excludes females from the line of inheritance, but allows their male children to inherit their claim.
In HotD, this would mean that inheritance would pass through all of Prince Aemon's male descendants before Prince Baelon's claim could be considered. Princess Rhaenys would still be excluded, but her son Laenor would inherit her claim.
Until Laenor had a male heir, next in line of succession would be Viserys I, his male heirs, Prince Daemon, his male heirs, &c.
Under this law, none of Laenor, Viserys I, or Daemon's daughters could hold the throne in their own right, which seems in accordance with Andal thinking.
Just imagine it:
Laenor becomes king following Jaehaerys I's death in 103. He is nine years old. His mother, Princess Rhaenys, is regent - but Otto Hightower remains Hand of the King, in part to retain a sense of continuity in the realm, in part because he's actually good at his job.
Meanwhile, Prince Viserys is either given the lands along the Blackwater Rush (that would, in a different future, be given to Daemon I Blackfyre) or a minor role at court. His need for male heirs is not as pressing as in canon, but still kills his wife and leaves him only with a single living child, his daughter Rhaenyra.
Once her son is old enough, Princess Rhaenys needs to find Laenor a Valyrian bride so that he can produce heirs as soon as possible. While pairing him with his sister Laena is attractive, that does nothing to mend the fences broken by the Great Council. And so Laenor and Rhaenyra wed for much the same reasons they do in canon - albeit at few years earlier.
Until they produce a son, Viserys is still next in line to the throne and without any male heirs of his own. This changes after he marries Alicent Hightower - again, for much the same reasons in canon (because Otto may be good at his job, but he's also in it for himself, as are most people who rise to become Hand; Viserys is still the best groom he can get for his daughter by medieval standards) - who births three sons and a daughter in short order.
Problems start when Rhaenyra gives birth to a son - Jace, who looks nothing like his father - and continues with the births of Luke and Joffery. Bastards, everyone whispers.
Things get worse with the birth of her younger children - Aegon, Viserys, and Visenya - for while they look the image of Valyrian royalty, many assume they're actually the children of her uncle and goodbrother, Prince Daemon, who is seen more often in Rhaenyra's company than her husband.
Though Laenor maintains Rhaenyra's children are his, there are many who begin looking towards Viserys to succeed him.
Then in 129 AC, two things happen: Laenor Valeryon and Viserys Targaryen both die - perhaps in the same hunting mishap, perhaps from an illness that sweeps through the Crownlands.
Jacaerys is crowned king...
...and the people rebel.
There are a variety of reasons why people would not be happy with the king's legally recognized heir succeeding him, ranging from 1) not wanting a bastard on the throne to 2) not wanting someone partial to Daemon - and inclined to take his advice - on the throne to 3) genuinely disliking the policies implemented during Laenor's reign and hoping for a return to the good times under a Targaryen king to 4) wanting to use the chaos as a ladder for their own advancement. Like the canon Dance of Dragons, it's a complicated intersection of social, political, religious, and economic issues at play.
And that's really all I have - the same players, the same game, just a slightly different board. The actual outcome of this Dance and how it comes about is entirely dealer's choice, but the takeaway should be that these characters were always doomed by their circumstances to a war they could possibly stop if they tried - only to see it play out in the next generation or the next, until war has wiped out all alternative contenders.
Bonuses include: 1) Laenor being a doting father and a sweetheart of a human being, but a disappointment as a king. He is indecisive, generous, friendly, easily swayed by his friends, and - ultimately - not strong enough to stand on his own in the cutthroat world of Westerosi politics; 2) Less concentration being given to the people in power than the children who will succeed them: Jace, Aegon II, and their respective siblings. The focus should be their bright childhoods and friendships being destroyed by the realities of their positions, which are entirely out of their control; and 3) In keeping with previous, a childlike wonder at Westeros and the glittering court at the Red Keep that slowly turns dark and heavy with the burden of adult expectations and inherited sins placed on young shoulders. The fracturing of a storybook, safe world into the nightmare that Westerosi politics actually is. Or: coming of age in the Seven Kingdoms.
As I said, that's all I really have. As always, feel free to adopt this bun, just link back if you do anything with it.

GoT or HotD? Any particular reasons why?
Depends on which half of GOT we're talking about here.
Game Of Thrones seasons 1-4 VS House Of The Dragon season 1
GOT's first four seasons had it's problems, a few show original plots that were just dumb (see Dany losing her dragons in season 2), and the closer it got the point where D&D were going to be without new books to adapt AND ignore the stuff they set up in previous seasons, the worse the writting got, but overall, it was still a pretty awesome show, with a few episodes that were masterpieces even in season one.
House Of The Dragon however is a show that ranges from decent to good, with a few scenes that are absolutely great, but no masterpieces yet. In my opinion, the show was being held back by it's one HUGE flaw: the pacing.
The war between the blacks and the greens is a long conflict that just DEMANDS some time skips, because the show can't afford to make 20 damn seasons to FINALLY get to the point of Rhaenyra and Aegon, both now adults, to be at each other's throats.
HOWEVER the first season had too many time skips. It was sort of okay in first half of the season the since the most time that ever passed between episodes was 2 years, but still, a time skip every other episode could get a little jarraging. Then suddenly, in between episodes 5 and 6 we jumped A WHOLE DECADE ahead in the timeline. And then in episode 8 we jump a few years ahead yet again.
I legit am wondering if the writers/showrunners were scared that the show would not have enough time to develop a fanbase and get canceled after season due to how bad GOT's ending was (hell, a different spin-off was canceled BEFORE airing) and thus decided to rush the plot as much as possible to get to the "good stuff" right away in the hopes that it would get enough people watching for the show to be given a fair chance.
Sure, this means season two will be the official start of The Dance Of The Dragons, but it still means we didn't see lots of stuff that could have been pretty interesting.
The deleted scenes of Daemon's "heir for a day" speech and Viserys asking him the same questions he asked Rhaenyra before making her heir, and realizing Daemon could NEVER be a good king. Alicent and Viserys' wedding. The reactions of the main characters to Alicent's first pregnancy, and then later on the birth of her first baby boy, aka a threat to Rhaenyra and Daemon AND a major win for Otto.
Daemon and Corly's fighting a whole ass war against the crab-feeder. More of Alicent's attempts of patching things up with Rhaenyra. Criston Cole and Alicent bonding. Daemon's marriage to Laena and his relationship with his daughters. Rhaenyra's marriage to Laenor and her affair with Harwin. Alicent first realizing Rhaenyra's child cannot possibly be her husband's.
More scenes Rhaenyra and Daemon processing the death of their lover/spouse (and the deleted scene of Daemon comforting his daughters) and then rekindling their affair. More scenes of Laenor struggling to fit into that whole political plot and wishing he could just start a new life somewhere. More of Rhaenys and Corly's dealing with the "death" of their son. Helaena on her own AND her marriage to Aegon.
Seriously, imagine that in the first season of GOT, Ned was executed in episode 5 and the Red Wedding happened in episode 10. Sure, you showed audiences "the good stuff" faster - but you showed it WAY TOO FUCKING FAST!
