BUT ALSO the 'Sea' is very well an objective reality, it might even basically be the 'Nexus' through which all Soulsborne universes sorta connect! Even Elden Ring is hinting at this, with those who "failed" to truly die becoming Jellyfish spirits and Godwyn becoming marine creature in his soulless body, and Tibia Mariners! And Fishing Hamlet priest saying that all great things come from the Sea and come back to it, and there probably being a good reason for why Kos was washed to the shore, and Research Hall patients confirming that contents of the Sea were too terrifying and maddening for mere humans!

So basically, yeah, maybe very well it was time for the world to "return" to the Sea. Biblical flood reference... Fresh start for the world. However, the Sea has since been corrupted, and it WAS the filth within humanity, waste from endless burning, that polluted the Sea to the point where, apparently, "returning" to it would be a fate worse than death!

Aldrich not only was mad enough to take it quite well (Micolash and Adeline approve fshhdfs), but also decided to take everyone with him kinda like Noah's Arc while adapting himself and them into something capable of living in the Deep Sea. Thriving in the horrors, even. (Adeline of the Deep when dshfhfdgfdsd)

Like I keep saying and ya'll don't listen to me that he was on some next level, and way cooler than that OOOOOOTHER big cannibal character that intended to devour the Gods and lost his objective like a looser! 2017.10.11 Kansu Domino Review!

It’s been SUCH a long time since I’ve seen either IkeP or Seto in the flesh and on stage (Ike’s last was that disappointed called DANSUI, and Seto’s was the partially interesting Kanbotsu), and this play was getting a lot of good reviews and my friend who’s a Seto fan was keeping track of it all and said it looked good.

STORY

A rather strange car accident occurs. There was no traffic light next to the pedestrian crossing that Tamiya (Ikeoka) was next to. A car came flying around the corner and into a curb. But it stopped centimeters away from Tamiya; both Tamiya and the driver Arata (Suzuki) are either with no injury or small injuries. The person in the passenger seat however, Arata's wife, is in critical condition. Witnesses were Makabe (Seto), Akiyama (Kojima) and Samon (Emoto). It is now up to the insurance company to determine and find out what really happened when Makabe suggests Samon had created an invisible wall with his mind to stop the car from hitting his best friend Tamiya, which leads them to investigate under that hypothesis with the help from recently HIV positive confirmed victim Toro (Yamada).

NON-SPOILER REVIEW Overall: I was very surprised when the story decided to take a supernatural route. I was expecting it to be like the dorama Galileo where it’s could be explained completely with real science. But I was down for the whole ‘invisible wall’ supernaturalness but wasn’t what I expected. This stage was good; it was a solid story and a solid stage, the performances were as expected. But there was nothing...special about it nor was there any twist or anything amazing to it. They’re all very well establish actors and they all performed as expected and accordingly. The story is actual rather slow moving too; a lot of just simple talking in a room among themselves so I spent quite a lot of time with my eyes closed because they didn’t visually need my attention. But the scenes where it got real crazy or there was fighting or there was something happening, I was very much ears AND eyes focused. It’s a good stage. Just nothing... wow-factor. We all know how I feel about predictability. Rating: 7/10

SPOILER REVIEW

PreShow

I’m going to be totally honest, the moment I saw Naya freaking Takeru walk through the door, I mentally flipped my shit and fell out my seat (mentally). Me and Naya keep going to the same things on the same days - just like me and Shiramata xD he tried so hard to not look obvious; he was really shy and timid looking. But he has great style; I notice his signature jock-jackets anywhere! His fashion sense is so good! I always want his damn clothes xD anyway, so I saw him and I literally spent quite a bit of time flicking over to him >.<

Mikami was there too, along with Koudou Shouri from PATCH -- wait... why didn’t Shouri and Takeru sit together? ALSO why did Takeru clearly have a ticket and a set seat like a normal audience member, but Shouri changed his seat about three times because the staff were shuffling him and Mikami around... wtf?! That’s weird thinking back... did Mikami get in free cos he’s a D-Boys and his plus one was Shouri so they didn’t have a set seat cos they didn’t have to pay, but Naya had to fork out for a ticket?! Oh my if that’s true.... it’d make sense though, because one time Shuuto (Miyazaki) came to As You Like It and he literally got the most back seat available... unless they decided to come at the very last second so they paid but staff are like ‘whatever seat is available’.

