what is your fave fic to receive comments/messages on?

i still love getting comments on this fic. it's been almost a year since it's been posted, and i really need to go in and fix it some things in it, but some of the comments on that fic just make me <3333 it was only my third or fourth ever fic and only my second one for the stranger things fandom, and it just like, makes my heart happy that other people related to it.

It said give or take, okay? So 11 is fine... This was literally so hard. You have no idea. If you wanted me to list 10 shows or fandoms, it would be easy, but characters? It's so much harder. Who do I pick? Who do I leave out? I tried to think of characters who are near and dear to my heart. Who either have deeply influenced me my whole entire life or played a big part in it or whom I just love deeply and wholly. It was so hard to pick Yu-Gi-Oh! characters and Winx Club characters especially. I also deeply and seriously considered adding Carrie Bradshaw into the list and I could not leave Xie Lian out so he is 11.

I'm going to define the past year as May 2019 to May 2020. I took a break from fandom and creating for a while and only really came back in late 2019 so to pick five works I'm going to have to pull from all the fandoms I'm currently writing for. (All three of them. :D)

In no particular order, here are five of my favorite works from the past year:

1. Disruption (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3) - Cabin Pressure

This is a fun Mallory/Cat story set in a baseball AU in which Cat and Mallory play on the same baseball team, managed by Carolyn. I'm still hoping to write more of this because I have more outlined in my head but these were really fun to write.

2. Final Boarding Call - Cabin Pressure

This is a Charlie/Miles drabble that I wrote during the Five Years of Zurich event. (Five years!) I really like how the drabble turned out and I'm so glad that I started writing Cabin Pressure things again for the event.

3. The Smell of Fear (on LiveJournal) - Merlin

Switching fandoms, this is a Gwaine/Leon Hogwarts AU that I wrote for the Camelot Drabble community on LiveJournal. This prompt was in October so I decided to go a little darker than usual and I'm really happy with the result.

4. Death Will Set You Free (on AO3) - Merlin

This is another Gwaine/Leon story written for the Camelot Drabble community. (This community's weekly prompts have been a very helpful writing routine.) This is set in the canon era and, coincidentally, also a bit dire. I write happy Merlin fic too, I promise.

5. We'll Start a War Worth Fighting For (on AO3) - Daiya no Ace | Ace of Diamond

New fandom! Daiya no Ace is an anime about a high school baseball team which I've recently fallen for, and fallen hard. The first thing I wrote for this fandom is this Tetsu/Jun science fiction battle mecha AU. It sounds weird but I loved writing it and I really hope I'm able to write more.

A preposition? Again? 😂😂 Still from my hot-tub wip, I couldn’t decide between two sentences so here they are:

“He looked at her, dark and burning gaze under heavy lashes, and she shook her head, mesmerized, unable to even speak, her tongue seeming to have developed its own conscience and wandering over her bottom lip, out of her control”

You guys?? I now have 100 works posted to AO3 for Humans alone… apparently this is how I’ve chosen to spend my twenties, and I regret absolutely nothing 😂

There are 405 tagged fics for the show, meaning that I account for close to a quarter of them. Can I put that on my CV? Is that a thing?

Anyway, to mark this utter non-event, here is a shameless “top 10” of fics that I especially enjoyed writing, in order of publication…

1. Away (future-fic Leotilda, my first stand-alone)

2. In Touch (1-2 hiatus fic, the longest thing I’ve ever written, incomplete but not technically abandoned yet)

3. a shred of comfort (collection of 3 drabbles from the first Humans fanwork challenge. The middle one, about Fred, is for some reason one of my all-time favourites)

4. the last thing we lose (Laura & Astrid talk after the trial)

5. probability (a one-shot that’s all that’s left of a grand AU dream I once had, in which Mattie knew Leo before his accident)

6. a sailor’s heart is never run aground (I love this silly pirate AU that isn’t even a pirate AU)

7. staring at the end (Joe and Laura talk after s2)

8. on top of things (Max helps Mia come to terms with Ed’s betrayal. I haven’t even reread this to see it it fits with s3 canon…)

9. Call Her (prediction fic for Mia and Niska’s s3 conversation)

10. no more warmth, now she’s not home (Max struggles to cope with a Post-Flash world)

HUMANS FANDOM MEETUP

To celebrate, why don’t we follow the good old tumblr tradition and hold a fandom meetup?

All you have to do to participate is make a post saying hi - include a selfie if you like, talk about why you love the show and who your favourite character/OTP is… or anything else you want! Then we can all reblog each others’ posts around and feel like a li’l community.

We might not be a big fandom but I’m sure we can make some noise for the show’s anniversary. Maybe we’ll even suck some new fans in by the sheer volume of reblogs! Anything’s possible.

Everyone: Hello Rochelle.

I could write a 100 page thesis paper on why I love Humans and probably still have more to say. I mean, obviously I’ll start with the show itself. Watching it is less like looking at less of  a narrative and more of a portrait study in humanity. Hence the title, I suppose. I cherish the things that surprise me, and this includes not only the plot twists, but the way characters change and evolve. I started watching this show out of fascination with the parallel universe - and Colin Morgan, but we can get to him later - and couldn’t really like any of the main human characters. Laura? Too shrill and secretive. Mattie? A cliche disconnected teenage girl.

And I couldn’t forgive Leo for either his overall surliness or his grungy coat.

Cut to mid-season, when I am absolutely championing both Laura and Mattie. I want to make Niska my own sister, and Fred my brother.

Meanwhile, Leo is still Colin Morgan. I saw something special about his acting back in Merlin. He can inflict both feels and hilarity with a single line. He can shift his characters’ projection in either the smallest or most obvious ways.

His slow-burn chemistry with Lucy Carless (Mattie) is off the freaking charts. I mean, I love all my ships, but this one is legendary fanfic fodder. Overburdened, untrusting boy meets overburdened, untrusting girl....her strong moral compass heals him, while his anti-social demeanor fascinates and draws her in. At least, that’s how I view them. Which is why I and (maybe) others can’t seem to stop writing about them.

I guess that takes me to another thing I love about the show: the fandom.I have never met so many fic writers for one show. I used to write by myself on a lonely Wordpress blog, now there’s AO3?! And Tumblr?!! I have met so many amazing people - too many to give a shoutout to. And I haven’t noticed any real negative energy among us, at least not for a few years.

Well, that’s me, I guess. Just a heads up in case people aren’t aware, my username on AO3 is Be_The_Spark. My most notable ongoing tale is The Red and Blue Circuit series, which may get a third installment after I finish the second one. I also wrote The Diary of Mattie Hawkins before anything, which has also has a podfic made by the lovely merlins-earmuffs/bravenclawesome.