I genuinely do think the content we got in this first season of HotD would have been much better if it had gotten around 24 episodes instead of 10, or was split in three seasons of at least 10-13 episodes ("Season One" being the years between episodes 1-5, "Season Two" being the longest season and the years between episodes 5-7, and "Season Three" episodes 8-10) because as it stands it feels like a part of the story is straight up missing.
I will say that, thanks to budget, a lot of it LOOKS better than the first seasons of GOT, and it really shows that it was the Targaryens at their most powerful. The Iron Throne is MUCH better, and not only can I actually tell the dragons apart, but now everytime I see Dany flying without that special dragon saddle and just holding onto Drogon for dear life, it looks REALLY silly. Seriously, her brother taught her to speak High Valirian and commands in said language to make the dragons obey, what dragons eat, and a fuckton of things about Westeros but he NEVER mentioned "And they used a saddle so they wouldn't fall mid flight"?????
(They also did a better job at showing how dragons do whatever the fuck they want, rider be damned)
Got seasons 5-8 VS HotD season 1
Easy choice. House Of The Dragon wins. Is there even the need for me to explain it? The lack of the line "You want the good girl, but you need the bad pussy" already justifies it. Plus, one episode aside, I can actually SEE the stuff that is going on, while GOT's second half looks like the budget for the dragons and ice zombies came at the expense of cutting all the money meant for lighting.
Also, while HotD is telling it's story too fast, it at least HAS a story to tell. The second half of GOT feels like filler that exists solely because HBO wanted to keep making money despite the fact that there were no more books to adapt AND that Dumb & Dumber were clearly incapable to come up with an original ending OR set up the ending Martin had already told them was his plan.
Bonus: House Of The Dragon VS Fire & Blood
While House Of The Dragon has it's flaws and I do worry about how they'll build up to the, frankly disappointing, canonical ending - or if they'll go nuts and do their own thing, and if said will be good - I still like it better than I liked literally any part of the book version of the story for one simple reason: the characters actually have some redeeming qualities, or are the very least charismatic assholes.
I could not fucking stand the book characters, and the constant "is this the actual truth or this unreliable narrator lying to me?" did not work as well as it did in the ASOIAF books because all of said unreliable narrators of Fire & Blood are completely removed from the actual events they're describing, so I found it hard to give a shit about any of the players in said events, since I had no way of knowing if any of them were as good/bad as they were being described or if it was all propaganda.

An Indecent Proposal-Chapter 17
A03,Prologue, Chapter 1,Chapter 2,Chapter 3, Chapter 4,Chapter 5,Chapter 6,Interlude,Chapter 7,Chapter 8,Chapter 9,Chapter 10,Chapter 11,Chapter 12, Chapter 13, Chapter 14, Chapter 15, Chapter 16
Daemon x Rhaenyra Multichapter AU:
Daemon leaves Rhaenyra at her wedding feast. Rhaenyra marries Laenor. After a year of trying to do their duty and produce an heir, Rhaenyra writes to Daemon.
She needs a true Targaryen heir.
It only needs to be an arrangement of business, she says. And it would result in Daemon’s child one day taking the Iron Throne.
Daemon accepts the proposal and returns to court.
Only, ventures like these are never simple. As much as they would wish to, Daemon and Rhaenyra cannot let go of the past, or the feelings they once had for each other.
123 AC
“Drink more wine, my love, it will help you sleep,” Alicent said.
Viserys obeyed. “You take good care of me, my dearest,” Viserys said, leaning to kiss her.
Alicent tried not to recoil. The benefit of Rhaenyra and Daemon being away at Dragonstone was that it had given Alicent ample time to bring her husband back under her thrall. But this also meant that she had to bed him every night and endure his attentions during the waking hours as well. Yet, she had still not managed to become pregnant again.
Viserys finished his wine and she kissed him again before returning to her own chambers. She idly wondered how many years this poison would take to work its magic. By now she understood more of her father’s intentions, but he had still failed to reveal all his plans to her. She simply knew she had to keep Viserys on her side.
There was a letter waiting for her when she arrived in her chambers.
Daughter,
You have been doing well to take advantage of our enemies being away from court. But you must continue to pray to be blessed with child again. Your rival has six children, whilst you only have four.
Aegon and Aemond have been gathering the allegiance of sellswords in the North and in the Vale. I continue to send them gold so they can properly arm those interested in supporting our cause. Tyland Lannister has been procuring pilfering the funds from the royal treasury.
I have received information from Dragonstone that the boy, named Aegon, is nearly identical to his elder brother. Once they return to court, you can use this to spread doubt. If we can get Viserys to realize that Rhaenyra has given birth to five bastard children, he will surely dismiss Daemon as his Hand and make our Aegon his rightful heir.
Start spreading your whispers now.
Your Lord Father
Alicent burned the letter and cursed Rhaenyra as she did. She would punish that impudent bitch for naming stealing her son’s name.
Criston Cole appeared some time later, eager to do her bidding. He always was, so long as she spread her legs for him. Keeping him on her side demanded certain sacrifices. After their encounters, however, she drank moon tea. She would not produce another bastard. Though it did occur to her that continuing to sleep with Criston while taking moon tea could jeopardize her chances to have another child by Viserys. So she sent Ser Criston to spread her message throughout the Seven Kingdoms and return at the end of the year.
He gladly went after a swift coupling. She sent for her moon tea and swallowed it down. With him gone, she would be free to focus all her efforts upon Viserys.
***
When Daemon and  Rhaenyra returned to King’s Landing, they received a grand welcoming feast. They presented Aegon the Younger to Viserys and the king declared him delightful.
The lords and ladies of Westeros congratulated them on their swift blessings. But they started whispering to one another when the proud parents turned their backs. Rumors about Rhaenyra’s children had started to circle again. And with Prince Aegon looking almost identical to his elder half-brother, well, suspicions were confirmed.
On their second night in King’s Landing, Jaela, their loyal and unofficial Mistress of Whisperers stole into the Red Keep and took the passage leading to Rhaenyra’s royal apartments.
The young woman was not so easily intimidated, but as she looked at the Princess and the Prince Consort, she felt certain she would be punished.
“Forgive me for disturbing you, Princess, My Prince. Only highly concerning rumors would compel me to do so.”
“Jaela, as always, we appreciate your service,” Rhaenyra said kindly. “Now please, say what you came to say.”
“Queen Alicent and her supporters are saying that Prince Daemon is the father of your children. She means to tell the king that they are bastards in hopes that he will confine you to Dragonstone and send Prince Daemon to the Wall.”
Daemon laughed and Jaela’s eyes widened.
“That will never work. That stupid bitch is growing desperate.”
“Prince Aegon the Younger does look exactly like Prince Jacaerys,” Jaela said. “That is compelling evidence to many in King’s Landing. The small folk, of course, care not, for the Queen does nothing to curry their favor. But the minor lords who are allied with House Hightower are a different story. And I have heard rumors that the Master of Coin himself believes the rumors.”
Daemon snorted. “I can deal with the Lannister cunt. He is bitter that Rhaenyra refused to betroth Jacaerys to his granddaughter.”
“Thank you for bringing these rumors to us, Jaela,” Rhaenyra said, crossing the room to a chest and removing several gold coins. She gave them to Jaela and sent her away.
She continued to pace, though, twisting the fabric of her skirt in her hands.