Anyway, enough kangeki conspiracy theories and the weirdest that is WE Entertainment.

TO THE SHOW!

So the play ends up being about someone with supernatural powers and it’s called Domino because the powers only stay with one person temporarily until they pass on to another and this power can literally do anything if you will and want it enough. And that it what happens.

Like I said above, it surprised me that this ended up being more mysterious and supernatural and magic than I was expecting; BUT I’m glad they kind of throw that theme out there within the first 15 minutes or so.

I really like the set up; we started with some random characters here and there and then eventually they all came together. The biggest mystery I had was Yamada’s character; I didn’t realise for a while that he was working for Seto until he was in the same room with Seto. But I love how his character genuinely ended up liking Tamiya and co. so wanted to get away from Seto who was clearly messed up mentally and was giving off toxic vibes the entire time.

Seto did just as I expected; amazing, flawless acting. He really put himself into this character. He looked absolutely exhausted by the time the stage finished and I think it’s easy to see how mentally exhausting his character is.

His character is an oddball. He’s seeing a doctor/therapist who is also his mother(?) but I cannot remember why he’s going.. at first when he suggests the invisible wall, he just says it rather off-handishly but thinks it’s interesting enough to investigate; but then you see he’s forced Yamada to install cameras and listening devices into this innocent person’s house (Samon) and he’s forcing Yamada to lie to a group he’s genuinely become friends with. And then Seto starts to get very controlling and possessive like he’s the leader of the group, even overpowering the insurance investigator(!). And we lead to the climax which is; turns out Seto is the Domino and was all along; it was him that created the invisible wall, it was him who ends up curing Yamada of HIV, it’s him that willed Tamiya to have unrequited love from Oono who ends up falling for Samon. This is one massive plot that he wanted to happen and therefore did happen. Which leads him to lose control of his power a little at the end by smashing a few lights and almost(?) killing Akiyama in a rage, and being unable to fix her so he mentally breaks down hard on stage.

I really wish they hadn’t made it so much ‘SETO IS THE MAIN CHARACTER’ even down to the poster, because it just made it completely predictable and obvious that he was gunna be the Domino. So I wasn’t shocked when literally RIGHT at the end they all learn and realise it’s him. It kind of took away from Seto having his breakdown; would’ve been more impactful if we had all gone through the breakdown together with the character at the end.

It was a really interesting play as you can clearly read above, BUT a lot of it is just talking in a room about what they should do and how they should prove that Samon is the Domino - who made the wall in order to save his friend Tamiya during the crash - so I didn’t miss anything by having my eyes closed most of the time because the main acting and information was coming through their voices.

AND! The scenes that did have action or something happening, I was totally absorbed in it! For example, there’s at least two great scenes with Zukki who is just desperate for the Domino to be revealed and to use the Domino to heal his wife as she’s pretty much in a coma and heavily injured, one time is when he approaches Samon on the street one day and starts calm like ‘will you come see my wife?’ and of course Samon is like ‘....why? Why me?’ but Zukki quickly cracks and tries to drag him but luckily Yamada turns up in time and pushes Zukki away; unfortunately this reveals to Samon and Tamiya that Yamada knows Zukki. Another point is when they’re watching the video of Samon and co but none of them will make a move and obviously this pisses him off - he wants his wife saved NOW. He did great being this depressed and easily-angered character. The end scene is very good too! The last 10/15 minutes are very action packed when Seto’s having his breakdown.

Emoto is an actor who I’ve always enjoyed and he did well in this too. He was playing a writer who know one knew his face. And I really enjoyed Zukki and Yamada’s scene together. And Yamada just being a HIV character in this was great and the character talks about his struggles and when he begs Samon to wish for him to be cured and how Samon doesn’t freak out when he learns Yamada has HIV. The way they dealt with the HIV was very well done. No one ran for the hills when he told them (except Zukki); everyone was really accepting and that ‘it’s no longer a life sentence’ etc which was really nice -- especially in Japan where most diseases are very hushush and shunned.

