Unfortunately, it's all easier said than done. With the help of her childhood friends Umi Sonoda and Kotori Minami, Honoka forms μ's (pronounced "muse") to boost awareness and popularity of her school. Searching for a solution, she comes across popular school idol group A-RISE and sets out to create a school idol group of her own. However, second year Honoka Kousaka refuses to let it go without a fight. Otonokizaka High School is in a crisis! With the number of enrolling students dropping lower and lower every year, the school is set to shut down after its current first years graduate. With no time to process the revelation that flips her world upside down, Vivy is catapulted into a century-long journey to avert the violent history yet to come. In a theme park where she hardly ever gets a proper audience, she strives to pour her heart out into her performances, bound to repeat it day after day-that is, until an advanced AI from the future appears before her and enlists her help in stopping a devastating war a hundred years in the making. Vivy, the first ever autonomous AI, is a songstress tasked with spreading happiness through her voice. Turning the clock back a hundred years, AIs are already an integral part of human society, programmed with specific missions meant to be carried out for their entire course of operation. Meanwhile, her namesake is a solitary punk vocalist whose impassioned romance with her band's bassist, Ren Honjou, comes to a sudden end. Without letting herself be dismayed by Shouji's decision to study in Tokyo, Nana works hard to earn enough money and follow him there. The former has a cheerful and friendly nature, but her naivety has steered her romantic life astray until she meets her dependable boyfriend-Shouji Endo. With their hearts set on going to Tokyo, Nana Komatsu dreams about blissful love, while Nana Osaki aims for a successful music career. Departing from their respective hometowns, two young women with identical names are brought together in their pursuit of new beginnings.

Love Live's 12th anniversary was last Sunday, oh my lord. Umm, a few days late at that. I guess that's a theme lately for me? Also these tags are going to be a giant ass mess 😅 I've personally been part of it for 6 years after some friends showed me the goofier scenes in muse (all featuring Kotori!) and we started SIF. Later cosplayed Kotori a year later and here we are. It's been one hell of a crazy journey but I would do it all over again. Between the great friends I've made, hilarious and memorable moments, and everything this series has done for me, it's great. And I know it's done the same for a lot of us. This isn't even all of my cosplays - because Kotori would be an entire slide LMAO - but just one of each girl I did from the series. I wish I had Ren from Liella, but hopefully this summer I'll have her. I do have plans to complete my Aquors best girls with Hanamaru soon as well, and then Niji with Ayumu (thanks to a few in particular lol), Karin and...maybe a fourth? I don't plan on visiting Mari again, she is fun but I'm dedicated more to Dia, Riko and Hanamaru now from Aquors. Can't wait to see what else this series brings us! We have four more Liella girls on the way, and Niji season 2 is under way. I wonder how long till a fifth generation starts, and what they'll do then. Ace Attorney, Danganronpa, Love Live for the ask meme

STRAP YOURSELVES IN, KIDDOS. THIS IS A FUCKING ESSAY RIGHT HERE.

Ace Attorney:

Favorite Male Character: Miles Edgeworth. Shi-Long Lang is great as well. I also have a soft spot for Klavier, Sebastian and Apollo. And, naturally, my space son, Clay Terran.

Favorite Female Character: Kay Faraday!! Props also go to Mia Fey and Trucy Wright, as well as Athena and Jinxie.

Favorite Het Ship: Farabeste (Sebastian/Kay). Cykesquill as well, but I’m very specific about how and when I like it...like, ridiculously specific. Diego/Mia is good as well. For something more ridiculous that I think would be fun, Clay and Athena could have had a great dynamic. Maybe even Clay and Jinxie, if we go out and be totally wild.

Favorite Slash Ship (both M/M and F/F): Klapollo, Langworth, Nahyuta/Simon. Vera/Trucy, lady Cykesquill, Robin/Myriam and Athena/Juniper for the ladies.

Least Favorite Male Character: how to I condense the list of the bastards? Kristoph is evil, but I cannot deny he had charm as a character - he’s terrifying, but fascinating, so I cannot name him as my least favourite. I think I’ll go with either von Karma or Blaze Debeste. They’re responsible for so much misery, and they don’t have any tragic reasons for being the way they are.

