Blog #1: Sijourner Truth’s ‘Ain’t I a Woman?’
Sijourner Truth presented her speech ‘Ain’t I a Woman?’ at the Women’s Rights Convention in Akron, Ohio in 1881. This was during a time where females, especially those of colour, were subject to much discrimination and prejudice against the power of men. Truth speaks specifically about the inequalities faced by other female African American slaves, but also about the general suffering faced by females during this time period.
One thing Truth does really well is building a connection to her audience in order to strengthen her message. In terms of diction and rhetoric, she specifically uses informal speech and slang in many instances. One such example is the constantly repeated phrase, ’And ain’t I a woman?’. She recognizes that her audience of predominately African American female slaves will feel more connected to her message when she speaks in a manner they are used to, rather than utilizing more formal diction.
Furthermore, I noticed her technique of utilizing very obvious statements and general logic in order to get a point across. The blatant obviousness of the statement ‘Ain’t I a woman?’ makes one question the absurdity of the entire issue at hand. Similarly, a phrase that stuck out for me was when she asks, ‘If my cup won’t hold but a pint, and yours holds a quart, wouldn’t you be mean not to let me have my little half measure full?’. Truth makes the point that if men already have more rights than women, is it not fair to simply ask not even to level the playing field, but to gain some independence?