Daemon rose and put his hands on her shoulders. “Surely you don’t think your father will believe the rumors.”
“They are the truth,” Rhaenyra said.
“Yes, but when it comes to his family, my brother is blind.”
“His loyalty is divided. Do you know how often I’ve had to read about Alicent’s kindness in his recent letters. She has drawn him back to her side in our absence, pouring her honey in his ears.”
“By brother is a cunt struck old fool,” Daemon said.
“We have to circumvent this, Daemon. We should tell him the truth. He will legitimize them, and then it will not matter.”
“Do you think that wise?” Daemon asked. “We would lose the support of some of the Lords.”
“These Lords swore their fealty to me. If they break their vows when the time comes for me to take my throne, then I will simply burn them as traitors and offer their children an opportunity to bend the knee.”
Daemon kissed her, long and hard.
“What was that for?” Rhaenyra asked, a little breathless.
“I love it when you are ruthless.”
“You are a bad influence,” Rhaenyra said.
“Mmmmm, the worst,” Daemon agreed as he kissed her again, and they lost themselves in each other. After, though, Daemon said, “If you wish to tell Viserys the truth, I will not question your judgement.”
“All will be well, Daemon, and do not act as though you do not wish to publicly claim our children as your own.”
Daemon could not fault his wife for making such a claim. He was weary of his five eldest being addressed as Velaryons, no matter how much respect he had for Laenor.
***
“Lord Tyland Lannister is here to see you, Your Grace,” Ser Harrold said.
Viserys nodded and Ser Harrold opened the door. The Master of Coin entered the chamber and said, “Thank you for seeing me, Your Grace.”
“What is it, Lord Tyland?” Viserys said. His head was throbbing and his body was aching. His sleep continued to be plagued by discomfort.
“A most serious accusation has been heard from the mouths of many of your loyal lords and ladies. I am afraid in concerns Princess Rhaenyra and Prince Daemon.”
“Tell me,” Viserys said, tiredly.
“Many believe that Ser Laenor was never the father of any of Princess Rhaenyra’s children. Prince Jacaerys and Prince Aegon look like brothers, not half-brothers.”
“Tread carefully, Lord Tyland. You are verging on treason.”
“I beg your pardon, Your Grace. I am simply reporting what I have heard from many of your subjects.”
“Daemon and Laenor are both of Velaryon blood. As is Rhaenyra. It is not shocking that her children by Laenor would resemble her child by Daemon.”
“But Your Grace, the Prince came to court and suddenly the Princess was with child. ”
“A mere coincidence. The gods work in mysterious ways.
“The Prince treats them as his own children.”
“As he should. Prince Daemon is now a father of six. It is natural for him to dote upon his stepchildren, who are in truth, his great nieces and nephews.”
“But—"
Viserys cut him off. “I will not entertain notions such as these, Lord Tyland. Now leave me in peace.”
The man seemed to lose his courage. He bowed and departed.
“Aemon, some more wine, if you please.”
The silver haired boy rushed to do his bidding. Viserys drank deeply, enjoying the burning sensation of the wine and its strangely sweet aftertaste.
However, he was not meant to have an afternoon of peace, because not an hour later, Rhaenyra and Daemon unceremoniously entered his chambers. Their hair and clothing was slightly mussed and rumpled.
“I am tired,” Viserys said. “We can speak tomorrow.”
“Father, this is important,” Rhaenyra said, her voice steely. She had grown so much in the past few years, becoming more queenly and commanding with every passing moon.
“Very well,” Viserys said, taking a chair beside the fire and gesturing for his daughter and brother to join him. “What is it you need to tell me?”
Rhaenyra faltered for a moment. Viserys watched as Daemon took her hand. She seemed to draw strength from this simple act. “King’s Landing is filled with vicious gossip and rumors, but on occasion, the naysayers stumble upon the truth. Daemon and I have been lying to you, Father.”
“You have? About what?”
Rhaenyra looked to Daemon, who nodded. Rhaenyra took a deep breath and said, “Ser Laenor was incapable of fathering children. We tried for a year to do our duty, and when that failed, I begged Daemon to return to court. He is the father of all my children.”
Viserys gaped at them. Neither expression bore any hint of shame or regret.
“You cannot be serious. Ser Laenor claimed them as his children. They have his features.”
“They have Valyrian features,” Rhaenyra corrected. “That is why I asked Daemon to father my heirs. After Alyssa and Jacaerys were born though, we already loved each other too much to to be parted. Laenor knew the truth. He carried on his own affair with Ser Qarl Correy. Unfortunately that ended in tragedy.”
“This cannot be,” Viserys said.
“It is true, Brother,” Daemon said, speaking for the first time. “But that does not change the fact that they are true Targaryens. The line of succession goes through Rhaenyra. It does not matter who her husband was. They are legitimate.”
“The realm will not see it that way.”
“Fuck the realm. You are the king. Defend your daughter and her children. Our children.”
“By doing what, exactly?”
“Naturalize them. The king’s word is law. Allow your grandchildren to take the Targaryen name. It is their birthright.”
“Please, Father. I know this is difficult to hear, but my children are innocent in all of this. They do not deserve to be the subject of vicious speculation.”
Viserys groaned. He could not believe that his family had been deceiving him for all these years. But his beloved grandchildren were innocent, and for all their flaws, he loved Daemon and Rhaenyra. Alicent would be furious. She would claim that Rhaenyra deserved to be punished.
But the blood of the dragon ran thick. After all he had done to hurt his brother and daughter over the years, he could not deny them this request. And hiding from the rumors would only make the consequences more difficult and dangerous.
“Very well,” Viserys said. “I will naturalize them all. It is my fault that you wed Laenor to begin with. Had I known then what I know now, I would have blessed your union.”
“Thank you, Father,” Rhaenyra said, her eyes glistening with unshed tears.
Daemon thanked him as well, though Viserys could see the words pained him.
“I do not require thanks for doing what is right. The House of the Dragon must stand strong. Now please, leave me to rest. We will need all our strength to face court tomorrow.”
***
“Muña, why do you look so concerned?” Alyssa asked.
“Remember the serious discussion we had at Dragonstone?”
Alyssa did remember. “Yes. Why?”
“The King knows the truth.”
“But he is our grandsire,” Alyssa said. “Won’t he protect us.”
“Yes, my little dragon, he will,” Daemon said, joining his family in the courtyard. “But you will have to be fierce and strong today.” This, he said to all of his children.
“Like you and Muña?” Alyssa asked.
Daemon nodded and kissed his daughter’s brow. “Yes. You will have to be an example to your siblings.”
Alyssa nodded, and straightened her ebony and scarlet gown. Then she surveyed each of her siblings. After a moment she said, “We are ready, Kepus.”
They filed into the throne room, heads held high, save for baby Aegon, who was being held by his mother.
Alyssa took note of how the amassed crowd surveyed them with intense expressions. Alyssa mimicked her mother’s proud, undaunted expression and took Jace’s hand. As always, her brother was her strength.
Their grandsire, King Viserys, sat on the Iron Throne, with Blackfyre in hand. His Green Queen stood to one side at the foot of the steps, an ugly expression on her pretty face. Alyssa recalled her father’s name for the woman, though the word was not ladylike.
