So.

In my Hadestown AU, Oliver and Mike take the roles of Hades and Persephone and Jon and Martin take the roles of Orpheus and Eurydice.

First on Hades and Persephone-

Oliver Banks is Hades. A man shrouded and suffocated by death who finds respite pre-Change in the open, carefree Mike Crew.

But then Mike dies. And the Change happens.

Now in charge of his own domain, Oliver harnesses his newfound power to reanimate Mike. But he can't take his boyfriend from his entity entirely. It works out as Mike being able to spend half of his time above ground and the other half down in the Corpse Roots, reliving his death - suffocated and alone - again and again. In time, he turns bitter to his situation and his boyfriend.

Oliver, now unable to escape the tendrils that has always taunted him and without the comfort of his boyfriend for half of the year, starts to change. He lets his domain absorb him into a cocktail of apathy and grief and he's so far lost from hope that he's forgotten the feeling.

Now onto Orpheus and Eurydice.

In this AU, Martin is a full Lonely avatar and only meets Jon post-Change.

Jonathan Sims - a lone wanderer and avatar of the eye - is travelling the hellscapes. Filling himself with knowledge and power in hopes that he will one day be powerful enough to bring the world back into tune.

It is on this pilgrimage he meets Martin Blackwood. He shows Martin ideals of a world full of people and happiness and love - if only Jon can learn enough to reach it again. Martin believes him, but soon discovers Jon may not have the capabilities he's promised as the wind gets louder and colder around him.

Frustrated with his difficult, grieving boyfriend, Oliver reaches out to Martin and offers him the peace that comes with a life in the End's domain. As in the Orpheus and Eurydice myth, this leads to Jon following Martin deeper down into Oliver's domain.

The final climax comes when Jon pulls suppressed memories out of Oliver's head - memories of a happiness and love he'd long since forgotten post-Change. This ammends his relationship with Mike, but unfortunately for Jon and Martin, Oliver's terms for their escape from his domain give them an ending not quite so happy.

I've been sitting on this one a while, but I was listening to The Raven King the other day and one of the scenes was when Adam mentioned his extracurricular activities, weights and the scientific method. And I had an epiphany. Ronan dreams a truth serum (funny, because he never lies), and Adam uses what he's learned in his scientific method extracurricular to figure out what it is.

Warning: Here are exactly 500 really damn dumb words.

Observation: Ronan Lynch, a dreamer, awoke the morning of Saturday, March 23rd, 2013, with a corked, glass bottle of an unknown, blue substance that is creepily close to the color of the researcher’s eyes. The bottle is labeled only VERITAS. 

Question: What is the unknown substance? 

Hypothesis: The unknown substance is a truth serum, which the researcher considers mildly amusing and vaguely concerning given Mr. Lynch’s prior claims that he never lies and the researcher has given him no reason to believe the researcher has lied to him.

Prediction: If the unknown substance is orally administered to Mr. Lynch, the researcher will be able to ascertain the nature of the substance by interviewing Mr. Lynch and asking a series of questions based on statements Mr. Lynch has made in written, dated communications. If Mr. Lynch’s responses contradict prior statements, it will be assumed that the unknown substance is a truth serum and Mr. Lynch is a liar. 

Experiment: After assembling the aforementioned communications, the researcher instructed Mr. Lynch to consume “a few drops” of the unknown substance, given its unknown duration and side effects. Mr. Lynch ignored instructions and consumed the entire bottle, claiming, “It's not gonna kill me. I dreamt it.” The researcher was not impressed.

RL: Yes, Parrish. Even though the note I left reads Dinner. Barns. 9:00 PM. 

AP: So that was a lie? 

RL: Not a lie. A ruse.

AP: You succeeded. 

RL: You liked it. 

AP: I have no comment. Next question: What’s your opinion of my ass?

RL: What ass? You don’t have one.

AP: This contradicts an email dated March 18th. You wrote, Jesus shit, your ass, followed by three flame emojis. For the record, this was sent to my Aglionby email during my study period. 

RL: I’ve sent worse through their firewall. 

AP: […]

AP: […] So you don’t like my ass?

RL: No. I love your ass. 

AP: Contrary to your previous statement. 

RL: That’s my opinion of your ass. Ask the right questions.

Podcast Promotion + Behind-The-Scenes

Hey there everybody! I just made a post on my personal blog @cryptid-dragon about the super cool TTRPG podcast that my group of friends and I have been producing! I also wanted to share some behind-the-scenes tidbits/backstory for anyone who was interested, but figured that my TTRPG-specific blog would be the better place to share that stuff.

Long story short: The podcast is called Rolls of Fate, you can find us here on Tumblr @rollsoffate, as well as on Youtube and on Spotify and probably wherever else you usually check your favorite TTRPG podcasts out on! Please check us out, we have two episodes out so far (An introductory Episode 0 as well as an Episode 1) and it would just mean the world to me if our podcast got a bit more of a following.

Our group consists of the following members: @lindseysdede​ as GM, @cryptid-dragon​ (me!) as Briar Valentine, @likilikiwoohoo​ as Evie Castle, @mintomato as Iris, @allftgame​ as Moss Curtis (First appearance: Episode 1), and @clovercanada as a character who I can’t name yet because said character doesn’t come in until like... Episode 20. Which I explain more later in the post.

And now... for the meat of this post... the behind-the-scenes info:

For almost a year now (it’ll be a full year this Sunday, actually) my friends and I have been recording a game of Monster of the Week (a TTRPG our GM and I first discovered through TAZ: Amnesty) to turn into a podcast, and a couple weeks ago our Episode 0 went live. Last Saturday, our Episode 1 went live. And a week from tomorrow, our Episode 2 will go live. We’re posting on a biweekly schedule.

This project has meant a LOT to me for the past year, and it’s been one hell of a journey. It took a couple months before we were even sure we could go through with the project, due to the several things:

1) we lost all of our GM’s audio for the very first session, which we feared would make it unusable until we realized we could just make a recap episode that salvaged some of the player audio.

2) we actually had another member who was going to be a part of the group, and she played for the first two sessions before leaving and deciding she did not want her voice or character to be included. At all. And to respect her wishes, we had to edit around her and her character, which while difficult ended up proving possible.

Because of these things, Episode 0 is a bit of a recap of our first two sessions, and unlike the rest of the episodes where I have been the main editor for it, our GM actually took it as her own personal project, since she had to script and record narration to help explain things that would have been missing (though due to having to ret-con an entire character out of existence, some small plot-holes and awkward lines remained. We did our best lol)

Episode 1 is also out, and it is in the style that the rest of the episodes will be in.

A little bit more behind-the-scenes that I can give as both the Editor and Illustrator for the podcast: As-is right now, I am currently about halfway through editing the 18th Episode of the podcast, though I had to stop and go back to remaster some of the older episodes. I needed to update some of the illustrations I just wasn’t as happy with anymore, as well as clean up the earlier episodes audio to the standards I was going for now.

When i first started, my editing skills were pretty rusty and I was getting a hang of the program again, so there were a lot of things I needed to clean up when I went back and redid them, but I’m so happy that I did. The episodes are much more polished now, and I’d like to think that it makes it easier for our GM to do her work finalizing the episodes (she does the final touches in the editing, including cleaning up any errors that slip by me as well as creating/adding music and other sound affects to the episode)

The reason that I know our latest player to join the group comes in around Episode 20 is because every session we record makes for roughly 2 episodes, and I know I’m working on the last session recording before he officially joined the game.

And I believe that’s everything I can share without giving any spoilers! I’ll likely be posting about the podcast a bit here when I can, as well as reblogging the episodes like I already have been.
