THEYRE BASED ON A REAL FAMILY (and the whole family has "im easily overstimulated" hair cuts, its so relatable)

It's cheesy. full of stuff you know is meant for kids and that corporate made them do. but I really liked it. I know the whole bit is that the family is weird. I don't really like that they used the word weird instead of autistic but i can kinda understand why they had to do it. i found myself relating the characters constantly. The way they run away when things get overwhelming, communicate through their interests, stim when they have big feelings (they all have their own, and most of them have a couple they do) and the way the situation their in affects them. It is not perfect representation but it did a good enough job for me.

the youngest child of ted and elaine mccarrick, wes was a kid who is full of life. she’s the kind of kid who did things to make you smile, and it usually worked. she was warm and inviting, a little naive, but she had a strong support system.

her parents divorce when she’s six, she doesn’t quite understand it but her dad moves out, and her grandma and multiple cousins move in. it’s a lively household, between her mom, who works as a nurse, and her siblings, and her cousins, it was never really quiet and there was never a lot of room.

despite the split, her parents maintain that their children have a relationship with both of them, and truthfully, wes is a daddy’s girl. she and her dad were cut from the same cloth, happy go lucky, fun loving, a bit silly, he’s the one who introduces her to movies. it’s their thing, watching and critiquing them together, and it’s not whatever is in theatres either. they went for all times of filmmaking, new wave, surrealist, and more.

it really stuck with wes, who herself had begun making movies, mostly horror/fantasy/scifi stuff with her friends-- she writes and directs and occasionally, she’ll don a costume and star in them. they’re silly little things, but her family always sat down for her “premieres.”

her formative years are marked with plenty of things, sports, deaths of distant family members, a cousin or two who gets caught in the wrong crowd and ends up in jail, and throughout this, wes remains a rock for her family.

she’s in high school, and she gets into the eclectic crowd, the outcasts, the weirdos, the ones who smoked under the bridge, and partied out in an abandoned trailer near the desert. these freaks were her freaks. they accepted her with open arms, as she them.  

she chooses thales because she always wants to see the east coast, and frankly, as much as she loves her family, she wants to be free of them. and they have a fantastic film program. so!

she meets steven in their first film class together, and they’re fast friends, despite her usual weariness of YET another film bro, steven proves to be a good egg. so she thinks. she finds out through him talking that he might not be the most faithful to his girlfriend, and as much as she doesn’t like meddling, she thinks it’s only right to let clarissa, who she doesn’t really know well, know. however, before there’s a chance, everything happens-- now she’s stuck wondering if she should reveal the truth, or let sleeping dogs lie.

nana is different, nana and her dated her sophomore year, nana’s freshman year. it wasn’t serious. but they were fond of each other. they eventually break up, but they stay friendly, waving to each other in the halls, chatting at parties.

both the disappearance and the murder is weird for wes, who by all accounts, isn’t great at dealing with bad shit. she prefers to laugh about things. laugh about everything. because if she doesn’t laugh, she’ll cry.

wes is a mess, a free-spirit, a walking contradiction. she’s very independent minded, the kind of person who does things without thinking so much about the consequences, this leads her into trouble sometimes. like nicking something from a convenience store, or stealing a stop sign as a prank. she’s definitely the kind to goof off and not exactly dedicate her full attention to something. and while she’s in genuinely good spirits on most occasions, she has a staunch ‘no asshole’ policy. the type to defend the underdogs, and go after bullies. she’ll punch you with a smile on her face, and yet it ends up being more unnerving than you realize. she’s a bit of a ditz, as well, never the best at school, but can talk your ear off about the going ons of the world. she’s a lovable dumbass, for sure, and loyal to a tee once you get her as a friend.

horror movie fan! her favorites are some of the oldies, like dracula and  the bride of frankenstein! and some new ones! big fan of jordan peele’s work, as well as ari aster’s! but mostly really advocates for women directors and directors of color!

also does roller derby! she picked this up her first year at thales and fell in love with it, i can’t think of a name for her yet, but she’s a blocker, won’t hesitate to elbow some dick at the bar

kinda a tomboy? she’s always been! she’s rough and tumble and not afraid to get down and dirty with someone, i.e. will join those football games on the quad or crawl through the mud for a scene to shoot

doesn’t know if she wants to be a director/writer or a cinematographer honestly.... she loves the technical aspects of film as much as the making the stories

S1E1: The Competition Begins

okie dokie first ever episode of dance moms rewatch starts now :0 i actually remember watching this the very first time it aired on lifetime because i was channel surfing and saw a commercial for it earlier that day. that was the summer between 8th and 9th grade. ah memories... i didnt know what to expect because i did dance when i was a kid but not on a competition team and it was mostly ballet so i was pretty unfamiliar with this whole world. 

