WOEICS upscale status, and a request
The request (plea, to be precise) up top: If you have any recordings (including VHS) of WOEICS off TV, or from Yahooligans! TV, and are willing to send them to me, please get in touch. The reason why below.
So, I realize it's been a year since I upscaled any episodes. Basically my workplace got rid of the computers I'd been using and I've never remembered to start again on the new ones.
The other day, however, I tried installing a newer version of the upscaling software (Topaz AI Video Enhance) on my own computer. The old version didn't work, which is why I did it at work, but by God, the newer version does! So I'm beginning work on upscaling the show again.
I am, however, starting from scratch. I realized that part of why the episodes didn't upscale well is that there's a lot of color noise around the lines. It's present as far back as the Shout! Factory season 1 DVDs, but not on my VHS (the original four releases), nor my off-air recordings of two episodes ("Curses, Foiled Again" and "The Stolen Smile") in syndication. I'm fairly certain that Dic either lost or junked their masters, and that everything from that Shout! release forward - including the Tubi uploads - has been sourced from copies, or copies of copies, which have degraded the picture and made it harder to upscale. Copies from TV broadcasts - Fox, Fox Family, Pax, or syndication - don't seem to have those artifacts, presumably because they were derived from the master. Although they tend to have more flickering noise, that's very easy to remove with Topaz.
So, what I'd like to do is source every episode from off-air recordings, if possible (and if they don't have channel or E/I bugs in the way). If you have any recordings on VHS, or for that matter DVD or via DVR, and you'd be willing to send them to me, please get in touch. I can keep them or send them back, if you wish.
In addition, I know that copies of the show from its time on Yahooligans! TV (a sort of primitive streaming service... iykyk) were circulating online at the time. I'm not sure what the quality of those is, but if you have them, I'd like to have a look.
(This is true even of the episodes I already have. For instance, the original broadcasts of Moondreams on Fox, Fox Family, and Pax had subtitles when the henchpeople speak in Chinese, but the retail release and all subsequent broadcasts don't. My copy of Curses, Foiled Again is cut off at the beginning, and there are weather alerts marring both it and The Stolen Smile - which is the broadcast version with the alternate theme and title card.)
Thanks for reading, and don't forget to stan Ivy.

wait im looking for a site i went to as a kid that was a gundam wing site with a particular chibi art style and was obsessed with hating on relena, i mean obsessed, there were even like choose your own adventure game things with just tons of different methods to gruesomely murder her. but i spent a lot of time on it as a kid. so i wanted to find it. but all i had to go on was the art style. so i've just been looking around various links pages on various gundam wing fansites archived on the wayback machine
and
oh. ohhh that art style. this is fucking it. and i found it by recognizing a 9/11 tribute. there's even an html code you can put on your own website to show your support for the troops
zutto. the torture game that i remember so vividly even got closed down
but i can just go forward in time and find it open again
why did i find this so riveting when i was like 9. i think i had watched 2 episodes of gundam wing when i became obsessed with this. like i barely watched the show but i loved exploring the fan sites. and clicking past the "you must be 18 to enter" warnings. also
i did not remember that this website was all about toast. i did not name myself after this website. i think. to my knowledge. probably.
how did i even find this site. i dont remember how i found websites in 1999. yahooligans?
there's even an adoptables page. i feel like i might have downloaded all the duo chibis and put them on a folder on my windows 98 desktop.
fucking amazing that i was able to find this website with nothing to go on but some vague memories, just by clicking around various gundam wing fansites and their links pages. tbh i think links pages were the best part of old internet sites. i never really figured out what the deal with webrings were, but i remember just going to sites and clicking everything on the links pages one by one and having a great time. content curation without an algorithm.
also. ps. i went to the most recent working capture of their site. which is from 2003. and this incredible bit of 90s bishounen art was there
now THIS is what the y2k era was all about. to me. here's the [link] if anyone's curious but idk why you would be

Skate Punk Sky Jump from the original Yahooligans site! This game was so fun to play growing up and I spent so many hours playing at my local library trying to beat my high score!
Also here's the link to play for yourself! :)

In case anyone wondering Yahooligans rebranded to Yahoo Kids in 2006. There doesn't seem to be an archive of polls or anything so dunno when this was made (if it's real)

Our oldest is currently reading Harry Potter. I have been inspired to dig out my vintage audiobooks. Politics is whatever (not part of this post). Jim Dale’s narration is always a huge comfort; I consider him basically my parent from ages 8 to 16 or so.
But, anyway, for your amusement, here’s what happens when 9-year-old me gets on the proto internet to learn more facts about Harry Potter. (AskJeeves and Yahooligans were big back then. That weird google thing, eh, not sure how long it’s going to last…)
The conversation ensues:
Me: The whole series is backdated. They go under the whopmping willow on my birthday!
My mom: No, it’s not. It takes place in the 2000s.
Me: That’s not actually true—
My mom: The broom is called a Nimbus 2000. The first book takes place in 2000.
Me: Well, I guess they do have a Nimbus 2001 in the second book. That’s The Chamber of Secrets—
My mom: Which is where Fluffy lives, I know. I’ve seen the movie.
Me: It’s not—
My mom: It has to be. Hogwarts can’t have that many secret chambers.
Me: … (Ron says practically this exact same line in CoS). Well, it has at least 2.

FYI, I come to this site in cycles, so there are huge swaths of time where I'm inactive, then I bing-post/bing-reblog over short periods. That's why I may look/feel like, "liminal space" weird.
Hahaha... binge*. I meant binge, y'all. Yahooligans can calm down frfr before this even starts up, lol

i think i may have typed something like "how to read the odyssey" into yahooligans
but to be fair, yahooligans worked better than google does these days
i dont remember why i did this, maybe someone described it and it sounded cool or something, but when i was in like first grade i found the odyssey on project gutenberg and read it. and then liked it so much i read it two more times. and i never forgot the true lesson of that experience: you can read old books for free online