Least Favorite Female Character: Ma//ya Fe//y. I know the reasons people have for liking her, and I can forgive some flaws in writing, but she simply has too many of them. I know she is a courageous girl who ultimately wishes to do good, but the way she acts, especially in the first two games... just make me go ‘hmmmm’. Honestly, my favourite games in the series are those where I don’t get to see her. Young Pearl is also very low down on the list, and she was my least favourite for a long while, but her teenage years made me soften up to her, she’s pretty great in DD.

Least Favorite Het Ship: anything that encourages abuse, like Grant/Lana? Why would you do this? Also, I’m not fond of Athena/Apollo or Juniper/Apollo. Apollo is far too gay in my eyes to ever be together with a girl. Phoenix/Maya is another one I dislike.

Least Favorite Slash Ship (both M/M and F/F): same rule as above applies. Aside from those, I... don’t have many slash ships I actively dislike, surprisingly? My main one would be Wri//ght//wor//th, since, in my opinion, it’s very overhyped, and I cannot turn around in this fandom without seeing it, but even that is mostly just...annoyance.

Dirty Little Secret: I haven’t forgotten about my dumbass theory. I’m just...really fucking slow.

Headcanon(s): this will need to be answered in its own separate asks. I have headcanons for everyone. For now, though - Jinxie Tenma is a Fey.

Unpopular Opinion(s): I like Gyakuten Kenji far more than the original games. In general, games with a protag that’s not Phoenix and newer games in the series I tend to like more. Not to imply that the original trilogy was bad or anything, but... Edgeworth is far more solid as a protagonist, not only because his side was relatively unexplored, but because his investigation methods were so much more sensible. Phoenix has this ‘wing it’ approach, which works fine, until you see past it. When you see past it, the tension build-up it tries to pull fails massively, and you just get annoyed by Phoenix never thinking ahead for anything, or being oblivious. With Edgeworth, when there are moments of tension, they appear because of something genuinely unexpected, or because Edgeworth made a miscalculation (which allows character growth). Even when Edgeworth has to pull dumb or crazy shit, it feels like it makes sense, because he thinks, even when he panics. Also, Phoenix is tied down by the worst accompanying duo of Maya and Pearl all the time, while Edgeworth acquires an absolutely amazing set of sidekicks (and he not only gets fun new ones, like Kay and Lang, but there’s so much detail in his interactions with Gumshoe, Franziska and Larry as well? It was great to see the Edgeworth/Larry dynamic of the friendship). Plus, I like the Logic Chess things, the soundtrack is my favourite (how exactly COULD you even attempt to top Shi-Long Lang’s theme???), at least if we’re not counting PLvsAA as a part of this universe, and I like the visuals of it much better. In short, everybody should play these fucking games right fucking now, and storm Capcom offices so they actually port GK2 for the Western market.

A lot of the same criteria apply for the newer games, too. While DD was a comeback for Phoenix, it was a game with mixed protagonists, and it was a new Phoenix as well. Apollo probably has my second favourite supporting character crew after Edgeworth, and, at the time, his Perceive mechanic was refreshing to see after being stuck to the same gimmick for 3 games. Same with Athena. She differs dractically from both Phoenix and Apollo, and brings a new mechanic and a new set of associated people. In other words? I’m happy this series is trying new things, and exploring extra protagonists where it can. It has improved a whole bunch as a result.

Danganronpa:

Favorite Male Character: Byakuya Togami, Kiyotaka Ishimaru. Nagisa Shingetsu. Gundham Tanaka, Hajime Hinata, Kuzuryuu Fuyuhiko, Nagito Komaeda. Shuuichi Saihara, Ouma Kokichi, Rantarou Amami.

Favorite Female Character: Aoi Asahina, Celes, Touko Fukawa. Sonia Nevermind, Peko Pekoyama, Akane Owari, Ibuki Mioda. Angie Yonaga, Kirumi Toujou, Maki Harukawa, Tenko Chabashira.