Viserys stood and called for silence.
“I, Viserys Targaryen, First of His Name, King of the Andals, and the Rhoynar, and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, and Protector of the Realm, welcome my grandchildren to the Red Keep.”
Alyssa raised her chin and caught her grandsire’s blazing eyes.
“Princess Alyssa Targaryen,” Viserys said. As she had been instructed, Alyssa approached the throne and knelt before the king.
“Prince Jacaerys Targaryen.” Jace followed suit.
“Prince Lucerys Targaryen.” Luke copied his brother, though appeared distinctly nervous.
“Princess Visenya Targaryen.” Visenya, bold and brash as her name sake, even at the young age of four, knelt before the king, her amethyst eyes blazing with pride.
“Prince Joffrey Targaryen.” Joffrey toddled up and joined his siblings.
“And finally, Prince Aegon Targaryen.”
Rhaenyra and Daemon joined the line of children.
“They are all true Princes and Princesses of the Realm. They are the blood of the dragon.”
And people in the hall began to applaud, though Alyssa noticed that not everyone appeared happy. Still, the court honored her and her siblings, and Alyssa knew that they would be treated as true born sons and daughters. She also knew, though, that those who disapproved of her mother would work to discredit them. She could tell by the grave expression on the Queen’s face, and her emerald green dress. Her children, Helaena and Daeron were dressed in green as well. It was such a stark contrast from the colors of House Targaryen that it had to mean something.

I just read What they Deserve and some thoughts are still running in my head... if the wedding had happened do you think Otto would have continued with his plans to crown Aegon or after Jace's birth would he throw away those plans to put his own child on the throne???
I think it would depend on which he considered more 'suited' for the role. Assuming Jace and Aegon both turned out the same, yeah, I think he would've put Jace on the throne. Likely having Rhaenyra killed at some point before Viserys died or right after.
Unfortunately for him, I think Jace and Aegon share that 'don't mess with my mother' gene so Jace likely would've had him removed as Hand just like Aegon did. Maybe even executed.
In a world in which Rhaenyra's sons are Otto's though, I don't think they'd turn out quite the same. Neither she nor her children would've had the same freedom as her marriages with Laenor and later Daemon allowed. They'd probably be very similar to Alicent's children in terms of upbringing so... in that scenario, I think Otto would default to the misogynistic nonsense that Westeros loved and put Aegon on the throne.
I would honestly expect Otto to use his newfound proximity to Rhaenyra to have her killed before she has any children. Perhaps setting it up so she dies in labor just like Aemma, which would likely weakon Viserys further and give Otto even more power.
If Otto had married Rhaenyra, I generally think Aegon would've been heir before his fourth nameday. 50/50 shot on him becoming king before his fifth, with Otto as his regent. I don't think he'd kill Viserys, but I think he would kill Rhaenyra and that losing her could destroy Viserys. The true wildcard in that situation is Daemon imo. His subsequent marriage to Laena might have stilled Otto's hand, given the power and influence (and dragons) that the Velaryon faction would wield. Plus, Daemon would have hated his guts twice over.
Probably still would've had a Dance, just with slightly different factions I suppose? ^^'

Hello 😄
Here I have not read the GRRM books but at the end of game of thrones I became interested in the Targaryen family. I read several things on the internet and then your story which is incredible. However there is a question that I ask myself, why rhaenys and corlys supported rhaenyra? She insulted them and laenor with her bastards. Is it only because their granddaughters rhaena and baela are daemon's daughters? Or there is an another reason? Especially since in addition there are rumors that say that daemon would have killed laenor. I'm sorry if that seems like a silly question. But as reading your story the reason why the velaryons support rhaenyra is well explained. I was wondering if this was also the case for the books so since you seem to be an expert on this period I allow myself to ask you.
Good luck, I can't wait to read your next chapter !
Hi there 🤗
Hum... if you want I would suggest you read "The World of Ice and Fire" just because of the amazing artwork <3 and the condensed version of the story which I think it's still enough for a very good understanding, though "Rise of the Dragon" is coming out later this month so that might also be worth it <3 it's only about House Targaryen. Ahhh I'm PRAYING for some good artwork because I need something good this year to lift my spirits!
About your question, I don’t like to call myself an expert on anything (my particular field of work teach us a LOT of humility (and imposter syndrome)), but I can say I maybe have spent more time reading and writing about this time period than most people -> anyone of you funny people brings out my word count and I’m blocking! I am kidding -> so I will do my best to answer you 🤗
We are never told directly but it's very clear they did so because Rhaenyra had been Laenor's wife (on paper), and their children were for all intents and purposes Laenor's children (on paper).
Tumblr media
Now to elaborate a bit on this, Laenor and Rhaenyra were terrible at best at pretending to have a functional wedding and a "Do you think everyone and their dogs is stupid AF?!" at worse. To avoid any confusions on anyone's part there is no mention whatsoever in the books that they had a bedding ceremony, even because Laenor left mid celebrations and left (haha double left) everyone wondering if the marriage had been consummated - very (very!) safe to assume it never was. In the meantime they spent their time apart (sorry y'all they weren't friends or besties watching each other's backs), and Rhaenyra spent all her time with Harwin Strong. For context she married in 114 AC - we don't know the month - and by the end of the year she had given birth to Jace. Moreover, his sisters were her favourites :) So besides not being good at pretending to actually having a marriage with Laenor, she was also not very good at pretending to be faithful. Same was true of Laenor though, who had his boy toys especially Qarl, but unlike Rhaenyra he couldn't get pregnant or get Qarl pregnant so no one cared. She went on to have two more kids by Harwin as we know. 3 in 4 years.
I will say that again because this gives me trauma. THREE IN FOUR YEARS.
Tumblr media
I'm not even going to bring up that later on there was not even two years between Aegon III and Viserys II.
Ok I am.
Tumblr media
At 25 Rhaenyra had five children and had been married twice. So look yourselves (I'm doing that right now) in the mirror and ask yourselves wtf are you doing with your lives.
Moving on.
Apart from this later on Laenor is killed, very likely by Daemon's orders so he could have Rhaenyra, and Rhaenyra and Daemon remarry like what 3 months after their spouses die? - baby Aegon was born by the end of 120 AC so they had to marry no later than month 4 and be like "Haha :D the baby came "early"". The rule here would be to wait between 6 months to a year before remarrying we are told by asoiaf standards to show respect. So by doing this, Daemon and Rhaenyra were showing they didn't really care their spouses had died recently.
Daemon and Rhaenyra:
Tumblr media
That's nice of them.
So, so far on Rhaenyra's track record of daughter-in-law she:
-Didn't have or pretended to have a real marriage with their son;
-Had a public affair with Harwin Strong, three sons that were clearly his, and even turned his sisters in her favourites;
-F_cked and married and got pregnant by their daughter's widow - her sister-in-law's husband - couple of months after their son died;
That was nice of her.
Tumblr media
Why would they still side with her anyone might ask?