Unfortunately, Ikeoka didn’t get nearly as much exposure onstage as I would’ve wanted/liked BUT it was refreshing to see him play a character who didn’t have any comedy in him. It was nice seeing him play completely serious for once and he did it really well! I just wish he got a hell of a lot more work because I personally feel he deserves it. Hopefully this stage gives him that exposure to managers and casting directors etc.

Finally:

They filmed the day I went, but don’t think it’ll be used, as someone’s phone went off literally 4 mins into the damn play -__-

After the Show

Naya was adorable! He tried so hard to sneak out. And then when I left, he was right at the entrance which a manager, so I ‘casually’ walked right past him and right in front of him. But to be honest, he wasn’t the one having the problem of sticking out; I was! Everyone was looking at me; either cos I’m white or cos of how tired I may have looked(?). But even the shit ton of kankeishas were pausing to look at me *sweats*. It’s been a while since I’ve had this much gaijin pressure on me...

But anyway, yes Naya! ADORABLE! And I want his jacket! xD

Charley is an only child…… Ridley and Quentin have sibling(s)……….. Quentin has an older sister who doesn’t live at home anymore. Yes. They have a good relationship.

Charley likes to cook. His father taught him and after high school he basically wants to go work at his dad’s seafood restaurant on the coast of Mexico. His mother is Mexican and that’s where the two of them met, dated and got engaged. It’s super-corny so I may change it but basically his mom realized that his dad was in love with the ocean and with the merfolk lifestyle and Mexican culture, more than he was with her. So she split and raised their son inland. This happened when Charley was five or six years old so all his memories of Mexico are happy early childhood memories of playing and swimming in the ocean. He tends to kind of idealize the coast for this reason. Charley is still in contact with his dad via phone and letters and email. I haven’t decided yet if he flies out to see him or not.

Can’t decide if Quentin’s heritage is African or Afro-Caribbean I know one of Ridley’s parents should be an oni but idk about the other one. I should look up demons from different places, esp Asia and Europe

Quentin is super-interested in biochemistry and alchemial magic and wants to get into a good university to study it. He wants to research the effects and applications of botanoalchemy and his ultimate goal is to improve the lives of impoverished people with new scientific breakthroughs. His family is largely supportive but his grandmother disapproves of scientific study of magic

Ridley doesn’t know what the fuck they want to do after high school, they want to take a gap year and/or work… somewhere? Sometimes they feel inadequate compared to Quentin. wtf these pronouns don’t feel right? Maybe Ridley is a demiguy/trans man. Sometimes he feels inadequate compared to Quentin. Season 1, Episode 4

I channeled En for about a week and was too lazy to quit playing Resident Evil and finish this liveblog buuuut better late than never, right?! I may only manage one of these a week but I just had a bunch of fanfic ideas (unrelated to watching the episode) so I figured I’d press onward and finish these. Mostly cuz I’m really interested in getting to season 2 because the Beppus are my favorite. But for now- IT’S THE EPISODE WHERE THEY GET BABYFIED! OMG CUTENESS ABOUND.

And we end on Atsushi reminiscing about Kinshirou and their stargazing adventures but THIS BOTHERS ME BECAUSE OF COURSE YOU FUCKING KNOW WHAT HE WISHED FOR YOU DIP. Context wise, it’s obvious Kinshirou told him. I mean, he might be meaning he’s since forgotten the wish (which would explain his falling out with Kinshirou in another dimension other than the curry thing) but showing that flashback in such detail and then having Atsushi remember it (or hinted that he remembers it) but without hinting that he knows what Kinshirou wished for is just kind of.... idk it bothers me. That line wasn’t 100% necessary, or perhaps it could have been something like “I don’t remember what he wished for”. Of course, for all I know he could have said that but crunchyroll could have translated it poorly idk.

