“[A] sharply observed study . . . richly detailed portraits.”― Economist Somini Sengupta emigrated from Calcutta to California as a young child in 1975. Returning thirty years later as the bureau chief for The New York Times , she found a vastly different country: one defined as much by aspiration and possibility―at least by the illusion of possibility―as it is by the structures of sex and caste. The End of Karma is an exploration of this new India through the lens of young people from different worlds: a woman who becomes a Maoist rebel; a brother charged for the murder of his sister, who had married the “wrong” man; a woman who opposes her family and hopes to become a police officer. Driven by aspiration―and thwarted at every step by state and society―they are making new demands on India’s democracy for equality of opportunity, dignity for girls, and civil liberties. Sengupta spotlights these stories of ordinary men and women, weaving together a groundbreaking portrait of a country in turmoil. 10 illustrations
I had the great fortune of hearing Sengupta talk as part of a promotional tour for this book. The statistics she quoted in her talk blew my mind. 1 million Indians turn 18 every month. The government has to find jobs for all the new adults and make sure they are adequately trained for these jobs. I remember walking away from the talk stressed and anxious wondering what India is going to do and how this generation (to which I belong) is going to end up. The book manages to convey exactly the same sense of urgency that I felt that day. The spin on aspiration and destiny and the focus on the youth of India is inspired. It's a great way to tell the story of India's legacy and India's future.
I was a little skeptical of the format- stories that are interwoven with hard facts and figures- of this book. Every time someone has attempted to convey a sense of India through a story or even a handful of stories, the result has backfired in my opinion. As Sengupta herself says, 7 stories can never be representative of any country, least of all India. But as "marginal" as these stories are (her words, not mine), they are extremely illuminating. Let's be honest, I grew up amongst these stories. But as Sengupta so beautifully puts it, in India you learn to see distress and yet not see distress. These stories are beautiful portraits of the lives of people who usually only appear in my world as statistics or news articles peripheral characters at most and do a great deal to get the reader personally invested.
This is an excellent book to read if you want to know more about India whether you are Indian or not and whether you live in the country or not. If you're not Indian, this is one of the most nuanced descriptions of life in India. If you're Indian, chances are, you (like me) haven't looked too deeply into the lives of these people who aren't in your social strata or in your state/region of the country. And chances are you will gain some perspective into the world's most unlikely democracy.

So You Want To Be 'Exceptional', Eh?
We’ve all heard the term ‘American Exceptionalism’, one which causes me to shake my head and roll my eyes.  It ties in with the ultra-discriminatory ‘America First’ ideology and other supremacy notions and has no place in this world.  But, it turns out there is one area in which we are ‘exceptional’ … we, particularly the wealthy in this nation, contribute more per capita to the destruction of…

ivy's best friends
Tumblr media
somi !
˗ˏˋ contact name. somi girl 🫶🏻 ; ollie bby 🥰
˗ˏˋ nicknames. somsom, somini, soomi ; ollie, livvy, livia o
……❪ these two were together through literally everything. from jyp trainees, to ioi members, to leaving jyp, they've seen it all. the two of them still have a very strong and healthy friendship, they're practically a married couple at this point let's be real. they are the founders and ceo's of 01' line, they recruited everyone. ❫
……❪ they support each other for everything, if you tell ivy that something was wrong with somi she would drop everything and rush to her before you can even finish your sentence. and somi would do the same. they've been through so much together that it's nearly impossible for them to not be so close. they were both extremely young going into produce and ioi, that stress of being an idol at such a young age bonded them for life. ❫
……❪ they have a very funny relationship, they flirt a lot but in the friendship kind of way. where it's like you confuse everyone around you but you're cracking up about it. they also do so much together, they schedule dates at least two months in advanced because of their idol schedules. and then once they are together you can't separate them. they're poor managers. ❫
Tumblr media
libby !
˗ˏˋ contact name. ellie bby 💜 ; poison ivy 🩷
˗ˏˋ nicknames. libs, ellie, elle, macbeth ; livvy baby, liv, chu, olive oil
……❪ the two were trainees at jyp together for a short period of time. and during that time, chan practically pushed them to talk together. the two bonded over their love and training for professional dance and their lives. they are kind of known as 'introverted chaos' by their members and fans. they can be yelling and goofing off one moments, but they need someone else to order their food ❫
……❪ libby is the type of person to be rational, she thinks from her brain more than her heart. and ivy... is the opposite. to put it short, libby - 'let's think about this...' ivy - 'fuck it we ball.' but even though libby likes to think rationally, she would do anything for/with olivia. they are the kind of friends to kill for each other, and god if you insult one or the other... if a glarealone could kill you'd be dead in two seconds. ❫
……❪ forget the black cat and golden retriever duo, they are both golden retrievers. it’s like dumb and dumber. whenever they’re together it’s like 2 year olds on a play date. but they can both be kinda snarky. though it’s rare, they can both be seen with rbf’s, until they turn to look at each other and bust out laughing. just pray for their leaders and move on, you don’t wanna be caught in the tornado. ❫
Tumblr media
conan !