Well, it's not really very well explained. Like me and @xenonwitch have discussed at length, and like she pointed out, Fire and Blood remains George's weakest work. I agree. I think it has tons of potential (that was recently completely wasted to the point it makes the book read like a f_cking masterpiece with absolutely no flaws in logic or plot or even character development) but it wasn't really expanded upon enough and we are left with trying to tie together all the missing links - and boy oh boy! do we have copious amounts of them - to the best of our abilities. I think there is something pretty cool about it in the sense that you can almost create your own story in how you think it makes the most sense. It's also frustrating because at the times you really have to make your brain work overtime to make something out of it that is believable and makes sense.
But my take on it. Well, from what we know of Corlys and Rhaenys they do strike me as pragmatic people who couldn't have illusions about who their son was. -> hells, as an Anon once pointed out, every lord plus their dog knew Laenor was gay. Gay gay. Like if there is a spectrum for sexuality it's like at one end.
Tumblr media
I mean. I get him. I am all about the men too. Like ladies no, thank you. No, thank you! If I was a man I would like d:ck as well.
This to say, they likely knew that the "Velaryon" princes were the best they were going to get so it was either take it or leave it. Let's say they said leave it because there's Baela and Rhaena. Well... ok sure, but Daemon was not the second in line for the Iron Throne. Baela and Rhaena were too far down in the line of succession, in fact so far, I believe this could be why they were not given the title of princesses.
So if they left it that was it for House Velaryon's aspirations to ever have a Velaryon king.
And now people can turn to me and say "Go f_ck yourself" to which I say "Bold of you to assume I have not already 🤗". I'm kidding.
They could turn to me and say "But Popcorn, maybe the Velaryons could push to have Baela and Rhaena married to Viserys's sons who were heirs after Rhaenyra. Maybe Baela could marry Aegon II and Rhaena could Aemond or some other similar arrangement.” BUT -> here comes that but-
Tumblr media
How likely would it be that Viserys, our sweet lovable Viserys, would like to have an alliance with the people who accused his beloved daughter and heir of High Treason and denounced her children and his grandchildren as bastards?
I would say not likely. Not likely at all.
So instead, Rhaenys and Corlys called it a day. The "Velaryon" princes did not have their blood but they had their names. Plus, with their engagement with their granddaughters they would get their blood on the throne eventually. Better to let things run smoothly.
As for Daemon very likely having ordered Laenor's death, all that was known for sure was that Qarl had killed him. If Daemon did it or not was a matter of dispute and likely, either the Velaryons didn't suspect him, or if they did maybe they rather not know the answer.
This is related to what I do in real life, but most of us have such experience with people we know, and the lengths most of us go to try and have peace and keep the family together knows almost no limits. While Viserys liked to bury his head in the sand I also think Rhaenys and Corlys had to do this sometimes for the sake of their heads maybe. 🤷🏽‍♀️
Now we never see it, or are told about it, but I would also suggest Rhaenys had some level of respect for Rhaenrya, and that she looked like she wanted her to be queen. At least her actions certainly say it. Hell she died for Rhaenyra's cause and fought for her too. Might have to do with what herself went through of being denied the throne for her sex, or maybe everything aside, they got along well enough. Maybe Rhaenys understood where Rhaenyra was coming from (i.e., gay husband) and knew herself well enough to assume to herself that in Rhaenyra's position she would have done either the same or similar. About her marriage to Daemon, again I think Rhaenys and Corlys had no illusions.
Rhaenyra and Daemon had a thing -> that we can debate how far it went but we talking third base at the very least -> before they ever married Laenor and Laena.
Tumblr media
And we know they wanted to marry but were told no by Walserys -> the OG Daemyra anti. Given that Rhaenys and Corlys married for love, maybe again they knew where their son and daughter in law were coming from and were like “Meh at least all the grandkids are together. Saves us a trip or two!”
I know sometimes we look at such situations and get enraged like HOW DARE THEY?! I WOULD HAVE NEVER STOOD SILENTLY WHEN... But what I see most in life is people staying silent and not bothering themselves or not wanting to cause trouble, especially in situations in which they will really gain nothing except lifting some weight from themselves and letting it out from their chests.
I also know this all requires a LOT of maturity from Rhaenys and Corlys and that (especially in light of recent clear cash grabbing events) I might be giving turtle man too much of a benefit of a doubt. This said, and Rhaenys and Corlys do strike me as being very pragmatic and rational. And all things considered, it’s the best explanation I got XD
I hope it makes some sense and thank you for having liked my version 🤗 I did my best to make it believable.
Tons of love to you! ❤️ And yes everyone I am writing the next chapter see:

This is so I remember to make some reference to eating trout and to give credit to Lucifer210 over at AO3 who mentioned it in the comments.

Can Robb disinherit Sansa? Does he have the power to do that? I think not. I think Robb just legitimized Jon and left it at that and this could be why the will is not going to end up being a big deal after all. Bran, Arya, Rickon, Sansa are all alive and will still be ahead of Jon.
We really don't know exactly what Robb has put down in his will until the next book comes out because there are so many variables and unknowns that GRRM has kept deliberately vague to throw in those twists and turns and keep things surprising. It's hard to guess here.
Can Robb disinherit Sansa? Can people be disinherited in Westeros? I think so.
We do have the case of Rohanne Webber who was threatened with disinheritance by her father:
Before his death, Lord Wyman attempted to marry Rohanne to his castellan, Ser Lucas Inchfield, but she refused him. As such, Wyman stated in his will that Rohanne had two years to marry after his death. If she would remain unwed, Coldmoat would be granted to her cousin, Ser Wendell Webber.
The Targaryens did this as well:
According to Archmaester Gyldayn, Princess Rhaenyra herself objected to the match as well, but agreed when King Viserys I threatened to appoint her half-brother Aegon as his heir over her if she would not wed Laenor.
It’s also been said that Aerys II was threatening to pass over Rhaegar and his line and disinherited Aegon and Rhaenys after Rhaegar’s death and named Viserys his heir instead. That’s why Daenerys would have more of a claim to the Iron Throne than Jon Snow even if he was trueborn - because Rhaegar and his line were disinherited.
Randyll Tarly threatened to disown Samwell Tarly.
I think Robb disinherited Sansa in his will precisely because of all the uncertainties surrounding the situation and the desire to keep WF out of Lannister hands. Robb and Catelyn were adamant that the Lannisters should never get the North.
By law Sansa is next in line of succession, so Winterfell and the north would pass to her." His mouth tightened. "To her, and her lord husband. Tyrion Lannister. I cannot allow that. I will not allow that. That dwarf must never have the north."  - Catelyn, ASoS
Considering this, I doubt Robb is going to leave it open to the risk of Jon refusing his offer or being unable to accept it. It’s not just enough to legitimize Jon Snow - can Jon actually leave the Night’s watch, even if a King asks him to? That’s a question that’s never been answered before and another variable. Disinheriting Sansa and leaving the North without a Stark heir would put pressure on the other houses/clans to make Jon King.
Now, a resurrected Jon may get out of his NW oaths because he was dead - but Robb does not know about any of this when he drafted his will. And if Jon could leave the NW, would he? We see him refuse Stannis’ offer because of his NW oaths and allegiance to the Old Gods. Would Robb leave that to chance?