Buuuut that’s the end! That was mostly just an enjoyable “aww” episode with not a lot of substance other than we discover that Kinshirou is dramatic AF, En is self conscious (perhaps even moreso than Atsushi, or possibly just vain) and Io is definitely embarrassed by public nudity. Hm. Maybe you guys have some more intelligent commentary.

I’m gonna shoot to get Ep 5 done in the next couple days (maybe hours... but this shit takes forever) because I want to finish compiling all this stuff so I can get to writing these plot bunnies that just bit me in the ass... buuuut I need research. Man... En the lazy is definitely my spirit animal OTL

Just watched the Da Yu Hai Tang movie.

Thoughts:

Warning for spoilers. The TLDR at the end is spoiler free.

It was certainely a journey. If nothing else, the visuals were absolutely stunning, I can not understate that. This was an extremely beautiful movie. 

The Ghibli and Miyazaki influences were pretty blatant, but I felt the movie had enough of it’s own style that it wasn’t too egregious. Especially in the latter half of the movie.

As far as story goes, there were good parts and not so good parts. 

Good parts were mainly the parts where she bonded with Kun, the aspects about dealing with grief and the death of loved ones, and the whole “you dun fucked up MC” scene where she sees the two crying sisters as the same and realizes how she’d endangered other people and almost caused more death in her quest to undo it. I’m also a sucker for one-sided love where the un-reciprocated person cares more about the person they love than about being with them So I liked how Qiun’s story ended. Though I couldn’t help but laugh at the scene where she tells him he’s like a brother to her. It was just so blunt and followed right after he waxed so poetically about her. You could just pinpoint the moment his heart broke. He still sent her topside anyways though so gotta give him that. Sacrificing youself so that the woman you love can be with the fish she loves is worthy of respect in my book.

The bad parts... Man, the story is just all over the place. They have a lot of random scenes and characters that aren’t really needed, and some things seem to happen randomly without any explanation or resolution. WTF was with that rat lady? Seriously what the fuck? Everything about her was random, vague, and unexplained. Was she supposed to be sequel bait? I seriously don’t get her character at all. There was also that random dream sequence, and the snake fight as well. 

But my biggest issue was with the sacrifice scene. When Chun sacrificed herself to save everyone and then was instantly brought back it felt very cheap. I think a better way of playing that scenario out would be to keep the grandfather alive and have him be the one to sacrifice himself instead, without being brought back. Then you’d have both the scene with her grieving over his death and the scene with someone sacrificing themself to save the spirit world, and you could allot the extra time to showcasing her relationship with her grandfather, which would give his death more impact. Then you get the strengths of both scenes together, without the weaknesses.

And as I mentioned I liked that Chun was forced to see how her brash decision had affected others. As much as the audience is rooting for her and Kun, I liked that she wasn’t entirely in the right either, that bringing back someone from the dead had serious consequences. But when she sacrificed herself to save everyone and then still got to live it kind of pulled the rug out from under that message. Instead she was more of a savior/messiah type character rather than a teenager who’d made a big mistake while trying to do the right thing. If her grandfather had been the one to sacrifice himself it would have still been a consequence of her action. Instead she got off mostly scott-free. Qiu’s sacrifice didn’t feel like enough of a consequence on his own since he made his own decision to give up his life to send her to the human world, and he still lived on in some form as seen after the credits.

Overall I feel like the story could have a bit more cohesive. The animation was very good considering the studio doesn’t seem to have any major film productions under its belt. Though the studio that animated both Avatar series would certainely be no slouch. They did showcase a few of their usual weaknesses. The animation on the “fish” (those were porpoises tho) was good, but the animation on other background animals could a bit hit and miss. The horses at the beginning were a little awkward especially. There was a bit of stiffness at some points, and the 3d panning shots didn’t always work. They also had a few cases of bland face and lazy eyes, and didn’t show the range of expressions that you see in their other works like Avatar or Voltron. But those were mainly in the beginning. The majority of the animation was great, especially the second half of the movie where they got to showcase their skill at animating water and fire.

Spoiler free TLDR: In the end I liked it, but mostly for the visuals and animation. The story wasn’t horrible, and it wasn’t great either, but boy was this movie something to look at. I recommend watching it just for the aesthetic if nothing else.