 ˗ˏˋ contact name. conan😎 ; ivy😎
˗ˏˋ nicknames. cone, conie ; iv, liv
……❪ these two met thanks to their fans. conan found a video of her covering his song because fans flooded his comments asking him to watch it. when he heard her singing he became a fan so fast, not even knowing that she was a fan herself. he immediately found a way to reach out to her the two eventually got to meet in 2022 backstage of ateez's concert. ❫
……❪ conan will do anything for ivy. there's so many videos of him standing up for not only her but all of ateez. he honestly gets so upset when people hate on his friends, and he knows it's something that comes with their livelihood, but it sucks. ivy has expressed her gratitude toward conan and is constantly talking about him. ❫
……❪ they are so fun together. the amount of pictures and videos of their facetime calls makes fans so happy, their interactions together are amazing. the two of them bonded fairly quickly due to their similarities within their childhood and now adulthood as well. they are always joking with each other and even have inside jokes that confuses their fans. ❫
Tumblr media
bangchan !
˗ˏˋ contact name. skz father ; olivia min
˗ˏˋ nicknames. christy, christmas, nacho ; olive branch, liv,
……❪ met at jyp and he really became like a mentor to her. he helped her and supported her through everything, and even told her to leave jyp if it felt right to her. he made sure she didn’t listen to anytime but herself and made sure she was protected in the industry for as long as he could. fans didn’t know how close the two were until they showed up on kingdom and both mentioned their love for each other as brother and sister ❫
……❪ he would do anything for her honestly. she sucked at making friends back then because she was so shy, so when it came to making friends he pushed her to talk to the now itzy members, somi, libby, his members, hell even actual idols like twice and got7. he didn’t care if jyp didn’t want her socializing too much, chan wanted olivia to have friends! ❫
……❪ he was and kind of still is extremely protective over her. it’s easily seen that he really cares for every person around him and ivy is of no exception. aside from the seriousness of the friendship, ivy isn’t scared to tease him. ❫
Tumblr media
olivia !
 ˗ˏˋ contact name. chanel #2 ; chanel #1
˗ˏˋ nicknames. olive, liv ; ivy, olive
……❪ same names, same energy... kinda. okay so conan introduced them, because he thought it was cool that two of his besties have the same name. they soon became really close after meeting in LA for the first time. something between them instantly clicked and they became the talk of their fandoms. a lot of olivia's fans didn't even listen to kpop before they met, and now they support and some even stan ateez because of their relationship. and same with atiny as well ❫
……❪ these two are the type of friends to go on shopping trips, try new foods, go to museums. really anything new and exciting while still being seemingly classy yet chaotic of them. they will often find themselves spening more time spilling tea to each other than anything though. when minvy officially announced their relationship, there were pictures of the two olivia's spilling tea about it over some coffee in LA. ❫
……❪ ivy sees a lot of people being mean to olivia, and she does not like it at all. she's quick to defend ing olivia's name and brand. and olivia is the exact same for ivy. they both care about each other so much and always have so much fun together as a duo. ❫

"Thank you!", Taehyung chimes with his oh so attractive boxy smile on display as he pays for the bouquet of daisies which is now wrapped ever so gingerly by those veiny long slender fingers of his that he bought for a certain someone.Smiling at the thought of the said person while pushing his black locks behind he gets in his Genesis GV80 SUV and drives off.
Tumblr media
Distant footsteps are heard approaching nearer as every second passes.Jungkook strides downstairs beaming at his handsome fiance holding his favorite flowers.
"Hey,beautiful!",Taehyung winks at the man walking towards him with his flashing bunny teeth as his smile reaches those doe eyes that are now half covered with his brown locks.
Tumblr media
"Hey handsome!"Jungkook laughs and takes the bouquet in a delicate hold sniffing the delightful aroma before he kisses Taehyung on the cheek as an act of appreciation.