Do bastards have any rights? What about bastards who have been  legitimized, do they go in at the end after the trueborn kids, or  according to birth order? What about widows? And what about the will of  the deceased? Can a lord disinherit one son, and name a younger son as  heir? Or even a bastard? There are no clear cut answers - GRRM
In the one case we know of where a bastard was legitimized while his trueborn siblings were still alive, a legitimized Addam Velaryon became the heir to Driftmark ahead of his younger trueborn brother Joffrey.
But again, GRRM says these cases are uncertain. What if the Lannisters argued that legitimized Jon Stark should go in at the end after the trueborn kids and therefore comes after Sansa Lannister? Why would Robb take that risk?
It’s easier for Robb to simply disinherit Sansa, rather than take the chance that the Lannisters/Tyrion wiggle their way in somehow.
So Sansa has two choices here. If she gains control of the Vale and it’s army, she can attack the current KITN/QITN/Lord/Lady of Winterfell and win the North that way. Or she can go to King’s Landing, petition the high septon to have her marriage annulled and then make a case to the current ruler of the North - whomever that maybe - to negate her disinheritance.
Or Tyion will have to die. This is not happening - he is 100% surviving the books and dying of old age in his bed.
If Sansa is still married to Tyrion, it will be hard for her to find support among the Northern houses. The North really loathes the Lannisters. Unlike in the show, in the books The North remembers. And even Stannis Baratheon has vowed that while he is alive, Sansa will never get Winterfell and Jon Snow is actively supporting him and aiding his campaign to win the North.
“Lady Lannister, you mean? I promise you, that will not happen whilst I live, Lord Snow.”  - Jon, ADwD
Apart from Jon, the North have other Starks they can rally behind - Arya and Rickon. We already see some Northern houses rising up against the Boltons in Arya’s name. I doubt Ramsay Bolton will survive the next book. Meanwhile, Manderly has thrown his support behind Rickon Stark because he has a better claim to WF than Arya and therefore undermines the Bolton claim to Winterfell via marriage to Arya Stark.
Now, Bran, Arya and Rickon have no problems with Robb’s will because Robb assumed they were dead when he drafted the decree. They become default heirs by simply turning up alive.
Of course, then the question becomes does Jon Stark - as the eldest Stark - come ahead of Bran Stark or behind Arya Stark? Can the will be discounted because Bran, Rickon and Arya are alive? Maybe, but according to Catelyn, once Jon is legitimized, it can’t be taken back. So what happens then?
Robb’s will and the spanner it throws into the works is why it's possible that there will be some discord among the Starks in the last two books. I don’t see Jon and Arya fighting. But as for the rest? All of GRRM's main houses/families have conflicts among members and I don't see why the Starks have to be the exception.
If the decree is relevant at all, it will come into play in the next book with Howland Reed/Maege Mormont and Northern plotting, fake Arya and Rickon, resurrected Jon and possibly Bran making it back south of the wall by the end of TWoW.

Dowry vs. Bride Price: Westeros and Tyrosh
Westeros has a dowry system, where a woman is given wealth (commonly in the form of portable property) by her father’s family upon her marriage; in medieval Europe the property is usually hers or her children’s to use, but in Westeros her husband has significant rights over it and can be the chief reason for their marriage. The most notable example is Walda Frey’s marriage to Roose Bolton, where the dowry was her weight in silver paid by her grandfather Walder to Roose. Furthermore, Lord Lyonel Corbray is even more "well pleased” with his second wife’s “immense” dowry than with the girl herself, as she is the daughter of a wealthy Gulltown merchant. Westeros is based on medieval Europe and is clearly patrilineal (lineage is traced from father to son) and patrilocal (the family resides near the husband’s parents); dowries were offered in such societies where land is valued more than manual labor, due to the concentration of land ownership in the hands of the few (the aristocracy).
We don’t have many detailed instances of Tyroshi marriage, but the cases we do know about seem to indicate that Tyrosh has a system of bride price, where a man or his family give a woman (or, more specifically, her parents) property or service either just before or even during their marriage. Aegon IV explicitly promised some form of wealth to the Archon for Daemon to marry Rohanne of Tyrosh, which Daeron II had to pay for the marriage to take place; Yandel referred to the exchange as a dowry, but he is clearly looking at this situation from a Westerosi lens, as dowries outside of the Daemon/Rohanne marriage are only mentioned as being settled on women. Rohanne’s bride price may seem like a special case akin to Daenerys’ wedding to Hizdahr zo Loraq, where the bride is of a much higher status than the groom and so their union necessitates a reversal of custom, but Fire and Blood introduces another Tyroshi wedding that seems to follow the practice of bride service: that of Orryn Baratheon and the Archon’s daughter. We are most familiar with bride service from the biblical Genesis, in which Jacob serves Laban for seven years in order to marry Laban’s daughter Rachel (although Laban tricked him into marrying his eldest daughter Leah, so Jacob had to labor seven more years for Rachel’s hand). Orryn, exiled from Westeros for 10 years, took service with the Archon and within one year had married his daughter, although after the marriage he continued to serve the Archon until his term was over (in real-world societies including in ancient Jewish law, sometimes the service/price is not paid all at once and the groom enters a contract where he promises to pay what he owes). Orryn’s exile status meant that he had no family to pay bride price, so he needed to take bride service under the Archon to wed his daughter. Bride price/service occurs in societies where manual labor is more valuable than land, and we can infer Tyrosh, a heavily urban, small, “bleak and stony island” does not value land as the main source of economic wealth; rather, manual labor seems to be essential, whether through the institution of slavery (slaves are said to outnumber freeborn Tyroshi three to one) or from mercenary companies. According to an evolutionary psychology theory, bride price also originates from polygamy since there is a relative scarcity of unmarried women, and we know from Racallio Ryndoon’s dozen wives that some polygamy is practiced in Tyrosh.
Some inferences about how Tyrosh’s bride price custom and how that may have impacted Tyroshi-Westerosi relationships under the cut:
Tyrosh is majority uxorilocal/matrilocal, perhaps even somewhat matrilineal: bride service in particular necessitates the couple living close to the bride’s parents. The children of Rohanne and the Archon’s daughter were both raised in their mother’s lands; obviously from necessity in Rohanne’s case, but the Archon’s daughter never went to Westeros with her own daughter to try to raise her near Storm’s End after her father’s term was over. It seems fairly easy to assume that Tyroshi “citizenship” is based on the origins of the mother, as it was in ancient Rome (all children of freeborn women were free no matter their fathers’ status), GRRM’s model for Valyria. Matrilineality facilitates the incorporation of foreigners into the society, which is important for mercantile Tyrosh.
This is partially the reason for the imbalance between the number of Tyroshi men versus women in the books when this is not the case for their ‘sister cities.’ Several Tyroshi men appear in the books as sea captains and sellswords, and background Tyroshi sailors are easily distinguished by their dyed hair. Lyseni women have been significant side characters since book one (with Doreah, who is Dany’s slave) and are in-universe famous for being the beautiful consorts of Westerosi kings. There are even some Myrish women who have recent prominence in Taena and Serala (note: it isn’t said whether or not they are related to any Myrish magisters). The only Tyroshi women who have prominence are long dead nobility, Rohanne and Kiera and the Archon’s daughter (all three are certainly connected to the Archon in some fashion). In a matrilocal society, the women do not often leave their natal home (whereas in a patrilocal society women have to reside with their husband’s family), while the men frequently leave in order to make their fortune and thus be able to afford the bride price. If the city is matrilineal, the glut of male Tyroshi expats makes even more sense since they will not be able to inherit most of their mother or father’s property, so leaving the island is often the only way to make a decent living.