Favorite Het Ship: Togami/Asahina, Ishimaru/Asahina, Hinata/Ibuki, Tanaka/Pekoyama (I’m especially fond of this one, also titled Soft Animals Edge Duo). Sonia/Kuzuryuu is also great, though that is a platonic ship, as I headcanon Sonia as aro.

Favorite Slash Ship (both M/M and F/F): Naegi/Ishimaru, Naegi/Togami. KomaNaegi is quite pure, but a friend also got me into KomaSouda as a complimentary ship to TanaPeko. A crackship, but still a favourite is Izuru/Ryouta. And, of course, the ultimate fave - Saiouma. (A nice shoutout also goes to Oumota and Amamota). As for the ladies, Kirizono and Celesgiri, and all gay Asahina ships are good, SoniAkane & Pekobuki. In V3, Tenko is mega gay, so there’s a chance for every gay ship, however, my favourite one is Tenko/Maki. If we’re talking non-Tenko ships, Angie/Maki sounds fun.

Least Favorite Male Character: in DR1, surprisingly, none. Well, Hagakure can get on my nerves, but I like just alright all of them. In SDR2, Nidai, in my opinion, didn’t have that great of a development, so I guess him. Though I also have plenty of issues with Souda. In V3, Gon//ta Go//ku//ha//ra.

Least Favorite Female Character: All DR1 girls are good, and even if they aren’t, they’re at least interesting or entertaining. But if I have to pick, Junko, if we’re judging morality. In SDR2, Mi//kan Tsu//mi//ki and Hi//yo//ko Sai//onji,in terms of morality and/or being dicks. In terms of rather poor writing (despite having a good idea), Chi//a//ki Na//na//mi. In V3, H//i//m//i//k//o Y//u//m//e//n//o and K//a//e//d//e A//k//a//m//a//t//s//u. The final one is also my least favourite in the entirety of the series as a whole.

Least Favorite Het Ship: Jun//ko//ma//e//da. In general, any Junko ship is not very good for plenty of reasons. Na//e//gi//ri. In SDR2, Souda/Sonia (she’s clearly not comfortable with him), Nidai/Akane, Hi//na//na//mi.. Not sure if should be mentioned here, but romantic Kuzupeko? Mostly because I cannot picture it as a thing. I do, however, like them platonically, they do care about each other a whole bunch. In V3, Sa//i//ma//tsu (never make me look at it).

Least Favorite Slash Ship (both M/M and F/F): Chi//hi//mon//do. Even if I do like Mondo okay, it’s not healthy. Ka//mu//ko//ma. Son//dam. Jun//ko//mi//kan? Mahiru/Peko for sure. Kiib//ou//ma, too.

And the one I guarantee I’ll receive anon hate over - Te//n//hi//mi.

Dirty Little Secret: this series somehow manages to combine the good with the ridiculous in such a way that I can accept.

Unpopular Opinion(s): I am the literal embodiment of unpopular opinions in this franchise. I think V3 is the best game of the series, and it had a brilliant twist (both the start one and the final one). I don’t really ship the most popular ships, the obvious exception being Saiouma (and, to an extent, SoniAkane? It’s a popular Akane ship, at least). I think Saihara is a far better protag choice than the other option that was presented, since the story and its structure was made to fit him. I’m the unpopular opinion and rarepair central in this fucking thing. (Please help me.)

Love Live!:

Favorite Male Character: yay for not having prominent males, which means I get to skip 2 more questions here.

Favorite Female Character: In Muse’s, my top 3 is Hanayo, Eli and Maki. In Aquors, my top 3 is You, Kanan and Dia (though Mari and Chika are also very lovable).

Favorite Slash Ship (both M/M and F/F): Makipana! It’s very very cute. I also quite like HonoEli. HonoMaki is also quite nice. In Aquors, YouKanan or DiaKanan.

Least Favorite Female Character: Not unpopular by any means, but Ni//co Ya//za//wa. In terms of singing voice, Kotori. In Aquors, R//i//k//o S//a//k//u//r//a//u//c//h//i.