"What's the occasion by the way?"Jungkook asks as he puts the bouquet in a glass vase kept on the cabinet right beside a mattress attached to the bay window getting basked in the mellow luminosity of the crescent moon glowing just as bright!
"No reason in particular, there's a new flower shop on my way home from the studio. They had daisies and it reminded me of you.",Taehyung whispers the last few words against Jungkook's right shoulder as his large left palm reaches to his fiances thin waist which gets fully covered with his mere palms while keeping the right palm inside the right pocket of his cedar brown pants out of habit as he nuzzles against the said man's neck taking in the sweet fragrant of the strawberry scented lotion radiating from him.Jungkook hums smiling as he melts in comfort and rests the back of his head on his handsome fiance's shoulder before he turns around facing him and puts his left palm on his bicep feeling the thick muscle and with his other palm he keeps drawing circles on the broad chest over the beige button up he was wearing.
"Sominie nuna called, they're back from honeymoon and invited us for a dinner tomorrow.Kyungie nuna will bake pastries for us!",Jungkook whispers back, smiling enjoying the serenity and warmth of his fiance.
"That's good, its been a while we've had a get together.",Taehyung replies having his arms wrapped arms around Jungkook's waist massaging the built muscle lying under the black oversized hoodie."How was the meeting?"He inquires.
"Good, longer than I expected though. So I left early,as soon as it finished actually."Jungkook laughs."Go get freshen up then help me making dinner."He guides the older towards the stairs, missing the warmth already before he walks to the kitchen to finish the cutting first. He hardly lets the older use knives.
He was almost done cutting vegetables when he felt those familiar large veiny arms snaking around his waist again, nearly flinching as he didn't realize the other's presence because of the earbuds he had on listening to his kitchen playlist."Sir,I'd really appreciate if you roast these vegetables for me. I'll cuddle you after dinner anyway.",Jungkook laughs at the older who was now in a comfy brown T.
Tumblr media
"Kinky,are we?"Taehyung laughs.
"Hyung!",Jungkook whines, his cheeks turning beet red making the elder laugh more.Leaving a quick peck on Jungkook's nape the older puts a pan on the stove to heat the oil after taking one bud for himself humming to the music along with the other.
"Shooting starts tomorrow,I'm excited about this one.You know, its my first time working with Yoongi hyung.Today he was frustrated though.Chim and he kept bickering the entire day.It started because Jimin found out Rose is dating Jisoo nuna.A totally different topic",Taehyung laughs as he puts the roasted vegetables on a plate.
"Aren't you surprised?",Taehyung asks the younger.
"I knew.",Jungkook mumbles already running out of the kitchen as the older approaches him.
"And you two didn't tell me?!",Taehyung exclaims as he starts tickling the younger. He stops when Jungkook starts running out of breath.
"They forbade me",Jungkook pouts clutching on his stomach, back leaning on the stairs.
Tumblr media
"I feel betrayed.",The older puts a palm on the left side of his chest as he walks back to the kitchen. The younger follows him with his hands wrapped around the other as he laughs at the other's dramatic ass.Upon reaching the kitchen Taehyung gasps and gives the brunette smooches all over his face when he notices Jungkook put glass noodles on two bowls.
"What was that for?!",Jungkook squeaks with flushed cheeks as he walks to the dinning table with the bowls.
"For japchae. Also, you're forgiven for the betrayal",Taehyung flashes a grin.
"Well you bought me flowers.",he mumbles as he pours himself a glass of water cheeks turning a light hue of red.
"I can do that everyday.",Taehyung smiles fondly at his blushing fiance as he serves himself the food.
"Are you planing on getting bored of your favorite food, hyung?",Jungkook laughs as he adds extra spice on his vegetables.
"No way on this holy earth can I get tired of 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 cooking, babe!",Taehyung exclaims with a mouthful of the food emphasizing 'your'.
Tumblr media
"Hyung! You might choke!Dont talk with food in your mouth",Jungkook mumbles with concerned face soon regretting his choice of words when the older smirks as he finishes the food in his mouth and mutters,
"Well,I do the choking.",Making the younger blush for the nth time of the day already. He laughs seeing Jungkook taking large bites of noodles to hide the blush."Whats with you using all kinky words today.Want daddy that badly?"Taehyung whispers wiggling his eyebrows making the younger choke.Taehyung runs to him and starts patting his back gently after handing him the glass of water. When the younger calms down they both burst into a fit of laughter. After finishing their dinner and eating strawberry ice cream as desert both enter the kitchen with the stack of dishes and the chopsticks in their hands.