The bride price practice explains why Kiera of Tyrosh, unique among Westerosi royal consorts, was married to two Targaryen princes: Valarr died in 209 in the Great Spring Sickness, while Kiera’s only living child Vaella was born in 222. We don’t know when Kiera and Daeron were married, but the age gap between her stillborn sons (pre-208) and daughter is big enough (at least 14 years) that whoever Archon Kiera was related to might have had his term expire, and issues of her fertility might’ve caused other related Tyroshi women to be recommended for the crown prince. But the double marriage to Kiera may have happened because amid a country wracked by a devastating plague, ironborn raids, a hard-fought rebellion, and rampant tyranny, the crown simply did not have the funds to pay another bride price.
The Blackfyre daughters were able to marry well, whereas it was difficult to find matches for the sons: Daemon had seven sons, five of whom reached adulthood, but we know only of two or perhaps three (Haegon and Captain Daemon’s father; if you don’t believe Maelys was Haegon’s son, then his father as well) who had sons that carried on the Blackfyre name. In an aristocratic society with a dowry system like Westeros, the Blackfyre brothers could have traded on their noble birth and royal blood to marry an heiress (even a wealthy merchant’s daughter like Lyonel Corbray did), but in Tyrosh they would’ve needed to pay a bride price or spend years in bride service. This could explain why Daemon II was clearly not married by age 22 (yes he was gay, but so was Laenor Velaryon and he wed Rhaenyra at age 20), partially why Haegon waited so long to cross the Narrow Sea (he was in bride service beforehand, and after he needed a few sons to secure the succession), and perhaps even why Aenys Blackfyre traveled to the Great Council to become king while his nephew was crowned (he didn’t have a male heir). A bride price system might explain why the male Blackfyre line died out by three generations when there had been so many heirs, if the family wealth was mostly tied up in marriage dues.
As for the daughters, I’m fairly certain that after the family went into exile, the proposed betrothal between Aegor and Calla was scrapped due to lack of advantages (Aegor was now a landless sellsword whereas Calla was one of perhaps three exiled princesses and relative of the Archon). Calla or her sisters would’ve been a brilliant match for any ambitious, wealthy Essosi magister who wanted leverage over the Targaryens. Bloodraven’s statement in The Mystery Knight that Daemon II’s brothers and sisters would seek revenge if he executed Daemon II indicates that the sisters were powerful and capable of claiming the throne (if their brothers had died), which probably made them more attractive matches. The wealth their marriages brought the family might’ve helped the female line survive to canon era, though in a much better position than is usually speculated.

"Mother told me something!" she exclaimed walking up to Aemond.
"What?" he asked, slightly irritated. They were in the dragon pits for one of their lessons. Aemond hated attending, but his father was always insistent on him attending, according to Aemond that was the only time his father ever took an interest in his life.
"Well, there's   a small council meeting today" she spoke
"And?" he interrupted,
She rolled her eyes, whacking his shoulder "let me finish...she wishes to reunite the family, by- " she hesitated, unsure of how Aemond may react.
"by?" he questioned, leaning into her and the dragon keeper spoke to Jacaerys about Vermax.
"she is going to offer you a dragon egg from Syrax's new clutch- my idea!" she rushed out "and, by proposing a marriage" the last part was whispered, nervous looking to the floor.
"Between whom?" he questioned, curiosity in his tone.
"Me and you" she whispered.
Aemond didn't reply, he is straightening, standing tall. Unsure of how to react, before forcing out "and how do you feel about it?" he said, slowly, moving to lightly brush his hands with hers.
"well-" she cleared her throat, moving up to look at him "that was also my idea." She said, eyes not looking into his.
"Really?" he said lowly, unsure "you? an-and me?"
"Yes, she wanted to betroth Jace and Heleana, but I suggested us instead. We are already the best of friends and i-" she stopped herself. She had had a crush on Aemonds for a few moons now, ever since his eleventh name day. She had always thought him handsome, but lately, she had begun seeing him as more than her friend. So when her mother proposed her brother and aunts' betrothal she interrupted, suggesting she and Aemond instead. They were closest in age, other than Daeron who was still in Oldtown, and already got on well. And she couldn't remember a time Helaena and Jace had ever interacted, outside of family dinners. Other than when Jace barraged into her room when Helena was there, and even then it was a simple greeting.
"You did?" he asked again.
"Are you mad?" she asked cautiously.
"I'm happy you did, I wouldn't want to marry anyone but you," he said, grabbing her hand properly before moving his attention back to the dragon lesson.
"Aemond, we have a surprise for you," Aegon remarked after the lesson was done. They were about to head back to the keep when Aegon ran up to them, shoving himself between the pair.
Luke had run off somewhere with Jace, leaving just Aegon, herself and Aemond.
Aegon pulled her away from Aemond, his arm wrapping around her waist, and his other around Aemonds shoulder.
"What is it?" Aemond questioned, as Aegon redirected them back into the dragon pit.
"Something very special," he said, looking at Aemond before winking at her.
"you're the only one of us without a dragon". Aegon stated, his arm beginning to rub her waist, pulling her tight to him. As if to prevent her from moving away, a common act he did with her, he was always wanting to steal her away from Aemond the second he was in her vicinity.
"Indeed"
"And we felt bad about it, so we found one for you" Aegon spoke.
"What, how?" she and Aemond spoke at the same time. Her tone, accusing. Doubtful. How they had found a wild dragon in the dragon pits beyond her. Aemonds however was curious and hopeful. She knew how desperate he was. she thought he would have been content with the dragon pick she had spent hours picking out for him. But she supposed an unhatched egg was nothing in comparison to a real dragon. If there was one anyway.
"The gods Provided," Aegon said, winking at her, once again, as if she was in on the joke.
Luke and Jace ran in, holding a rope.
A rope, not with a dragon attached but a pig. A pig with wings attached to it.
Aemond's face dropped.
"Behold, the pink dread" the boys shouted laughing at Aemond's confusion and misery.
"Be sure to mount her carefully, the first flights are always rough" Aegon mused.
Aemond ran off, moving deeper into the pit for a real dragon. She went to follow him, but Aegon's tight grip on her waist prevented it.
"let me go!" she struggled out of Aegon's grip "why would you do that?" she questioned.
Aegon's face fell "it was just a joke!" he insisted.
"not for Aemond it isn't!" she shook her head and looked at the three boys "how would you like it if everyone around you had something that you didn't. something that was just out of your reach, and everyone taunted you for it!" she insisted, her eyes holding so much anger, that Luke and Jace flinched. Aegon moved to grab her hand, but he stepped back and scowled at the boys.
"he's your brother!" she looked at Aegon.
"Yeah well, he's a twat" he insisted.
"Gods Aegon!" she rolled her eyes, "have you forgotten that up until six years ago you too were without a dragon! you had to claim Sunfyre, your egg didn't hatch and yet no one taunted you for it!" she shouted.