anyway lets begin. this is probably gonna be a longer post than what i’ll end up writing for the other episodes in season 1 bc the first episode introduces so much info, just a heads up

Act 1: (aside: yes its insufferable to divide this into “acts” when its really just like “segments separated by commercial breaks” but thats how they’re called in actual tv scripts so im just going with that cuz i cant think of a better/easier way uwu)

god this is so fucking early 2010s lmao

i miss these days where they were just talented nobodies from pittsburgh on a low budget reality tv show that nobody even knew would be successful. and the bad hair and makeup but idk if that was also just a 2011 thing lol

THE REAL HOUSEWIVES GREEN SCREEN INTROS IM DYING

the chalkboard !!!! they werent doing the pyramid on the mirror yet 

(apparently abby never did anything similar to the pyramid thing but the producers made her and it became a whole Thing on the show and thats why the moms were like wtf is this bullshit the first week)

mackenzie looks like a toddler. chloe is so tiny. theyre the 2 who changed the most physically over the course of the show

i remember watching this for the first time being used to ballet lyrical and jazz but never having done or really seen acro/gymnastics in dance choreo and being SO flabbergasted. i was thinking “a chin stand is not dancing what the actual hell” and yknow what? i was right

Act 2:

okay unpopular opinion alert: i agree with a lot of what abby says about stuff like this but her delivery is flawed, to but it euphemistically, that being said i think the production team of the show and the fame inflating her ego changed all of this somewhere over the course of the second season and its really sad to see :/ i can expand on that thought later tho

aw paige crying bc abby correcting her (but not saying anything personal or out of line, just technique corrections (at based on what we were shown, we dont know everything she said oop)) shes a sensitive kid she never should have been put on this show :( 

paige looks exactly like her mom i didnt realize that before

nia and holly were done so dirty throughout the whole series in terms of the narrative the producers set up about nia being the weakest link :/ 

Act 3:

cathy’s entire involvement in the show from the very beginning was so painfully obviously scripted (or at least heavily staged) 

vivi was also done dirty by the show’s narrative and she was only 6 and they presented her as like the butt of the joke bc her mom’s “character” was crazy and also she wasnt good at dance. i wonder how she feels about the show now that shes a teenager hmm. she really seemed not to give a fuck about dance for better or for worse when she was a kid tho so maybe she doesnt care ?

in what universe would an owner of another competitive dance studio bring her own kid to another studio more than an hour’s drive away, AND be under the impression that she could compete with them in a week, especially when they showed the kids’ and moms’ shocked reaction at the start of the episode to having to learn a dance in a week and compete it? like really what is the point of cathy and vivi being a part of this show im so ????

Act 4: 

THE MINISTER DAWN OUTBURST HOW DID I FORGET ABOUT THIS

this fight is about 50% of what got them a full season 1 and then things took off from there tbh. the other 50% was the electricity dance but thats a point for next episode..... :)

“you’re a minister act like one” “YOU’RE RIGHT I AM A MINISTER! LET’S PLAY THE BIBLE GAME ABBY, WHEN JESUS SAW THINGS THAT WERE WRONG HE WENT AFTER THEM, AND YOU’RE NOT GOING TO DO THIS TO MY KID” ma’am i think the wrongs jesus addressed were of slightly more importance than a preteen being told she cant take a dance class if shes violating the studio’s dress code

this is so good bc it wasnt staged afaik and there are regular students all throughout the building just STARING at them like lmao what even is going on, so im pretty sure this is real???

regardless, yeah dont wear socks and a tshirt to an acrobatics class, thats common fucking sense

another cameraman-in-mirror sighting, but its hard to think about angles when filming spontaneous drama like this, so i wont count it against them

“you called me fat” (i remember that being in the episode but thats not on the episode available through lifetime on demand that im watching from my moms tv hmmmmmm) “i told you to close and tuck in your two-piece costume, theres a big difference. HOW CAN YOU REMEMBER THAT BUT YOU CAN’T REMEMBER TO TURN YOUR FEET OUT” uh scream

she really called the police on this woman i cannot handle this. can you imagine being a police officer responding to this call? 