"I just remembered So Hee nuna's birthday is nearing!",Jungkook gasps while washing a plate before keeping it on the counter for the older to wipe it dry.
Tumblr media
"Right! Its next month!Do you want to plan a surprise party?",Taehyung asks wiping the plate dry with a paper towel before putting it on the shelf.
"Sounds fun!Lets talk to Hobi hyung if he has anything planned.",Jungkook suggests as he washes the last bowl.
Tumblr media
"Yeah, lets do this!",Taehyung closes the shelf as he approaches the younger who was standing against the counter waiting for him to be done with his back leaned on it.
He then takes both his hands interlocking them with his own both leaning in for a kiss. Check out the ao3 link for the 𝒔𝒎𝒖𝒕: https://archiveofourown.org/works/48704140/chapters/122857843. "Tomorrow's a big day.",The younger whispers, yawning for the nth time that night with his eyes closed, back pressed to Taehyung's chest as both sit in the tub inside their shared bathroom attached to their shared bedroom taking a hot bath to relax their muscles.
Taehyung hums as they cuddle wrapped in a comfy blanket of grey silk on the king sized bed covered in a white velvety sheet in their bedroom, both facing the window.Taehyung closes the curtain as the sunlight starts peeking in.
Tumblr media
"Sometimes I just wonder if you are too good to be true!",Taehyung's words get muffled against the crook of the other's neck, hands placed on the curve of his waist ever so lightly,Jungkook's hands intertwining with the elder's.
"Look who's talking! Its the other way around"Jungkook mumbles in a sleepy voice as both drift off to a deep slumber.

Dec. 21, 2022
In a year of groundbreaking news from the frozen (but warming) Arctic to the shores of the Red Sea, The Times’s Climate Desk produced hundreds of articles, covering multibillion-dollar legislation, clandestine obstructionism, even a “shrinkflation” expert.
Here are selected pieces that the journalists who write about climate found most memorable this year, in their own words.
〰︎
“Many American cities have set ambitious climate goals, but slashing planet-warming emissions within their borders is often easier said than done, especially when it comes to transportation. My colleague Nadja Popovich and I went to Portland, Ore., a city that considers itself a climate leader, to find out why. What we found was a bitter fight over official plans to expand several major highways.”
— Brad Plumer
Can Portland Be a Climate Leader Without Reducing Driving?
Chona Kasinger for The New York Times
〰︎
“Where and how you live changes your climate impact. Mira Rojanasakul, Brad Plumer and I published a series of maps that show how much households across the United States contribute to climate change, on average, by driving, powering their homes, taking flights and more. You’ll notice some clear patterns.”
— Nadja Popovich
The Climate Impact of Your Neighborhood, Mapped
The New York Times
〰︎
“At every step of his political career, the senior U.S. senator from West Virginia helped a local power plant that is the sole customer of his private coal business. Along the way, he blocked ambitious climate action.”
— Christopher Flavelle
How Joe Manchin Aided Coal, and Earned Millions
Trucks being loaded at the Humphrey No. 7 Mine in Maidsville, W. Va. Erin Schaff
〰︎
“Around the globe, the wild places that animals depend on for life are shrinking. This article, with stunning graphics by Lauren Leatherby, shows you some of the animals most at risk and tells about a crucial global effort to preserve habitat.”
— Catrin Einhorn
Animals Are Running Out of Places to Live
Tumblr media
The New York Times
〰︎
“Climate change cases in the courts are coming up against a coordinated, multiyear strategy by Republican attorneys general and conservative allies designed to kill environmental regulations.”
— Coral Davenport
The Republican Drive to Tilt Courts Against Climate Action Reaches a Crucial Moment
Shuran Huang for The New York Times
〰︎
“A team of scientists is trying to make a map of all that we cannot see: the fungal networks under our feet and that may hold some answers to the climate crisis.”
— Somini Sengupta
Unearthing the Secret Superpowers of Fungus
Tumblr media
The New York Times
〰︎
“Hundreds of airstrips have been secretly built on protected lands in Brazil to support the criminal mining industry. My colleagues and I examined thousands of satellite images to locate more than 1,200 of these illegal airstrips across the Brazilian Amazon, many of them part of criminal networks that are destroying Indigenous land and threatening people.”