She shook her head, at the boy's lack of remorse and Aegon's lack of response.
She turned to leave, quick on her feet. Aegon ran up to catch up with her. "wait!" he begged. "Senya, I'm sorry"
"Are you?" she turned and stopped walking, causing Aegon to come to a quick stop.
"Yes, I hadn't realised how to hurt it could make you feel," he said, slowly, waiting for her reaction.
"it isn't my feelings you hurt, it was Aemonds, your brother!" she went to leave again.
"I'm sorry ok, take it or leave it" his words meant one thing, but his eyes said another. His eyes were sad almost begging for her forgiveness.
"I'm disappointed in you all," she said before leaving, not turning to the boys' shouts for her to come back.
"Aemond" she spoke, she had been looking for him for hours. "Are you all right?" she asked softly, moving forward. he was covered in dirt and soot.
He didn't respond, his head was bowed. Hiding his face from her. "You did it again." She signed, moving closer to wrap her arms around him.
He buried his head in her shoulder, he had never been good with words, finding it hard to express his emotions. But with her he was willing to express them through actions, "you will have a dragon one day, I know it" she whispered, "I promise" it wasn't something she could promise, but she knew Aemond, and he would stop at nothing to get his dragon.
------
A moon had passed since her brother, Joffrey's birth. And whispers were once again filling the corridors. It was no secret, only denial that fuelled them that she was the only one safe from them. Seen as legitimate, despite her pale complexion. But the fact was that all of her mother's children were bastards. Her brothers were more obvious, perhaps if they shared her Valyrian features they would escape the rumours, just as she does. And now with the birth of Joffrey, whose eyes and hair darken each day, the rumours flow freely. Prompted by the queen. Her mother was growing nervous, as he passed past more talks of returning to Dragonstone occupied the dinner table. And with the recent banishment of Ser Harwin strong from the court, they would be forced to say goodbye to the red keep.
Jace had discovered the truth, but Luke was still clueless, and she hoped to keep it that way. She saw the sadness in her eyes when he told her. She understood. But unlike, Jace she didn't have a mother to comfort her when she found out. Simply a mother that stated it as fact 'she's not yours Laenor, you should not care for her as if she is', she had overheard it and all her mother spoke upon her confrontation was 'I loved your father but I regret it every day'. With Jace he got a hug and comforting words, saying he was a Targaryen and that was all that mattered. Hers resulted in yelling and a wall placed between them. They loved each other. That was true. but her mother was always hesitant about it. Always quick to speak to her as if she were the man who abandoned her all those years ago. And for that, she would always envy her brothers. Their father was there to love them, their to hold them and as a result their mother never held regret for having them. But she did for her.
Her mother had loved both of her children's fathers, yet the resentment she held over her daughters, the underlying feeling of betrayal only carried over to her, despite her mothers longing for a daughter rather than sons.
And now things would be made worse, they would be leaving for Dragonstone. She would be forced to leave her Aemond. Their relationship would now only exist through letters. A betrothal had been discussed, but not confirmed. And she knew her mother had plans to ward her in Winterfell in the coming year.
She would miss the Red keep, not the vipers of court, but her family. Unlike her mother and brothers, she did not long to distance herself from them. She got along well enough with her uncles and aunt. Though Heleana was often in a mind of her own, and Daeron was warded in oldtown. She liked to think of them as her friends. and Alicent had always been kind to her, giving her some sense of maternal love, which she sometimes found lacking from her own mother.
They were at the docks, her mother still recovering from birth, and would travel by ship with Joffrey and Luke. As she, Jace and Laenor flew.
It would be a quick journey, but a journey she would hate in its entirety.
She did not know when she would return when she would see Aemond, Helaena, and even Aegon, again. And she would miss them all, and pray (even to the seven if she must) that she would see them again soon.
If only she knew the sorrow that followed their departure, and would allow them to meet once again.

An Indecent Proposal- Interlude- The Green Plot
A03,Prologue, Chapter 1,Chapter 2,Chapter 3, Chapter 4,Chapter 5, Chapter 6
A/N: Here is a very short double update while I decide what comes next for Daemon and Rhaenyra, who do not appear in this chapter. (Sorry, I'll make it up to you later.) But this interlude with the Greens needed to be written, and it needed to follow Chapter 6.
The spy stole his way into the Red Keep, eager to bring what he had seen to his mistress.
He knocked on her chamber door only to enter with her permission.
Queen Alicent was resplendent in her green brocade gown. The spy removed his hood.
“What news do you bring me, Ser Criston?” Alicent asked. She held a glass of Arbor Gold, but from the look of it the wine was doing little to soothe her agitation.
“Prince Daemon visited the dragon pit, my queen.”
“Did he remove the eggs?” Alicent asked, her eyes flashing.
“Not that I could see, Your Grace. But he will be diligent in guarding them. We must tread carefully if your plot is to succeed.”
“Those eggs belong to my children. It is their birth right. Rhaenyra has no children of her own. Her marriage to Ser Laenor will yield no heirs.”
A knock on the door interrupted their conversation. “Who is it?” Alicent called.
“The Hand of the King.”
Alicent exhaled in relief and bade her father to enter. That relief disappeared when she noticed her father’s grim visage.
“I bring bad tidings, my daughter. Princess Rhaenyra is with child.”
The wine glass shattered against the stone wall. “Impossible. We know Ser Laenor’s tastes do not include his lady wife.”
“This would not be the first time the spoiled cunt had lured an unwilling man into her chambers, my queen,” Ser Criston said, with no small amount of bitterness.
Otto Hightower snorted. “I do not believe you were unwilling, Ser. You were happy enough to bed the princess and willing to abandon your position to whisk her away to Essos.”
“Father, Ser Criston has restored his honor in our service. Do not continue to condemn him for foolish mistakes. But certainly, any child she bears will be a bastard. Once the babe is born without Targaryen features, we can move against Rhaenyra. Aegon will be named the heir.”
“What makes you so certain the babe will lack the Targaryen features?” Otto said. “You recall the old rumors of Daemon and Rhaenyra’s dalliance. Perhaps he returned to court to play the part of her whore.”
Alicent scowled for a moment, thinking. “That would work to our advantage in the end. It would lead to enough evidence to convince Viserys to cast them both aside. It goes against all honor and decency for the Princess of Dragonstone to birth a bastard. And when Viserys realizes that only his brother could be the father, Viserys will send Daemon to the Wall.”
Otto looked uncertain. “Father, you must do what you can to poison Viserys against his brother. You have done it before with the use of the White Worm. Do so again. Ser Criston will continue to watch the dragon pit, and when the time is right, he will fetch the eggs and present them to my children.”
“Your cunning and wisdom has grown to match your beauty, Alicent. Your mother would be proud.”
“Mother always wished for me to be the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, for me to establish a royal line of Hightower succession. I will not disgrace her.”
“No, my love, you are a credit to our house. We will light the way to a brighter future for Westeros.” Otto kissed his daughter’s forehead and left the chamber.
Ser Criston remained, his dark eyes burning in the flickering light. Alicent crossed the room to meet him, enfolding herself in his embrace. “Ser Criston, you love me, do you not?”
“More than anything, my queen.”
“Then prove it. Get me with child and make me forget my king’s foul touch.”