Least Favorite Slash Ship (both M/M and F/F): Ni//co//ma//ki??? I will never understand why people like it. In Aquors, Chi//ka//ri//ko and You//ri//ko.

Dirty Little Secret: I quite like A-RISE. Every song they’ve ever done is an absolute banger, as the youth says.

Unpopular Opinion(s): would you look at that. Another fandom where I’m the monarch of rarepairs.

Christmas HCs: µ’s

Every year they have a big Christmas get-together the week before Christmas, celebrating their own Christmas day at the end of it. For that week they all live together and celebrate at Maki’s Holiday Home (The one from Season 2)

Maki spends insane amounts decorating the holiday home. It’s like Danny Devito in Deck the Halls, it’s like she’s trying to get the house seen from space with the sheer quantity of lights. She has it all, inflatable santas, outdoor Christmas trees, all imaginable decorations.

At least once a year during the Christmas season, the other girls sing Snow Halation for Nozomi. Sort of as a way to honour her as well as to thank her for the greatest Christmas present they had ever received. Nozomi gets close to crying every time.

Nico is the one who cooks Christmas dinner for them. After years of doing it for her family, she’s absolutely fantastic at it. Unfortunately it’s a whole lot more difficult with the shenanigans going on. Thankfully some of the other members help (Sadly, although she wants to, Maki isn’t allowed to help, as all food she makes falls to ruin.)

Kotori makes a lot of decorations and outfits for the holiday. Every pillow case, duvet covers, pretty much whatever can be made out of fabric is sewn by Kotori and made to be Christmas themed. She’s also in charge of stockings, colour coding and sewing names onto them.

Umi is always in charge of picking the tree. She has a great eye for it. She anlyses each tree carefully, always picking the best one.

Honoka puts the star on the tree each year. It’s a nine pointed one with a silver muse symbol on it, given to them by a fan. Honoka puts it up, sort of representing her status as a leader and the heart of the group.

Hanayo organises the Christmas playlist. There’s a good amount of classic Christmas songs, combined with some unexpected older or less known music. And of course, lots and lots of idol songs. Particularly, one by an up and coming group named Aquors.

Eli being the sort of parent of Muse does all the typical parent stuff. Eating the carrot + mince pie left out for the reindeer and santa, leaving the gifts beneath the tree, etc. Nozomi even makes her dress up as Santa while she does it, demanding she be quiet in case Maki wakes up.

Rin is in charge of putting on a fireworks display every year. Since she’s been so insistent on it for so long, they finally gave her the opportunity. While Muse were scared at first, Rin is actually very safe, and her displays are always very pretty. On Christmas eve they sit down in the snow and watch it go.

Hi,I don’t rlly have much to add besides here’s some random LL related thoughts that have been on my mind lately :]

• So I’ve been reading every Nijigasaki bond story,and first off I’ve been really enjoying them! Like they’re making me appreciate these girls and this group more than I did before BUT that’s not what I was going to say…I’ve noticed a bit of a pattern about each album because of them and this pattern has given me a theory

- Tokimeki Runners : These solo songs are essentially their image songs,each song given to each girl fits their personality / character and goals the most. They serve as an introduction to each character

- Love U My Friends : In the bond stories,the girls write and make these songs for Yuu / us. Yuu even helps them write some (like how we help write Karin’s and Shizuku’s I think) hence the name of the album “Love U My Friends”,Yuu / us being the friend

- Just Believe!!! : Again,in the bond stories when we unlock this set of solos,they focus on making fan clubs and performing them for their fans. Of course WE could also be the fans in this scenario,but they perform them specifically for the fans in the fan club in the stories so that’s kind of what I think the theme of this album is fndjdj

- L!L!L! (Love the Life We Live!) : Once again in the bond stories where we unlock this set of solos,the whole thing is there’s a film festival going on and each member has been selected to make the theme song for a different club’s film. Hence why each song is wildly different from what we’ve heard so far,they’re themed after a another club’s film for the festival