— Manuela Andreoni
The Secret Airstrips Behind Brazil’s Illegal Mining Crisis
Victor Moriyama for The New York Times
〰︎
“Saudi Arabia is working to keep fossil fuels at the center of the world economy for decades to come by lobbying, funding research and using its diplomatic muscle to obstruct climate action.”
— Hiroko Tabuchi
Inside the Saudi Strategy to Keep the World Hooked on Oil
A solar farm at the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center in Riyadh, the Saudi capital.Iman Al-Dabbagh for The New York Times
〰︎
“It’s harder than it should be to know which item goes in which bin. But it’s never too late to learn. Hiroko Tabuchi, Sean Catangui and I built a guessing game and explained how recycling chaos is almost by design.”
— Winston Choi-Schagrin
Trash or Recycling? Why Plastic Keeps Us Guessing
Rinee Shah
〰︎
“Sometimes, the disasters we need to be planning for aren’t the first ones we expect. Mira Rojanasakul and I look at a big one.”
— Raymond Zhong
The Coming California Megastorm
The New York Times
〰︎
“The Irish botanist, biochemist and author Diana Beresford-Kroeger has devoted her life to saving forests and cultivates native trees that are resilient to climate change in the woods around her home.”
— Cara Buckley
Using Science and Celtic Wisdom to Save Trees (and Souls)
Diana Beresford-Kroeger at her home in Ontario. Nasuna Stuart-Ulin for The New York Times
〰︎
“The monsoon plays a critical role in the lives of nearly two billion people in South Asia. How will they cope as it changes in a warming world? Don’t miss the explanatory graphics by my colleagues Zach Levitt and Jeremy White.”
— Henry Fountain
South Asia’s Monsoon Is Becoming More Extreme
A rainy gathering in Mumbai. Saumya Khandelwal for The New York Times
〰︎
“The Congo Basin rainforest is second only to the Amazon in size and importance for absorbing planet-warming carbon dioxide, but the illegal logging along the Congo River is taking a toll as logs are tied into rafts and floated down the river.”
— Dionne Searcey
Raft by Raft, a Rainforest Loses Its Trees
A raft of logs being prepared for a trip down the Congo River.Ashley Gilbertson for The New York Times
〰︎
“A crucial aquifer is running low after decades of groundwater overdraft, so officials are pumping in treated sewage water to replenish it. It’s an increasingly common strategy as heavy demand and climate change strain water supplies.”
— Elena Shao
There’s Something in the Water in Virginia. Before You Say ‘Yuck,’ Wait.
A sediment sample taken in Newport News, Va. Kristen Zeis for The New York Times
〰︎
“Even as the Biden administration moves to promote renewable energy, Republicans at the state level, especially a group of well-organized and well-funded state treasurers, are pushing back and promoting fossil fuels.”
— David Gelles
How Republicans Are ‘Weaponizing’ Public Office Against Climate Action
Riley Moore, the West Virginia treasurer, announced that several major banks would be barred from government contracts with his state.Kristian Thacker for The New York Times
〰︎
“A new crop of leftist leaders in Latin America has fashioned themselves as climate change crusaders, arguing that fossil fuels haven’t lifted enough people out of poverty to justify their contribution to global warming. Colombia’s leader, Gustavo Petro, is perhaps the most strident. He wants to make his oil-producing country the first to fully decarbonize its economy.”
— Max Bearak
In Colombia, Drilling Pays the Bills. The Country’s Leaders Want to Quit Oil.
An oil field in the Arauca Department of Colombia.
〰︎
“Under a new climate and tax law, the federal government will lease hundreds of millions of additional acres for offshore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico in the next decade, even as it invests $370 billion to move the country away from fossil fuels and develop wind, solar and other renewable energy.”
— Lisa Friedman
Where the New Climate Law Means More Drilling, Not Less
Saltwater from rising seas killed a grove of cypresses in Bayou Chauvin, La.Bryan Tarnowski for The New York Times
〰︎
“Some 35 to 40 percent of all food ends up going unused, experts say. And food production accounts for more than a quarter of global emissions. A few new apps are trying to fix that.”
— Clare Toeniskoetter
Lots of Food Gets Tossed. These Apps Let You Buy It, Cheap.
Lawrence Agyei for The New York Times
〰︎
“Is San Francisco’s fog disappearing? Maybe. Some research has suggested as much. Other research says maybe not. Fog is so elusive that it is hard to say how foggy it has been in the past — never mind trying to predict the future. What is climate change doing to fog? And why does it matter? Scott Reinhard and I break down the complexity. ”