“we have a parent thats out of control. pardon? no shes doesnt have weapons, just her mouth” iconic

im sorry im still not over the hair and makeup. the flat hair with the side bangs. the black pencil eyeliner applied all the way around the eye. why did any of us think this was a look :( why did we do this :(

Act 5:

they went all the way to phoenix to compete 3 numbers, only 2 of which are shown in the episode.

i think this is the only time they ever went to west coast dance explosion because its an actual competition and they wouldnt allow filming after this lol i think they did go to wcde one weekend in addition to a competition where they were filming but it wasnt shown or mentioned at all

abby not wanting brooke and paige to have a french manicure on stage if theyre the only ones in the group with the french tips is perfectly valid idk why it was framed as some crazy micromanaging shit

i also am really not a fan of the whole “high functioning alcoholic wine mom/crazy stage mom” schtick they were pushing for the first few episodes of this show

in retrospect i feel like so many of the quips in this episode were intentionally fucking crazy just to get the audience engaged enough to want to watch more episodes...

“see those girls down there, those girls with the legs? thats who you’re up against, so step it up”

abby warning them that its dangerous for their little party hats to slip when they’re doing aerials and pirouettes and stuff: “what if you were at radio city music hall and they had the ice rink out and you were doing a side aerial and fell 13 stories down and died, huh?” fantastic point abby thank you for saying that to 5 girls ages 8-12 less than 5 minutes before they went on stage. perfect time for a teaching moment like that :)

i forgot how bad the camera work was in the first few episodes for footage of their performances. like they really didnt think the show’s audience would actually want to watch the kids dance, the producers and editors thought we just wanted to see stage mothers yelling at each other lol

also the mic feed over the music of abby talking to herself giving them corrections while watching them dance on stage.... im so glad they quit doing that. i dont remember them doing it like that for any other episode, i hope im right

this choreo is very basic and its a cute dance i guess but its very cringe in some places and for the first episode this is such a forgettable group routine

their scandalized reaction to placing third and the sad piano music is so funny honestly

and maddies reaction in the interview which was almost definitely fed to her by the producers where shes like “i win all the time i dont really know what its like to LOSE i always win or get runner up” so many of maddies lines from season 1 interviews sound so fake and she was probably too naive to know they were getting her to say that stuff so they could paint her as a conceited brat (she was EIGHT)

the trio costume was so ugly im sorry (is it supposed to be like a 50s pinup bathing suit?) (and the headband thing looks so bad) and also the music is bad but they had no real authority over that bc of copyright stuff

chloe’s headpiece coming forward and the ensuing drama was another moment in the episode that really solidified public interest in the show imho.... 

“YOU’RE IN THE BAR HAVING A DRINK AND YOUR KID’S HEADPIECE IS FALLING OFF” “it did not FALL OFF it CAME FORWARD it was FINE!!!”

“mistakes happen, we’re human.” “YOU are. mistakes like that dont happen to me”

and then the “next time on dance moms” with the WILDLY INAPPROPRIATE electricity dance, of course. genuinely that was really smart of the producers in terms of structuring things to generate intrigue lol. and obviously it ended up working....

Last movie I saw: I just recently watched deadman, its one of my favorites. It's kinda like an artsy, psychadellic, like, I dont wanna say western because that genre has an lot of tropes and cliches that this movie doesn't really have but it's set when industrialzation was starting to spread towards the west, more specifically to the film, the Pacific northwest of the US. It's a good movie to watch on a rainy, chilly night.

Last thing I googled: what 6 feet is in meters ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I suck at math.

Favorite musician: I'm taking this question as favorite single musician and I have lots but the first 2 that come to my head are Chopin and Klaus Flouride (one of my fav bassists)

I was in the market today and it was playing and I was singing it to myself, then I noticed a lot of people were doing the same and they were all different age groups and genders, it was cute. Damn that song is catchy... ~oooooooooh shush...

Do I get asks: Lol I actually haven't had an ask yet. Wish I did though, I can be fun sometimes.

Blogs following: I like following lots of different stuff. This is a place I like, try to expose myself to art, music, and other things that put my heart in a nice place. It can backfire sometimes though, whether its something that puts me into feelings or seeing people being stupid in comments or you know, the fact racist blogs can exist on here. I'm happy I made this though, it's been more positive than negative for sure.

What I'm wearing: I'm wearing some sort of cardigan like sweater that doesnt open up or have buttons and its burgundy (my fav color) with black jeans and socks tbh. Also my glasses.

Dream trip: Prague would be interesting, theres a lot of cool art and architecture there. I'm not religious or anything but I feel like visiting St. Peter's Square would be really surreal and kind of creepy? Going to a place like Australia or what @surrealistwaltz said, Greenland would be neat. I feel like those places could make you feel as though you're on a completely different planet.