- So this brings me to what I think the “theme” will be for their 5th (non anime) solos…bear with me idk how to explain this properly I kind of think that the theme for the bond stories and these solos will KIND OF be a style / concept swap?? Like obviously they won’t just be singing each other’s songs but more like swapping concepts with another member idk like Ai doing something more traditional sounding like a Shioriko solo,maybe Shizuku doing a more cutesy little devil-y type song like a Kasumi solo,etc. But they also would still put their own spin on it so it sounds like THEIR take on another girls song…idk if that makes sense (this would also spark new interactions / friendships in the bond stories which I’d be ALL about)

• Second and less wordy…it has been a MINUTE since we’ve gotten a Kotori UR in SIFAS like this new rotation has been all out of wack to me we’ve gotten FOUR Ai URs in the past few months,at least two Nico URs that throw off the current Muse rotation and didn’t Rin just get a UR last month??? Kotori hasn’t gotten a UR since February WHERE IS SHE MYNET????? WHERE???

• And lastly idk if y’all have seen this

But apparently,for the 9th SIF anniversary Liella is doing a collab song with SIF and even doing an outfit contest with the theme being “little devil”…and all I have to say about that is if Mei and Sumire AREN’T the UR pair or at least one of them isn’t the UR I will yell so loud that is all

Rules for Requests and Commissions!

It’s a little lengthy, so it’s under the cut. If you want to request something or help me out through college with commissions, please read through these~

So, who exactly will you write about?

As this series has many, many characters, here’s the ones that I will write for:

Muse

Aqours

Nijigasaki School Idol Club (I am still learning about Shioriko, so please be patient)

Please note that there are certain exceptions to these rules, but these will be explained further down (see What are the no-no’s for requests/commissions?).

What can I request?

I can write short headcanons and one-shots.

For headcanons, please keep in mind that there are rules to how many characters can be included per request. For Love Live, it’s up to 5 per request (exceptions include requesting all of Muse, all of Aqours, or all of Nijigasaki).

For one-shots, requests will be shorter than commissioned works, having a maximum of 1000 words.

How many requests will you take?

I will take 15 requests before closing the box. Once I close it, I’ll delete any request received before reopening. Once the box has 5 requests or less, I’ll reopen the box for requests. If you really want me to write something...there’s always commissions!

What can I commission?

I take commissions on longer one-shots! (See also How long can my commission be?)

What do you charge for commissions?

The price is very simple for my works.

$0.50 USD for every 100 words

The baseline is as simple as that! I do have minimums and maximums for word counts you can request, but if you want to know how much you need to pay for a certain amount of words, just use this for reference.

How do I request a commission? How do I pay?

You can send in a commission request one of two ways. If you have a Tumblr account, all you have to do is DM me! If you don’t have one or can’t DM, that’s okay! Just send your request to my email, [email protected], and we can work through it there. I strictly work through PayPal for payment. Further details will be given during the commissioning process.

How long can my commission be?

I have a minimum of 1000 words for any commission, with a maximum of 6000, in theory.

For simplicity, I have created three “tiers” you can ask for when sending in your request and the respective price ranges for each:

Sprout

Length: 1,000-2,999 words

Price Range: $5.00-$14.99 USD

Bud

Length: 3,000-4,999 words

Price Range: $15.00-$24.99 USD

Bloom

Length: 5,000-6,000 words

Price Range: $25.00-$30.00 USD

If you want to request a commission that’s more than a Bloom, we can discuss it over email or DMs.

What are the no-no’s for requests/commissions?

While I am open and willing to many types of requests and commissions, there are a few subjects that I refuse to write. It is nothing against the requester. The list of “no-no’s” are simply subjects that I do not feel comfortable with writing about. I ask that you do not send commission requests with any of the following:

I will not write anything NSFW with these girls, so please keep this in mind.

Dia and Ruby are great to write as sisters, but I refuse to write them as a romantic pairing.

If you have a request involving a reader/OC insert, please specify pronouns and/or gender. I will default to gender-neutral and use they/them pronouns, so if you would like a m!reader or f!reader and/or he/him or she/her used, please specify this in your request (see also Can I request “x Reader” or OCs?).

I will not, under any circumstances, take requests or commissions involving the four letter word starting with R.

Other topics that I will rarely write include harming one’s self and deep religious themes. If you really want one of these topics in a commission, I may consider it. However, there will need to be additional discussion before beginning, so keep this in mind.

I hold the right to decline any request or commission offer if I feel I cannot adequately write about the subject requested.

Can I request “x Reader” or OCs?

Absolutely! I just have two requests that you follow, depending on which one you want:

If you are wanting an OC, I would like a description of the character included in the request. Include as much as you can about them; I want to be able to write them in the most accurate way!

When I have fully written through the commission, I will send it to you as a “first draft phase”. You can ask for any additions or omissions in this phase, and after I will add or delete anything you ask, along with polishing it up and making it just right!

What on earth are “birthday flash sales”?

It’s really simple! In order to celebrate the birthdays of the characters I write for, I’ll be having a sale on commissions that include that character! For the day of the character’s birthday and two days before it, the baseline prices of commissions having them will be slashed!

Here’s how it works:

$0.50 USD per 100 words –> $0.25 USD per 100 words

So essentially, all works are half price!

1) When Kotori adds a new contact to her phone, if she doesn’t have a picture of the person in her phone, she just uses pictures of birds! Kamiya’s bird was a swallow. It was since been changed to a picture of him performing at a theme park, the first live performance she got to tag along with Cafe Parade in.

2) His name in her phone was “Yuki kami”, a combination of his name that means “Snow hair” on account of the swallow’s fluffy white underside. This has since been changed to “✈️Cafe Kamiya✈️”.

3) Kotori only ever calls Kamiya if she can’t go into work or to plan to meet up at the train station to go together on Cafe Parade business. It’s not just in a wanting to get closer as friends type thing though; she just knows first hand that he might get lost on the other side of the city, so she tries her best to help everyone out by being his guide. Sometimes he forgets where the train station is though, she has to call to either locate him or direct him to the train station in one piece.

4) As soon as she exchanged numbers with everyone, Kamiya added Kotori to the Cafe Parade group chat. She always tries to reply to every message that’s directed at her and read everything just in case something really important pops up ( even Asselin’s insanely long speeches; she replies with a few words and emojis back before talking to him about it the next morning. She’s convinced Asselin could be a writer and tries to persuade him to novel a bit. Kamiya is convinced Kotori is an angel for reading it all and reacting so sweetly every time ).

5) Even though she becomes close to everyone in Cafe Parade, its Kamiya with whom she shares little problems with now and then. Whether it’s something that bothered her in the cafe that stuck in her mind, or her reasons for not being able to go into work that day bogging her down. Kamiya is there instantly to reassure her or comfort her, and it makes Kotori realize how quick to answer he is, and makes their bond stronger with it. Though she does wonder about his amount of phone usage with him always replying so fast, but she’s not one to pry into matters like that.

How to Handle a Nico: En Passant

Author’s Note: After several Anon Asks, a cute illustration by myon, lots of thinking and even more banging my head against things, my µ’s muse finally let me write this scene.

“Oh, what are these, nya?” Rin asked, poking at the bag on the clubroom table.

“Nico-chan and I found some props for the Wonderland photoshoot.” Kotori replied, opening the bag and retrieving two items. “I thought these would look wonderful on Hanayo-chan and Rin-chan.”

“Crowns?” Hanayo blinked.

“For the king and queen pieces of a chess set.” Nico explained.

“Chess?” Rin asked. “I thought Alice met cards?”

“In the first book, yes.” Nico nodded. “The second book had a chess theme.”

“So which one is the queen?” Rin inspected the crowns in Kotori’s hands.

“This one.” The costume designer held it up.

Rin quickly grabbed it, turned and placed it on Hanayo’s head. “It looks cute on you, Kayo-chin.” She grinned happily at her friend.

“I think it would look cute on you as well, Rin-chan.” The youngest µ’s member replied.

The cat-like girl grinned as she took the other crown. “Rin likes this one, nya!” She placed it on top of her head. “Rin and Kayo-chin can now rule together!” She pulled the other girl into a hug and nuzzled against her, not caring that the motion knocked both crowns off their heads.