Dream Job: I wanna teach history! Preferably high school, then if I cant stand how kids act I'll work my way up to the collegiate level. I wanna teach history because looking back at what we learn in schools here in America is watered down, especially when it comes to the bad that Americans have done and the negative impact its had on groups of parole and honestly, bug chunks of the globe.I believe there needs to be at least on teacher in a students k-12 scholastic career who calls out the borderline history revisonment that is being taught to kids so wrecklessly. The United States definitely needs to do what they do in Germany when it comes to teaching about atrocities committed in the past. Whomever is on the winning side of history should NOT MATTER. If theres a group of people that has been suppressed or continues to be suppressed, there needs to be at least ONE person who introduces the brutal hard truth of what happened. Here in the states you get the "I didn't participate in slavery or the genocide of Native Americans, it's not something I need to hear in detail" and it literally pisses me off, it misses the whole point of education. This fires me up, sorry.....

Favorite food: literally any type of pasta or noodles. It doesnt matter if it's in soup, if its Italian, Chinese, Japanese, vietnamese, if it has noodles and doesn't have meat then I'm so happy to just demolish whatever is in front of me. Also chips and salsa is refreshing and satisfying. I'm half Mexican so any type of Mexican food that doesn't use anything from animals is always a go to. My fav fruits are cherries, tangerines, and pears. My favorite veggies are asparagus, green beans, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts. I can make some v good Brussels sprouts.

Languages: ehh I speak pretty bad Spanish but the foundation is there so when I decide to take it back up when I go to a university, I should be able to learn a lot easier than I did in high school. If not because I have foundation and basic understanding of the language then its because I actually WANT to learn it as opposed to when I was a teenager. German would be really cool too because if I teach and I get upset I can just yell in German and people would think I'm actually insane and hopefully would cut out whatever nonsense they were doing.

Play any instruments: I play Bass off and on. I first got my bass when I was 12, I would just mess around until I was like 14, then I taught myself how to read bass tabs so if there was a song I really liked, I could look up the tablatures and teach myself how to play it and still do that. I wish I would've taken lessons though.

1. What is the oldest memory you have?

Oh man uhh,, well this is kinda weird and idk if it counts as a legit memory but when my mom was pregnant with me she was o b s e s s e d with law and order so every time i hear it i get a very weird sense of nostalgia. Like the first time i brought that up to her she explained why and i was like ...oh damn

3. Would you ever consider going abroad? Why or why not?

Well if it was studying abroad, idk, maaaybe? I guess it really depends on where it is and how passionate i am about what i want to do (which, as of right now, is sorta kinda maybe passionate enough. it’s animation and junk). It’d be really hard to leave everything behind but it’d be an amazing experience. Now if it was just traveling then FUCK YEAH because i wanna see everythiiiing

Ah well I really want to get good at piano!! I started in like fifth grade but I kinda stopped after learning some of the basics and the finger positions. So right now I’m just kinda floating along teaching myself using synthesia videos on youtube lmao. I really should start to learn sight reading (i only know a little) and im sure some of the finger positions are still wrong but eh I’m doing what works for me yknow. Since it’s not a priority I’m not like, pouring my soul into it, but it’s something that I’ve taken up casually

O h n o i dont want to choooooose BUT pokemon pearl will always have a very special place in my heart. Sinnoh is basically my home man I could go into a huge ramble about how important it is to me but I think that answers the question enough lmao. The pokemon mystery dungeon series is really good too... (namely blue rescue team and explorers of time) even though they’re associated with people that are kinda “ehh” to me now they’re really wonderful and beautiful as games

8. Tell a funny story (about you or a friend) that will stay in your mind forever.

Omg oh man...my memory is so bad...I swear lots of funny things have happened in my life and I laugh a lot with my friends but I just can’t remember anything specific ;w;

9. What’s the worst movie based on a book you’ve seen?

Oh gosh the only movie i remember seeing based on a book was guardians of ga’hoole, I was probably too young to judge whether it was bad or not tho lmao. I remember being just infatuated with the constant flying animations in the scenes with open skies, it was like I was flying ovo

10. What are your must-haves when going on a trip?

Light blue weighted blanket, floppy stuffed dolphin, old white floppy stuffed dog named rudo (when i named him i was too young to pronounce pluto from mickey) “jingle pup” (small stuffed dog with santa hat i got for christmas when i was three) plushes i made of my first two ocs, pillows, phone, 3ds, laptop and respective chargers

11. What’s your greatest achievement so far in life?

Probably the recovery progress I’ve made so far 💙 A year or two ago over the course of several months I was admitted to four inpatient places for lots of bad mental shit. Stuff was reaallly bad but I’ve gotten way better, it’s almost uncomfortable bc i feel like if i have all this mental bs going on i *should* be suffering lmao. But yeah, it’s good, and it’s making me better at helping my friends when they need it owo crazy stuff man