“What other pieces do you have in there?” Honoka inquired, leaning over to get a better look in the bag.

“Two knights, two bishops and two rooks, just like the primary pieces of chess.” Nico explained as Kotori began setting out the props. “And one pawn for the ninth person, even though there are actually more pawns than that.”

“So, how should we decide who gets to represent which piece?” Umi asked.

“Perhaps we could draw for them?” Eli suggested.

“I think Umi-chan would make a fine knight.” Kotori said. “And we found these for the knights.” She handed the archer a prop sword.

“Umi-chan would definitely make an awesome knight.” The leader of µ’s agreed. “Ne, ne, what pieces are next to the knight?”

“The knight starts between a bishop and a rook.” The former student body president stated.

“Then Kotori-chan and I should each be one of those.”

“If that’s the case,” Nozomi spoke up, “I believe Honoka-chan would make a good rook.”

“Oh? Why’s that?”

“Because the rook moves in straight lines on the board.” The shrine maiden smiled at her junior. “And you’re always driving us forward.”

Honoka grinned. “I like that idea! Say, which one of these is for the rook?”

Kotori handed her the crown in question.

Honoka’s smile only grew as she placed the prop on her head. “µ’s! Forward!” She pointed straight ahead of herself as though giving an order to advance. This earned her a laugh from some of her friends.

“So, does that make Kotori-chan a bishop then?” Rin asked.

“I think that would suit her well.” Hanayo said before her gaze turned to one of the third years. “And with her spiritual powers, I think Nozomi would also make a good bishop.”

“I’ll happily represent the bishop with Kotori-chan.” Nozomi accepted her crown from the mentioned second year.

“And that just leaves three more, nya!” Rin looked back and forth among the girls in question. “I think Maki-chan and Eli-chan would be good as either a knight or a rook.”

“Yeah, I can see that.” Nico nodded before something clicked in her mind. “Hey, that would just leave the pawn for me!”

“Exactly.” Nozomi laughed.

“Nico is not a pawn!” The raven-haired girl protested.

“I dunno, Nicocchi, you’re pretty easily manipulated…”

“I am n…” Nico cut off as she realized she was playing into the trap of the purple-haired girl. She crossed her arms defiantly. “Nico should be a knight or rook. Maki-chan can be the pawn.” She turned to the redhead. “Right, Maki-chan? You don’t care what piece you represent, right?”

Maki, who up until now had remained silent, merely shrugged and twirled her hair around her finger. “Not really.”

Truth be told, she was looking forward more to seeing the outfits Kotori and the photography company had put together for them to wear. She had seen Kotori’s proposed designs and was curious how the final results would look on everyone. And it wasn’t as if she didn’t appreciate the addition of the accessories to compliment the theme, but it really didn’t matter which piece she ended up representing; Rin, Nico and Nozomi would probably find a way to tease her about it.

“We could still draw for it,” Eli pointed out, “even just with the three of us.”

“I think Eli-chan would make a lovely knight.” Kotori spoke up. “And then she could be next to Nozomi-chan.”

Nozomi chuckled. “I’d be fine with that, though Elicchi and I don’t always have to be next to each other for everything.”

“Maki-chan would also make a good knight.” Honoka pointed out.

“And Eli-chan is good a driving forward like Honoka-chan.” Kotori considered. “Perhaps she would make a good rook.”

“But that still leaves Nico with being a pawn!” Nico groused.

“Nicocchi is still complaining?” Nozomi held up her hands and flexed her fingers.

“Geh!” Nico took a step back, turned and retreated behind a taller redhead. “Maki-chan! Save me!” She cried before sticking her tongue out at her aggressor.

Maki wasn’t sure why, but the next thing she knew, she had a prop sword in her hand and she was turning to face an approaching Nozomi.

“Yup, Maki-chan is definitely a good knight, nya!” Rin proclaimed.

Nozomi dropped her hands and offered an amused smile. “I couldn’t agree more.”