By far my favorite month here in san francisco. Poetry month, earth week, bay area dance week, Japanese cherry blossom (japanese festival two weekends long) and well just for many more reasons. Im starting a blog here because writing takes too long sometimes and I just have so much to say. Today I skipped class and listened to ELO while finishing my dad’s birthday card. it says, “Let’s take a trip under the sun and ride to..” and when you open the card it’s going to have the metallica tickets I bought us! Im so cheap.. it was close to $400 gree whiz.. but you can’t put a price on love, and he’s spent soo much on my existence alone, this is the least I can do. Love that man, I got us general admission floor, because we are going to rock our socks off in that stadium! I think it’s the same stadium when we saw red hot chili Peppers. I also drew his motorcycle on the front. There’s some more cute nice sweet stuff inside and back of it, I’ll take pics. Went to A USF tour, it was ok. Nothing special. What I did like though is that to get a degree in education (i think it’s everywhere in california), I need to get a bachelor’s in ANYTHING I want then plus one year of just focusing on the education/teaching aspect. Like i can major in forestry or agriculture or the hindu or buddhism culture and fucking spend just one more year in teaching then have a master’s in education! what the fuck so cool!! LOVE THAT SHIT. In texas its just four years of education classes. They take GI Bill and if i study abroad the benefits transfer over! what i dont like is that.. I didnt really see attractive people.. and im not sure how the party scene is.. honestly it’s just that im not attracted to teethings i dont know about. Like i want student life to be great, that’s why my heart is in texas, Austin because I know student life in those universities kick ass.. so for that I scheduled a college to at UC Berkeley, see how that goes.. OR EVEN MAJOR IN ASTRONOMY ugh i like the criteria for a teaching certificate in CA, im basically free. But My heart has not been set in a university yet.. we’ll see.. In the morning i received a package and a letter. the package was from elena with all kinds of cute things in it, from organic mango herbal tea to shrimp socks to a small cute bag, and a cute note she wrote me that i taped to my wall and it had a skunk and bunnies and she pointed to the skunk and said that was me because i stink. SO cute. Love that bitch. Then a letter from abby (a very special girl at my mom’s school that comes in and talks to her and eats lunch with her) and it said she hopes i have a good easter. SO sweet I called my mom and we talked while she had lunch. Wish i can do that everyday... she seems to have lunch alone.. but i wrote abby and liza memo some stuff at the coffee shop. had some lunch which was bean sprouts and spinach raw and i ate it with hands and the vegan shake which we need more of at the ashram. WOW I LIVE IN AN ASHRAM LIKE WTFFFF. then went to the tour. then went home. and me and elena talked and i talked about carlo. She asked if he left a note or anything and i said no but i mentioned how he texted a girl that he loved and she made the assumption it was over a girl. I said he put himself under a lot of pressure to do it bc he messaged her that. she asked how, I told her. I told her how i was listening to ELO and it reminded me so much of him and how we both appreciated good composition and were basically the same soul. We are both griefing, she had an abortion and it’s really tough on her. after talking and after i had lunch (which was some of krishnas falafel wrap which was SOOOO good and some vanilla beam yogurt with spinach which was EXTREMELY TASTEFUL and jasmine tea yum and some nachos bc im bad ) u know what i noticed all day today i tried to eat nachos but i ended up eating healthy.. for lunch i was waiting for my nachos to heat up but got bored waiting so i made a salad then for early dinner i was making a small spinach and surprise yummy yogurt snack and then krishna came in and offered some of his delicious falafel and ya that’s an observation.. I’ve been trying to eat better.. let’s dp this.. im trying to save money too.. NO MORE EATING OUT ITS BADb but anyways me and lena had our own fire ceremony and it was intended for our griefing and she held the fire and said let this be to the soul i never met and to allow me to grief or something like that it was so beautiful the way she said it and i said let this be to my favorite soul, and to grief beautifully. and we had such a beautiful great meditation.. i want to do it more with her it was so special. we did it for an hour. concrete jungle i was walking to a coffee shop next to bart and there was some poetry i stopped to look at. I judged a bit. people talking about materialistic experiences and things.. life isn't about any of that.. but im done judging and even talking about judging. went to the coffee shop and wrote beautiful notes to memo for sending me all the amazing gifts. they sent me so much,and to abby and finished my dad’s letter. then worked on my dad’s playlist which took a while but im done! just need to go walk or run to best buy tomorrow i mission to get cds and cd cases for the mixtape and then go to the ashram to burn the cd with a cd burner jack let me borrow then run to the post office and mail it before 5. and i get out of class at 1:25.