For a moment, Nico felt her heartrate increase and warmth spread through her chest. She had only intended to tease her favorite first year and hadn’t expected Maki to actually react in such a way. She had decided months ago that she wanted to protect Maki, but after this display, she realized perhaps it wouldn’t be so bad to let Maki protect her in return. But only every once in a while. Nico was the older one, after all, so it was only right that Nico protected Maki more. Then she saw red spread to Maki’s ears.

“I… I, uhm…” The pianist sputtered as she dropped the sword back onto the table.

And with that, it was back to teasing. “Dwaaa!” Nico cooed, glomping onto the younger girl from behind. “Maki-chan looked so knightly when she defended Nico from the mean ol’ Nozomi!”

“Nico-chan… I just…”

“And you know, Nicocchi,” Nozomi smirked, “a rook shouldn’t need protection from a knight.”

“For the record,” Umi spoke up, “the pawn should never be dismissed offhand. They have the potential to turn into any other piece on the board, even another queen.”

“Another queen?” Nico raised an eyebrow.

“If it reaches the opponent’s side.”

“Which means the pawn needs to be protected.” Nozomi pointed out. “Like, say, by her knight.”

Maki’s blush had almost faded, but now it returned full force.

“And the pawn has a lot of special rules that allow it to do things no other piece can do.” The blue-haired girl continued. “For example, it can move farther on its opening move, or capture a piece simply by moving behind it.”

“Moving behind it?” Rin perked up. “Then Nico-chan just captured Maki-chan, nya!”

“I did, didn’t I?” Nico giggled as she shifted her embrace so she could rest her chin on the other girl’s shoulder.

“Captured?” Maki questioned, despite not resisting being held. “What the heck?”

“Also, I believe Alice was essentially the pawn in the story.” Hanayo added.

Nico blinked. “You know, I think you’re right Hanayo.” She grinned. “Nico in Wonderland has a nice ring to it, I believe.”

“I don’t get it.” Maki sighed.

“Fine, fine, Nico will be the pawn.”

“Wait…” Rin thought for a moment. “Aren’t there something like nine pawns? Nine Nico-chans?”

“There are eight pawns.” Umi stated.

Maki’s shoulders slumped. “The universe can barely handle one…”

“Nico-nii is pretty amazing.” Nico agreed, though probably not in the way Maki intended. “Nico can see how nine would be overwhelming.”

“Eight.” Umi corrected again.

“Whatever.” Nico dismissed. “Still, there can really only be one true Nico-nii.”

“Idiot…” Maki muttered.

“You like it.” Nico laughed.

“… Maybe…”

“Well,” Eli clapped her hands together “now that that is all decided, let’s work on the next set.”

Seven other girls agreed enthusiastically while one was still thinking about multiple pawns and being captured from behind.

Author’s Notes Continued: 1, 2, 3. Three Anon Asks about the Wonderland set. (Ah! Ah! Ah!) I think my readers really wanted a scene about it, and I can only hope this at least comes close to their expectations. And if it isn’t, perhaps the scene I’d like to write about the photoshoot itself might better suit their fancy... whenever I get around to writing it.

Also, this amazing work by @myonmukyuu played a large part in deciding Maki’s actions to defend Nico. The fact that she has a sword in the card’s depiction and that she was released alongside Nico already had the gears grinding in my mind. Myon’s pic sealed the deal as it made me realize I wasn’t the only one thinking along those lines.

Next, for those readers not well versed in chess, the title of the chapter refers to a special move pawns can make to capture another pawn. It is referencing the fact that Nico captures Maki after moving past her. And yes, for those better versed in chess, I realize that Maki has basically accepted the role as knight at that point and the move cannot be used on that piece. Also, generally speaking, one does not capture friendly pieces.

I tried to keep the chess rules chat overly simplified because I do not see any of the girls being experts. And the point of the scene wansn’t intended to be an in-depth discussion of the game. However, I can see Umi and possibly Hanayo having played a game or two in their time and thus at least knowing the basics; enough to try to help placate a grumpy Nico.

Finally, my original draft had Eli or Nozomi offer to have Nico be part of the secondary focus pair (SSR), but I still have yet to decide how to deal with those in the HtHaN universe. As such, I may come back to this scene later if I eventually figure things out.
